What's in the Box Base, two handsets, handset base with AC adapter, two batteries, instruction manual, warranty card, telephone line cord, belt clip
1 Battery is worthless.
I purchased my phone about 9 months ago, and it will only hold about a 10 minute charge. Do not buy this product unless you want to go through the extremely painful process of sending it back to Panasonic.
2 Yep, the batteries are no good.
I was just looking online for where to buy replacement batteries and after reading the reviews here I think I'll start looking for a new phone. The batteries on all 3 of our handsets only hold about 30 minutes in call time. We were hoping there was a LION replacement... no luck. Please learn from all these reviews... you'll love the phone until your 1 year warranty runs out and so do all your batteries!
3 good for less than a year?!
I like how the phone functions, it was working lovely... I had this phone for half year and problems begun. It often lose signal when I'm not even that far from the base phone. The phone just dies on me time to time, I get cut off right in middle of my calls. I ended up connecting my old 900MHz phone to a phone splitter, so that I can at least use this panasonic phone as caller ID box... What is wrong with this picture?
4 Oh, those batteries!
Like many, I find the batteries the bane of this phone. For us, the phone works fine and works throughout our house comfortably (over 4000 sq. ft.). So that is not the problem. And it helped clear up interference problems with my 2.4g wireless computer network, so that is good, too.
But over the course of one year I have had to replace two batteries (we have four handsets). The problem is the charging circuit design - not the battery. The instructions tell you NOT to keep the handset in the base as this will reduce battery life. This is simply a design flaw (or if you are highly cynicle, a great way for Panasonic to sell more batteries which, by the way, are FAR more profitable than the phones themselves!). It is quite easy to design a product so that it could be set in the base without causing battery life issues. And what other place is more logical to keep the phone than in the base?! So, we continue to put the phones in their bases so that we always know where they are, knowing that, due to Panasonic's design of the charging circuit, this will shorten the battery life.
It's a simple fix, Panasonic. Wouldn't you rather have more loyal customers than a backdoor way to profit from your battery sales? Perhaps not.
5 Battery life
I am not very happy with the phone. Worked fine so far and just 6 months later having problems with battery. It stays in the base all the time. If I pick up the hand set, I can talk for 5 min before I hear the beep to recarge battery.
I have the same problem as M.Lewis, the handset seams to be losing connectivity with the bas station. I have to walk the phone back to the base station and put it back into the cradle for it to recognize it again.
6 One year later, very disapointed
Well, like everybody else, I am having problems with battery life and connectivity to the base station. I bought the system in September 2003 and for the first 8 or so months, everything was great. Then I started having the battery problems. The batteries won't hold a charge for more then 15-20 mins. I do a lot of conference calls and it is becoming a big hassle. I have to run to the other phone and switch before it dies.
Also, the handset seams to be losing connectivity with the bas station. I have to walk the phone back to the base station and put it back into the cradle for it to recognize it again.
Not sure what to do - do I get new batteries, that will result with the same problems or buy another phone? I just want a phone with great features that is reliable. Is that too much to ask for? Come on manufactures, make a product that lasts!
There was a lawsuit filed in NJ for theses phones. Here is the link with more info: http://www.sheller.com/Practice.asp?PracticeID=140
7 unhappy with this product
My review would sound almost exactly like James Han an unahappy user. We also bought the phone 14 months ago. At the time we paid$180 (base station & 1 extra handset) thinking that we would have this phone for years; givern the higher price. We were wrong & we were past the 1 year warranty. We recently tried to buy another handset to replace the phonethat is troubled and it will not work with the base station. I will seriously think about buying another Panasonic product. I thought their products were supposed to be of higher quality; we were wrong.
8 Like many others, I'm finding it is an unrealiable product.
My first one was exchanged within 30 days. The first one would record voicemail garbled. The problems I have now are with the replacement unit. The handsets of the replacement unit won't hold a charge anymore. This started to occur almost simultaneously on both handsets after about 6 to 8 months. I'm finding the range to be poor. As soon as I go outside my house and turn a corner away from the base unit, the call drops. The volume is also rather low...people I'm talking to wonder if I'm talking into the phone or not (I guess this is a mic and not volume problem?) and even at max volume, it's not really does not get as loud as one would expect. It look like the first unit I got was a sign of things to come, I just wished I had heed the warning!
9 short battery life - low volume
Wow. my experience mirrors other reviews i see here. after about 1 year of use, batteries in 2 of these phones have extremely short life - cant talk for more that 15-30 minutes. Note that there is a class action suit pending against panasonic for this series of phones. Also the volume on these phones is very low, you have to use the speakerphone to hear unless the room is extremely quiet. Very disappointing, especially after having a prior panasonic 900mhz answering machine that lasted at least 6 years.
10 Dead Battery Problem
James Han's review is right on and let me add my own experience. When I bought this phone set, the features, price, handsfree headset, weight and everything seemed ideal. I was very happy. But now, less than 6 months after buying them, both handset batteries are dead and refuse to charge. What use are these features if I can't use them? I wish I could recommend another brand, but the most I can say is AVOID THIS PHONE AT ALL COSTS.
11 Works for me
I've owned this system for about 8 months and I've never had any trouble with it. The sound quality and range are very good, though your situation may be different from mine (see any of the negative reviews for examples). The system doesn't interfere with wireless computer networks which is definitely a plus. The phone book function is very handy.
I have only two complaints: 1. There isn't a way to copy an phone book or address book entry to all the extensions at once. It's a real pain to have to copy a new entry to every entension individually. 2. Almost every call hangup gets recorded as a message, no matter how soon after the answering machine picks up. Every day I'll have 3 or 4 messages that are just dead air.
I don't usually get excited about telephones, but I really like this phone system.
viperx100: You can delete messages from the handset using star-4 and star-5, which are 'this message' and 'all messages'. It took me a while to find that, but it is in the manual somewhere.
12 Don't buy it! Even at clearance prices
Severe problems. I have owned it for only 6 months and now cannot use the system because of constant background static that makes conversation almost impossible. Panasonic should issue a general recall for this junk of a system.
13 Not worth the money
OK I have had this phone since Feb 2004, replacing a Seimens gigaset (a big Piece of garbage). I needed the ability to use multiple cordless sets that wouldn't interfere with my wireless LAN. After reading many positive reviews on it, we bought it. For the first few months the only problem I had was poor range. It does not work out side my home. Period. Indoors was ok, untill recently. Now I can not hear what people are trying to say, as the static on all 3 phones is interfering with my ability to carry a conversation. I have emailed panasonic customer service and hope to hear good news but am doubtfull. I would not recomend this phone.
14 Not happy with this phone
I have used this phone for 8 months and will be replacing it soon. The reception on the 5.8 Ghz frequency is no better than the 900 MHz phone also used in the house. But, the worst part is that callers have trouble hearing me speak on the handset. Seems I am too quiet to be heard easily. This has been the case for half the callers on this phone. I will be going back to a land line and not use a wireless connection.
15 What happened to Panasonic quality?!
Usually a device must really perform poorly for me to write a negative review. This phone really is the worst purchase that we have made in a LONG time. We had a 900mhz Panasonic that lasted us for years and we decided to step up and get a new one. Figured that if Panasonic's reliability for our old phone was so great for sure it would be so with this unit. Man was I wrong. 1 year after purchasing the phone with an additional handset both batteries decided to sign off. It was amazing how this happened since they both died within days of each other. Went to the electronics store and bought two new batteries that are made by GE and charged up the units for the required time. Battery life is what it used to be but now we have another issue. "Cannot locate base" seems to be the issue now with either handset. It seems as though if I walk away any farther than across the house I lose the call that I am on. We are talking about walking from the Study to the kitchen in a 1 story house here so this is no long distance. Needless to say buying this phone system was not the best idea that we have made. I am so confused about Panasonic quality now. Do they make top shelf products or not? I guess I have to check and see if I am buying a Panasonic product that is made in Japan still to be sure since this one was made in Malaysia. I am sincerely disappointed with this phone and feel like I have been wronged.
16 The Phone's handsets won't last long!
I bought one about one year ago and everything works great until last month. I found one handset's battery dead and it can't be recharged anymore. Today rechargeable battery for both phone handset are dead! and I can only use speaker phone on the base station :-(
This is totally ruined my impression for Panasonic cordless phone! I bought a 900 MHZ Panasonic phone more than 7 years ago and it sitll works great right now! The difference I noticed is that that phone model was made in Japan ( of course more expensive in price then), while this 5.8 GHZ cordless phone is made in Malaysia. I guess Panasonic won't make any cordless phone anymore in Japan anymore. If anyone knows a model, pls let me know. Thanks!
So should I keep buying new handsets every year since I don't have time to deal with the hassle of fixing the phone with Panasonic tech support? Or should I just buy rechargeable battery ( P-P511 ) for the handset? But who knows? Maybe the handset is bad or the rechargeable base is bad.
Anyone has similiar experience to share?
17 Buggy; answering machine fails often
After the warranty period expired I noticed that the device starts "losing" memory -- where you may have started with 15 minutes available for messages it would go down to four minutes, 3 minutes, and now, my machine thinks it is full all the time. I erase all the mailboxes, clear the greeting, all to no avail. I called Panasonic and they give you a reset procedure that simply does not work (hold down mute, hold, and transfer buttons while plugging in then press #3). It has been a horrible experience.
18 8 Phones - 2 Dead LCDS, 8 dead batteries
We purchased the base station and 8 total phones. Sound quality is great, but after a few months the batteries started going bad. At this point we have replaced all of the batteries at least once - and the new ones are starting to go bad.
Turns out they made a poor engineering decision to use Nicad batteries which are an outdated technology. The batteries basically stop taking a charge after a few months of use and have to be replaced.
We also had the LCD go out on 2 of the phones.
I expect all the positive reviews here are immediately after purchase. Wait a few months and your batteries will die.
Also, Panasonic's customer support is not helpful. I have asked them multiple times to just send us new batteries under warrantee. They will not do this - they claim they aren't aware that this is a common problem and they refer you to a service center and it's at your expense to ship them the phones when all you need is a replacement battery.
19 Worst Reliability Ever!
I have never written a review that spoke poorly of a product before, but this phone system is more than deserving of a bad review.
I purchased a complete system of these phones, consisting of the base unit, and 7 extra accessory handsets. So, I have a total of 8 of these handsets. Since I bought them about 10 months ago, I have returned 9 phones for exchange. Do that math. This means that I have had to return every one of the original phones I received and then one of the "refurbished" units they sent to me as well. And I'm apparently about to return another now too since the battery won't hold a charge. On many of them, the LCD screens stopped displaying anything, or became so faint you couldn't read them. Adjusting the contrast setting did nothing. On other units, the battery would not hold a charge...they simply would not charge more than enough for about 2 minutes of talking.
The quality of these phones is absolutely the worst in any electronic product I have ever purchased. I expected much, MUCH!more from the flagship phone in Panasonic's product line.
This phone is a good concept, with good features, and good sound quality. But don't let that fool you. Chances are, you will be returning these lemons for an exchange before much time passes. I've spent over $50.00 in postage just mailing these things back to Panasonic for replacement, and then the replacements are just as defective. I am really disappointed because the features of this entire system fit my needs perfectly. But apparently, according to Panasonic, I can't have my cake and eat it too.
By the way, I am not one of those newbie owners that doesn't read directions. I fully charged every one of these units for 24 hours before even programming them. On two of them, the LCD displays went dead just in the first 24 hours of charging!
Completely unacceptable product. Look elsewhere for a 5.8Ghz phone system! I can not believe they are still being sold. They should absolutely be pulled from the market and recalled by Panasonic.
20 Please read before wasting money
After battling with my wife and persuading her to buy this phone (she had bad experiences with Panasonic in the past), we finally agreed to buy it.....WHAT A MISTAKE! We have 2 problems that make the phone unusable.
Firstly, with incoming calls it often rings once and then cuts out. Secondly (and it seems most people are having this problem) the batteries seem dead and calls cut out after about 1 min from both my handsets.....we had a Sony cordless for 9 years prior to that and the battery life was still fine. Needless to say I am busy contacting Panasonic (will not ask for new phone as I need a phone that works) in between eating my humble pie.....DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!
21 Poor warranty service -- avoid Panasonic
After 3 returns, I finally gave up on them. I got stuck with a lemon model, and they knew it was a lemon model, yet they would not upgrade me to comparable model. In a span of 9 months, Panasonic Warranty Service sent me 3 "factory refurbished" replacement cordless phones that could not hold a charge; total talk time would be less than 10 minutes. I don't have the time to deal with them anymore -- they win. Buyer beware.
22 Big Fraud on the Public
This phone is probably the biggest fraud Panasonic has ever dropped on the public. It uses NICD batteries which should have been a red flag, but thank God I purchased the extended warranty from Best Buy. After trying to live with it for about a year, I have exchanged it for an AT&T 5.8, of course made by VTECH, but I have not problem with that.
In my opinion,Panasonic rushed to the market with 5.8, and really turned out a crappy product. I noticed that the newer mocels now use NImH - perhaps ok, but why didn't they use NImH to start with?
23 great features, not good sound quality
Being a big fan of panasonic phones I got this to replace my aging 2.4ghz panasonic coldless. The features are great, handset speaker phone, extra handset, ability to check messages from handsets, but for some reason, I'm getting bad sound quality, kind of a crackeling sound when i turn on the phone, my wife says that all calls sound like you're on a bad cell phone call because it breaks up. Well back it goes to amazon, I think I will try the 2.4ghz with 2 handsets. It should be known that I do use Vonage voIP, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but old panasonic 2.4 ghz worked fine on it.
update - I picked up the newer 5.8ghz KX-TG5240M (try google search) plus extra handset KX-TGA520M and it works great, crystal clear on vonage, has a NiMH battery and talking caller id. Not sure if I got a bad KX-TG5110M unit, but the KX-TG5240M is a better phone anyway.
24 Good design, but not completely thought out
This is a flexible, easy to use phone system which has a number of valuable features, is an excellent design, but has some flaws in its execution you've got to live with.
There are plenty of bonus features, that other reveiwers have detailed, so I'm just going to touch on a few key points that you should consider when deciding to buy.
A KEY point in its favor: It is a TRUE 5.8 Ghz system. That is transmissions between handset and base unit are 5.8 Ghz BOTH ways. Most (if not all) other systems anywhere near this price range are 5.8 Ghz one way and 2.4 Ghz the other--but they're still marketed as "5.8 Ghz". Caveat Emptor. This is significant if your handsets are going to be near any wireless network you might set up. 2.4 Ghz Will interefere. Sometimes it's the computer that gets messed sometimes, it's the phone itself (AT&T for example, advises not to put their "5.8" Ghz phones near any wireless device, the phone experiences interference). So, if you've got a wireless network and you want to use a wireless handset near one of the componenets, for now this system is your only choice.
It's easy to set up, and relatively intuitive, although to take full advantage of its capabilities you need to play with it. Some things take a bit of getting used to. For example, the answering system will always play unheard messages first, not all messages in the order received. So, if there's a message you want to rehear that you've already listened to but you've got 5 new messages, you Have to listen to them first before you can get to the older ones. On the other hand, once you get used to it, it's actually kind of nice to always have messages you haven't heard come up first. There are a number of design calls the engineers made that are like that (for one thing, the robot talks too much--once you've learned their system it still treats you like a novice).
You can add up to six more auxiliary handsets.
3 mailboxes accessible remotely or from any handset is also nice in theory, but most folks may not use it.
I am quite pleased with my system, but there are a few downers you need to know when considering this unit.
1. Its range is not that good, about 2/3 of the range of the 2.4 Ghz GE system I replaced. Still more than adequate for homes, but I can't take my handset to the neighobr 2-3 houses down and use the system as I could with the 2.4 Ghz I replaced. Unfortunately, this is one of the laws of physics in radio. The higher the frequency, the less the range for a given power output. True 5.8 Ghz phone systems will not have the range of a 2.4 Ghz system. In fact, a Good 900 Mhz will outrange them both.
2. For whatever reason, Panasonic chose Nicad batteries for this system. Maybe to hit a price point, but this is a Serious limitation. Nicads don't retain their charge all that long or have a great shelf life. They also have "a memory". In other words, if you recharge the handset when its 1/4 depleted, pretty soon that length of time (1/4 of its capacity)will be all the battery will last before it needs to be recharged again. In fact, Panasonic's instructions say once charged, to leave the handsets Off their charger/stands (or I guess unplug the charger/stands) unitl the handsets show they are nearly depleted ("charge for six hours" shows in the screen). This is the biggest limitation of this system. However, there is an easy fix. A number of manufacturers make NiMH replacements for Panasonic Nicads, e.g., the Eveready ER-P111. RUN and get NiMH batteries for this system, it totally transfroms it. But allow that you're going to have to spend $15-20/handset to do this. I did, and it was worth it. Panasonic says that their next 5.8 Ghz system will have NiMH, but not sure when it's coming out. Since I bought this sytem, a slightly different looking model with a different model number has come out, but it also uses Nicads. I expect this is just a cosmetic change--the real "next model" may not be out yet. So, plan to buy those NimH batteries.
3. The caller cannot leave a message of any length as can be done with most phones. You must select 1,2 or 3 minute maximum recording lengths for messages. Now the system only has a total of 15 minutes recording time shared between all three mailboxes. This includes the outgoing message. If you set it to 3 mintue incoming messages and you have verbose callers, you could find out that you can only hold four messages unless you purge often. My advice is to set the incoming message length to one minute, but Be Sure To Tell Callers This In Your Greeting because most people today are expecting an answer machine to allow infinite length messages.
So, a mixed bag. Good quality, but a couple of dubious design decisions. If you've got a wireless network, this is really your only choice (for now). If you get NiMH batteries and adapt to the way it works, it's a really good system, worth the money. I'm happy with it, but also know it could have been a really great system.
25 Pathetic range
I purchased one of these units based on the performance of the 2.4 unit and the other reviewers. I am sad to say this unit performed misably. Oh, don't get me wrong all the bells and whilstes in the extensive feature set worked great, when standing next to the base. But the distance you could move away from the base before being out of range was pathetic. I consider this to be MOST INPORTANT after all that is why I bought a CORDLESS PHONE. OK, to be fair and accurate I should say that I received the out of range signal when walking to another room. If that room had one of its four walls made out of concrete or brick then I received the frustrating out of range message on the handset. The frustrating thing was that the solid wall did not have to be between the base and the handset! I tested this phenomenon in various rooms with similar results. I even tested another unit. They just do not work over any distance once you place a concrete or brick wall anywhere near the signal path.
Now some may say I was expecting too much so I tried a control experiment. Got a $19.95 900 MHz phone from R*dio Shack and talked the same path through my house. Perfect signal even around the concrete walls! Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
So now what have I learned - the 5.8 unit is not ready for Primetime! If you want an expensive short range phone and live in a small house/apartment without interior load bearing walls (concrete/brick) then this may due. Note this is an expensive solution. Also DO NOT believe the sale staff in the large retail chains that say they can talk from one end of their store to the other. That may be and we should all be so luck as to have a 40,000 square foot living room.
26 No Parts
This unit does not ship with the necessary parts. Even worse, the missing parts can be ordered only from Panasonic (Radio Shack will not know what you are talking about) for $30+ including shipping and handling. In early May, 2004 they are BACK ORDERED for over a month!
The problem is that the base unit only has two ports for telephone cords. If you have two two-line telephone jacks in the wall, you are ok. If you have four wall jacks you will need two KX-J24 T-Adaptors plus two 2 wire telephone line cords. The T adaptors are available only from Panasonic. On May 3,2004 these were back ordered until June 6, 2004.
This phone looks nice sitting on my desk, but until the parts arrive, it is only a two line phone.
This is unacceptable -- a $500 piece of equipment that requires unusual adaptors that are not readily available.
27 Phone System
This phone system is great! We love it. Lightning shipping!
28 Is it a lemon or Not any good - time will tell
We purchased this phone 31 Dec 03. We have had problems with the life of the handsets meaning, we charge it, the next day we can be on the handset with it showing (3 life batteries) then at the drop of a hat, its at one, and then I'm disconnected. Bought new batteries, for both handsets with no difference. Panasonic not much help. I took mine back to where I bought it, and we decided maybe we just got a lemon, so are trying a brand new one. If its not better, the store has agreed to refund us the money.
29 Eats Batteries Like No Tomorrow
Generally I like Panasonic products and if I'd have rated this product when I first bought it, I'd have given it 5 stars. Six months of living with it has dimmed my like for it a lot. I've had to replace every battery in it (I've got the original 2 handsets and 2 more) once and the second set of batteries are weakening. I get a maximum 1.5 hours talk time now. Batteries are very expensive and not carried by my local retailers (Fry's, Circuit City, etc.) except for batteries plus ($18 each). Anyway after about 3 months batteries really start getting weak and deep discharging with long recharges does nothing, within about 4 months, you're down to 5-6 minutes of talk time. I don't have this problem with my other NIcad powered electronics, including my 2.4 Ghz Panasonic phone, so I can only conclude that Panasonic under engineered the power requirements for this phone. Avoid this turkey.
30 Best Phone I've Ever Had
The Panasonic KX-TG5110M is simply the best phone we have ever had. Set-up was easy and the phone has crystal clear reception. The handhelds are the right size and comfortable and the functions of the phone are easy to use. I really like being able to store phone number in each of the handhelds and easily copy the phone books to the other handhelds.
Perfect phone system! You will love it.
31 Perfect in Every Aspect
It's hard to believe anyone would find fault with this phone.
It's plug and play. You plug a phone line into the base unit and then extensions just go into a wall socket. You plug in your extensions. Once you charge it for 4-5 hours, all you have to do is 'assign' a 2-6 number to the extension and THAT'S IT! (In the set here, you don't even have to do that! It's mart enough to realize the 2nd phone is phone #2). Everything just works.
The screen is bright and clear and the OS is pretty strightforward, you don't even to really read the instructions, the arrows toggle you up & down to subchoices like last 20 calls, phone book, etc ... You can access the voicemail from ANY phone, speakerphone easy as pie to activate and you can transfer calls, AND page the other extension (and use it as a walktie-talkie). Brilliant!
Again, hard to believe ANYONE would find fault with this phone. It's not the lightest phone but it's solidly built and the sound is great ...
For the WiFi/wireless geeks, you have to get a 5.8 Ghz phone so it doesn't interfere with your wireless setup - and both networks work perfectly. So, I'm not sure if they live under a power line but for everyone else, reception is fantastic!
This is exactly what electronics are supposed to be. YOu plug it in. It works for YEARS on end with no problems and no having to dig through a manual to figure out what's what.
I researched through all the available phones and this is the best of the 5.8Ghz via specs and now in using it, it's perfect!
32 Not worth the money
I bought this to replace my 3-4 year old Panasonic 2.4 GHz which worked great all around. This one has some features that I like, but the Caller ID works only about 1/2 the time, even the base doesnt get it, and I get static from about 25 feet away.
I thought the new frequency would be better, however it is actually worse in terms of noise, and range.
If I could buy my old setup again, I would in a skinny minute, but alas, it is not availiable
33 Excellent phone system
I have had this phone system for 2wks now. We have a phone on each level of our 3 level home. With the base unit on the second level, there is more than enough signal to have awesome fidelity without using the signal boost feature.
I would strongly recommend this phone system.
34 Audiophile's phone?
After our old 900Mhz phone died, we went through a number of phones, both 900Mhz and 2.4Ghz, with all sounding just terrible. With so many bad sounding phones, I was looking for one that an audiophile would love -- other features are much less important. After reading the reviews of this model we gave it a go, and it hasn't disappointed.
I'm not an audiophile, but the sound quality was really my number one concern. I just hate a lot of interference and the tinny sound that many (most) cordless phones have. This one sounds as good as a good corded phone. It is absolutely clear and clean. Even the speaker phone on the handsets has great sound.
Others mention the handset is too big and hefty, but I like it. It feels like it is a quality piece, not cheap and plasticy. I think this is a subjective item -- you may want to get your hands on one to judge for yourself.
The system has a great feature set that works nicely for our family, with the 3 mailboxes and so forth. It's great to have the two handsets, with options for more. I think this will be a phone system that can grow with us and be useful for many years.
35 Best on the market
This is the best product of this type (multihandset) on the market. It does have few cons.: battery life is not more than 3-4 days, with moderate use of phone. Also phone book could be bigger (it stores only 50 phone numbers).
Other than that I love the phone(s), sound is exceptional, ring choices are good.
I would definitely recommend this unit.
36 Worried by Reviews, Buying the Phone Anyway
I've always had good luck with Panasonic cordless phones, until I bought a 900Mhz KX-TC1891B. Now this phone is dropping out 4-5 seconds at a time, failing to ring when called, and otherwise acting erratic. I'll buy a KX-TG5110M, but Panasonic better get it right this time.
A few reservations about this phone going in:
1) Lack of a 2-line 5.8 GHz model. Almost a deal killer for me. I have not bought a single line phone in many years. If it were not for 802.11b/g network issues, I would simply wait for a better phone than this model to come along.
2) I have a $20 corded no-name phone that syncs clock & date with the phone company anytime the phone rings. $$$ Panasonic phones don't do this. Add feature bloat, complexity, and everytime there is a hiccup on the AC power line, you have to dig out the manual for directions to reprogram the clock. After a while, it is simply too much hassle and I blow it off, resulting in bad info logged with Caller ID missed calls, etc. If the date and time can't be captured off the telco, then at least the base station should have a 9V battery backup like a cheap alarm clock. It seems dumb to buy a big clunky UPS power supply for a single line phone, but I am almost pushed to the point of doing it.
3) Battery life in my KX-TC1891B stinks. Forget to charge the handset every night, and it will not make it through the next day. I hope the KX-TG5110M is better. I wish the base station would keep a spare battery pack charged and available. That's human-engineering reality.
On a positive note, I am excited about the speaker phone feature on handsets of this phone, and good reviews of this feature on the Amazon website. After the first tech support call waiting on hold for 20 minutes, I doubt I will ever be able to live without this capability on any future phone.
37 A lot better than the Siemens phones
My friend has 8 Siemens cordless phones at home and another friend of mine had Siemens cordless phones in his factory, he's since switched to Panasonic and had no more problems. I get a lot less noise/interferance on my Panasonics, and my range is a lot farther than my friend's Siemens. I've got two of these phones and the LCD screen on one died just a couple weeks after I got it, that's sub-par quality from what I'd expect from Panasonic, so I give them 4 stars instead of 5 that I would have. I also didn't see an easy way to auto-redial on a busy signal which is very frustrating, I'll take a look in the manual, but, with something like this you really shouldn't NEED to look at the manual, if you do, it's not ergonomically designed.
38 The best I have found, bar none!
I admit I was worried about spending over $200 for a phone/answering machine, but the phone works great.
(A) Range is outstanding (well over 100 yards)
(B) Clear as a bell
(C) Easy to set-up.
I do wish I could eavesdrop on a call from a remote as it was being recorded, but that is my only complaint after 3 months of use.
While the volume at the headset is not loud, turning on the speaker-phone function removes any problem with poor hearing.
Overall. I could not be more pleased with this purchase, and have highly recommended this phone to friends and family.
39 Good phone system
This phone does all that it advertises: good range, clear sound, simple ergonomics, intuitive operations. In addition, it does not interfere with 802.11b wireless home networks, a definate plus.
Only gripe is the volume; it starts off low with a tinny sound for just a second (first word spoken), then goes to good normal volume...very strange....
Overall, the gripe is minor; buy the phone, it does everything well.
40 This is the best phone I have ever owned
I have had this phone for a couple of months now and I continue to be impressed with the range and the quality of the phone. I can walk all over my 3 acres and not lose the signal. I can also take the handset out into my shop (about 20 feet away from the house) and not lose signal. This phone is feature rich and user friendly as well. I can't find anything to complain about.
41 Great Phone with Great Features for the Regular Consumer
I did alot of reading and shopping around before buying this phone for our home use. After buying it and using it for the last 6 months I can honestly say that its a great phone. The second phone does not have to be plugged into a phone jack--just a power source making placement of it very convenient. Even with the base unit in a downstairs room and the second phone upstairs there are no reception problems. I also love the intercom feature and the unique ringtones.
There are multiple mailboxes that can be set up and are easy to access from either of the phones. I also like being able to transfer calls between headsets--this is great if you have family members who are often in different rooms.
The phone works well, is static free, and is easy to use. I highly reccommend it.
42 Great Phone Great Price
I highly recomend this phone. Great quality at a low price.
43 Do Not Buy
This phone died after just two months. Sent it back to Panasonic, and was told that I would be sent a refurbished/rebuilt unit, not a new one (wrong answer!).
Other than the dying, and poor customer service, the phone is great - excellent features and great reception. Maybe I just got a lemon.
44 Still 5 stars
My original review is below. I have now had this phone system and 4 extension handsets for over a year. I have had no battery problems, no sound quality problems, no range problems, no answering machine problems and very minor volume issues with this phone. I *do* have a 2.4GHz Wireless LAN in my house and have had zero issues with that. After I read all the negative press on this phone (after I bought it) I was sure I'd be disappointed, but I'm not. I have noticed that this model is no longer available, so if any of my handsets go, I'll have to replace with another whole system. That's not good. But honestly, I don't think I could be much happier with what I have.
***original review***
I just upgraded to one of these systems and it is just about perfect for putting an "instant network" of phones in any home or even a small office running on a single phone line. Speakerphone feature works well (every handset AND the base station have speakers), broadcast range is excellent (100 ft through walls with no problem), the ONLY minor complaint is that sometimes the volume on the earpiece is too low. The phone even has a "signal booster" feature that helps if you're having problems on a call. The intercom feature is excellent. And the ability to listen to voice mail from any extension is great.
45 Not so fast Sportsfans
Well, I read a lot of the reviews for this phone, and decided to check it out for myself, as my current 2.4 ghz model is driving folks I call nuts because of low volume and random buzzing. So . . . I knew there were some comments on receiver volume being a little low, but I'd give it a chance. Well, it's on its way back to Amazon.
Major gripes:
1. Outgoing volume via my Plantronics headset (verified to work fine with other cordless phones) was noticeably low for the callee. This is big time unsat. I want the folks I call to focus on what I'm saying, not wondering why I don't have a decent phone - afterall, they know I'm a techie-buff!
2. Receiving volume in my headset was on the low side as indicated by other reviewers - not something I want to put up with on a day to day basis.
Minor gripes:
3. Handsets are on the larger side - particularly troubling because even given their larger size, they don't perform well!
4. No message waiting indicator light - Hello, Panasonic, what are you thinking? ? ?
5. Ni-cad batteries? Again, what's going on at Panasonic? Give me at least NiMH or preferably Lithium.
6. Can not shut off handset ringer (I did not verify this, but I believe I read it in a reviewers report).
Conclusion:
In the "final analysis" it boils down to poor sound volume, both sending and receiving. And this unit did not measure up, at least not with the fine Plantronics over the head headset I use.
Seems like these companies could throw a few more milliamps at the problem for mere pennies and this would fix this unsatisfactory performance. Just my opinion.
BTW, I went back to my "brick" Spread Spectrum Uniden cordless, which everyone says sounds fantastic (I believe it is 900 mhz). Why aren't we progressing ? ? ?

47 Great Phone but........Pricey
This is the best phone that I have come across in a while. It has all the features that you expect from an expensive phone. I sure hope it will last forever. I had a Uniden for which I've always owned Unidens. I will have to see if this phone will live up to its reputation. I like all the features that its capable of. I especially like the ring tones, they ring like office phones ring, very upscale, I feel like I'm in my office. I know it's a bit pricey but give it a shot, their aren't many 5.8's out there. Oh and go the extra and buy the one w/ the extra handset included it is worth the money difference.
48 Great Phone...But Pricey
The Panasonic 5.8 model shown above has great options and capability. It's usuer friendly and has the most features than any phone out there. The clarity is great and I love the ringer tones, they sound like the ones in the office. Although its pricey and has the extra handset, there are other options out there for 5.8 phones.
49 Generally Good Phone with Some Issues
I chose Panasonic because it was the only 5.8GHz cordless phone that wouldn't interfere with my 802.11 wireless network connection. As other reviewers have stated, phones by AT&T, Vtech, etc. are not true 5.8GHz phones (they receive in 5.8 but transmit in 2.4) as specified in their owner's manuals.
Overall I like the phone because of its abundant features, however there are several issues that should be addressed:
- The horizontal layout of the phone/answering machine base is not very user-friendly for mounting on a wall (i.e. in the kitchen). The base juts out far enough waiting for someone to walk into it. It also needs to be mounted low enough for children to view the LCD screen and access the buttons.
- I have a large head, but when I align the handset speaker to my ear, the microphone is far enough from my mouth that callers have difficulty hearing me. I have to put my ear on top of the LCD screen to get correct mic placement, but then I have difficulty hearing calls. Perhaps it would help if Panasonic slightly angled the handset like a clam-shell mobile phone.
- Handset volume could be louder. This phone's highest volume setting is equivalent to medium (or even low) on other phones. Other reviewers have not had problems with this -- maybe parts quality isn't consistant during Panasonic's manufacturing process.
- Slight hiss/static can be heard, even across the room with the signal booster turned on. Although signal boosting also drains the battery significantly faster, it would be a nice feature if it could be left on indefinitely rather than manually each time.
- Although one can play answering machine messages remotely through the handset, live messages can only be heard at the phone base. Remote call screening would be another great feature next time around.
50 Worked great for two weeks then died
I got the two handset model KX-TG5110m. It worked great for two weeks. Then came the fatal "System Error #9" all the lights on the base flash like a Christmas tree. I called Panasonic customer service the hold time was 12 minutes. The guy told me the phone was done for. He said it could have been a power serge, I do have the phone plugged into a good serge protector. Oh well, I can't seem to find a phone with better features, so I will exchange it for new one and give it another try.
51 Best Phone Out There
I was looking for phone that had excellent speakerphone capabilities, what I got was the bonus package. This phone has, expandability, I've already ordered a second handset, and will replace all of our phones in the house with them in the near future. The intercom feature my wife and I have used it continuously over the last few days. As far as speakerphones, it works great,(ease of use, muting, and privacy) and the handset itself also has speakerphone capabilities. We called all of our relatives to wish them happy new year, me using the speaker phone at the base, and my wife elsewhere in the house using the speaker phone on the handset, if you are looking for a phone, this is what you should buy!!! Excellent phonebook, caller id, conference call, answering machine, etc.. capabilities. I'd give 10 stars if possible.
52 LCD out on 2 out of 3 Handsets
I usually do not write reviews, but considering what this system cost and my results I thought I would share them. Right out of the box the phone is easy to settup and easy to use. No problems with battery life and the reception was great. The phone has way more bells and whistles than I would ever use. I have only had the phones for 6 months. The LCD is shot on 2 out of my 3 handsets. When I say shot I mean blank.......no caller id, no phonebook no nothing on the display. I emailed Panasonic and got a response in a week. The told me to reset the phone by holding down 2,5,8,0 all at the same time plus numerous other steps. I did this, with no results. I emailed the folks at panasonic back and 45 days later still no response. MMMMM not exactly the customer service I would expect. I purchased the phones at a large wharehouse type retailer so I am working with them on an exchange. I have noticed by glancing through some of the reviews that the LCD display seems to be a repetative problem with these phones. At almost 300 bucks for the set......(including an extra handset) you would think the LCD would be more stable. Hope this helps.
53 Panasonic phone is of good quality with few problems
Reception is fair, marginally better than the 900 MHz model we had two years ago. The volume is acceptable in a quiet house, but with small children or background music the earset volume is inadequate. The display is good as are all the ring options. The monitor function is excellent for babies and for eavesdropping on older anklebiters. The intercom feature is excellent as well. The major drawback is the limited earpiece volume.
54 one important feature missing
You can only monitor incoming calls from the base. Which is a real inconvenience if the base is upstairs and you're downstairs.
Good sound, lots of other great features, but if you screen calls, this is not the phone for you.
55 LCD dies
Enjoyed the phone, but the display on the handset is gone after 3 months, and I cannot correct it.. panasonic is no help, so I don't reccommend this phone.
56 Great phone, Here's some tips!
I wrote some tips based on problems noted in other reviews as well as some items that surprised me after I got the telephone home. We had a nice telephone before, but this one has several features that we had not seen before. Here are some items, followed by the page number in the manual for further reference. I noticed that the manual is available on the product page. If any of these items seems very important, then I suggest you check the manual for more details.
SETUP
=>Although you can connect 8 handsets total, only four can be used at once. (page 24)
=>The privacy button, when pressed, prevents others from joining the conversation on any of the extensions to this telephone. (page 45)
=>You can copy all the items in the phone book to another unit. (page 38-39)
MESSAGES
=>If someone calls and wants to leave a message after you have answered, you can transfer them to a mailbox. (page 57)
=>You can check messages from the handset. (page 54)
=>You can erase all messages or just one. (page 56)
=>The light only blinks for new messages, not for all new calls. If you received calls, it says "received calls" on the LCD screen. The blinking light issue for all new calls was the only thing that we hated about our last Panasonic phone. I couldn't find where it talked about this in the manual, but I tested it several times.
=>There's only one thing about the telephone that didn't make sense. There's a button right next to the blinking light that lets you know that you have a new message. That made me think that was the button to push to play back messages. Wrong! That button turns the answering machine on and off, that's all. To play back a message press the number of the mailbox, 1, 2 or 3. (page 53)
=>You can set the playback speed to slow playback... nice for writing down telephone numbers. (page 55)
=>Stored messages are not affected by power failures. Messages are saved until erased. We lost our power for five days due to weather. When the power came back on, our messages were still there. (page 22)
CALLER ID
=>It's very easy to erase all the items in the Caller ID list or just one. (page 33)
=>If you subscribe to Caller ID, the date and time are set automatically through the Caller ID information service after the first telephone ring. I unplugged the phone, this worked. The manual does warn that the time might be wrong after a power outage, but we have not had problems with that. (page 17)
MAILBOXES
=>We don't use the multiple mailboxes and had some concern about that. As it turns out, that doesn't matter, the calls automatically go into mailbox one and we just don't use the others. (page 50)
=>You can password mailboxes 2 and 3 to prevent anyone else from accessing the messages. (page 51)
GENERAL COMMENTS:
There are several other features that we don't use, like the monitor function. I tested it, though, and it seems to work ok. When you call the other phone to monitor, it doesn't ring, but the monitored handset does say "room monitor" on the LCD screen.
The handset is longer than my old handset. So if I hold the telephone with the mouthpiece lined up like I'm used to, then the sound is faint. But if I line up the earpiece with my ear, then I can hear fine. Until I did that, I thought the volume was too faint. It felt a little awkward until I got used to it.
The manual is straightforward, complete, and easy to follow. There is a good list of troubleshooting errors that refers you to a page. Great index. The one thing that I don't like is that some of the methods to complete functions are slightly different on the base than on the handset. I basically only use the handset, so that has not been a big deal.
I bought this telephone because I have a wireless headphone that uses the 2.4 ghz frequency. I wanted to be able to use the headset while others were talking on the telephone. For that, it works great. We owned another Panasonic telephone. This one is much easier to use. I like this telephone quite well and highly recommend it.
57 Lots of good features BUT
As most of the reviews on this phone system have said, lots of nice features, no dispute there.
BUT the LCD keeps going blank on both phones, no LCD no features.
Problem started within two months of purchase, was able to get the LCD back a few times but now one handset LCD is just gone.
Low volume unless you are using speakerphone feature, which is very good.
Range is very poor, cant get more than 75 feet from base and that is pushing it. In the begining could only get 25 feet but a reset of both base and handsets got it out to the 75 with booster.
Have to get handsets back for repair before warrenty runs out.
Not happy.
58 What a surprise!
We have lived in a remote area for over 20 years and have never been able to find a cordless phone that actually WORKED! Well, this one DOES!!!
We would have settled for a phone that just reached between the house and barn, but this Panasonic phone has so many other features that have made it a pleasant tool to keep in touch!
Thank you Panasonic!
59 Very disappointed
I bought this phone after reading all the reviews including someone who used it in their barn. I need a phone in my house and want the 2nd unit in my barn 150' from my house. According to the reviews and literature this should not be a problem...I can't even use it in my backyard! Phone is being returned.
60 Range seems bad
I'm really enjoying my Panasonic kx-tc1868b 900mhz/sst phone that has a phone to base range of two houses away. The first time I tested the range of the 5110m phone I couldn't get 1 house away before the signal dropped out. Panasonic said to reset the system to see what would happen. The second time, (after 12 hours of charging) I couldn't get out of my back yard before the signal started tweedling. Trying immediately after the third system reset, the 5110m started tweedeling when I stepped out my back door. If it required turning on the booster to go farther, I didn't want to deal with it. I took the phone back to the store. The phone looks really nice anyways. It isn't simple to operate though; being a tech I could figure it out, but my mother likes things as reasonably simple as possible and wouldn't like the phone as much.
Does anyone know of a new dual pad, expandable system that can do conferencing between each of the handsets and base phone that has the same or better range than my 1868b and is as durable as the kt-tg2583, but doesn't drop conversations or fizzle out after a year and has long battery life and is under $200 as much as possible?
Thanks.
61 Where's the other models?
Why did Panasonic only release this phone with an answering machine built in? Many people use voice mail features from their phone service providers. Panasonic released their 2.4 Ghz phones in models compatible with phone company voice mail but they have not done so with these 5.8 Ghz phones.
I like the phone but until it's released with a message waiting light (for off-site voice mail), I have returned mine. I do not understand their choice to introduce the product this way.
62 Great phone but can be improved
This is a great phone. I will only talk about something I desire in the future.
1. Each voice box can be recorded your own announcement to confirm you are in the right voice box.
2. Depending on a phone number (e.g. out of area, private or some certain phone numbers), the ring tone will change. (Very useful for phone screening)
3. Can set the phone so a private caller or/and out of area cannot leave voice message. (Very useful feasture)
4. The handset has time and date. Also it can keep a short call history with call duration, time, date.
5. An extra battery which can charge at the base unit. The extra battery can be replaced the handset battery easily. (Very useful feature)
6. Can use the speaker phone on the Handset while it is charging
7. The handset would be smaller.
8. The voice box buttons will light up depending on which voice box has a message.
9. The voice box has long record time (current, it has only 15 minutes).
10 A extra mic can be on the back of the phone. So the phone can lay down and one can use the speaker phone without covering the mic.
11. The handset can set louder.
12. Accessories for hearing problems people (for my parent)
There are many good things. You can just read other reviews. I won't repeat them here.
63 The best smallest, lightest, powerful house workhorse phone!
I have had this phone for quite some time and it's wall mounted and takes up so little space! It holds all my phone numbers (quite a lot!) and with the Caller ID, it's a blessing! Know when to avoid answering (that's why I have to remain anon)and I set special ring tones for friends with whom I do want to talk. I can't live without this phone!! It clips to your side and you can use the earpiece and walk around the house and work in the yard and the clarity doesn't change one bit! This is the best cordless phone I have ever owned. When I am in the kitchen I can set it on the counter and just hit speaker phone and talk and cook and the quality doesn't change for the caller either. If you haven't had a 2.4 giga-this is the phone to get as it'll be the only one for a LONG time! Can't say enough good things. This is a busy house here and it's been dropped a lot too but never gets sensitive. With all of its small delicate looking features, it seems like you might need to be careful, but not this guy. He's been great, pulling his weight around this household!
64 Excellent Phone
I purchased this phone about a month ago and have been very happy with it. The setup is very easy, having the extra handset is great when you don't have a phone jack handy and the battery lasts a long time. The instructions say that it lasts 11 days but with pretty regular use, mine holds a charge about a week at a time. I only have two complaints, its hard to hold the phone on your shoulder when you have your hands full (but there is a head set jack if you are so inclined) and the letters and numbers on the display on the hand sets are small. Otherwise I absolutely love it. Its the best phone that I've ever had. There is volume control, you can number each hand set, and you can set each handset with its own ring tone. There is so much more to this phone than is available with any others. Buy it!
65 Not a bad phone, but not perfect.
I recently returned my Uniden 448-2 to pick up this phone. Here are some of my reasons for the change:
The TG5110M is expandable up to eight handsets vs Uniden's two. This is a great feature for those with families or if you'd simply like more cordless phones around the house. I also enjoy the intercom feature that allows you to page any one of the eight optional handsets or the base unit individually. Want to talk to Sarah in the family room? Press intercom then the number of the family room handset. It's really user friendly and convenient. I also like the speaker phone on the handsets. Tired of holding the phone while talking to grandma for hours? Set the phone on the couch and talk from a distance. A really cool feature.
As a fair reviewer I also have a few gripes. For one, there's no speed dial. With the Uniden you can press one button to dial a number, and with the Panasonic you have to scroll through the phone book. There is also no distinctive ring option that some cordless phones have. I also have a problem with the design. This phone seems very bulky and heavy compared to most cordless phones on the market. It doesn't feel comfortable in your hand. I also think that the talk and off buttons should be backlit. Some have complained about battery life, but unless you plan on talking for over four hours straight it shouldn't be much of a concern. Hey, you have at least two of them, switch!
Bottom line, this isn't a perfect phone, in fact I don't think it's enough phone for the money, but it's not terrible either. It has some nice features and would make a great addition to any household.
66 Great Phone!!!!!!!!!!!
The only feature that would make this phone even better is the ability to direct a call to a specific headset. This phone has good sound, same distance from base as a 2.4ghz system, buttons are responsive, speakerphone as good as speaker phone can get, easy to transfer calls from handset to handset and from speaker to handset, has a keypad on base unit, comfortable to hold, battery life is as stated.
67 Impressive phone
When our 900 mHz Panasonic and Vtech phones died, it was time to upgrade. However, we have a 802.11b setup, so a 2.4 GHz phone was not a wise idea. After a week of use (while using the computers online) this phone is incredible. No interference and strong signal all over the house. The number of options is a little overwhelming (3 mailboxes! multiple ringers! signal booster!) but the phone is still easy to operate. Kudos to Panasonic for putting a speakerphone on every handset. Overall, another great phone from Panasonic.
68 Great!
We've had the Siemens Gigaset 8825 system for 3 years. The range was just ok, but the quality was terrible - we had to return a handset just about every 6 months.
So, we finally decided to switch it out ant go the Panasonic 5.8 system. It's been great so far. The features on it are fantastic - the speakerphone on each handset is just great. The range is about 30 feet better than the Siemens. We're really happy with it.
It's basically chock full of features that the Siemens didn't have, has better range, and is less expensive.
69 Interesting Trend!!!!!! Downgraded to < 3 STARS!!!
Take a close look at all of these reviews. Most of the old reviews are excellent and they gradually get worse as you get towards the newer reviews. This is a direct indication of this phone's reliability.
I've had the phone for about a year now. My first review was 5 stars. My current review is a GENEROUS 3 stars.
This phone is loaded with great features, the speakerphone is excellent, and the reception has been good in my 3 level house (it even works when I go to my mailbox which is over 30 feet away).
The main problem is the battery life. At about 10 months the battery life began deteriating rapidly and I had to replace both batteries. Very annoying.
I've also noticed some other reliability issues - like the ringer breaks up now when there's an incoming call. Also, the speaker phone doesn't seem to work as well as it used to. The speaker seems to break up a little.
If you don't mind changing the batteries every 8-12 months than this is a good phone for you. Personally I would recommend a newer model with a NiMH battery.
70 IT"S DA BOMB! TOTALLY THE BEST
FEATURES, FEATURES, FEATURES. You should give this a try. I have waited for a great phone and it's now here. I got a great price. Going to buy another handset. I Like using belt clip (which is very secure on phone)and speaker phone on the handset when I'm on hold. I just clip it to my shirt and continue my life. You can adjust volume on handset, on base, for ringer and volume for Monitoring answering machine. Which I forgot to turn on.
LOL
Love the NOT TO SHORT phone. I can put it on my shoulder again. Love the light up display. Love the easy menu's. Really love the one touch dial of last 5 calls. Love the Add to phone book.
SPEAKER PHONE IS CLEAR! But callers can still tell its a speaker phone. Haven't needed to use Booster yet. Manual is big help and clear. It's a very attractive phone. I've seen some reviews here that knock the volume. No real problem here. Use it by my computer all the time. No interference.
I wish it could set ring tones for specific callers. That would be very convienient. Especially if it could be set to ring differently for Out of Area or Anonymous calls. Darn telesellers.
I also wish it would learn to fix dinner. Still waiting for that feature too.

I bought and tried three different 5.8GHZ phones available on the market... Uniden, VTech, and the Panasonic. The following is what I found:
Uniden
The Uniden looks good, but only performs decently. The handset is a bit big and clunky, and fairly heavy too. The worse feature of the phone is the ear piece. It sounds very tinny and not really that impressive for a phone of this quality and price. It's like talking to someone with a tin can up to your ear... all treble and no bass... doesn't sound natural. Probably the worse sounding ear piece I've ever heard on a phone.
VTech
First of all, it doesn't truly utilize 5.8GHZ technology... it's 2.4 one way and 5.8 the other... so this still can cause problems with outside interference and computer networks. The phone performs fairly well, but there was nothing that special about it's performance or features. A 2.4GHZ phone for more than $50 less would perform the same.
Panasonic
WOW! BY FAR THE BEST PHONE ON THE MARKET. I honestly found no flaws with this phone. Great range (further than the other two), never experienced static once, great sound and clarity from the ear piece, really nice answering machine and caller id features, very clear displays,.. the lists goes on. Just an all around great phone. I'm glad I tested them all out to see what was the best bang for my buck... the Panasonic 5.8GHZ phone blows the other 5.8ghz phones out of the water... it's not even close. If I hadn't tried them all, I may have been satisified with the other 2, but having tried the Panasonic, I wouldn't even consider the Uniden or VTech phones... they are mediocre in comparison to the Pansonic... yet cost the same price.
Go with the Panasonic... I love it. Best phone I've ever owned.
72 Great Phone
First of I got this at http://www.jjielectronics.com/product.asp?0=242&1=243&3=161 for $229.00. This is a great phone. No static while sitting in front of my computer, excellent range and sound quality. The speaker phone is so good that people wont even know they are on speaker phone and speaker phone on the handset is perfect! My only gripe is that I wish the handset volume would go up one more notch, although the speaker phone volume goes quite high. Highly recommend!!!
73 also check kx-tg5100m for more reviews.
this is the same phone as the kx-tg5100m (the kx-tg5110m has a second handset in the box).
also read the reviews for that product.
74 Great Features - Bad (Low) Volume
I loved everything about this phone. Great base set with big buttons, easy menu set up, good speakerphones on both base and handset.
But I had to return it!
The volume on the handset, even though I had it cranked it up to the highest volume level (and the booster on), was *always* way too low and soft for me. I am not hard of hearing. It's a shame that such a great phone has one big flaw that, for me, makes it unusable.
CAN'T RECOMMEND IT.
P.S. The base (speakerphone) has five volume levels. They worked great. The handset (and its speakerphone) have only 3 volume levels. Maybe that's the problem- needs 2 more (higher) volume levels on the handset. It's also possible that it was just my phone that has this problem, but I haven't had good luck with Panasonic phones in the past, so I'm not going to try another one.
75 Lots of features, but a poor cordless telephone
This cordless phone 'system' is loaded with features, but, in my opinion, is a poor example of a cordless telephone. I have 2 older Panasonic 900Mhz cordless phones, a KX-TCS970 (6 years old) and a KX-TC1801 (3 years old). Both of these older models are better cordless telephones in terms of general reception quality and the distance you can travel from the base and maintain acceptable sound quality and contact. I called Panasonic, and all they suggested is changing the 'Line Mode' from 'B' to 'A' (whatever that means!) ... unfortunately, it made no discernable difference. Other concerns include bulky handsets, and the handset 'Booster' feature must be turned on each time you picked up the remote handset.
76 Pricing on items
I widsh you"d quit playing games with the price. I finally did not fin d out how much it costs.
77 good but minor faults
Have been using the phone since beginning June 2003, the overall quality of the product is good.
The display on the handsets is gone after a month, now I cannot figure how to correct it.. panasonic is no help in getting this corrected as of now.. waiting to be sent for servicing.. it is a hassle to dial or use the handset any display on the handset...
Deleting the messages using the handset is a mystery..
78 Couldn't ask for more
I've had the phone for three weeks now and I can't find a single thing to complain about. The sound is clear- no buzz, no static and I've moved the handset as far as 150 feet from the base station with no degradation in sound quality. Besides sound, there are two things I really love about this phone.
1. With just a few keystrokes you can copy a saved phone entry, or even an entire directory, from any unit to any other unit. That's a real time saver if you store 40 - 50 numbers in memory.
2. In today's world, when calling a business, it seems like it takes forever to get to a human being on the phone. Whenever I'm put on hold, I just press the speaker phone button on the handset and continue with whatever I'm working on at the time. The speaker phone volume on either the base or the handsets is more than loud enough for me to hear and respond when a human voice replaces the elevator music I'm usually forced to listen to. This feature saves both my time and my sanity.
The caller ID on this phone works as well as it does or did on any of my other phones so I think that Panasonic has definitely licked that problem. If you shop around, you can find this phone at pretty good discounts off list. I bet you won't be disappointed.
79 Look no further for a fairly priced expandable phone
Let me tell you why I bought this. Expandability, features, speakerphone, intercom, usable distance. In short, if you need any of these features...get this phone system. All of these work well in my house. I'm buying at least two more extensions today to make a total of four handsets.
I've owned many Uniden phones. I've bought and returned Sony and other Mfr. phones. I've researched and bought the the Siemens 4215 phone for my family. However, I have to say this is a better system. I'm a design engineer with a strong pension for quality products.
This phone can reach into our steel pole barn with no apparent loss of signal (200+ feet away) through brick, glass and steel. I stood on the other side of the microwave (from the base station) that used to render my 2.4 Ghz unusable...it had no effect on this phone. I have more trials planned. I bought this at 6th__ [local website][local website].
Cons: Weird optional ring tones, standard Panasonic long antenna. Reorganizes phone list alphabetically (might be changable) after entry. Handset is a bit slick (should change over time)
No time display on handset LCD, however, does record Caller number and time of call on each handset. LCD screen is okay but not as easy to read as my AT&T 6310 GSM cell phone (very good contrast and illumination)
Pro's: Numerous. 11 day standby. LCD tells you in text when phone is done charging. Battery cannot be overcharged. Very good sound quality..it lacks the digital reverb of my friend's older Panasonic phone. Hold and intercom functions. At least as good sounding or better than all our previous phones. Speaker phone sounds very good but haven't used it too much.
In short, find your best price and get it. At [money amount]you could spend 50% more and get a piece of garbage with a lot less features.
80 Excellent phone
Possibly the best 5.8 ghz phone on the market. Two-way 5.8 ghz communication is by far worth the price alone if you also have a 2.4 ghz wireless network running in your home. AT&T, Uniden, and VTech rushed their less capable 5.8 ghz phones to market while Panasonic seems to have figured out what it takes to make 5.8 ghz work.
Good batterly life (though it is a NiCad, possibly the only downside I've found in the phone). Good sound quality. Good range. Nice features. I'm very satisfied with this phone.
81 Awesome capability for a home phone system!
Why I like it...
1. 3 mailboxes.
2. Address book can be easily shared among all 3 phones (base and 2 handsets).
3. Excellent speakerphone capability.
4. Stylish - slightly larger handset size is very comfortable.
This replaced an 8 year old 900 mHz Panasonic because the number 7 stopped working after a Coke (tm) related spill... I am very pleased with the new design.
82 Very impressive phone save for a few minor gripes.
I waited for this phone to come out for what seemed like forever. I was tempted by other 5.8 Ghz phones, but none of them really measured up. Some were not true 5.8 (2.4 one way and 5.8 the other), the others could not use both handsets at the same time or share a phonebook (*cough* Uniden *cough*). I must tell you, when I got this phone, it was worth the wait.
Pros:
The buttons are very responsive.
True 5.8Ghz phone
Excellent sound quality
Shared phonebook between base and other handsets (you can transfer each number individually)
Almost lifelike speakerphone quality (best that I've heard so far)
Redial of the last 5 made calls
3 mail boxes
Phone conference between handsets and/or base
Call transfer between handsets and/or base
Backlit display and buttons
Privacy button, so other handsets cannot join (if you wish)
Mute button (where have you been all my life, no more covering the mic with a hand)
Cons:
Huge handset (when compared to earlier Panasonic models)
No clock on the handset display (AT&T and Uniden have this feature)
Can't figure out how to erase messages from handset (maybe its just me)
Bottom Line:
I love this phone. Definitely worth the wait. Best panasonic so far and by far the best 5.8 Ghz phone out there right now. (not the cheapest though)
