PV-D4744S DVD/VCR Combination Deck outputs a high-density progressive DVD video signal rather than the traditional interlaced signal. When connected to a digital television with 480p display capability or better, the result is a clearer DVD picture without bothersome, jagged-edge motion artifacts. The impressive memory capacity of a DVD disc means that a movie may be recorded in as many as eight different languages or contain subtitles for up to 32 languages. A DVD's capacity also gives a film's director the opportunity to include multiple camera angles for the same scenes or to include a series of different endings!Play DVDs, CD-R/RW2 discs and VHS tapes, as well as MP33 and JPEG3 files. 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR offers high fidelity stereo sound and outstanding picture quality in both SP and SLP modes. This device fits right in your home theater system.
Panasonic's silver, full-featured PV-D4744S integrates a high-quality, progressive-scan DVD player and four-head, hi-fi VCR. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the PV-D4744S stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion tape play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. The unit even lets you record a TV show while watching a DVD at the same time. By receiving the Extended Data Service signal from your local PBS channel (where available), the PV-D4744S sets its own clock and date. Furthermore, a 24-hour back-up system saves the settings and, in the event of a power outage, resets them automatically when the power is restored.
Front audio/video inputs make it easy to hook up your camcorder or gaming device. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured AV receiver. The player simulates surround sound from DVD programs for a spacious effect from any two speakers.
Other features include auto VCR head cleaning and tape-position display, DVD repeat play, DVD high-speed smooth-motion scanning (up to 100x normal speed), DVD picture zoom, and a trilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French). The unit is Energy Star compliant and comes with a universal remote control.
What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo, remote control, remote batteries, audio/video cables, and a user's manual.
1 I would rate ZERO stars if i could.
Opened the box, plugged it in, put in a tape, and enjoyed the feature.
Bought a brand new DVD (LotR) and put it in my all new and exciting DVD player and it would not play (straches or dirty).
This product is defective to say the least. I found that the lense carraige doesnt stop when attempting to read the table of contents on the DVD. therefore when moving toward the center of the disk, the lense hits and bounces off the DVD spinning motor (nice!). I put the machine back together deciding that i would deal with the problem and just eject/reinsert my DVDs 5 times before playing them, but!! It doesnt play anything at all now - or - no output at all! I found that there is a solar sensor that detects if the case has been opened (opened case with the light on). The sensor now stores that information and wont even turn the machine on if no light is present (the machine will auto-power off if the lights are turned off). Also, with no output, i can no longer use my Gamecube, PS2, or XBox with this product.
I understand that I have voided the warrantee by opening the case, but for the product to self-destruct (litterally) if the case is breached, in my opinion says that it was never really mine in the first place... WHY DID I SPEND $150 TO LEASE IT THEN?
Do NOT buy this product - opinion.
2 DISAPPOINTED BY PANASONIC
Bought at Xmas. To warranty repair of VHS ejection in January.
March: Tried one DVD and it worked. Tried a second and it told me it couldn't read it! It's supposd to read Region 1 discs (which this one is). Try to figure out what's wrong? Tried website, which refused to recognize my model number.
Called Customer Service. First time, I held on for an hour, and it cut me off, unanswered by humans. Second time, 45 minutes before I got a human. Then he tells me it reads Region 1 discs.
"Not mine" I say. He says "Read your manual" and hangs up.
My product stinks, but you may get one that works. If it doesn't,
forget about telephone help. Sorry I bought it. Very sorry.
3 Perhaps the Worst Product I've Ever Bought
I bought and used this DVD player for fewer than two months before I just couldn't take it anymore. I found it routinely rejects DVDs (tells me I have to clean them or they may be scratched) that other DVD players play just fine. I clean them and usually that fixes them, but not always, and keep in mind, this means they always have to be perfectly clean or they just won't play at all in this machine, where they will in others. The OTHER problem this player seems to have is a basic design defect -- it has some kind of buffer that fills up and at that point it quits playing your DVD after about an hour or so. Eject the disc and restart from the same place and it plays fine again even at the same place it quit, so it's not a problem with the disc. (Apparently a buffer [memory buffer?] becomes filled up during normal play of a 2-hour disc and the machine then just quits, and the only way to get it to play again is to eject it and restart the disc from that chapter.) It also seems to hang up A LOT on the transition from when you click a menu item to going to the place the menu is supposed to take you. Note that all contact to Panasonic about this has, to date, been ignored, even though it's on warranty. This has truly been a hassle for me and I cannot recommend this machine to anyone in good conscience. (The VHS worked fine but the image quality is rather poor even for VHS.) Clearly there are majorly substandard parts used in this machine, coupled with defects in its very design in regard to the DVD player. After reading several reviews online I found a DVD player that reviewers said again and again worked reliably with DVD discs -- the Panasonic DVD-S27. I was reluctant to buy another Panasonic, but the DVD-S27 is superb and inexpensive and reliable.

5 Panasonic PV-D4744S Progressive Scan DVD / VCR Combo (Silver
Thisa is a very poor product. I used it only a few times, but it broke after 4 months, i.e one month out of full warranty. When I returned it to Panasonic--still covered by the parts warranty, Panasonic wanted $95 to repare it--the same as I paid for it new. My letter of complaint was unanswered. I will never buy another Panasonic product.
6 Great DVD/VCR combo
This DVD/VCR combo was very easy to set-up and to use right out of the box. We bought this for our bedroom and we have used it for a few months now. It plays both DVDs and VHS tapes very well. The VCR records easily and clearly. I would definetly recommend this combo to any person looking for an inexpensive good quality DVD/VCR combo.
7 easy to use
So far i havent had any problems. The VCR works and the DVD plays DVD and CD's and MP3's just perfectly.I havent tryed a DVD-R yet but I doubt I will have a problem with it. The remote is pretty easy to use, compared to other combos i have used. And the clock sets automaticaly if you have the right set up, I dont but doing it manually was easy.
I didnt give it 5 stars because it wont let you play MP3's randomly or make a play list. It only lets you do random and play lists with normal CD's.
8 DVD side is junk
I set it up in my RV. The VHS works great, Easy to program, Poped in a DVD and it cant read them, tried several including CD's must be defective so I would rate the DVD side JUNK!
