1 Size does matter!!!!!
Just got this baby. The new design is incredible. It makes me wonder why they couldn't get it the first time? But who cares now?? It is amazing though that when you compare the two in size --- it feels like someone went to a plastic surgeon, and a good one too!
The lack of hard drive expansion ability does not matter to me. Don't play Final Fantasy XI, I'll wait for XII. The built in network adapter and a IR port for a remote control are very nice. The fact that the tray is not motorized any longer is also a plus in my book. It was way too fragile and it caused a lot of 'disk read error' messages, which can I say are fixed in this revision.
All in all, it still plays the same, feels the same but looks a WHOLE LOT SLEEKER! You want it! Go SONY!
2 PS2...
The PS2 has more than 200 great titles including: GTA, Ratchet games, jak games, and tekken. It has also has midnight club 3 and gta san andreas. The new design is internet and dvd ready. But its also the most fragile of the three systems. But the smallest.
Pros.
Huge library
good games
home of gta, jak, and ratchet and clank
network ready
dvd ready
good grafix

cons.
fragile
heats up if misused
more games are bad then good

Gameplay: 9/10
Durability: 5/10
grafix: 8/10
controller: an easy 10
games: 8/10
online: 7/10
overall: 8.6/10
The PS2 can work with all ps1 games. Ps1 memory cards can work on ps2, but only for ps1 games. ps2 memory can not work with ps1 games. ps1 controllers can work with ps2 games, but not ps2 games that require dualshock 2 controllers. So... yeah. PS2 is a great system with good games. Take my advice: Buy a PS2 system!!!
3 ps2
the ps2 is a great home gaming system. It has more titles than any othe system and has veryu good grafixs. Not to for get it the only system that plays Grand Theft Auto San Andreas right now. I have had my ps2 for 3 years and I have had no problems with it and I have friends with gamecubes and X boxes and all of them have had problems with thier systems.
4 Passes with 5 Stars!!!!
I don't know much about PS2's, but my 7 year old Grandson is an expert. According to him..... this smaller, sleeker, and new PS2 is EXCELLENT. If he's happy, Grandpa is happy. 5 Stars.
5 I NEED ADVICE!!!
Please help me! Here's my situation: I own a Gamecube and have for a few years. I've been saving my money for a PS3, but rumors are that thats gonna be around $400 and not come out till late 2006. I'm a bit tired of gamecube because of 2 main reasons: 1 - 3rd parties give better games to xbox and ps2, and 2 - NO ONLINE. should i buy the new ps2 or wait for ps3? Also, how is the ps2 online? if its no good i might get an xbox.
6 PS2 = Best Video Game system of all time
PS2 is hands down, the greatest and most popular video game system ever made. If you dont have a PS2 by now then purchase one immediately. Video games are Part of so many people lives. Also if you Purchase this system then I recomend New games Like Midnight Club 3, GTA san Andreas.
7 Wow!
Wow!
Ive just got the slim ps2 today and im really surprised at how small it really is. The Longest ive played it so far was 2hours straight and it gets kinda hot, but no were near enough to affect the game play. Since i got it for my birthday, i got money too, and now i am buying gran turismo 4, which i highly recomend as a first game starter. My brother has had ps2 (regular) for around 5 years... Its 2 differences are larger, and you have to buy an internet adapter seperatly. So i have been playing ps2 for quite a few years i have a few recomendations...
Ratchet and Clank 2 or 3
Any Gran turismo
Awlays when buying a ps2, remeber to buy a memory card and an extra controller.
I have 1 more thing to say, im not just a fan of ps2, check out the others too!
8 Great System
I must say I have greatly enjoyed my new Slim PS2. First off, It is unbelievably small. When I first opened the box, I had a hard time finding it! The size if great since it could fit anywhere. Second, the size does not mean anything from the original PS2 (except HDD) is not on this one. It still has a fan (it couldn't run without one!) and most Slim PS2's do not overheat (some do but only when you place your PS2 is the worng places, like on a shaggy carpet). The next best thing about the PS2 is its games. It has the largest game selection from PS1 and PS2 games. It has exclusives like Soncom 2, Gran Tursimo 4, Final Fantasy series and other great games.

Now, the downfalls of the PS2. It's true that the graphics of the PS2 are not as flasy as the Xbox or GB, but I could care less. If you want the best graphics, play on the computer. Last, you need a multitap to play to play more than 2 players and the online is not as good as the XBox.

If I were you, and you want a great selection of games, then get the PS2 and start your growing collection of games today. Because, when it all comes down to it, games are the most vital part of a console.
9 Wow?
Just another ps2 attempt at getting cold hard cash i bought this from gamestop after hearing all your rave reviews on it and after playing x box for three years this system was simply weak the graphics do not compare with x box's online is choppy (what do you expect its free) people with 56k modems can play online witch makes for a horrible online experience no content download no hard drive NO FAN because a cant seem to find one all these bull smack that oh umm the x-box is so huge well listen chumpo you wanna know why its so huge can you store new levels new vehicles on those ps2 memory cards i dont think so. As for games common all the good games for ps2 eventually come out for x-box anyways so shut up and with way better graphics. I am sorry to say but this is one system i am very happy to say i got used so i got me a full refund. I i offended you i am very sorry it's my opinion anyways so dont get all buthurt there is one game i loved it was gran turismo 4 but with forza just arund the corner there will be no need for me to touch ps2 anywys (plus project gotham racing 2 ive had it for about 2 years and i still play it not like grand turismo 3 with i beat and threw it out the window.)
10 New designed ps2
Ps2 is over all really cool in the sence that it has good graphiics. meaning the characters are clearly seen. the new desing talkes up less space so you have more storage room. It also plays dvds, the graphics when watching a dvd are just like watch it on a dvd player.. they are great. The bad thing about the is that when you leave it on it gets really hot easily so leave out where it canget air when its on. and the memory cards are expensive but it holds like 12 games. that my review.
11 A Bad Thing!
The PS2 Slim can melt your discs if you play for more than three hours. Otherwise it is great.

12 Great game system but get older version
The playstation 2 system has been around since October 2000. When it first came out, it had a motorized tray to put the disc in and it also had a cooling fan (which is a good thing to have). The new version of the PS2 which came out in November 2004 is slimmer yes but doesn't have the two options listed above. It's a lot less durable and it heats up A LOT faster! My friend has one and after playing it only 2 hours, the bottom is really hot. Anyone who knows anything about electronics knows that heat is not the best thing for electrica parts. In most cities that have used video game stores, most stores sell the older PS2 systems for around $100. I'd hightly recommend buying one of those as opposed to the new version. You can't beat an original!
13 I am very happy with my PS2
I have had XBOX since it came out and have been playing PS2 on friend's and family's PS2s for the past couple of years. Like many others, a certain exclusive game made me finally add another system. For me, that game was GT4. What I didn't expect however, was how awesome the new design looks. Its razor thin and looks ridiculously small next to my XBOX. If it were any thinner, it would be impossible to plug in the powercord. The engeneering on the machine is fantastic. Without a fan, it has stayed astonishly cool through hours of play. If you have the old design and are thinking of upgrading to the new one, you are NOT alone. I know several people who have done this and not looked back. If your a convert from xbox, I also reccomend KILLZONE in addition to GT4, to get started. I also have been using my PS2 as a DVD player, and purchased the remote, although it important to note that unlike XBOX, you DO NOT need the remote because you can control all of the functions with the regular controler. Another difference is that it has two controller ports in contrast to XBOX's four. If you play a lot with friends and family like I do, make sure you have access to a multiport. I have abused it a bit (dropping it etc) and have had zero problems... In conclusion, BUY THE THING, AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
14 Best game library and great system
This system is redesigned from the old ps2 and is significantly thinner (about the with of a small paperback book) and weighs 50% less and it's all for the same price as the older models, and still has the 2 usb ports for headsets and keyboards as well as OPTICAL out for Dolby Digital high quality sound. The only changes made were that they did away with the IEEE 1384 (I-link) port so you have to get the new designed multitap for 4+ players, new upright stand, you CAN NOT use the ps2 hdd with this system, top-loading disk tray so there's no more malfunctioning disk drive, intigrated IR reciever for remote access without the small adapter for some of the older ps2 models (also allows you to turn ps2 on/off with SEPERATELY SOLD SONY ps2 remote) and this system has intigrated network abilities (including dial-up internet)so you don't have to buy an adapter. This system also has the best game library and features games like ratchet and clank 3(highly recommend) and jak 3. The game library has 2X more games than that of the xbox and more choice and less "kiddie games" than the gamecube. The graphics are great but the x-box does has better graphics. This system is my favorite out of all three and I would recomend getting it.
15 PS2 is the worst system ever
o' bid me leap, rather than play ps2,
from off the battlements of yonder tower
or walk in theivish ways or bid me lurk
where serpents are chain me with roaring bears
or shut me nightly in a charnel-house
o'er-cover'd quite with dead men's rattling bones
with reeky shanks and yellow chapless skulls
or bid me go into a new-made grave
or hid me with a dead man in his shroud
things that to hear them told have made me tremble
and i will do it without fear or doubt.
16 PS2 gave me carpal tunnel syndrome, Stay Away !
I unwittingly bought a PS2, not knowing that I'd get a god awfull small game controller. I used it for a month and now I can't hardly move my hands or my fingers. Don't buy Playstation 2. They've ruined my future. I'm writing this review right now by using a voice typing program that Microsoft published especially for people who've ended up in my poor situation.
17 Totaly Awesome
The PS2 no matter how bad the reviews are this is the BEST system.
DVD Player
Awesome Graphics (don't listen to anyone who says they are bad)
Wide selection of games

DO NOT BUY AN XBOX they are the worst
I HATE MICROSOFT
18 Awsome
The Ps2 has been out for a while now but never lost its charm. It's a great system and has a little something in it for everyone. I have one and it's brought me much joy. The games available for this system is almost endless there are games ranging from final fantasy to pac-man. plus the new design is amazing its so small that you can take it anywere with you on the road, and yet it still retains all the graphics and sound capabilites as the first PS2.
19 DO NOT BUY THIS
DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You see the old ones are great but these have no fan so it will die in one year or less!!Buy the bigger ones.
20 Fantastic,FANTASTIC!!!Thank you Sony
Sony your the best!Buying this is highly Recommened.I bought it for 300 Cha Ching but it was worth it.I hope it does not let you down.
21 AMAZING!!!
Ive had the slim ps2 since it came out, i have no problem with it and it runs fine. My friends are amazed at how slim it is.. The XBOX and the old ps2 are just too big.. this ps2 is so tiny, it DOES NOT overheat, i play it for hours straight with no problems. its fast, it has a optical outlet, ethernet, internet, and its truly amazing.
22 It's pretty good but...
My dad bought this system when it first came out. (he let somebody borrow his PS1 and it got dropped down the stairs when he was taking it home. So he just bought the 'new' PS2.)I's a pretty good system. But the games are bring or just hard to play. Sometimes, you could only play from certain angles and I personally find some of the PS1 games more fun such as some of the boardgames released on PS1.(Monopoly,LIFE?) Or Gran Turismo. Those were fun games. But the only few games I have found entertaining were The Simpsons: Road Rage and The Sims Bustin' Out. But some of this systems games are just boring. Either way, I am getting a Gamecube and just letting my sisters have the PS2. So I end saying this: Playstation 2 is good but not great.
23 Well..not much of a surprise
yes i know this may sound harsh, but the system isnt that great. dont get me wrong, the graphics and gameplay are G-R-E-A-T. iam saying that sony isnt handing us anything new. besides the graphics change it would be hard to tel if it was a PS1 or a PS2.You know i was really pulling for them to roll in a built in memory system. that would have been great. well you cant do to much so i guess this is wut we get......at least its better then the gamecube. you can see my reviews for the GC under nintendo gamecube.
24 Thanks For Nothing, Sony! This PS2 Sucks BIG TIME!
I bought this PS2-Slim for my husband right when it came out! Less than 1 month later it overheated then just stopped working! We sent it to Sony for replacement and they sent us a new one! And guess what? My husband opened the box and played with it for only half an hour and then it stopped playing the disc giving a "The disc could not be read" error! To make sure there was nothing wrong with our discs, we tried them with the older PS2 and they were just fine! This new PS2-slim sucks! My husband had to go back to the older design, which is much better (older PS2 is 3 years old now AND still runs GREAT!!) Yes, we agree that the new PS2-slim has a very lighter weight and and easily-portable design, but it is not much fun if it dies on you every half an hour! So in general even though this new slim PS2 has a great built-in Network, and cool design and and a smaller size, it is not fun at all for it always heats-up so fast, gives so many errors, and dies within months or even hours!! The Power Supply also died within a matter of months! This is so frustrating! ( We almost wanna throw it outta the window!) By the way, our PS2 is used very lightly by an adult. I wonder if Sony tests its products efficiently/enough before they release this lousy product to the markets! I would give the new PS2-slim a ZERO Star, but (due to amazon) I had to leave a minimum of One Star ... This PS2-Slim we have is going back to were it came from, and we are back to the older one! We personally would not recommend it to family & friendst, but it is up to you to decide... As to you SONY, thanks for nothing!
25 good so far
Well, I have to give it four stars because I haven't had it for very long (3 months), and I only have the PS1 to compare it to. So far, however, it has worked great. After owning a reliable, fully functional PS1 for the last few years, I expect nothing but the same from this gaming console.

The only problem I've had is that it doesn't seem to want to recognize one of my Dance Dance pads. Strange. It's not the pad, because it still works with my PS1. And the other pad works fine. *shrug* I don't know what to say about that.

You can use your PS1 controllers on the PS2, so you don't have to buy extra stuff to play two-player games. The compact design may help it travel more, but I don't intend to use it for that.

I've been playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas mostly, but I've rented other games, and I've been happy with the way they've all been running. The graphics are truly amazing. The processing speed blows my mind.

I don't know, however, if people shouldn't just wait for the PS3 to come out next year (2006).
26 PS2 is a great system
A reveiwer said this Fran's=Franchise
Nintendo fans everywhere, do not buy this, period. Not even if you plan on using it for BB gun practice or fun with firecrackers, even if you really want to. This product is a SCAM. I've played on it 'cause a good friend of mine owns one. Now that he's played the GameCube, he wants to get rid of his PS2 and get a GameCube, too. So I asked him, "Well, why?" and he let me play on his PS2.
I must say that the PS2 is the worst thing (besides the PSP) to ever come into the world of video games. The controller's still incredibly tiny, so it feels like you're holding a slippery bar of wet soap. And the games! The games have nowhere near the good plotlines that Nintendo's games have. Sure, they have great graphics, but everything else just takes a dive, especially in the Story and Playability departments. The main menu is confusing, and to play multiplayer, you have to pay $50 bucks to get an expensive multitap! TALK ABOUT A CHEAP STRATEGY, SONY!!!

Now, before I go, I want to announce that I have recently discovered an equation that shows how PS2's games' quality compares to GameCube games':

PS2 plus graphics plus movies plus internet plus extra features you'll never use is less than GameCube

Simple, huh? Oh, and Nintendo fans, flame these Sony monstrosities whenever you can. Your favorite game company's fate depends upon it!

Very most sincerely, WarriorIng

P.S. If there's a gamers' chat room anywhere around here, please let me know in your next PS2 or PSP review. And in that review, please say my name (w-a-r-r-i-o-r-i-n-g) and say any compliments or insults you have to me; I love reading both. Bye!

My opinon on this warrioring guy first of all Nintendo gamecube
died PS2 and XBOX beat the hell out of it in sales and ratings
Gamecube has the least games of all and it only has mabye 2 good game fran's. PS2 has the most game's of any console xbox has by far the best graphics out of the three and lots of good Fran's. Only thing gamecube graphics can produce is cellshaded stuff witch are out of style. Yes gamecube is geared toward the E rated games.

P.S. and if warrioing gets this Gamecube games plotlines suck
27 Four Months Later and It is D.O.A.
I've been a fan of Sony's gaming machines since the debut of the PS1 all those years ago.

When my big old box of a PS2 (one of the first to come out, mind you) up and died in November my heart was broken. But, thankfully, the PSTwo's were coming out the same day. What a great coincidence! I ran out and bought one.

Flash forward four months. Here I sit staring at the now-dead PSTwo. She will no longer play any games or DVDs, giving instead the dreaded "The Disk Could Not Be Read" error (modified up from the old "Disk Read Error" message--thanks, SONY!). Lens cleaners have failed and there's no little white wheel inside that a felt tip marker and some internet help can adjust (as was the case in the older models). Did it overheat? She gave off a nasty smell..and it's known that the PSTwos get very warm to the touch, despite being loaded up with heat sinks and yes, even a little fan that does a great job blowing the already scorching hot air on to critical parts. Was it just an unlucky, bad unit? Did it have something to do with Sony's rumored use of cheap parts? Do these new units have some inherent design flaw which results in a very short and terminal lifetime?

I don't know. You decide...just keep this in mind before you plop down a hundred and fifty bucks. The PS2 is still the best console with the best selection...buy criminey! Whatever happened to the days when you'd buy a product and it *wouldn't* fall apart after a few months??

Happy gaming...

28 Disappointed
I've had a PS1 for over 5 years and it has never given me a whiff of a problem. I finally got around to "upgrading" to a PS2 after playing my buddy's (the older, larger version) a lot the last few weeks. The games are great and I find the controllers to be well-designed and manageable, particularly if you already have experience with a PS.
However, the transition to the "new" smaller PS2 has apparently caused problems. The one I bought at Bestbuy worked fine for the first 5 minutes I played it, then it would freeze up while trying to load a sound effect and just repeat that sound effect over and over again. This happened regardless of the game played (PS1 or PS2). I took it back and was informed by the guy at Bestbuy that it's most likely an overheating problem and that it is apparently common to the new smaller PS2. It's a shame because I think the games are generally quite good and I loved the PS1, but think twice about picking up this miniature version that apparently hasn't been tested out very well.

30 Good System, Tired of Lies
I am tired of hearing people saying this ps2 has no fan. It does. It has an internal fan. I have had no problems out of it. I can sit and play gta san andreas and not have to worry about over heating. So if u don't have one, and u have that old piece of crap ps2. Don't judge this one
31 Multitap
I already had a playstation 2, however I bought the newer version with the slimer design. I love it. What I do not love, is the fact that even though I know that my old Multitap will not work on this one, I cannot find the new one that will operate on this system anywhere. I have went to Major retailers looking for the new Multitap and no one has them. Just the old ones. Needless to say, if your are going to sell a product that requires a new Multitap, then you should make that Multitap available to the public. I wish now that I would have just kept the old one, or bought an x-box.
32 My first Modern Console!
I bought my PS2 Console at Best Buy after searching every store in town, I'm quite impressed with the smallness, and graphics of this system, and having the DVD player with a really good game console is great, I do own a PS1, but wanted something that would play all the new games (and Star Wars Battlefront).
The only problem is though they have removed the two buttons for power, but you have to plug, and unplug every morning, and every
evening.
All in all I think this is a great system.
33 Better then the old one.
My old PS2 broke by my brother tripping over it all the time. The stupid laser thing that reads the disk went off the little track. So every time this happened I would have to unscrew everything put the laser back on track and put it back together. After that, the power cord came undone. (Which is what the power runs through.) I just barely fixed it. The old PS2 is too delicate. If you buy the new slimmer one none of this would have happened because the laser beam is right when you open the disc tray. Which means no more broken PS2s.
The only reason why I gave this game a four is my only complaint. You can't play games on the new PS2 for two long hours. Because there is no fan to cool the system down.Every time you would take out the game it would feel like a fire.So Madden fans are out of luck.

34 A Gamer's Dream Machine
PlayStation 2 is a lot of fun. The graphics are pretty realistic and the games are a lot of fun. There are so many features that make it the best gaming system out there.

First, it has there biggest game library available. PS2 & PS1 games can be played on PS2 so there's a game out there for everyone.

Next, about 85 million Americans (about 7 out 24) own a PS2 so there are a lot of people to play with. And PS2 gamers are all different ages from five years old to forty year old "kids" and probably a lot of people even older than that.

Also, The new PS2 model comes with a network adapter built in the PS2 so you are ready to play people online without buying any extra accessories (except a phone (dial-up) or Ethernet (DSL or Broadband) cable). Some games can play online with a dial-up and Broadband Internet access but most games play online with a broadband access only. Broadband users need a broadband or DSL modem and an Ethernet cable (wired users) or an Ethernet adapter (wireless users but not all wireless accessories are compatible with PS2 so make sure to check first). Dial-up users can just plug right into a phone jack and play. The best part of PS2's online play is that its FREE!!! (unlike XBox for $49.99 a year or GameCube's $9.99 a month for the two games available for online play).

Another good thing about PS2 is accessories and games are easy to find and abundant in many places. I also own a GameCube and games are harder to find and are more expensive. Also, most GameCube games are intended for little kids and also there are pretty much no online games (except for two). PS2 games are available pretty much anywhere (I've seen some racing games at Pepboy's and Auto Zone and some games and Menard's [a hardware store in the Midwest]). Memory cards and controllers are cheap and available in a lot of places.

Another good reason is the size. It's very small (the picture makes it look big). It's about a little more than an inch high, nine inches long (from the left to the right) and about 6.5 inches from the front to the back. A vertical stand is available to make it take up hardly any space.

One last good reason to buy it is the extra things available for PS2. One reason is the EyeToy. Its exclusive to the PS2. Its like a web cam you put on top of your TV. You use your body to play the game. (games include fighting a guy, riding a skateboard, heading a soccer ball, using your hands to dance and use maracas, and to swat away evil things. A LOT MORE games are available). Also, a dance mat is available for dancing games (like the games available in the arcades). These games are a lot of fun and make a great game for parties. One last accessory is a gun controller. You shoot guys on the screen (for certain games [Time Crisis 1, 2, 3, and more]) like the games in the arcade.

Also, PS2 can play audio CD's and DVDs without buying any extra accessories (a DVD remote is available but not necessary unlike XBox).

This is why you should buy a PS2. The numerous features make it a the best system to buy out of PS2, GameCube, and XBox. For choosing a system, I recommend to choose based on which system your friends have, what games you like on that system, and what features you want. I recommend NOT choosing based on who has the better graphics or to pick a system for just one game. PS2 is definitely worth the $149.99 and is my favorite system.
35 oh my god
What happened to the ps2!its the size of a ps2 game case!i love the smallness!the only con is it takes a little longer to load than the big ps2.other than that,EXCELLENT!!

36 One of the best systems out there!
The improvements on the PS2 even with the smaller size is evident even when putting in scratched disc's, the new laser eye is great and loads quickly, the improved size has sparked controversy as to the missing fan and Hard Drive option being taken away. The missing fan could cause problems for those who do not keep the new unit properly ventilated. If you are a computer nut like me, you understand the importance of proper ventalation for electronic units of all types, so even the Xbox and the gamecube are not exempt from this problem. This new PS2 is very simaler to a thin laptop, care must be taken. For the PS2 gamers such as myself I find the new slimline to be what the doctor ordered it is smaller, just as much power, a new pop-up loading bay, and upgraded laser eye. This proves that Sony is taking the nessasary steps to keep its gamers happy, don't let things like these rumors of overheating and frailty keep you from purchasing it. The system is very fun to just look at and you do have to see the unit personaly to understand the problems that inexperianced users are crying about. So as with all electronic units, if you take care of it........IT WILL LAST! Gran Turismo 4 was the first game I popped in it and it runs and looks like a dream. I am not going to get into the hype of saying XBOX PS2 or Gamecube rules, but I did feel the need to let others know about the problems, and the solutions with the new smaller size. I would recommend this product to everyone, offering the warning to new gamers to keep it out in the open where there is proper ventalation and it is a good idea to purchase the vertical stand, Playing the PS2 is not going to kill it, do you really believe Sony would release their most popular product with out testing it first? Regardless, if you are still worried about these issues then I encourage you to do what I did. Go to Toys R Us, get the $170.00 bundle that offers a one year extended warrenty after the experation of the manufacturers warrenty, and then buy the vertical stand.
37 Xbox vs. PS2,which one prevails
Most people preffer PS2 than Xbox. Why is this? It's because the PS2 is the kick butt system.PS2 has more games than Xbox. The most wanted game for PS2 is GTA4 and for the Xbox it's HALO2.The PS2 is slimmer now, which makes it more better.Xbox can let players interact with others by getting the online modem, but this doesn't mean PS2 can't do it too.Thats why Xbox can't compete.
Why do you think Xbox is better cause it has a portable tv,well PS2 has it too and it's better. If there was a compatition Ps2 would win.PS2 has a DVD player Xbox doesn't.Most people denie xBox when they see a PS2 because PS2 is Playstation reincarnated, but now it's keeping up with modern life. How much people bought PS2 like 500 and counting,Xbox in the other hands sold like 200 and decreasing cause it's wack and people are selling it to buy a PS2.True HALO2 got sold more than 50,000 or something like that in a week, but thats because the game is addictive.so when your stuck between Xbox or PS2,PS2 will always prevail over Xbox.
38 Satisfied!
I recently purchased the new PS2 after my old one broke. I was never compleatly happy with the old playstation 2. It never read the discs fast enough and was very noisy. This new design is great. The size is very small, the sound is minimal, there is a network adapter built right in, there is a remote sensor built in... the list could go on and on. My point is that this new PS2 has brought me hours of fun and excitment. If you dont have a playstation 2 or are just looking for a change, look no further!
39 Get the other PS2 read this to find out why!
Ok I have the old PS2 but I wanted the slim version, well lets just say im glad I didnt get it heres why: The new slim version has no fan in it but the old one did, so if your one of those people who playes ur game system for an hour or 2 dont buy this because theres no fan to cool it down. Your game and system will over heat and break. So im stickin with the old one and I think you should to.
40 Some people are not very helpful
Something is pissing me off. It's when a lot of you people write a 2 sentence reveiw saying "Ps2 sucks. Buy xbox." Well I've got news for you. That dosn't help anyone. What these reveiws are for are to help people decide what video game system to buy. So if you're going to say something like that, why don't you give some resons why it "sucks." Some might say its graphics suck. But first of all PS2's graphics don't suck. Maybe xbox has better graphics but listen to this. Xbox is like almost 2 feet wide and up and down. The PS2's new design is a quarter the size of xbox and it's got a huge selection of games. Also xbox's controller is huge and has like 15 buttons on and the buttons are all scattered out. The PS2 controller is way smaller and the butttons are very well laid out. So if you're going to write a reveiw, say something helpful.
41 Ps2 Slim is way better then Ps2 but still cannot beat xbox
If u want a ps2 u should get this but if ur new to gamming u should first get an XBOX, i just bought a ps2 for Final Fantasy! Sony has really over priced there ps2!
42 Stop It. Really. Please.
I just want to say, to all the people that post reviews saying "PS2 is crap, buy an Xbox/Gamecube/whatever!!!!1111 LOLOLLOL." Stop it. Really, it's annoying having to wade through all this crap to get to any decent low reviews (because I like to know what's bad about the system, thank you). Honestly, are you guys like, 5? And as a special message to 'Ryan "Red Wings baby!!"', if you want a real system that has its own memory, download music onto, has superb online play in 99% of games, amazing graphics and more serious games (and since when does the PS2 NOT have serious games? The GTA, MGS, and DMC series', a million horror games, tons of FPS, etc.), then you know what? BUY A PC. PC gamers laugh at people like you. And newsflash, Halo isn't like, totally the best FPS either. Best console FPS? Sure. But if it were originally released on PC without ever being released on Xbox, it would've just been an average FPS (what it is now). And so, to all you people, STOP ANNOYING EVERYONE ELSE! And bringing down the rating with dumb, completely unecessary, "reviews".
43 The world's most popular video game system gets even better!
I purchased an XBox two months ago and I like it allot especially conisdering all the bells and whistles it has. I like the XBox and I highly recommend it to everyone as it is possibly the best "overall" gaming console available. My last video game machine before this was the Dreamcast which I still consider as one of the best video game consoles ever released. Neverless, I have wanted a PS2 system for quite some time since there are so many great games that have been made for it and I had recently heard that SONY had released a newer and smaller version with some improvements. Several days ago after searching around for stores that carried it I finally found a place that had it in stock at one of the large electronics chain stores. A friend gave me a new DEMO of a boxing game by EA Sports (Fight Night Round 2).

After opening the box I realized how small this system was which I really liked. It is a little bigger (a half inch longer and an inch wider) than the size of two DVD boxes stacked on top of each other. I popped in the DEMO game and WOW! I love this little powerhouse of an entertainment system. I actually played the DEMO boxing game for hours. I was so excited about my new little system that the next day I ran out an bought "Hot Shots Golf Fore!" golf game, a Logitech wireless controller, and the Sony 8MB memory card. I have the system set up on top of my rather small bedroom dresser next to a 13 inch TV. I can play music CDs, DVDs (including recordable types) and of course all PS2 & PS1 games.

This new PS2 is really a "must have" considering SONY has made many small improvements in the machine compared to the older and larger PS2s. The new slim PS2 plays DVDs and CDs very well and it supports wide-screen TV format, progressive scan, Dolby surround, DTS, etc. I did a detailed visual examination of the laser pickup and the rather beefy laser tracking motor and it seems to be really well built despite the new slim PS2's smaller size. The top loading flip mechanism is similar to the old PS1 design and there are quite a few vents to provide good ventilation for the main processors. I believe SONY is using a newer, smaller, slightly faster, cooler running PS2 on a chip for the processing. I found the load times not to be a problem and in the system setup you will find settings for faster DVD player tracking and there is even a graphic enhancement setting. One of the main drawbacks and a big reason for me not buying a PS2 before now was what I read about problems with the DVD disc tracking system which caused read errors, slow load times. There were also problems with jagged graphics in some of the earlier games. In the games I have played so far on the new slim PS2 I have not seen any of these problems with the machine. I will admit that the XBox does seem to have more detailed textures and background graphics especially on the massive games like Halo 1 and Halo 2 but compared to the games I played on the slim PS2 I have not noticed a night and day graphical difference between the two machines. It is also important to remember that most software companies write a game title to port across multiple systems. When you get the XBox version it often is not that different or maybe just a notch better graphically than the PS2 version. When a game is written exclusively for XBox then you can see where the extra power of that system enables more capacity for programming eye candy but this is done most often for the exclusive games.

I have not tried the broadband online gaming for PS2 but from what I have read most people agree that the XBox is far superior for online gaming if you don't mind paying the $40-$50 a year for Microsoft's XBox Live subscription service.

PROS: Small footprint, very portable, many small enhancements over the previous PS2 version, built in high speed ethernet and built in modem for online gaming, largest game library of any console, plays DVDs, CDs, PS1 and PS2 games. As of right now while I write this review the online internet game play is free of charge.

CONS: Not as graphically powerful as XBox. Not as well designed for online broadband gaming as XBox. The PS2 is the oldest design of the current generation of available console gaming machines (Gamecube, XBox, PS2). It uses outdated 8MB memory cards and there is no larger capacity hard drive storage like the one that comes standard with the XBox or as was available as an add-on for the older large PS2. You must purchase a multitap if you want to use more than two controllers.

Despite being the oldest of the current consoles this is really a great little machine. It is well designed and it seems to be durable. I highly recommended the new slim PS2 to all console gamers even if you are a current owner of the XBox, Gamecube, or older large PS2 game systems.

The bottom line...Five Stars!
44 Thin Ps2
this console is very slim and is a little bigger than the cases for ps2 games. i noticed that the games load slightly faster due to the 300mhz processer. the graphics are also slightly improved. i recomend buying the stand because it is very fargile. i have my console in the basement and it gets dusty, with the old one the lense would get dusty and wouldent read cd's so i had to take it apart to clean it and with this one you dont. A++++++
45 Imortant Question!
I was thinking of getting the PS2 Slim and I was wanting to play online because I have never done it before. Could someone please tell me if you can play online with a RoadRunner Broadband Connection. I heard you could only play online if you have AOL Broadband. Could someone please let me know if you can play with Roadrunner, Thanks
46 The Ps2.5
My dad got me a slim ps2, and it is great! It has all the features of the old ps2,minus the overheating and the hugeness. But whatever you do, DON'T STEP ON IT! I stepped on my ps2.5, and it just died, 3 months after I got it. If you can take good care of it, then get ps2.5. If not, stick with the original ps2.
47 BOOOOO
I got one cause my old 1 died and it was smaller than a sheet of paper It had no HDD bay to play online and messed with the gameplay of my games I say booo because no HDD bay no HDD bay means no more online play they tried to replace it with ethernet all that does is browse the net wich im doing now :P to you sony
48 Good Unit, Massive Library, Excellent Staying Power.
Okay I just bought this Version 2 Playstation 2 over at Wal-Mart for $150. I was first a bit dissapointed it didn't come with a memory card as I had to buy one (16mb for $23) but it didn't totally turn me off since I know I'll only have to buy it once. Anyway, on to the unit itself; The new slimmer PS2 is tiny, just about 1.5 discs in length and looks slick. It was possible to do this because the unit's cpu is only about 300Mhz, not very fast, but for the games it plays, it does a great job. Addressing the heat issue, people have been commenting that this unit overheats very quickly, I played GTA4:SA last night for 3.5 hours and the unit didn't even surpass the heat that the first revision (larger) PS2 encountered. The unit seems sturdy enough to me, no less than the first in my opinion. Seems more that people are setting their units in concealed areas (drawers maybe?) where there is not enough normal air-flow to allow heat escape, which any person who knows anything about electronics should have knowledge of.

Moving along, it's nice to have the ethernet port built in and not be a bulky afterthought. I'll be trying out the online functions tonight after getting a game that rates well for PS2 online play so that I can develop an opinion of PS2-Online capabilities with Roadrunner Cable. Doubling as a DVD player is handy since it is such a small unit so you can't really go wrong there. Now addressing the game library; The PS2 library of games is HUGE. The fact that it has backwards compatability is a huge plus since I still sincerely enjoy playing FF7, Xenogears, Legends of Dragoon etc etc. Noting that I enjoy games that take time to develop great stories should be pretty obvious after that little rundown of games that I enjoy. That being said, Sony is RPG king. I like many other fighting and shoters as well, but most of that is done on my computer with a mouse and keyboard (the shooters anyway). So seeeing as how PS1 stuck around for so long we are definitely going to see excellent staying power on this lil' unit even after the PS3 is released. In short, many many games to choose from, you can't go wrong with a PS2, especially this slim version that is unless you want to play the games that require the HD (Final Fantasy 11 MMO, which imo turned out a tad blah since its ruthlessly farmed to hell by gil exchange companies)! It may lack Halo but that's what a computer is for.

One last thing, people say their PS2 scrathes their discs, look in your manual packet that came with the unit. It says do not move your PS2 with the game in the unit, it may scratch your disc. It's noted!
49 get an xbox
get an xbox it may seem bigger than the PS2 but its better. Its a true gaming device
50 PS2 SLIM REVIEW
This is one of the best systems I have ever bought. The reason I think this is because gamecude has wussy games on it, Xbox only has like 10 games but because of online play they are great. Now ps2 has online play with a new slike system. This system is the size of an average children's book, I would swear on it. Fof the record this doesn't overheat, i played GTA:San Andreas for 12 hours straight and it didn't remotely get hot, the hold one got hotter than this and this one makes much less noise so u can by it for a cheap DVD or CD player, the only thing bad is that i needed to buy a new multitap for it because the other for the original didn't fit. Last you can find these systems at your EB games store, i just bought it 4 days ago
51 Ready to go
The PS2 is so small its not even funny....hardiwred and ready to go for internet usage and dvd's this system is a must have....its small...compactatble ane easy ti use...comes with the software needed to get you ready for the internet and all you need are the proper hookups on your tv if you have a cheep piece of metal that doesnt all ready have one....while before there was a shortage it seems the PS2 is becoming widely availabel agin in all your favorite video game suppling stores....get them there....not online....here they are overcharging plus you have to pay shipping...go to a STORE PEOPLE...its 149.99....not like 189.99 like some people are chrging...its rediculouse....anyways youll love the new compact sized that hardly takes up any room and is easy to move around or take to a friends house....plus do not waste your money on a remote for the dvd player....the contorller works fine by hitting select while playing a dvd that brings up all the buttons a remote has....save your money for those precious games. I havent noticed any problems in overhaeting like som ehave mentioned or any problem with the lasar eye...but just be careful...dont keep your PS2 directlyu under a light t5o help keep it cool and dont joggle the PS2 which in the manual says COULD damage the lasar...so just be gentle and have fun!
52 What's going on???
I really don't understand this...

I have had a PSOne for several years, and was about to make the leap to PS2. It was interesting that as soon as I was about to make the leap, a NEW PLAYSTATION TWO model came out. I said, yeah, sure, I'm ready, sign me up, here's my credit card number, let me order one. I had already selected several PS2 titles to order after having researched them and what I wanted.

BUT NOW, WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON???

I have ordered so many things from AMAZON, and now I can't find this ONE ITEM! A new designed Playstation TWO console/hardware.

I also went to EBGames, BestBuy, Circuit City, Walmart, Target.

WTF???

I can't find this newly designed PS2 console ANYWHERE! Not even here at good old reliable Amazon! And I hear all kinds of bad things about this new version. But no hard information on just what the problem is here. Some folks here have commented on it, but after doing endless searches on the "new" PS2, I've come up pretty much clueless.

Why is this "new" PS2 so darn hard to find? Why are even reviews of it so darn hard to find? Are the few reviews I've read about SEVERE problems with the unit, true? Why can't I find this PRODUCT/MERCHANDISE just about anywhere, easily for sale? Is it a shortage of product? Or something much more secretive and evil? Is there a problem with the new PS2? A serious one? Has this product been recalled, secretly? Why can't I find this to purchase anywhere? What's going on???

Any emails about all of this appreciated, but heck, I was all ready to BUY this, but there is something very fishy about the new PS2. I'd still love to upgrade from my old trusty (and perfectly working) PSOne to the Playstation 2 NEW VERSION, but not only can't I find this on Amazon, but virtually nowhere else.

What's the problem here? Is this new PS2 garbage and a coverup and recall in progress, or what? I don't get it. Doesn't Sony want my money or what?

Till all of this confusing "new" PS2 nonsense and confusion clears up, I will stick to my old PSOne and in time, if this is not resolved, I'll start thinking seriously about X-Box.
53 Slim Twos....Don't buy!
Hello,

I do not recommend this product. The new PSTwos, the SLim Twos have problems. If you read the info about this product throughtout the Internet, you will see the Slim Twos have probelms with laser going out and over heating problems. This product will have problems, even if you modify the console with or without a MOD Chip. As for now, there are not hard drive support. I heard they are working on a USB to external hard drive but the communication and transfer rate is very slow.

If I were you, I would go back to the last BIG version of the Playstation, v9 or v10.
54 Excellent Buy
I am definately impressed with the new model PS2. There are a few comprimises like no more hard drive support but it makes up with its portibility and performance. I used to have plenty of trouble lugging my old model ps2 around but now in since this model came out that is no longer a problem. The new model still has all the features of the original (Well almost) and can still perform just as well. This model can still acheive high frame rates and offer you its DVD playing capabilities while being as portable as a GameCube. Also sony's massive third party game support makes this a system for all ages with more titles than Gamecube or XBox.
55 Please stop Bashing
Please stop bashing the PS2. It has some of the best graphics around and I am 100% sure it has most of the best game titles. For example Metal Gear Solid. There is no competition as far as that game is concerned. The Cube has really cool titles such as Resident Evil 4, but the games are so limited and so does the XBOX. I really love HALO 2. They are all good systems in there own regards. Personally I am a PS2 fan but that gives me no ground to go around a bad talk the Cube and XBOX. And for all the haters out there just get ready for the arrival of the long awaited GRAN TURISMO 4. You all are going to swallow back your words
56 Xbox VS. Playstation 2
First of all, Playstation 2 has the best graphics I have ever seen! If you say no, you have seen Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater. Those are the best graphics. Second of all, Playstation 2 is thin so you can save lots of space by putting it next to your TV or DVD/VCR. The Xbox is this huge box that takes up a whole shelf. And it doesn't matter that you can put music on in the Xbox. Some people don't want music while they play! I will always be on the side of the Playstation 2. Thank you!
57 Playstation 2 - Good Review
I remember hearing about the first playstation 2 system coming to stores. Immediately I reserved a system so right when it became available I had one. Finally, getting it I remember how much fun the games were. The only problem was that the system was somewhat bulky, not allowing for easy transportation or storage.
Now, Sony came out with a brand new design of the Playstation 2 making it slimmer, sleeker, and an all-around better product. It's basically the same system, but they added an ethernet port for fast, online game play and the size of the system, being about a very slim paperback book, allows for almost pocket-carrying capabilities.
The one and only problem that I believe is the major problem with the playstation system are the games. Being cd's, the consumer must take care of the games well or, if scratched, could ruin the entire game and hault the use of it.
I would definitely recommend the new design of the Playstation 2 to all consumers interested in gaming. This slimmer and smaller version allows for endless possibilites of destinations to play.
58 Don't buy the Chumpstation 2!!
Xbox is for the serious gamers. If you like crappy graphics, horrible online play, and little kid games like Rachet and Clink, Spongebob Squarepants, and Crash Bandicoot then my all means buy the Chumpstation. If you are a serious gamer and like your unit with its own memory that you can download music to, online play that is insane, amazing graphics, more serious and adult games like Halo and Mechassualt then buy the Xbox

Chumpstation 2 - Ages 4 - 9 yrs old
Xbox - Ages 10 and over
59 comparing (three stars for graphics)
PS2 has vary bad grapgics. If you are planning on getting one then you should try it out first.XBOX has awesome graphics I know this cause I have an XBOX.If you want to play online with ps2 then you better check the monthly price witch is $26 a month. But if you like cheap stuff then think of XBOX live $6 a month or $70 a year.Really XBOX is better buy the graphics and online.Oh did I mention that Xbox can download music.

I'm 13 years old
60 What is Hapenning to Amazon.com?
Every time I enter to find some item now I found an 0.01 price what ACTUALY IS NOT THE REAL PRICE, this is just some spam inside the amazon.com. I just tried to buy a PS2 console, but the link that amazon is provinding take to me to some guy selling lenz for it or just some other stuff. Thank you amazon guys but ebay already exists! We just need the old amazon back, or if you decide to go like that, I'm just moving to the real ebay.
61 Good, Good, Good/Dishonest
You'll notice that i'm writing this review in the ps2 section. But i'm gonna be talking about gamecube and xbox. Xbox is the system i'm calling good/dishonest. I'll get to that later.
I'm 12. I own a gamecube and a ps2. And i've played xbox enough to know a lot about it. Now you might not trust what i'm about to say. But i swear to god that i'm telling you the truth. My dad and i have read so many reviews on all different sites. First of all this review is mainly for people who are only allowed to get one system and can't decide what to get.
If you are a person who likes great graphics and likes all the classic games like Mario and games like that and want a small, strong, portable system and aren't a big fan of violent games, gamecube is your system. If you love violent action games and don't mind bad graphics ps2 is your system. But if you are going to by a ps2, you should get the newer design. It's way smaller and the disk tray is way better. The older version's disk tray slides in and out and i have heard that it breaks a lot. The new ps2's disk tray pops right up.
Now xbox. If you love great graphics and don't like buying memory cards to save your games and you love the Halo games, and other good action games, get xbox. But listen. Xbox has coppied lots of games that were for ps2. Like the first two Grand Theft Auto games, and Max Payne, and more. But hey xbox is made by Microsoft. That's what Microsoft does unfortunately. What the hell do you expect? Also the xbox is very big.
Well that's my info. I hope this reveiw was helpful.
62 PS2 needs system link
When comparing PS2 to Xbox, to me the number of games available out weighs any debate on graphics. My major concern though is that there is no system link capabilities with PS2 like there is for Xbox. I find head to head gameplay from different monitors outrageously cool.
63 Great New PS2
great new design. i love how small it is. for those who don't have a ps2 go n get it. n even for those who do have a ps2, there's been some problems with my friend's old ps2s. their not able to play newer games, but this new ps2 will solve. n it doesn't seem lyke there's a way to fix the older ps2's
64 o.k.
This new ps2 is ok but the memory card 8mb won't work. Why is this? I brought it in 2 eb games and they fixed it then it still won't work.
65 THE BEST THING EVER MADE BY SONY!
YOU HAVE TO BUY IT ! IT IS SMALL,LIGHTWIEGHT,AND BETTER THAN ANY OTHER GAME SYSTEM. I JUST GOT ONE 1-14-05 I WAS SO FREAKEN HAPPY! ISAY ITS A MUST HAVE ITEM. IF YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE ONE DO WHAT I DID GET GTA SAN ANDRES, A MEMORY CARD, AND THE NEW PS2!

[...]
66 THE BEST THING SONY HAS MADE!!!!!!!!
THIS IS THE BEST SYSTEM EVER MADE! ITS SO COOL& SMALL. IF YOU DONT HAVE IT YOU NEEEEED IT! IF YOU DO GET IT DONT FORGET GTA SAN ANDRES! YOULL LOVE IT TRUST ME
67 AC ADAPTOR PROBLEM!!
I want all you potential buyers to beware of the new PS2. I just got off the phone with Sony tech support, and I'm shocked to find out that the AC adaptor that comes with the game is not sold separately. The one that I got 2 WEEKS ago has bad wires in it. When you move the wire, the power shuts off. So I asked the person I talked to if I could just buy a new adaptor, and he said that I would have to return it. Then the company will review it and decide if the damage could have been caused by "consumer misuse" or if it was truly defective. OH I'VE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE!!! If (should I say when) they decide that the product was not defective, even though it is, the one I sent in will be returned to me and my only option will be to buy a whole new game system. FOR ONE BROKEN WIRE IN A CORD THAT IS NOT ATTATCHED TO THE CONSOLE!!! What a crock of !@$#& BUYER BEWARE OF SELF-SERVING COMPANIES. The new PS 2 is FAR INFERIOR in quality than the original. I guess if they make the design 10x more fragile, and replacement parts unavailable, and can invalidate the warranty if they feel that damage "could have" been caused by the consumer, then you'll just have to buy one, two, maybe three more playstations. X box has just gained a new customer.
68 Total Junk... they burn up
Sony failed to consider one thing for this redesign.....A FAN!!!! I had to replace my original PS2, which finally died after about 5 years of abuse. It took me forever to find one of the "newer, slimmer" PS2 consoles. I did manage to buy one, and within 2 days of use, it died. I took the stupid thing back for an exchange, but the EB Games where I bought it was out, so I got a refund. (Great customer service by EB Games, by the way.) I got to talking to the girl that was working there, and she said that these have been recalled because they have been overheating. The fan that they put in it is just way too small to handle the heat generated by the unit, and the design is too small to allow proper heat dispersion. Apparently Sony is being very hush-hush about the recall, but now I know why I couldn't find a single one at Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, HH Gregg, or K-Mart. I was driving around all of Northeast Ohio for a day, getting more and more curious as to why none of these stores had any. I didn't think it was because they were super-popular, and it seems as though it certainly wasn't that. Way to go, Sony - Unleashing a redesigned piece of crap instead of just investing the time and dollars into developing the PS3. Dummies.
69 Can anyone just tell me what they think of the new PS2?
You all are supposed to be REVIEWING the new PS2, not bashing or praising other products. It's cool if your comparing it to the PS2 of old (which I do have). Read the Amazon.com guidelines and it will tell you that your review is to focus on the product at hand. Can anyone just tell me if it's worth trading in my Gen1 PS2 which (so far) is working okay? I could care less about Xbox or GameCube... I'd just read their reviews!
70 Info on new slim PS2 & a brief look at Sony console history
I'm happy I own a PS2. I enjoy playing the games and they're pretty good.

Some of the great things Sony did with their systems are worth a mention. At first, I owned the 30001 model. Then, I sold my unit after buying a 50001 model, which included the internet adapter, and now plays DVDs in anamorphic widescreen. (My old model did not play them anamorphically.) I bought the newer unit because I read an article in a videogame magazine that said there was a graphical improvement in models 33001 and later. I don't remember exactly what the improvements were because I read it a long time ago. These newly-redesigned, slim models make transportation easier. The power pack is now externally in the A/C wire, which means that's where all the weight went, but the unit is still smaller.

Although I prefer the new unit, I have two things, which are not really large enough to make complaints, but they may interest people who are considering buying the new model, or even replacing their old model with the new one.

You probably already know the newly-designed PS2 cannot use the hard disk drive that was sold with the Final Fantasy game a while back. If you bought one of these, you should keep your old one.

Another feature that changed is the method of ejecting the disc from the player. I think the idea of this new design is pretty good for guys like me that like to keep their console close by when they go places; however, the disc now ejects differently. Before, one could eject a disc by pressing a button and a motorized tray ejected out of the face of the unit; now, it ejects like a portable CD player, meaning it has a lid. When you press the button, the lid pops upward and the disc must be pulled from a spindle in the topside (if it's lying flat). At first, I thought the redisigned unit would now fit inside a certain spot in my entertainment center, but I cannot do this because the disc now ejects out of the top, and this means I need room around the top. Not a big deal, but a factor.

That's it, but if I may be critical of Sony for a moment without turning it into a smashing contest, Sony has always had one single flaw they never amend: the accessory-compatibility issue. First, in all of Sony's PS1 & PS2 machines, there are only two controller ports, which means PlayStation games rarely have four-player modes; so, unless you're a James Bond game fan, you probably didn't pay the $30 for the Multitap. This reinforces itself: since most people only have two controller ports, PlayStation videogame companies mostly make games that don't utilize the Multitap. Second, although it isn't hard to get an older model of the PS2, (again) the hard disc drive doesn't work with this new model. Third, the first, original PlayStation models had a Sony LinkCable port, but the Dual Shock model and afterward (including the redesigned PSOne model) eliminated the port. This means games you could normally play multiplayer by connecting two PlayStations with the LinkCable, you cannot do this anymore. Although not many people have the LinkCable, even fewer people have access to the feature now. Perhaps this has nothing to do with the PS2, but it does help prove Sony's history of designing a machine around its peripherals. In other cases, the changes were virtually always inarguable improvements to their unit. Why doesn't Sony make four controller ports? I don't know.
71 playstation 2, new or old?
hi everyone, i am a 14 year old guy and unfortunetly i do not have any systems. I am possibly going to be buying a playstation within a month, and was wondering if i should get the new PS2 or the original larger PS2? ive read many reviews for both and i am not being convinced of any side in particular... could anyone help?
72 To Buy? or Not Buy?
I bought this for my kids for christmas and they love it. Although, my nephew, who works for sony, told me that they will release the new Playstation Five. (PSX, PSONE, PS2, PSTwo, and PS5) I thought over it and thought, "When is the PS5 coming out," so, I bought the PSTwo. I'm glad I did.
73 NO more hard drive!
Sony deletes the functionality of the hard drive upgrade and calls this an improved design. I beg to differ!
Find the original full sized model unless you plan on putting this in your car or live in a very small box or van "down by the river!"
74 Way better than the original
I just got a ps2 when they came out with the slim
design. I decided to get it since it looked so cool,
I havnt had a ps2 yet and there are so many great
games for it, and was getting kinda bored with the
gamecube. Man is this thing small! its so great!
I bought the gta double pack since ive honestly
never played the games and there great! playing
them on this small system is so fun! i bought
lots of Greatest Hits games for this system, like
max payne, gta double pack, devil may cry 2,
kingdom hearts and a few more. This is like
the best system! I own a gamecube and had an xbox,
Gamecube is great and all but Is lagging on any
great games right now, and the xbox....
ive had so much problems with it...
its broken so many times! so many errors! the xbox
is just a crummy machine and is so huge!
Get the new ps2 you wont be dissapointed!
75 Smaller is better
The new design on the PS2 is a great improvement - particularly the top load. Buttons can be a bit difficult to hit without a careful inspection, but the stationary top-loader prevents some of the problems with the original's tray design. It's small enough to store easily, and I like it a lot more than I did my original.
76 a nice system
this console is fun, educational, durable, and something that will have you playing for hours and hours of fun!
77 playstation 2
I wish I could write a review for the Playstation 2!! However, I bought and paid for one on amazon on December 16th from PRINCESSJESS20901 and never received it!!! She picked up the money from Western Union within minutes but failed to send the product. All I can say is BEWARE!! DO NOT BUY FROM PRINCESSJESS2. She is a thief that had no intentions of ever sending the Playstation 2!!!!
78 Over priced???!!!!!!
No stars (but I cant wright a review unless I post one)

You can buy the same system at chips and bits for about 175$! Including shipping and tax!! tell your frinds!!!
79 Another review (Kid Review)
I was so happy when I opened up my PS2 box on Xmas morning. I set it up right away an I was immedently hooked. My friend has an older (big) PS2 and when he came over and saw how small it was he was amazed. I really like the design of this system and it's ability to play games/audio cd's/ DVD's. I read alot of other reviews on this new PS2 and it does NOT overheat or have "Disc read errors". Just make sure that a lot of air cancirculate around it and dont use it in a closed cabnet. The integrated internet adapter is a plus. On the downside, I wish sony could have kept the main power switch on the backside or put one on the power adapter so you would not have to unplug it to completly turn it off. I do feel sorry about you Fianal Fantasy players who need that HDD. Sony could make a USB HDD but I dont know the posibility of that. One more thing, If your TV has Component Video Inputs...Get the Component Video Cable! The picture looks a lot better then with just the standard cable. In short I think that Sony did a good job on the new PS2.
Thank you for reading!

80 Over-Rated?
I bought the new ps2, San Andreas and a memory card. I get compliments from EVERYONE on this slim shady. It is kind of over priced but you can watch ANY DVD; just type in the code 1111 when it asks you to decode sensitive material. It makes you look smart. It did say "Disc Reading Error" during San Andreas probably because the CD was new. No big deal. I am finished with San Andreas storyline now. Also, it did say "Corrupt Data" after I played, for a day, on Burnout 3. But I just started playing when the memory corrupted. The graphics on both Burnout 3 and San Andreas were spectacular & EVERYONE was absolutely amazed at the technology. I am planning to buy Snake Eater, Midnight Club 3, & GT4.
81 ps2(new design) over priced!
People are selling new PS2 over priced!!!! It only cost $150 in the store, and it's over $200 online!!!! What are you people smoking!!!!!!!?

Note: No one is going to buy ps2 for over $200, only dumb people would buy for over $200, smart people would only buy for $150, you people will never make buisness like this.
82 Excelente consola
Primero,
83 Nice.
!Heather's Teenage Son!

Well, all I had before this thing was a Nintendo 64. I wanted a newer gaming console. So, I put this on my Christmas list. I was quite excited when I opened the box to find a PS2 in it. It's smaller than all my friend's, cuz I got the newer design. I can't really tell a difference between the original and this one except for the size and that it loads from the top instead. This thing plays DVD's, DVD-R's and CD's along with PS2 games and I'm quite glad. I'm also happy with the four games I got. Get this system. It's awesome!
84 ok, but not better than bigger ps2
first of i will write this very proffesionally and i have owned or played every game system since the pong days.now lets get to the point this system has the same gameplay ans the original ps2 but the smaller weight size gives the worst thing that sony could ever do they made it extremely fragile so it would probably cost you more if the older model broke.but if your into the stylish look this is for you and you cannot get a old ps2 unless it is used because sony is only making slim ones but sorry you cannot get the better one (older).
85 SMART,SLIM DESIGN. 27th dec 2004.
I have heard that alot of people have wanted one of these but they don't make enough of them. Some people might think that it looks fairly horrible, wrong! i thought the slim design is better for a much smarter look and great for less space. Twice as small as the original and cheaper in some cases than the bulky. This really does look nice out of the box so smart and dosen't look anything like a games console. If you are thinking about buying one, buy the slim design, you won't be dissapointed when you see it out of the box.
86 Great new PS2
This new and redesigned ps2 is awesome. It has the great features of the first ps2 but it is extremely smaller and has a built in internet modem/ethernet port thing. trust me, it is really tiny and easy to transport. I got GTA San Andreas with it so far and it is so cool. Anyway, if you are thinking about getting the slim ps2 I strongly suggest that you do, you won't regret it. Below I have listed pros and a couple of cons:

Pros:
1. Very small and lightweight
2. More games than xbox and gamecube, possibly more games than xbox and gamecube combined
3.excellent graphics
4. Disc holder can be opened with system turned off
5. DVD player

Cons:
1. In order to use multiplayer, you have to buy a multitap adapter which costs about $20-$25
2. No built in memory like xbox
3. No Halo games
87 Sony is evil...
First they intentionally bleed the supply lines of the old PS2 early in the year, than intentionally under-produce the new version in order to "stimulate demand for the product." I have never seen a company so disloyal to its customers than Sony has for 2004. The "demand" for this product is largely from current PS2 owners who only want a replacement for their junky old broken PS2 that Sony won't fix! "Disc Read Error" ring a bell? There is a well known problem that the laser eyes in the PS2's were not calibrated properly. Over time, they become misaligned and wont read discs...hence the disc read errors. OF course, it takes such a long time for the problem to worsen that by then most of your PS2's are out of the 90 day warranty. As an employee of a major retailer I cant tell you how many people come in or call with broken PS2's and the horror stories about Sony's customer support. Also, as such an employee I have had many conversation with the Sony representative that visits our store...and let me tell you that I was told that all of the PS2 shortages were deliberately planned, and you heard it here first that this will happen when the PSP is launched in March. I had a good mind to tell Mr. Sony off, instead I will steer people away from their products in our store. I have never seen a company so determined to play mind games and so willing to go to great lengths in order to mess with their most loyal customers and cheat them out of money and time. But the reason they have to do it is that they are losing sales to Microsoft everyday, and because their system is the weakest and least capable of all the current consoles. Say what you want about Nintendo's (and even Microsoft's) systems, their support is top notch and they dont play games. Boycott Sony and their evil ways, and go elsewhere for your gaming needs.
88 The Incredible Shrinking PS2
The new, slim design of the PS2 is great! It just blends in with all the other A/V components around my TV. It isn't much larger then the cases that hold Playstation games.

The only thing I don't like about the new design is the top-load disc player. The design is better, no motorized drawer jams to worry about, but the part that opens and closes feels really flimsy. Not a good feel for the part that gets the most use.

89 Sony Sucks!
I bought the Playstation 2 when it first came out. I paid $300 only to find out you had buy a stupid little memory card to store games. By then, it was too late. I had left it on over night in order to save my place in a game and the next day, it would not work. A few months later I bought another and paid only $250 for it, but I sold it after a while because the graphics were so bad. This machine is a piece of junk. It's only 300 mhz. There haven't been computers out there that slow for over ten years! It's probably good enough for a kid, but I have paid thousands of dollars for a high-def widescreen tv and this thing won't play any games in high-def, not even 480p. By contrast, all of X-Box's games play in at least 480p, and many in 720p. Plus, the X-Box has a hard-drive, which you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for ('cause it's free). If you're just a kid, get this piece of junk, but if you want to play with the big boys, get the X-Box. Oh, I forgot, this new system allows you watch movies in 480p. Finally! Big deal. I've been doing this with the X-Box for the last four years! As fat as the reduction in size. It don't matter. The hardware inside the box is still junk! That's probably why they were able to reduce its size by 75%. There's hardly anything inside. Sony has been making money the past five years by selling air to all the air-heads out there! If you want to buy a Sony product, wait until the PSP or the PS3 come out. These will be truly cutting edge machines. As for this generation, at least as far as hardware is concerned, the X-Box is the winner. Nintendo is just a joke. And their Nintendo DS sucks big time too. Now, instead of just one tiny screen to play crappy games on, you get two! Wow, big deal.
90 Completely Pointless
[...] First of all, this smaller version ps2 is pointless. The original ps2 wasn't that heavy anyway. Xbox is the heaviest, then the original ps2, and the lightest-gamecube. This "quieter" version of the ps2 is also pointless. Its not like the fan of the first and second generation ps2's drowned out the noise of your tv. This has got to be sony's worst invention ever. I mean, come on, this new version doesn't even have a hard disk drive so you can't play final fantasy. That sucks. Plus, You can't use old memory cards on this thing. Plus, the fan of this thing is so small ist is almost impossible to think that this thing is more capable of not doing disk read erorrs. There are a bunch of other negative things I could say about this piece of crap, but I don't want to seem bitter. So, for any parents reading this review, don't buy this for your kids. You will really dissapoint them. And for you kids, don't even bother asking for this junk for christmas. There are plenty of other options out there. There is Xbox, Gamecube, the second generations of the ps2 (yes, it is still more expensive than this one, but I think it is money well spent), Nintendo ds, and you can still buy gba sp's (even though they are outdated because of the ds's release). So bottom line, don't waste 150 big ones, and just buy something else.
91 Not as good as Xbox
The new design for playstation 2 is really nice because now it's extremely thin and light weight. i bought the older version of ps2 in 2001 and i think that it is just as cool as the new one though. the older one is cooler in some ways because the cd-rom drive comes out of the system unlike gamecubes which opens up. the new ps2 is like gamecube's version. the newer one is nothing compared to the older version and both are nothing compared to xbox. gta: san andreas is a good game but who can refuse to play halo 2? GO MICROSOFT!
92 Many nice improvements
The toploading gets rid of a ton of issues that some monkeys had (breaking their sliding trays). The small form makes it much more easy to travel with (I travel a lot and now don't have to worry so much about the space it takes up). I don't care for the harddrive nor for excessive multiplayer gaming (4 people), or even for networking, so this little machine is perfect for me. No real improvement to graphics or anything like that, but that wasn't what the thing was supposed to do. If there is one niggling complaint, it would be that the system SHOULD have been $99. If you have a PS2 (even the better versions that still played all the PS1 stuff that was worth hanging on to), then definitely get this, but wait for the price drop.
93 Playstation 2 New Design Review
Yes, I rated it a three because of these reasons.
I have every game system since the 70's. Now the old PS2 was a great investment. The education value is quite low for any system, except the computer (PC). The Playstation 2 Old Design was more durable than the New Design that they created. The fun vaule is a five, because it has a wide varity of games, plus the range of graphical value. The reason why it is a bad system is because it is not compatible with the Playstation 2 harddrive. Which allows you to download maps/info/knowledge from online games. Final Fantasy XI, Socom, Socom II, and other online games are pretty useless if you have no harddrive to download the assesories for the game. The Old Design Playstation 2 is the best out of the two choices. Yes, when it first came into play in November 15, 2000; there was a bug that could not play Playstation One Games. In 2001 they re-designed it so it could play them without a hassel. So That is my rating and reason why. Thank you, from Lunar!
94 Mostly improved on the original
Commentary about which console system is better aside, this new PS2 is generaly an improvement compared to the old style systems. I have both, and I picked up the small unit because I heard it was quieter. It is, and to the point where I would actually consider using it to watch DVDs. The old models were audible in quiet scenes to the point of annoyance. The DVD playback picture quality is better too. The unit does have it's downsides though. The flip top makes vertical usage impractical, and the power and eject buttons are more difficult to operate in the dark. Through 80 hours of playing GTA: San Andreas I didn't have any overheating or game lockup problems that are rumored but never confirmed. If you want a PS2 and you don't need the HDD, I'd say that this is the PS2 for you.
95 this isn't about brand wars
I am tired of this brand wars bickering.

This playstation 2 is the perfect solution to a gamer who either does not own one yet and wants the wide title range that Sony has to offer, or it is for people like myself who played their PSX2 to the point where the drivers stopped working.

It doesn't overheat. It's small. It's quiet. It works.

It allows me to play all my favorite psx1 & psx2 games. If I wanted to play xbox games, obviously I would own an xbox too (which I do). That isn't the issue here. Who cares about the xbox if all you want to do is play some classic Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, or Final Fantasy games? Not to mention San Andreas....

So please don't listen to this stupid brand war. If you want a new playstation 2 that works, get this new beau.
96 PS2 Slim is Awesome!!!
First of all, i dont know what that person was talking when he said that, "Gamecube is the best", first, Gamecube doesnt even play cd, dvds and it mostly has corny kid's games. It is a child-based game system between ages(3-13). PS2 is the best because of it's retail value and the fact that it has more games than XBOX and Gamecube and they also have much more discounted games than either of those systems. There are so many games to choose from when using PS2. Yes, the PS2 doesn't have as good as graphics as the XBOX but at least you dont need a remote control to play your dvds or cds, just use the paddle for PS2. Besides, Sony in general is the best name brand of the three. Microsoft is not noted for making good hardware products, their networking essentials do not work well at all. When XBOX first came out it had major issues of over-heating and in some instances I heard that some actually caught fire. I think Microsoft caught on to that and fixed the problem some-what. I work in retail for Circuit City and Gamecubes hradly sell at all, we never run out of it and it always seems that we run out of PS2's every single week. Overall PS2 is the Number-One game system out there right now.
97 System bashers are stupid
I have been a gamer for as log as I remember. My first system I can remember playing was Sega Genises. After mine broke, I got a Playstation. I loved it. Two years later I got a N64 which i loved too. For me i liked and played PS1 more than N64, probably because of Grand Tourismo. One year after it came out i got a PS2. A year after that my two best friends got gamecubes. I always thought it was horrible campared to PS2. And I hated XBOX even more. Those were my console bashing days. Two years afrter I got PS2, i got a Gamecube for my birthday. Thats when I realized you can't bash a console unless you played it. Shortly after my birthday i got a XBOX. At that time I played it the most. Now I'm getting less attatched to PS2 and I just got Metroid Prime 2 which I play all the time. Now that I look back I found that I hated XBOX and the 'cube were because I couldn't afford them. Now I got all of the systems I like to play them all. Now let me get to the PS2 reveiw. Nothing is really different exept a built in network adapter and no HDD. I think this was a bad idea. Sony should have already had a built in network adapter and HDD. I still think the standing upright thing is stupid. All of my systems are laying down on shelves. The smaller system doesn't really matter exebt the fact it can fit on a smaller shelf. I think sony should have just trashed this idea and spent the money on making PS3 the console God. But, that's just my opinion...
98 Let's review THIS version of the PS2, SHALL WE?
Everyone keeps reviewing PS2 in general, and it's completely irrelevant. This is a NEW version. So let me review the one I got.

This is the new smaller design, a little bigger than a DVD case. While it may look cool, it is NOT recommended. The only pro is how cool it looks.

The CONS:
Will accept PS1 Memory cards and old PS2 Memory cards BUT will not let you use them until you reformat them. This means if you wanted to continue that game you had saved on there, DON'T COUNT ON IT.

The door for the game tray is a flip up instead of a drawer. You'd think they'd have learned not to go back to this since their last design failed so frequently with this function.

The only reason you should get this Playstation is if:
A - You have never owned a Playstation before
B - You have no friends that own Playstations (so you won't have to worry about bringing games over eachothers places, or showing your pal where you are on the game via his Playstation)
C - You don't intend on playing your old games on the new system, in any way shape or form. (Except by starting at the beginning and replaying the game all over again).

Maybe I seem a little bitter, but my main grudge is that I just got home from playing a game I started at a friends house, put 4 hours of work into, then brought home. Then I popped the memory card in, played for another 4 hours (all the while, saving and having the playstation tell me it saved successfully).. when I realized that the game I was "overwriting" was actually the same game over and over. It never overwrote anything. So now, when I turn off my playstation, there goes 4 hours of work.

And what happens when I put in the NEW PS2 Formatted Memory card to see if I can save on that? oh HELL NO. Ofcourse not, it won't even recognize the memory card while the game is still in.

Thanks a lot Playstation. Atleast if my new XBox screws up, I can save it to the hard drive. Jerks.
99 Cute , But Heats up Fast & Long..
It almost melts your games if you play over an hour! Maybe I got a "refurbished" sold as brand new from EB Games, I dunno, mine worries me while i'm playing it! Kinda sorry I sold my old ps2...
100 Final Fantasy XI/Hardrive
Playstation 2 is a nice system more slime design and all the other stuff that comes with it. The problem is for people who has the old system and have the Hard Drive for it to save games on and play final fantasy XI but with the new design there is no place to put the harddrive now why is the reason for that is it because sony doesnt want a hardrive anymore. Well who knows other than that it is a nice system.

Quote of the Day:

If you can't understand it, it is intuitively obvious.

Q: Why don't Scotsmen ever have coffee the way they like it?
A: Well, they like it with two lumps of sugar. If they drink
it at home, they only take one, and if they drink it while
visiting, they always take three.
