ELIZABETH HOLLINGER | JAMES RATKOS | Elizabeth M. Hollinger | James M. Ratkos
1 A book deserving 4.25 stars
I think this is a great book. What this book contains:
A sealed section (w/ MAIJOR SPOILERS)
A thorough walkthrough.
Answers to the game's hard puzzles.
Maps of every city, route, ect.
SOME of the new pokemons' evolutions, moves, ect.
Items in the game and their purposes.
EVERY SINGLE move in the game, all of the TMs & HMs & their locations.
Help on catching Suicune, Raiku, & Entei
Trainers, their Pokemon & levels, ect.
Details on Mystery Gift.
AND MUCH MORE!
What this book DOESN'T have:
A complete Pokedex
Not TOO MANY spoilers
And all of the unnessisary details
2 Learn about a game before writing a book
Maybe authors should learn about a game before writing a strategy guide, that would certainly be a good idea. The people who wrote this knew nothing about the game. The section on happiness was absolutely stupid, most of the things listed there do not raise or lower happiness. They have proven they do not know anything about the mathematic values of the game, readily available through reverse engineering of a rom. The exact damage formula is not included (not that they would even know what it was), stat experience, what stat boosters REALLY do, etc.
3 Good but they left out something!
This guide has almost everything you need to know. It has maps of the areas, what pokemon are located on each route, what each pokemon attack does, and much more. ( They also have a great cheat section. ) The only thing they didn't do very well was put the pokemon names with their attacks under them. The pokemon weren't all in one place. They were spread around the book in not any order! This makes them hard to find. Also the didn't include all the pokemon! Still, I think you should get this guide! The game is very hard without it. Also isn't it better to have a guide that is ok than no guide at all? ( I don't think there are any other Pokemon Gold and Silver guides. )
4 Almost a perfect Prima Guide...
but only almost. This good book to get through the game quickly. As far as finding PokŽmon or finding out what they learn at each level (PokŽdex info), it only shows PokŽdex info on a few of the new PokŽmon. The maps of the areas, towns and caves are done really well, as they also show you all the items that can be foundas well as (most) PokŽmon listed by whether they appear in the morning, day or night. The charts on the trainers/gym leaders are also well done. The sealed section in the back is useful, if you really get stuck or need a hint. If you prefer more information (i.e. PokŽdex, etc...) I recommend the 'Versus Books Official PokŽmon Gold & Silver Perfect Guide (Collectors Edition)'.
5 Good guide! Helped me a lot!
I think this guide is pretty good! The only thing I don't like is that it seems incomplete with no Pokedex but I don't really use the Pokedex anyway so... You pretty much need a strategy guide if you are seriously thinking about completing the game. I don't think I could have done it without, the game is very hard and I was frequently stuck. I would get this guide because it helps in the places where a lot of people need help! Don't worry about the missing Pokedex. Also, the maps help a lot since you can see where you're going. Use them!
6 A pretty good guide
Missing a few baby pokemon pictures, needs to tell about all the pokemon in an area, not just some. But the maps are helpful, and the information is accurate. I would have been lost in Tin Tower getting Ho-oh if it wasn't for this book! A good guide compared to Nintendo's guide. I'm going to get the Pokedex too.
7 What I think!
I think that this guide is al'right because its maps are excellent and the bits were it tells you about the gym leader and what level pokemon he/she has is cool.
The only bad thing is that it doesn't give mich info on the pokemon or where to find them and it doesn't have a pokedex.
If you want something that tells the basic stuff and doesn't cost much i recommend this one.
8 A good guide, not perfect, but worth having!
I got my kids two strategy guides when Pokemon Gold & Silver came out, this one and the "official" Nintendo one. Of the two, this one has gotten MUCH more use. My daughters have marked lots of areas with PostIt flags, the pages are dog-eared, the back is getting ripped, you know they use it!
I realize the previous reviewers noted some minor problems with this guide, but all in all they're just that, minor. No, this guide does not have a built-in Pokedex, they published it before they had the info put together for the Pokedex, and I'm fine with that (see my review of the new Pokedex here on Amazon, it's well worth having too!). And yes, there are some typos, but that's not a big deal.
There is a lot to love about this guide. It has comparison charts for the various types of Pokemon, so you know which type to use when battling. There are pages and pages on everything from TMs to HMs, Berries to Apricorns, the various Pokeball types to the new Mystery Gift items. There's an in-depth section on breeding Pokemon, as well as the newest ways to evolve them (stones versus the happiness factor). There's a great quick and dirty path through the game, which you can check to make sure you didn't miss anything. And best of all, there's a special "sealed" section in the back with spoiler info which you can open or not, depending on whether you're an adult (yes, I know you grownups out there play this game!) or a 6 year-old who needs help through the Tin Tower.
All in all this guide is well worth the money, and if you've got more than one kid playing these games, I'd advise you to get two, to spare yourselves the fighting over it. Don't hesitate, buy it!
9 Packed with info, maps, hints, tips...
Not sure what the other reviewers are annoyed about, but you MUST get this.
It's well written and easy to understand, with GREAT maps that are really clear. Without these maps you migh tfind yourself bumbling aroudn the cities and forests forever.
The guide also gives you th einside scoop on gym leaders, elite four, which pokemon to use when, etc. There is NO WAY you can know all this info without the book.
If you consider not knowing where to find all the different Pokemon a drawback, then you are missing the point. It is a STRATEGY guide, not a TELL-ALL book! You need to be able to do some of this stuff yourself. Trust me, if you are told this info, there is no point in playing the game - NO surprises left.
Get this book, you'll be glad you did!
10 where's the pokedex
This is a helpful book if you don't want pokemon information. The Red and Blue Guide does have pokemon info.
11 Not a bad guide but - no Pokedex?
I have mixed feelings about this Strategy Guide, which I bought as a companion book to Pokemon Gold on the Game Boy. Generally, I think it`s well written and easy to understand, with superb maps which clearly tell you where items are and how to get around in the different cities (which I found really useful, as I`m not very good at navigation in RPGs). It also tells you about the different Gym Leaders and the Elite Four, and what the best Pokemon to use against them are. There is a section on how to breed Pokemon too, plus charts telling you what Pokemon are found in certain areas during the morning, daytime and nighttime and the stages of evolution for a few new Pokemon.
Unfortunately, this book doesn`t really go into detail about where different Pokemon can be found and how to complete your Pokedex. It seems this book was intended just as a walkthrough to help you complete the game quickly, which kind of spoils your fun. If you want help with filling up your Pokedex properly, you have to buy another Prima book, which is advertised in the back.
Overall I`d recommend this book if you`re a novice at the Pokemon games, because the maps and walkthroughs are very good. But sadly, the lack of a proper Pokedex stops the book from being excellent.
12 The perfect pokemon guide
Pokedex,Maps,Hints,THE PERFECT GUIDE!
13 Just Not Enough!
This is an ok book if you are just speeding through the game very quickly. But it wouldn't help much if you want to capture pokemon or breed them or whatever. It would have been better if it includes a pokedex on the back with stats and evolution. But overall it's okay. It has really nice maps of different towns and cities and caves, etc. It also shows you all the items that can be found in different areas and also pokemon that will appear in the morning, day and nighttime. It kind of show you a little pokedex of one or two pokemon that is new. There are also charts on the trainers that you will be battling and their pokemon as well. Also the book shows you the different gym leaders and their pokemon with all their moves and also which types of pokemon will take effect. On the back, there is a sealed section that tells you more secret on capturing rarer pokemon and other stuff. It also shows you different types of balls and which seeds it is made from. The only bad thing is that it doesn't tell you where to go next, like what you do after this or that, they just show you the whole city on the same page. This would be a lot better if it's more detailed with the pokedex so you will know when the pokemon will evolve and other stuff.
14 Prima as dumb as Nintendo's
This book was a disaponitment. No checklist, no pokedex, and they say NEW pokemon MAY BE HERE. The maps are good and walkthrough is ok. But Nintendo's players guide was even worse. oh well
15 This is an awesome book!
I love this book because it is great with its detailed maps of every area and whereabout lists of all items and Tms and Hms. I don't like the fact that it has no complete Pokedex in the back for all the Pokemon including the original 150 along with all the new ones. For Christmas, this was my next best present after the WWF Inferno Match and Buried Alive wrestling rings. I got it along with Pokemon Gold AND Pokemon Silver. This was sure a great present and it helped me so much that it got me all the way to Goldenrod City from Violet City.
16 Half a guide
Unlike Prima's last guide to pokemon (for red, blue, and yellow) which included a complete and detalied pokedex in the back, this book does not. A few of the new pokemon are explained, but not nearly all 250. If you want this guide, you must buy it seperate, and it is really hard to find. The walkthrough part of the guide is complete and very detailed, but the lask of the very useful pokedex ruins the guide.
17 Prima's Gold/Silver Strategy Guide
This strategy for Pokemon Gold and Silver is very accurate and thorough. The maps are impeccable and are extremely succorable (helpful) when you are searching for the hard to find Pokemon such as Lugia. Also, when your trying to exit a cantankerous cave, this guide will really get you of its "toughspots". Overall, this is a veritable Pokemon guide if you are stuck in this game.
18 some faults but still a good guide
Have being considering for quite some time whether to buy the Brady Games strategy guide instead, due to the attractive shiny Gold/Silver cover ... heard it may be a collector item too.
However, finally decided to pick the Prima one. Reason? ... it is more informative and easy-to-understand after flipping through both the guides.
No doubt, unlike the previous Red/Blue/Yellow guides, Prima fails to consolidate the Pokedex at the back of the book to give a clear-cut listing this time round. Neither does it have a checklist for one to keep track of the Pokemons captured. The Pokedex is actually found throughout the book, making it difficult to refer as and when requires! This feature is similar for the Brady Games one too.
Personally, I like the tables found inside this book. They make it easier to understand certain concepts, eg. there are tables showing the evolution examples (Eevee + Fire Stone = Flareon), breeding examples (Male Pikachu + Female Pikachu = Pichu), and so on.
Moreover, when discussing about an area (eg. Route 30), there is always a table showing the wild pokemons that would appear there at different time of a day (Morning, Day, Nite). This feature does not seem to be found in the Brady Games guide when I glanced through.
Like always, there is a 2-pages rough outlines of what one needs to accomplish at different places and an overview map, serving as quick start tools.
So far the book has being helpful in leading me through the journey, and I am on my way to complete the game.
19 Ok, whats the deal with the pokedex?
Its ok if all your looking for is a way through the basic gym game but if your some one who enjoys the colecting part of the game this guide is a real rip off. Prima you are sorry for seperating the pokedex from the guide and selling it seperatly.

21 Where's The Pokedex?! But heres some help!!
Now Im a big Poke Fanatic and I have seen past guide books and the one feature that makes it great is a pokedex. WHY DOESN'T THIS BOOK HAVE ONE?!?!?! But I noticed that theres an ad in this that shows a POKEMON COOMPLETE POKEDEX!!! I have looked for it everywhere and I can't find it. If you are looking for a pokedex go to http://www.pokemoninfodex.com/ its the best online pokedex. Make sure to check it out.
22 No negative star ratings?
To the Poke freak (like myself) who wants a good reliable guide, ... The maps are large, detailed, etc. but the notes and arrows obscure waaaaay too much. There are tons of trainer info, but do you REALLY want to know what guy will send out Machop level 15 followed by an Onix and so on and so on. Wild poke data is all but nonexistant, and there is no... list of pokemon. The most complete section describes each gym leaders' pokemon's type, level and moves.
23 Helpful.. but could be better
The book is useful for a beginner. But, more complete info (like a Pokedex) would have gone a long way. There are better websites than this book, if you're looking for g/s tips...
24 This guide is..well.......alright
I think this guide is alright by telling me where to go but... This guide lacks the info. about the Pokemon. The name of the game is Pokemon, you beat the game with Pokemon. I think that just a guide with the Pokedex showing the moves, evolutions, ect. would be a good guide for me, I bought the guide for that reason, and it was there...
25 Poorly Done to me
I have finshed scanning this guideline for the game and it is a little poorly done.i was so messed up where I was trying to get to next city in Sliver where i have reveiwed. If you do buy it then the money that you have spent is wasted. The text is not writen well.I gave it two starts because the phtos are nice and because a litle was good. The text can be written better but they are other guidelines which I have reveiwed.
26 Lack of Pokedex VERY FRUSTRATING
I was disappointed in this guide, due to the lack of detailed strategy. Also, it seemed to gloss over a few of the important areas and treat them like they didn't even exist.
It seemed as though the authors quickly wrote it, without verifying strategy and concepts that they described. I expected much more specific and accurate strategy from an official strategy guide. It sure wasn't worth the money in my opinion.
If you're really into the game, this "guide" will leave you extremely disappointed. I have used Prima's other Pokemon guides and loved them. As a result, I didn't even look through this one before I bought it. I wish I had. If I had known that it didn't even have a pokedex I wouldn't have wasted my money on it. The "guide" part isn't that great either. It leaves you guessing on many, many points and is just really confusing. I'm sure there are better guides out there somewhere.
27 Pretty good book but one exception.
It is a very good strategy guide but with one exception. It didn't have a list of all the new Pokemon. I bought it because I thought it listed all the new Pokemon and their stats. There is another book out that is the Pokemon Complete Pokedex which I can't find anywhere. This book is okay though if you are intersted in the game only and that's it.
28 Prima Pokemon Gold and Silver looses luster
This guide is not like the past Prima books. It is missing crucial information especially on Pokemon. Will there be another version coming. Let's hope so. If there is a Pokedex available by prima I'd invest in it instead of the guide.
The reason I rate this book three stars is because it walks you through, but in the order of trail...not in the order of how you should go. So you will be doing al lot of skipping around in the book to find where you are at. Do we want more. I think the answer is an emphatic yes.
29 A HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT
Okay, maybe the maps are great...but who's the dork who decided to put all the Pokedex information in a separate book?? I should have checked this book out more carefully before buying it...I'm sure there are others out there that do a COMPREHENSIVE job in one volume!!
30 Room for Improvements
Although there are plenty of details necessary for winning the game, this new guide for the Pokemon Gold/Silver games is lacking in a few areas.
First and foremost is the detailed Pokedex information (that which lists all 251 Pokemon, what attacks they earn at each level, when they evolve, etc.). There is a little bit of this sprinkled in for some of the new Pokemon in the guide pages, but not nearly as detailed as they have done for past versions of the game. I understand that all of this information will be detailed in a companion guide - I don't have a problem with that given how much stuff Prima already had to cover in this new guide; it would have made more sense for the Pokedex companion guide to have been available at the same time.
Second, the info on what Pokemon are available in each area is not always 100% accurate (I've had many surprises show up for battles). This could have been researched a bit more thoroughly.
One positive though was the idea to "seal" the hard challenge puzzle answers in the back of the book. This way one can casually read the rest of the book and not get completely spoiled for some of the games more interesting challenges. This was a good thing.
31 Good but not complete.
I have to admit that I should have looked at this book longer in the store when I was buying it. If your goal is to get though the game, it's a great guide. But it's lack of a pokedex listing was enough to send me steaming back to the stores the next day. Haveing this info in another book is a lothsome greedy thing, I know I would have happly paid a higher price for a book that had this info. Crime, I paid a higher price by picking this one over the NPower book. Anyhow, tis a good book, but just not complete.
PS. No one else seams to know where this Complete Pokedex book is around here either. Did not make the day.
32 Not bad
THis hint guide is really good, but the fact that they don't mark which trainer is which is confusing. Not only that but they don't show all the evolutions of the pokemon you catch. Just the biggining form. Meaning you have to buy a diffrent book to get the stats you need. Other then that not too bad.
33 A Big Disappointment
This book does NOT measure up to previous Prima guide standards. The only reason I gave it two stars at all is because the maps are good. If you're looking for a book to help you find the new Pokemon and complete your Pokedex, this is no help. Unlike Prima's previous strategy guides, there is no appendix in the back telling evolution requirements, listing moves, or stating locations. There's not even a checklist for the pokemon! It seems that they tried to print this book before thouroughly researching it, because in some places where a new pokemon is being discussed, there is a big question mark where the picture should be.(No, not on the legendary ones, on ones I saw pictures of on the internet months ago.) In some route descriptions there are no new pokemon listed as being found there, but there's a small note that says there MAY be new pokemon there, like they're not sure. On one of the last pages there's an advertisement for a separate Prima guide, the Pokedex. In the Red/Blue/Yellow books this feature was included. One less important carelessness, there are frequent spelling/grammatical errors throughout the book. In conclusion, if you want a good Pokemon guide, save your money and look elsewhere.
34 prima's guide to pokemon silver/gold

Also it will tell you where to find a TM or item. And it will say witch people you can get a phone number of.
