ELIZABETH HOLLINGER
1 Almost perfect, but not quite...
First things first, I've never had one of these myself, so I can't give a very detailed description. But someone I know has one, so I still know enough to be worthwhile.
This guide is very helpful. It gives you the location of all the legendary pokŽmon and a game walk through. Personally, I prefer the pokŽdex section. It gives you information concerning the pokŽmon, their evolution and their moves. (which is quite handy when deciding if to let a pokŽmon evolve or not!)
There is one downside. The publisher omitted to put in pokŽmon from previous games if their move sets had not been changed. (So it's a little annoying when you're training a pokŽmon such as vulpix!) But every thing else makes up for that omission. In short, this is great!
2 RUBY AND SAPPHIRE GUIDE
THE REASON I RATE THIS GAME GUIDE A 5 IS THAT IT HELPED ME GET REGICE, REGSTEEL, AND REGIROCK AND REYQAZA THE STRONG POKEMON ALSO IT TELLS ME HOW TO DO ALOT. CAUSE OF IT I GOT RAQAZA TO LEVEL 97 AND BLAZKEN TO LEVEL 100 BUT HAVEN'T QUIT CAPTUERED LATIOS CAUSE HE KEEPS ON FLEAING BATTLE. ALSO ANOTHER THING NOT COOL IS THAT RAYQAZA CANT ENTER BATTLE TOWER LEVEL 100. SO THEY NEED TO MAKE A FEW ADJUSTMENTS
3 Very good and detailed...
Cons:
-Fully detailed maps that tell where trainers are, which trainers will be added to your Trainer's Eye, items, and sometimes a number. When you see a number on the map, there will be another number somewhere on the page that tells you what to do there (or what happens, etc.)
-Tells where to find items,tm's and hm's,rare and common pokemon, how and when pokemon evolve, the abilities, attack and tm and hm moves they can learn, as well as "egg moves".
-Complete walkthrough of the game, as well as little side quests such as catching Rayquaza.
-Shows every move's damage, accuracy, pp, and effects, as well as what they do in pokemon contests.
Cons:
-Some ability summaries aren't specific.
(This one might not be a con to some)-It doesn't tell how to catch the Regi pokemon, instead, it just has the braille alphabet to help.
-At first, the part of the guide that shows you when pokemon evolve and when they learn moves MIGHT seem complicated...
Overall:5 stars, it's worth it!
4 If you've bought the game, definitely pick this up!
This was an invaluable resource the times I managed to get stuck in the game, or wanted to know about the different Pokemon types. I managed to get my hands on a small version of this (Measuring approximately 5"x7" instead of the much bigger version). I found that was great to keep in my backpack for my hour between classes (studying??!hahaha). Prima always puts out a quality product, and this was no exception. Buy this over the other guides out there.
5 You'll find it here! Kind of.
This book is a heck of a great stratagy guide, but it's missing a few pointers. First of all, It has no locations of secret bases.
Everybody neeeds a secret base! What the heck! Very few misspells. And misses a whole lot of stuff. When I bought this I thought I would be king of the world! But all I had was stuff that I already knew.
6 I Can Buy The Nintendo Guide?
All the review are said the book is bad!!!
i want to know if i can buy the nintendo power offical guide?
That guide can buy in the pokemon center but it sold out!
the prices in amazon.com are very best but the guide vitiantion the order.
7 Stick with Nintendo
Don't believe what you read about the Prima guide being the only one with a PokŽdex. Nintendo's version of the Ruby/Sapphire strategy guide includes a complete PokŽdex and more information than you can imagine.
Sometimes the Prima guide is better, but if you are getting a game for a Nintendo system, I'd suggest at least looking at their game guide first before even considering any other.
8 Could be better
This book is great, but it could be better. Therer are no directions through the hideout. It does not tell you what attacks do better against the gym leaders, but it does reccomend attack types. It does not have a good map of mirage island. At 15.00, this book is sort of a rip-off. Think before you buy.
9 MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!
Lets get 1 thing clear. You need the Strategy Guide if you even think of getting Poke'mon ruby or sapphire. If you don't you will be soo confused and give up. It will be sitting around the house collecting dust. So get the Strategy Guide and you will have a new favorite game!!
10 Find yourself a better guide
Now for those of you gamers that actually like having all the information and buy a guide for that specific reason don't even consider this one. The only thing this is good for is a list of all of the pokemon. The guide skips around and you'd swear that they made up some of the information, which isn't that far fetched considering the other mistakes. Save some money, and just buy another one.
11 THE BEST!!!!
Ok don't listen to what the other people say abouut this that it is bad, just junk... I love this book!! The best, best, best, best book!!!!!!! I got past the elite four with this. (to bad anymore I lost mine........)
12 Nintendo's is more detailed- but I destroyed my copy
Because of a special deal, I got the Nintendo Player's Guide with my copy of Sapphire. I used that thing so much it's falling apart, so I recently bought Prima's guide. Surprisingly, Prima decided not to include the layout of each individual Trick House (Nintendo did.) Also, the layout of Flannery's gym is not labeled, so it can take awhile just to get to her. Nintendo tells which holes take you to which spot. The maps are small, which does make them hard to use in certain locations. Despite claims, it does not list all secret bases or have opponent trainer rosters (just for gym leaders/rivals.) Prima also fails to note which trainers are Trainer's Eyes trainers who demand rematches, so finding these trainers for rematches is harder- once again, this is something that Nintendo does. Despite all of this, it's still a handy guide to have while exploring the land of Hoenn and trying to beat the gym leaders. I would recommend Nintendo's, but the Nintendo guide could fall apart on you! This is a respectable guide and I would suggest picking it up.
13 This book is bad!
This book doesn't tell how to get to the secret cave and it doesn't tell how to break the secret code. But there are some good things. It has 200 pokemons in its pokedex; it tells how many levels a pokemon will evolve, and like Groudon, when Groudon is at Level 50 it will learn Rest. And this book will tell what HM/TM that a pokemon can learn. It will tell what a pokemon is afraid of or not afraid of and it will tell which type of the pokemon it is.
14 Not a bad Guide at all
There are a few good points about this guide. Of all the Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire guides this is the only one that has a Pokedex. But it still isn't tbe best to choose just because of this.
A few things troubling. THey have some maps and that's good. But they don't locate very many items. Not only that but there are a couple of errors in the Pokedex, which weren't too bad. Mostly with some of the pokemons evolutions but still a good guide nonetheless.
The other big problem was that I'm used to guides telling me what to expect from trainers. Even Nintendo Power would help tell me what trainers would most likely use (i.e. "They mostly use water and grass types"), but this guide didn't do that for me.
Also, they didn't locate the secret bases in any way whatsoever. They had the maps...but where do I find them!? I didn't like that too much. Not only that but no strategies for two on two battles. That could be a bit of a problem. Nonetheless a good guide that is essential to the game in every way. They have a few problems but easily this guide is one of the better ones for Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire.
The good
+Maps
+Nice walkthrough
+There's a Pokedex!
The Bad
-Small tiny errors in the Pokedex
-Doesn't help me locate the secret bases
-Maps are missing item locations
15 An Essential!
Not having a vast variety of player's guides to choose from, I compared this guide to one other, the one offered by Brady Games. The most essential difference that I could notice between the two guides that made me purchase this one by Prima instead is the lack of a Pokedex.
The Pokedex is highly detailed, describing the various strengths and weaknesses of 200 Pokemon (obviously not including all the ones found in the various Pokemon versions, but only the ones found in Ruby/Saphire versions). The Pokedex also describes every move a Pokemon can learn, and at what level it learns the move and what level it evolves to it's higher form. Some of the old favorites such as Geodude and Machop can only evolve to their final form through a link cable with another Pokemon player. Fear not, if you have no buddies around that have the game (or that can admit to having the game), yet you still want to "catch 'em all", you could just focus on catching all the Pokemon specific to your version of the game.
The guide also has a nicely detailed walkthrough, saying what Pokemon can be found in what areas of the game and telling you the easiest method of getting through the basic premise and heading on to battle the Elite Four. It also gives you handy guides on the items and and their prices offered by each town that you pass, so you can just turn to your guide to find the item you need, rather than FLYing from city to city trying to find that specific item.
But wait, there's more! (Sounds like those tv ads, huh?) Well, I thought the guide very handy for Pokemon Contests, as I find the Contest Hall a fun little place to compete in every now and again. You'll also find detailed descriptions of every field move that a Pokemon may use, and also descriptions of how these moves work during Appeal Time in Pokemon Contests.
I can't imagine another guide comparing to the quality of work I've come to trust from Prima. To truly master the game (you'd be surprised how many things are so easy to miss), you need this guide. So what are you waiting for? Click "Add to Shopping Cart!"
16 An awesome guide
This guide is awesome. Not only does it give give you info on how to beat the trainers, it also gives you all the Pokemon in the game, where to find them, and their stats. I request that after you buy Ruby or Shapphire you buy this guide, it helps alot. Maybe even too much!! This a guide for Pokemon starters. It'll make you the Ultimate Pokemon Master in no time at all.
17 Perfect Strategy Guide!
This book really is great! It shows you weaknesses to the Elite Four, and helps you throughout the game. It also shows the Pokemon the Gym trainers have, which will help you figure out what Pokemon you need to bring to the Gym.
18 Very Good, But I Own Better
I actually own the official Nintendo Power one and not the Prima one, but my neighbor/friend owns the Prima one and I read both about equally.
The Prima guide is very good; it has a great pokedex, walkthough, item list, and some other things.
The main reason that I bought the official guide is because I've had a bad past with Prima (i.e. starting a sentance and never finishing it in the whole entire guide). This one only has one mistake that I could find and it isn't very major. The mistake was that they say that Wumple evolves depending on the time of day. This isn't true, because Wurmple's evolution is random.
The back of the book is a bit decieving, but isn't a lie. The back says that the guide gives you the locations of every Secret Base. The guide doesn't point out the secret bases, rather it simply has maps of every location in the game and the maps include the secret bases.
Prima is a very good strategy guide, but I would recommend Nintendo Power's. They're almost equal, but I personally just like Nintendo's layout and wording better.
19 Guide Is A Good Choice, But It Isn't The Best
I do not own the guide, but my friend does. He got through half
the game without the guide. In his words - "The guide is a good choice, but it isn't the best possible." The guide only helps those Pokemon trainers who search for rare Pokemon, and if they are stuck in a part of the game. I say yay, but if you are a pro at most Pokemon games, don't spend the money on the guide.
20 Not the best out there, but still pretty good!
After buying Pokemon Ruby, I went to Best Buy looking for this guide--after hearing nothing but great reviews from amazon.com. After some careful examining, I ended up buying the official Nintendo one--it just has more features and the only thing that it is lacking is trainer rosters, which neither has. I am not saying that this is a bad guide, I am only saying that it is second best. If you want the best, go Nintendo!!
21 It's.. Um.. Great...
The book was very informative but not even comparable to the strategy Guide I had for Pokemon Crystal by Versus Books. Prima's doesn't tell you where each pokemon is in the pokedex (Versus does), doesn't say which item is which on a map (Versus does) and doesn't tell where to find certain berries (WHICH VERSUS DID). Versus Books: PLEASE Come out with a Ruby/Sapphire manual!
22 BEST RUBY & SAPPHIRE GUIDE
Its awsome! It has a full pokedex. all 200 pokemon in the game. Its awesome. I reccomend it to everyone who has Pokemon Ruby and/or Pokemon Sapphire. BUY IT!
23 Not the best guide!
I think that this guide is to crowded and that makes it hard to read but this guide is helpfull and it helped me beat my game. but i did most of it without the guide and if i were you i would get the nintendo one.
24 Good, but they lied
If you want to beat one of the pokemon gem games this is a necessity. They could have incuded more maps for dungons and gyms and such, and definatly should have included maps for the trick house. They don't even have a two on two battle strategy! Also, on the back cover it says they have locations for all the secret bases, but they lied! In the section where they said would have the locations, there is no mention of it. I have searched the book five times for this "missing section", and it does not exist. Truely, if you want an in-depth guide to training, breading, bases, contests, battle strategy, or anything besides maps and a pokedex, it would be wiser just to go to gamefaqs.com, they have 10 walkthroughs and many in-depth guides
25 A much superior product than their first Gold/Silver guide
Prima's previous Pokemon Gold/Silver guide was not their best effort; it was rushed and most of the Pokemon were not even pictured in the book. This Ruby/Sapphire guide more than makes up for their last guide.
The guide takes the time to describe the new features of Ruby and Sapphire, all the new info you need on capturing, types, status problems and evolving, and it even details the differences between the old Gold/Silver features and the new Ruby/Sapphire features; an "In" and "Out" list, e.g. the clock and Pokegear from Gold/Silver compared to the new Pokenav in Ruby/Sapphire. The breeding section is very helpful, but not thorough or detailed enough for those who want to raise pokemon with special egg moves; it is possible with some work, but it will be great if Prima does another book dedicated to breeding and inheriting special moves like their Master Pokedex for Gold/Silver.
The walkthrough is organized quite nicely, and the screen shots are crisp and clear in beautiful full color. The item list takes a different approach; rather than state exactly where each item is, there are "checklists" where you can check off the items you obtain as you find them in that region. I didn't find this too troublesome. Prima has opted not to list each trainer and their bench of pokemon; I am not thrilled with this omission, but the guide is so well put together, I am willing to grudgingly deal with it, I guess the company wanted to provide players with the element of surprise, so make sure you have a diverse or strong team with you at all times. I am however grateful that the pokemon appearances and frequencies are listed, as well as which one appears in which version when applicable, including appearances in the water when fishing or surfing. The gym leaders and their pokemon benches are still detailed, along with very helpful tips on beating them, the badge won and its effect and the TM provided. I also like how each major and minor event or task is numbered, but you can still complete each task in any order you like. I love the pokedex and how straightforward and streamlined it is; everything you need to know from the nature(s) of each pokemon to its evolution(s) and its branches, but they make a mistake on Wurmple's evolution stating that it depends on the time of day. Wurmple's evolution to Silcoon or Cascoon is entirely random.
The best feature of all is the Pokemon Contest, to which the book dedicates its own section. A bit of the information is a little confusing, but carefully read will give you all you need to know, including what berries to mix to make the best pokeblocks and their effects when used. They included the battle moves and contest moves, even the contest move combos! The item list is as complete as anyone could ever want. Overall, this book provides a good balance of information to beat the game without revealing too much. I still would have liked to see the trainer data but Prima's guide will deeply satisfy most players wanting to get the most out of the game. You'll be glad you bought this book!
26 This is THE BEST guide for Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire!
This is the best guide for Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. It reveals weaknesses of all the gym leaders and the Elite Four, and it gives an informational Pokedex with info. on how to catch all the Pokemon. This guide also tells of all the Pokemon located in one area, and all the Pokemon who evlve in strange ways. The only downfall, is that trainers' Pokemon lineup are not revealed and most of the guide shows the girl's adventure, not the boy's. Otherwise, you don't get a better guide than this one. If you get Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire, get this sweet guide also.
27 Amazing strategy guide...
I am someone who rarely writes reviews for any items but for this one I'll make an exception. I got the sapphire pokemon game imported and since I knew little about the new pokemon within the game, I needed a really good strategy guide. Comparing with Marcus' guide, Hollinger will not disappoint! It has complete walkthrough with pictures to help you. A complete pokedex with suggestions (Marcus does not have this!) and separate areas for those wanting to go through contests and building pokeblocks. Overall, this guide is brillant - giving help and aid to the beginner and to the experienced pokemon player. You will NOT be disappointed..an absolute must for any pokemon fan! (comes with a cool poster featuring all the new pokemon!)
28 very informative guide
This guide helps you alot, because it contains all you need about both games, like a colorful and informative guide , an exellent pokedex, now i can find every pokemon i want , It contains all the types of berrys-now i know how they help you and where to find them ,all the secret places- etc .
29 Awesome
Tis is probably one of the best guides for pokemon R/S. It has great directions, tells full in detail about the sidequests, and basically helps trainers get their first pokemon to catching Rayquaza at the sky pillar. In other words, this is the best guide! Get it!
30 A Real "Gem"
So here we are again another two new pokemon games and another new Pokemon Official Guide. In General the guide is VERY well written with nice Colourful pictures and eye catching Colours and Text boxes which will Grab your attention. It guides the player/trainer from start to end very well and includes the side quest as well. If features an in depth section on the pokemon Contests and a Pokedex for the Pokemon which can be caught in Ruby/Sapphire but it is some what lacking. I'm left with the feeling its been rushed to print. For Example there is no Trainer eye section and nothing at all about linking up to battle and no mention of Record mixing at all. Pokemon is all about battling together and this guide lacks that Information. It doesn't have much at all about Secret bases-in fact a guide about where all the Secret bases are and their sizes would have been nice. In Conclusion if you looking for a nice Colourful and bright Guide for your kids then go for it -but for the more Serious Pokemon trainer you will want more, I found myself searching for a fair bit of Information on the Web not contained in the guide. The poster included is a nice touch as well but what happened to the Sealed Section that Prima Guides are so well known for?? Hopefully when the 3rd of the Pokemon Advance Gem games is released a NEWER and more FULLER guide will be made-and for those parents moaning and groaning in the yes there will be a 3rd advance game. Good things always happens in threes didn't you know?
finally can't deicde on Ruby or Sapphire I'd suggest Sapphire cause Lotad Rules as a Grass/Water type with Surf,Giga drain,Icebeam and Facade.
31 this is good
I have this book and sometimes I have a hard time find where to go but other than that it is a great to have to help you in your quest to be a Pokemon Master
GOTTA CATCH EM ALL
Good luck future masters of pokemon
32 Great!
This pokemon guide is good, but not too good, but since there is no compitition, this is the best you can get. This guide fetures a pokedex, some thing very important to have when you are playing, breeding tips, very useful and helpful, and evolution guides.
This is bad because it tells too much, and completly gives away the story, but since there is no compitition, five stars.
33 don't waste money
its not good enough to even waste your money on.
34 Only one worth getting
This strategy guide is the only Ruby and Sapphire guide worth getting (as of 3-24-03). The other "official" guide doesn't even have a pokedex, which is the one thing you need when you are playing pokemon! This one is great. The berries section is a bit confusing, but the pokedex more than makes up for it!
