The RCA RP3755 AM/FM Dual Wake CD Clock Radio offers features that will make your waking and sleeping lives easier and more peaceful than ever. With the RCA RP3755, you can wake or fall asleep to your favorite radio station, your favorite CD, or the smoothing sounds of sea waves, bird song, rain forests, mountain streams or other serene nature sounds included on the bonus CD.

Digital tuning, 11 AM/FM presets, and a high performance system with bass reflex speakers means that your favorite radio station, at high-performance sounds, is just a button away. A motorize CD door system provides for smooth and easy access to your favorite CD. Best of all, the RCA RP3755 runs on a unique ASIC chip, in which three features are combined to make life a little bit easier for you and yours. The Graduwake Ramp-Up Alarm gradually increases the volume of the alarm as you wake up; a "nap" function allows you to take a refreshing cat nap without fear of sleeping all afternoon, and a programmable snooze feature means you can sleep for up to an extra two hours after your alarm initially wakes you up. A large, backlit 1.25-inch display for easy readability rounds out the features of this outstanding CD clock radio.

1 Great radio with lots of features
I just purchased one of these clock radios and really like it. You can put a cd in and wake to the track of the cd you want to hear, plus with the two separate alarms, you can set the second alarm to sound with a ramp up tone in case you wouldn't wake up to the music. Great sound for a compact system. Directions are easy to follow, just read them and program the buttons with ease. Plus it also comes with a nature cd with lots of different sounds such as birds and stream sounds. I am thinking of purchasing a second radio for my other room. It can also be programmed with the nap setting to wake you up after so many minutes, and a sleep setting to let you fall asleep to the radio or cd, then it will turn of after the time you set it. Just press a button and a motorized door opens up to insert cd then closes. Dimmer switch on the back to adjust the brightness of the display. Great little system.
2 Never found one with a working CD player
I was primarily looking for four things in an alarm clock: a CD player, digital AM/FM tuning, battery backup, and an earphone jack. I was thrilled to find this little beauty at my local BJ's Wholesale Club.

I got it home and read the manual cover to cover (I know I'm weird, but it's my way). I programmed in the correct time, alarm settings and radio settings. All was well, I was in love.

Then, I put a CD in....and nothing much happened. A whirring sound as the CD started spinning, then silence as it stopped spinning and the display read "no disc." I thought maybe the disc needed cleaning -- but no fingerprints. I tried multiple discs, but nothing worked. So....

I returned it to the store that day and exchanged it for a new one. And the exact same thing happened! I even called my husband in to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. He fussed with it for a while, read the manual too (he's an engineer, he can't help it) and declared it a piece of junk. I'm very disappointed.
3 Do Not Buy This---Safety Issue
I caution anyone from buying this product. I had it in my baby's room and one night my baby woke up crying. I went to see what was going on, and the room was a little smokey and had the smell of electrical wires burning. I quickly discovered that it was this unit and unplugged it immediately. Luckily it didn't become more serious than that. I have contacted RCA and made them aware of the occurrance but I caution anyone from buying this product.
4 Wake Up to What You Want to Hear
My number one criteria in my search for a clock radio is a digital tuner. If you set a radio station you want to know that you are on that station. Having an analog dial be off slightly may mean you will not hear what you expect or maybe you will hear nothing at all. I am not aware of any other digital tuner clock radio close to this price. This one seems to perform fine. The CD is a good feature, and the unit comes with a CD of interesting sounds. I have been waking lately to mission bells and birds, and it beats the bad news on the radio!

The controls are reasonably straight forward once you get the hang of it. The clock brightness can be lower for night time, although it could be even a little dimmer.

Overall not a bad radio and I got mine at a good price.

5 ANOTHER RCA JUNK UP
I thought I would give RCA another chance so I bought this clock radio and it only lasted for less then two weeks before it went to hell. Now that will be the last RCA product i'll ever own as this product became what RCA products becomes best...ANOTHER RCA JUNK UP!
6 Great Compact System!
I think I got mine about 2 years ago. I love it mainly cuz the dual alarm actually keeps me from oversleeping 95% of the time, but it also has a great sound on it for such a small stereo. I can turn the volume up and hear it clearly throughout my apartment, but it doesn't take up any space at all. I actually came back here because I want to get a second one for my office.
7 Don't buy
This clock is hard to use, hard to shut off and lacks some of the great components of the similar sony dream machine. AND . . . the bright green display will wake you in the night when you roll over and face it. Ridiculous. I absolutely do not like the design, lay out, functionality of this clock. And I'm sure the door on the CD player will break eventually as it has a motorized component to it.
8 Form should follow function.....
Unfortunately, this item wasn't designed with function in mind.

The buttons are too small. Settings are relatively intuitive, but the unit just takes a lot of uncomfortable fiddling to operate. Seems that the designers were primarily interested in making a unit that looks cool... it lacks a dimmer for the overly bright display, has no provision for an accessory antenna, and has a complex motorized plastic door for the CD compartment that seems destined for mechanical failure.

I purchased this product two days ago because years of waking up to beeps, buzzers, and bells had led me to fear and dread waking up in the morning. The first one I brought had tracking problems that caused the CD player to skip and stutter. I returned it yesterday, and proceeded to test all the comparable units available in an attempt to find a better one. I wound up getting another one of these instead of switching to another product for only one reason -- the sound. With all its flaws, the sound quality this unit delivers just flat blows the competition away. All the other comparable models sounded like the music was coming out of a paper cup. Horrible. I stress tested the new unit and evidently got a decent one -- the CD player performs perfectly, with no skips or stutters -- at least on its first day of use. Time will tell, I suppose.

This time I also bought the two year extended warranty so I can swap it when it breaks.

9 not as cool as it looks
I was so excited about getting a new alarm clock with a cd player and was willing to spend some money. While checking out a bunch we though this was a pretty cool looking and it had all the features I was looking for. We did notice that because of the way it opens there might be problems in the future, so we got the extended insurance. What we didn't exect was the fact that it isn't balanced properly inside, so the cd taps. It definatly woke me up, but the tapping was so annoying it almost got thrown through the window. I'll be returning it today.
10 GREAT ALARM CLOCK!!!
I GOT THIS ALARM CLOCK BECAUSE MY RCA RP-3753 BROKE. HOWEVER, THIS DID NOT INCLUDE A WIRE ANTENNA. I HAD TO BUY A NEW RCA RP-3755 BECAUSE WHEN THE CD PLAYER DOOR AND DISPLAY CAME DOWN, IT MADE A "CLICK" NOISE. I ONLY USE IT FOR IT TO TELL ME WHAT TIME IT IS. THE DISPLAY IS DIM SO I CAN COMTERBLY SLEEP. IV'E HAD IT SENCE LAST YEAR, 2003 AND IT STILL WORKS GREAT!!! AS I LOOK INTO THE SPEAKER COVERS, I THINK IT HAS "CONE" SPEAKER TECHNOLOGY. I THINK EVERYBODY THAT OWN THE RP-3753 SHOULD SELL IT 0N E-BAY AND GET THE RP-3755!!! OH, ONE MORE THING, IT IS GREAT FOR YOU TO GET UP ON ONE ARM TO SEE TIME. IT ALSO SHOWS AM OR PM. ITHINK IT'S GREAT!!!
11 Not worth it
Its nice to have a CD player on your nightstand, but this is not the one to have. It is VERY poorly designed. THe buttons, all 800 of them, are so complicated and small that its very hard to turn this thing off in the morning. The snooze button is impossible to find at 6am and the Open/close door button for the CD player is exactly where most snooze buttons are...directly on top. So instead of hitting snooze you'll most likely open the CD door. Furthermore, the CD player skips. The speakers don't have consistent sound quality. Most times they are really low, sometimes they are regular. And you can't dim the VERY bright backlight which is bright enough to light up a dark room. Don't buy this.
12 I wish I could give it negative stars!
I received this clock radio for Xmas. Within days, it was skipping like crazy when playing the higher tracks of CDs. Later, it was skipping no matter where it was playing on the CD. I couldn't believe that RCA would put out such a cruddy piece of electronics. Come to think of it, we have a couple of inexpensive RCA boomboxes around our house, and they're all pretty awful too--they have major tracking problems. The moral of the story: don't buy RCA's CD players.
13 Looks great, but looks aren't everything...
I've had this clock radio for about a year. It worked fine for the first 6 months I had it. Then the problems started. The radio reception quality was always fair to poor, but I have yet to have a clock radio that had great radio reception. Anyway, I really purchased this for the CD player function, which does not work anymore. First, the door mechanism broke. I somehow found a way to fix it and it started opening and closing again. Then it randomly wouldn't read discs. Now it won't read any discs at all, no matter how many times I load and re-load the unit. I am very disappointed in this machine. For $70, which is expensive to me for a clock radio, I expected A LOT more. The look and size of it are great but there is little else to back up its attractive design. I should also note that this machine had fairly light use. It was not overused or abused in any way. Lesson: Do not judge a book by its cover!
14 pitiful cd player
It's to bad this unit has such a pitiful cd player, it can't track or play 99% of my cd's, but otherwise it has a nice feature set. Each alarm can be set to either alarm, radio, or cd. The alarm play time is adjustable up to 2 hours, and it has battery backup. There is even a new model with a remote control, but after this one I wouldn't touch an RCA with a 10 foot pole.
15 DO NOT buy this radio
Gorgeous design - that's why I bought this one. But beware -- everything the other reviews say is true. The CD door mechanism has indeed worn out -- makes a loud clicking sound and will not play CDs. Have had to send it off to Texas (hoping for replacement rather than repair). Save yourself the trouble - don't buy it! Or if you do, keep in mind there is only a 1 year warranty.
16 Don't buy this unit
1. It has trouble reading CDs. Sometimes I have to try 3-4 times (loading and unloading the disk) before the unit will play.

2. Vertical loading of CDs is bad design. You will inevitably, eventually scratch them getting them in and out of the unit.

3. Radio reception is terrible, and there is no way to add a bigger antenna.

4. I'm willing to bet the motorized door will break within a few months of use. Fewer moving parts = better design (just ask people with motorized minivan doors).

5. Controls on a radio/CD player should be intuitive to anyone who's used a few of these devices. Since I had to read the directions on even the simplest things, I think the controls are poorly thought out.

Just remember, you get what you pay for. This is a cheap unit, and it shows.

17 Big disappointment
I bought this unit based on its looks and confidence in the RCA brand, but have come to think of it as among the biggest purchase disappointments of my life. In the first place, the sound quality is poor, with the sound seeming to struggle against some kind of underlying hum. And the radio station reception is crummy. But then, the CD playeer stopped working after maybe eight weeks -- it simply refuses to recognize you've put a disc into it. I still have the thing on my night stand, because the alarm clock function works fine, but I could have had an electric alarm clock for one-seventh the price. I would have bought another clock radio/CD by now, but I'm worried some other once-trustworthy brand is also putting its name on cheap junk.
18 Bad CD player
I have had two of these items. In both cases the CD player has failed to work properly after about 2 weeks of use. I got so frustrated with this clock radio that I just gave up on the thing. The AM/FM part of the unit is OK and I like the dual wake feature. That is why I choose to rate the unit with one star rather than none. I do not recommend that you buy this unit.
19 A Brand new look in a clock radio.
This is new to me, but just what I have viewed this clock radio/CD player is what I've been looking for. I love the nature sounds, and listening to my favorite CD's while in bed. I would suggest this as a perfect gift for the hard to get up out of bed person.
20 Less than average
Decent sound. However, CD player not up to par. After 3 months the CD player would not read the CD and in the off chance it did, it would often skip and then shut down completely. I would not recommend purchasing this product.
21 Don't make the mistake of buying this.
From day one, there have been nothing but problems with this product. It skips on the higher tracks of every CD I have ever given it (including new ones), and the volume on the radio randomly goes quiet while playing. Purchase the Sony counterpart, not this.
22 Cool, but problematic.
About 2 weeks after purchase (at Target), it began making a hum, and the volume began fluctuating. Buy functionality, not coolness!
23 Hum and volume problems
It looked cool, so I bought it. However, the second week it began to hum intermittently, and the volume fluctuates. I am able to get it to stabilize after several power off/on sequences.
DON'T BUY IT!
24 It skips when playing CR-R audio CD
I would give this RCA product five stars for design and everything; however, I still returned it because when it plays CD-R (audio CD that I converted from MP3), it noticeably skips. For that part, I would give only less than a star. If you use this product to play original CDs most of the time, I highly recommend it. But if you are like me who uses it for CD-R most of the time, forget it. I even bought the higher model (the one with a remote control) and hoped that it won't skip (because it's a different model and more expensive...)...and yes, it skips and I returned it also.
25 It's cute, but it's so dumb
I've been looking everywhere for a decent alarm clock that will start beeping softly and increase volume over time. With the Graduwake feature, I thought my prayers were answered. It sounded good in the store, but at home I realized that it doesn't Graduwake me at all! It starts off really loud, and gets very slightly louder over time. Also, I have to sit up in bed and squint my eyes to read the clock at night. And the CD player just doesn't work sometimes. It whirs and whirs and can't find a track, and you have to press stop and restart it to get it to work. And if you press the nap button, there is no way to cancel it. We were happy with the sound quality though. We returned it today.
26 A Better Choice
Based upon the other reviews, I would recommend RCA RP3750 Clock Radio. It has basically the same features, but not as cool looking. The CD has played perfectly, although I have had it only 5 days. No annoying hum! The door is purely mechanical, as in most cassette players, so should be no problem. The radio tunes stations without a problem. And I bought it at Big Lots for only $29.95!
27 Looks great but won't last
I loved the CD player and the nature sounds CD - but it broke after only one month of use. The door mechanism would no longer close and because I thought I could fix it - I ended up destroying the mechanism, which is all made of plastic gears by the way. Too bad this good looking radio/CD is a piece of junk.
28 great cd player/clock radio!
As far as appearance, the clock is very slick. It's a little bigger and heavier than an average one, but that can be overlooked. Also, the buttons are rather small (especially the snooze for when you're half awake) but once you get used to them, programming is still a breeze. It has great speakers - I was rather surprised by the sound quality. The motorized door for the cd player is very nice, also. Plenty of presets for radio stations. The clock has 2 alarms which can be set so you wake up to the CD, radio, or the typical alarm with a feature they call GraduWake (starts low and gets louder). There is also a Nap timer so you don't have to set an alarm if you're going to be asleep for less than 2 hours. Other features include: battery backup, headphone jack, sleep button (fall asleep to music), adjustable snooze time, CD-R compatible, LCD display (adjustable brightness), automatic alarm shut off, and of course the bonus Nature CD!
29 Don't care for it
This cd player is noisy and unreliable. It has a hard time reading cd's a lot, and because of that it skips tracks, or just keeps spinning the cd and doesn't play the song until you stop it and track up to the next song. While it's spinning or playing a cd, it makes all kinds of whirring or squeeking sounds, ESPECIALLY when it can't read a track... very noisy and irritating. I think it looks cool, and people comment on how neat it is, but honestly, that's all mine is good for. Maybe I got a lemon, but my cd player is awful.
30 Doesn't work anymore
I bought this for my 10 year old daughter... The CD player no longer works at all!! She is very "gentle" on things... The LCD display has lights missing and you can hardly make out the time on the display.. very disappointing...
31 It works as great as it looks.
First of all, let's face it this is one cool looking alarm clock. It just plain looks cool. Okay that was redundant, but I've had one of these for a while and I know of what I speak.

And unlike most things that look cool it works. Irregardless of what other reviews say, I've yet to find a CD that this doesn't not work with. It's reliable and, yes you have to read two pages of the manual before the controls make sense, but once you've done that you're good to go.

Okay, for you self-explanatory-interface people, crack a manual, it won't kill you and once you know how it works it's like riding a bike.

This is one conversation piece as effective as it is impressive.

32 Good dual alarm clock
I've had this clock radio for about 6 months and nothing's broken yet. However, I really only use it for the radio and dual alarms. I've probably only used the CD player 3 times.

I only have a few issues with it. The display is so bright we usually keep a pillow in front of it while we're sleeping. This has caused me to sleep through the muffled alarm a few times.

Second, the buttons for setting and activating the alarms are all the same size and equally spaced. Since there are 6 of them, and they can't be seen unless you're looking down at the clock from above, you have to count them with your fingers to find the one you want.

The dual alarm is great though. We tried a different one that claimed to have dual alarms, but all you could do was set a different time for the buzzer vs. the radio. This one actually has two independent alarms. In fact, it was the only one we found in our price range with true dual alarms and a digital tuner.

33 Not so good.
I thought this clock radio was good at first...but there are some CDs that it refuses to play. When you switch from radio to CD, the volume change will blow out your eardrums. This thing is really bright at night - sometimes it keeps me awake. Learning how all the settings work is a little difficult.
34 Can not read display
I was very disappointed when I plugged it in next to the bed, and found that the backlit display was clearest when seen from directly above the clock. From level, it can hardly be seen at all. From below, it's just a light.

This machine has a lot of wonderful features, according to the manual. The CD played with no problems, although I was concerned about durability with the fancy door-opening mechanism. (Other reviews here have confirmed this.) The sound quality is quite good for a clock-radio, but don't compare it with your stereo, or even decent computer speakers. I didn't notice any excessive noise that others have complained about.

Most baffling - when I took it back to the store, I looked again at the display model. The time is easily visible from all angles! More interesting - there was a switch on the back of mine for dimming the display. (I tried it both ways, and it didn't help.) The display model had a switch in the same location, but for a COMPLETELY UNRELATED FUNCTION, and there was apparently no dimmer switch anywhere on it. Yet this is supposedly the same model number. What's up with that, RCA?

It did not have a "track repeat" type function for CD sleep, nor a "play this one track then stop". There are no internal nature sounds, although it comes with a CD. If you want to fall asleep listening to nature sounds, and wake up to something different on the CD, you're out of luck.

Caveat emptor!

35 Great Alarm Clock
I got this for my husband and myself becasue we wake up at two different times in the morning. And the radio frequency always seemed to change overnight on our old alarm clock. We enjoy the fact that we can pick the CD and even song we want to wake up to, and can change it whenever we want. Sure beats morning djs as the first thing we used to hear! The sound quality could be better, but for the price, we love it!
36 CD Player skips
The cd player is ... ... the rest of it (size, price, radio, and other features) is great but the cd player skips if a cd has the slightest spec of dust on it.
37 A bad choice
My main complaint with this cd-player is that after only 6 months, the motorized door started malfunctioning. Once that began happening, it would no longer play cd's. Of course, after so long, I no longer have my receipt, so what's a girl to do? Stick with cheaper player with no motorized door...
38 Returned it, second CD player quit too.
I bought this because of the Brand name and compact size. The CD player quit working after about 5 days. Returned it to the store and got another. Now that the warranty time is over, the second one quit working too. I will be discarding it and getting something else.
39 RCA CD/Clock Radio
The sound on this radio is terrible; it alternates between being too soft, yet somewhat clear to loud with electronic feedback of some kind. Last week, the CD player stopped reading disks, and the usual cd-player cleaning has not helped. I would recommend looking for another style or brand.
40 Better than I expected!
After reading the reviews from this site, I was worried about purchasing this item. My suitemate next door has it and he said he likes it, so I thought if it dosent work I'll just return it. Well, this wont be going back anytime soon. I paid close attention to what the other reviews had ragged on. I have not had any of these problems at all. The cd player makes a noise when you first put a cd in, but after than is completely silent. In fact, I have fallen asleep listening to a cd the past two nights since I bought this. The radio stations come in crystal clear. My only complaint is that the lcd screen is a little bright in the darkness, but I've had no problems falling asleep so far. It takes a couple times until you can figure out what all the buttons are for, but now that I have played with it some, it's easy. I must say, this system is great and has a lot of nice features. Dont let the price distract you. It's a bit pricey, but so far, I think it's worth every penny. Dont hesitate, this is the one you want!
41 Bad reception
I bought this cd player/alarm clock radio for the compact design and playing cds in my infants/computer room... it makes such a loud noise from the cd spinning after only about 5 uses that I had to return it. The radio stations don't come in well and are clearly full of static (a feature I was willing to ignore because I mainly purchased it for the cd player and compact shape). I thought I would be saving space but this unit was a waste of space instead...who said bigger wasn't always better :)
42 Absolute Junk
I have two units that have both quit working. Unfortunatley out of the return period I am just going to have to settle for throwing the darn things away. In both cases the CD player quit working. It is a rather expensive paper weight.
43 One big annoyance ruins it all.
Initially, this system seems ideal. It has a great design and the alarm feature, while very difficult to learn how to use, works fine. The sound is actually even decent for the typical clock radio. There is one problem--that ever-present humming. Maybe it's just my ears, but whenever I play CDs, at low to moderate volumes, there seems to be this constant high-pitched whistle--I think it's from the CD spinning around. At any rate, I returned the clock pretty early on. I never tried another one, but if you buy this, keep a look out for that annoyance. It ruined the product for me.
44 Can you hear me now?
I sent one of these to my son for Christmas, and I hope his works better than mine or the other peoples in the reviews I have read. I can only get 2 stations on the FM band, and zero on the AM band. I tried to turn it in every direction, with the cord on both sides, and straight out the back and no luck. Its on its way back for my credit. Sorry RCA but even the cute dog couldnt help this one.
45 Looks can be deceiving !
I purchased this product as a Christmas present and everyone ended up disappointed. Here are my findings. 1. The reception is terrible terrible terrible ! Radio was unable to pick up a clean signal from a variety of major local FM stations. 2. You can barely make out the time on this thing, there is no backlit setting and this makes it almost useless as a clock radio. It's hard to imagine that a product that has so much going for it also has so much working against it. RCA should fire the group responsible for this product making it to market. Very disappointing.
46 Buyer Beware!!
I bought my clock radio not too long ago. Since then the CD player just opens automatically. I'm sleeping and in the middle of the night I hear the CD player opening. I go to close it and fall back asleep and then it OPENS again. I think it's possessed! I also found this product difficult set because of all the small buttons. The faulty CD player was a REAL dissapointment. I'm returning it today!
47 DO NOT BUY!!!!
I have had two of these alarm clocks. Both of them broke after a couple of months. The first one lasted about a month, and then one morning, the alarm did not go off, causing me to be over an hour late to work. The cd just stopped working. When you hit play, it would try to spin, stop, and then the face plate would open. I returned it, and the second one broke in the same manner after two months. I returned it and bought a Sony!
48 Radio reception is poor
There is a distinct background hissing noise on even the clearest stations. My old analog radio gets the same stations clearly with no background noise.

This is an attractive looking unit and has great alarm clock features but it is only useful as an alarm clock because of the the poor reception performance. There is no place to add an antenna.

I regret that I'm returning the unit.

49 Returning Mine Today
I had no problem with the CD as others appear to have had but I've only had the unit for 5 days. My disappointment was with the sound and display. There was a background humming/warbling noise on both AM/FM at various times which would go away when the radio was switched off, then on again---so I knew it wasn't just poor reception. As for the display, I can barely even distinguish the numerals at night---for all intents and purposes it can't be read from a distance of over 18 inches so if you're putting it on a nightstand, think again. As far as I'm concerned, the best displays for any digital clock remain the illimunated red, green, blue, etc. LED's---NOT LCD's with backlit backgrounds.
50 Didn't even get 24 hours use out of it
The CD player stopped working about 18 hours after I purchased it. At least I think it's the CD player, I can't get my CD out of it, the display is blank, and none of the other buttons (for setting the time or turning the radio on) are working either. It's going back. What a piece of junk!
51 Should have looked here first.....
I have to corroborate the other reviews about the CD player--I'm returning mine today because it NEVER worked. Non-functional right out of the box. Absolutely ridiculous. I like the design a lot--more than any other model--but the CD player is kind of a critical component here.... I'm off to buy the sony version which seems to have received much better reviews!

Also, on another note, there is a lot of "background" hissing from the speakers. Very noticable when using the radio alarm at low volumes.

52 RCA CD/Clock Radio
I only gave this a one-star rating instead of a zero (based on design only). However, the quality control of the CD player is questionable. The first time we purchased this product, we had to exchange it because the CD player was not recognizing the disks. The disks in the one we own now skip and has a tracking problem.
53 Poor Quality Control
I purchased the first one (from another distributor) only to have the CD player fail to recognize a CD after 1 month use. This was returned and a new one recieved only to have CD tracking / skipping problem right out of the box.
Two items with two separate CD failures suggest a Quality Control problem with the CD reader manufacturer.
54 a very nice system
this alarm radio cd player is great, 11 station presets/2 alarms (set them to the radio a cd track or tone) very good speakers. plus a free nature sound cd to help you fall asleep.
55 perfect all in one system
I love this radio it is the perfect size and as everything you could want.

Quote of the Day:

The Greatest Mathematical Error

The Mariner I space probe was launched from Cape Canaveral on 28
July 1962 towards Venus. After 13 minutes' flight a booster engine would
give acceleration up to 25,820 mph; after 44 minutes 9,800 solar cells
would unfold; after 80 days a computer would calculate the final course
corrections and after 100 days the craft would cirlce the unknown planet,
scanning the mysterious cloud in which it is bathed.
However, with an efficiency that is truly heartening, Mariner I
plunged into the Atlantic Ocean only four minutes after takeoff.
Inquiries later revealed that a minus sign had been omitted from
the instructions fed into the computer. "It was human error", a launch
spokesman said.
This minus sign cost L4,280,000.
