1 An impressive value
I purchased this item for work due to its low price and front auxiliary input and was quite pleasantly surprised. It is a powerful unit for the money with very good overall sound and works flawlessly after more than three months of constant 8-hour plus days with occasional power surges and outings. The system comes with an AM loop antenna and a long piece of coated wire for FM, and reception is quite respectable on both bands. It also ships with a simple and effective remote control.
This is obviously not a high-end luxury minisystem, but the components seem to be chosen well. The head unit doesn't have many real fancy features: just primitive EQ function with presets and a basic tray-style 5 disc CD changer that can read CD-RWs but doesn't do mp3 decoding. The front Aux input works exactly like it should and allows you to hook it up to an external stereo audio source like a DVD player or a (probably preamped) record player. The cassette deck can record and play but I don't believe it has auto-reverse.
The speakers are a good, standard two-way bookshelf design with a large and functional flared port on the front plastic face. The aggressive porting design and good quality drivers delivers great sound at this price point. Using the bass boost function at really high listening levels causes ugly port noise, but the bass boost is totally unnecessary to begin with. These aren't $500 Paradigm bookshelf HT speakers but they beat most cheesy multiported minisystem speakers in sound quality.
The amplifier stage seems pretty beefy for the money so this system can thump right out of the box. I believe the unit is rated to pull more than 120 real watts from the wall socket which means you could easily throw on a set of cheap, high efficiency floor standing speakers like the 12" KLH three-ways and more completely rock your block with minimal distortion and very little money.
This is the one of the best sounding minisystems I've seen that retails around or under $125. Would be near perfect for the money with mp3 playback.
