Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin)

The Wall (Live in Berlin) seemed uninspired and gimmicky in 1990 but looks and sounds terrifically compelling on DVD, thanks to its vivid image quality and greatly improved audio mixes. The freshly mineswept Potsdamer platz--a once-thriving plaza destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943--proved the perfect place to mark the opening of the Berlin Wall with an all-star production of Pink Floyd's magnum opus: a Wall for a wall. An unlikely assemblage of musicians augments Roger Waters's impressive house band (led by guitarist Rick DiFonzo and organ wizard Nick Glennie-Smith), with everyone from the Scorpions to Joni Mitchell to the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Army getting in on the rock-opera action. Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, James Galway, Thomas Dolby, and Albert Finney all turn in tasty cameos, while Sinead O'Connor looks unaccountably aloof in "Mother." The documentary is thorough and juicy, and producer Tony Hollingsworth offers an above-par essay in the booklet. --Michael Mikesell
1 Welcome E. Germany
I checked out of the Pink Floyd fan club after they released Wish You Were Here, perhaps their most accomplished work. (YMMV). So I never paid much attention to The Wall when it was released, though it was hard to avoid entirely due to the massive airplay it got. In fact, watching this DVD was the first time I'd heard The Wall in its entirety (minus the Outside The Wall song, which was not performed at the show). As such, it's caused me to dig out the CD and listen to it closely, gaining new appreciation for the work.

But think for a moment what this concert must have represented to the youth of E. Berlin when it was performed in 1990. Soon after the wall came down, some of the biggest names in music came to town and welcomed the former communists to western Europe. The parallels between the psychological prison of the CD and the real prison of the country must have brought much emotion to the surface. Too bad there wasn't much video coverage of the massive crowd of spectators.

Having different artists each sing a song from the album was inspired, and the choices of their songs seemed appropriate to me (when I later heard the CD, I could easily visualise how they came to choose Bryan Adams to sing that one song. And for me the Van Morrison rendition of Comfortably Numb was a great cover. Sure, it wasn't the same as the Floyd would do it, but that's not the point - he was paying homage to the band and participating in their success.

If you get a chance, block out some time and watch this DVD at one sitting on a surround-sound system. It's a great night out!

2 Excellent
A great find for all those pink floyd fans or not. Excellent cast, of artists and singers. Love it and will keep on lvin it. Don't let anyone tell you differently. A great buy for anyone who likes music. i wish there was more of it!!!! From begining to end it is spectacular. It is not only a concert, a show insde it self. Buy it with great pride.
3 Not perfect, but very good
A couple bad choices in the celebrity lineup: Sinead (she looked bored, out of place) and Van Morrison (his voice was shot). All the rest were fine to excellent. Even Lauper, who I am not a fan of, didn't annoy me with her energetic performance. As usual Roger put together an awesome backing band. BTW, I don't think Roger gets adequate credit for his vocals. His voice is very strong and he handles the high stuff really well. Bravo to him for putting together this amazing production and the DVD captures it well. I won't watch it as often as his In The Flesh Live DVD (which is flat out spectacular) but I'm certainly glad I bought it.
4 must see
this is the best live concert that i have ever seen on tape. i had it on a vhs tape when it first came out. just ordered it on dvd cant wait to check it out on my 5.1 theater system
5 Sure, it's overblown but I loved it.

This is more of a spectacle than a concert. It's overblown. It's damn near ridiculous with the helicopters, the limousines on stage, the hundreds of extras, and the A-list guest singers/performers. But, it's absoluely wonderful.

I'm a Pink Floyd fan; there's no doubt about that. And, I love this concert.

It pains me to say this, but Cyndi Lauper is annoying. Fortunately, she only sings one song. The rest of the guest singers complement the show - Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, and Joni Mitchel to name just a few.

The theatrics are just over the top. I can't help but believe that this DVD provides the best seat in the house. For anyone having actually attended the concert, I'm sure a lot was lost visually. So much of the concert takes place behind the Wall. And, there are tens of thousands of concert goers - dare I say hundreds of thousands. I doubt the audio could have been that good for them. For the DVD viewer, the audio is excellent. Furthermore, the DVD blows the viewer away with the vastness of it all.

It's a lot of pomp, but Waters pulls it off with style.

6 We're still waiting for Pink Floyd The Wall Live DVD
Ok Roger, you know how good songwriter you are. But even you sometimes have to admit you have done some really great mistakes, like this 1990 performance with all those horrible guest singers and musicians. Only Sinead O'Connor is great, also Scorpions and Brian Adams are very nice, but the rest...Roger, you really have to admit The Wall without David Gilmour's guitar and vocals is simply NOT THE WALL, that's the truth. Please Roger don't be obstinate anymore and release the most hystorial, wonderful, powerful and hidden performance from all times, and the most awaited DVD as well... Pink Floyd The Wall Live. All fans know there're enough footage from Earls court August 1980, as well Earls Court June 1981.
Thanks
7 A great live concert....
Growing up during the cold war and seeing the Berlin Wall being erected,it was a very emotional experience for me to watch this DVD. The symbolism of seeing the wall being demolished near the end of the concert brought tears to my eyes. Roger Waters surounds himself with a group of great performers and added some interesting touches with marching bands, good orchestras and top actors such as Albert Finney.
8 bad reviews, high stars?
Ok, as everyone has said this is a waist of money, a horrible attempt to create an incredible experience...but why is everyone saying how bad it is & still giving it 4 & 5 stars?
9 Excellent Concert!
Rog sells out., August 23, 2004
Reviewer: T. Brown "phoenix11" (Vacaville, CA. United States)

The Wall is an untouchable masterpiece and Roger Waters let hacks do half of it!! I am a floydian but having Cyndi Lauper and Sinead O'Connor makes me sick. Rog was in this debacle for the cash!

You don't know your facts to well do you? Here, let me help you out so maybe you will become less ignorant:

12 months before the concert, Potsdomer Platz was an area of no mans land between Russia controlled, East Berlin and West Berlin. Roger had joked he would only perform 'The Wall concert again if the wall in Germany fell. A video (and Laser disc) was also released of this performance. All profits and future royalties from the sales of the album/video go to 'The Memorial Fund For Disaster Relief' a Leonard Cheshire charity.
10 If you like Roger Waters, you're going to love this
I agree with some of the other comments made on here about Cyndi Lauper and Bryan Adams, and others, possibly too fluffy a bunny for this dark album. However, they performed the songs rather well. If you ever enjoyed the old "The Wall" soundtrack, then this album will blow you away. The sound and camera work is not just good, it has a way of sucking you into the performance. You just got to see it. I'll never do it justice describing it to ya on here. Oh yea, if you have surround sound, make sure you pick 5.1 surround from menu. It's awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

12 ABSOLUTLEY INCREDIBLE !!!!!
well...............I can only describe this DVD as AWESOME. I sat and watched this show over & over & over the very first day I got it in the mail. I was stunned ! It is very well done. The "guest" appearences or "cast" really blew me away. The entire show was super! I for one DEFINITLEY enjoyed this DVD....and am just thrilled to have it in my growing DVD/Music Collection.
13 It's just not floyd...
As a die-hard Pink Floyd fan, I wasn't very stunned by this DVD.
It's a big spectacular show and it must have been fabulous to all of the people who were there, but I'm not really fond of all the 'stars' like Brian Adams or Cindy Lauper who just don't fit in.
The Wall is a very good but also a very dark album, and it's not the right album to be played by a bunch of famous rockartists.
Most of the time I skip to the parts that Waters sings, for me, these are the highlights.

I really hope someday the original Wall-show (of '81) will be released on DVD of VHS.

14 roger waters - The wall (live in berlin)
I was floored with this concert. I sat in awe as I watched and listened in surround sound. If you haven't seen it, you are missing one of the best concerts ever. It is an unbelieveably huge production. It was so good I bought the CD as well.
15 Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin)
Very well put together, Roger Water's inner child comes out again! Mind stimulating, With your'e eyes open or closed. Two thumbs-up
16 very late
I placed this order 1/24/04 as of 2/08/04 I still have not recived my DVD
17 lukewarm with few redeeming qualities
Buy this if you are interested in seeing "The Wall" live but were not alive during the original tour. To my knowledge, this is the only Video release of "The Wall" live. The production is excellent, and the format is very much the same as the original 1980-81 touring production, complete with a towering wall and haunting Gerald Scarfe animation.

Waters' "Bleeding Heart Band" of virtual unknowns is collectively competent and plays faithful interpretations of the music. There's no Gilmour, but his solos are respectfully preserved.

The problem that I have with this version of "The Wall" is the selection of celebrity session musicians. With few exceptions, I found them grossly inappropriate and seriously detrimental to the Floyd sound. For example, I miss Gilmour's smooth voice on the chorus of "Mother", which has been replaced by a three-part folk harmony which simply doesn't work for the song. It's not that it's bad, but simply that it's no acceptable substitute.

I'm not even sure what the motivation was for such a bizarre, cross-genre ensemble of washed-up has-beens and Pop icons. Cyndi Lauper singing "Another Brick in the Wall - Part II" made me laugh. I'm pretty sure that she was 4 years past her prime when this was released. Van Morrison sings the chorus to comfortably numb in a flat baritone, destroying the entire take. Bryan Adams poses with an unplugged guitar during "Young Lust" (you can even see him strumming during a sustained chord). These are just a few examples.

The final nail in the coffin is the "We Are The World"-style finale "The Tide is Turning", in which each of the celebrities sing a line to an atrocious song filled with remorse and social conscience. "Outside the Wall" is omitted, and instead we are served Joni Mitchell and Sinead O'Connor patting themselves on the back for a job well done while nodding to the fall of communism. No thanks.

18 This Is Bigger Than Any "Rock Band", This Is The Wall.
Ok, first of all you need to go into this realizing that The Wall is a performance piece...it really has very little to do with PINK FLOYD (other than the fact that one of it's members composed it)...similarly, just as you would with any proper opera...you need to forget about the celebrity status of the various performers and vocalists and just take their talents for what they are...there were less than half of the performers whom I care about the body of work they've produced, however...you can't argue with the fact that every single performer was talented enough to pull off their part and did a fine job...the casting wasn't ideal...but it was very inspired in my opinion.
I will admit I am a Roger Waters fan...Roger Waters was Pink Floyd (as in it's earlier incarnation Syd Barrett was) - the other members were just a very very good backing band...I certainly was never a fan of David Gilmours mumbling, monotone drone of a voice, but he is an excellent guitarist - as is the guitarist in Waters band...
If you think you can look at this as the spectacle that is The Wall ... in and of itelf... then go for it...if not...then take a pass on it...it will only annoy you.
I personally loved it and was glad to hear it being done differently from the Pink Floyd version (although that will always be the standard to judge it by)...I mean, I've heard it like that a zillion times in it's original incarnation.
The sound is fantastic and the visuals are excellent...it's a very good performance ...if you can get into it with no preconcieved notions...you'll enjoy yourself considerably.
19 like allis is to wonder land ,,pink floyd is to the wall

20 I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST EXPERIENCED
The ONLY reason this DVD got 2 stars is for the monumental effort that went in to producing it. Visually, I really had no complaints - Camera angles were solid and the actual production of the DVD was well done. This in itself should have warranted at LEAST 3 start correct? NOT SO FAST. Very few times in my life have I wanted to poke my eardrums out with a fork ... this was one of them. I have never experienced such a musical hack job in my life! The "artists" they collected for this production absolutely and unequivocally DESTROYED Pink Floyd The Wall - For whatever stupid egotistical reasons Gilmore and Waters are not speaking, they should have put aside their differences for ONE NIGHT and did this thing the RIGHT way. Some things should never be tampered with - This is proof positive.
21 VERY GOOD
with all the 'Should David G have been here or not' aside, this was a very good presentation. And since I had actually viewed it when it was presented way back when, I was concerned about the presentation of this DVD. (also curious as to why it took so long) All concerns were settled when I watched it. I love the performances, and the only one I really didn't care for was Cindy Laupers, but to great relief Joni Mitchell really spooked up the mix and so did S. O'Connor.. . those two gals really grasped the fear and anxiety in the music greatly...

And how about the Scorpions with IN THE FLESH.. quite a good job.

Last but not least, watching R. Waters sing Goodbye Blue Sky from a hole in the bricks was just great stuff.

I really hope Pink Floyd fans get this cd, and Roger Water/David Gilmore fans too... at least the fans can bridge the gap with this excellent product.

22 This DVD is "almost" perfect
This was a fabulous show if not for THREE points:

1. David Gilmour wasn't there
2. They just "had" to put Sinead onstage, staring at her feet the whole time. I fail to see whats so great about her.
3. Roger Waters made a mistake in choosing Van Morrison to sing "Comfortably Numb." Van is a classic singer, no doubt, but he just doesn't have the right type of voice to sing "Comfortably Numb." If David Gilmour couldn't have been there to sing it, they should have used someone with a soft, mellow voice that could have sung the song the way it was MEANT to be sung. By the way, is there anyone out there that can tell me who the two main guitarists were? One guy was kinda skinny and had black shoulder length hair and played most of the guitar parts. The other guitarist played a Les Paul, mostly. Thanks. JonM11100@aol.com

23 Pleasantly surprised
My expectations were rather muted going into this. Primarily due to the "Celebrity" cast. I also had some real concerns over sound quality since it was recorded almost 15 years ago. The sound however is flat out amazing though. Although my issues with the Celebrity cast did not disappear, the quality of the sound and enormity of the production itself made the cast of characters seem less important. The list of those performers seems really stale today, but at the time of the show, they were all "A" list. I think some complaints I've read hold little merit or were the product of lack of understanding of the original source material. Someone said the scorpions attire was in bad taste for such an event. Well folks, that was on purpose! They were the "Surrogate" band which was supposed to be representative of all of the excess in rock and roll that has at one time or another caused many of us to lose sight of the music.

Although, I've never been a Sinead O'conner fan, I thought she was a perfectly appropriate representation of the child in Pink. Her vocals were also very moving. Again, I'm not a Brian Adams fan, but his gritty voice was an excellent fit for "Young Lust". And, no he wasn't really playing guitar, or at least he wasn't wired for sound. He, like the scorpions were there simply to provide vocals and window dressing. The music was thankfully performed strictly by Roger's amazing band. Joni Mitchell's performance was flat out creepy (in a good way)perfect for "Goodbye Blue Sky". Cindi lauper was nothing but annoying. Van morrison (who I love), seemed painfully out of place in this production. I ached for the return of David Gilmour's silky voice during Van's performance of "Comfortably Numb"

My biggest issue with the DVD was the camera angles and distances used for the bulk of the show. The show was so enormous that I think the best overall perspective would have been maybe a hundred and fifty feet or so from the stage. This view was curiously entirely absent. Everything was shot either up close (Like most concert footage), or so far away that the perfomers were merely a speck in the camera lense. These longs distance shots were used primarily between songs though and really did give the viewer an idea of just how huge the show was. In fact I would say the production was probably 4 to 5 times the size of Pink Floyds original prodution. All of the tight camera shots made me feel too much like I was watching a concert video rather than experiencing the show. Another interesting perspective was the footage shot behind the wall after the band had been completely closed off from the audience. It really made me appreciate how weird that must have been for Both Pink Floyd in the original performance and for Roger's band in this version. I mean here you are playing your heart out and you can't even see your audience, and you know they can't see you either. I would liked to have seen a little more of the audience perspective during this part of the show.

And to those Floyd fans who don't think the wall should be done without the original band, I do sympathize. But the fact is, they were asked to perform, and declined. Understandably, the bad blood between the Waters & Floyd camps was too much to overcome under such short notice, even for such a meaningful event and cause. But, the bottom line is that "The Wall" is Roger's brain child. You can count both the musical & lyrical credits of other band members for the double album on one hand. The wall is the least musical of the Floyd creations due to the lack of input of those other band members. But in pure lyrical and conceptual terms, I still feel it is once of the most brilliant and important works of my generation. I still hold out hope that some day, all of the members including Roger will be able to put their egos and bitterness aside and re-unite to produce new music and tour. Until that day however, I feel very fortunate to re-live the wall experience in this powerful incarnation.

24 A must have concert DVD
Outstanding Rock/Stage performance. Waters did an excellent job of putting an ensemble of talented and complimentary musicians together for a momentous gathering with great music. With the exception of Van Morison and Cindy Lauper, the cameo musical quests did not detract from the great original score of The Wall. The DVD 5.1 re-mastered soundtrack sounded great and added to the nice visuals.
25 The best DVD show I have!
I'm a Pink Floyd fan, so anything about it is valid. Of course I did prefer the original band doing this concert, but Water's and his guests performance was fabulous! Remind me my youth at the best. I could give 6 stars if someone else could had sing instead Sinad. Great DVD, the image and sound is very nice for something recorded 15 years ago. You get a interview with Water (who complains about Sinad too)and producers at the end. A must for any Pink Floyd fan. It's no doubt the best musical DVD I have.
26 Better than I could imagine!
When this record was first released, I rejected it on the sole fact that it included Sinead Oconnor. I didn't care about her politics, but her vocals were more annoying than a teacher's new chalk on a squeaky clean board. As a huge Pink Floyd fan, I couldn't understand the watering down of such great music by Waters, and it obviously took me several years to overcome that.

When I saw this DVD on special, I bought it, stuck it into my surround sound system, and proceeded to fall into another day and time. The lyrics and music transcended everything that they had come to mean to me and became symbols for a movement. Regardless of what the others have said below, every song was performed with power and passion. I never would have dreamed that I would enjoy "Comfortably Numb" performed by the same man known for such club favs as "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Domino", but Morrison was superb. Even the dreaded Oconnor was convincing as a character in "The Wall".

No doubt that this performance was every bit as politically accurate then as it is now. Whether the wall was coming down in Germany or the Middle East looks for peace, these songs speak to us just as universally.

Great work, Mr. Waters. Now where is a DVD of "The Wall" to go with "Is There Anybody Out There?"?.

27 I agree with Topeka, KS!
This was a MAJOR let down! The only people who should perform "The Wall" - especially in this spectacular concept of a concert - are the original members of Pink Floyd. NO ONE, I repeat NO ONE can come close to matching the sheer brilliance & perfect collaboration of sound/vocals of Pink Floyd. Why Waters chose to include all these people in this concert is beyond me. I would have to say the absolute WORST, without a doubt, most gut-wrenchingly sickening part was Van Morrison singing "Comfortably Numb". Is he kidding?! Joni Mitchell faired no better. And, is it me, or does Bryan Adams appear as though he's not really playing guitar? Maybe it's me. Anyway, the "cameo" performers completely ruined this for me. My review gives it one star for actually having Roger Waters in it! (His performance would've received more stars, but the guests were SO BAD that I had to deduct a few.) And it gets another star because every time I see it, I'm forced to put on the CD, or the original movie, both of which I love.
28 Okay...
I already reviewed the SACD version of this album, but I might as well do the DVD as well. Especially since they keep pushing it. Anyways.....

This was a very cool concert, I wish I could have been to Berlin in person to see it when it occurred but oh well. Anyways, it is very well put together. Roger managed to assemble a good supporting cast (shame he couldn't assemble the other members of Floyd). I can certainly understand why Pink Floyd did a very limited release in its first iteration.

The DVD itself is a very good transfer. Anywas, Floyd needs to release the other stuff on DVD...

29 Not bad....
After watching this concert 3/4 of the way through, I was planning on giving the thing a 1-star, no doubt. But when everyone came out and performed "The Tide is Turning" off or Roger's album "Radio KAOS", I was blown away. After watching this concert for the second time, I like it, but it still has many faults.

First off, it's not a full concert, is a combination of clips from the rehearsal and the actual concert. plus some of the clips are concert footage combined with rehearsal audio (watch cyndi's lips on the Tide is Turning). I realize that there were many technical errors causing them to stop songs during the concert night, but in my opinion, they should have used the rehearsal concert (which took place the night before) for the video release, or have just combined clips of day one and day two, each with their REAL audio, NOT audio from another day. It makes it feel like they're lipsyncing and it is VERY annoying.

When it comes to the guest performers, I thought they were all great. I was very much annoyed that Joni Mitchell and Sinead O'Connor on such boring songs, it was a big letdown. Other than that Cyndi, Van, Paul, The Scorpions, and Brian all did good jobs on their songs (even though I thought the Scorpions were dressed pretty trashy for that sort of occasion). It was really funny seeing The Band (Bob Dylans Backup Band) singing Comfortably Numb along with Van.

If your looking for a seamless live recreation of the Wall, look elsewhere, if you've heard the damn thing all but too much and you want to hear something new, check this out.

This concert also bears a lot of historical significance to me personally, whenever I watch them play "the Tide is Turning" is reminds me of how everyone used to think what a happy and beautiful place the world would be after the fall of communism, but nothing really changed.

30 They really tried. They really tried their best. But...
This concert should have been one of the greatest concerts ever. Roger Waters' show about an isolated rock star slowly building a wall between himself and his audience is truly the most original idea and concept and of the best shows in history. However, this show had one major flaw. GUEST STARS. I hate it when someone takes something as great as the Wall and have an all star cast perform it. The only people who should perform the wall are Waters, Gilmour, Mason, and Wright. The music also seemed flawed at times, For example the accordian in Mother, it didn't seem to fit in quite right. But the worst part of all is OH MY GOD WHAT A FABULOUS ROOM. That actress really and I mean REALLY overdid it. . Another flaw was that they cut out Outside the Wall. Why? That would make the show complete, especially what happens after the Trial. Thats another thing, the Trial is way better with the animated prosecuter, wife, mother and most of all, Worm your Honor. The live action trial didn't have the effect that the animated one in the film did. Anyway that is enough of my complaints. Roger's performances in this were nothing short of amazing but Waters was the only good thing. They should of let him perform the songs instead of screw ones up, like when Cyndi Lauper does Another Brick in the Wall part II . Is there anybody out there? is way better. (Yes I know you don't have the visuals for that musically it is better) I'll stop complaining now so you can blast this review.
31 What a Let Down
When I saw all the big names appearing at the concert, I thought "It has to be too good to be true." Indeed it was. By the time they hit "Another Brick in the Wall part 2" you think it's going to be a great concert (plus.. well... Cyndi Lauper looks sexy as hell in the schoolgirl outfit), but then comes that absolutely horribly played guitar solo, and then you get to watch the keyboard guy get faaaarr too into it and tries to dance with Cyndi while playing, and THEN you see the bald German guy with three spikes of hair shooting strait up off his head jump out of no where and start tear it up on a "Key-Tar", adn you realize this is not going to be a good concert. I mean, I'm sure the audio CD is fine, but in addition to the above problems, the concert is also VERY dark and somewhat hard to see everyone. In the end, download the mpeg of Cyndi singing "Another Brick.." and Buy "In The Flesh" by Roger Waters on DVD or "Pulse" by Pink Floyd (Minus Waters) for a great post-pink concert.
32 The Wall DVD from a fan's perspective
As someone who was one of the 300,000 that had the pleasure to experience this event live, I say that this DVD is a must have for any Pink Floyd/Roger Waters fan. Because of the times, what was going on socially, politically, and economically; who was involved in any aspect of the show's production; and WHERE this event was held; this was arguably the most significant concert event of our time. I found the background extras very entertaining and informative and gave me a different perspective on the imporance of this event. For those that bought this on VHS (I am one of them), this event was MADE for the DVD format and this re release was a LONG time coming.
33 fabulous sound
all have been said about this historic event. This dvd is a must have.
A special rating should be given for the amazing quality of the sound and the 5.1 mixing.
This is a true 5.1 mixing very difficult to find on other dvd.
34 The Greatest Rock Theater You'll Ever See
Saturday, July 21, 1990 is a day I will never forget. Former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters & special guests performed a charity concert of the classic Floyd rock opera, "The Wall," at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany, to celebrate the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. I just so happened to be in England at the time, and I watched the worldwide broadcast of this staggering rock concert on BBC TV that evening, and it left an impression on me that has never gone away. This phenomenal show was and IS the ultimate in rock theater, and has never been surpassed. Since I never got to see Pink Floyd perform "The Wall" live back in 1980, watching the Berlin concert more than made up for that. 13 years later, this landmark concert has finally been released on DVD at last, and it still holds up magnificently. Granted, Pink Floyd themselves had nothing to do with this concert, as Roger Waters was (and still is) not on good terms with his former bandmates, but Roger, the main composer of "The Wall," is in top form in this show, and he alligned himself that evening with some pretty huge names in music---Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, members of The Band, Bryan Adams, Sinead O'Connor, the Scorpions, Paul Carrack, James Galway, Ute Lemper, as well as 80's staples Cyndi Lauper & Thomas Dolby, and many more. Along with an orchestra & chorus conducted by Michael Kamen---as well as the Marching Band Of The Combined Soviet Forces---Roger & his own Bleeding Heart Band, including guitarists Rick DiFonzo & Snowy White, play this famous rock concept album superbly, and the vocal turns by Roger and all the guest vocalists are marvelous. The production values, including the mammoth Wall itself (reportedly measuring 550 feet wide and 82 feet high), the gargantuan inflatables of the Teacher and Pig characters, the colorful costumes, props, lighting effects, Gerald Scarfe animations and other provocative projections shown on the Wall itself are all absolutely astonishing. And when you see that mighty Wall come crashing down brick by brick at the concert's end, it is one of the most phenomenal sights you will ever see. "The Wall: Live In Berlin" is also outstanding in that it is probably the only concert ever staged that is actually *better* to watch on TV than if you had actually been there live. The camerawork throughout is amazing, and takes you places that the live audience couldn't go: into the specially-built living room in the high corner of the Wall as Roger sings "One Of My Turns" and "Don't Leave Me Now," behind the Wall as Paul Carrack sings "Hey You," and high atop the Wall as Difonzo & White do their awesome guitar solos on "Comfortably Numb."Admittedly, the video version of "The Wall: Live In Berlin" has a little bit of touch-up work done on it, or, what is affectionately known in the business as "cheating." The power went out early in the show during Ute Lemper's "The Thin Ice," Roger's "Another Brick In The Wall Part 1," and again during Sinead O'Connor's "Mother," so the performances you see of "The Thin Ice" & "Another Brick...Part 1" were actually shot several hours *after* the concert had ended, and "Mother" was taken from footage of the final rehearsal that was done the previous night (Roger's lack of sunglasses during these songs is the giveaway). Also, Ute's portrayal of The Wife during "The Trial" sequence was also shot *after* the concert, as the camera malfunctioned during her live performance. But it certainly goes without saying that these touch-up performances were absolutely necessary in order to present the show in it's entirety, and besides, they blend in with the genuine live performances very seamlessly.Following in the footsteps of Pete Townshend, who brought The Who's classic rock opera "Tommy" to the Broadway stage, Roger Waters has been working for many years on a "proper" theatrical staging of Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Whether or not "The Wall" ever makes it to Broadway still remains to be seen, but, at the very least, Roger successfully brought the live rendition of the album to the masses in this landmark concert, blessedly recorded for posterity to be enjoyed again and again. "The Wall: Live In Berlin" is one of the most sensational rock concerts ever staged, and is a must-own DVD for every fan of this legendary concept album. Thank you, Roger!
35 5 star DVD, but with one caveat
This concert easily merits a five star rating, but I am reasonably sure that this DVD version differs oh so slightly from the VHS and LaserDisc versions. For example, some audience clap-along at the end of a brief acoustic guitar bit seems to have been erased, a few shot selections seem to have been altered, and I'm fairly sure that some rehearsal footage has been substituted in place of "event" footage in an area other than the areas previously acknowledged. I've been watching this show on VHS and LaserDisc for many years, and watching the DVD, well, something seemed a bit "off" in spots. It isn't something I can point a finger to, but I sensed a few barely perceptible adjustments and changes here and there.
Or maybe I'm just losing (more of) my mind.

But it is a jaw-dropping experience to watch this show with the improved clarity and depth of picture that you get with DVD compared to the other formats. Cyndi Lauper's "contribution" notwithstanding, the whole show is excellent. Paul Carrack's vocals on "Hey You" bests any other singer's version, hands down.

36 The Power of Roger Waters' Words
This DVD of the 1989 show in Berlin is by far the best and most spectacular of any live music DVD. Though, without the entire Pink Floyd band present you think something was amiss, but the show is still an amazing and awe inspiring show of lights, visuals, and of course the Amazing sound of one of Pink Floyd's, namely Roger Waters', greatest works of music. This is something every Pink Floyd fan will enjoy and must have. The cultural tribute that Roger Waters makes in this single epic show is something to behold. The addition of other musical talents, such as Brian Adams, Sinead O'Conner, Thomas Dolby, and John Micheal pushes this show to the limit and then some. In this wonderful show, Roger Waters really shows the power of his talents as a singer, musician, and songwriter. So come on along and see the show, I know you'll enjoy that "Space Cadet Glow"!
37 Was there in 1991...
I was stationed in England in 1991 and when I heard that Roger Waters was going to this once in a lifetime concert I HAD to go.

After having the British tour bus park in the gray grungy East Berlin. I walked past the former Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate I looked to the left and the conert site was there in the former no-mans land seperating West and East Berlin. I picked up chucks of the remaining 'real' wall and headed to the concert.

I was in front of the mixing desk and this was the most imperssive visual, emotional show that I have ever seen. The TV and VHS version DO NOT CAPTURE the scale of the show. The sound was great where I was at but it must have been bad at the back since they were shouting "LOUDER, LOUDER" from back there at the beginning.

Right after the magnicifent opening song the sound system died during 'The Thin Ice' and 'Mother'. The video shows the rehearsal footage to make up for it. Thank God no one in the audience heard Cindy Laupner sing 'ABITH part 2' since we were all singing the chorus. We have to put up with her singing on the release. The scale of The Wall, imagry, teacher puppet, lighting, cartoons and the almighty pig were AWESOME! Probably the best way to experience this DVD would be to have the LARGEST screen available and a good loud sound system. Byran Adams was excellent and Van Morrisons voice was BOOMINGLY clear. His voice however sounded flat on the cd/vhs version. I believe this concert is still in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest staged rock shows with over 600 performers on stage at one time.

WHY CAN'T ROGER WATER'S MAKE UP WITH THE REST OF PINK FLOYD AND TAKE THIS MAGNICIENT SHOW ON THE ROAD AGAIN FOR EVERYONE TO EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!! For a great recording of the original Pink Floyd show get 'Is There Anyone Out There - THE WALL LIVE 1980-1981'. Awesome music, you will not be disappointed.

38 Roger Waters At his Best!
One of the greatest live events I have ever seen! I am a big Roger Waters fan and the recent news that this concert will be released on DVD soon was the best that I have heard in a long time. Although there are a few artists at this show that dont live up to the songs I thought it was a mind blowing spectacular. Don't buy the video - wait for the DVD if you are lucky enough to own a DVD system. One of the best!
39 Tear down The Wall!!! PLEASE!!!
This version of The Wall shows without a doubt that the reason the original album is so good is because of the band that played ie Pink Floyd.

This version is full of so called stars which butcher and hack their way through each song and you sit there waiting for the wall to be torn down so you can eject the video and never watch it again.

Van Morrison sounds like he is drunk when he sings Comfortably Numb slurring his speech.

Also I though Roger Waters was totally against stadium concerts which was his original influence for creating the wall even though the proceeds of the concert went to charity.

40 The Wall The Way You'll Never Get To See It
I'm sure this is similiar to the show Pink Floyd toured with for 29 performances. Nonetheless, it's the guests that it make it unique and exciting. The cut "The Tide is Turning" is truly moving and a reminder of a world that believed that the end of the cold war meant the end of our global troubles. After September 11, 2001 we know that is no longer true.
41 A moment in history
I'd have to say the concert comes out better on video and CD than it did in real life. I was lucky enough to have a great seat one of few in a crowd of 300,000 and also be lucky enough to go back stage. Maybe it was the excitement and emotion of being there in the middle of Potzdamer Platz where only 8 months before was the desolate no mans area of the old center of Berlin. Hitler's old bunker lay beneath a small mound just to the left of us, (where he decided to take his life) sitting on top was a video screen. "MMMMM" strange to sit there and see such a great concert but at the same time be overwhelmed by the history surrounding us". I took some photos of the border guards just before the concert started, they seemed as excited as we were, they all got up in a big group and waved as I took their picture, all smiles, just a little different from only a few months ago. There was another picture I managed to get backstage, it was the Mayors from east and West Berlin having dinner together for the first time, well so said the media people. So much was happening around us it was just so great to be there and to some degree the concert almost became secondary to what was there at the time. However, as Roger Waters said he would never do the "Wall" concert again until the wall came down, well he got his wish and it was just "icing on the cake". Musically it wasn't brilliant there were a number of sound problems but it didn't matter for most of us there, it was a small price to pay for the experience. The finale when those words rang out " tear down the wall" 300,000 Berliners and foreigners sang out in unison as the massive stage collapsed. It was an emotional time, especially for those of us unable to share in the joy those brave Berliners must have felt on the night of 9 November 1989. I guess this doesn't say much about the concert and Roger Waters at all but I can assure you it was absolutely fantastic, and seeing it on video was great. If u can think of all this and what it was all about at the time i.e. "The memorial fund for disaster Relief" you will appreciate it even more. NOT JUST A MUSICAL VIDEO/CD/DVD BUT A POIGNANT MOMENT IN TIME"!!!!
42 Factually one of the Greatest Live Events of all Time!
The fabulous opus of Roger Waters From Pink Floyd was already a top rock project, especially for concept themed albums. But the best just got better, although the other members were not there, it was by their own choice. Waters was quoted as saying that He and Pink Floyd would never do "The Wall" live again as long as the wall in Berlin was standing. This was a benefit concert for the Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief. The $20 per ticket concert soon became free, as hundreds of thousands of people flooded the historical site in Germany. You can watch an endless 'sea' of people having the time of their lives, as we all did watching them 're-live' tearing down the wall, accompanied by Pink Floyd music. Lead guitars blew away all expectations ("Comfortably Numb" was never better) as this unbelievable concert of incredible talent touchingly put on the best live performance in rock history. The original band members are not fueding as so many rumours indicate. This was a project of great excitement, joy, and kick-butt rock 'n' roll. Roger as an ego-maniac couldn't be farther from the truth, the fraility of his words and music indicate many insecurities, heart-breaks, and fears: much like the human experience warrants. "The Tide is Turning" is a bonus at the end (from Radio KAOS, Waters' solo project written 3 years before the event). It's a song of hope for a safer, brighter future...and the come-togetherness the song brings, speaks of world peace and Waters' wish to bury the hatchet, both privately and politically. This deserves a 10 star rating. Gilmour, Mason, and Wright fans will not be disappointed unless they are bitter (against the wishes of ALL the band members). All of the other original session members who toured and recorded with The Floyd were there. Not to disappoint!
43 All star cast joins artists in his work
Eleven years after the original release of Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Roger Waters, former bassist and vocalist of Pink Floyd, performs a one-off show of The Wall with an all star cast, featuring Sinead O'Connor, The Band, Marianne Faithful, Bryan Adams, The Scorpions, The Band, Van Morrison, and more. Filmed and recorded live in Berlin, this video documents the show as close to the original show as it can. Songs include In The Flesh?, Another Brick In The Wall Part 2, Mother, Young Lust, Hey You, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, and The Tide Is Turning, a song from Roger's solo album Radio KAOS. This is a must for anyone who never got to see The Wall live in 1980 and '81.
44 I Wished I Would've Bought It on DVD
I didn't buy this tape to see the original Pink Floyd. I bought it to see the performance of various musicians at the wall in Berlin. And I am glad I got this. But now I have a DVD player -- oops. The whole theatric ensemble in this video amazes me, and I'm glad Roger Waters shared the stage with other greats. ObComment: I find it laughable that some blue-collar drunks sing a few of the off-key choruses to the songs.

I got true enjoyment out of this one!

45 Good Effort--Medicore Execution
First of all, the sound for the concert is clearly cleaned up, as I heard this show when it hit the radio the first time. There were points in the radio show that were clearly unlistenable.

I know some Floyd purists won't like all of the guest stars, but they are not bad half the time. Bryan Adams works fairly effectivly, and Paul Carrack on Hey You is even better than the original. On the other hand, Cyndi Lauper on Another Brick 2 and Sinead and the Band really take away from some otherwise powerful songs.

The imagery of this show is spectacular, as it must have been for the original tour (do they have an entire concert for that?). It translates to video quite nicely, something which wasn't transmitted for the Momentary Lapse tour.

I'd say this is a nice one to get if you're a Floyd or Waters fan, but keep an open mind.

46 Great Concert
True there are some faults with this show, but come on folks, this was one great concert. Read the reviews and you will see how many people contradict one another. The only problem I had was Sinead was barely audible when singing "Mother". Members of "The Band" singing the mother's part was good. Roger in concert 7-13-00 at the Garden sings his part and has the female vocalists sing the mother's part. I like to hear good artists doing other people's music. The fact that so many major acts of that time showed up, shows the respect that Roger Waters gets in the music industry. I feel that they stayed as true to the music as possible. His band, The Bleeding Heart Band can play this piece as well as Pink Floyd did. Rick Difonzo plays his guitar almost exactly like Mr. Gilmour. Mr. Waters still has some of these great musicians in his band today like Graham Broad, Andy Fairweather Low and Snowy White. Rent the video and if you don't like it then you don't know a classic show even if it bites you on your behind. The Scorpions did an excellent job with "In the Flesh" both parts and I'm not a Scorpions fan. Van Morrison did a very soulful version of "Comfortably Numb". The Orchestra was superb, they probably never preformed in front of such a large audience. Any one who claims to be a Waters fan or a Pink Floyd fan should enjoy this CD and the video. I wish this would be released on DVD, then you have the best of both worlds. Any chance to see Roger Waters in concert no matter what band he has or music he chooses to perform should jump at the chance. This concert was an historical event and is a must for any collector of live shows.
47 Loss of words!
When I saw this video, I could not hit the "stop" button, nor could I hit "pause"! The Wall live in Berlin, brought me back to the Roger Water's concert I attended last week in Minneapolis. "Live in Berlin" was a show, which featured many of the things that the actual "wall" concert featured. My favorite scenes were with Roger in the room alone, as like the movie. This is a concert video in which any pink floyd fan should purchase, 4 it will not disappoint you! The video made me feel I was at the concert, the sound was excellent as well{quite surprising for being on video}, hopefuly they will release this on dvd. Enjoy, and "turn it up"!
48 BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY
This has to be the best concert video of all time. A lot of great talent is in this video. Every musical number is absolutely fantabulous! From Van Morrison's singing on "Comfortably Numb" to the building of the wall you will watch this again and again!
49 Absolutely Fabulous
Roger Waters truly made a video worthy of every Waters/Floyd fan's collection. You can feel the energy from this show while watching the tape! The music is great, and I love all the artists that make appearances throughout the show. I don't think that any of them "ruined or butchered" a song, they merely performed it with their own creative interpretation. The building of the wall is incredible, I want to see time-elapsed footage of that from the very back of the arena. My question... will it be reformatted to DVD? Now that would be excellent!
50 I was there and the video does it justice
Thank you Roger Waters for re-creating the Wall for all of us fans who never got to see it live. I flew to Berlin to see the show and the video is a great remider of the incredible show. I hope that Roger will do The Wall in the USA someday but until that happens enjoy it on video. Remember Roger is touring in the summer of 2000. I saw In The Flesh Tour 5 times last summmer and it is a truely remarkable show. Buy the video and see the show!
51 Once in a lifetime event
This concert was without doubt one of the biggest events (not just musically, but socially) to help commemorate the end of the cold war. The all-star cast did a superb job on the production of a great show. It literally will give you chills and a lump in your throat as you see "The Wall" being torn down in the very spot where the wall was torn down, amidst thousands of cheering, choked up spectators from around the globe. And if you are a Pink Floyd fan, add yet another star.
52 The best live music video ever made
Superior to the Pink Floydversion.I asked 3 friends if this version was the BEST MUSIC OF ANY KIND THEY EVER HEARD.All 3 agreed! So will you!
53 Waters is a Genius
This concert video is one of the best I've seen. I'm writing this because some guy in an earlier review said that the only thing he would change about it is he'd have Waters sing the chorus of Comfortably Numb because he thought "that guy kinda screwed it up." Well, pal, "That guy" happens to be Van Morrison, a very highly respected singer/songwriter, and probably the most creative vocalist in that show. I didn't say best. That title might well go to Carrack of Squeeze, but Morrison is arguably the most creative. Please give him and the others a listen. You are in for a treat.
54 If I had my way... I'd have all of you shot
It's decent.... not as good as the original Wall... but it's interesting to hear other people on the it. It's not a MUST buy... but for you complitests... and Wall addicts.....
55 this is good, but could be better
While the songs remain timeless, the artist that performed them on this night in Berlin, were not. The bleeding heart band performed with Roger and this sounded great, but the scorpions doing "in the flesh?"? I think not. This video is so over-indulgent in star quality of the 80's that it sometimes in places overrides the songs themselves. It would have been excellent if roger could get over the differences and just play with floyd agian. thanks
56 it was like being there again
i thought it was recorded great. i seen alot more on the video than i remembered when i was there. i show it to all my friends. thanks roger
57 it was like being there again
i thought it was recorded great. i seen alot more on the video than i remembered when i was there. i show it to all my friends. thanks roger
58 HAMMER!HAMMER!
For those of you who dont know what the guy in the chopper says he says, ""you, yes you stand still laddy!". This tape was excellent...for true floyd fans only.If you are a new comer go ahead and buy "The Wall" the cd 1st, then if you fall in love with it like the rest of us, buy this video. I do think "The Trial" was slaughtered, and the 1st In The Flesh? is it just me or should some on tell the scorpions how to dress properly?!??!"The Thin Ice" was great, but i was hoping to see Roger sing "Mother" 1 of my favortie songs from the cd. O well! What made me upset was the fact that Roger didnt sing the corus of "Comfortabley Numb"...i think that one guy kinda screwed it up. Anyways, the rest of it was perfect! You can watch it over, and over the thing that will give you goose bumps is the part when the crowd chants "Daddy's gone across the ocean" OoOoO it will give you goose bumps! I mean how would you feel if thousands of pepole were chanting you lyrics?!?!
59 1
This video is very interesting, pink floyd is my favorite group they are very good
60 Great...
I Remember a while back when my dad took me to the video store one time when I was about 5 years old. He said that we sould rent this one.. it was an accident beacuase he meant to pick out The Wall Movie but it was a good accident. When I heard the words Pink Floyd come out of his mouth I thought, "Oh NO... More of Dad's old music" It was not like that at all. The whole concert rocked, emulating almost perfectly a true Floyd concert of The Wall... Buy this movie.. you won't be dissapointed. Just keep in mind my theory... Roger Waters was Pink Floyd, the 3 "other" guys were his back up!!!
61 Another place for Waters and 'Floyd loyalists to clash...
...and forget that they once were a common constituency. It sometimes reminds me of that old beer commercial (LESS FILLING!!! TASTES GREAT!!!) Pink Floyd was one of the best fusions of hard rock and art rock ever, and it's no accident that Waters ramrodded this effort--he practically wrote every note here. But rock fans are like high school basketball fans--the teams play the actual game, but it's also the job of each team's fans to defeat the other team's fans. Kind of like a parallel contest in the bleachers. But it's great to see "The Trial" with different people playing the roles. The use of the real helicopter with a guy with a bullhorn on board. I wonder how they got the thing to show up on time? And I still can't tell what the guy's saying. Or what the crowd's chanting during the "marching hammers" part of "Waiting For the Worm". And it's here that you get the best cover song ever played; "In the Flesh", done almost as well by the Scorpions as 'Floyd did it themselves!
62 What GENIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To have only been there to partake in such an amazing production. Only someone with such creativity, as Roger Waters, could have brought the movie to stage. Not only were you there to enjoy the music but were actually able to be part of the film.
63 A moment in time that cannot be repeated.
These tens of thousands of fans, standing in no mans land, are celebrating music. Music is power over oppression. Music is freedom. This work is full of symbolism that dances with it's epoch. The end of the cold war is the perfect stage for The Wall. This setting will give you goose bumps. These fans are here to be a part of history, as much as they are here to experience great rock and roll. This video does a great job of engaging the audience. You will feel what it's like to be a part of history...a part of a great live performance. This work is a classic that is full of meaning, presented in the epochal context of the disgrace of war and the exuberance of freedom. The fact that Roger Waters can provide this much meaning, to this many people, is a tribute to his artistic vision. His influence on so many peoples lives has been an enormous positive statement in terms of his ability to reach people through his music, entertain them, and evoke emotional introspection.
64 what is the hell is this?
I have listened to pink floyd ever since I was 9 years old and all I can say about this concert is that it was just to make some cash.I also think that cyndi lauper destroyed another brick in the wall part 2 by turning it into a pop song and we all know that bryan adams wasn't even supposed to be there.so to all the loyal pink floyd fans:DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS STUPID CONCERT AND JUST SEE THE ORIGINAL FILM,WHICH IS ALOT BETTER AND NONE OF THE SONGS ARE SCREWED UP BY IDIOTIC POP STARS!!!
65 Just who the hell does he think he is?
Roger Waters has an ego on him like no one else. They were right when they called him a megalomaniac!
66 super might be belittling! a great remake! purely waters!
It's very hard to clam up ur feeling here;however, u have to realize that this is waters not floyd! please stop the comparisons! i personally think it's a great remake, well put! different!change is good! the instrumental solos r marvelously played with an extra touch! with the short time waters had to set it up! i think it's one of the best shows i have ever seen!with a nice finale! again it's waters so don't expect floyd! some people think waters is pink! in a way he is!the driving force!now he's solo! so accept him for what he is! as a pointer to all who have not seen him on stage, u don't know what ur missing! would really make u ponder who pink is?he's touring again so check him out!waters writing's definately unique unlike any other, where u'd see loads of effort put into his work!just right! as jeff beck said "waters' is a great director and song- writer" and u'll see that in berlin- the wall! check "amused to death"as well!
67 You are there!
Puts perspective upon one of the many amazing events of our times. As a long-time 'listener' of Mr. Morrison and former purveyor of modern living through chemistry, the "Comfortably Numb" piece nearly sent me 'Jonesin'. I mean 'Moon Dance' was good, but....However, after a few 'rewinds', I thoroughly enjoyed Van and his gang of troubadours. A must see, gotta get it!
68 I absolutely loved it.
Having so many good artist participating just goes to prove how much Roger Waters and Pink Floyd music is loved.
69 Excellent Concept!
Look for all of you that don't know Roger Waters and his contributions to the band, you don't know anything about Roger. This was based on his hatred of the war, the cold war, and the war that took his father. If you truly love Floyd and Roger, you will find out everything there is to find out about the band and its history, and stop making uninformed decisions.
70 I'm sorry but this sucks!!!
Every song on this album sounds like total garbage and Roger should be ashamed he ever resurrected the Wall without Dave and co. Why the hell would Roger pick such stupid guest performers? Cyndi Lauper, Sinead, Van...come'on!

If you really want a live Wall show go looking for videos from the original Wall tours. Many videos that were professionally recorded by the band themselves are out there. Depending on where you get it from, the picture quality will vary but it'll still be far more entertaining than this release.

71 I was there, AWESOME!!!
July 21st 1990. While spending a two year army tour in Germany, I was fortunate enough to make it to this concert. I would have to say that this concert was better in person than on video. Although the video was great.
72 all good points
although Floyd will never again be... Roger is still the greatest songwriter ever, and Dave is the greatest musician, This video is Rogers interpretation of something Dave and crew would see differently, but the concept was Rogers to begin with, and he did a fairly good job of portraying the feeling here. But musically it really, really needed Dave, Nick, and Rick!!!!!!
73 Better casting possible...
I know Floyd better than anyone I personally know. While Roger does great work, some of the other singers mess this up. Comfortably Numb was destroyed, in my mind, by Van M. Brian Adams, however, kicks with What Shall We Do Now? (AKA Empty Spaces). Maybe if Numb was not butchered, I would give this a 4.5 rating.
74 Better in some places than others
The movie is better in some places than in others the terrible job on comfortably numb, but one of my turns stands out as being really really good. I would buy it, but this is NOT Pink Floyd.
75 Astounding
I paid about $10.00 for this concert and while I was watching/listening I felt I should be paying $10.00 monthly payments! Technical... I love concert videos I designed and built a dedicated home theater with 26 drivers , 800 watts, soon adding another 550 watts and a lcd tv with a 17 foot screen, diagonal, need I say more! Buy this video concert the audio is perfect! Roger Waters is a genius.
76 A real classic
We think this is so great that we only bring it out in special occasions, as not to wear out the video. Please notify us if this ever comes out on DVD. We'll be able to play it all the time.
77 IT SUCKED!!
I really hated it...Van Morrison really gaked out Comfortably Numb, ..what WAS Roger Waters thinking when he 'cast' this? The Scorpions and Bryan Adams weren't bad, but all in all... a thumbs down. Floyd was at their best when they were all together. No doubt about that.
78 great stage, bad choice of musicians
the stage in the video is great and the music is still great, but having O'Conner , Lauper, the Scorpians, and anyone else sing the music of Pink Floyd is a bad idea. I'm surprised that Waters's ego allowed someone else to sing a Floyd song. I would have given the video five stars if Roger had invited even one ex-band mate but that was his ego in the way again. Great stage, great music, bad choice of singers.
79 A Great Masterpiece
Roger Waters has demonstrated once again his ability to put on a spectacular show in such little time. And proves once again that he does not need the help of the so called Pink Floyd out there right now. In fact Roger is truly the one and only Pink. SHINE ON ROGER!
80 Great New Verions of Old Classics
Sinead O'Connor doing Mother is incredible.. as is the version of Hey You.. The whole damn concert was terrific too
81 "Genius, Pure Genius!"
I have been amazed with the whole pink floyd saga since the era when this video came out. It is Roger's most comprehensive look at The Wall. The meticulous detail that went into the whole project makes for one splendid work. The massive wall that is constructed is breathtaking, and when "The Trial" scene begins and the wall comes down it'll send chills up your spine. This truly is one of the finest works of art I have ever seen. It thus proves Roger truly is the mastermind behind the Floyd. It's a must have for the avid collecter, and I would also reccomend it to anyone interested in good music in general.
82 Genius! Pure Genius!
This tape is possibly my favorite video, I've watched it four times in the past three days, it's that good! Roger Waters and the cast put on an excellent show, especially the trial sequence. If you don't like Pink Floyd, nor do you understand the sick and twisted nature of Roger Waters, then I would say this video isn't for you. All through the concert there is the construction of a huge wall, and at the end there is the symbolic tearing down of it. It's a six-star concert all the way and you'll want to watch it again and again!
83 It is a hell of a lot better than Pulse.
Roger Waters put on the best show. It is great all except for Shaned O'Conner (I think that's how you spell her name) I'm not a fan . I liked it alot better than Pulse although Pink Floyd still puts on one hell of a show, Roger Waters puts on a better one. Anyway I give it four stars opps I mean five stars. It's my dream to go to a Roger Waters concert . Hopefully with Pink Floyd, but I doubt that will ever happen. I think you should buy it...it's worth the money.
84 Would have been great IF it were Pink Floyd.......
After reading some of the reviews, I feel some of the people are confusing this video with the ORGINAL movie, "The Wall". Sad to say, although the name is ALMOST the same, no winner this time. While Roger Waters did a bang up job, the video lost a lot when performers other than the orginal group added their interpretation of specific songs. When you you buy a Rolls, you expect a Rolls and NOTHING else will do as a sub.....

Here is hoping that some of the wild rumors that Roger and crew and will be getting back together again.

Not a great video, but if you are a die hard Pink fan, it should be added to the collection

85 Three stars because this is NOT Pink Floyd.
It seems that no one has noticed that this is not Pink Floyd performing on this video, it is Roger Waters. And even though he was Floyd's bassist, singer, and lyrisist, this production shows that he would rather forget all of that. First off, save a few (very good) songs, Roger Waters did write "The Wall", and indeed it is a masterfull work of rock music concept, second only to The Who's "Tommy", but the music on this video is clearly not the music of Pink Floyd. I'm sorry, but without David Gilmour's majestic guitar playing, songs like "Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2", "Young Lust" and especially the song Gilmour penned entirely, "Comfortably Numb", are massacared. The slamming drums of Nick Mason on "In the Flesh" are sadly gone, and Richard Wright's beutiful piano on "Mother" and "One of my Turns" is repaced by harsh sounding keyboards. Forget it, this video is not "The Wall" heard on the album, nor is it "The Wall" seen on the wonderfully twisted movie version.
86 4 stars b/c it's only Roger and not the rest of the band
The show was good. I liked it, but i do have a problem with how it was filmed and the people he casted for the parts. Roger should have put his differences aside and put on the show with the rest of the band. He only had one shot to do this right and I think he screwed it up. It's not the same wihtout the other members of Floyd. Pink Floyd only sounds good with all of its members or without roger. Without Davids vocals the show sounds to depressing. I think Roger needs to put his ego behind him and admit that wihtout the rest of the band he is just a writer, nothing more. Shine on -/\=\/-
87 Music Popularity At A Raising Height =)

88 Great "stars", music as good as "Pink", a really big show!!!
This is the best music video that I have ever seen. It has a great band playing the music with many star performers singing the songs. Fabulous "Wall" being built in the background during the performance, to be torn down at the cresendo finish. New twist on some classic Floyd material. You will watch it over and over an you will turn it up!!
89 Brilliant!!
Showing off their genius for not only music but also for telling a story, The Wall is the definitive work of the world's most intelligent band. The Wall combines haunting imagery with equally haunting music to immerse the viewer in the world of protagonist Pink Floyd (Bob Geldolf). This is the seminal music movie!
90 Excellent Movie
Pink Floyd's The Wall, entertains all the emotions the world has ever known. The musical mastery of Pink Floyd ties together the very powerful images and the crucial issues which makes this one extraordinary film. If Schindler's List should be shown in schools, then so should The Wall!
91 Probably the best mix of music and video ever
Pink Floyd The Wall is an amazing story written by what is probably one of the best rock bands of all time. Pink, the antisocial protagonist of the story has a psychological wall built up by all the events in his life, which serves the purpose of keeping all others out, and causes him to disconnect more and more from the outside world. Bob Geldof is excellent as Pink, and the animation just adds even more of an eerie quality to the film. I would call it one of the most important movies of our time, and I think that everybody needs to see it.
92 Another Amazing Effort from the Boys from Britian!!!
Pink Floyd The Wall. What more can I say? It only puts all other music videos to shame, and the animation is just mind-blowing!! This movie takes at least three viewings to even start to comprehend the deep messages within it. All in all its not just another brick in the Wall....it is the most unique piece of entertainment that you will ever see. Get it NOW!
93 The wall Comes to life
A performance of the classic Pink Floyd "The Wall" done in Germany, to celebrate the taking down of the Berlin Wall, tho it contains no members of Pink Floyd, Roger< a previous Floyd member> co-wrote or wrote most of the songs on the original Wall album, an excellant live rendition, containing many american and European performers. Sinct the Floyd never released a Concert video of the Wall..THIS IS IT!! as close as you can get.
94 Harder faster and weirder. That's Roger Waters.
More than a movie, it's a cult movement. Despite the strange content of the film, you can still understand it even if you're not stoned. I rented it once (after seeing it with friends) and watched it so many times I memorized it all. Great acting job by that guy who played Pink, and it was his first movie too! Excellent, and I highly recommend it.
95 PINK FLOYD: the beautiful legend
To all who have always had an interest in Pink Floyd, or Clockwork Orange type films: this is THE BEST! This is an incredible movie. Not only is it a full-length music video for the entire two-disc album, but it's like any ordinary tragedy film; a beginning, middle, and an end. I recommend everyone to watch this with a group of friends, following the movie A Clockwork Orange-these two are bound to have you in store for one crazy weekend!
96 One mans journey from materialism to madness to resignation.
Pink Floyds "The Wall" is a masterpiece in search of anarchy. We follow the hero through his life as he struggles to know "when" to love, hate, kill, go crazy etc. He finds in the end that he is society, and the first brick to fall must be himself.
97 A mind blowing movie which will make you LOVE Pink Floyd
Whether you are an avid Pink Floyd listener or you are a complete novice in the realm of the masters, this movie will turn you into a fan. It cronicles the life of a man who basically loses touch with the outside world. When he was a young boy his father died in WWII. His mother is an over-protective woman who doesn't give him the confort he needs. The school system only serves to isolate him. As a result of this he has his first encounter with drugs which gives him the only semblance of relief from his life. When he is grown he becomes a rock superstar, but still does not find peace or satisfaction. As his life progresses 'the wall' around him grows. The wall serves as the only barrier keeping him from complete insanity. His final punishment????

This is an amazing movie which is highly under rated. Truly some of the best music by Pink Floyd (and therefor some of the best music ever created) accentuated by stuning imagery and vivid use of animation.

A definate must see!

98 A look into the life of a druged up man struggling to find..
A look into the life of a druged up man struggling to find some type of reality or meaning. It depicts the man as a boy in a time of war, then as a struggling post-adelesent, and as a hysterical hallucinating man going crazy with nothing and no one to comfert him. Great story, animation and music.

always, he was right.
[That's an interesting angle. I wonder if there are any parallels?]
