What's in the Box
793MB CRT monitor, base, power cable, attached signal cable, software kit (CD-ROM with Install Driver, Manual, MagicTuner, and Natural Color Pro), warranty information
The Samsung SyncMaster 793MB is a three-in-one 17-inch CRT monitor featuring MagicBright technology. The monitor offers three separate brightness modes optimized for a variety of PC, Internet and entertainment applications. The text mode is for traditional text-based computing, such as word processing. The Internet mode is designed for viewing streaming video or video from the Internet. The third, and brightest, entertainment mode is designed for applications such as PC-Internet gaming, multimedia content editing and watching TV (if the user's PC includes a TV tuner). The 793MB delivers an ultra-fine 0.20mm horizontal dot pitch for crisp images utilizing Samsung's proprietary MagicBright display technology, which has no visible curvature or distortion from any angle - thereby dramatically reducing glare and eyestrain. The 793MB offers a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024, a scanning frequency of 30-70 kHz horizontal and 50-160 Hz vertical, and multi-layered coating.
1 Potentially Excellent, Disappointing Quality Control
I have mixed feelings about this model. It's an eye-catcher, a welcome and very attractive addition to my desk. I love the flat CRT tube, image is more than acceptably sharp/clear.
No pushbuttons are visible on the front of the display, a mixed blessing. It does give the monitor a wonderfully clean and simple appearance, at the expense of convenience. All of the pushbuttons have been relegated to the right side, with the power button ridiculously close to the onscreen controls--I've already turned the monitor off inadvertantly several times thanks to this.
Mercifully, Samsung provides an alternate way to control user adjustments--an ingenious software program called MagicTune, When run, it provides a large onscreen display that permits adjustments such as contrast, color, and even screen geometry to be performed with simple mouse movements--a very welcome and, in this case, much needed approach.
On the negative side, brightness on two samples purchased locally is less than uniform, with the center of the screen noticeably darker than the left or right sides. Upward geometric bowing of the image is also noticeable and cannot be adjusted with the user controls, which compensate for side to side pincushion distortion only.
This being said, I'm trying to convince myself to live with the monitor, as a replacement for my aging Gateway display is badly needed. I originally tried a mid-priced LCD flat panel last week--after 90 agonizing minutes of tweaking, the image was still unacceptable, and my eyes felt as if they were being stabbed by daggers afterwards. In my opinion, a CRT display is still superior to all but the most expensive LCD monitors--and when I tilt my head in any direction, the CRT brightness/contrast remains consistent, unlike the LCD model that was auditioned last week.
In spite of the shortcomings experienced, the Samsung 793MB is acceptable overall, particularly when considering the meager choices available with CRT models these days. Now, if Samsung would only pay a bit more attention to quality control...purchase with caution, and with a full understanding of the merchant's return policy.
