Samsung's tiny, wearable Mini Yepp is the world's smallest full-featured digital player, weighing in at a mere 1.13 ounces without battery. It comes with 32 MB of built-in flash memory and features an LCD display that shows track data and current date and time.
The Mini Yepp has superb sound with a four-preset graphic equalizer and a powerful bass boost system that can enhance any musical style. The Mini Yepp also features an advanced USB port for high-speed transfer of your favorite music. USB connections are three to five times faster than those using the parallel port, and allow compatibility with both the Macintosh and PCs running Windows 98, 2000, or Me.
The popular Rio-Port digital music software is bundled with the Mini Yepp, offering a powerful yet easy-to-use system to organize your entire music collection and quickly transfer custom track combinations. The software is also CDDB-enabled, automatically retrieving artist and track information for millions of CDs (when connected to the Internet).
It comes bundled with full-length audio tracks from top recording artists, including Samantha Mumba, Monster Magnet, Blues Traveler, Queens of the Stone Age, and Black Eyed Peas.
The Samsung Mini Yepp runs on one AAA battery. It is backed by a one-year warranty.
1 w00t!
dude, i got this as a gift, without the headphones though, and i found that the baby yepp program was sooo simple. sure, the 32MB space is a blow, but if you encode in mp3PRO using dBpowerAmp Music Converter ( http://www.dbpoweramp.com ), it makes this tiny thing an awesome mp3 player. you can get a 6MB file down to 2MB with OK quality, i mean, it aint perfect 192Kbps, but it sure sounds good for a 2MB file. trust me, this is a greatt buy!
2 Fantastic
This is a great product. DO NOT buy the Nike or Rio MP3 players. They are horrible. The comments about battery life are valid. Must sure you keep plenty of batteries in your gym bag. You'll need them.
3 Best for working out
This is pretty awesome - I use it working out all the time, and the sound quality, particularly with some kickass headphones, is great. It even has some basic settings to mess with the sound type. The only difficult part is the large program - it also has the basic version of the interface program, which is much easier to use. Overall, though, this is some of the best money you can spend. I would recommend taking the battery out after every time you use it so you don't plow through AAAs -if you do that, you can get about 3 or 4 hours out of a battery.
4 Not for working out
It is a nice product with no way of carrying except in you pocket. Not good for someone who wants to use it to run and work out with.
5 ok I guess but could be great
First no off switch - that really bugs me. I know it turns off but never seems to.
Second battery life -there is none. pain to open and replace a AAA batery every time I need to use it.Come on now 3 hours batery life? whats up with that?
Uploading is not a simple drag and drop. This is a biggie. If I was to buy a mp3 player it must be drag and drop. who has time for another software product. It works, but I bought it to make my life easier but it hardly does that. But hey it was cheap for 64 megs.
6 Baby yepp egg ROCKS!
Dudes!
This is a GREAT little thing.
The 32MB can be overcome. What i did was use mp3PRO files, which are half the file size. So i have 15 songs loaded into it now, at a good sound quality. (i encoded with Musicmatch)
Also, it doesn't need an off switch, as it turns itself off after 30 sec.
The battery lasts for 4 hours or less, as it is one AAA. This thing is meant to be SMALL. If you want more horsepower, get a bigger horse.
But i love this for my purposes. It is so SMALL, and light.
I am a singer by trade, so i use it just to learn new songs in spare moments. Multi-tasking!
This is a perfect product for very light use, especially if you use mp3PRO. I already carry a PDA, cell phone, i don't want another big gadget. It's not a full use mp3 player, its for folks who want something superSMALL!
i can't wait for the next ones, when they are down to the size of a watch!
Mine paid for itself in one day! I learned 5 new tunes in my spare moments!
Yeppee!
-----------
PS: You MUST get rechargable batteries for these types of things! The recharables will last many months.
The reason it gobbles batteries is that it is ONE AAA. The reason it is one AAA is to make it small!
Its just a cool, tiny, audio player. And the sound is GOOD! I played it one my home speakers, and it sounds pretty darm good! You can't beat the price or the size!
7 Quit Whining!
I love my mini-yepp. I managed to record 17 mp3's at 64kbs with decent sound quality. You people whine too much about batteries and lack of memory. You get what you pay for.
8 not enough memory
32 megs barely does 30 minutes of music and the software is clunky, clunky, clunky. Needs a more intuitive interface...let's I want to put tracks on my portable...why should that be so hard?
9 The most bumping by the oz
Wow this thing is light!!! The sound quality is awesome too. Just keep one thing in mind before purchasing it, its for putting in your pocket!!! with the little chain clip thing, cant' really clip it to your shirt or anywhere else without the risk of it falling off.
I actually thought it was a arm strapped one. LOL don't even remember where that idea came from when ordering it. was kinda disappointed when I found out it wasn't. but not complaining, it works fine in my pockets and I love the sound quality.
10 Good enough
I got this mp3 player solely for its compact size. I wanted something small to take to the gym, and this one hit the spot just right. It has good playback quality, the software is friendly, and has a big enough memory to fit over an hour of music.
There are only two drawbacks:
1- It really goes thru batteries quick, but I have a battery charger so that's not really an issue.
2- The headphones included with the set are not the best quality, so I'm using the ones from my old walkman.
If not for those things, i would give this product a 5 stars rating.
11 perfect jogging partner
it is small and light. no moving parts, perfect for jogging
12 so compact - great!
This is a great mp3 player. The software that comes with it is easy to use, and the player itself uses only 1 AAA battery, which goes a long way. It's great to put in your front pocket while you're walking from place to place, and of course there's no skipping if you want to jog with it. A great product!
13 Samsung yp-20t Rocks!!!
This is an awesome mp3 player it so small i can slide in and out of my pocket easily. The instructions are so easy, even a first grader could install it. Its a great mp3 player, its about the size of your thumb. Its Grrrrrrrrrrr88888
14 Yepp is small in size but large in eating batteries
The samsung is by far the smallest MP3 player I have found. It can fit into that small little pocket in the front of your jeans.
If you compress the songs enough, you can fit about 9 of them on the 32 mb. But why even bother when a regular Duracel AAA battery lasts only 1.5 hours playtime. I've spent more on batteries than I did on the player. I advise you to buy something that is rechargeable.
15 Best mp3 Player
The samsung yepp is so far the best Mp3 player i have had.
Why?because the directions are easy to follow i also like the way you can read songs from a cd the size was amazing as well as its weight i think the software was great that is why this is the best Mp3.
16 Good size, good sound, great value
THE GOODS:
-Very small, about the size of an egg.
-Light enough (1.13oz) to run with without having it bounce around in your pocket.
-Like all MP3 players, it won't skip, shaken or stirred.
-Very durable.
-Nice-quality earphones.
-Crisp LCD.
THE BADS:
-Non-expandable or upgradeable; only plays MP3s.
-Cumbersome computer software.
-Only three buttons on player; basic functions like volume, turning off, and EQ switching takes some getting use to.
OVERALL: Well worth the cost, and a great player to begin with. The 32MB model can hold about 6-8 songs, but if you are looking for more memory, try the 64MB model, which is obviously a bit more expensive. The only real downside to the Mini-Yepp is that its memory cannot be expanded or its software upgraded. All in all, I would highly recommend this player.
17 Good Player Yepp but Audio Manager stinks
The version of the Audio manager (3.4.x) that comes with this player stinks. Get this. You can not drag and drop songs onto the player itself. You have to drap songs into a playlist and then from there onto another list before copying it to the player. I suggest not installing the Audio Manager software that comes with this player but rather get the older version of the Audio Manager from rioport.com. It a LITTLE BIT better. Still no drag and drop onto the player itself though but runs a lot better.
The player itselves is nice. Small, light and compact. I run so it's good, not perfect though. Like it so darn small that there no room for external memory. Alright enough b-tching. luck.
18 nice player for first time user
i purchased this player about 2 weeks ago and i love it. it was a difficult decision because i knew nothing about mp3 let alone how to "download" one. it was very easy to learn(once i over came the fear of the damn thing and took it out of the box)and operate. yes, it eat batteries like i eat cookies but hey. it does come w/ a clasp that is very nice. i found the samsung people very helpful at the 1-800 number. it is very nice to be able to run on the trendmil w/out having your music skip. yes, it does hold b/w 6-7 songs.
19 Conquering the Battery Problem
I just pulled my mini Yepp out of the packaging yesterday and couldn't believe how small this thing is. The sound quality is excellent. The memory is a limitation as others have noted. I took it apart and found that they have an extra set of pads on the board right next to the existing NAND Flash - its all hooked up and ready to be populated. I think I heard they have a 64mB version out now (maybe I'll try upgrading mine?). The battery life is also a bit of a limitation, but since it only burns one battery at a time, its not too bad. I measured the current at 175mA with the volume cranked all the way up. That's around 1/4 Watt which seems OK, but it's a lot of current to draw from an alkaline battery (they aren't very efficient in high current applications). I'm using rechargeable NiMh batteries in mine and they last about 2.5-3 hours. These are good NiMh batteries from Maha\Powerex (650mAh AAA) which I bought for about $2.50 per cell. I also bought a good rapid charger for them. Using these batteries, the cost of music is less than a penny an hour compared with about $.25/hr using alkaline batteries.
20 good enough
It's a really nice player so far it's great, it is really small. The bad thing is it should come with a belt clip or arm strap, it comes with a chain instead (like the one for a pager). If battery is an issue for you than this is not the player for you. the software is average. easy to rip songs off your CD and organize your collection of mp3s, very annoying message asking for upgrade the software though. Overall this is a good player with a reasonable price. If you are looking for a player for short trips only this is the one, but long trips i would still recommend an upgradable or a player with more memory. One additional note, i bought Energizer e2 Titanium Technology batteries for my mp3 player and it didn't work, my mp3 player only take certain brand of batteries.
21 NIIIICE
Any one who dosent have a mp3 player and wants one, but is worried about the price. This is the one for you! now it only holds up to 8 songs, but it is light and it looks very good. My suggestion is if your new and you want a MP3 player get this one I know cuz this is my first one
22 fine for six songs
the samsung has attractive features and a great look. It is very small and easily hidable, so are the songs. It holds barely six songs, not enough for 1/4 of a circuit at the gym.
23 Very Good Player
This MP3 player has very good sound quaility and it only costs around $90-$100. The bad thing is that the player zaps your battery life(4 hours in play mode, 30 days in clock mode). If you use this player constantly, you better had loads of extra cash.
24 Good Player With Limitations
I recently bought this player and got exactly what I expected. The unit is very small and lightweight and is pretty easy to operate. The sound is great and it's just a good piece of technology. As just about everyone else has mentioned in their reviews, there are limitations that may be difficult for some people to deal with. This player is a battery eater. I have been getting about 3 hours total listening time before replacing the battery. This can get to be a bit much money-wise. Also the 32 MB memory is not quite enough. You can figure that you'll only get about 30 minutes (or less depending on the sound quality of the MP3 files) of music. Basically I would say it's great to take jogging etc. This is what I use it for and uploading different songs every day is very easy. For travel or other situations where listening to the same 6 or 7 songs over and over and replacing the battery every few hours will drive you crazy, I'd suggest one of the other units.
25 MP3 upgrade from 32MB to 64MB - from Mini-Yeep to Techno Yee
Hey, I like this gadget so much, I bought it as a birthday gift for myself. After a few minutes all was installed, the great track "Take This Waltz" ... via USP cable (included) from PC to PORTABLE transfered, the high quality ear phones (included) in my ears - great sound! Not so great is the AAA battery (one included) lifetime. First I thought it could be the included battery which may be old - but new AAA batteries (good brand) made it not longer. So, having AAA batteries available is a must. After the first week, my need for having my favored sounds in my Mini-Yepp increased and so the 32 MB memory got 'eaten-up' in a hurry. Finally I decided to put the Mini-Yeep on Amazon Marketplace and purchased the Samsung Techno Yepp 64 MB Digital Audio Player (ASIN B000059RAB). A good deal? Yes, at least I think so: I got some experience with MP3 - I had much fun with this "gem" and will have even more with the "Techno" which can be expanded with memory cards. ...
26 Terrific for the Price
For the price, this is a great little unit with good sound. It was easy to setup the software and using the USB Port downloading files was a snap. If your looking for a basic portable MP3 player, you can't go wrong with this unit. The unit is very small and lightweight which makes it perfect for jogging. The only drawback I see is that you're stuck with the 32 Mbyte of memory which let's you store approximately 30 mins of music.
27 Wait for the 64 mb version...
I read the reviews here of the 32 mb version and decided to wait for the 64, which I just purchased. I am glad that I made that choice. Although the battery on this player is small (AAA), one should realize that the compromise to having such a small unit is indeed a small battery. To those who have reviewed the 32 unit and faced installation problems, it should be noted that the software needs to be installed on computer PRIOR to attaching the unit for the first time to the USB port. If done in this order, Windows 98+ can then begin making its search for the already installed driver. If you try the other way around, installation can be very frustrating. The drag-and-drop feature of the software works perfectly adequately. Just take your MP3s from whatever folder you have them stored in on PC and click and drag them into the software provided by Samsung. For its size and price, I think this player is very well designed. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of the "Mode" switching system on the player which is designed in favor of economy of buttons to press, but works very well once you figure it out. I recommend this player to those who want small size, and reasonable price. In my view, many of the other players available are simply too highly priced, the Sony line being chief among guilty parties.
28 Great Value
A great player if you're looking for something small and lightweight. Only one complaint -- no holder for when you're using it during exercise or walking (a belt clip would be a nice accessory SAMSUNG!!!). On the pro side the USB connection provides fast download of music from my computer; the YEPP is PC or MAC compatible; the software is super easy to use; and the sound is impressive (the four EQ presets provide a nice range of choices). All in all a great value for the money.
29 Well worth it
I bought this mp3 player after searching the net for hours. I weighed the pros (small/not too expensive) vs the cons (only 32 mb memory non-expandable. Fortunatly for me the pros won out. The yepp is smaller than a pager and just as light as one. Although the memory is only 32 I managed to record just over an hour on it at the lowest compression setting (64kbps). If you are looking for something to go jogging or work out with this is the one.
30 Good choice for first timers
At [price], I thought this would be a good way to give MP3's a try. I've only had this for a few days, but so far, I'm very impressed. Sound quality is great and it's unbelievably small.
I use both Macs and PC's. The bundled software works well on both. The Mac package lets me upload songs to my Mac, but the PC package doesn't. Dunno why. Don't count on Samsung's web page to give you much by way of tech support - it's pretty weak.
I plan to use this for my 30 minute workouts, so the 32MB capacity shouldn't be much of an issue. However, I've got two minor glitches: 1) I haven't figured out how I'm gonna hold it. There's no belt clip, so unless I rig something up, I'll have to hold it in my hand. Its small size and smooth shape makes me worry that, being the klutz that I am, I might drop it. B) It would be great if Samsung added a "key lock" function (like the one on my Sony walkman) that would prevent unintended button pushing while I'm running.
If I get heavily into MP3's, I suspect I'd go buy a more deluxe player and hand this down to the kids. In the meantime, [price] is a cheap way to get started. Love it!
P.S. Downloading MP3's is a WHOLE LOT better with a cable/DSL connection.
31 I say yep for this Mini-Yepp!
I found out about this MP3 Player in the May 21, 2001 issue of Newsweek Magazine (Cyberscope, Page 12). Just 1.4 x 2.7 inches, the sound is decent, no skips, runs on a AAA battery, ... . It also comes with a one year warranty! Yes, I realize you get what you pay for, but this is a neat little MP3 player...!
32 Small but what I need
I wanted a non bulky mp-3 device. I have to restrict my toy spending and this was the right price! True, not a whole of room but when I work out I want non skipping quality music and this did the trick. The actual size is smaller than the pager I have to carry. Simple to use and pre-loaded so I had it running within a minute of being out of the box. I kind of wish the holder was an arm band.
33 Excellent
Pros:
Great software Excellent support even in Win ME Great feel to the device USB Looks great
Cons:
You are going to have to wait at least 1 day to get hold of this amazing piece of technology :)
A Must Buy!!
34 Infuriatingly (but understandably) short battery life, but..
I've been using the Mini-Yepp* for about three weeks so far, and I'm reasonably happy with the purchase. First off, it's tiny (small enough to be mistaken for a Tamagotchi?...) and it's relatively cheap.
While it only supports the mp3 format (no proprietary formats like wma or atrac3), it seems to support a range of bitrates (I've tried 64kbps - 256kbps) as well as vbr-encoded files (I prefer these high-compression variable bitrate files for their small size).
The sound quality is remarkably adequate, especially for a player that's small enough to lose with your pocket change (hasn't happened to me just yet, thank goodness), and its built-in equalizer adds enough "oomph," although you're not going to see any audiophiles raving about it anytime soon.
The biggest drawback with the Mini-Yepp is its short battery life. The fact that this unit is so small that it uses a single AAA battery should be a clue. I'd say I've been averaging about 2.5 hours of active use per battery, although I'm in the process of gauging NiMH rechargeables in this unit. I'd suspect using alkalines to support your mp3 habit on the Mini-Yepp may turn out to be a costly experience.
Another almost equally annoying feature of this unit is its miniscule memory capacity. At 128kbps (or 55% vbr in Musicmatch, although I've had to do some mp3 tag repair with these files before I could use them - something to do with Freuhaufer and Xing encoder/decoder compatibility issues), you're going to pack about a half-hour into this unit. And it's fine if you're going to use the Mini-Yepp as a workout companion (which I do), and if you work out about 30 minutes at a time (which I also do). However, if you're planning a transatlantic flight, you may want to choose something else, lest you end up with the mp3 equivalent of cabin fever.
From what I've read, there is supposedly a 64mb version of the Mini-Yepp in the works, but I'll believe it when I see it. I suspect while that model will have the obvious advantage of increased memory, the battery life will still be an issue.
* Has someone at Samsung been watching 'Austin Powers' a bit too much of late? The original name of this product was Baby Yepp (presumably after Casio's Baby-G), but by the time this hit the shelves, there was a name change.
