The MultiMediaCard is designed to provide flexible storage for today's digital devices. The card weighs less than two grams and is the size of a postage stamp. The small size of the MultiMediaCard allows digital device product manufacturers the ability to continuously design small, portable devices. The MultiMediaCard has been designed into products that include digital music players, digital camcorders, cellular phones and global positioning systems (GPS).

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The SanDisk 128MB MultiMediaCard, like most 128MB cards, will store on average 142 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 106 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 64 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 51 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 40 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

2 Solid, Older Memory Card
The new wave of compact memory technology is being led by the Secure Digital (SD) Memory Cards. Supposedly, they have tremendous memory quality while also enabling secure protection of stored data. Yet, being the newer technology, they are also more expensive. For my purposes, I just needed a card to expand the memory of my MP3 player. So, I was more than content to go with the SD's predecessor, the MultiMediaCard (MMC). The MMC has the exact same physical design and can be used in all the same devices as the SD. Its only negative is that it is more primitive technology. It has served my needs quite well. There have been no compatibility issues and the integrity of the stored data has been quite good. I may eventually move up to the SD card, but for now, I have nothing but praise for the MMC.
