CompactFlash, which weighs a half ounce and is the size of a matchbook, is an ultrasmall, removable data storage system that is ideal for use with digital cameras and handheld PCs.
1 Definitely not overkill! I bought two!
Even for a 3.34 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera (e.g. Nikon 990), this 96MB card isn't overkill, considering when each image is about 1MB at 2048x1536 at highest JPEG quality. Uncompressed TIFF files are 9MB _each_, although they're painfully slow to save. So, I bought two, and I'm thinking about getting a third one for longer trips.
2 Take Two, they're small (and geting smaller)
I now have 3 SanDisk CF cards that I use between digital cameras and a Windows Pocket PC. The oldest (15 MB) is well over 4 years old and I've found them all to be reliable and worked in a broad variety of cameras, readers, and PC Card laptops.
With my 2 Mpixel camera set to uncompressed TIFF, each shot takes 5MB, so I bought a second 96MB card.
Complaints? make 'em cheaper and faster (a 5MB write takes a l-o-n-g time).
3 no such thing as too much memory
is there such a thing as too much memory? i think not. this product deserves more than one star. san disk has a great reputation and i've never had problems with any of their flash memory. if you don't need that much memory, get a smaller capacity card.
4 Overkill? Not!
Uh, I think anyone who's reasonably up-to-date with today's digicams knows that a 96MB CF card can be filled easily. Assuming each 1600x1200 shot taken with a 2 megapixer occupies 1MB of memory, you will only be able to get 96 pictures on the card. With today's 3 megapixers, it just makes it seem THAT much smaller. That's why we have the 340MB microdrive nowadays. 1GB storage media the size of a CF or memory stick already exists. Anyone who claims that they have trouble filling up a 96MB card on a vacation must be using a 300,000 pixel, first-generation digicam.
5 OVERKILL
The item was absolutely positively wonderful, except for onehorrid flaw, its tooooooooooo darn big, i went on vacation and tookpictures every time i got a chance for an entire month, WITHOUT changing the card, and when i got home i still had 25 megs left over, i easily got 500 super-high res shots out of it and four times that in normal quality. its just a waste unless your pre-occupied with size(hmm sounds familiar)
