It's hard to believe, but for the first three seasons nobody really knew that
Seinfeldwas about, well, you know. It wasn't until season 4--unleashed here in a four-disc set that's equal in scope, quality, and quantity of bonus material to its predecessors--that the show really became something. In a series which can claim every installment as classic, the two-parter on disc 1 titled "The Pitch/The Ticket" truly stands out as a defining episode and, in retrospect, marked
Seinfeld 4 as the breakthrough season. It's the one where (fake) NBC executives express their interest in working with Jerry Seinfeld on a TV show, then moves to the who's-on-first shtick of George successfully pitching Jerry on creating "a show about nothing." Scattered throughout the discs in commentaries by cast and creators and in numerous "Inside Look" documentaries, nearly everyone expresses some anxiety about the season having a story "arc" depicting Jerry and his "real" life becoming a sitcom. The show had been only marginally successful up to that point anyway, and with the edict, "no hugging, no learning," still in place, maybe messing with nothing was a bad idea. What makes the arc so arch is the self-reflexive way it details the reality of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David coming up with the concept and pitching it to (real) NBC executives as a show that really was about, well, you know. In one of the many informally informative interview segments, Jerry remembers hitting a stride during this time when a lot of crazy ideas started to make sense. "Everything was just a wild guess," he says, "and it takes a while to get confident that you're guessing pretty good. I think sometime in season 4 we realized we were guessing pretty good." Oh, that we could all be so good at nothing.
Season 4 also gave us the episodes "The Bubble Boy" ("He lives in a bubble!"), "The Pick" ("There was no pick!"), and, perhaps most memorably, "The Contest." Recalling how nervous he thought NBC might be about a show based on how long a person can remain--ahem--master of his domain, Larry David says that he kept the idea hidden for a long time. He may have had NBC sweating, but the episode goes by without anyone uttering the word that it's really about. The curmudgeonly David also observes that another famous season 4 episode, "The Outing," only made it on the air due to a network "note" about making sure it wouldn't be offensive to homosexuals. Hence we have the addition of another standard to the Seinfeld lexicon of American pop culture: "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" Not only wasn't there anything wrong with it, the episode won a GLAAD Media Award. Season 4 also brought Seinfeldits first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Stay tuned for season 5 (and a move to the coveted Thursday-at-9 slot) when the volcano we now know was always brewing really blew its comedic top. --Ted Fry

1 Just keeps getting better!
I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the 4th season. Besides the incredible "Master of One's Domain" episode, we see the Junior Mint, the Pick (with Elaine's hilarious breakdown in Coach class mirrored by Jerry's over-the-top pampering in 1st Class), so many great lines, moments, episodes. I, for one, did not see any decline in the show over the years -- except for the heartily disappointing final episode (the one time I would have liked to see a bit of shmaltz), the later episodes with Little Jerry Seinfeld the fighting rooster, George's "jerk store" fiasco, Elaine's reaction to the book that had been in the bathroom, Puddy's calm assurance that Elaine is going to hell; so many good ones from the later years, as well.
As far as the DVD's go, the packaging is superb, the audio and video are sparkling. The "Notes About Nothing" feature (think of VH1's "Pop-Up Video" concept) is awesome -- I've learned a lot of interesting tidbits about the show...I would have never guessed the song George is humming in "The Limo" is from Fiddler on the Roof -- probably not the 1st choice of entertainment for a neo-Nazi!!
Kudos as well to the Seinfeld crew for getting the DVDs released relatively quickly -- it did take quite a while to get started, but sucessive sets have been put out in a timely manner (unlike SOME *cough-Simpsons-cough*).
Looking forward to Seasons 5 through 9....
2 some people are jerks
I think that the jerk that wrote the review earlier about Seinfeld needs to grow up and get a life. What is the purpose of bashing the show like that? If you don't like the show that is fine, but why write a review purely mocking the show when it really has nothing to do with the DVD set at all, but rather your own ignorance and stupidity? Oh well, I suppose that you will evemtually grow up and move out of your parents basement and become some sort of vagrant on the streets. Good luck!
3 season 4 was-is the absolute best of all!
hilarious, charming, superb performances, etc. seasons 1,2 & 3 were merely warm ups for what was to happen in magnificent 4! the show, the cast really came into their own here, and the results were totally superb! hilarious from start to hilarious finish, this was THE SEASON to savor, and now within 2 weeks, we will all be savoring, rewatching, laughing hysterically about the season of NOTHING'. this is more than any other collection, the greatest collection of SEINFELD ever! do not dare pass this one up-it is an instant classic, and one season that will probably sell a gazillion copies. pure laughter, truly!
4 Sucked at the beginning, cheesy by the end, but...
...what a great run during the middle of the series!
Season 4 was probably the best overall season of Seinfeld. Seasons One and Two were not all that good; Three had its moments but was still overall pretty average. Four, Five, and Six were great.
The first few seasons it seems they were still tinkering around trying to find the right formula for the show. By the end, the show had become so successful the writers got lazy and you had some great moments but overall the series felt pretty tired.
The 4th Season Set includes some of the best small screen moments I have ever seen. My personal favorite, Micheal Richards, is in top form throughout the season. This is evident in the thunderous applause he received nearly every time he burst through Jerry's door. In fact, I feel he really stole the show in numerous episodes. By the end of the show's run, Richards had been relegated to some mediocre slapstick routines, but here his physical comedic genius really shines through. Julia Dreyfuss and Jason Alexander did some of their best work during this season as well.
If you're thinking about Seinfeld on DVD, this is the season to get, folks!
5 Seinfeld -- one of the best shows.
It is one of the best TV shows ever produced. It has received the award for the Most funniest TV show. It is no doubt the funniest show. I wish I get all the shows on DVD.
6 Only morons worship at the Seinfeld altar
Seinfeld is without question the worst television show ever produced because it is not funny. It couldn't be funny if it tried. The stupid rubberband bass lines heard throughout the show that served as segues are some of the dumbest, idiotic parts of the show. All of the actors are horrible. They couldn't entertain anyone for their lives. This is a prime example of the human brain's inability to discern what is funny and what is not. Seinfeld has never - not ONCE - said or done anything worth remembering. It would be awesome if someone working in the vaults where the episode masters are kept would walk in there and mutilate every single inch of film they were shot on. That would serve humanity in the greatest way imaginable.
7 Every installment a classic???
From the Amazon review, "In a series which can claim every installment as classic...".
Uh, not hardly. THERE, you see a perfect example of the dumb overkill for Seinfeld. It's really silly, sillier than the show itself.
Seinfeld certainly isn't the greatest show ever. Seinfeld is a fun show, especially this season here (4), but it certainly had it's flaws and bad episodes (and seasons and a horrible series finale) along the way of it's total run.
Not in this season here, though, because the show really hit it's peak here as far as consistency goes. This is the one to get for those that have never seen the show, or if you're just looking to get one season of Seinfeld for your collection.
8 Remastered in HD
I think one of the most interesting facts here is that they are remastering this season in HD. I'm not sure if that means widescreen or not, but for those of us with an HD TV this is pretty cool. I dont think I've seen any other TV show released in HD.
9 Why people?
Why do people love this show? It's ok, but thats it. Cheers The Complete Fifth Season, Diane's last season,is being released the same day as Seinfelds fourth season, but you don't hear anything about the Cheers DVD's. Only Seinfeld. In my opinion, Cheers is a far superior show then Seinfeld, it lasted longer,(Cheers 11 seasons Seinfeld 9) and won many more Emmy's(Cheers 28,Seinfeld 10),and the series finale of Cheers is the second, only behind the finale of M*A*S*H,as the most watched show for an episodic sitcom of all time. Its true. Look it up. But Seinfeld gets all the publicity. That's wrong. I know most people won't agree with me, but whatever.
10 The Classic Seinfeld Episodes Begin
I have been a long time Seinfeld fan, I still miss Thursday nights at 9:00 from time to time. However, I myself did not discover Seinfeld until Season 4. I had heard of the show but it was before "everyone" started watching it. So one night I was channel surfing and I came across the episode "The Pick" and I still remember laughing hystericaly throughout that entire episode and I still do everytime I see it, and I have been a huge Seinfeld fan ever since then.
I was apparently not the only one that discovered Seinfeld during Season 4, because this is the season when it finally entered the top 25 in the ratings, and this was the season when it finally started developing the huge fan based that it deserved.
Season 4 gave Seinfeld fans such classic episodes as "The Pick", "The Contest", "The Outing", "The Bubble Boy" and many more. These particular episodes were foundations to some of the other great ones to come in the later seasons. By season 4 the characters were fully developed, and the jokes and humor that Seinfeld possesed through its nine year history was at its most superb quality at that particular time.
For the occasional Seinfeld fan that has maybe just started watching it since its been in syndication then this is the Season I would recommend starting with. Episodes such as "The Pick" just can't be ignored as one of the greatest ever, and with Season 4 you will enjoy such hysterical moments througout the entire DVD.
11 My Mother Caught Me
This is perhaps the best season of this phenomenally funny series, and it includes possibly my favorite episode of all time: "The Contest", where George is caught...you know....plus the other hilarious episode "The Junior Mint", which introduces both the underrated candy ("It's chocolate, it's peppermint, it's delicious...It's very refreshing!") as a medical marvel and of course, Mulva. For any Seinfeld fan this is a must, and for newcomers (No soup for you!) this is exactly where you should start!
12 boxset or season at a time
I recently bought the Season 1-3 Box set, Would it be best to wait for the next boxset, rather than buying this?
13 THANK GOD!!! 4 SEASON IN 6 MONTHS!!! WEVE BEEN BLESSED!!!
This show is one of the best shows that has ever been on television, and the DVD sets are AMAZING!! They are completley packed with awesome bonus features. The behind the scenes segments for each episode are always so interseting. They have tons of deleted scenes, Commentary, and Notes about Nothing. Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer definently have taken their place in TV history. And this is one of the funniest seasons yet. This season includes some of the fan's most favorite episodes. The Bubble Boy, and The Junior Mint "Who does'nt like a Junior Mint, it Chocolate and a Mint" One of the funnist seasons of the funniest shows!
14 A unique, original TV show about nothing...
The preeminent show of the 1990's decade, Seinfeld grew from an idea of "a show about nothing" into a sacred pop culture icon - not that there's anything wrong with that.
The show follows the life of comedian Jerry Seinfeld and the exploits of his "short, quirky, bald guy" best friend, George Costanza (Jason Alexander), Jerry's neurotic neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), and Jerry's ex-girlfriend Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Through the years, they're joined by a loveable cast of characters that includes Newman, Uncle Leo, the Soup Nazi, Frank and Estelle Costanza, the Bubble Boy, and countless others...
The Seinfeld (Season 4) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Jerry asks George to accompany him on a trip to Los Angeles where he'll be appearing on The Tonight Show. While in Hollywood, the two attempt to track down Kramer who recently moved there to become a star. But the trip goes awry when hotel maid Lupe can't grasp the concept of George's preferred bed tuck, Jerry loses his Tonight Show material, and Kramer is fingered by local police as the prime suspect in the "smog strangler" killings... Other notable episodes from Season 4 include "The Bubble Boy" in which George incurs the wrath of an entire township following his argument over a Trivial Pursuit question with a local handicapped icon who (for medical reasons) lives in a bubble, and "The Contest" (based on a real life Larry David experience) in which Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine place a wager on who can practice self-denial the longest... "The Junior Mint" and "The Handicap Spot" round out a year that is arguably the best season in Seinfeld's hilarious nine-year run...
Below is a list of episodes included on the Seinfeld (Season 4) DVD:
Episode 41 (The Trip: Part 1)
Episode 42 (The Trip: Part 2)
Episode 43 (The Pitch)
Episode 44 (The Ticket)

The DVD Report
15 Really very fine and good...
Yes, these people are shallow and self centered, but the show never portrays these things in a positive light. In fact, we are discouraged to be just like them. Seinfeld remains the funniest show on television. Season Four is just another example of how good the show really was once it found its ground and established the characters. Thumbs up! Can't wait for this to come out.
16 UGH. HERE THEY COME AGAIN. . .
If smug, insufferable actors playing smug, insufferable people is your thing, then by all means help yourself to this steaming, redolent pile of misanthropic yuppie dung. Give me KING OF THE HILL and THE SIMPSONS: they may be two-dimensional, but at least they're funny. And unlike SEINFELD, both of them have a heart.
17 A very mixed bag of a season.
The fourth season was when "Seinfeld" hit its stride, and yet, stumbled an equal number of times. With "The Outing", "The Contest", and other such classics, no one can completely write off this season. Yet, one of the weakest ideas of the whole series....that Jerry and George get a sitcom offer from NBC, which led to another weak idea....George having a full-time girlfriend....make this season anything but a complete winner.
Hopefully Sony does this season as well as they did their first two sets, which had great pictures, wonderful extras, and cut absolutely no corners.
18 why resist?
I've never been a fan of Seinfeld's first two seasons, nor its show-about-something disastrous final two seasons. But is the fourth season the best season in the history of comedic television? That's quite a title to have to carry around with you, but one look at that episode list will have you convinced it's true. Think about it: being the master of your own domain. Moops. Crazy Joe Devola. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The ethics of a pick vs. a scratch. The Nip. "They're real and they're spectacular." It's not just that these episodes are cultural remnants engrained in pop culture even by people too young to remember them firsthand, it's that they remain a triumph of humor at its purest, of smart, unflinching observation about the words and customs of our everyday life - it's the year that put substance into the "nothing" of Seinfeld, and seemed to single-handedly revive the sitcom format. And there's also that it's still funny as hell.
19 The Best Show In History of Mankind
Season Four contains many of the classic episodes like "The Contest" and "The Junior Mint". You will be rolling on the floor laughing, guaranteed.
20 PICK UP THIS SEASON
In the 1990's, there was no show that could compare to Seinfeld and season 4 may be the best season in the shows 9 season history. The season starts off with a bang with the Trip parts 1 and 2. These episodes take place in Los Angeles with Jerry and George going to the Tonight Show. The next episode is "The Pitch" where Jerry and George try to sell their pilot to NBC. In this episode, we are first introduced to Susan, who will become a regular in upcoming seasons. Kramer gives Newman an alibi in "The Ticket". Julia Louis Dreyfus then returns in the next episode, "The Wallet". The episodes that highlight the Seinfeld series are in the rest of the season. First up is "The Bubble Boy" which is where George gets into a fight with a boy in a plastic bubble over a trivial pursuit question. "I'm sorry the correct answer is Moops" becomes a famous line. A few episodes later is the episode that changed television forever. "The Contest" won the Seinfeld show awards and was voted by many fans as the funniest show in their history. "The Outing" takes the success of "The Contest" and makes this episode another classic. Jerry, George, and Elaine are in the coffee shop when they notice a woman eavesdropping. Elaine decides to have a little fun with her and says that Jerry and George are gay. The woman happens to be a reporter doing a story on Jerry. The show was on a roll as they shoot and air "The Junior Mint". This will undoubtedly go down as a classic for years to come. While watching surgery be performed, Kramer and Jerry, fighting over a junior mint drop it into a patient. "Into the patient". This season is one to own Seinfeld fans.
21 Seinfeld is just unbelievable
I have just seen the first few episodes of the Fourth Season and all I can say is: "Wow". P.S the Season is still being run in our TV screens in this part of the world "South Africa". Since my family and I became Seinfeld fanatics a few years ago, we never get tired of watching the same episode over and over again (all episodes for that matter). But one thing for sure is that the suspense (of the production of all other remainig seasons) is killing us, we really can't wait.
I have two interesting questions for the producers of the show, especially Jerry: (1) what keeps the DVD production of the seasons so long? and (2) I have always wondered, although it is too late a question to ask: how come the show came to an end whereas it is such a hit, second to none whatsoever?
Seinfeld rocks and my message to Jerry and company is: "it is not too late to regroup and give your fans what they deserve" Comedy is not comedy without Seinfeld.
22 Pretty good season Im still waiting for the beltless trenchc
Im still waiting for the 2 part Beltless trenchcoat episode. Its the best episode but I dont know what season it was.
23 IF I COULD HAVE ONLY ONE SEASON, THIS WOULD BE IT!
I'm not one of those Seinfeld fans who saw a big decline in the show as the season's came and went. I loved the final couple of seasons just as much as any. Only the first season, where they were still working with the formula to get it right, was a bit weak. That said, if I was on a desert Island and could have only one season of Seinfeld to own and watch, it would be season four. It not only had many great episodes but it had many that would go down as classics, not only of Seinfeld, but all-time sit-com classics.
There are so many great episodes from season four but here are my favorites:
"The Wallet" & "The Watch" this was a two-parter as Jerry's parents come to town so Morty can see a back specialist. Morty is up in arms when he thinks his wallet is stolen in the doctor's office. Meanwhile Unlce Leo finds a watch that Jerry threw in the trash, a watch his parents gave him and Jerry tries to buy it back.
"The Bubble Boy" Jerry, Elaine, George and Susan are going up to Susan's father's cabin. They are asked to see a local fan named "the bubble boy" who lives in a plastic bubble ala John Travolta in the movie. George gets there first and plays a game of Trivial Pursuit with the bubble boy and they get into a fight. Kramer accidently burns down the cabin. One of the all-time great episodes!
"The Contest" Maybe the greatest episode ever...George is caught pleasuring himself by his mother who throws out her back and lands in the hospital. George, jerry, Kramer and Elaine all bet to see who can go the longest without doing...that...Later appearing on David On the Letterman show, Julia Louis-Dreyfus said that the network censors would not allow them to say "masturbation".
"The Pick" Kramer takes a picture of Elaine for her Christmas card. After she sends the picture out to everyone, including her nephew, they notice that her nipple was exposed! Jerry's girlfriend thinks she caught him picking her nose.
"The Visa" Kramer punches Mickey Mantle at a baseball fantasy camp, Babu's visa expires and he is deported. Kramer's explanation of the fight with Mantle is the highlight.
"The Outing" this would feature one of the all-time great Seinfeld lines "Not that there is anything wrong with that" when a college newspaper reporter mistakenly thinks jerry and George are a gay couple.
"The Implant" Jerry dumps his girlfriend (Terry hatcher) when Elaine tells him that her breasts are fake. Kramer thinks he sees Salman Rushdie the author, in a sauna and George gets into a fight at his girlfriend's Aunt's funeral because he 'double-dipped' a chip.
"The Junior Mint" Jerry can't remember the name of his girlfriend, only that it rhymes with the word for a female body part. Jerry and Kramer watch an operation and accidently toss a junior mint into the surgical opening.
"The Smelly Car" a Valet parker leaves a strong body odor in Jerry's car. Jerry tries everything to get the smell out and eventually gives the car away.
"The Pilot" George & Jerry's show is greenlighted to have a pilot produced and they interview prosective "kramers, Georges, and Elaines". Elaine finds Morty's wallet...missing since that early episode, in Jerry's Couch.
This season really had it all. I would have to say that there really was not one bad episode in the entire season. This group of talented actors was on their game all season and took the sitcom to incedible heights. There simply has been nothing since that has come close to matching Seinfeld's brilliance.
24 THIS IS THE ONE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!
Just for the Junior Mint episode alone, but the contest to see who can go the longest without, you know, is fabulous. I LOVE George's mother; how I love seeing her in her hospital bed, berating him for yet another transgression, (What is it with you; who are you; I don't know you any more!") and George's reaction to his mother's next door neighbor-patient when she gets a spongebath is hilarious (and in another show, a young guy gets a spongebath, equally hilarious), and of course, the Trip...IMHO, George's parents are one of the best aspects of this fantastiuc show; I enjoy Jerry's parents also, his father at the doctor's office when he is fillling out the patient information form and gets to the STD part is a riot; he says "That's it! They got my name and my phone number; that's it!" And later in the room where he waits for the doctor when he thinks someone stole his wallet...well, you just have to see it. I was so upset when Seinfeld went off the air, but now I can watch these classics over and over and over again whenever I want and it really doesn't get any better than that. And the peripheral characters are so good you want them to be a regular part of the show; e.g, the grumpy old man Jerry volunteered to take care of; the Rabbi in Elaine's building; George Steinbrenner; Tim Whatley, the weird dentist; Elaine's roommate; and my favorite of all, Jimmy...Jimmy's DOWN; Jimmy's got a compound fracture! Thank God for DVD!
25 The best season is # 4. thank god for it's DVD release.
Season 4 in the seinfeld series is is my opinion "THE BEST" in the show's run. My favorite episode in this season is "The Trip" both parts... Man I love those episodes. all episodes are great though dont get me wrong. This is without a doubt a season worth buying when it comes out. I know I will.
26 Seinfeld: Funniest Man and Show of All Time
This show is so amazing. The brilliant writing never fades over the course of the series. Everything about the show is great and everything has a purpose. And that other guy is right: Julia Louis-Dreyfus is completely hot. She is so perfect in shape and radiance. A true belle of American society.
27 The season that made it officially "A Show About Nothing"
Some of the best episodes are in season 4 like The Contest, The Bubble Boy, The Junior Mint, The Pick, The Opera, The Virgin, The Implant, and The Smelly Car and many other great episodes in the 4th season. Im going to pick up season 4 and I do have the gift set and Im gonna get every season. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is hot.
28 They're all such horrible, horrible people!
This is my favorite season. It has "The Contest", which was a bet sparked by George's mother catching him at "you know...I was alone...". They all bet on who can go the longest without doing "you know...". Although this is most people's favorite Seinfeld episode, mine happens to be "The Junior Mint", also in this season. Jerry is dating a woman whose name he can't remember but he knows it rhymes with a female body part. Could it be Mulva? And who can forget George's Trival Pursuit game with the Bubble Boy, in which the Bubble Boy loses by insisting the Moors conquered Spain in the 8th century, when in fact, it was the Moops.
Although Seasons 1-3 were good, Season 4 is when the show became sidesplittingly funny. When we would go to work or school and everyone would be talking about the episodes. I can't wait for this video.
29 Here it is...
I have a rule that I apply to find out when an artist, group, etc. makes their best work, and I usually find that it's right before breaking through to fame and success. In its third season, Seinfeld wasn't a top 30 show. In its fifth season, it was a top 5 show. My rule would seem to indicate that this year would be the best, and that is true, although the rest of the Larry David years were uniformly excellent.
This year contains many of the show's greatest moments. The Contest is a landmark in the show's history, in which Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, and George try to go without self-gratification. The Implant is also notable, with Jerry musing whether or not his girlfriends' breasts are real. I also get a kick out of Kramer's story in the episode, where he becomes convinced that Salman Rushdie is a member of his health club. The Junior Mint is also iconic, where Jerry can't remember a woman's name (the episode's infamous final joke left many people confused afterward). But my favorite would have to be The Outing, where Jerry and George are "outed" and thus spawned the line "not that there's anything wrong with that." Amid all of this was George and Jerry's attempts to produce a pilot for NBC, which, of course, was not picked up. It did, though, allow Heidi Swedberg to become a semi-regular member of the cast as Susan, George's on-again, off-again girlfriend (and later fiancee). She provided an excellent foil for Jason Alexander, who really comes into his own in this season, the last twinges of the Woody Allen-like anxiety replaced with Larry David-like paranoia and self-loathing. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I am especially looking forward to this DVD release: the previous two DVD sets were excellent both in terms of picture quality and extras. If only other DVD-makers would follow this standard--the last Frasier installment was devoid of special features of any kind. You don't need me to tell you how great the show is--you already know. So buy this set. Now.
30 Good season
I agree with the other reviewers that this was really the season where the show took off to another level above that of any other show.
I don't consider this to be the best season, but i will definately be buying it when it is released. I have seasons 1-3 and have loved the improved picture quality and bonus features that are included.
I'm just glad they didn't decide to wait until X-mas time to release this one.
31 Maybe the Best Season of All!
I am a huge Seinfeld and have the first three seasons on DVD. In my opinion Season 4 has the most classic episodes on it than any other season. If you cant decide on which season to get, whether it be price or something else GET SEASON 4! You wont regret it.

33 YaY!
My brother got me started watching Seinfeld in the 4th Season it was on the air. I've since watched every episode in re-runs many times over. George is my favorite character from the show, though it's hard to imagine the show without any of the regulars. There are some great episodes from this season: The Contest, The Bubble Boy, The Junior Mint, just to name a few.
