1 Price gouging????
I bought a Sharp MD MT15 from Circuit City in August 2000. I paid $179.99 for it. There is absolutely no difference between that unit and the one shown here. Why is this one so expensive?

As far as the product goes, it was a very handy tool for a working musician. I kept it in a padded, waterproof container in my briefcase. It worked great for 4 years, then it suddenly quit working in July 2004 for no apparent reason. I got a "TOC Error" on every single disk that I loaded. I might consider buying another one - but not without an extended warranty... and I certainly wouldn't pay more than $150 for it!!

2 MISLEADING PRICE
I saw this unit listed for 49 dollars used. None to be found! I am so sick of misleading ads!
3 A great little player
I've had this player for almost 3 years now and it still works great. It has good battery life, it's moderately easy to use, it makes good recordings too. The headphones that come along with it are really awesome too. They feel great and have a good sound too. The piece of plastic that clicks when you adjust them broke, but that was after extended use.

I guess I kind of don't like the bulkiness of it, but back when I had it that was about the standard thickness. It's not that great looking either. As far as the sound goes it's nothing spectacular. I think it could be a little bit louder, but maybe all of my recordings are too quiet. One thing is obvious though, the bass boost button really doesn't do a whole lot. I can barely tell a difference when I push it.

I wanted to give a full review so I threw in a few "cons" but overall it's a great player.

5 Simple, no nonsense and reliable
I've had mine for over a year now, and although i've been tempted to change it and get a newer one, i always end up by liking it more every time. It's design is not as cool as the most recent ones, but it offers simplicity and it is user friendly. Ok, it is chunky, doesn't have a remote control or back-lit display, but for less ($$$)you get a simple way to record your favourite music with a quality tape recorders can only dream of, have i said simple? -plug, record, enjoy. The only downside, it takes two AA for a 15 hours playback, when current ones render more with one AA.
It will come a day when i'll upgrade to something better-smaller-more efficient, but it is going to take a breakthrough in MD technology. I might be a conservative guy, but i like this device a lot. It's been a good travel companion.
6 Excellent unit
I've had this player for 2 years so far, with no regrets at all. It's been reliable, has a long battery life and it's fairly sturdy too.(as MDs go) It even survived a 7 foot drop from the top of my locker. The sound quality is excellent, helped by the powerful amp and headphones. Most MD players are notorious for being packed with tinny headphones. In fact, of all the MDs I've listened to, this is the only one I wouldn't buy a new set for. This MD player is one of the cheapest portable recorders around too.

I do have a few minor niggles though:

First off, the RCA jack the player comes with is limited in its usefulness.I would suggest buying a male/male cord. (which will set you back a whopping $3)

Second, the unit is a little bit bulkier than the latest batch of MDs. It still slips easily into a pocket.

Third, the player can skip it jostled enough. No MD is truly skip proof though, so if you intend to jog, I'd suggest a MP3 player. I've never made it skip while doing anything other than jogging.

Overall, an excellent unit. Definately worth considering. Even with all the new players out there, I'd still go with this one.

7 UTOC ERRORS
I thought that by purchasing this product I would be copying hours worth of music in a breeze. Well, I have found out that if i do not turn of the player after every song i record, it will perform a UTOC error rendering the minidisc useless. I have thrown away approximatly 20 dollars worth of minidiscs and wasted tons of time recording. I suggest you purchase another brand or model.
8 BUY AN EXTENDED WARANTY (or learn the hard way)
bought my MD15 about a 10 months ago, (and reviewed it on this thread) and i have not enjoyed any gadget as much. No lie. I listen to it through my computer, on my computer at work, and most importatntly while running or at the gym. Great sound, convenient. records easily and plays back flawlessly. Adding track names is no big deal once you get used to it. But the big new news is this: at all costs, get the best extended waranty you can get. I have already turned one in and got a replacement under my extended waranty. It appears that a lot of people have had to do so, so my Circuit City then bought back my extended waranty (i was not given a choice), and issued a new "replacement" waranty which is good for only one-time (not for a fixed duration as in one year or two years, etc.). After you get the one replacement, you may purchase another replacement waranty for about $35 or so. These are finicky gadgets. I did not abuse mine - never dropped of manhandled it - and it still broke to the point they could not fix it (it had to be replaced). For about $40, the waranty is a good bet. NOTE: I do not buy extended waranties on any other electronic gadget i own, and have never needed one either. These thing (MD Players) are much more delicate and intricate. Otherwise, I have enjoyed the heck out of mine.
9 Great Product....
This is the best Minidisc player/recorder on the market right now. I have used just about every single minidisc player and this one towers over the competition. It has the easiest recording system and is has the best playback quality of any other minidisc device. I think that this is the best product for your money, it is not as expensive as most other devices either. THIS IS A MUST HAVE IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A MINIDISC SYSTEM.
10 HIGHLY FAVORABLE
I'm using MD to transfer vinyl to minidisc and tried using a Sony MZ-R70. The Sony was terrific except for one huge problem: low volume on replay! Excellent if you're running it through an amplifier, but w/headphones, only dogs could hear it. Someone told me that Sony is overly concerned about hearing loss due to a lawsuit. I switched to the Sharp MD-MT15 which plays back great, playback volume and sound quality are all you want, but I miss the automatic recording level capability of the Sony, and the ability to insert track marks at will with the push of a single button.
11 Alot better than MP3 player
I have three MP3 players and they dont come close to they functionality of a minidisc player. Minidics are alot cheaper than memory cards. Also with this recorder you can easily record songs, divide them, combine, title, and many other things. I recommend this product but the only grip I have is that it doesn't have a remote.
12 good machine
I have had this machine for three months, and it was well worth it. I can record from CDs, tapes, MP3s, and make all sorts of mixes. Editing and labeling discs and tracks are a cinch. I can record lectures in mono, and pack in two lectures per only one minidisc. (With the mono function, I can also listen to the lecture in fast mode.) The sampling rate is among the best, especially in this price range.

There are some drawbacks that people should know. The unit is a bit thick and heavy. The headphones that come with it are not the best quality. This doesn't come with a battery pack, but I just bought a pair of rechargeable AA and a recharger and that works fine. (I tend to lose accessories a lot so if you're like me, the fact that AA can work with this is actually a blessing in disguise because battery packs are rather pricey.) It is also difficult to get a remote for the unit because this doesn't come with one. (If anyone has or knows a remote that works with this unit, let me know.)

All in all, this is not a bad machine, considering there are minidiscs players that can't record that sell for more than this one. This machine is usually the lower priced of the MD player/recorders on the market however the quality is not only very good for the price, but it is very good, period.

13 perfect for roadtrips!
I saved up and bought this MD Player in preparation for my most recent vacation. I was going to cross the country by Greyhound and had no intention of listening to local radio the whole time. The player arrived the Wednesday before my Friday departure. After I got it home from work (and after all the Radio Shacks had closed for the night), I found out that I needed an adaptor to connect to my PC. Obviously I wasn't happy about being led to believe that I'd be recording right out of the box. One $6.00 adaptor and 24 hours later, and I was recording my mp3s. The instruction manual is very well written and only took a bit of flipping through before I was labelling the tracks I'd recorded. The player stood up through over 3000 miles and 8 days of riding around in my coat pocket with no problems whatsoever. The headphones are cheap and crappy, but functional. I noticed that the tones carrying the lyrics of a song tend to escape out the sides of the headphones, but that was easily remedied with swapping for a set I picked out myself. The other complaint I have about the headphones is that they have "Sharp MD" printed on them. I don't mind the brand written on them, but I'd really rather not advertise the fact that I'm carrying over $150 worth of equipment in my pocket. Although, a few creative minutes with a nail file reduced my personal chances of being mugged.
14 this thing is sweet
this is cool this per son is stupid cause i misspelled my username and i got this kid
15 Sharp MD-MT15 Just What The Audio Doctor Ordered
This player is just what I need. It's affordable and it has every feature I care about. I don't need a remote--I don't run around with it--I use it in the car and at home. That's also why the fact it's bigger and thicker than some MD's doesn't matter at all. It doesn't come with a rechargeable battery--so I ordered one. Besides, you can pop in AA's. The unit uses the latest MD circuitry and is 24-bit. Recordings sound great. So far, after several months of use, it has been reliable. I did have a Sharp 702, which, when it's working, is a good little machine, too. Outside of the remote and battery, the MT15 does EVERYTHING that recorder does. So, if you're not concerned about size, remote and rechargeable battery, as well as certain features the newer Sonys might have [which, to me, don't matter much], spend fewer dollars on this one.
16 Pretty good, but not great.
I have had the MD-MT15 for about half a year now and I must say that it is pretty good, but it lacks a few things. First that it didn't come with a remote, second that it is pretty large for a MD player, and third that you have to lift the top off to insert a MD. A few weeks ago I went go-karting with it in my pocket and when I was done, the thing was totally pushed in and it didn't work no more. I truely thought that it was broken, but I just unscrewed it and pressed the large dent out and it worked perfectly again, although it is a little hard to insert a MD now. Analog recording is cool, but the TOC gets all messed up, although is is possible to divide tracks fairly easily. With 10 second shock, the MD-MT15 also doesn't skip that much (unless I run).
17 The best at the price?
What are the marketing people doing? Having a holiday? Out to lunch? Dead? This is an amazing piece of kit at the price. Frankly, it's stunning. Why pay more for a personal MD? Put it like this ... I bought this thing more out of curiosity - after I heard it, I bought a Sony minidisc hi-fi for the home, and then I bought a Blaupunkt MD for the car. In fact, the whole MD concept is amazing. Who needs CDs? No-one needs tapes. MD is where it should be at. My advice is that if you don't know about MD, then find out. If you do, then you would do much worse than to buy the Sharp MDMT15S Portable MiniDisc Player/Recorder. And the company ain't paying me anything (yet!). They just got it right first time (like someone got the Lexus 400 right first time). And MD (and the Sharp) is superb. Don't trust me, go out and listen to it, trust your ears, and buy one ... now!.
18 Awesome Cheap Machine
This machine is so good, recording songs from anything is easy. You can record from a cd or mp3's downloaded off the internet. It's really easy to divide tracks and it makes very good quality sound. The only bad thing is there is no remote but I was able to live with that. This is a quality machine and it is worth every penny and more. If you want a cheap minidisc player that is built nothing on quality, get the Sharp MD-MT15 you won't regret buying this machine.
19 What are you talking about?
those of you who said you arent allowed to divide tracks with this MD player, did you actually try reading the manual? You actually CAN divide tracks with this player and it is very easy. I would definately recomend this player
20 Tough Little Thing
I picked this little thing becuase it was cheap. But I found it was as good a player as I need. It rarely skips, not even when I accidentally dropped it on the ground, it even worked out in the rain. It now has dents and scratches all over it becuase I mountain bike with it, it survived rolling on asphault. And it records in perfect quality and divides contrary to some other reviewers words. The only thing I wish it had was an illumnated remote. I love this little Sharp product.
21 Good for Recording Lectures
I bought this recorder to record accompanyment from a MIDI player for violin practice assuming it would be sufficiently speed accurate to keep precise tone and so I don't have to lug around a heavy MIDI player. It did a great job of recording everything I wanted until I tried to use it for my intended purpose and it was very hard to play to and match tones, unlike my MIDI players. I gave it to my son to use to record college lectures and got a Marantz cassette machine instead.
22 i didn't like it
A friend of mine lent this minidisc player to me and i did't like it. It has no control remote so you have to have it in your hand. For example with the MDMS702 you can put it on hold and put it in your pocket and place the control remote on your waist and cover it woith your shirt and people will never know if you are listening to a minidisc player. This way you avoid being robbed if you go out of the house with it. I tried a remote control from the MDMS702 on the 15s and the screen on the control remote didn't even turn on. I tell you to stop being cheap and spend 20 more dollars on the MDMS702, it's worth it. Another bad thing in the clamp shell opening. with the other method you can change the minidisc while it is in the carrying case and with the clamp shell opening you have to take it out. I don't recomend it to you.
23 Excellent MinDisc Player/Recorder
This is a perfect player for someone who enjoys editing and putting together minidiscs from their vast cd collections. Sharp has done a great job by putting out such an inexpensive yet powerful little player/recorder. Definitely worth the price and more! Hope you enjoy yours.
24 A great, cheap minidisc player
I don't what these other reviewers problems were this machine, but I love it. I purchased the MD-15 three months ago and have loved every minute. You can divide tracks (quite easily!) as well as combine and move tracks.

I have only used an analog connection to record, but I think that this is the way most people record on minidisc anyways. When recording in analog, you will not get the tracks to transfer to the minidisc. This is true of ALL minidisc recorders. After recording, you simply go to the end of each track, timewise, and divide. If you have a PC, you can use the windows cd player to determine the actual length of each track (a big help for many CDs which have no track times on the label).

All in all, the only problem with this unit is that it does not come with a headphone remote. A fair trade off for a great minidisc player.

The machine is a hardy unit and, if I had it to all over again, I would definately buy the Sharp MD-15S again.

25 One hunk of junk
i bought mine thinking ya im cool i gotta minidisc until i realized it doesnt divide tracks well adn it got jammed. i have a minidisc stuck in there for good. and when i called the guys at sharp they said i have to bring it to a certified technician 100 miles away. spend the extra 20 30 bucks for the mdms 702 you wont be sorry.
26 A PIECE OF JUNK!
Yes, it plays minidiscs, you can record to it and its cheap, but Sharp left out one little feature that every minidisc player should have. The ability to divide one track into two. If your like me and have a lot of music with no silent spots to mark the seperation of tracks, you wont like this product. The only way it knows a new track is comming is by a three second lapse in sound. The only way one could manualy mark tracks is to hit the record button at the EXACT TIME THE NEXT TRACK STARTS. I'm quite sure no one here has that kind of time and patience. Every other Sharp MD player/recorder has the ability to divide tracks, so if you dont want to live with annoying skips in your music, pay the extra $ and get the Sharp MDMS702. You can divide tracks, and you have the nice remote that every other MD player has. ITS WORTH IT!

Note to those who bought this player with the Voquette media manager, DONT BOTHER. The hardware for the thing is just a fancy power adapter and standard audio cable. Their software is just a glorified MP3 player, that you can download for FREE! So save yourself the extra $ and get a audio cable and use the adapter supplied.

27 have it but i don't want it anymore
This is the cheapest MD player I have seem so far. I got it last week. But I don't want it anymore because my father bought me the Sony. The Sony is 150 more expensive but doesn't allow you to name the song like this one . BUT it the sony is 1/2 thiner than this one. I need to get rid of this MD. Whom want it? I will sell it cheap.
28 Everything I expected it to be & More
I bought the Sharp 15S because I wanted to be able to listen to the MP3 files I downloaded from the internet while away from my computer - mostly while running. MP3 players are just not practical when you consider that you typically only get 60 minutes of music before you have to buy extra memory at a very high price. ALl the reviews I read said the SHarps sound about the best. The SHarp 722 got very good reviews, and the 15S has about the same sampling rate as the the 722 (therefore, sound quality should be comparable). Disadvatages to the 15S:

* The 15S does not have a remote. I have never used a remote, but i don't feel like i'm missing much.

* The 15S does not have a built-in rechargable battery. Instead I use Rechargable batteries I bought from RadioShack. No big deal.

* Sharp is a bit thicker than some other players. But it still quite tiny by any standards. Not a problem to me.

* Skips - if I put the Sharp 15S in a fanny pack designed for runners, it still skips while running, even though it has a "10 second skip guard memeory" function. So I have to hold it in my hand while running, and it won't skip. If you hod this, it will virtually never skip.

* Got the dreaded UTOC error once, and it ereased a disk I just finished recording. Other than that one instance, the UTOC error never happened again,. (I have had this for 2 weeks.)

On the Pro side: sound quality is very good. Its a lot of fun. Price is much better than a lot of other models. ... Now I have a great library of downloaded music. THis thing has turned me into an avid listener of music again. Treat yourself to a real gift. I'm glad I did.

Also, look up HoustonViper's website for good info on recording MP3 files that you have dowloaded from the internet onto your minidisc player. ...

29 Sharp MDMT15S mini disc player
This is a really great mini disc player for the price. You are able to do numerous things with it. It is great to listen to just about anywhere. The sound quality is awesome. Also, it is able to get really loud so if you are on a bus or something you are still able to hear your music. It is really easy to learn how to operate so you can start recording right away. I hope you have fun with yours like I do.
30 Mini Disc player/recorders are amazing as is this one
I had wanted to take advantage of MP3 files for a long time but MP3 players seemed absurd to me in that you had your one hour of music but had to keep rerecording or spend mega bucks on more memory.

Mini discs on the other hand always sounded awesome. A buck and half disc, 74 minutes, optical digital recording, a hardy and protected media (the mini disc itself), and all the editing options you could ever want.

Well now you can have your Mini Disc and your MP3 too. Sharp mini discs with software you can purchase (check with the sharp-usa website) let you record MP3 and other files onto your sharp mini disc. That is one use. I frankly havnt gotten guite the results I would like yet, doing this but it has been better then expected. But what really blows you away is converting your CD collection (and your friends!) to mini disc.

It is a breeze to learn how to record CDs and the editing options even on this no frill model are incredible. The results are wonderful. Great lush sounds from my jazz. classical and pop collections. It really is quite beyond me why mini disc hasn't taken off like gang busters but buy one of these especially if you have access to a lot of other people's cds. Believe me you will thank me a 1000 times over for this suggestion because you will soon have the music library you always dreamed of and a very compact one at that.

31 Great
I debated over the Mini Disc and the MP3 for a long time. when I finally decided to buy the mini disc. i was short on cash. so i bought this one. it has great sound quality. not as thin as you might like but you really get used to it. it is very easy to use and record.

A priest asked: What is Fate, Master?
And the Master answered:
It is that which gives a beast of burden its reason for existence.
It is that which men in former times had to bear upon their backs.
It is that which has caused nations to build byways from City
to City upon which carts and coaches pass, and alongside which inns
have come to be built to stave off Hunger, Thirst and Weariness.
And that is Fate? said the priest.
Fate... I thought you said Freight, responded the Master.
That's all right, said the priest. I wanted to know
what Freight was too.
