1 A Classic
Sleepless In Seattle is movie that sticks with you. You could watch it over and over and over again and not get tired of it.
Set in Seattle, and unlike many think, a very romantic city, the story follows a widower named Sam(Hanks) and his son Jonah (Malinger), and a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, Annie(Ryan).
After Jonah calls a advice radio station about his widower father, Annie, on the other side of county in Baltimore becomes very interested in Sam. Through story, both Sam and Annie contemplate meeting after Annie sends a letter to them. In the end their meeting happens just like in the old movie Annie and Becky(O'Donnell) had watched over and over again.
Sleepless In Seattle is a classic and a great movie.
2 EXCELLENT!
An outstanding romantic comedy, Sleepless in Seattle, brings to the screen the love story between a recently widowed father of one from Seattle and a bride to be from New York, with all the ups and downs that that entails!
It is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about trust, love, and inner strength.
Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears. The film is simple enough, but does a great job of describing people's every day lives and the problems they face. It just goes to show that simplicity is often far better than complexity, when trying to present issues of a human nature.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Sleepless in Seattle is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
3 Great movie
As much as i hate to admit it, i love sleepless in seattle. This coming from a 16 year old sophomore in high school...I first watched this movie with my mom a long way back when it had just come out, and i enjoyed it more because my mom told me it was good rather than because i actually liked it. But as i got older, and watched it more, i found out that the movie is just brilliant. A GREAT story, and a wonderfully directed film by Nora Ephron. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are M-O-F-E (made for each other, watch the movie) in romantic comedies. Great movie. (oh, and the person who reviewed this before me, says that the 10th anniversary edition is missing the broom closet scene...i dont know if thats just their version, because i know that scene is in this DVD. And i double checked to make sure i had the 10th anniversary edition, and i do. Just pointing that out.) GREAT MOVIE, A CLASSIC...BUY IT
4 Great Film, But Missing one of the Best Scenes
Sleepless in Seattle is among my favorite movies, and I was looking forward to seeing the ENTIRE film. Unfortunately, I discovered that this edition is missing at least one significant (and in my opinion, very funny) scene: The part where Annie, having received a phone call from her friend Becky telling her that Sleepless in Seattle was on the radio again, ends up hiding in the broom closet so that she can listen without Walter finding out. I have no idea why it was cut from the DVD edition, and wish I had known before purchasing.
5 E-Courtship & Cross-Continental Romance
I recently saw three films again, two directed by Norah Ephron. This one plus When Harry Met Sally which Rob Reiner directed (1989) and You've Got Mail (1998). All three are quite different but each has held up remarkably well. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan co-star in this updated version of An Affair to Remember (1957). I leave it to others to compare and contrast those two films. Suffice to say I enjoy both. What is quite odd about Sleepless in Seattle is that Hanks and Ryan spend almost no time together on-screen until the inevitable conclusion atop the Empire State Building, at which point they finally meet. However implausible the plot may be, the film succeeds because of Norah Ephron's crisp direction of an excellent cast.
After Sam Baldwin (Hanks) becomes a widower, he and son Jonah (Ross Malinger) relocate to Seattle and live aboard a houseboat. Some time later, Jonah calls in to a radio station, asking for help to locate a new mother. Sam then begins to explain to the radio audience how much he loved his late wife and how much he and Jonah now miss her. Of course, Annie Reed (Ryan) hears all this and immediately falls in love with Sam. In fact, thousands of women throughout the United States do and write letters to "Sleepless in Seattle" to tell him so. And then....Credit Larry Atlas and David S. Ward with an especially clever screenplay. Several members of the supporting cast are outstanding, notably young Malinger, Bill Pullman (to whom Annie is initially engaged), Rosie O'Donnell (her friend Becky), Rob Reiner (Sam's friend Jay), and Rita Wilson (Hanks's offscreen wife) in a brief but memorable appearance who is hilarious when explaining why An Affair to Remember means so much to her. Nice touch.
More a quibble than a complaint, I wish that in this film (as well as in When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail) Ephron were not quite so manipulative with her use of music. Heaven knows, the CD continues to sell well because it is full of great stuff: As Time Goes By (Jimmy Durante), Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong), Stardust (Nat King Cole), Makin' Whoopee (Dr. John), In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning (Carly Simon), Back in the Saddle Again (Gene Autry), Bye Bye Blackbird (Joe Cocker), Wink and a Smile (Harry Connick, Jr.), Stand by Your Man (Tammy Wynette), An Affair to Remember (original soundtrack), Make Someone Happy (Jimmy Durante), and When I Fall in Love (Celine Dion). That said, I enjoyed seeing this film again and, this time around. I was much more interested in Sam's relationship with his resourceful son than in his long-distance relationship with Annie, a two-dimensional character at best.
6 Best movie-EVER!
"Sleepless in Seattle" is one of the most heartwarming, inspiring, and romantic movies that I've ever seen.
The movie is about Annie (Meg Ryan), a journalist for the Baltimore Sun, who is engaged to someone whom she's not 100% sure is the one for her. One night, while tuning into a late night radio show, she listens as a young boy confides in the radio show host his father's hurt after losing his wife. Right then and there, she falls in love with "Sleepless in Seattle," and writes him a letter.
Meanwhile, the young boy in Seattle, Jonah, is very sad because his dad, Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) is dating a woman he does not approve of. After the radio show, tons of letters come piling in, and while Sam does not read them, Jonah does. Soon, he finds Annie's letter, and thinks she's perfect. Sam, however, will not give in to Jonah's plea to go to New York and meet Annie on top of the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day-a suggestion Annie put in her letter under the guidance of a friend (played by Rose O'Donnell), inspired by the movie "An Affair to Remember."
My favorite part is when Sam tells the radio station how he is coping with the loss of his wife-"Well, I'm gonna get out of bed every morning, breath in and out all day long. Then, after a while I won't have to remind myself to get out of bed every morning and breath in and out. And, then, after a while, I won't have to think about how I had it great and perfect for a while."
If that doesn't go straight to the heart, I don't know what will. I can definitely see why Annie fell for "Sleepless in Seattle"-it's what every woman wants (even the ones over 40 ;-D).
7 Better get the older version
Comparing tyhis edition, to the older one, I see very little difference, other than a gift certificate: They pretty much just changed the box design. If you know you will be spending $10 at Starbucks within a few months of this DVD's release, then perhaps you might want to buy it; otherwise, it is far cheaper to get the "collector's edition", which has all of the same big features as this one. You can find it pretty cheaply on Amazon still, and it is pretty common to find it in the low-priced selections of a lot of other stores as well.
8 Absolutely wonderful!
I first saw this movie when I was in college with my roomate, who knows all the best movies out there. I absolutely fell in love with it, and I went out and bought it immediately. It's ideal if you are single, it gives you hope for finding that perfect someone :), at least it did for me. If you like You've Got Mail, you'll also like Sleepless in Seattle, or if you haven't seen either, they go perfect together!!
9 great chick flick for chicks
Tom Hanks stars as recent widower from Seattle who talks to a radio show host about his troubles and Meg Ryan plays a recently engaged woman from New York who develops a relationship with Hank's character. The plot is a bit cheesy as well as the lines, but that is how chick flicks are made--cheesy plots and lines. Though most guys will not like "Sleepless in Seattle" unless they enjoy other "chick flicks," most women enjoy this contemporary classic of long distance romance. If you like the movie be sure to check out the DVD, which has many more added features such as a music video and commentary by the director and co-writer.
10 Sleepless in Seattle
WOW! I LOVE this movie! It's a favorite of all my families. I think this is a great love story and almost anyone would enjoy it.
11 Very original storyline!
As a rule, I like romantic comedies. But even I can admit that most of the time, the plots are somewhat lacking, if not out-and-out "redos" of some other movie. However, not so with this movie; the storyline here a unique and charming twist. Before I begin gushing, I'll discuss the one issue I had with this movie: the sexual references. Totally inappropriate coming out of the mouth of an 8-yr old, and not what I would expect of a PG movie.
Having said that, the story, if somewhat implausible, was definitely engaging. Tom Hanks will break your heart as Sam, a widowed father trying to put the pieces of his life together--working hard to be a good father while depending on his son to help him "get out of bed in the morning, & breathe in & out all day".
Meg Ryan is always charming (well, except for in Top Gun), but Annie is probably her most charming role. Her struggle between a stable, predictable life with her soon to be husband and what she begins to perceive as her "destiny" culminates with a trip to the Empire State Building and a very touching scene as Annie hits it off with Josh who badly needs a mother's love.
The ties it makes to "An Affair to Remember" add a humorous sentimentality to this movie, but in no way "copy" the plot of the old classic. In fact, these scenes poke gentle fun at the movie, without being disrespectful or harsh.
Not necessarily a classic itself, but all in all a really good flick!
12 Very Charming.
Sleepless in Seattle is a movie icon that couldn't have been possible by the A plus chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The film is really wonderful. It makes you feel like you know the characters and actually feel for them. Meg Ryan is cute and funny as always and Tom Hanks plays the lovesick loner role very well. Roseie O' Donnel plays the role of the best friend to Annie (Meg Ryan), and coincidentally Rita Wilson plays one of Tom Hanks's friends, who knew. The plot is a little slow but it isn't a romantic snoozefest. I highly reccomend this movie.
13 An All time favorite
One of the greatest movies ever.
I cry everytime I see it, over a dozen time and I'm a guy.
14 'You want to be in love in a movie'
OK, it's corny, it stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, but who cares? The story is perfect. It's predictable, and it's obvious what happens, but never mind. It's one of those movies that you can put your feet up, kick the cat out, and watch, without having to think about things. It's not one of those complicated movies with lots of twists and turns. It's simplistic, and that's good, when you're feeling low, or just plain normal.
Now Meg Ryan's popularity is slightly diminishing these days, and after her now infamous appearance (for UK viewers) on Parkinson, where she acted bored, and generally defensive, and refused to answer questions. These movies, along with You've Got Mail etc, are great to watch, before she became big headed and what have you.
There are a lot of references to an old movie, starring Cary Grant and Debra someone, so if you haven't seen it, it's pretty obvious (it gets explained throughout the movie, with a lot of tears from the chicks, and groans from the big hard guys), but it doesn't really add anything to the movie.
Jonah Baldwin (Tom Hanks son in the movie) is played brilliantly by Ross Malinger. He had me in fits, especially in his OTT dramatic scene, when Sam announces he's going to get laid over the weekend away with the women with the hyena laugh. Sam tells Jonah to "shut up", and Jonah comes storming back through from his room, saying "tell me to shut up". He is so adorable!
Annie (Meg Ryan) and her best friend, Becky, (Rosie O'Donnell) comes out with some great lines during this movie! Meg is playing her cute & quirky character, so she comes out with a great one: "When a man is a widower why do we say he was widowed? Why don't we say he was widowered?" and "Destiny is something we've invented because we can't stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental." Rosie's character Becky is so laid back, she's practically horizontal! Everything is said in an extremely bored manner, meaning she comes out with terrific quotes like: "A movie! That's your problem! You don't want to be in love. You want to be in love in a movie." and "Verbal ability is a highly overrated thing in a guy, and it's our pathetic need for it that gets us into so much trouble."
For a 10th anniversary edition, there isn't much on it. The cover is pretty cute (I always prefer black covers to other covers - I'm letting my 'dark' side sneak out), but the extras aren't much to write home about. You've got a music video from some guy and Celine Dion; an audio commentary by director Nora Ephron and co-writer Delia Ephron and a "Love In The Movies" featurette. Oh, and you also get some other trailers for other movies that include My Best Friend's Wedding, this film, Philadelphia, and two others, which I'd never heard of her, so that's my excuse for not remembering them!
This is a terrific movie, and despite the fact it's completely and utterly predictable, it's great. Don't argue with me.
And will someone please tell me what the hell "tiramisu" means? It's mentioned during the scene where Sam is talking about how the last time he was out there, and we never get told what it means!
15 Loving it in New York
If you enjoy romantic comedies this is one of the best. Even my husband, who usually runs from the room when I put on a chick flick, enjoyed watching this. He especially loves the scene where they tease Sam's sister about "An Affair to Remember."
But seriously folks, this is a well-written, charming, timeless tale of sorrow and soulmates. Ryan and Hanks work beautifully together and the supporting cast completes the film nicely. I recommend watching it with the commentary on at least once. It will get you to see it in a whole new light each time. You'll also pick up on things you might not have caught the first time such as the "theme of red."
Buy it for your self and share it with someone you love!
16 Not Great, but it Works as a Feel-Good Modern Fable
Nora Ephron's SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993) is a nice fairy-tale of a movie that takes its primary inspiration from a classic Hollywood film, is written & directed by a chick-flick veteran, stars a pair of actors in what is at least their third on-screen pairing, and somehow comes out smelling as fresh as a newly-picked rose. This is a perfect date film, tailor-made for Valentine's Day. It creates the proper romantic mood for you & yours, while not requiring anyone to think too hard; put it to you this way, you won't miss much during your obligatory necking sessions.
The Hollywood classic is AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957), to which numerous references are made throughout this film. The two stars of that earlier picture are Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The two stars of this film are, of course, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The combination of them with chick-flick queen Nora Ephron would lead you to believe that this movie is super-schmaltzy. Although the story unfolds according to the predictable manipulations of Ephron, and contains too many too-good-to-be-believable coincidences, it is ripe with sarcastic humor and even downplays its own hokiness. There's even a cute reference in it that a character makes towards films of this type.
It is very well-acted. As has been mentioned, this film was released in 1993, when Tom Hanks was finding himself as an actor; in fact, his very next film was PHILADELPHIA (also 1993), for which he deservedly won his first Oscar for Best Actor in an extremely complex role. This performance, while not as deep, is still quietly nuanced--and very sympathetic. It rings true, unlike the machinations of the script. Meg Ryan is also in fine form here, really finding her own quiet nuances while avoiding her previous tendencies to play cutsy. Ross Malinger, playing the young-but-wise son of Tom Hanks' character, does very well, even if the script provides him with some pretty unbelievable things to say at times. We also get a fine performance, even if it is essentially one-note, from Bill Pullman; I loved his touching scene with Ryan at the rooftop hotel restaurant late in the film. Also adding to the festivities are Rosie O'Donnell, David Hyde Pierce and Rob Reiner; each contributing his/her own unique brand of comedy. There's even a memorable cameo by Tom Hanks' real-life wife Rita Wilson.
Lastly, I like the way this movie makes good use of its Seattle and New York City locations. SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE may not make you sleepless, but it will entertain you, and maybe even bring out some of the hopeless romantic lurking somewhere in the depths of your heart and soul.
RECOMMENDED
17 Good family movie
This movie stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Hanks plays Sam, a widowed architect, and parent of an 8 year-old son in Seattle. Ryan plays Annie, an engaged journalist in Baltimore. On Christmas Eve, Sam's son Jonah calls a phone-in radio show, saying that his dad needs a new wife. Sam comes onto the phone, and starts talking about how much he loved his wife. Meanwhile, Annie is listening to the show, falling in love with Sam over the radio, despite being engaged. Other popular actors in this film include Rosie O'Donnell, Bill Pullman, David Hyde Pierce, and Victor Garber.
If this sounds like a so-called "chick flick" to you, let me tell you that my dad loves this movie. This is really a good family movie.
18 "It rains nine months a year in Seattle."
In 1993, Nora Ephron directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the charming film "Sleepless in Seattle". The story, which was written by Jeff Arch, is about two strangers: the recently widowed architect Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) and writer Annie Reed (Meg Ryan). Sam lives in Seattle with his 8-year-old son Jonah (Ross Malinger), and Annie lives on the east coast and is recently engaged to the very allergic Walter (Bill Pullman). While driving from her parent's home on Christmas Eve, Annie turns on the radio, which is tuned to a talk show hosted by radio-psychologist Dr. Marcia Fieldstone (voice of Caroline Aaron). Wanting to help his dad find a new wife, Jonah calls Dr. Fieldstone who convinces Jonah to put Sam on the phone. Initially reluctant to talk, Sam suddenly lets out his emotions about how much he misses his deceased wife and how difficult it is for him to sleep at night. Hence, he is given the name of "Sleepless in Seattle" on the show. Annie is deeply moved as she hears him, as are many other women who heard the show. After discussing the show with her friend and coworker Becky (Rosie O'Donnell), Annie is determined to meet Sam, in spite of the fact that she's engaged to Walter and Sam lives 3000 miles away. Annie eventually writes to Sam in care of the radio station (along with several other hundred women who had done the same), and tries to rationalize her behavior by seeking more advice from her psychologist brother Dennis (David Hyde Pierce). Thinking that all of the women who have written could be crazy, Sam has no interest in any of them and begins to date the cackling Victoria (Barbara Garrick) after talking with his friend Jay (Rob Reiner); but Jonah likes Annie from the content of her letter and wants his Dad to fly to NYC to meet her on the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day, like in the 1957 film "An Affair to Remember".
"Sleepless in Seattle" is a very engaging and entertaining film, in part because of the touching story, but also because of the fine acting from Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Rosie O'Donnell and Ross Malinger. Other memorable characters in the film include Sam's friends Greg (Victor Garber) and Suzy (Rita Wilson); as well as Johan's 8-year-old friend Jessica (Gaby Hoffman), Claire Bennett (Dana Ivey) and the deceased Maggie Abbott Baldwin (Carey Lowell). Memorable scenes in the film include the funeral, Jonah & Sam on the phone with Dr. Fieldstone, Annie listening to the radio, Annie at work with Becky, Annie writing her letter, Annie with Dennis, Annie's trip to Seattle, Annie in NYC with Walter and the closing scenes. The film's wonderful soundtrack includes two songs performed by Jimmy Durante (1893-1980, "As Time Goes By" and "Make Someone Happy"), as well as Gene Autrey's "Back in the Saddle Again", Louis Armstong's performance of "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", and many more. The film received two Oscar nominations for Best Song and Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
Overall, I rate "Sleepless in Seattle" with 5 out of 5 stars. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan would perform together again in the 1998 film "You've Got Mail" (which wasn't as good). They also worked together in the 1990 film "Joe Versus the Volcano". David Hyde Pierce went on to play another psychologist shortly thereafter in the very popular 1993-2004 TV series "Frasier", which ironically takes place in Seattle.
19 Remember Affair to Remember?
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan go together like bacon and eggs - and are usually just as down-home wholesome.
Remember the ooold one with Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant? This is pretty much the same tale except there's no kid added to the mix in the original. You've got your romantic comedy shtick of a recently-engaged women in NY who hears about a recently widowed man (with a young son) in Seattle and somehow forms the conviction that they're destined to be together. Complex miscommunications, bad karma, minor accidents - all sorts of stuff threaten the pre-ordained meeting on the roof of a skyscraper from happening, but of course it eventually does (thanks to the kid), and the rest is, shall we say, cinema history.
Written down like this, it sounds cheesy. It's not. Curl up on a rainy night with a lover and some nice wine and this video, and who needs to go out on the town?
20 the best movie of all time
i absolutley love this movie!!!!!! i can watch it over and over and over again and i never get tired of it!!!! It makes me smile evry time because they finally make it together in the end. and the way that everything comes together in such a coincidental way......
21 fluff is much to kind...
without a doubt one of the worst movies ever. what bothers me is not the slow plot or predictability, but that it is the best example in recent memory of sentimentality masking pure mean spiritedness. Besides Tom Hanks I cannot begin to comprehend how anyone considers any of these characters likeable. Nor can I believe that there are writers out there dumb enough to write this kind of stuff and mean it. There's nothing wrong with the idea that there is a perfect match out there for someone, but when all the other 'candidates' are characterized as being something less than human (i.e. they're living cliches) then the only word for that is viciousness. A perfect example of something being the complete opposite of what it pretends to be.
22 Sleepless is Sensational
Sure its a chickflick, but I really do think Men would like this movie too. Why not? Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are wonderful together, and this movie really set a tone. A heartwarming movie that makes you want to see it over and over again.
23 Loving this Lovestory
Tomy and Meg are a total delight in this light and lucsious romantic comedy.
24 But they haven't met!!
This film did not sweep me away the way it did so many other people. I love romantic comedies, but this one lacks an ingredient that, to me, is essential. Our main characters never meet until the final scene! I simply could not invest any interest in a romance that is clearly simply delusional.
???Sleepless in Seattle??? has some fine moments, an excellent supporting cast, and a soundtrack that is used absolutely perfectly. It is a great film to rent, and a wonderful study of it???s time. But as a romance, it just didn???t convince me. When the two lovers never interact face to face the believability of a true romance suffers.
25 The Best Movie For Anyone In Love
This is a small message I wrote on a message board, and I felt like sharing this with all of you, because I don't think I can write my own review for the movie right now after having expressed myself.
This movie, is truly, for anyone who's in love, and needs to know if it's true.
(Yesterday) I was feeling depressed throughout the day. I'm sure some of you know about my situation - I'm in love with this person, and I know it's love for sure, but I just don't know how to express myself. I was able to say "Hi" to this person of Friday, and I got my own "Hello" back. The moment when we saw face to face and our eyes met - it was just overwhelming. I'm sure that some of you are probably thinking 'This kid's 15 - he doesn't know the true meaning of love!' - but I say different. I've been having to deal with this situation for a few weeks now, and after watching Sleepless In Seattle, I've come to realize that I'm truly in love. Some of the things Annie (Meg Ryan), Sam (Tom Hanks), and Jonah (the son) did drove me to tears - they even drove me to laughter, like when Annie jumped out of bed to go downstairs, get the phone and the radio, and hide in the broom closet so she could listen to Jonah on the radio.
What made it so special to me, is that even though you may think you're in love, chances are, you're really not, and you're still trying to find that special someone for you. Well, since Jonah had called in to that radio station and Annie suddenly found herself interested by this whole situation, Annie began to do crazy things, which in the end, weren't crazy at all. She told lies to her fiance so she could go to Seattle and see Sam and Jonah. When she first got off the plane, the chemistry between Annie and Sam really showed - even more so when they encountered each other at the street where Annie was almost hit by a semi, and almost by a taxi. The chemistry they had, and Annie's feelings for Sam really got to me. It showed me that I am in love, and that it's for certain. Sure, things may not work out for me, but I know I'll still be happy, being able to see this person for the rest of the year - and who knows, maybe even the next two. Maybe even after I get out of High School.
Anyway, I felt like sharing this with you all, because this is truly a wonderful movie for anyone who's in love, and is sure it's real. I'm feeling really choked up now. Hopefully I won't feel so insecure anymore - really, being who you are, makes you who you are. Chances are, the one who's meant for you may be closer than you think. Even though they may be so far away, you'll still have these true feelings inside. I'm going to bed in awhile, but I'll be checking back before I do, and throughout the following days.
I love what it says on the DVD box.
What if someone you never met,
someone you never saw,
someone you never knew,
was the only someone for you?
It just goes to show that even though we may not think it's possible, there's always the possibility that there's true love out there. No matter how close, or how far away it may be.
And that love can find you at any time. <-- A friend, who I told this to, said that should also be on the DVD box.
I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it. Goodnight, everyone, from Sleepless In El Paso.
Josh
26 A GREAT ROMANCE MOVIE
This is a great movie. IT's the perfect chick flick. I must have watched it at least a dozen times. Rosie O'Donnell was in it and she is soooo funny. I wish she was my friend.
LISA
27 Absolutely Wonderful Movie
The person who wrote the review titled "Bearable but that's it" has no heart. This story is sweet. My wife and I have watched this movie at least twenty times and we will never grow tired of it. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are two of the best and brightest that Hollywood has ever had. They both shine in this movie.
28 A Chick Flick But Guys Will Enjoy It
This is one of my very favortie movies off all time! If you are renting this than rent An Affair To Remember and watch it first. It makes Sleepless in Seattle easier to understand. This is a hilarious movie from start to finish! I love the part when Rita Wilson & Victor Garber come and visit and she starts talking about An Affair To Remeber! That part is so funny!!! This is a chick flick but guys usually enjoy it! Most people will enjoy it!
29 All the elements of a fine romantic comedy
Sleepless depicts a story of romance the way many of us (men included) would like to see it. A guy that's being torn-apart inside after the loss of his beloved wife (cancer) moves himself and his son from Chicago to Seattle in hopes of making a fresh start; he ultimately realizes that, irregardless, the move has not put him any closer to recovering from his loss. This is brought to light not only by the phone conversation with a national radio psychiatrist (which is what gets the ball rolling with Meg Ryan), but through the splendid choice of music throughout the movie that let's you really know what's going on in the characters' heads. You just can't help but smile at Hanks playing catch on the beach with his "son" to "A Wink and a Smile", performed by Harry Connick, Jr. I particularly enjoyed the discussion pertaining to "The Dirty Dozen" in response to the multiple "An Affair to Remember" references. With an all-star cast, terrific musical score (featuring the likes of Nat King Cole, Connick, Jr., Joe Cocker, and many others), and directing that reminds one of "When Harry Met Sally", "Sleepless in Seattle" is sure to please all.
30 A chick flick, but I liked it, too
A woman who is about to be married (Meg Ryan) hears a recently widowed man (Tom Hanks) speak on a radio call-in program, becomes convinced that he may be her soulmate, and decides to track him down. This gentle romantic comedy has an old-fashioned charm that will appeal to many. In fact, the filmmakers acknowledge this traditional romantic appeal by consciously referencing and evoking the 1957 soaper, "An Affair to Remember." Ryan makes this film work; her character goes to a great deal of trouble and turns her life upside down on very slim motivation, but she is able to project a belief in the material that really made me think that she might be in the grip of fate. The whole thing culminates in a sweet resolution atop the Empire State Building, resulting in a satisfying film. The one sour note was the character of Ryan's fiancˇe, a Very Nice Man who is so wishy-washy that his only reaction when Ryan walks out on him during dinner is a sheepish grin; but then, I suppose such uninvolved blandness is what made it possible for her to leave him in the first place.
31 Sweet Love Story
"Sleepless In Seattle" is one of the sweetest films I have ever watched. This film pays homage to the classic, "An Affair To Remember" in that two people meet on top of the Empire State Building and find true love.
This film is about a widower, Sam, whose son calls into a radio show on Christmas night and says that his dad needs a wife because he's lonely. Annie, who lives on the other side of the country in Baltimore, MD hears this radio program, and thus begins months of writing, traveling, and wondering.
This is a sweet film that makes you believe that you can not only find true love twice in your life, but you can also find it in the oddest of circumstances. I highly recommend this film!!!
32 One of my "perfect" films
I only got this movie 3 days ago and I am already on the seventh viewing. I just love romantic movies with a happy ending. Although sex is the buzzword these days for most things, this film is notable for its absence as are most other things you might expect to find in a romantic movie.
So what is the attraction ? Well firstly two first class actors. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The storyline is such that they keep "missing" each other but getting occasional glimpses of one another. All the time I was willing them to meet even though it might shorten the movie. Without Jonah (Ross Malinger), Hanks' son, the movie would be doomed to failure since Hanks is no lady pursuer, but Jonah, helped by his little girlfriend mini travel agent make sure of success. This is supposed to be a chick's movie, but as a "guy" I just loved it. My guess is you will want to buy "An Affair to Remember" too to get a fuller picture. I just love movies with subtle little interesting things in them you miss first time round.
If you are looking for reality, this movie is not for you but if you want a lovely story with a happy ending it is lovely. Anybody whose marriage has been "magic" will identify with this film.
33 Superb romantic comedy
You could hardly do better in the romantic comedy department than this wonderfully original and witty film. Meg Ryan listens to the radio one late night and hears a recently widowed man (Tom Hanks) talking to a talk show host about the loss of his wife and his subsequent loneliness. Obsessed with this story that has touched her so, Ryan becomes one of the millions of women around the country who write to him in hopes of making a connection. Of course, her fiancˇ (Bill Pullman) puts a bit of a hitch in the plan. On his end of it, Hanks has enough to cope with trying to raise his son (Ross Malinger) all by himself, not to mention the recent addition of girlfriend Barbara Garrick. The story of star-crossed lovers couldn't be more delightful, but it's the little things in between that Nora Ephron brilliantly includes that make the whole thing so magical. The film rests on its two excellent stars, but also couldn't do without the marvelous support by Rosie O'Donnell, Rita Wilson and Victor Garber and the wonderful subplot that pays tribute to An Affair To Remember (which I don't even like that much in the first place!).
34 Perfect Romantic Holiday Gift
'Sleepless in Seattle' has always been one of my favorite romantic movies! DVD was great! there could've been more special features, but I buy something for the movie not the extras!! highly recommended if you are shopping for mom, girlfriend, wife or friend!!
35 Bearable but that's it
I rented it because I loved when Harry Met Sally, and I thought that the talent might spill over into this movie. Instead, this was a silly, predictable story. Really, is a child who lost his mother a year ago going to try to find his father a replacement? isn't the kid grieving too? He sure doesn't seem that way. What nonsense.
This is a good movie to skip. Rent it only if you want soothing background noise.
36 Just a Fantastic, Heart-tugging Flick
Great soundtrack, good storyline, great acting - this defines this excellent flick.
Hanks and Ryan do their fine acting here as usual, with fine support performances.
The basic line of the trauma of loss of a spouse, and the grieving process of a son and father is exciting, since it typically is widows rather than widowers that get attention.
I especially enjoy the part where Jonah asks his dad if he believes in heaven, and reflectively he responds, "I use not to, but now I'm seriously considering it."
Well done throughout, to be enjoyed over and over. A keeper!
37 Hanks and Ryan together again
Sleepless in Seattle is a great movie on many levels. It is basically parody on "Love Story" with a few changes. Naturally if you notice the cast you already have half of the formula figured out. But the beauty in this movie is in the details.
A recent widower moves across the country to Seattle to get away from old memories. His kid tells the father's story on a talk radio show and says that his dad needs a new wife. You hear heartstrings of women listeners twanging and more than a few closes in for the kill.
38 A Laugh-Out-Loud Funny Charmer
First of all, Sleepless in Seattle IS a chick flick, yes, and there are certainly some stretches of the imagination required as far as plot goes, but the real emphasis is the characters, and that is the strength of the movie...the entire cast is excellent, from Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks to the supporting cast (Rosie O'Donnell, Bill Pullman, Ross Malinger and Robert Reiner). The story and chemistry is charming, but more than that, the movie is hysterical. Everytime I watch the movie again (I've seen it about 5 or 6 times now) I realize how funny it is...Nora Ephron may be the best current writer of real romantic comedies. There are SO many funny little things scattered throughout the movie...even if you don't like "chick flicks," you should watch it because it's one of the funniest movies ever.
39 Ah, you can sleep through it.
This ultimate "chick flick" engenders as much incredulity as you'd suppose, but then again, chick flicks by definition do that. More upsetting to the unbiased movie-watcher (i.e., those with no partisanship for chick flicks, as that genre is commonly defined) is the distressing lack of subtlety in terms of the movie's calculated effects: this is the kind of movie that MUST have *As Time Goes By* tinkling on the soundtrack; that MUST include cutesy animated effects like the dot-dot-dots representing a passenger plane's trajectory over the country, to say nothing of the gigantic red valentine glowing from the office windows of the Empire State Building. (That being said, *Sleepless in Seattle* IS beautifully photographed by Sven Nykvist, long-time cinematographer for Ingmar Bergman.) The plot involves a young widower (Tom Hanks) and his 8-year-old son who have recently uprooted to Seattle from Chicago after the wife / mother's untimely death. Bet on it: she's recalled in flashbacks smothered in warm, sepia tones. After a year in Seattle, in which they live on some sort of fabulous house-boat thing or other, the bratty kid decided it's high time his dad got re-married, and so he calls a nationwide late-night radio talk show, in the hopes of fixing his dad up with a new wife. (What kid would do something like this?) Hanks gets corralled into talking to the show's host, reveals his sensitivity in lines that only women (Nora and Delia Ephron) could write, and soon finds himself the subject of romantic fantasies of women all over the country . . . including a newspaper reporter in Baltimore (Meg Ryan). Well, that's the movies. Fine. But what's puzzling is why Nora Ephron makes such a big point about how romance in Real Life never measures up to romance in movies (*An Affair to Remember* is the yardstick), when she has clearly made a film in which romance in Real Life DOES measure up to romance in movies, right down to the copycat plot finale. This seems to me far more cynical than Meg Ryan and her girlfriends cynically griping about romance. The real stuff is in the parts; the whole is rather a sell-out.
40 Less Apeealing.
I still liked this movie by Nora Ephron but it was more formulatic of a romance story. I personally liked When Harry Met Sally better. This movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is about a husband who has lost his wife and is depressed then calls in a shrink on the radio and gets thousands of letters. Of course there is always a snotty little kid that annoyed every one of his dates until he met the Meg Ryan character. They meet on the Empire State Building and they fall in Love. I also thought this movie had to many songs in it, they should have cut down. I like the DVD and the transition into widescreen. I always love widescreen.
41 One of the Best Romantic Comedies Ever!
I love this movie! Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan are perfect together. I love this type of movie where even where there is a sad moment that it quickly smoothed over so it totally feel good...like the old-time movies. It's timeless!
42 It's a classic!
Who could find fault with this movie? The Hanks/Ryan teaming is a sure thing. The whole play on "An Affair to Remember" is cute. The sound track is even great. It's a classic chick flick that is worth watching over and over.
43 Asleep in seat
Maybe I am among the few, but I call it as I see it, and SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE bored me. Sure, the Tom Hanks character's wife died, and that's tragic, but his feeling sorry for himself did not win my support.
I have nothing against blind dates. But if you expect me to believe that any sane woman will travel out of state to meet some sad-sack she heard on the radio, you've seen too many movies. Or at least one too many - SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE.
44 Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan give charming and sweet performances!
I still love this movie! "Sleepless in Seattle" is still one of the best romantic films that I have seen since...ever! The performances in the film were top-notch and the storyline was terrific! To me, this film talks about two things...fate and destiny. "Sleepless" focuses on Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks), a recently widowed father who, because of the death of his wife Maggie (Carey Lowell), decides to move out to Seattle with his son Jonah (Ross Malinger) to start over again. One night, Jonah calls a talk radio show, who asks Sam to come to the phone and explain everything. So Sam sat down and talked about everything that he and his wife had done over the past few years, how he loved her, and such. Sam's story was such a big hit across America that women have been pouring letters of comfort at Sam's home. The story has also reached the heart of a newspaper writer named Annie Reed (Meg Ryan). Annie is single, lives in New York, and is engaged to a man named Walter (Bill Pullman), who is pretty much allergic to everything. After hearing Sam's story on the radio that night, Annie believes that she and Sam are destined to be together, due to typical Hollywood romance from such films as, for example, "An Affair to Remember". And romantic charm and trouble ensues from there on as, for example, Annie goes to Seattle to sort of "spy" on Sam to see what he is like, especially with his son, etc. "Sleepless in Seattle" marks the second teaming of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan from their first hit, "Joe Versus the Volcano" in 1990, and before they starred a third time in 1998's "You've Got Mail", which is directed by "Sleepless" director Nora Ephron ("This is My Life"). And speaking of the director, she directed this film with a lot of heart, soul, and emotion. Nora Ephron's best work to date! "Sleepless in Seattle" has also the absolute best performances of all time from Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I kind of liked the way that Meg Ryan's hair looked in the film. To me, you don't get to see Meg Ryan with hair like that a lot. I like this film because it is one of those films where two people eventually cross paths continuously, and in the end, they meet each other for the first time and live happily ever after! I really hope that there is a sequel to this film in the making, but if there isn't, then I will still enjoy "Sleepless in Seattle" for years to come!
45 One giant leap for fantasy romance...
Would Bill Pullman's character (Walter) really be so nonchalant about losing his fiancee and letting her run through the streets of New York to the Empire State Building to meet someone who might be a possible homicidal maniac? -point blank, NO. Sleepless in Seattle doesn't succeed on reality, it captures our hearts in fantasy. A couple, or a single person will find this both a tear-jerker and a means of hope. This is one of the truly blessed movies sharing company with "Ghost," "Indecent Proposal," "When Harry Met Sally," and "You've Got Mail." A great story for couples, and a healthy story for singles.

46 Sleepless in Seattle
This movie is really about the magic of the romance, a special comuncation between people than one day will be together, because was writting in the stars....Meg Ryan has a wonderful interpretation , about one woman than feel your truely love in the another side of the country. She really trusts in her intuition, like the little boy. Tom Hanks always a great actor,he is very good in this movie, unhappy se could not read what was writting in the stars because the pain in your heart was very strong...But, happy end....The smart little boy helps his father, end the love happened for him once again.
47 if I had 3 thumbs they'd all be up!
This movie is, if not already, a classic.
Sam, Annie and Jonah are wonderfully quirky characters that mesh together like it was..... "magic".
Must see if you like "An Affair To Remember" with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr!
48 Chick Flic for Women as well as Men
I cannot stand "Chick Flics" at all. My wife cannot force me to watch Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding and the like. However anytime she pops this movie in I won't hesitate to sit right down along side her and watch the movie from beginning to end. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are superb. The movie doesn't have that big time romance that many women seem to watch this type of movie for. However it is a soft-spoken light hearted comedy that is thoroughly enjoyable for both the laughs and family atmosphere that this classic brings out.
"Sam" (Tom Hanks) is a widower now solely taking care of his son "Jonah". He decides to move from Chicago to Seattle in search of a new start, however after a year and a half hasn't come close to recovering or starting over. Jonah phones a radio psychiatrist to try to be able to help his dad. 3000 miles away "Annie" (Meg Ryan) is listening to the radio and is touched by the story. She's not alone...thousands of other women are dying for Sam's number and want to meet him. After a time, Annie decides to write Sam herself and before she knows it she's falling in love with a man she's never met. Whats more is she is engaged and soon to be married to "Walter", a dull business man who is allergic to everything....EVERYTHING!!! Annie finally decides that to truly know what she wants she must atleast meet Sam in an attempt to find out if they will ever have a chance of falling in love. Sleepless In Seattle brings a smile to my face everytime I watch it.
49 Very romantic
Very romantic but not cheesy , with acceptable performances by Hanks and Ryan. To tell you the truth I like "you've got mail", but because of that I also bought this one.
50 Love is a Journey of the Heart, not the destination.
Tom Hanks is the consumate actor, no matter what he does these days. Meg Ryan is an actor to sit up and take serious notice, be it drama or romance/comedy. She IS a sweetheart. Together they are chemistry, they ARE Magic! While some of my fellow reviewers would have loved to see more of them together on the screen, I counter that by saying that 'finding' each other was THE challenge and worth the trip. A recent widower and a soon-to-be bride have destiny intercede and thus makes this Ephron effort one of the best around. Rosie O'Donnell is impressive with her comic relief as best friend to Meg Ryan and Bill Pullman carries himself with style and class, as Meg's fiancˇ. Rob Reiner is ..well..Rob! And perfect is his role, supporting Tom! This movie is about finding love again. Or maybe finding it for the first time..who knows? It is warm and full of what makes the heart joyful, weep, despair, grieve and joyful once again. We can each look within and see some trace of loving and losing..may not always be pretty...but this film is and more! Give this movie a try..you may enjoy it enough to see it at LEAST once more (unlike yours truly, who lost count after 50!!) If other viewer/reviewers believe this movie is 'syrupy', maybe s/he have never really loved and lost at all. The sound track gives credible support to the message of this movie and worth owning as well..good stuff! This is a truly 'feel good' movie. The actors do it justice ++; Nora Ephron displays to the world that she is a master at touching the heart!
51 One of my top 10 movies of all time
If you ever believed that there is one special person out there, just for you - and you just haven't met him/her yet - you need to see this movie. Hopeless romanticism is not just for the young ! You could be a middle-age parent and still want/need to meet that one special someone, and no one does it better than Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. This is one of the ultimate love stories of our time. You feel the yearning of their souls and sweat out their doubts and anxiety. I loved it !
52 Sleepless in McAllen, Texas
This movie is the epitome of all that is good for those of us who are truly in awe about our partners in life. Everytime I see this movie, I fall in love again.
53 Excellent romantic comedy!
Tom Hanks stars as a widower (Sam Baldwin), who along with his son, is looking for a wife. The son (Jonah) phones in a radio psychiatrist and then puts his father on the line. Women all over the country fall in love with him. The movie is particularly about one of these women named Annie, played by Meg Ryan.
After Annie's friend sends a letter for her (unknowingly), she receives a reply and believes that Sam is the man for her. Following a failed trip to Seattle, Annie soon decides her and Sam were never meant to be. Jonah, Sam's son, then sends a letter to Annie to arrange a meeting time and place.
I found this movie to be an excellent romantic comedy. The acting is great and I have no major complaints with the movie. My minor complaint is that it seems to be a little slow moving at times. Although the story is incredibly coincidental, it is still a great movie. Strongly recommended!
54 The Best Romance Movie Out There
I saw this movie on TBS Superstation last night. I'd never seen it before, and I was excited to watch it, seing that Tom Hanks is my favorite actor. Well, after watching the movie I'm a big fan of another actor-or actress;Meg Ryan. I had seen her in other things but after watching this movie, I see why she was called "America's Sweetheart". Her character may not have its drawbacks, but that'a why I liked her so much. Annie[Ryan] is so sweet and likeable that you can't help but love her. It was cheesy, but I liked how she got so into hearing Jonah on the radio, she kept cheering him on as he was talking and I thought it was cute how she cried when Sam talked on the show. I wasn't diappointed with Hank's acting either, and Rosie O' Donnell was great also. But I really noticed Meg's performance, and that's the movie that made me a fan. I really liked the ending, it wasn't the typical romance ending at all. My only regret is that Sam and Annie didn't spend more time together. But overall the story worked really well, and it should be considered a classic.
P.S. I really liked Meg's hair in this movie. It's been short as long as I can remember, but I thought she was so much more pretty with her long hair. Oh, well.
55 GrEaT!
This is a great movie, a must see for all undergoing long distance relationships!

57 Christmas Magic
Some people have songs, my husband and I have a movie. We not only met in Seattle, my husband lived next to Lake Union, very close to where this movie was made. He actually saw them filming scenes from the movie.
You could say the roles were a bit reversed, being I was the one getting over a relationship and he was not really looking at the time. Having lived in Seattle for many years, I especially enjoyed seeing scenes from Pike Place Market and West Seattle.
Rosie O'Donnell adds to the wit with lines like: "You want to be in love in a movie." Tom Hanks gives a sensitive performance as Sam who lost the love of his life. He and his son Jonah, live on Lake Union. Annie (Meg Ryan) is caught up with plans for her wedding. She is engaged and not looking for love. Yet, as it so often happens, love does appear when you are not looking.
One night Annie hears a radio show where Jonah has called in to ask how his father could find a new wife. The radio host invites Sam to reveal his heart and Annie literally cries when he says how his wife used to make everything in his life beautiful. She makes a connection and starts fantasizing about a man she has never met.
The songs are masterfully woven into the story and provides a feeling of old fashioned romance, where destiny draws two lovers to one another. There is also a sense of family and how everyone has needs and desires. Jonah especially wants a mother. Annie and Sam don't really know what they want, but they do get what they need. I found that very true to life.
Wit, chemistry, laugh-out-loud humor and romance, romance, romance! Worth watching at least once a year during the holiday season!
Dreamy!
58 A Very Nice Movie with Very Nice Actors
I know that many people think this is a wonderful movie, but it seems very light to me. I like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, but their relationship seems so much less than the relationships between Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, or Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, or Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, or Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, or Dick Powell and Myrna Loy. I know I'm holding them to high standards, but many "Sleepless" fans act like this film is in that league. The story has no complexity and is entirely predictable. Actually, I like "While You Were Sleeping" better; the characters are less perfect and the plot has a few twists.
59 Just ok
A cheesy romance, entertaining with great talent acting in it. Worth seeing, but not something I am looking forward to seeing over. A mild recommendation.
60 Pure Romance
Regardless of how cyberspace has seemingly diminished it's size, the world is still an awfully big place, and it's impossible for any one person to occupy more than a minuscule portion of it at any given time. So it's imperative that individuals find that special niche for themselves, that little piece of the world that becomes their own, where they can live and love and engage in the pursuit of happiness. And once that "perfect" world is created, it's devastating when something upsets the balance, as in the case of this film, the death of a spouse. When the love of a lifetime is abruptly taken away, how does one recover? Can one recover? How do you go on when your heart has been removed? All valid questions that are explored and addressed in Nora Ephron's touching and romantic "Sleepless In Seattle," starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. The film begins on a somber note, with the funeral of Maggie Baldwin (Carey Lowell), respectively the wife and mother of Sam Baldwin (Hanks) and his son, Jonah (Ross Malinger). Maggie was the love of Sam's life, and inconsolable after her passing, he decides the best thing for himself and his son is to move to another city and try for a fresh start. So they head west as far as possible, to Seattle, where Sam remains unable to emerge from the funk of his loss.
Christmas and New Year's is especially tough on Sam and Jonah, and around this time Jonah happens to tune into a late night talk show featuring Dr. Marcia Fieldstone (Caroline Aaron), whose job is to help her listeners with their problems. Jonah calls her and tells their story, then takes the phone to his dad in the next room, and in deference to his son, Sam consents to talk about his situation on National radio. In the Baltimore area, writer Annie Reed (Ryan) is listening, and touched by the sincerity in Sam's voice, she cajoles an assignment that subsequently takes her to Seattle, where she attempts to hook up with Sam, a man she knows only as a needful, disembodied voice from the radio.
So begins a romantic odyssey that probably could only happen in the movies, but it makes no difference because in Ephron's capable hands, this story works, and it works beautifully. There's a line in the movie, in fact, that kind of sums it all up: Becky (played by Rosie O'Donnell) says something to the effect to Annie that, "You don't want love, you want "movie" love. And maybe that's why this movie is so endearing and enduring; it's about the kind of love you find in a perfect world, the kind of love everybody wants and needs (though few will admit it, even to themselves) but rarely finds, and Ephron knows exactly how to make it connect with her audience. It has to do with understanding basic human needs and knowing how to translate it all into a cinematic art form that will effectively reach those who see it. And Nora Ephron does it as well-- or possibly better-- than any director before or since, and as she proved later with "You've Got Mail," this film was no fluke; she knows her stuff, and she knows how to deliver it. It's intentionally and shamelessly sentimental, but rather than maudlin, Ephron hits just the right emotional tone, and it's perfect, from the romance to the humor she injects at just the right moment to offset the drama, to the music-- using just the right song at just the right time-- that does so much to enhance the story.
Having a great cast, of course, certainly helped her in her endeavor, beginning with Tom Hanks who, with his portrayal of Sam, demonstrates once again what a consummate actor he is. Few actors can step into any given genre of film and create a character that is so complete and believable every time out the way Hanks can. Some of his characters may share some traits and have similarities, but he manages to make each one unique, which is quite a feat. When you can watch Hanks and forget that you're watching "Hanks," you know he's accomplished something. As an actor he is remarkably giving, and so undaunted when it comes to using and exposing what he has inside. And his ability to circumvent any natural inhibitions makes him great at what he does, and it's what makes a character like Sam so memorable.
Meg Ryan, as well, is an accomplished actor who can play drama as well as comedy (check out her performance in "When A Man Loves A Woman"), but she really sparkles in romantic comedies like this one, and she is absolutely perfect for the role of Annie (just as she was for her role in "You've Got Mail"). She makes Annie a very real person, and through her we can empathize with Sam's situation, as she enables and allows the audience to experience what she is feeling right along with her. Ryan, through her character, makes that emotional involvement possible, and it's one of the strengths of the film. And like Hanks with Sam, Ryan makes Annie a character you're going to remember.
The exemplary supporting cast includes Bill Pullman (Walter), Rita Wilson (Suzy), Victor Gerber (Greg), Tom Riis Farrell (Rob), David Hyde Pierce (Dennis), Dana Ivey (Claire), Gaby Hoffman (Jessica) and Rob Reiner (Jay). Essentially a poignant and heart-felt treatise by Nora Ephron on life and love, "Sleepless In Seattle" is a film that offers a multitude of rewards if you are simply willing to reach out and open yourself up to it. All you have to do is let it in. Do it, and you'll be glad you did, guaranteed. It's the magic of the movies.
61 Incredible!
Anyone who does not find this movie absoulutely wonderful should be ashamed of themselves.I think that this movie is the most romantic movie that I have ever seen. There is just something so romantic about people yearning for someone that they have never even met and they know that they are made for each other.I just can't say how much I love this movie! It's also really funny(Rosie O'Donell is hysterical)and it has the best ending to a movie I have ever seen!
62 Excelent movie
Anyone who doesn't love this movie is nuts. It is the second best movie ever. I could watch it forever. If you don't like it, watch it again. And if youv'e never seen it, I feel sorry for you. Tom and Meg rule!
63 Hey its in my backyard
I got the movie because I live right above "The" house boat. So hey this was kinda neat. Apart from that the movie didn't really offer a lot. Most characters where very superficial and the plot was very shallow. Would not recommend it.

65 A classical scenario
Cute, nice entertainment. One know exactly what is going to happen but one stills wants to watch it till the end. Cute and for all audience!
66 Very superficial and unconvincing
This heavy-handed, unfunny comedy-drama was meant as nothing more than a tailor-made star vehicle for Hanks and Ryan. It's uneven, predictable, and bland. O'Donnell has a few good moments.
67 Very Sleepy
Sleepless in Seattle is a very boring movie without a doubt, so many people call this movie a must see and say its very romantic. I think this movie really lacks excitement there are so many slow points in the movie it makes me dopey and very sleepy. I really don't get the main picture here of a must see I mean you have to give it credit though of making sense its not the story that is pointless its the way it's told the movie lacks excitement and thats very important in movies it was o.k but it sure is not one of the best movies that I have ever seen. When Harry met Sally was a much better movie.
68 A must see for romantics!
I have seen this movie at least 20 times! This is one of the most romantics films ever. Tom Hanks is hilarious, as well as a sweet-sexy kinda guy. Meg Ryan is funny also. This is one you'll watch over and over again. The comedy is great. A definite must see if you're looking for a romantic comedy.
69 Believe in your fate!
This is just a wonderful movie. I can watch it over and over again, and I just love it. It's so optimistic and positive! You can find your soulmate anywhere, anytime, you just have to believe in it! Both Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks do a wonderful job and the soundtrack is perfect.
70 Best Romantic Movie:
There should be ten stars for this movie! One of my all time favorites. It is probably considered a "chick movie" by males, but I don't think there is a female alive who doesn't love this movie. The comedy is supplied mostly by the precocious little boy, (Tom Hank's character's son in the movie)and his little female friend, but there is some good comedic banter between Tom's character and his buddy, played perfectly by Rob Reiner. Besides Meg Ryan, the other female contingent is outstanding as well. Rosie O'Donnell is her usual witty self, and Rita Wilson (Tom's real life wife) plays his sister in this film, and she and her husband (husband in the film) supplies one of the really funny scenes. The love story that unfolds restores our faith in fate, some things are meant to be, and some couples are destined for each other, and will find each other in spite of all the odds and the obstacles that stand in the way. I can watch this movie over and over, and there are few movies that I can say that about. This is one among a handful.
71 The kind of love anyone could only dream of!
"Sleepless in Seattle" is a beautiful love story, which I recommend to any of the hoplessly romantic. When Sam (Hanks) becomes a guest on a radio call-in show, thousands of women send him letters of comfort to his loss of his wife. One listener, Annie (Ryan) becomes more and more convinced, that she has to meet Sam. Will they ever meet? Naturally it is rare for love to come about in such a way, but I do still like to believe that it would be wonderful. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks did an awesome job, they truly make a great couple. If you like this movie, I recommend you also see "You've got mail".
72 Romance is alive
This is a great movie. I would have thought that true love stories/romance died with the fine writtings of the early 60's. But here it is....a movie that can stand the test of time. It will always move you. Take your date to it...it is a winner for a romantic date. I have watched this movie numerous times and never get tired of it. It is one of Tom Hanks best pictures. Is it realistic...NO! Will you love it..Only if you have a heart! A must see....
73 Make someone happy.
This is an ideal movie to watch each Valentine's Day with your special someone. Writer-director Nora Ephron does a good job of blending the right amount of comedy, romance, and sentiment. Sam (Tom Hanks) and Annie (Meg Ryan) don't meet until the last scene, but who cares? Their uncertain journey to true romance is fun to watch. Additional things to like are the surprisingly effective performance of young Ross Malinger as Jonah and Rob Reiner's hilarious performance in a small part. All that popular music from the '40s and '50s is a definite plus. It all leaves you with a mellow glow inside, similar to the golden sunset reflected off the New York skyline. Recommended for multiple romantic viewing. To the guys reading this, trembling with trepidation about now, don't worry, there is enough laugh-out-loud comedy to keep you from feeling as if you want to decorate, or something. Besides, you can always go watch "The Dirty Dozen" for masculine healing. ;-)
74 IT'S ALL A WELL TRAMPLED CLICHE NOW.
I know everyone else in the world loves this movie. It is sacred to some people, and they would really rather that people leave it alone and never criticize it. I know that it is world-famous because everytime I tell someone I am originally from Seattle, no matter where in the world they are from... from New Zealand to Bulgaria to South Africa to Chile, they always make a comment (which they think is exceedingly cute) about "Are you sleepless?" Is it any wonder I moved to Iceland. (Now I just get asked, "Is it cold?") Meg Ryan is too cutesy. Tom Hanks is just too... Tom Hanks like. Clever idea, and it would be better if they had left this film to stand alone, but reteaming Ryan and Hanks for You've Got Mail actually kind of cheapens this film.
75 The best Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have made several great movies together such as "You've Got Mail" and "Joe Versus The Volcano," but in my opinion, "Sleepless in Seattle" is definitely the best movie that they have made together. Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) has been real upset and depressed since his wife died. Sam's son, Jonah (Ross Malinger) is just as upset, but he's ready to move on. Jonah wants a mom and thinks it would be best for his dad to meet a great woman. Annie (Meg Ryan) is from Baltimore and she has been recently engaged, but she's not exactly in love with her new fiance (Bill Pullman). Annie becomes obsessed with Sam after she hears him on the radio. Will Sam be interested in meeting Annie and even if he is, will they ever meet? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.
After you see "Sleepless in Seattle," you'll understand why it was nominated and why it won so many awards. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan both do a great job like usual, and the director, Rob Reiner did a good job with keeping the movie interesting with the changes of attitude. "Sleepless in Seattle" is mostly a romantic drama, but it also has a few parts that are funny. If you've ever liked any of the other Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movies or even if you haven't ever seen any of them, I recommend getting "Sleepless in Seattle." It's one of the best movies of its kind without a doubt.
76 touching ,warming and interesting
I like this movie very much because it contains something that we really need in our real lives.Tom Hanks is a good actor, he shows us what is the love between a son and a farther. And it is the very magic which brings Sam and Annie together. It's so fantastic but it's the very part that attracts the hearts.
77 More charcter study than romance
Clearly the inferior of the two Nora Ephron romantic comedies starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is nonetheless a fun ride. Doing what she would do with greater aplomb in YOU'VE GOT MAIL, Ephron takes cues from past romantic comedies and updates them for the Information Age.
It works not so much because of the innovation of the romance itself, but because of how the characters are drawn. Credit is richly due to Ephron and Hanks for creating a character so compellingly monogamous that even death doesn't quite part Hanks from his wife. It makes his ultimate meeting with Ryan seem at least as much deserved reward as movie inevitability.
There are enjoyable supporting characters here-Ross Malinger being the obvious standout. As Hanks' Cupidian son, Malinger is particularly effective. He's at least as much responsible for our understanding of Hanks' character as Hanks himself. It's a shame we've not seen much of him since this movie.
Still, despite fine writing and compelling characters, SLEEPLESS doesn't quite rise to the heights of its ancestor, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER. Perhaps it's because Ryan and Hanks don't meet until the last minute of the movie. Or maybe it's because there's no clever subterfuge which accompanies most great romances. Or possibly it's because it's not really about romance so much as changing one's life by taking a risk. Whatever the case, SLEEPLESS was a disappointment after Ryan's masterwork WHEN HARRY MET SALLY and a warmup for the much better FRENCH KISS and YOU'VE GOT MAIL.
Having said this, the Collector's Edition DVD is well worth buying. Great additional features include a fine director's commentary and a survey of Love in the Movies, given by LOVELINE co-hosts Dr. Drew and Adam Corolla.
78 Modern Love Story With Classic Romance Flair!
An 8 year old boy wants his newly widowed father to find a new wife, so the boy writes to a syndicated radio talk show psychiatrist for advise. Miraculously the perfect match for lonely dad, although living 2,000 miles away, is listening and persues the situation. -- This film makes many references to the 50s tear jerker "An Affair To Remember", and there are many similarities. "Sleepless In Seattle" may have a similar effect on the audience, although its predecessor is definitely dated by today's standards. If you're looking for a good cry and a sweet romance, look no further!
79 not bad but not good
well this movie has its moments of halarious bits and a great acting job from hanks and ryan. but they dont really build up to their eventual getting together. they dont even see each other till about 10 miniutes till the movie is over. but still its not all that bad but dont ecpect anythinh special from it.
80 A Heart Warming Good Time!
This is one of the most feel good movies of all time. Not only it stars two of today's top actors, but it's also a movie that everyone can enjoy, no matter how old the movie gets! I've seen Sleepless in Seattle so many times that I can't even keep track. If you have that special someone, then sit back, relax and enjoy this beautiful heart warming movie! Nora Ephron is a true Hollywood landmark. 5 stars all the way!
81 Way too pat
I re-watched "Sleepless in Seattle" within 24 hours of "While You Were Sleeping" so I have to say that "Sleepless" pales in comparison.
Tom Hanks is earnest, moving and believable in his depiction of a "guy who just lost his wife". The kid, "Jonah", could be worse, but then again he could also be a lot less nauseating. Meg Ryan IS just downright annoying.
This film is guilty of heavy gender stereotyping (please! I cried in the clown/church scene in "Brassed Off", not some dumb weepie). It was also somewhat disturbing that the potential partners Walter and Victoria are dismissed for, it seems, his allergies and her laugh.
The two stars I give this movie are for Tom Hanks' performance, and for some genuinely sweet scenes in it. Unfortunately, in a movie supposedly about the perfect couple, two ie. a couple of good performances are needed.
The idea of fate and the perfect match is one we all love, but surely it is a more powerful notion that relationships are built when two strangers get to slowly know and love each other, rather than some pre-determined guff. There is one scene in this movie, when Sam sees off Victoria and sees Annie at the airport. He is telling Jonah about how single people "try other people on and see how they fit" It is moving and true to life; however, in the next minute he does indeed feel a connection to Annie who he spots as a complete stranger in a crowd. Frankly, I prefered the first explanation.
For a really charming love story, I suggest "While You Were Sleeping". No sweeping statements about society and love, no putting-down of less fortunate characters or relationships. Instead you get a movie where both of the protagonists are pleasant, and which shows that relationships are based upon getting to know that you get along together - that the significant other is "someone you can laugh with".
82 A Cute Movie
I thought this movie was cute because the kid calls a radio station and says his Dad neads a wife. It was funny too. It's a really good movie.
83 Sleepless in Seattle: SE DVD Review: It's all good!
I have been a fan of Ephron's work and also of movies such as "When Harry Met Sally", "You've Got Mail"...love stories. I'm not sure how many times I have seen this movie but I love it.
The thing is I own the VHS copy and when the first DVD came out, "Widescreen Edition", I was disappointed. The reason is because it was just the movie and it was widescreen, that's it?
Well, not too long ago, they released a second DVD. The "Special Edition". Now, I'm happy because it's widescreen and it has quite a few extras but it wasn't in digital 5.1. I know this is a dialogue movie but I watched many dialogue movies that still use 5.1.
Aside from that this is the right DVD to get, especially if you enjoy love stories. I'm so happy to see the music video of "When I Fall in Love" by Celine Dion and Clive Griffin. Also, there are a few theatrical trailers. Also, they included subtitles from other three Asian countries (except Japanese...what's up with that?)
The commentary was very interesting. To hear Nora Ephron and her sister (the fourth writer in the movie) Delia discuss how certain things happen in the movie and especially how Tom Hanks did certain things to enhance a scene. It shows how good and how true this actor is for his work.
I know there were several cut scenes but I wish they included them in the movie. The featurette was interesting especially to see Adam Corolla and Dr. Drew of "Loveline" in it.
What it boils down to is it's better than the VHS version if you love the movie and it's definitely better than the previous DVD because it comes with more features.
If you enjoy love stories, this is one that will be a classic for romantics forever.
84 One of my favourite!
Aren't we all secretly hoping that there really is a match made in heaven out there somewhere just waiting for us? And that there are forces at work trying to get us together with the right person? Well, that's exactly what I believe, and I'm so glad Nora Ephron makes films that help our faith along, just like the books by Johanna Spyri ("Heidi") or Lucy M. Montgomery ("Anne of Green Gables"). Why don't we finally begin listening to the voices in our hearts instead of smothering them in all the turbulence the world offers us today?
This film is refreshing, heart-warming and wonderful. I can recommend it to anyone that needs rejuvenation. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are both wonderful actors, and I have immensely enjoyed the films I have seen with them. This one is no exception. Applause also for Ross Malinger and Gaby Hoffmann for their roles as Jonah and Jessica. If you enjoy romantic comedies, this one shouldn't be missing from your collection.
85 A movie men and women will like.
Tom Hanks plays a widower from Chicago who, because of the death of his wife, decides to start over in Seattle. Meg Ryan plays a soon to be married D.C. yuppy. Their lives couldn't be farther apart. Ryan hears of Hanks when Hanks' son calls into a radio talk show looking for help to cure his dad's depression. After hearing Hanks talk about how much he loved his wife and hearing the sadness in his voice Ryan begins obsessing over Hanks. Good fun ensues from there. Most guys will think that this movie is nothing more than a "chick-flick". I was of the same opinion and only watched it because I was forced to.` What sold me was Hanks' comedic preformance. This movie is truly funny. I could not stop myself from giggling throughout the film as Hanks struggled with getting back into the dating scene. So guys, if you want to impress your lady friend by not bringing home an action flick, this is one you will be able to sit through. And girls, if you want your men to sit through a romance movie, this is a good choice.
86 The Perfect Romance Movie
Tom Hanks, one of my favorite comedy actors, stars in this wonderful romance story about a woman (Ryan) who falls for a widower in Seattle when she hears him over the radio. The story is great and the supporting performances from O'Donnell and Pullman are excellent. I like the movie because the Empire State Building is in it. A GREAT ROMANCE FILM.
87 Love Story
If you like love stories, a good story line, and laughing, then you should watch this one. It is very entertaining, and you will enjoy it even after many viewings. It's story line resembles One Fine Day, but Sleepless In Seattle is much better.
88 Sleepless in Seattle: Special Edition DVD is great!
I have been a fan of Ephron's work and also of movies such as "When Harry Met Sally"...love stories. I'm not sure how many times I have seen this movie but I love it.

89 Great movie for all ages!
I first saw this movie when i was 11 years old and typically because of my age I wasn't into the romance genre. However I absolutely loved this movie and it touched me like no other! Meg Ryan was perfectly cast for the role and Tom and Meg are the best portrayed on screen couple ever! Romantic comedies have been my favourite film genre ever since and Meg Ryan has been my all time favourite actress ever since! I definitely recommend this movie to all ages!
90 How can you not love this movie?
Seriously, there is nothing better than watching Sleepless in Seattle with a loved one... if you're going to watch movies. This movie is the most romantic, cute and heartwarming movie in the world. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are such a cute actor/actress combination. Its almost a traditional valentines day movie, and at least one that you should see if you haven't before.
91 Modern-day classic
"Sleepless In Seattle" is the perfect romantic comedy -- an instant modern-day classic. It pays perfect hommage to the great Golden Era film "An Affair to Remember," while maintaining an appropriately updated feel. What strikes me most about "Sleepless In Seattle" is the amazing chemistry between its costars (Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan), a chemistry that is felt throughout the entire course of the movie -- a movie which uniquely finds the star-crossed lovers apart for the majority of the running time.
This film has become such a classic, proof being its frequent mention in pop-culture these eight years since it's original theatrical release (for instance, television series "ER" featured an episode entitled "Sleepless In Chicago," containing a heartwrenching scene involving two very popular characters, star-crossed lovers Hathaway & Ross). A must-see for all who love an uplifting, heartfelt, touching, and often times funny romance!
92 Nora Ephron Didn't Write This Movie
One of the reasons this film towers above Nora Ephron's other efforts is that the story and original screenplay were written by Jeff Arch. Ms. Ephron's contribution to the script consisted of tinkering around the edges, and a few food and sex jokes. I only point this out because Nora Ephron has a habit of taking credit for things she did not do. If you want pure Ephron, see the abominable "Hanging Up." As for this film, thank Jeff Arch with an assist from David S. Ward.
93 Love in the movies...
Nora Ephron says (in the soundtrack liner notes) "This isn't a movie about love - it's a movie about love in the movies." Keep this in mind, and you may enjoy this movie as much as I do (it also helps to be a woman); however, if you try to see it as a serious and realistic discussion of true love, you will definitely be gagging for the last 20 minutes or so, if not long before. I saw the regular DVD (as opposed to the "Special Edition" DVD) - did not see any problems with the transfer (although I'm not an expert). There are no special features on this DVD *at all* - the menu just gives you the movie and chapter selections. Since I was able to get this disk at a substantial savings over the Special Edition, this is fine with me - I loved the movie, but don't see a need for director commentary, making of, etc.
94 Yaaawn...
After watching this movie I had the queasy sensation that I'd overdosed on marshmallows, like blah...It has no substance and zero personality. Talk about overrated! A bunch of people overacting (Meg at her cutesiest) and trying to get through their shallow and meaningless scripts without falling asleep. The one thing it did for me was wish I'd watched An Affair to Remember instead.
95 good film
i really enjoyed this film.i felt the Chemistry of Meg Ryan&Tom Hanks.i didn't know if Meg Ryan could be in a romantic movie and pull off the Chemistry that she did with Billy Crystal in when Harry met Sally.but she did with Tom Hanks.it's a cool Laid-back film.
96 Only Romance I will Watch
I'm not much for Romance films, but this is my favorite. My wife can't believe I've actually watched this more than a few times. Even though Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks spend very little time together on screen, the film makes you feel that they are spiritually connected throughout. The suupporting cast of Rosie O'Donnel, David Hyde Pearce, Rita Wilson, and Rob Riener add much more than their short time on the screen. No doubt Meg and Tom are the best match since Spencer tracy and Katherene Hepburn. Also, the young boy is one of few child actors that looked like he wasn't trying to act, but rather appeared natural.
97 Seattle looks GREAT here!
I live in Seattle, and this movie was a great change from seeing all of the bad publicity that Seattle has gotten lately. I am a fan of all the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan "pair" movies..."Joe Versus the Volcano," "Sleepless In Seattle," and "You've Got Mail." This movie was witty, funny, and cute. Throughout the whole movie, when they showed Seattle, my dad was like "that's by my office" and "I went there!" Tom and Meg are a great team and I really hope that they make more movies together. They create a chemistry that cannot be matched! See this movie!
98 An American Classic
My wife and I enjoyed this movie so much that it actually inspired us to MOVE to Seattle from Boston! This movie is a true American classic that will be enjoyed for generations. Tom Hanks is the Jimmy Stewart of the nineties (and then some)! A genuine 'feel good' movie!
99 Sleepless Gets Mail
Written & directed by the same woman who wrote & directed "You've Got Mail", has same fantasy quality, same song, and even the same bit actor or two in both movies. While Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are a combination made in Heaven, first watching "Sleepless" then watching "Mail" it was as if one should be Part I and the other Part II (the sequel).....Don't get me wrong, I love both movies....let's face it, when you pair Hanks & Ryan you get a chemistry that can't be matched, I don't care who you pair! It is definetly a "chick's" movie and as a "chick", I can honestly tell you that it is and always will be a movie to see with your favorite "hunk"....if you haven't seen it, see it. If you don't own it, buy it. If you can't buy it, rent it! Borrow it! Do whatever you must, but don't miss this movie! Afterall, fairytales can come true, it can happen to you, if you're young at heart....
100 You need see An Affair To Remember to GET IT
When I was a teenager, my favorite movie was An Affair To Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. My best friend, sister and I adored this movie. The depiction of the women in Sleepless in Seattle was us. We could recite the dialog word for word (and still can) and we debated the pronunciation of Deborah Kerr's last name (is it car or is it ker). When we saw these scenes in the movie, we knew that Norah Efron knew exactly how we felt. My husband also enjoyed the film, because he saw that my fascination with An Affair To Remember was not all that unusal. My recommendation is a double bill for a Ladies Night At the Movies: 1st An Affair To Remember, followed by Sleepless In Seattle. A truely fun evening!
