1 Not as bad as all these jerks are saying.
This a good boombox. The only problems I have with it though is that you have to use a remote to skip the cd. I use this manly to record cds on to tapes and it does that with no problems. I have had this boombox for a year now and it has not broken down on me.
2 A totally defective product on the CD part
After less than four months, the CD player failed by displaying the infamous "NO DISC" message. Sony should recall this product. Don't buy it! Its functionality is nothing close to its look. This is the second Sony product (the first one being a 32" TV) that has failed shortly after I bought it.
The better part of this deal was, when I called Sony customer service, I was told that I could send it for repair for $83 and they will cover the parts cost. And I was assured that it was not a joke!
3 Bad design choices
CD player is adequate; the cassette deck positioning & controls are counter-intuitive but functional; but the really annoying & unnecessary feature here is the never-ending unstoppable color-changing "HELLO HELLO O HELL" wrap-around flashing LCD display, which can only be shut down by unplugging the power. Some designer must have thought this display would look good in the showroom, but retailers know that if they ever turned these things on, no one would buy them - therefore purchasers don't see this useless & distracting waste of power until they get the thing home & regret buying it.
4 No timer recordings
This machine cannot make timer recordings from the radio because the Power On feature turns on the machine when a cassette is inserted and the record button is pushed. This is a major engineering flaw by Sony,a flaw my older JVC machine did not possess. My only reason for purchasing this unit was because my JVC can no longer record tapes.
5 One stupid "feature" ruined the product for us
We got this to play tapes for our babies because it looks reasonably appropriate in their nursery yet has decent sound quality unlike typical tape players for babies.
Unfortunately it has this annoying bright flashing display that comes on at random times when the unit is turned off, e.g. at night when the babies are supposed to be sleeping. I'd imagine people of any age would be bothered by this light flashing in their bedroom every night. It flashes random colors for several seconds then the word "...HELLO." scrolls across the display. When it gets to the end it wraps around and for an instant it says "O....HELL" which is exactly what I'm thinking: "oh hell, the idiotic radio is flashing again; I better unplug the piece of junk before it wakes the kids".
IMO, a product that you have to remember to unplug after every use is unacceptable.
-Bill
P.S. Product developers everywhere take note: You have to wonder why Sony added this "hidden feature". Presumably it's to make the product stand out while on display in a store (but my kids' room at 2am is not a store) and to call attention to a useless "advertised feature" of this boombox: the display can light up in different colors (I guess it can be red when you're playing a CD and green for the radio and orange for tapes or something like that). Oh boy. My guess is Sony had a perfectly good boombox design on the drawing board, then some over-eager engineer came along and said "we can get red/green/orange LEDs for only 5 cents more than plain red ones" and it all went downhill from there. A plea to engineers everywhere: don't add useless features just for the sake of adding features. You may think you're showing off but you're just being an idiot. This could've been a good product.
6 This may help those of you have no disk message problem.
After three months, I too had the problem that many have mentioned - no disc message. Here is what I have found helps to solve the problem.
When the no disc message shows, unplug unit for about an hour. Immediately upon restoring power (I don't use batteries so might be a good idea to remove them), reset clock. Whenever power has been disrupted do the same. This worked for a while then the message showed again. After some research, I found out that it could be condensation on the lens. Now, everyday, I leave the disc door open for about an hour.
So far, two months later, error message has not returned.
Hope this helps.
7 major reliability problem for this product
I have seen three of these and unfortunately owned one. All have what I assume to be a bad laser and all had the "no disc" message flashing. This is an initially pleasing product re: design & sound quality yet is an example of really bad quality control or maybe planned obsolescence that got carried away. I would buy precisely no Sony CD/ laser product unless it had a longer warranty.
8 sony and this boombox deserve less than 1 star for NO DISK
I have the Sony CFD E55 boom box. We've had it for a while, and my son uses it to play tapes. When I tried to play a CD I got the NO DISK message. Until I read the other opinions I thought this was an isloated problem. I could not find an authorized service center, and based on the number of negative reviews it is a shame that Sony won't do anything for the owners of this machine, warranty or no warranty. Guranteed that as I look for a replacement it won't be a Sony - I suggest that everyone else do the same. By the way, IF I COULD HAVE GIVEN SONY AND THIS BOOMBOX LESS THAN A ONE I WOULD HAVE.
9 NO DISC Issue with me as well
We got the item 2 months ago and we were very pleased with it. Three days ago I received the message "NO DISC" while trying to play CDs. Any CD will give me this message, there is no such thing like one CD is the source for the problem. Interesting as well is that I went back to fry's to exchange it and there is 0 left on the shelves. I presume that Sony did re-call or if they were all sold many, many are still to complain...i will search for service in my area to take it for repair...what a hassle.
10 "No Disc", my bum!
I asked for a small boombox for Christmas of last year for my bedroom because my main system is in the living room and I listen to music constantly. I used to have a Sony boombox that I had to junk when I moved because it was too bulky, but something like 10 years later it STILL WORKED! At any rate, I thought that this would be a good buy - cute, compact, still loud and Sony. That being said, I got this one for Christmas.
A few weeks ago (conveniently right when the "labor" part of the warranty ran out), the damn thing just STOPS playing CDs. So I thought, gee, maybe it's my CDs because they're scratched. Nope! I put A BRAND NEW CD in there and it still gave me that whole "No Disc" nonsense. One of the appeals of this thing is that it's also supposed to play CD-Rs as well, which some older systems have a hard time doing. Well truth be told, that is neither here nor there since it doesn't play ANYTHING.
The only thing that works is the radio and the sleep timer. I'm just annoyed because what on earth is the point of having a CD player boombox if it can't play CDs!??! I expect more, a lot more, from Sony and am extremely disappointed. I have to bring it in to be repaired, so that should be fun. (UGH!)
11 I feel so betrayed....
I purchased this product believing that SONY is a brand to be trusted. Unfortunately, just as many people have written in their reviews, after three months it stopped playing CDs.
I spoke with Sony's customer service, but the only response that they could come up with was "There seems to be a condensation problem. Keep the cover to the CD player open for about 30 minutes, and try playing the CD after that." Of course, even after following their instructions, the CD player still displays "No Disc."
It is winter and the air is as dry as it gets. I don't understand how there can be condensation in my unit. And, even if there is a so-called "condensation problem," shouldn't Sony design their products to be fully functional under regular household use? It is a CONSUMER electronics product, not some delicate piece of high-tech machinery that needs to be operated in a clean room.
The same "NO DISC" malfunction is being reported by so many people. There must be something wrong with the product design or to its manufacturing process. I can't comment about other Sony products, but this product definitely is of questionable quality. What a disgrace to the SONY brand.
12 on the contrary
I based my decision to purchase this unit not upon user reviews, but upon my experiences with the Sony CFD-E75Liv which were good. To my inspection, the only differences between the '75 and the '95 are; that the '75 has a more sophisticated remote while the '95 has a backlit display and speakers ported for bass. I gave the '75 to my daughter and bought the '95 because I found the backlit display particularly suited to my style of use. (PM) Over nearly a month's worth of use I've had no trouble playing store-bought CDs and after a trial run of several homemade discs representative of various burners found only one CD which brought up the "No disc" display. This was of little consequence to me because the disc stored music I would just as soon have my machine reject anyway. The digital tuner pulls in even weaker stations well, even in areas of the house which are prone to poor signal. MP3 compatability would have been nice, but the burner software I use converts MP3 to CD format. I do, however have an aging-but-still-servicable collection of some fifty or so cassettes and would like to have seen an auto reverse player. Also, how much trouble would it have been to keep the remote from the '75? Oh well, for all that it is it sounds great and has met my needs more than adequately. I would buy this product again.
13 DO NOT BUY!
I thought Sony was a reputable brand and that's why I bought this CD player/radio. My husband and I solely use it and after a couple of weeks the CD player does not work. It keeps saying that there is NO Disc. Sony is horrible they should re-call it. This is the third Sony electronic item that I have purchased that has broken down in a short period of time. DO NOT BUY!!!
14 A fine inexpensive boombox
I first want to say there is not a problem with this product not reading discs. When the system says "No Disc" it means your batteries are low/dead. It clearly states this in the instruction manual troubleshooting section. When it says "No Disc" and the batteries are low, you can hear that the system doesn't even have enough juice to spin the disc, thus the error message. This happened to me, and I simply recharged my NiMH batteries (sold seperately) and it's good to go. I feel if people acutally read the instructions, this would have a higher rating. It's does go through batteries fairly quick, so pick up rechargeables (6 size C).
The sound quality is fine, but nothing spectacular. As I read in another review, it's better than a clock radio but not as good as a small shelf system. This seems to be pretty accurate.
For the price, this is a good little boombox, don't let the previoius posts about skipping discs scare you away.
15 Cool Looks, Junk Quality
CD player started failing off and on after a few months. I thought it was scratches on the CD discs. After a few more months it stopped reading any CD discs. I cannot find the receipt, so the warranty does not help. Cost for repair at Sony repair center is $109. A quick review of comments on the internet shows that this product has frequent CD failures. Don't take chances. If it is for your kids, don't suffer their disappointment. Buy a different model.
16 Faulty CD Player
This CD Player looks great. I bought it for my newborn's room. After one month, the CD player kept displaying "no disc". Not worth the money. Do not buy this Sony product.
17 Shame on Sony!
This unit is a Sony, it looks great for kids, sounds OK, but don't let this fool you.
As for most buyers, the CD failed after 2 weeks!
Sony should recall this product.
DO NOT BUY!
18 i realy like it
It's my first boombox (Sony).
I've tried Panasonic,Aiwa,
they didn't have what this portable has-both sound & looks.
19 Good for 2 months
Great sound, but after 2 months, the CD Player dies on you(I'm not the only one). Spend a few extra bucks and get different boombox.
20 Fragile
Nice looking system and no complaints about the sound, but what I'd recommend is thinking twice before you buy this if you have small kids or will have it in a rough environment. It's built for style not rigor - in retrospect you can tell this from looking at the construction. My son pulled the cord so it fell off the table from a height of maybe 3 feet and now the CD lid won't shut. It's probably a 50 cent part that needs replaced but for the cost to repair it I'll just buy a new unit. I had an old panasonic box for 15 years that put up with much more abuse than this box.
21 Records from the radio, too
Although the manual never says it in so many words, it is possible to program this unit to record radio programs to cassette tape. The digital tuner and on-timer round out the capability to perform reliable timed recordings. The earphone jack can directly feed a sound card for capturing from the radio or cassette, but the AM radio picks up a lot of static from the computer if it is in the same room. The oval shape and lack of a handle detract from its portability as a boombox.
22 A Lemon
I bought this in June 2003. In August it stopped playing cds. Luckily my warranty covered fixing the repair. However, upon return I noticed scratches on the unit. When I called to complain, they said that the unit came into them as "Fair". Considering I got the unit 6 weeks earlier and it has been on my desk the whole time, I would not considered it "fair". Whatever! This month, November, the antennae literally just fell off. Mind you, I usually listen to cds so I don't touch the antennae. Sadly, the warranty does not cover the repair. The unit seems to me to be very fragile. Not a unit I can recommend.
23 Good price, Good quality
I have been looking for a good quality boombox at a reasonable price for a while. I am really pleased with this Sony Product, the sound quality is great, it has easy to use features and comes with a remote control. I was disapointed with the lack of radio signal. Overall it is great. So if you are looking for a boombox that looks good and sounds good, go for this one.
24 Very good purchase.
I was very happy with this product. It gives very good sound, and the bass is wonderful. The remote is especially convenient, letting you play, pause, stop, and skip through CDs, as well as letting you listen to the radio. The radio reception is great. One feature that I love is the jog wheel, the silver wheel in the middle of the display. Instead of using buttons to skip through CDs and go through preset radio stations, you just rotate the wheel (which is actually sort of fun) until it comes to where you want it. This is especially convenient when setting the time for the boombox's clock; there's no more holding down a button to scroll through minutes, and then going one over and starting over again! Definetely worth the money.
