Sony's five-disc, progressive-scan DVP-NC665P/B DVD player gives you all the convenience of a carousel changer--continuous playback, play exchange, dual-format DVD/CD performance--as well as quality features like progressive-scan outputs with Precision Cinema Progressive technology and cool enhancements like Sony's Precision Drive 2 system for playing damaged discs. The DVP-NC665P/B plays just about any disc out there, from DVD-Video to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW, in addition to playing hours of music from MP3 files burned to CD-R/CD-RW discs.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP-NC665P/B stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs through Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive de-interlacer (scanning) with 3:2 pulldown processing. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.
DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.
Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for a simpler connection to a compatible AV receiver (but be aware that digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).
Precision Drive 2 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less-than-perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs. Past generations of Precision Drive technology were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible. This newer system simplifies the process by moving just the lens (instead of the entire optical block) for faster and more accurate error correction.
As soon as you hook up the DVD player, a special Quick Setup screen appears ready to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for up to six discs.
Other playback features include 10-second instant replay, DVD/CD Text display (with applicable discs), a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, as well as Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes.

1 Started out working great.....
This is the second Sony dvd player I have owned. The first lasted over 3 years, and then all of a sudden it stopped being able to read the discs. I assumed this was a function of it just being old, so after a lot of research I decided to by the 665. After just over a year, it started doing the same thing as my old dvd player -- I could hear it spinning the disks in an attempt to read them, but it would then say "No Disc". I contacted Sony, who wanted me to mail it out to Texas and pay an additional $80 to have it assessed and then they would let me know how much it would cost to repair it. After weeks of trying home remedies, I decided it would be cheaper to just buy a new one, but it certainly will NOT be a Sony dvd player.
2 Everything I needed
This is one of the few DVD/CD changers that I found by Sony that would shuffle songs across all 5 discs. (which my old CD player would do) Easy to hook up, and easy to set up if you follow the directions in the quick set up screen. Concerning the brightness of the blue LCD text screen on the front of the player (it really is not any brighter than any other machine I've seen).....you can dim the light by going through the Custom set up screen. Just look in the index of the manual for more details.
3 Very satisfied with dvd player...
I read the reviews before buying, both positive and negative aspects. After purchasing the unit, I do have to agree that the blue LED light Sony placed on the front of the player is a bit bright and annoying, but I'm still pleased with the purchase. The picture quality is excellent and I really like the feature that the unit will remember exactly where you left off on a given dvd if you switch disc, turn off the unit or press stop.
4 I wish I read the reviews before I bought...
I am also having the same problem other reviewers have commented where it seems to do a slight skip between scenes on certain DVDs. It is slightly distracting, not terrible but it has gotten on my nerves. I know other people who have purchased much cheaper players and they perform a lot better. I thought I was getting best quality based on the Sony name and instead I get some bizzare problem which is in all the players in this model.
5 WHAT A DIFFERENCE FROM THE NC600 3 YRS AGO!
Wow, I just replaced my Sony NC600 that I paid $250 just 3 years ago with this model (NC665P)that I paid $159 yesterday. What a freakin difference! It's better in every way. I hooked it to my 60" NON-digital ready Mitsubishi rear-projection TV so I was unable to utilize it's progressive scan feature. But even using this player with my iterlaced TV made a MAJOR difference. I instantly noticed the sharper, warmer, more saturated picture. Text was sharper and motion was less jittery and blocky. Then I played some CD's and was WOWed. The high end of the music was far more detailed and airy. Vocals were stunning. It sounded "faster" and far more dynamic than the NC600 that it replaced. I could also exchange discs while one disc was still playing. Then I discovered after removing and then reinstalling DVD's in the carousel that the player remember exactly where I left off and began playing it. Apparently the leave off point is stored in memory. Then there are also various setup menu options to improve the picture quality, detail, blackness, color, and a custom mode. I used the digital coax out jack to my Denon receiver for audio, and used top-of-the-line M1000v Monster Cable for component video out cables ($300). I never knew $159 bucks could buy so much and be such an improvement over the technology that was just a few years old. Bravo Sony!
6 Does what's needed for a lot less...
I bought this player to replace my ancient 5-disk CD player. I've never owned a DVD player before and didn't really expect to need that aspect of it--we have TiVo and a vast VHS library, so why do I want to switch formats? But time marches on and it's clear that I need to start migrating to DVD.
Let's start with the music part: As a CD player this unit it flawless. It does everything my Stone Age TEAC CD player did, silently and effortlessly. It's not unattractive and it's lower profile than most. The blue light bulb in the front of the unit is a slight annoyance (I don't really need my CD player to be a nightlight).
Hooking up is quite easy. It was a bit of a chore for me because of my TV/TiVo/amp setup: I play the TiVo box through the Amplifier to the TV, but the amplifier only offers a single video input. The DVD and the TiVo box both want to use the same line to the TV and neither offers the ability to "pass through" a signal. Both want to be on the end of the cable. However the unit itself hooked straight up and was playing in five minutes.
As a DVD player this unit does it all and plays nearly every strange acronymed disk you can find. I did choose this over a similar "V" model that can play some other funky music disk formats you've never heard of. So be sure you don't need that. I've had no bad playback problems. Great unit.
7 Sony DVP-NC665P 5-Disc DVD/CD changer is off the hook!
I bought this player at Best Buy on February 25, 2004. Let me tell you, I like it better than the Apex DVD player I have. It is quieter than my Apex. It holds up to 5 DVDs or CDs. It even plays MP3 discs. It is also a progressive scan DVD player so you can enjoy the best picture on a High-Definition Television. I like the resume play feature it has. For example you were in the movie for about an hour on "disc 1." You change to "disc 3," to watch a different movie for about fifteen minutes. You switch to "disc 1," it will resume play from where you left off in the DVD. The player also resumes playback from last stop when you turn the power back on (on all 5 DVD discs). You can enjoy the TVS virtual surround sound if you are only using a two-channel audio system like your television or stereo. This player is excellent for only $180.00. The only con is that it doesn't have the "zoom" feature like some other players. Other than that, it is great and is still running strong.
8 Sony Top Notch Quality
Sony products never disappoint me. This five disc DVD player lives up to Sony's reputation.
9 Very good player
This player works very well with DVD-R and DVD+R.
Also CD-R sounds perfect with my Panasonic home theater.
Sony products are more reliable then others.
10 Don't Buy
Nothing against the product except that I would get the NC685 given the reviews I have seen. My real complaint is with Amazon and their sales practices. This does not come from Amazon and if they do not sell it they will not offer you any customer service. I order the 665 inadverntantly as I meant to order the 685. Less than 2 hours after I ordered the product I called up to say I made a mistake and that I wanted to buy the 685 (more $ so no problem I thought). They said they already placed the order with the merchant and that ehy could do nothing for me as I had to call the merchant. The next day I had a tough day at work and did not call the merchant until 2:oo p.m. (there only open from 9:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. or I would have called them when I hung up with Amazon the previous evening). I was advised that the item had already shipped and they could do nothing for me. The only thing that they could offer was to refuse the package and they would provide me with a full refund. They forgot to mention that they would still charge me the $20 shipping and handling. All said and done I might as well have gone to my local electronics store as it would have cost me around the same price. My advice, DO NOT PURCHASE FROM AMAZON IF THE ARE JUST GOING TO SEND YOU TO A THIRD PARTY VENDOR AND TAKE NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR THE PURCHASE.
11 It looks good
It looks good in the store and out of the box but after I hooked it up and starting playing movies it would skip not on everything just certain movies and Tv shows it s a wierd skip ownly happening during scene changes it would leave a "ghost" of the previous scene in the new scene very briefly.I took it back to the store figuring it was just this unit but the next one did the same thing.I cannot recommend this product!
12 Bad perfomance
This player has a universal problem i've found out sometimes it skips from one seen to the next leaving a bit of the previous seen inbeded in the next scene very iratating. It only happens on certain disc example if you are a stargate fan any disc from all 6 seasons that are available will do this skipping, jumping, slow mo,weird thing abot every 30 seconds sometimes more often. Not just stargate seasons but alot of other dvds have the same prolem especially TV to dvd shows.I took this player back twice and all three units did the same thing.I went online to some other electronic buffs and found out this is how it is with all models,it also does not display the title or chapter you have to press a display button on the remote for that. Some who buy this may never have a problem but if you watch dvds like stargate, startrek, csi, alias and other tv to dvd programs you WILL HAVE VIEWING TROUBLE.Save $20 dollars and buy one of the panosonic 5 disc players the 65 or newer 85 model the only diffrence between the two is the 85 plays dvd audio in 5.1 and the 65 model only play them in 2.1 other than that everything else is the same under the hood all specs. and engine drivers are the same. I wouldnt recomend this sony.
13 the picture quality was fantastic
I got this after having first tried the Samsung 1080I-720P with DVI connection. I have a Toshiba 51in. HD ready monitor. the Samsung was very expensive, and the picture quality did not impress as it should have (highest quality connections). Bare in mind, with that unit, if the DVD was recorded in the highter resolution, it was fine, but did little to improve older films.
The SONY on the other hand, (once properly set up, which can take some time if you unfarmiliar with the new technology) this machine is quite impressive for its lower-end price with a picture quality that rivals the samsung I paid twice as much for. For dvd's recorded in higher end resolutions, the picture comes out near perfect, while old recordings, such as tv shows (ex. X-files) are smoothed to improve quality. This method is also imployed on VCD and DVD-R's which can suffer in quality. I would highly recommend this product, though be warned. Improperly set up, and you'll not get the best of what this can offer.
14 Works OK, Poor Performance
I did a great deal of research to find a multi-disc progressive scan DVD player and finally decided on the DVP-NC665P/B. After completing the installation into my system, I was happy to see that the player worked, but disappointed in its video performance. The functionality of the player is great. . .quick disc changes, multiple scan rates, several progressive scan modes, and the ability to change out a disc while one is already playing. I have a Toshiba 50-inch widescreen HDTV (using component video inputs and progressive scan mode) and I am very disappointed in the picture quality. I actually received better video performance with my old Pioneer single-disc DV-525 without progressive scan. The picture appears grainy, the color is dull, and some digital "artifacts" are displayed during some action scenes in which there is a great deal of contrast between foreground and background objects. When the player changes layers on the disc, there is a pause that lasts approximately 1 second. I would recommend another player if you are looking for crisp, vibrant video. If you are only concerned about functionality and something that works, this might be a good choice for you.
15 don't buy without a widescreen TV at home
it plays nice and I was able to get rid of my CD player and use this for both CDs and DVD. However even though you can supposedly set the machine to zoom when playing widescreen DVDs on a regular TV, the zoom feature does not work. My old cheaper DVD player did this. And many of the settings can only be changed when you hit "stop", not while it is playing.
