Ready to turn any apartment or dormitory into a dance club or concert hall, Sony's 3-piece MHC-GX250 stereo packs a rafter-rattling 140 watts per channel through a hefty pair of 3-way, dual-woofer speakers. You get a 3-CD changer with play exchange (so you can swap two discs while a third is playing) and compatibility with not only homemade CD-R and CD-RW discs. The dual-well cassette deck offers full-logic performance and the FM/AM radio boasts 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) for ultimate tuning convenience.

A cool feature called Game Sync mixes the sound from the system's front-panel audio/video inputs with the sound of your favorite music--whether from CD, MP3 CD, cassette, or radio--so you're not forced to choose between game sound and music listening. You can have either one--or both. Maintain a composite-video connection between the stereo and your television, and you'll have instant video access right from the unit's front panel.

You'll find no cheap up/down volume buttons here--the MHC-GX250 sports an easy-to-grab, illuminated center volume knob that goes all the way up. Other great features include shuffle, program, and repeat CD playback, CD synchro recording, a bright, easy-to-read, color fluorescent display, and a Remote Commander remote control to keep you in full couch-potato mode.

Extensive audio processing enhancements include Sony's Groove bass enhancement circuit, as well as 8 preset equalizer curves with 3-band parameter adjustments to heighten the power of your music or tailor the sound for a specific location. Further, Direct A/V EQ adds 16 preset equalizer settings that cater to music (Pop, Rock, Soul, Oriental, Dance, Jazz, etc), movies (Drama, Action, and Musical), and games (Arcade, Adventure, and Racing).

Direct AV EQ also lets you store customized settings in three personal files. And, if that's not enough, the system even simulates surround sound for spacious music or movie effects. Finally, VACS (Variable Attenuation Control System) is designed to ensure superb clarity, even at high volume levels, preventing amplifier "clipping" and its consequent distortion.

What's in the Box
Main unit, two speakers, a Remote Commander remote control (model RM-SC3), remote batteries, an FM wire antenna, an AM loop antenna, and a user's manual.

1 Basic System
This is a very basic system with few options. The sound is OK and it was not expensive, but the tape recording is poor. Also, when recording, you can't listen to anything other than what you are recording.
Wish I had bought the Panasonic, this is not up to "Sony" standards.
2 JUNK
Within 9 months of buying this system the CD Player stopped working.......So far I have gotten no help from Sony
3 Excellent Sound Quality
Did a lot of research on several brands online and at the large electronic stores. For the price range this has almost the things I wanted...BUT... you will not find out until you open the box and read the instructions that MP3 audio tracks cannot be played on MHC-GX250. If that feature is not relevant, then this is a terrific unit. PS... bought this through Amazon which has the lowest price in town.
4 Great Product
I purchased the Sony MHC-GX250 at Circuit City about three months and I must say, it has been worth every penny. Simple and easy to set up, it took me all five minutes to get it up and running. The bass on this thing is crazy, which is great for parties and get-togethers. If volume is what you want, you'll definitely get it from this system. However, I primarily keep the unit my room and pop in easy listening when I'm laying in bed. Surprisingly, it delivers light music just as well as it does heavy. I just turn the bass off and switch it to either 'jazz' or 'soul' mode, and I'm sleeping like a baby. Since I bought it, there haven't been any problems with the unit. This is a great system for the price and I encourage potential buyers to search no further.

Quote of the Day:

If you wait long enough, it will go away... after having done its damage.

If it was bad, it will be back.

The Commandments of the EE:

(5) Take care that thou useth the proper method when thou takest the
measures of high-voltage circuits too, that thou dost not incinerate
both thee and thy test meter, for verily, though thou has no company
property number and can be easily surveyed, the test meter has
one and, as a consequence, bringeth much woe unto a purchasing agent.
(6) Take care that thou tamperest not with interlocks and safety devices,
for this incurreth the wrath of the chief electrician and bring
the fury of the engineers on his head.
(7) Work thou not on energized equipment for if thou doest so, thy
friends will surely be buying beers for thy widow and consoling
her in certain ways not generally acceptable to thee.
(8) Verily, verily I say unto thee, never service equipment alone,
for electrical cooking is a slow process and thou might sizzle in
thy own fat upon a hot circuit for hours on end before thy maker
sees fit to end thy misery and drag thee into his fold.
