1 How many pictures will it store?
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Sony MSA128A 128MB Memory Stick, like most 128MB cards, will store on average 142 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 106 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 64 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 51 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 40 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.
2 Good product but high price
I got this 128 MB Memory Stick because the one that came with my Sony Cybershot it's only 16Mb (only 9 pics) and this makes me believe that they intentionally give you a small chip so you buy another of their pruducts. My suggestion is to purchase a Lexar or another brand, because works as well and the price is lot cheaper, Any way I got this one and works perfectly, It's only the price why I rated only with 4 stars

3 works as it's supposed to
i bought this for a friend's sony cybershot digicam. it works as it's supposed to... which is to store pictures. i think that deserves 5 stars!
4 Slow
It's a memory stick. What's to write? It works.
5 I like it
I have one of these. I will be buying the two-sided ones because they have more memory, but if you are planning a short trip and don't want to take the chance on losing all of your photos, this is nice. It holds a bunch of pictures, and works faster than the ones from other companies. A great memory stick.
6 Good product, bad price.
Having good storage capacity for your digital camera is a must.
My Sony DSC-P72 came with a lousy 16 MB memory stick, so I was practically pushed to by this additional stick.
The product itself works perfectly well. Access time is very fast. Note however that some 5MB out of the 128MB in this stick are used for internal file system structure. This leaves you with "only" 123MB of user memory.
Unfortunatelly, the price is not good at all. Sony prices this sort of supplies very high. There are compatible products out there in the market that cost 30% less.
I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't been for the price.
7 Worth the Money
This memory stick, although a little pricey is worth the investment. I have a Cybershot P72 and with the 128MB stick, I can hold over 800 pictures (at 640x480)! I recently went on vacation and took over 200 high resolution images and some short video clips on this card! It is definately worth the money.
8 It's a memory stick.
I bought this for the TJ25. It may be overkill but what the heck.

It does put a drain on the TJ25. Have not played with it too much to gage the loss.

However, it is nice for a quick backup especially if you are going through an airport. A wand wave in India once wiped the memory on a palm!

It is costly and the main reason for the lower score. Of course the sales happen after I buy, but it does the job and I have tons of room especially for those large games you don't want to toss!

9 A must if you own a Cybershot
If you own a Sony Cybershot you need to get this product. I own two of them for my DSC-P92. For the price difference between the 64 Mb and the 128 Mb you should definitively get the 128 Mb. If you only use the memory stick for pictures this is the model that you need (you do not need the Magic Gate). This module will work with all Sony products with a Memory Stick slot, including the new devices with Memory Stick Pro. Transfer rates from this Memory Stick are good and the reliability is excellent. I have never experience data loss or any transfer problem using this product. Sony has been the major developer for the Memory Stick, so if you are in the market for one, and you can afford the extra $10 or $20 you should get the Sony product.
10 Sony is for me!
128MB - this is a great memory stick for the sheer amount of data that can be stored. If you are like me, you can also use it as a mini portable hard drive. With a SanDisk USB Memory Stick reader, you effectively have a small 128 MB hard drive that you can take with you. I can save WORD documents, or drawings, etc. to the Memory Stick just like a floppy disk, remove it and plug into my home PC. It's very handy for transporting anything you wish from one location to the other. It's worth paying a little more for the Sony name to know you have the quality you can trust from the brand you can trust! (visit www.holidaytyme.com)
11 The best memory stick`
This is the best memory stick.. The Lexar is great also but if there is only a few dollars difference I would defiantly go with the Sony..

13 AWSOME MEMORY STICK FOR CLIE
works great, i dont care what people say, u dont need a sony magic gate memory stick for your nx70v. really nice and ultra compact memory stick, though i cd takes up like half of it, nice also with the lock protection. 5 STARS!
14 ?
I don't know how you review memory sticks, but with the 128mb you get a couple thousand pics(600x400) on a stick.I suggest the 64mb. All depends on your individual needs i guess. But overall, it is a Sony and they work well(like always in my experiences).
15 Love that Sony
Is there anything nicer than having a single save format that works with all of my electronics? The answer is no. Take it from my camera directly to my computer or my Palm. The new handheld PlayStation will also use the Memory Stick format. I love that Sony. The only thing better than their Memory Sticks is the Memory Stick Pros!
16 a commodity
I think it's well worth buying a 64MB or, even better, this 128MB memory stick with a new Sony camera (that's what I did) but I don't see any reason to pay the premium in price between the Sony version and those made by competitors like Lexar, ScanDisk and others.

Sony will tell you that part of the speed of the camera depends on the way the in-camera computer can access the memory card, but I have read articles that say that is just a tiny piece of the equation. And from experience, I can say that I see no difference in quality between my Sony card and the one from Lexar.

In the end, I give this card only three stars for reasons not related to quality but to price. These memory sticks have become simple commodities, like rice or cement, and the deciding factor in any comparison shopping should be price. I would (and do) pay extra for Sony quality when it comes to digital cameras and other high-tech equipment, but I don't see a reason for it when it comes to memory sticks.

17 Slower than then 64MB one
I use the Sony Camcorder DCR-PC100 to take photos. When I use the 64MB memory stick, it is quick. When I use the 128MB stick, it feels like it is half the speed... that is not good especially if I take continuous snapshots... Sony should tell consumers these kind of things. Also, the Camcorder Spec says it is good for 1 MegaPixel photos. It is a lie. The image quality is like magnifying a 640 x 480 to 1 Megapixel. The result is coarse pixelation of the photo... I called the Sony customer support and they told me, "if it looks good on the view finder, then Sony's job is done." What BS. Sony, wake up and don't tell lies!
18 Sony 128 MB Memory Stick. Good Choice?
Depending on how many photo sticks you have and your accessibilty to a computer for quick erasure and down load, all memory sticks have a limited number of exposures. And depending on the size of your images the lower number you will get from a memory stick. Having that in mind, they are a great tool because you can edit on the spot, but unlike traditional film, you don't always know how many you are getting. And if you don't have lots of $ you most likely don't have lots of memory sticks to bring along for photo ops. Just something to keep in mind.
19 Adds great convenience and extra storage
My main use for this product is in a Sony Peg SJ30. Interestingly, 128 megs is the current limit for Sony memory stick technology, which is low compared to Compact Flash, which now go up to 1 gig of space. Those aren't cheap of course, being 2 or 3 times the price of most PDAs, but I'm sure the price will come down.

Anyway, that's a lot of RAM storage, and it's available if you need it. Smart Media cards, however, have even less, and are only up to 64 megs so far. The reason is that the controller is not located on the card, which is why they're smaller than Compact Flash. Really, since the Compact Flash is smaller than a paperback book of matches, I don't know why they bothered to make it that small, since I'd rather have the extra space, but oh well, I didn't make the engineering decision.

The nice thing about this extra storage for me is that the typical ebook which you can download free from several websites is only about 200-400k. That means you can store between 250 to 500 books on 128 megs of space. That's an entire library on your Palm PDA, which is pretty amazing when you think about it.

Most people will probably use this product in digital cameras, but the PDA use is what I need. I also wish there were read/write "drives" available for memory stick cards as there are for Compact Flash cards, which you can hook up to your computer to write to as well as read from, but the only thing available so far is a floppy-type adaptor, which, although it may work, probably has a very low data tranfser rate. Overall, however, this is a fine product, despite the proprietary Sony technology that limits its use to their products. The only reason I give it 4 stars is the Sony brand is a little more expensive than the SanDisk or Lexar products.

20 BUYER BEWARE
This is not the magic gate--the color of the picture is too light. The actual product is bluer---so I confused this with the MagicGate which is lighter--more a cream color. I could not tell from this picture so I ordered wrong product and got stuck with it!
21 Awesome product. Crazy Price
I'd reccommend buying Lexar or SanDisk purely for that fact it's about almost half the cost of a Sony.
22 Excellent way to take non stop digital images.
The 128 mb Sony Memory Stick is a must have for anyone who takes alot of digital photo's. I have a 2.1 pixel Sony Cyber Shot and I love it. The 128 mb stick allows me to continue to photograph without having to keep replacing the sticks. With my 2.1 pixel camera, I usually average about 140 to 150 pictures per 128 mb stick. The 64 usually yiels me about 74 pics. I definitely recommend you buy a few of these because you will spend more time creating then worrying about having to replace the disk and miss out on a good shot. I am going to get myself a few more of these. Especially now that the price is less then 1/2 the price they were originally.
23 can't wait for more uses
I bought the 128MB memory stick for my DCR TRV-30 mini-DV camera, which doubles as a 1.5 megapixel still camera. This is large enough to hold over 100 stills, giving me plenty of buffer in case I can't upload them to my PC right away. I've had no issues whatsoever. I can't wait until Sony or someone else comes out with an in-dash receiver\MP3 player that reads these memory sticks. It will be nice to listen to the tunes while bouncing around in the Jeep!
24 A wonderful storage option
...I recently purchased a Sony digital camera, and quickly grew tired of the limited space the 16mb card afforded me. I went ahead a shelled out the money for the 128mb version, and boy am I glad I did. At the maximum resolution I can store almost 70 digital photos, and at 640 x 480 res I can store more than double that. Since the media card is interchangeable in other Sony devices, this little card could be your best friend. It remains to be seen how long it will last before I wear it out, but so far I absolutely love it. It is worth the extra money. You could get by cheaper, but you'll regret it.
25 A technological wonder!!!
These little sticks are great! I have an NW-MS9 Network Walkman player and these things work great with that! I can store up to 3 hours of music on my player with this little thing and transfer music to my PC in a snap! Sony in the future will be coming out with the 256MB, 512MB, and then, the 1GB one, all by 2003! They are however on the expensive side, but these things are really great none the less! So small and compact! AND so versatile! These MagicGate Memory Sticks are wonderful! Hope this review was of help to you!
26 Peeved at first, but delighted with consistent performance
I was first peeved about having to be stuck with a predetermined Sony memory stick format. But after continued use in TRV900, TRV11 video cams and the Sony Clie PDA- I have to say I'm very happy with the memory stick's flexibility. I usually hate being stuck in a specific company format, but at least Sony did it right.

The transfer rate in the Clie is very rapid. Backing up the entire contents of the Clie takes literally a few seconds. The Clie has a program that allows you RUN programs off of the memory stick. This is not the fastest operating speed, but it is no worse than a Zip drive disk.

The size and reliability is unbeatable. Compared to a San memory card that has lost it's life after 1 year, the Sony memory sticks have performed flawlessly for pics, data, and application runs. Go for the 32+ MB and up - just like a hard drive, you think a realistic amount is adequate. But once you start shooting and using, you'll wish you upgraded for the bigger stick.

27 131 High res photos
I purchased the 128MB stick just before leaving for my family vacation to Mexico. I have a Sony DSC-70 digital camera... I shot every thing at a minimum of 1600x1200 resolution (suitable for 8x10 prints). As the title says, I shot 131 photos - never messing w/ film. I shot an additional 48 on my 64MB stick.
Flawless performance.
28 Sony Memory Stick...
This sticks are awesome, especially now that Sony has dropped the prices inline with Compact Flash chips. Prior to that, they may not have been worth it. I'm waiting for the prices to be reflected at Amazon, so that I can get more. Also waiting for the 256 Meg chip too!! Easy, simple to use, and stores a bundle. You can also interchange them with all your Sony products.
