Evelyn Tribole
Using the many tricks up her sleeve, nutritionist Evelyn Tribole can get just about anyone to eat healthy. Hate the thought of tofu? Try her Chocolate Marble Cheesecake, with tofu replacing some of the cream cheese. Her daughter did, and now she's a convert. Don't want to add fiber because it sounds so bland? Try her Dark Fudge Brownies, with puréed black beans giving each brownie as much fiber as a slice of whole wheat bread.
With more than 100 recipes that sneak fiber, calcium, and other nutrients into the diet, Stealth Health can turn even the most devoted junk food junkie into a health nut. For "vegetable haters" there's Chicken Chile Verde, which features finely chopped spinach masquerading as green chilis. For "fruit skimpers," try the Purple Cow sMOOthie with mixed berries and nonfat frozen yogurt. And if you're a "milk miser," drink up your calcium in the delicious form of Home Express Coffee Latte. (Tribole came up with these and other labels to describe nutritional problem areas, and you can take her diagnostic quiz to find out which one fits you.)
Each of the book's eight chapters features recipes, nutritional information, and charts showing five ways to "sneak" healthy foods into meals. And if you still need more convincing, Tribole weaves in the scientific evidence for the role of nutritious foods in fighting everything from cancer to osteoporosis to heart disease. Tribole, who has celebrity clients and has appeared on Good Morning America, says the way to get finicky children to eat healthy is to whip up one of her recipes without telling them the ingredients. "This approach works well with adults, too," she writes. "The basis of Stealth Health cooking is tasting is believing."
1 Healthy, yes; simple, no.
The recipes in this book are healthy but they are not neccessarily easy or quick to prepare. If you are cooking for others they may be fooled by the "sneak" ingredients but after all the shopping, chopping, & measuring entailed in preparing these dishes, the cook sure won't be fooled. Many recipes are very difficult to prepare without a food processor and some ingredients are not to be found in the average grocery store. I was hoping for recipes that required less preparation & simpler ingredients. The book was not a total dissappointment; the recipes were tasty but if you are looking for shortcuts to good nutrition, look elsewhere.
2 Yummy and Healthy
I have been wanting to purchase this book for a long time. However, I have been disappointed with other books that promised great tasting recipes for health and didn't want to waste more money. Finally,I decided to purchase Stealth Health through the used section of Amazon.com, which was a very good experience in itself. The good experience did not end there. Every recipe we have tried from this book has been delicious!!! My husband does not eat bran cereal, but did in The Date Nut Bran Muffins and didn't even know it(still doesn't know it). I used dates and nuts in half of the batch for my taste and raisins in the other half for his. I really dislike cauliflower, but couldn't even tell it was in the Twice-Baked Potatoes-and I was the one that prepared the potatoes. Both of us enjoy rice pudding. The Golden Rice Pudding and all of the recipes can be enjoyed without feeling quilty. As for the other Healthy Cook Books purchased in the past-they will be donated to make room for other books written by Evelyn Tribole.
3 Love the recipes!
This book is great! I've already tried three recipes and thought they were all tasty, esp. the Carrot Cake Smoothie! My only criticism of this book is that there don't seem to be many "quick" recipes, the sort that you can throw together in 30 minutes after a long day at work. The main dish recipes I looked at required a blender/food processor, a stovetop, AND the oven. For me, that's a little too much too accomplish after work!
4 Moms, Nutritionists, Dieters--Everybody Buy This Book
This book is by far the best book on eating healthfully. Why? Because Evelyn teaches you how to sneak "good food" (veggies, fiber, even soy) into "normal food". Yeah, we all know we should eat cruciforous veggies, more fiber, some soy, fruits, etc. But we don't. Evelyn shows you ways to pump up the nutritional value of foods you like--in a way that you won't even notice. Adding black beans to brownies is one solution--and it works (adds fiber, phytochemicals) and the brownies taste good, not healthy. She teaches you to puree cauliflower into your potatoes, so that you get the boost of nutrition. (I HATE cauliflower, but I don't mind eating it this way). All in all, I can't wait for more Stealth Health recipes. If you have kids, doubting husbands, or just plain don't like the taste of healthy food, buy this book. :) If you do like healthy food, this book will amaze you with how good healthy eating can taste.
5 Yes, there is a God!
I just can't believe what a miricle this book is! The kids have absolutely no clue that what they are eating is healthy for them. The brownies tasted so good that I just couldn't believe that they had beans in them! I am so excited that they are healthy, and they taste soooo fabulous. This book is truly precious. There are so many wonderful recipies that are wonderful, I wish I could give it infintiy stars
6 For those with fussy companions
I specially bought this for my fussy husband, to "trick" him into eating more veggies. Invaluable information on nutrition content and strategies for the fat lover, the vegetable hater, the soya sceptic, just to name a few. Sometimes it is necessary to "sneak" it in!
7 A Magical Cookbook
The very first day I received this cookbook in the mail, I tried 3 recipes. Everyone in my family has specific likes and dislikes. My husband hates anything with dairy but loved the Spinach Cheese squares. All my kids hate veggies but loved the Pecan Crusted Sweet Potatoes. They had no idea that these things were actually "good" for them because they tasted so wonderful. The cookbook is also full of tons of nutritional information that is presented in an easy to understand format. Great book!
8 Great Concept Great Recipes
Get this book even if you don't like to cook, the nutrition tips alone are worth the purchase. I love the recipes (at least the ones I've tried so far--onion rings, enchilada bake and the apple pear crisp.
9 From Brownies to Cheese Dip
All the recipes I have made thus far has been absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend trying the black bean brownies. The first time I saw that I thought it sounded too gross, but it is better then bakery bought sweets! The beans keep them moist and there's only 2tbs of wheat which can be omitted for those who are allergic to it, without sacrificing any of the taste. This is THE cookbook I'll be giving all newlyweds, it's that good.
10 You Won't Be Sorry with this Book
This book is great.
I've been reading (and making) Ms. Tribole's Recipe Makeover column in Shape magazine for years--and have always enjoyed the results. She doesn't dissapoint, with both great-tasting recipes and practical tips that you can start using today. I also like the fact that you don't have to run out to a special store for ingredients--you can start eating healthy just from your local grocery store.
11 Love the Sneak Idea--Great for Kids
I'm always trying to find ways to get more vegetables into my kids diet--this book has a lot of great solutions. The recipes are easy to make even for my picky family. I loved the Pesto Pasta Surprise and the Sunburst Soup. The pizza recipe has become our family favorite. I also like how the author described how she performed a nutriition sneak for each recipe---it helps give me ideas for some of our meal standbys. The nutrition information in each section is motivating, especially the studies that are scattered throughout the book.
12 Good but lots of reruns from her other books
There are lots of good ideas and recipes in this book BUT... first of all, I think the "sneak" theme is stupid; second, a lot of the recipes are repeats from her other books, with maybe the name and one ingredient changed. I have her earlier book "Healthy Homestyle Cooking", which is my BIBLE, and would recommend that book over Stealth Health.
13 i learned tons about nutrition and how to cook tasty meals
I never thought I would be able to "sneak" veggies past my kids but this book has some very tasty and undetecible ways of incorporating veggies, fiber, protien etc.
This was a very easy, informative and enjoyable read.
Thumbs up to the author!
14 Easy Tips, Great Recipes, Valuable Book
I only wish this book was written sooner! I love the practical tips like drinking a lowfat shake from McDonalds will give you a lot of calcium. This is an upbeat book that provides a lot of good information without being preachy.
15 Everything I've made from this book has been awesome!!
I bought this book because I don't always eat everything that I should, so I thought this would help. I now eat things that I would have never tried on my own. The recipes are easy to follow, fun to make and taste great! Thanks for a wonderful recipe book!
16 Good Information/ not so good recipes
While I found this book to be full of interesting information I question the taste of these recipes. I made the brownines, using black beans, and they were odd tasting. I think you are better off not sneaking beans into recipes, rather using them in soup and such.
17 great, simple, valuable ideas
I'm not intimidated by these recipes. These are the kinds of nutritional ideas that I look for in making nutritious food appealing and normal for my children. I like her "sneaky" ideas for adding unpopular but nutritious foods in places even my husband's fast food palate wouln't detect
18 Practical, useful and delicious key to nutritional meals
Having a toddler who is determined not to eat vegetables and a finicky teenager-- preparing nutritious meals that they will eat is quite a chore. This book is the answer! I just received it and have used recipes and the general principles to prepare healthful foods without the two of them even suspecting anything. The recipes are for foods that are common and easy to prepare. Some of the ingredients will amaze you (try the brownies) but the final results are delicious and nutritious. Well worth buying!
19 Great recipes and fun to read!
I have really enjoyed this book -- it is much more than just a cookbook! She provides tons of important facts about nutrition and her writing style is fun and informative. I couldn't decide what to cook first because EVERYTHING sounds so good. So far, I have not been disappointed.
20 An important book everyone should read.
I went to a health retreat with my wife over the break between Christmas and New Years and we were given a copy of this book. It was referred to a lot in one of the seminars. I was amazed at how detailed and indepth the book was. We were also given a course on Neurosync behavior modification which reinforces many points in this book. Given that psychologists put together the Neurosync software, that made me even more impressed with Stealth Health. I highly recommend you buy it.
21 Excellent!
I love this book. The book is full of nutritional advice that is actually useful. Best of all, the "sneak" tips offer a terrific, easy way to eat right without tasting the stuff you don't like to eat. And the recipes really are as good as they look in the pictures!
