1 Best man is not the best movie. It's kinda mediocre....
The Best man is not the best African-American romantic comedy. In fact it's not very good either. A shallow story about a writer who writes a book about an alleged encounter with the groom's bride years before the wedding falls completely apart due to a poorly written script that pushes style over substance. The characters personalities are so one dimensional that I didn't care about them or what happened to them when the groom found out about the encounter. The movie dragged on so long that the upcoming wedding was anti-climatic. It's a shame the writer didn't take time to add some depth to the characters and the story details because this had the potential to be one of the great African-American romance movies.
The badly written story follows Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs) Best man of soon to be married Jock Lance Sullivan (Morris Chestnut) who has published his first novel. Unfortunately, Harper's success is so unrealistic it becomes a major plot hole. Harper's book gets on Oprah's book club, and a friend Jordan (Nia Long) a New York TV show producer has the only advance copy. Harper wants to get the book back before his friends see it, because he's based it on real life events. But that's where the plot hole alls hurts the movie. Jordan wouldn't have the ONLY copy of Harper's book because advance copies are widely available to ALL members of the press. All they had to do is call the publisher and ask for a review copy. Publishers give these away for FREE to members of the press on request so they can write reviews of the book and promote it for them.
A series of mishaps regarding the book and the wedding build up to the long drawn out bachelor party Where Lance finally reads the book. Reading about the alleged past romance between Harper and his alleged bride, Lance goes off on Harper fighting him on the balcony of the penthouse. and the wedding is off. Harper tries to smooth things over so the wedding can go on in the weak conclusion of the movie dancing and smiling at the reception.
I had a bitter taste in my mouth watching The Best Man. Just like in "The Brothers", the depictions of "good black men" were not so positive. These guys may have money, but their internal character issues made them downright unlikable. Harper wasn't the nice guy the producers depicted him to be. He was an arrogant person who didn't care about anyone. He only wanted the book back to save himself, not protect his friends' feelings. If he truly cared about his friends he would have wrote about something else. Lance was a compete jerk. He didn't deserve to married the way he treated his bride. The Terrence Howard character was a womanizer and the other friend was just a dog in training dumping his girlfriend for a stripper. All the men objectify and degrade the women they are with and around. At the bachelor party the movies misogynistic undertone becomes an overtone and tarnishes the story. I kept asking myself: Where was the respect for the sisters? Why weren't the women shown in a positive light as well. As a black male, I hate to think this is the norm in the black community for men to act like this. These "positive" images of black manhood are unacceptable to me. Black Filmmakers have to DO BETTER.
As a Published author and struggling writer, I found this movie to be offensive in its lack of knowledge of the publishing industry. This lack of research in the writing of the screenplay hurts the plotline of the Best Man and ruins a good story. Most times first novels get very little support from the publisher and very little promotion by the media. It would be a MIRACLE for a first novelist to have their book wind up on Oprah's book club. The only promotion Harper would probably get would be from Jordan's show.
First time director Malcolm D. Lee helms a clunky film that runs twenty minutes too long. His boring visuals look more like New York City vacation slides than movie frames. The pictures he shoots don't tell us an interesting story about the lives of people we want to care about, in a city we want to live in instead, he gives us a random series of pictures in a sequence that barely tell us what's going on. Like a vacation slideshow you wind up bored to death hoping the film would end already.
Taye Diggs is terrible as Harper. He's supposed to be a nice guy, but Diggs' arrogant presence makes me hate the character he plays. Morris Chestnut's performance is bad here too. He's a robot just parroting lines without feeling or emotion. When he gets angry you feel nothing from him. The best performance is From Terrence Dashon Howard. TDH is great in almost every movie I've watched him in (Never 2 Big, Big Momma's House, Their Eyes were Watching God) He is truly a gifted actor who rises above weak material and weak direction and makes his characters into real people. He should be a bigger player in Hollywood than he is. Nia Long, Snaa Lathan and Regina King are awful here because Malcolm Lee gives them no direction and the script gives them nothing to do but be Black Barbie dolls dressed up in designer clothes. I wish African-American filmmakers would stop being so misogynistic and give talented Black actresses' three-dimensional character to play alongside the males because well developed women only help make African-American movies better. A whole generation of black actresses is not actualizing their potential because black male filmmakers won't write well-developed female characters.
If you're looking for a good romance movie, Get Love Jones or How U like Me Now cause you can do better than The Best Man.
2 Such a Great Movie......Just Buy It!
I love this movie! It's everything-funny, interesting, entertaining, realistic, humorous. This movie is about a guy who writes a book about his life, including his dirty laundry like sleeping with his friend's girlfriend in college. Well, his friend is marrying the girlfriend he slept with, unbeknowst to what really happened in the past until he is informed during his bachelor party the day BEFORE THE WEDDING! I know it's bad of me, but I loved the fact that he beat the mess out of him! He was well deserving of it. The best character, to me, was Quentin played by Terrence Howard. He was the one that knew about their past affair all along, and kept referring to it directly and indirectly through his very funny, sarcastic, and just "keeping it real" tactics. I loved his character-funny, charming, and spitefully devious through his little jokes and smiles and quirks that gave away what he knew. He was a little vulgar, yes, but that's what made his character. Nice ending to the film. Very worth it!
3 The Best Movie
This is one of my favorite movies. As a woman watching all of these fine men in that hustle scene is a bonus. I love the positivity of no gangs, no shooting and no stereotypical thug characters-just a bunch of sexy men with their unique individual appeal to a multitude of women.
Story line is a bit predictable but the soundtrack makes up for that. My only complaint is that Always by Stevie Wonder is not on the soundtrack-in the same way that Love & Happiness by Al Green is heard in a lot of movies but never makes the soundtrack.
4 The Best Man is one of the Best
Of course I am attracted to this movie because of Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, and the beautiful chocolate Morris Chestnut. Yet another attraction is that these characters are professionals, established, and have a storyline. I am happy that this movie was made. For every ghetto movie there needs to be 100 movies like this, to show that African Americans actors can do more than be on drugs, sell drugs, on welfare, and women showing their bodies. I love this movie. It is great.
5 I Can Relate
Me and my friends watch this movie everytime we get together. This a great movie. I have this one friend that compares me and 3 of my other friends to the characters of the movie, with me being Trentin. I can't disagree at all out of the four she picked i would be Trent but she would be Jordan. So we all seat back a just the persons line who we relate to it fun. Watch this movie with your friends and see if you can relate to the characters.
6 Great to watch -- with the volume on mute!!
I enjoyed this flick the second time, ONLY because I watched it without ANY sound. That's right, on complete MUTE. This movie just LOOKS good. Whoever wrote this script should be "slapped", I mean with a back-hand, too.

And Nia?? I like her, she is pretty but girlfriend CANNOT act at all. I don't know if it's her or the script. The audience saw EVERY camera angle of her immaculate haircut, behind her ears, etc. Nia would have been far better in a 30-second hairstyle tv commercial.

And that fight scene between Taye and Morris was completely overdone.

This will be the last African American film I will see in awhile.

7 escaping the bambozzled
As a guy some people criticize me for watching "love" stories but it seems like it's the only outlet from general African American movies. Most movies are flooded with negative propaganda thru street wars or ignorant stereotypical comedy. Both African Americans and Caucasians eat this up and thus the view of African American culture is distorted into simple tragedy. Sure, we have tragedy and the street war story is real in many ways, however we are just as multi-faceted as any other racial group and characters like those in Best Man, Love Jones, etc are just as real.

I'm glad to see that we are escaping stereotypical roles and scenes in film. But this has occured before, in versions like the Cosby Show. Unfortunately marketers decided it was not appealing to enough audiences and thought that more stereotypical programs would be accepted by eurocentric americans and the poverty-stricken african american who is too uneducated to understand that the jokes on him. Hopefully we wont depend on just love stories marketed to women and be able to make other stories (such as the uplifting "Antwone Fisher" by Denzel Washington) that can be as multi-faceted as eurocentric films. Slowly but surely we will arrive, as long as we keep our eyes on the prize.

8 Too Much Best Man
The movie was a good one. The best man went too far in trying to help his friend. Some things people just need to work out for themselves. I DEFINITELY wouldn't want my maid of honor helping me with my pre-marital affairs in the way that the best man helped outhis friend. NO WAY!
9 good movie
this is one of my favorites. just a good movie to watch but isnt anything with morris chestnut in it?:) i recommend this movie to everyone who likes a good story line. i liked all the characters and the way the movie played out. i thought it was really good
10 Brilliant!
This fantastic effort follows the story of 4 friends and their significant others. The story revolves around the marriage of Lance Sullivan (Morris Chestnut), a talented and arrogant American football player, to shy Mia Morgan (Monica Calhoun). Cue Taye Diggs who plays Harper Stewart, the perfectionist author who is Lance's best man. All the college friends such as work-mad Jordan Armstrong (Nia Long), the sly and lascivious Q (Terrence Howard) and the ever-worrying Julian Murch (Harold Perrineau Jr) are invited to the wedding preparations but fireworks erupt when Harper Stewart's semi-autobiograhical book goes missing and lands in the hands of his friends, especially Lance. One can only guess what happens from this point!

This film is brilliant in entertaining the viewer with the varied and colourful characters, making you laugh yet causing anticipation to fill you as the end of the story nears.

For me, the acting was great from Morris Chestnut to Taye Diggs but special mention should go to Terrence Howard for his sly yet brutally honest portrayal of the womaniser but loyal friend, Quintin.

But the DVD! Good special features but the subtitles - why do distributors persist to omit French and Spanish? DVD distributors must realise that there are other languages that they must include in order for everyone to enjoy films.

11 ok
the movie had a great cast, but you got to admit it is predictable. Good movie though.
12 Great Black Film
I loved this movie, I thought the storyline was great because it touched bases with alot of relationships, someone always wants your man/woman. I also liked the love that is displayed between a man and a woman as well as between "TRUE" friends. Besides that, it had an all-star cast. GREAT MOVIE
13 Alright up until the end
I thought this movie was alright, I would have liked it better if it ended differently. I really believe Taye's character should have ended up with Nia's character because we saw them develop throughout the movie and since their relationship in the past didn't work, I really wanted to see them give another go at it. The reason why I didn't want Taye with Sanaa's character was because we only saw her in the beginning of the movie and in the end, so we didn't really get to see what her character was like to judge rather she would have been better for Taye's character or not. Instead of having the guy with the dreads hook up with the stripper maybe they should have hooked him up with Sanaa's character, I think that would have worked out better so she wouldn't have ended up alone like Nia's character did after all she had been through. Overall, this movie had a great cast and a possible good storyline, I just wish it would have ended differently.
14 MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE
I absolutely LOVE this movie. It is, without a doubt, my all time favorite. I wish they would make a sequel or a prequel. The actors/actresses were brilliant. They were really good with the comedy timing - especially Quinton (sp). It was so funny. Truly one of those 'you laughed, you cried'.

I guess I most enjoyed this movie because it is so real for me. People commented that these characters are all "so rare" in the black community, when in fact, these characters are exactly like the people I have known all my life and continue to grow up with. This movie is ~us~ on TV. Flawed, but for the most part positive. Just regular characters. We waited so long! This is regular black America for me and mine and this funny portrait of them was excellent!!

It plays well on the screen because it is so real. Good friends, good times, good memories, old flames, old regrets, college years, new steps, new beginnings, indecision, career moves, relationships. Life at its best. You will not regret buying this DVD!

Get this on DVD soon! If you haven't seen it yet, you are missing out!

15 A GOOD MOVIE
A good little movie. Showing Brown folk upper class and doing their thing. Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Melissa DeSousa look good as they usually do. Good movie to relax to and chuckle at. Directed by Spike's c'son Malcolm. Glossy to no end, "TBM" differs from the gritty "urban dramas" that most studios put Black people in. No masterpiece but a nice little romantic comedy, good debut for Malcolm. ... At the end of the day, BTM wins.
16 The Best Man: a Second Look.
What did I like about this movie? Well, it has a pretty good soundtrack. We're treated to stellar tunes from Maxwell, Kenny Lattimore, Faith Evans, and a "duet" featuring Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley. In addition, the fashions are impeccable. Nia Long wears expertly-tailored jackets made of the finest wool tweed, and Taye Diggs sports the most dapper of threads which perfectly compliment the buppie lifestyle he leads.

But what about the script? The performances? And the film's overall premise? Near-disaster on all counts. This is possibly the best-looking mediocre movie I've watched in years. For all that glitters, "The Best Man" is less a movie than a flashy advertisment of buppieism. It's the widescreen equivilent of an E.Lynn Harris novel, and it's just as superficial. Nothing wrong with showing bruthas and sistas in a positive, professional light. It worked for "Love Jones." It does not work for "The Best Man." Unlike "Love Jones," this film is too slick for its own good, resorting to chick-flick cliches, one-dimensional characters, and unrealistic settings. I mean, how many struggling authors (Black ones at that) are able to afford page-out-of-GQ threads and live in these huge, fabulous apartments like Harper Stewart (Diggs)? Also, memo to Nia Long: get some range in your "performances." She has a face pretty enough to light up a screen, but good looks do not a compelling performance make. In virtually every role she's in, she pouts, rolls her eyes, and raises an accusatory finger at some hapless dude. Not attractive. And there's the scene in which the fellas let their hair down and engage in guy talk during a card game. What should have come across as a frank and honest discussion on male/female relations is really a slap of unchecked chauvinism. The irritating thing about "The Best Man" is that it positions itself as a film far smarter than it really is. The hip soundtrack, smattering of sharp one-liners, and stylish references are there to trick you into thinking that this movie has something important to say. It doesn't. For a genuine, gritty, and uncontrived Black-on-Black love story, check out "Love Jones" and leave this "Best Man" at the altar.

17 The Best of the Best
I love this movie. It is a classic that you can watch over and over again.
This movie takes place in the time spand of one very intense weekend. The Best Man is about a group of six old college friends that come together for a wedding. Harper (Taye Diggs) has written a unpublished book that is partly fiction but incorporates true events that happen between the group of friends. One of Harper's friends, Jordan,is a big time TV producer and has access to a copy of Harper's book. Because
Jordan lets some of the friends see Harper's book some secrets are revealed that have a major impact on the entire weekend.
There are some really great characters in this movie as well as some really cute guys. This is a great movie that portrays the black community in a positive manner. The best man deals with friendships, emotions, commitments and a lot more.
I recommend the Best Man to anyone who wants to enjoy a GREAT movie.
18 Good curl up on the couch movie
This is one of those movies that you'll love to watch again and again. It is a interesting look at a group of friends who come together for a special event. And how strong their friendship and faith has to be to overcome some tough times during that weekend.I love this movie, and who wouldn't with such a great cast great story line. Warning...you'll be drawn into their lives and be addicted to the drama that unfolds, and will want to watch it over and over. A ,muliti emotion rollercoaster well worth the ride!
19 Fun, energetic, but a bit too long
The Best Man is a funny, racy romantic comedy starring some of the best black actors working today. What it lacks in originality, it makes up for in energy. It's a lot of fun.

For Harper [Taye Diggs], it's the best of times and the worst of times. His yet unpublished first novel has been picked up by Oprah Winfrey's Book Club, almost insuring that it will be a best seller. He has a great girlfriend whose only fault seems to be that she's pushing the skittish Harper towards the marriage question. His best friend, Lance [Morris Chestnut], is about to get married, and Harper's the best man. What Harper doesn't know is that an advanced copy of his book has been obtained by an old flame, who will be at the wedding. It's making the rounds of his friends. The problem is that the novel's characters are based on his old friends, all of whom are part of the nuptial event. This is going to be one wedding party Harper will never forget.

It isn't long after Harper arrives in New York for the big event that he discovers Jordan [Nia Long], the old girlfriend, is the one who obtained the book. And why not? She's now an executive at a big TV station and has the inside track on obtaining information. Harper is panic-stricken. He's written a work of fiction, but a lot of it is based on real life situations which reveal some closely held secrets about his and his friend's love lives. Lance now has the book, but Harper is foiled in every attempt to retrieve it. To make matters worse, the attractive Jordan is trying to rekindle their relationship.

Nothing in the plot is new. In fact, it's pretty much a classic romantic comedy plot Hollywood have been remaking successfully for seventy years. Yet when a movie like this is well done, it's nice to settle down and relax with it. It's sort of like seeing an old friend. The cast sparkles. Taye Diggs, who got his training in theater, is one of best actors working today. Nia Long has yet to prove she's quite as talented, but she is certainly one of our most beautiful actresses. There is not a bad performance in the movie.

There are a couple of drawbacks. First time director Malcolm D. Lee [Spike's cousin] allows The Best Man to overstay its welcome by about twenty minutes. Two or three scene transitions are rough, indicating that a couple of key moments were never filmed. These faults are enough to prevent the movie's getting a really high rating, but they are not sufficient to smother your enjoyment of this delicious comedy. People who don't get paid to look for these elements might not even notice them.

20 Really Good Movie With A Nice Lesson
I liked The Best Man. It was a really nice movie, not too deep, not too light, with vivid characters that were very 3 dimensional.

There are 6 main characters, all friends since college, who get together for a wedding. All of the characters are doing nicely in their chosen professions, which was a VERY WELCOME change from the standard fare offered with African American's at the helm. I was finally able to identify with the people on screen (not all of us live in ghetto's and drink alcohol!). There are misunderstandings, expectations of infedility, and loads of fun in this movie. And the dialogue was refreshing, exciting and insightful.

If you've ever seen and loved The Big Chill, then The Best Man will be a great addition to your collection. Both films are similar in their overall premise, great scripts and fabulous directing.

As for the acting, everyone did a great job. But, I would be remise in not telling you the purchase price for this video is worth it JUST for the performance of Terrence Howard, who portrays Quincy. Quincy is one of the most fabulously drawn characters I've ever experienced. As some older folks say "He played the heck out of that role!"

Buy it! You won't regret it.
Dr. Braxy :o)

21 A Wonderful Entertaining Comedy about Class and True Romance
When a Novelist (Taye Diggs) joins his former College Friends (Terrence Howard, Nia Long & Harold Perrineau Jr.) to see his Close Friends (Morris Chestnut & Monica Calhoun) first's Wedding but everything goes wrong, when his latest novel is actually based on his friends lives and the Situation goes Worse between their Friendship.

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother) is the Cousin of Filmmaker:Spike Lee. This is a Multiple and Intrigue Comedy with Romance and Drama. The Performances from the Cast is the True-Light of the film. The Film's Plot Twist makes this very Watchable. This was a Modest Box Office Success in Theaters. This is a Entertaining film. Grade:B+.

22 This movie is better than good....
I love the movie from the beginning to the end. All the actors and actresses were my favorite. My favorite part of this movie was the fight that broke out at the bachelor party. This movie is a must see!! Morris Chestnut will learn a valuable lesson in this movie one that he will always remember, "One Goes Around ALWAYS Comes Back Around." I recommend if you have not seen t The Best Man that you need to go buy it not rent it TODAY!!!
23 One of my favorite movies
I love this movie so much. It's so good. It's a must see.
24 Beatific
This movie was fun to watch. It was a welcome break from some of the more popular but negative portrayals of African American males. This is not to say that the brothas in the film lack a doggish side. It is just that they are handsome, wholesome, and eloquent enough to still remain admirable and desirable even with a little of the doggself displayed.Beautiful brothers and sistahs, Beautiful acting, beautiful film. We need more like this.
25 Genuine Friendship Personified
Excellent directorial debut for Malcolm Lee. This was a well written story. It's the type of African American movie that we should see more often.

The interaction among the male characters was genuine. I liked the individuality of the characters. Harper is the professional writer who's at the top of his game. Lance is a star athlete who doesn't always want to accept the consequences of his actions; he turns to GOD to get him out of his binds. Quentin is the consumate player with no set life goals, although he manages to experiment with several career choices; he's blunt and not always likeable. Murch is the soft spoken member of the group who has a life awkening during the movie. It seems as if the script was written with these actors in mind.

Jordan, is the most developed female character in the movie. She's a sassy, independent, career woman. Nia Long gives this character a lot of pizzaz. You gotta love her. The character of Mia, is not well developed nor is her portrayal by Monica Calhoun a stand out performance. Sanaa Lathan is a star in the making.

This movie is full of laughs and one I can watch again.

26 ALL TIME BEST (10 STARS)
I loved this movie! When I went to the movies with my boyfriend we were going through that I love you, but I don't know if I'm ready to get married situation . He reminded me of Hopper (Taye Diggs). This movie came at the perfect time in our relationship. I loved this movie so much that I went out and brought it on VHS. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD. The movie is about Hopper Collins writing a book about his college years and experience. He writes some well hinded messages that should have been omitted about his best friends and some females involved in his life. This part I didn't get. He tried to cover it up by summing up his details in a "rated PG- type setting" when all his friends knew that it really stood for a "rated R preview" of what actually went down. So, Hopper flies to NY to be Lance Sullivans (Morris Chestnut) best man in his wedding. But before he actually makes through the weekend festivities, his book is discovered before the release date by his nosey college "girl friend" Jordan (Nia Long). Each character has read or is reading the book throughout the weekend, including Lance. The book centers around all the characters and all of their past scandals. This stirs up a lot of emotions both physically and mentally for all characters. The underlying message is detected throughout their reading the book, and the wedding comes to a halt. Hopper must face his past in order to move to the present, and Lance has to owe up to what he has done in his past as well. This is a true love story. It lets you know that love does endure all things. Love is victorious! This is my favorite film. If you want to look at a movie from all angles of a male's point-of-view this is the movie for you.
27 Many Many Kudos, but...
I loved this movie, however, am I the only one who noticed that they partied at the reception to "Candy" -- THE STRIPPER'S SIGNATURE SONG FROM THE BACHELOR PARTY AND SHE WAS THERE?!!!! *hysterical laughs*

I wonder if the producers noticed that little faux pau... I can't imagine that that was intentional, but it gave me a good chuckle! :)

28 The Best Man
"The Best Man"= Excellent! It is refreshing to see Black artists in a different limelight. It shows the audience that blacks can become media executives, authors, attorneys and have other successful jobs; not every black person is a "dope-dealer", in a gang, etc. The characters in "The Best Man" were amazing, great story.I loved all of the characters, except for Shelby(Female dog).

30 Superb writing, acting, and directing - a gem of a movie
A real feel-good movie, with great character development, and superb writing, acting, and directing. The film was about young African Americans, but it's been a long time since this 60-year-old white woman has enjoyed a movie so much.
31 Great Movie
The Best Man was a great movie. My main problem with it is that it bordered a little too much on the "Women love to see a humbled man" storyline. Still a definite rental and really worth adding to your collection. The best thing about the movie to me is that there is no one star of the movie. All the characters work together to get the story over. You love them all.
32 A movie worth watching
I went to see this movie at a theater and love it. Rarely can one find a movie, especially a black movie that shows frienship among men. In addition to friendship, there is betrayal, finding real true love, and forgiveness.
33 I loved it!
Casting the superfine Morris Chestnut in a leading role guaranteed that many women would see this film, but Terrence Howard nearly steals the movie with his hilarious observations. On the whole, I felt that this was a strong movie about old friends growing up. And while it is true that the female characters are a trifle underdeveloped, this movie was primarily about the 4 male friends. We seem them reminisce, bond, fight and ultimately make peace with each other. The women are only presented as accessories. But what is wrong with the men getting a flick of their own? They sure complained enough after "Waiting to Exhale" was made.

The Best Man is about old friends, love and secrets, and it is a romantic comedy -- not a drama. There are plenty of chauvanistic bible thumpers whose actions are in direct conflict with the bible they claim to revere. I thought Morris was hilarous especially when he proclaimed Jordan to be "too damned sassy and independent." The men are all prototypes. Lance is the jock, Harper is the writer, Murch is the boho and Quinten is the player. In real life people can't be neatly categorized like that.

My only grievance is with the film's ending. I don't think that that Harper should have proposed at the wedding, and I definitely don't think that his girlfriend should have accepted. They just got caught up in the moment. Still, I thought that this movie was fabulous and I will watch it again and again.

34 The Best Yet
Frist of all I'am a romantic at heart, I loved this movie, seen it twice, and could'nt wait for it to come on dvd or vhs which ever came frist. All I can say is that I made my husband go and he detest movies, but he enjoyed this one. Taye Diggs and Nia Long were great, she's one of my favorite actresses. It was spicy, funny, and very romantic! Every now and then I pull it out and watch it, I'll never get tired of looking at it. If I could, on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be rated 10
35 children
Just because this movie may have some profanity and nudity doesnt mean that they cant see it. It means that parent should be aware and make sure that we dont do or say anything that we see in movies.
36 Nice and Simple
This film portray's and individual's likelihood dealing with extremely fine actor's. I could relate to the movie myself, which I felt was tremendous, because that usually never happen's in a black film when you talk about romance~friendship....
37 Great! Great! Great!
I absolutely loved this movie! I saw it 3 times in theaters and since I've had the DVD - I've seen it an additional 4 times! The actors and actresses were wonderful! The storyline was wonderful! The plot was wonderful! Funny and romantic! Maybe there will be more like it soon!
38 flawed but rewarding film
`The Best Man' is a flawed but generally rewarding romantic drama, featuring a first-rate cast of likeable, talented actors. The film tells the tale of a handsome up-and-coming writer whose first novel has just been published on the eve of his best friend's wedding. The problem is that much of the material in the book has been drawn from autobiographical sources - and now, as old friends gather for the ceremony, the author and best man, Harper Stewart, has to face the fallout from some of the less than flattering portrayals contained therein. In addition, the novel contains the revelations of a few hitherto well-guarded secrets, some of which bear directly on the principals involved in the wedding itself.

Ironically, the primary strength of the film also emerges as its overarching weakness. The movie provides so richly textured a depiction of the interrelationships between and among the wide assortment of characters that it alternately straddles the line between fascination and tedium. On the positive side, writer/director Malcolm D. Lee is not afraid to give the characters their due, to allow them to reveal their many-layered personalities in scenes that play out in real-time tempo and rhythm. One appreciates the fact that we are not being rushed along from one highly dramatic moment to another without time to really get to know the characters as people. The counter effect of this, however, is that the film often seems too talky, self-indulgent and dramatically flat, a fact not helped by the excessive 122-minute running time. In addition, the whole novel-publishing aspect of the story seems both unnecessary and contrived, not to mention lacking in credibility since it becomes a bit difficult to believe that, if he were so terrified about his friends discovering his true perceptions of them, Harper would have written the novel in the first place. Moreover, when we hear voice-over recitations of a few sections of the novel itself, we are struck dumb that so badly written and trite a work could be so critically lauded and commercially successful.

However, the film's virtues do, ultimately, outweigh its imperfections. The actors and actresses turn in uniformly fine performances and the film deals intelligently and sensitively with the age-old issues of the fear of commitment and the two-faced attitude many men have when it comes to female infidelity. Lee, within the context of his characters, confronts these issues with subtlety rather than heavyhandedness and the last half hour or so of the film turns into a very moving celebration of the qualities of acceptance, commitment and sacrifice necessary to make a relationship truly work. `The Best Man' may require a little patience at times to get through, but the reward for those willing to give it a try makes it worth the effort.

39 Great movie
This was a very entertaining movie! If you have been to college you will surely be able to relate to this film. Definitely one you could watch over and over for years.
40 Thats what friends are for !
I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Obviously it helps that the absolutely gorgeous Morris Chestnut played a leading part (yes please ! ). It does not keep you gripped to your seat like a murder mystery. What the film highlighted was that friendships have highs as well as lows (like a marriage really). I particularly like the bonds that the men had in spite of the fact that each of them had completely different personalities. Harper urging Lance to pray in the church was moving. What Harper touched on was how deep their friendship went and the fact that he (Harper) had not forgotten this in spite of the situation he found himself in. It wasn't a deep and meaningful film but that's what made it so enjoyable. It just shows that African American films can be entertaining without being deep and and touching on major issues of the day. It is so completely refreshing to see something uplifting and romantic rather than the usual gangsta/action packed films. When Lance cried whilst saying his vows, I cried too. The bride looked beautiful, the groom............what can I Say?........The bridal party seated at the main table....Harper's speech.... MAGICAL ! The get together at the end was by the far the best, I wanted to jump out of my seat and join in the boogie ! If you've given up on relationships, marriage or a friendship then please watch this film. Let's see more more more black films of this nature - family life, strong relationships, marriage. Let's start being more positive and loving towards each other rather than being continually caught up in these battle of the sexes. Well done ! Look forward to seeing a follow up shortly. Let's see Jordan fall in love and get married.
41 stop hatin'
come on--it is a MOVIE made for entertainment purposes; not meant to teach anyone how to be a player--that's a different film. the best man was refreshingly real. my brothers and sistas in the movie made being black fasionable. so sit back, relax see this movie--get some popcorn, have a coke and a smile! it's well worth it.
42 The Best Man is The Best I've Seen In Months!
Finally, a movie that shows African American's in a different light! This movie was excellent. The acting was superb! I was so happy to see Young Black People portrayed in this movie as educated, intelligent, and doing something with their lives. The story line was great and everyone can indentify with at least one of the personalities in this movie. The movie gave you so many options on where the story would end. Half way through the movie I was sure I knew what was going to happen and so was everyone else in the movie theater. Or so we thought...we were all dead wrong! Let's not even talk about the soundtrack..every song in this movie helps you see how the characters really feel. This movie is definitely recommmended
43 A Modern Masterpeice !
What can I say, except that The Best Man is truly a breakthrough movie. Comedy, Romance, Drama...what more can you ask for in a movie. Amazing performances by an extraordinary cast. Miss Nia Long is without a doubt, the gem of the movie, and she is an amazing actress, especially in the African-American movie industry. No wonder that this movie won so many awards at this year's NAACP Awards. The best scenes are the wedding scene, and the last scene where they all do the electric slide to the song "Candy" by Cameo. I was dancing in my chair at the movie theater. May I also add, The Best Man comes with a great soundtrack! Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill, Genuwine, Tyrese, Faith Evans, Eric Benet.....GALORE! A job well done.
44 Not the Best Movie
I never got to see "The Best Man" in the movie theatres. After a discussion with some colleagues regarding some of the themes prevalent in the movie, I decided that I would see it once it got to video. Having finally seen it on video, I must say that this movie is contrived, too slow to start and full of characters that are one-dimensional. Is it possible that a writer could write a book that would be that destructive of the writer's friendships? Perhaps. However, this book being the vehicle that provides the movie's "conflict" rings false. Additionally, the characters (not the ones in the book) aren't fleshed out. We the audience are supposed to buy Lance's(the football player)contradictory language regarding Jesus and his ridiculous language regarding women without explanation. Why is he like this? The antagonist winds up with the shrew the same day as the shrew is dumped? Excuse me? I'm supposed to accept that? The male characters are cardboard and the women seem to serve little purpose other than window dressing for the weak, boastful, and utterly forgettable men. In some ways, the movie seems more like a Terry McMillan or E. Lynn Harris novel than a movie from a screenplay. It's full of quick fixes and long stretches of exposition that says little. Save your money and buy a much better movie like love jones or Soul Food.
45 Wonderful and Funny
I would first like to correct one of your reviewers. 'Soul Food' may have began with an Earth, Wind, and Fire song, but 'The Best Man' ended with a Cameo song. They recorded 'Candy,' not EWF. I thought the movie was great. Terrance Howard deserves much recognition for his role as 'Quinten.' The storyline was well developed as were the characters. It had its serious moments as well. I especially liked the speech that 'Harper' gave while toasting the bride and groom. The words were really deep. Seeing African Americans acknowledging their love for one another on screen is truly refreshing. But seeing us FORGIVE one another is good too!
46 Very Average
aside from Terrence Howard nobody else comes close too match his Grand Performance.the film was way Too Long&Cliched.aside from Nia Long alot of Soul Food Bites here. How For Instance Soul Food Started out with a Earth,Wind&Fire Song this One Ended With one.the writting isn't that strong. The Women Looked Great but their Story-lines were never developed enough.Taye Diggs has Some Talent but hasn't found that Role Yet.MR.Howard Should Have Gotten an Award.cuz without him this film would have been truly Forgettable.nothing new under the sun here.
47 Disagree With the Amazon Reviewer
I totally am at odds with Bret Fetzer in his assessment of the "chauvinistic male banter" and the "poorly developed" female characters. I don't know where he has been, but that is the way most guys talk when women are not around. It is not intended to be sexist but it's "a guy thing." My sisters tell me about "the secret dialogues" that they have when get together. I feel that the film captured that bit of everyday life perfectly.

As far as the female characters, each of them is successful, beautiful, and independent. They know what they want out of life and strive to attain it. They represent a variety of personalities from self-centered prima donna to the professional career woman. They are a reflection of the magnificent diversity of the American woman.

Now, the film itself is perfectly acted. Taye Diggs, so good in "How Stella Got Her Groove On," is outstanding as the author who sets the stage for the film's events to occur. Nia Long shines in her role as Jordan, a longtime friend who harbors a desire to fulfill a tryst began long ago in college. Morris Chestnut, who obviously spent a lot of time at the gym, brings depth and excitement to his role as Lance, the groom.

Terrence Howard and Melissa Calhoun are memorable as two characters so similar that they are destined to share an intimate moment.

Howard Perrineau and Sanaa Lathan round out this highly gifted cast.

This film deserved much more the box office success it received. Acting, writing and directing nominations by either the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Foreign Press Club should have been given.

"The Best Man" has a great story, realistic characters, good editing, masterful direction by Malcolm Lee, and a good score from Stanley Clarke along with the use of popular artists.

Buy it!

48 One of the best I've seen in recent months!
The moment I saw The Best Man, I knew I had to own the video. The actors in it are excellent and the plot hits close to home. I, too, had a problem with intimacy and commitment, so I can relate to Taye Diggs's character. I laughed out loud and cried (don't tell anyone, okay?) at the end. It is one of the most touching and human stories I have ever seen.

In a nutshell, The Best Man is phat!

49 A HUMAN STORY, NOT A BLACK ONE
I am a black human being. I watched this movie, and having friends of different races and backgrounds I realized that no matter what the color of the actors were in this movie.NO ONE, NOT BLACK,WHITE,HISPANIC, ASIAN, INDIAN... no one could see this film and not see themselves, their friends etc. Since when did emotions have a color? Since when did loyalty, love and dedication become a race issue? The last time I checked, those are HUMAN ISSUES.This movie delivered, and it should have won more praise and it should have been nominated for academy awards. Thats another story. America is not ready to appreciate a film of this depth and knowledge and above all; a film devoid of stereo typical "negro" behavior. Beyond all of that, the immense love and loyalty that transcended the negative issues of the film were ever present and very appreciated. Keep up the good work!
50 Excellent and Extremely Romantic
I think this movie was great! The characters all played great roles. It's about a author who writes a book about a secret past that has the ability to change his brotherhood with his friends. Taye Diggs was awesome and his supporting actor (Nia Long) was just as great. This was a beautiful story and deserves more than just 5 points.
51 all of the brothers were the "Best Men"
Wonderful, fresh, funny, and sexy. I was truly surprised by the peformance of Terrance Howard. When I first saw him, I thought that he was cute, but, I was not ready for the charisma and devilishness that dripped from his character. He is truly a gifted and sexy actor. The other men in this movie displayed qualities not often expressed by Black men in movies. I was tryuly impressed.
52 10 stars!
I wish I could give it ten stars! This movie was so great! Ihave never seen a movie that is emotional, dramatic, action packed, and tasteful at the same time. These men were awesome, and beyond sexy. Quinton's attitude and persona alone was sexy. Taye Diggs's compassion and sensuality was sexy, and Morris Chestnut's love for Mia was sexy. (I can't remeber all the real names of the actors so bare with me). I love this movie, I can watch it over and over again. The best movie I have seen in a long time! And those Men were truly The Best! (I didn't know that Morris Chestnut was as fine as he is)!...
53 A film you won't forget
I finally rented the film about two weeks ago after a friend begged me to get it. Well, I enjoyed it. I found some parts weak, but on a whole, i liked it. But my rationale is this, why write a book about an experience you would rather kept silent on with the soon to be bride and dedicate the book to the bride and groom? Too much...and too scandalous... His speech at the reception was great. And Terrance Howard's aimless but true character was good.
54 Decent, but not great.
I thought the acting in this movie was great, but the movie just didn't do it for me. It had some good moments, but overall it was slack and boaring. so I think it deserved a well earned 3 stars, but definatly dosen't deserve any more than that.
55 SPEECHLESS
The Best Man is the best movie I have seen. It has just enough reality to make you one of the characters. You feel their pain, you share there joy and you share their tears. All the actors in the movie were dynamic. They make you feel you have known each character for years. This movie is a must see. You can't miss it.
56 Breathtaking
"The Best Man" was one of the Best black films that has come to the movie theatre. The film was something we all could relate to. Best Man is definitley the movie of the Century.
57 Needs more stars than 5!
Excellent movie - will buy it and watch it over and over. This is by no doubt the best black film ever made! I laughed hard, cried hard, and completely enjoyed the superb performances by all of the actors and actresses. And of course I can't forget to mention the pulsating music. My advice: buy the movie and the soundtrack. Both are classics. I'm disappointed, but not surprised that this movie was snubbed by the Oscars. But oh well -- it's one of the best movies of all time in my opinion.
58 Now who exactly is the "Best" man?
This was one of the greatest movies of all times. I am very impressed with the selection of the cast. Couldn't have picked a better one myself. Taye, Morris, and the others did an outstanding job, one that I'll gladly applaud, but I must admit that Terrence Howard was the "Best" man in this movie. He had this mysterious perception thing going that got everyone he talked to thinking. His "are you sure about that" and "it's carma" attitude caused even the most positive person to doubt what was true. There was a certain deepness about his character that kept everyone one edge. Then at the end the man showed out on the dance floor. It was "ELECTRIFYING" what he did to the electric slide. The movie was off the hook, and my applaud goes out to the producers who saw that Terrence "Quentin Spivey" Howard had what it took to be the "BEST MAN".
59 This is a must have for your video/DVD collection!
What can I say? Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, some damn fine men! This was one of those movies that you just can't stop watching. It shows our African American actors and actresses at the bests. I loved it, and have to have it in my home movie collection.
60 WHAT A GREAT MOVIE...
THIS MOVIE IS GREAT FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN...IT DEFINATELY HITS HEAD AND HEART FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN,,,ITS A GOOD FLICK FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN,,ITS NOT JUST A CHICK FLICK...
61 Excellent
The story line is excellent, it could happen to anyone....and probably has..
62 THE BEST MEN!
This movie keeps you on edge. It's a wonderful story with a great cast. I can watch it over and over again. The men are gorgeous! A must see!
63 Keep the faith
What a beuatifully made movie - the director manages to capture the essence of clean-living and successful blacks. Wonderfully directed and made me yearn for more. I will no doubt watch the DVD over and over again.

Many of the earlier reviewers focused on the fact that this was an excellent African-American movie. I agree with the fact that there was a solid plot, no violence, positive characters, etc. However, this movie has a universal appeal and virtually all Americans could relate to the characters in this movie. All of the actors did an excellent job with their portrayals of the characters. This has to be one of the best movies that I have seen in the past 5 years.
65 IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING
The Best Man, was truely a movie that african americans have been waiting for and deserved to see! We always see our fellow brothas either dealing drugs, having bad attitudes or killing each other. But this movie, shows successful young african americans in everyday life, and what each one of them go through during this week of one of their college friends wedding. The movie has comedy, sensitivity, anger, love, and passion. THIS MOVIE HAS IT ALL! And for the ladies, if you don't mind watching an hour of sexy black men, then this is the movie to get. MORRIS CHESTNUT, TAYE DIGGS, OLE'BOY FROM SPARKS, just fine! I promise you this movie will keep you interested, and guessing, there is never a dull moment. I am 18 years old, and I see a lot of movies, but this one took the cake, I LOVE THIS MOVIE. So if you wanna go through every human emotion you could imagine, then THIS IS IT. IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING, and we finally get to see our sexy black men in a movie that shows, that underneath that worrior exterior, and that gladiator body, they have a heart of gold, and a soul that want's to be loved. And me being a young black woman, i loved the movie. THE BEST MAN, truely is THE BEST CHOICE. As Morris Chestnut says, "she's my soul, without her i'm nothing, she's my earth, my queen" I'm waiting for a brotha to say that to me(wouldn't hurt if it was Morris Chestnut) (laughing)
66 The Best Movie is The Best Man!
this film captured the essence of another dimension of african-american culture. malcolm lee brought the images of educated, successful young black people to the forefront and i am so grateful. the characters were very indicative of my college friends and the storyline was superbly written and executed by the most talented black actors in the business. terrance howard's character stole the show :) but everyone gave 150% and i'm glad the story was able to be told before a global audience. it is one of the best films ever made!
67 Excellent
The movie is great. The was no leading man or woman, every had an equal role (despite the top billing of Taye Diggs and Nia Long). This film was excellently written and portrayed, one of the few films that shows that African Americans can be successful. It makes you feel as if you were the actual characters. Bravo. However, there is no need to add DTS to the soundtrack because there is not that much surround information.
68 A great movies for people of all backgrounds.
First of all major props due to Malcolm Lee for directing what will no doubt be considered a classic. Mr. Lee did not succomb to the senseless violence and irresponsiblity that Hollywood consistently serves up when dealing with a cast of "African American" decent. Mr. Lee painted a picture of friendship and maturity that is as beautiful as it gets. I am normally one that doesnt like to see wedding movies , however this movies is less about a wedding and more about the bonds of friendship and responsiblity.Harper (Taye Diggs) is totally believable in his sincerity as is Lance ( Morris Chestnut ). A great date and family film. The story becomes somewhat predictable however there are a few hillarious plot twists that keep your attention. For eye candy there is the incredibly sexy Nia Long for the guys and a few shirtless scenes with Taye and Morris for the ladies. I am of latin decent and can honestly say that this movie is a must see for people of all backgrounds. I was so proud to see men and women of ethnic backgrounds portrayed in such a positive light. Thank you Mr. Lee for not stuffing the usual garbage down our throats. See it and you will not be dissapointed.
69 Movie of the year
I really enjoyed this movie. My entire family went to see it and we had a wonderful time. I believe that if this movie didn't contain an all black cast that it would have been nominated for an award. This movie had everything that is needed to make a movie be considered for an award. It made you laugh, it made you cry, and it made you try to figure out if that's what really happened. I'm still debating with friends and family if Taye Diggs ever made love to the bride while they were in college. My guess is no. The directing was excellent and the acting was the best that I have ever seen. I go to all the black movies. I'm definitely going to get this one, along with The Wood, for my collection. (Taye Diggs is in The Wood, also)
70 A Perfect Gift.
First of all I would like to say that I saw the movie 20 times in theaters. This movie really hit home.Being a 22 year old african american I can really relate to the movie. The cast was a perfect choice. Looking from the Director's point I can understand why he would release such an exquisite story.I totally believe this is the best black film ever made because there was no violence and the characters were mature enough to accept the responsibility of the mistakes they made in the past. What a beautiful wedding.I personally hope one day to meet a partner as sweet and adorable as Lance Sullivan(Morris Chestnut).I truly hope that more movies similar to this background will be released. What I mean is we need more black films that are upscale and sophisticated instead of ghetto and violence. This film is a must to add to your video tower.
71 THE BEST OF THE BEST
This movie is fast becoming a classic. It was well written, acted and the cast was beautiful. Though the cast was of African American actors, this is movie for all ethnic backrounds. It tells of a group of college friends that reunite for a wedding, but the wedding itself is not the story, its a semi-ficticious book written by one of the friends. Why is the book so paramount? Its actually a true account of events that had occurred between the friends when enrolled in college. The movie also gives an accurate depiction of quality of the up and coming African Americans in the entertainment industry. Everyone did a masterful job! I could not imagine anyone else playing in their roles. The directing was great and the ending was expected but moving. I cried!Terrance Howard should have been nominated for an award for best supportng actor. He made this film as realistic as your reunions with your families and friends. Don't miss this!

Quote of the Day:

If you wait long enough, it will go away... after having done its damage.

If it was bad, it will be back.

"You would do well not to imagine profundity," he said. "Anything that seems
of momentous occasion should be dwelt upon as though it were of slight note.
Conversely, trivialities must be attended to with the greatest of care.
Because death is momentous, give it no thought; because victory is important,
give it no thought; because the method of achievement and discovery is less
momentous than the effect, dwell always upon the method. You will strengthen
yourself in this way."
