1 Caring for the main characters?
"Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them."
This movie roxorz. That review is bogus.
ROXORZ I SAYS!!!
2 The best!
This film ranks right up there with Pinocchio and Snow White in terms of Disney's best! It certainly is not one of the better known Disney animated films, but it is very endearing, very sweet, has a great look to it, has nice songs and great character voices!!! A real gem!
3 Friends forever
The movie is not only entertaining-it teaches a lesson to kids that you can come from different sides of the block and still have something in common and build a friendship against all the odds. I give this one a two thumbs up!!!
4 Ignore Amazon's Editorials...
[...]. "The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow." What is that supposed to mean? Despite what some may say, I think nearly every Disney animated film from "Snow White" to the mid-90s are magical. (There are others past that, but those are what I consider their classics. Don't get me wrong, "Lilo and Stitch" is adorable, but I won't remember it 30 years from now like "Aladdin" or "Bambi". I think "Brother Bear" was a notable exception, perhaps.) "The Fox and the Hound" was one of my favorite Disney movies when I was probably in Kindergarten-2nd grade. It is such a simple story, but it's definitely one of the studio's most heartwarming. Like others have said, it's most certainly bittersweet. This is the story of a young Fox, whose mother is shot. A kindly old owl is concerned about the orphan and arranges for a kindly farmwoman to adopt him. Young Tod soon meets Copper, the hunter-neighbor's hound puppy. They form a dear friendship. However, Copper leaves to learn how to be a hunting dog and their friendship is never the same. I don't know who wrote the songs in this movie, but whoever did, I salute them. "When You're the Best of Friends" and "Goodbye my Seem Forever" (I'm not sure if those are the original titles, they're my best guesses.) are beautiful, heart-wrenching songs. I still remember them as a sixteen-year-old and I still adore them. This is one movie no child should miss out on, although I strongly suggest for VERY young children that a parent sit with them the first time they watch it as a couple scenes might frighten them a bit.
5 A Bitter-Sweet Story of Friendship
I have been familiar with this Disney classic all of my life, long before it attained the "classic" status. This was the first movie to ever truly touch my young heart.
Watching this movie as a small child, I already had a vague concept of the message this story was trying to get across. I knew nothing of the complexities of growing up, and the inevitabilities that come with it, but I could relate to the idea that different types of people just weren't supposed to associate with each other.. even if they wanted to. Even as a tyke, it was easy for me to pick up on the broad idea of the movie - that good hearts come in all sorts of packages.
As I've grown up and watched the video again over the years, I feel that it has grown with me. The story of Todd and Copper has worked its way even further into my heart, now that I can understand everything that is being said here. There's a lot to think about as the story touches on ecological issues and social roles and responsibilities, along with the hardship of growing up, and learning to say goodbye while cherishing a memory.
Society and the world may be against the friendship of a fox and a hound, but Copper and Todd are able to overcome their dictated roles when it counts the most, and stay true to their friendship.
The themes involved in The Fox and The Hound make my heart ache with sadness, and I never can make it through this film without shedding some bitter-sweet tears, but Disney balanced things out nicely by creating a very simple, charmingly animated, world to absorb it all in. Everything is presented in a slow and simple manner, where we're not distracted by too much commotion, and can focus properly on the characters. We know what drives them, we feel their joys and their sorrows.
The ending is a beautiful sentiment; I get a pleasantly warm feeling from the reminder that, while people may grow apart, friendship is a sacred thing, to be cherished for a lifetime.
6 A truly underrated Disney gem
An orphaned kit fox (voiced by Keith Coogan) is found by a motherly owl who ingeniously sets up a situation so that the little critter will be taken in by the Widow Tweed (Jeanette Nolan). The woman raises the "toddler", naming him Tod, lavishing him with love and affection. One day while out playing in the nearby fields, Tod meets a neighbor puppy called Copper (Corey Feldman) and they become fast friends. Neither fur-child knows that the other is supposed to be his natural enemy, but that all changes when the bloodhound's master, Slade (Jack Albertson), takes him away for the winter to teach him to hunt. As adults, Tod and Copper (now voiced by Mickey Rooney and Kurt Russell, respectively) meet once again, but things are not the same. Break out the tissues for this one. Based on the book by Daniel P. Mannix.

7 I Loved It
A friend of mine brought over this DVD recently, practically insisting that I look at it.
I remembered Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel reviewing "The Fox and the Hound" on the PBS show "Sneak Previews" during its theatrical release. As I recall, they were very impressed with the look of the film, which is reminiscent of early Disney classics such as "Snow White," at least in terms of the gorgeous and realistic backgrounds...but I didn't recall them being overly enthusiastic about the plot.
At my friend's insistence, I relented...and loved it! These days, it's rare for any movie to hold my attention and keep it held...but "The Fox and the Hound" managed that difficult task.
If you're an overly protective parent, as some of the reviewers on these pages obviously are, stay away from this film. It has its share of Disney cuteness, but real-life dangers abound in the fantasy world that has been created. Yes, as some horrified parents have pointed out, there are guns. Yes, a gun is pointed at another human by an over-zealous hunter with a determined mean streak and spirit of vengeance. Yes, a hunter is depicted doing what hunters typically do. And, yes, characters that you end up caring for as the movie unfolds find themselves in life-threatening situations...but that's what makes this movie work. However, in typical Disney fashion, all ends well, fences are mended, and enemies even become friends...what's wrong with that?
The plot is simple but engaging...a baby fox and hound, not realizing that they're supposed to be mortal enemies, befriend each other...but, as time goes by, adult roles take over, and the friendship sadly ends...or so it seems.
The final 15 minutes or so of this film are absolutely absorbing/riveting, as the overly zealous/obsessed hunter and his faithful hound enter a protected game preserve to find/kill the fox that had trespassed upon his property several times in the past, when it had lived nearby as a pet of an elderly woman. It's obvious by this time that the fox and the hound's former friendship will reaffirm itself somehow, but the twist that Disney took at this point in the story wasn't the twist that I was expecting--happily so, as the path that the movie ended up taking was far more gripping/intense than ever anticipated...suffice it to say that I found myself wiping a tear or two away by the time this scene ended.
If Walt Disney himself could see this movie, he might not be pleased with the animation as a whole--but I can't picture him disliking the tale that the talented folks associated with this film managed to weave. "The Fox and the Hound" is a genuine classic.
8 A Walt Disney Classic The Fox and the Hound
This is one of my favorate (old) Disney movies!I really love the story & I still cry @ the end of the movie & Im 13 yr.s old! This is Disney's 24th animated film. Its a very amazing story of friendship & to me it tells you th@ you can be friends with anyone. So I really love what you learn in the story & @ the end when they are remembering being kids & you can hear the memories I tear up!I reccomend this movie anyone.
9 Teaching Love & Tolerance
This movie is even more relevant today than when it was first issued. The lesson of loving ones enemies is so important to a young child. We can't undo bigotry in adults but we can hope to reach young impressionable hearts. Simply a wonderful and beautiful story with the charming voice of Pearl Bailey!
10 A Good Movie for people of all ages
I am sixteen years old and when I saw this movie, it really brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me of how me and my best friend was. I really enjoyed this movie. Everyone should watch it on Family Nights.
11 Friends to the end.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies. When Widow Tweed takes in a baby fox, whose mother had been shot by hunters, she names it Tod and raises it. About the same time she takes Tod in, her neighbor, Amos Slade brings home a hound dog puppy named Copper.
One day in the woods, Copper and Tod meet and instantly become the best of friends. When fall comes and Amos takes an unwilling Copper along for his winterlong hunting trip, Tod tries to convince his friends, Big Mama, Dinky and Boomer that even though Copper will come back a trained hunting dog, that they will still stay the best of friends. Big Mama tells Tod that a fox and a hound are natural enemies and that, surprise, you ARE a fox.
When the two are finally reunited in the spring, Copper tells Tod that they can't be friends anymore. After a tragic accident involving Amos's other dog Chief, Copper swears that Tod will pay. Widow Tweed, realizing that she can't keep Tod locked up forever, takes Tod to the game preserve and lets him go. Amos resolves to kill the fox, and with Copper's help, goes to track him down. But when Copper has a run in with a bear, Tod comes to his rescue and, ultimately, Copper gets Tod spared from death.
A touching story about friendship that never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
12 Finally a DVD Version of this Awsome movie
I love this movie a lot it has great music like "Best Of Friends"
"Goodbye may seem Forever" and "Thats what Friends Are For" are all great songs on this DVD.
13 wonderful movie
I just LOOOOOOOVE this movie oh so much!!! It is sad though :(
It shows how differences can tear apart two very great friends.
14 A Wholesome Disney Film, that is very Heartwarming.
One of the saddest Disney films ever made, this is unlike any animated film in the Disney cannon. It has parallels with dealing with issues like racism and selfless friendship. The movie may not be the most iconic and heard of, but it is a definate must for anybody who loves Disney films. It brings back famous Disney talents. The movie is beautifully drawn and the music is very good too. A must see for a lover of the genre.
15 Has been my favorite Disney film since I was 5
This is one of the REAL Disney movies, people; to those who are reviewing it in bad taste, yes, it is not the happy-go-lucky fuzzy friendship average Disney film. It pushes real values and a sense of the real world. I have been watching this film since I was 5 and it never warped any of my values about my caution for guns or perspective on certain situations, etc. This was a good Disney movie in the sense that it didn't end the way everyone expects Disney movies to end. It wasn't predictable, but it was a touching film. It's a Disney classic and my favorite, and for those of you who think it's unsuitable for your children, look into it first before spending your 30 dollars.
16 What could possibly be better?!
The fox and the hound is an amazing movie with all of the loving characters like Tod the fox, Copper the hound dog, Cheif the older hound dog, Big mama the owl, and widow tweed. This story has great life-long lessons on friendship that you will never forget. Great for people young and old. Your kids will absoloutly love it. BUY IT NOW! IT WILL NOT BE LONG BEFORE TIME RUNS COMPLETLY OUT!!!!!
17 Not for young children
First of all I love Disney movies, as and adult, and can understand the hidden moral stories in them. This movie is about friendship for the adults who watch this. However, I watched this with my two young sons. After watching this movie, my sons turned every toy they touched into a shotgun. In this movie the human characters point guns at other humans, mistreat the animals, and use degrading language. My husband is a hunter and we have always taught our children that a gun is not a toy and that you NEVER point it at a person. This movie just destroyed all that teaching. I also am disappointed with some of the language used in this movie. There is no swearing in the movie, but there is a lot of language you don't want your young children using.
As a mother of two young boys, I will not be showing anymore Disney movies for a long time.
18 One of the Best...
The Fox and the Hound is by far one of the best Disney films not produced under Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney. While Copper and Todd have little personality, the plot line and minor character roles make up for it.
So, if you want a quality Disney video on friendship don't get cheezy Eisner vidoes like BROTHER BEAR, instead get THE FOX AND THE HOUND.
19 The Fox and the Hound
Wonderful film! Not only entertaining,(and adorable) but educational. Contains valuable lessons about friendship and loyalty. I loved it when I was a kid and still do!
20 The best ever disney movie!
Where do I start?! My ALL TIME favourite disney film. I love it so so much. An adorable little fox called Tod gets left by his Mum who is killed by hunters, he gets found and taken to an old woman called Widow Tweed. At the same time, Amos, a nasty evil hunter buys a hound puppy called Copper. The two are very adventurous so end up walking off, they bump into eachother and become "The best of friends". They really are the cutest cartoon baby animals I have ever seen before. Copper gets taken away for a long time on a hunting expedition, when he gets back they are older and more mature, Copper has realised it is impossible for them to be friends. Amos' other dog Chief is determined to kill Tod after he comes on their land, and comes close. Widow Tweed has to leave Tod as it is becoming to dangerous for him, he is very upset, but then finds his soul mate, Vixey. Definately one to watch! I'd recomend it to anyone! Some very sad scenes which make me cry every time, but who wouldnt at such a wonderful film. The perfect mixture of humour and sadness = the perfect disney film!
21 Best Disney Movie Ever
The Fox and The Hound is one of Disney's most effortlessly enjoyable films. Rather than try to assemble, as Disney has more recently, a blockbuster slate of artists, actors, songwriters and lyricists, in this film the studio chose sweet simplicity to tell what is ultimately a touching, bittersweet coming-of-age story. While Fox's animation is rudimentary by today's standards, the movie doesn't suffer for it; the film's lack of polish almost lends it legitimacy. This is obviously a movie meant for children, and the lack of revue-style dance numbers and grammy-winning top 40 songs, while generally clever and catchy in later movies like The Lion King, give to the film a childlike innocence that makes it particularly endearing. Call it a personal bias for having grown up loving this movie and watching it with my family countless times, but I'd say unequivocally that this is one Disney movie worth treasuring.
22 Cute, good, and SAD at the same time. All ages movie
This movie is very sad. The two were best friends, until copper, the hound left home to go on a hunting trip. By the time he came back, Tod, the fox, and copper were grown. Tod went to see copper the night he came back. Chief, the other hunting dog that would hunt any fox, woke and chaced Tod onto a railroad track. Tod ducked and fit through, but Chief didn't make it, and he fell off the side of the high up track. Copper was very fond of Chief. He was VERY mad at Tod and wanted to KILL him.
I dont want to say anything else, it will ruin the movie.
23 My names Copper, I'm a Hounddog!
Ranked lower by most of the family, TFATH comes in at #11 of the 50 movies were are ranking because it is my 25 year sons favorite Disney movie. It also gets 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because, even though most placed it in the bottom of their second 10, everyone liked it and it was watched often by all 5 children. This is the story of two natural enemies' that become friends as pups, but are forced into a potentially fatal confrontation when they grow up.
The end of the movie is a vicious battle and was somewhat scary for the kids when they were little. Be sure to be nearby for cuddling for the first viewing.
We had a lot of fun by gathering the family together to rank the 50 Disney movies we have that include some cartoon work. All the kids, ages 6 to 27, participated along with mother and dad. Peter Pan is no Codfish, we rank it #2. Lion King was selected number 1 of the 41 as the family favorite, but narrowly. Peter Pan was 2. Pete's Dragon 3, Beauty & the beast 4, Sleeping Beauty 5, Snow White 6, Robin Hood 7 and 101 Dalmatians 8.
The DVD we have has poor coloring with a Washed-Out appearance. This DVD also didn't come in Wide Screen, another disappointment. If you already have the VHS don't bother upgrading to DVD unless they reissue and enhance.
24 Utterly charming and underrated
The Fox and the Hound was probably somewhat of a crossroads for Disney studios. The last of the old animators left with this underrated gem. It doesn't need to bombast young viewers with unnecessary action or dumbed down pseudo-epic storylines to attract attention. It's simply the story of a friendship that manages to transcend nature's dictations and any trials thrown at it.
This is a tale told with such heartfelt sincerity that it moves and touches viewers with its story alone; no need for semi-Broadway moments every ten minutes or cheap, carefully masked lewd humor sprinkled in for potential bored adults. The characters are endearing and artlessly likeable, and the lessons learned are timeless.
There are engagingly subtle touches that augment the main story, such as the ongoing battle between two determined birds (one with a curiously Brooklyn accent) and one very lucky caterpillar. The conclusion to this humorous yet strangely realistic chase is a startlingly touching revelation in beauty. This is Disney at its best: a simple and touching movie that doesn't need anything else to make itself an enjoyable experience for everyone. Even the greats of the 90s seem a little cheap after this.
I first watched this as a little kid, and have been in love with it ever since. Right now, in that nebulous span of years between being able to drive and being able to drink, I'm probably entitled to bouts of rebelliousness and scorn for movies like this. But this is one Disney creation I'm proud to say that I love, something you plan to pass on to your children and grandchildren: a classic.
25 Emotional, touching but underrated.
Of all of Disney's animated classics, The Fox and the Hound is my second-to-favorite Disney movie, since the first is "The Rescuers" and third "The Black Cauldron". This has to be the best cartoon drama Disney has ever made. The story is slow-moving, and a bit scary, (but for it to be a good movie there had to be some scary touches, even if they are frightening) it tells the story of a fox and a hound becoming great friends, but growing up will lead them in different paths, knowing that she can't keep the fox in her house any longer, Widow Tweed will leave Tod alone in the forest. This is where the true drama comes during the sequence of "Goodbye May Seem Forever".
Can you belive it? Some people say Widow Tweed is the villain of the story, when all she did was suffer to save her "pet's" life.
Heart warming, touching and filled with excitement, The Fox and the Hound is a charming classic that must not be missing from your collection.
26 the fox and the hound
Wow! That's one of the many words you can use to describe this movie. This story will touch your heart and keep you in your seat from beginning to end. Never will there be another movie like it.
27 One Of The Most Overlooked Movies In History!
This is an instant Disney classic fron the moment it hit the shelf. I am 17 years ond, and it still brings a tear to my eye to see this movie. For all you people that down this movie because it is bad for younger children to watch, you need to look more deeply into the movie to see what it really says, bacouse it has some very valuable conteny. I would highly recomend this movie to any age group, expecially mid-age kids. Would have given the movie a much higher rating, but...it wouldn't let me :)
28 Great movie but I can't rait Fullscreen to high
First let me say this a great movie about friendship. This movies values will appeal to anyone who lost a childhood friend. I would rate thsi five stars if it wasn't for the fact this DVD is awful. The worst part is that it is only in fullscreen. It was orinaly filmed in 1.75 aspect ratio. It also has no real supplements. When a anamorphic widescreen version is released with some extras I will buy it and give it a better reiview. Until then I will not buy it.
29 Disney's charm fills this movie!
Disney has a way of making you smile, and this movie is no different. My girls, ages 4 & 3, enjoy this movie..and so do I! It's a story about a Fox who befriends a puppy and as they grow up their friendship must change since the Hound is now a Hunting Dog trained to hunt foxes! It's cute & will keep you & your kids' attention to the end! Grab a box of tissues, just in case!
1smileycat :-)
30 Overlooked Platinum Edition?
I did not expect too much out of The Fox And The Hound before seeing it, because this movie is treated like any other "Gold Collections" such as Alice In Wonderland, Melody Time, The Black Cauldron, or even collectors items such as Saludos Amigos and Fun And Funcy Free e.t.c.
However, once I started to watch, I could not stop the film. I truly enjoyed the heart-warming, but still a little sad story as much as I enjoyed Pinocchio. Although there aren't great songs in it, the animation is lively and full of face-and-body-expression like the beast in Beauty And The Beast. (And for this reason, this movie is a little too frightening for young children under age 4-5.) This movie also tells a good moral and a message.
I believe The Fox And The Hound as well as Pinocchio deserves more than Gold Collection but less than Platinum Edition. Therefore I put four stars.
31 Definitely a Disney Classic!
I just purchased this on DVD and I think it is one of Disney's prime movies. It teaches us about love and friendship and the loyalty that goes with that friendship. I am appalled that some would think this movie violent. There are so many shows that air on REGULAR TV in this day and age that are much more horrible than this film about friendship. This film teaches about life and values. About what can really happen in the world. A baby fox raised by a caring woman and a hunter that is selfish and interested in only what he can track. The fox and the hound meet and become the very best of friends, not even knowing that they are supposed to be enemies. This just proves that we should not be judgmental. In the end, the hunter finally understands what loyalty is. My mother took me to see this movie when it first came out in theaters and to this day I can still remember that there was not a dry eye as we left that theater. The Fox and the Hound remains to this day, one of my all-time favorite Disney movies and I am sure it will be a hit with my son as well.
32 Loss of Innocence
Disney studio's 1981 production of THE FOX AND THE HOUND seems to have been made mostly by the newer generation of artists at the studio. The film's look is similar to 1977's THE RESCUERS. Dismissing the high strung and flamboyant personality traits possessed by the likes of Bernard and Miss Bianca from the previous film, THE FOX AND THE HOUND concentrates on the more homespun qualities that were created for the bayou characters. This folksy and laid-back approach bolstered by Pearl Bailey's songs sung as Big Mama Owl and Buddy Baker's unpretentious score at once sets THE FOX AND THE HOUND apart from previous Disney animated films. In fact this film has a very un-Disney look about it. The film leisurely unfolds a story about an orphaned fox named Tod adopted by Widow Tweed, a farming woman. Tod befriends a puppy named Copper owned by Widow Tweed's neighbor, the hunter Amos Slade, and they become friends. The fox and the hound make a pact of lifelong friendship. Inevitably after Copper is trained to be a hunting dog and they both grow up the two must confront each other. One is the hunter and one is the hunted as is ordained by nature. The film does not create genuinely frightful images thanks in part to the loosely drawn animation and its good-natured tone, yet its message is perhaps stronger than any Disney animated film. Things are much simpler when you are young. Once you grow up things appear in a much different light depending to what degree you were taught. The film uses the allegory of the fox and the hound, natural enemies in real life, and their pact of friendship to demonstrate the adversities of life's realities and the effects it has on each of us. This film seems deliberately aimed at very young viewers, yet its message spans the range of anyone old or young enough to comprehend it. I'll admit that this was never one of my favorite Disney films. Even my daughter did not like it. It is not showy or flashy. Even the animation is very simplistic. After watching it again recently I now see that I missed the film's payoff. As film viewers, the older we get the more sophisticated we become. Sophistication breeds complacency sometimes to the point where we miss the point! What looks like a cute little movie with fury animals on the surface to an adult, may be an emotionally awaking experience for a little child, a glimpse of what lies ahead. I think the filmmakers gave our young ones more credit for deductive feeling and emotion than we did. As an adult I found watching the first two thirds of this film a rather laborious task. The final third is where it comes alive and also comes full circle. For a very young child however, the entire film is very entertaining. For the very young child the lesson learned is a bonus. The payoff for me is the final scene where Copper begins to fall off to sleep and we hear an echoing voice of his pact of lifelong friendship to Tod that was made when they were children. It was very reminiscent of the final scene in THE YEARLING and I felt a tear run down my cheek. Sometimes the only tangible thing we have left of a happier time is our ability to revisit that time in our dreams. This is an important film.
33 The picture quality could be better...
Although this DVD has improved sound quality over the VHS, this DVD does not have the same improved picture quality of other Disney animated movies on DVD. In addition, the Gold Collection DVDs from Disney don't have as many extras as other editions (i.e. Collector's Editions) so it's not the best buy out there. I'd still recommend this movie to DVD purchasers since The Fox and the Hound is one of may favorite Disney animated movies.
34 Not our favorite!
Generally I like these Disney movies. The story seems like a good moral. But this is my least favorite of the Gold Series.
Although the story line is positive (friendship) the shotguns (fired at the women, animals in the gamer reserve) other forms of violence (death of the mother in the beginning, mistreatment of the dogs) and stereotypes of women ("empty headed female") and southerners (as readnecks living in shacks in the country) pretty much limit any positive message.
After I had seen the movie I realized that it wasn't the best pick for my two-year-old girl. Luckily, though, she's not all that fond of it either.
35 Poor DVD video quality
The picture quality in the DVD version is very poor. I expected a cleaner picture, but it was very grainy and fuzzy. I was very disappointed.
36 A Classic!
The Fox and the Hound is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time! My little boy and I love to cuddle up on Friday nights, pop this DVD in, and laugh, cry, and sing through the whole movie. This movie is a classic Disney movie, my family and I love it. If you don't own it, you should...it's a great movie!
37 Not as heartwarming as I remember...
I remember loving this movie as a child. Maybe it's the cruelties of life that have hardened me, or maybe it's the fact this dvd is crap, but I regret spending $30 on this dvd. Not to say the characters aren't cute and the ending doesn't bring about a slight misting of the eyes, but let's face it this movie drags on. To be honest the read along version (an extra on the dvd) was a lot more heartwarming than the movie. Nonetheless, if you have children between the ages of 3 and 8 I'm sure they lack the skepticisms I hold against this movie.
38 One of Disney's best animated movie of the 80's
Since Disney released 'The Fox & The Hound' in 1981, five years should pass, before they got another succes with 'Basil The Mouse Detective'.
'The Fox & The Hound' is a charming animal fable with the babyfox Todd, and his best friend, the pup Copper, they grow up, and then the real trouble begins, when Copper becomes a huntingdog!
Both the characters and the backgrounds are excellent, and created without any help from computers, the voices are outstanding, and there are only three short songs, these are the reasons for a perfect animated movie for kids over 5, including their parents, who will get some education of this unforgettable and adorable movie!
39 The Fox and the Hound Gold Collection DVD
"The Fox & The Hound", is widely considered as Disney's best animated feature in their 70's & 80's era (spare "Little Mermaid"), I agree. The film shows animation that seems to come straight from Disney's 1st Golden Era. Like the review says on the cover art, this movie does give the mood of "Bambi".
Aside from that, "The Fox & The Hound" has an intriguing story about friends that should be enemies by nature. The entire plot leads to an exciting forest climax, where the two's friendships are tested.
I do agree that the film may be too intense for younger viewers. However, this is a major problem that has occurred becuase over the years, Disney films were labled as little kid movies. And that isn't always the case, as this film shows. Definatley for 5 and up...
40 Disney's worst DVD
This is probably the Disney Classic that I like the least.
Released in the early 80's, the era with the poorest animation quality for the Disney troop, the story is also one of the least interesting ever chosen for an animated film.
For a double boggie, the quality of the video is preposterous. It seems as if no one really cared enough to check the master they where using for this DVD.
41 Go Read the Book
the truth is, Diseny took a title and a few names from the original book and tore out the rest of the story to make a cute and cudley tale. The book may not be the best book in the world, but it is so real and makes a reader so aware of what humans do to animals. Don't watch this again until you found Dan Mannix's book The Fox and The Hound. Then go read Adventure Happy by his wife Jule Mannix 9 (if you can find a used copy)
42 Wrong message sent to our kids with this one!
The more I watched the more I was outraged! All I was hearing was how the kind and caring old woman next door to this angry old man was made out to be a "muddle headed female" said through out the movie and how it's okay to break the law and any cost. One example is how this old man is firing his shot gun at this kind old woman in hope to hit her fox for something he never did, after that he goes to a wildlife game preserve and sets traps for this poor fox and sets fires and tries to kill whatever gets in his way. When he finally is injured and tired of fighting and has to admit this fox actually saved his life (he should have been eaten by the bear!) He then goes home and the kind old woman has to nurse his wounds wail taking verbal abuse from him. "Remember only you can prevent forest fires"!
43 This movie has the power to make the strongest of us cry!!
You can have your ''Mulan's'',Your ''Toy Story's'' and your ''Emperors New Groove'' but this [In my opinion] is the best ever made Disney movie [along with the lady and the tramp!]
The story begins with a Vixen fox running away [from a hunter] to save her young fox cub.She dumps him in a long bush, says her last goodbye and runs off, later being tragically shot by the hunter. The little fox cub Tod is taken in by an old widow [with the help of Big Mama the owl!!!].He forms an unlikely friendship with the hound puppy Copper. But their friendship is put to the test when Copper is taken on a hunting trip with his master and his mentor, the cynical old dog Chief. During that winter, Tod grows into a full fledged adult fox. After the winter, Copper returns [also grown into a large adult dog] with his master and chief. They find out they can no longer be friends after certain accidents involving Tod and Coppers master.Feeling she can no longer look after Tod, the old widow releases him into a wildlife reserve.
THIS IS THE PART WHERE I BEGIN TO CRY!!
After his sadness, Tod makes friends with a female fox named Trixy and they begin to love each other. But their happiness is ruined when Copper and his master scout to seek and destroy Tod.
NOW I BEGING TO GASP!!!
Now there is a full fledged fight involving Tod, Copper and a large, ferocious bear!!!!
To tell you the ending would be a crime so I strongly urge you to rent or even better...BUY this wonderful disney masterpiece!!!!!I would rate this disney movie 10 out of 10!!!This is what disney films used to be made of!!!!!
44 actually, it's a terrible film.
When this movie came out, I saw it immediately. I hoped it would be like the Disney films that they rereleased every 7 (or so) years when I was a kid - the older Disney films that everyone talks about.
Boy, was I wrong.
The film tries to be a "message" film: friendship is good, people aren't born being enemies, and so on. Unfortunately, they forgot to have the important things - plot and good animation. (In one scene with a waterfall, you wonder if they decided to do it "on the cheap".)
I stopped seeing Disney films for a decade. It took "Beauty and the Beast" to get me back to the theater for one, and after that I went back and saw "The Little Mermaid" also.
I would see this other two films ("Beauty/Beast" and "Little Mermaid") any opportunity I could. However, this "Fox and the Hound" is a dog.
45 I Saw This Video In Preschool
I Saw This Video In Preschool When We Were Leaving For A Field Trip To The Zoo.
46 Excellent, and very sad statement on friendship.
The reality of friendship is a tough thing for kids to understand until they've lost friends and look back on life.
This movie portrays a 'soul-mate' type friendship, broken up by external issues, and then the sad re-meeting.
When the two friends band together against a common foe, that's an illustration of true friendship. When they do not return to their 'true friend' status afterwards, it's a sad statement of the harsh reality of friendships and for that matter, truth, trust, etc... terribly fragile objects, all, and once destroyed, not the same vessels of invincibility they once seemed.
Very good movie. Worth owning. Watch it with the kids, though.
47 Cute, but slightly depressing...
For those of you who haven't seen The Fox and the Hound yet, go see it. Now. It has always been one of my favorites, but when I watch it now that I'm older, I realize just how sad it really is. {spoilers} Two best friends forced apart by reality, only to be brought together again later... as enemies. Of course, Copper (the hound) remembers Tod (the fox), but that's about that. They don't become best friends again. They go their seperate ways. Sad indeed, but definetly worth seeing.
48 Heartwarming, value renewing film.
The Fox and the Hound, though far from being the best Disney animated film, is well worth a look. It is the tale of two childhood friends who struggle to keep their friendship alive in the face of adversity and prejudice. This may seem like heavy fare for the younger set, but it's actually perfect for the whole family to watch. It reaffirms the virtue of a loyal friendship, and that is something we should value... especially today!
49 The older Disney's farewell film of friendship
"Old Disney"'s last masterpiece shows the very meaning of friendship as Tod (the fox) and Coper (the hound) become friends though born natural enemies. A very touching story indeed...the grand fanale!
The lovely tale begins when a lonely widow adopts an orphaned fox cub who she names Tod. The mischievous fox soon meets up with Copper, an adorable hound puppy. As the innocent pair grow up together in the forest, they become inseparable friends. While disobeying their families' wishes, they create a very powerful bond during the course of the film, and you get to know them well. The reviewer for Amazon was wrong this time--this is one of those timeless ones. While it isn't "Snow White" or "Fantasia", "The Fox and the Hound" is a touching movie, and children can learn a lot about friendship and bonding from it while still being entertained. However, be prewarned about the fanale scene, in which Tod and Coper reunite to face an almighty bear. This scene is very intense, and the youngest children may be frightened by it. "New Disney's first real scenes of pure intensity are scattered throughout the 1994 blockbuster "The Lion King". If you saw that film, you know what I mean. And if you see this film--let it be savored. It is the last of those old Disney films that you can guarentee are long-lasting classics. (HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!)
50 DEVOTED DISNEY FAN
I LOVE THIS MOVIE. A friend of mine likes it too. I remember watching it when it came out in the theaters in 1981. I loved it. As soon as I can I will buy this movie!
51 There couldn't be a better Disney movie to own on DVD.
For me, the Fox and the Hound cannot be matched by any other Disney film. Unlike the stiffer, older films and the newer, hokier ones, the atmosphere in TFATH is just perfect, truly a revolutionary point in Disney's timeline. The animation is very fluid and the characters have great design and movement. Most of the songs are more like talking than singing, but they're few and far between and manage to get the point across. A nice change from usual Disney fare in the surprisingly sad ending. Considering I'm pretty desensitized to on-screen emotion, it's unusual that I cry every time I watch this one. It's the ONLY Disney movie that can make me. Even so, there's a number of comedic moments to get rid of the tension. I'm not sure where the Amazon review got the idea that the characters lack depth. Believe me, by the time this one is over, you'll be wanting to see much more of all of them. It's an excellent feature that carries an important message all wrapped up inside a lovable, heartwarming, and poignant story. You owe it to yourself and your children to see this one.
52 THE BEST OF FRIENDS
this is an adorable movie with a valueble lesson about friendship. everyone should watch it.
53 Great movie, DVD is a little light on the extras, though.
This is one of my all time favorite Disney films. There is so much to like about this movie. The characters are all likable, the animation is great, it has the classic Disney feel and you are not bombarded with ridiculous songs that take away from the movie. Ignore the Amazon review that says the characters don't have time to develop a meaningful friendship. Many times in my young life, I made a friend over the course of a summer only to see him or her or myself move away and feel a great loss because of it. Kids make friends much more easily than adults and sometimes we seem to forget that. The only thing missing from the DVD version is a widescreen format and a few more extras would have been nice, but that is a very minor complaint in this otherwise great film.
54 Good, but a step below more recent Disney efforts
"Fox and the Hound" had relatively little box office success when it came out in 1981. The story does have home-spun appeal, but doesn't really come together as a memorable experience.
The story centers on an orphaned fox, taken in by a kindly widow woman when he is just a kit. At the same time, across the creek at the next farm, a new hunting dog pup is brought home by a gruff hunter. The two, the fox and the hound, soon run into each other and become fast friends. Reality soon intrudes on their friendship when the pup, Copper, heads off on his first hunting trip and returns as a seasoned hunting dog.
The voice of Mickey Rooney as the mature Fox was somewhat miscast. A more youthful actor would have gone over better for me. Sandy Duncan made a great lady fox's voice, and Kurt Russell as the mature Copper was a good choice.
It's clear that Disney was pulling heavily on its stable of actors to provide the voice work for this film. Later Disney efforts haven't done that -- come to think of it, does Disney even have a stable of actors anymore?
The strongest part of this movie has to be the scene of the bear attack -- total power, that! And I liked the side characters, the woodpecker and the sparrow who were in constant search of the caterpillar. Big Momma was OK, but not my favorite. The music was appropriate, but in lower class than the kind of music Disney now uses.
All in all a good show, definitely worth 4 stars, but not up to a 5 star rating.
Enjoy!

55 Disney is the master of storytelling.
This is definitely not one of the best drawn Disney films. It looks more like a Saturday morning cartoon. In this movie though, Disney shows it is the master of storytelling through animation. In Disney tradition, a parentless character slowly finds a friend, warmth and security. It will evoke Bambi and Lion King but with a different twist. Disney asks the characters, "Which is more important? Nature or nurture? Can you leave your essential nature or can your essential nature be loved out of you?" While the fox remains loyal to the hound, the hound develops new loyalty to his owner and mentor. Their early friendship is tested when they are placed in a situation outside of the one they always knew.
I have to say I loved the song that the widow sang when she had to release the fox. I would love to play it for my daughter when she graduates from high school. The song is about how no matter how much you love someone, you have to allow them to be what they are going to be.
These days, we lack truly family films. I go to the video store and find very few films appropriate to show the kids, yet not too sappy or simple to enjoy as adults. This film pleased me, my husband, 3 year daughter and 12 year old son. I strongly recommend it.
56 A Disney Masterpiece
The Fox and the Hound is a nice animated movie by Disney. There is the meaning of friendship in this story and is a great story for any child. The Fox and the Hound will always be a great movie by Disney along with other animated movies. This movie is recomended to any parent who has a child that likes Disney antimated movies.
57 One of the best Classic Disney films.
This touching story has universal themes that are very important. It explores the theme of friendship, and says that true unconditional friendship can overcome many obsticals. I think that this story has one of the most important messages that almost any disney film has touched on. I can honestly reccomend this movie to everyone.
58 Old school Disney is still the best
Ever since I got reintroduced to The Fox and the Hound back when it first got released to video, I was simply amazed at how fantastic and heartwarming this movie was. I knew, right then, that it would remain my number one favorite for all time. Now that it's been re-released for video and dvd, I'm as happy as a songbird. I consider this movie to be Disney's best. Sure you've heard that said about lots of Disney movies before. Why is this one different? First of all, like some of the best of the old movies, The Fox and the Hound has a lot of good lessons, the most important being friendship. The characters are enchanting and heartwarming, and some are even very well developed characters, leading convincing lives with rich emotional relationships. This movie has no need for hokey humor with puns and jokes, and it doesn't have the standard good versus evil formula. Considering this and the lessons, this movie makes even the best of the new Disney look like Saturday morning cartoons. The drama and emotional level in this movie are amazing. If you haven't seen it yet, don't be surprised to find your kids hiding. And don't expect a dry eye either. The songs aren't anything you'll want on a soundtrack, but they're still very nice, and the subdued approach allows for the story to flow. This movie has all the heart of Bambi but has a more realistic, more personal story. The new Disney may make very nice movies, but they still can't touch a story about friendship. Also, while the new Disney movies seem to reward violence, this movie shows the consequences of violence and rewards true friendship. The Fox and the Hound proves that old school is still the best, and this is certainly the best of the best. Pick it up. It'll make a fine addition to the collection.
59 Must have!
This is my all time favorite Disney movie. I will never forget when my uncle took my cousin and me to see this. I was so little but I remembered every part of it, I even remember crying in the movie. I even remember understanding it's true meaning. Friendship is just as important now and understanding our differences is still just as important now as it was then. I have waited and waited for Disney to release it. I can't wait to get it. I can't wait to show my neice and my future children.
60 Always Excellent!
As a 30-something, I still cry when I watch this movie; it always touches my heart, my emotions, my very soul. Everyone is different, obviously; I not only own this movie, I bought the LP (album) when it first came out because I love the songs! For myself, this movie has the most meaning in my life. I have always considered this my Most Favorite Disney Movie ... and still do!
61 A Sweet Simple Story Of Friendship
Like the song says..."When your best of friends..." Before the high-tech world of Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King, Walt Disney brought together this simple story that teaches us that friendship is all that matters in life.Copper and Todd shows us that even growing up in different worlds we all can learn to live together. It's a lesson all kids( and kids at heart ) should learn.
62 AN ANIMATED FILM THAT EXPLORES THE MEANING OF FRIENDSHIP
We rented this video for our five year old daughter. Well, she ended up LOVING it so much, that now we are going to buy the movie when it comes out on DVD! This is a story that revolves around two "arch rivals;" a fox and a hound, who meet when they are a mere kit and a pup. They then go on to develop a special friendship that is put to the test when reality intrudes. There is one part of the movie that is so emotional that it moved both my daughter and I to tears! But fear not: the movie DOES have a HAPPY DISNEY-LIKE ENDING! This story involves a lot of action, along with many adorable, codgy, and amusing characters. In addition, the animation is beautiful; reminiscent of Bambie. But most of all, The Fox and the Hound explores the true meaning of friendship against adversity - something we all can relate to! In my opinion, this movie should be a part of every Disney collection!
63 A great story...
Many other Disney movies are older (Cinderella, Bambi) and many are newer (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast), so I appreciate this movie because it came out in my youth, and remember wathcing it and reading the book. Great 'buddy' story between the title characters. Makes a point w/o getting heavy handed or preachy.
64 Fox and the Hound
This movie is a cherished one of friendship and hardship between to unlike animals. It inspired me and i loved the context. It is one of my all time favorite disny movies made and my children who are 2 1/2 and 1 just love watching it. This movie was made for children of all ages from 0-102 this is one that the whole family could enjoy over and over again.
65 The Fox And The Hound
One of my favorite movies of all time. Disney done it againwith its 24th full-lenght film The Fox and the Hound.Tod and Coppertwo friends who will have to learn the real truth of Best friends pulled apart from the enemy side. I love this film and the story of true friends who search to find the meaning of a true friendship for ever even if your friend is to be your enemy. A must for your video Collection, I give it two thumbs up. Hope you love this movie as much as I do too.
66 Great movie compromised!
Have to agree with Disney Fan from Illinois- there's no excuse for issuing this movie in full-screen only. As a consumer, it offer's me no choice. One of the reasons I enjoy buying DVD's so much, as I did laserdiscs in the olden days, is the ability to watch the ENTIRE movie, not just what will fit on a TV screen. Particularily in animated features such as this, where the artistry of the animators is as much a part of the enjoyment as the story itself. So, Five Stars for the movie, 1 Star for the full-screen only presentation. Go, Topper!
67 Great movie -- terrible DVD!
This is one of our favorite Disney films. Why the low rating? The film ratios have been changed; in other words, the DVD is full screen instead of the original theatircal ratio of 1.75:1. Come on Disney, offer DVD's in their original format or give consumers both versions like the MULAN DVD. Animated films from other studios (Iron Giant, Prince of Egypt) are available in both formats. Don't Disney fans deserve the best as well?
68 Fox and Hound Fan
This is one of my favoite movies ever made. I went to this in the theater when I was 3 or 4 and cried so hard they had to take me home. I was so young I was convinced that the ending would change, so I begged to go to it again. Of course I got upset again! Now that I'm older, I can hardly watch this movie without tearing up. This has a great lesson attached to it, along with being adorable!
69 A really sweet movie
I remember my dad taking me to see this movie back when I was 4 or 5. I really enjoyed the movie then, even though I'm pretty sure I didn't quite gather the overall message. "The fox and dog are cute" is probably what I was thinking. WHen it was last released on video, my dad bought it for me and as I watched it, I actually CRIED! The movie is so sweet and so sad (but not sad in a bad way). You can relate to the movie because I'm sure everyone had a best friend that you are no longer friends with for whatever reason. This movie shows that even though you aren't together, you continue to be friends no matter how different you are. Great message for kids (even if they are too young to get it now, eventually they will). There is one strong weakness to this movie though. The songs are horrible. This didn't need to be a musical. The song's themselves are why I took off a star.
70 The Best Movie about friendship
i loved this movie. this is the heart worming story about a fox named Todd, who befriended a hound named Copper. Even though they were supposed to be enimies the two became best friends. When Copper grew up he learned how to be a hunting dog by watching the old hunting dog Cheif that he lived with. He tried to explain this to Todd , but Cheif intervened. Copper decided to let Todd go, but became furious at Todd when Cheif got hurt. Now enimies for life, Copper hunted Todd at a Wildlife Preserve and...

79 Children's entertainment at it's best
The Fox and the Hound, wonderfully adapts itself fro the novel and blends a wonderful cast (mainly animals and birds and an adorable caterpillar) into the typical magic and enchantment inherent to a disney movie. The film's realism also teaches children that the world isn't as care-free as Sleeping Beauty and other idealistic cartoons where good vs evil and good always wins. It subtly combines these elements of (sometimes harsh) fact with the persisting qualities of friendship and kindness. I have seen this movie many times and even as an adult, still watch it often. I highly recommend it.
80 marvelous bit of story telling
