The Jungle Book (Limited Issue)

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom Keogh
1 Everything about this Jungle Book is beautiful
Everything about this Jungle Book is beautiful. As a kid I was especially drawn to the music and liveliness. But the whole movie is just grand! Please check the colours, moving images, the voices, the soundeffects, the characters, the songs, the in-between music, the (sometimes harsh) humour... Whenever you feel low-down or beaten, just try to sing Bare Necessities or even better, I Wan'na Be Like You (and scat along). You'll be okay in a second.
2 Great film, a must for your video collection
I loved this movie as a child and as an adult, had to get it for my child. It's just so fun to see Baloo singing "The Bear Necessities" and dancing to "that beat." I love Phil Harris' voice anyway and it just makes the movie in my book. That goofy Bagera (aka, Baggy) is just very funny as he tries to get Mowgli to return to his own kind. Particularly before Shere Khan finds him. And, let's not forget Shere Khan's wonderful voice - I forge the guy's name but what a singing voice too! Wow! I love that bit he does with the vultures close to the end of the movie. Wow! But old Baggy and Baloo eventually get Mowgli back to his own kind and go off dancing in the jungle together, arm-in-arm. Can you imagine Victor French ever doing that? He just seems so proper! And, let's not forget the snake. I love how he coils around everyone and then gets his tail tied in a knot! Pretty funny stuff. Then the elephants parading through the jungle - we have an elephant fan in our house and well, those scenes just stole the show.

If you want a good movie without all those evil witches, sorcerers, you name it, then this one is for you. It's just very cute and very well done. It's just a shame that Walt Disney didn't get to see it finished before he died. Plus, the clips at the end of the animators and voice-over actors was just awesome to see. It is so very interesting seeing the behind the scenes makings of movies and this one is no different. I'm just glad that this one is out there. What a great childhood memory for me and now, one for my own child to have. Great movie!
3 Kipling's fantasy tale
This is my favorite of all the Disney animated movies. The combination of voice talent, good music, and the quality of the story all combine to make it a near perfect movie.

"The Jungle Book" is Rudyard Kipling's story of Mowgli, a boy raised by the wolves in the jungles of India. Mowgli cavorts with his buddies Balloo, a lazy bum of a bear, and Bagheera, a worry-wort black Panther. His very menacing enemies are Shere Khan, the tiger, and Kaa, the sibilant python. It's a child's dream tale of life in the jungle, free from the restraints of school and parents and civilization.

The highlights of this movie are nearly endless: Phil Harris is superb as the laid-back Baloo; George Sanders plays a tiger with upper-class diction and (one suspects) unusual sexual preferences; Louis Prima belts out a showstopping musical number. The Elephant march is touching, funny, and toe-tapping. Mowgli himself is a charming, sunny boy.

Mowgli is a forerunner to the likes of Tarzan. It boggles my mind to think of the imagination -- the daydreams -- Kipling must have had to come up with this story.

4 From a kid who never grew up.
I'm 52, my kids have grown up and I have no grandkids yet. I bought this for me. It's one of the bare necessities of life!
5 Contrasting review
I know how many people gave five star reviews on here. Mine is not a five star review. I am giving you my straight opinion on this movie.

One, I don't think this movie is fit for family viewing. Adults will not find it interesting or entertaining, and it hardly serves any purpose in teaching moral lessons to children. Two, this cartoon almost borders on animated pedophilia. It just looks sick and wrong, really, with this older, scary bear taking this young innocent away and teaching him his "bear ways."

This is not charming entertainment. This is a pain. If you want a charming, older Disney movie you should check out their animated version of Robin Hood. The music in Robin Hood is far better as well. I have always disliked "The Jungle Book."

6 To Run with the Wolves: A Girlhood Dream
I'm a little kid, don't remember exactly how old, elementary school age. My teenage cousin promises to take me to see *The Jungle Book*. She falls asleep. Minutes are ticking down to show time. I poke at her but she snoozes on. Elders tell me to leave her alone. I stand over her and glare, using my powers of mind control to will her awake. It works!

I was just desperate to see this movie. I loved all the Disney animals stories and *The Jungle Book* turned out to be my favorite. The lively songs, lush animation, compelling characters, and strong storyline left quite an impression on me. Can never forget the loving and gentle Bagheera, that kooky monkey, and Baloo, Baloo the lovable bear. Ooh, and that sinister Shere Khan striking fear in the hearts of all and the slithering sneaky snake always up to no good. The voices used are wonderful and fit the characters to perfection. I was in heaven, and it has stood the test of time by remaining one of my favorite animated films.

I just wanted so badly, just longed to be a girl version of Mowgli. Raised by wolves, living wild and free in the jungle, playing with the bears and apes. Climbing trees and swinging from vines. Yep, that was the life for me. I sobbed at the end, crying: No, Mowgli, don't leave your animal friends behind and live with people. You are making a big mistake! Would he return to his original home? I wondered, why of course he would!

As an adult, I understand Mowgli's decision to join the village and live with his own kind. The girl in me, though, still doesn't get it and yearns to run free.

7 jungle book
jungle book is an enjoyable and funny film it is wonderful for children and i thought it was good as well.
8 A Family Favorite
The Jungle Book is one of our families two favorite Disney movies (the other is Mary Poppins). As close as can be expected to Rudyard Kiplings book, The Jungle Book is the story of the boy Mogli who is raised in the jungle by a pack of wolves, with Bagheera the panther as a close family friend. One day, SherCan the tiger returns to the jungle, with a special hate for mankind. It is decided that for the wolf pack's safety, Mogli must go. Bagheera offers to return him to the "man village". Of course, Mogli doesn't want to leave the jungle, the only home he has ever known, so he slips off into the jungle and has a grand adventure.

The Jungle Book is a movie that even the adults in our family don't mind watching more than once. The story is good, the gags are funny, the adventure is gripping (for a children's movie), and the score is really and truly one of the greatest and jazziest ever put to a Disney movie. In fact, our five year old loves the songs so much, that it sparked an new interest in jazz music in our home with the family!

I highly recommend this movie to any family looking for whole-family fare. Unlike some of Disney's more modern fare there is no implied sexuality, short skirts, or bloody bullet wounds. Just 100% wholesome family entertainment.

9 The Jungle Book
It took me some time to realize how wonderful this movie really is. I watched it only once the day I bought it in 1994 and never looked at it for years. The main reason was because I unknowingly bought a bootleg and when I discovered it when I got home, it took off my enthusiasm to watch it. And so the tape just lay there on the shelf for years, until my then 8-year-old cousin came to my house (by this time I've already bought a legal copy of the tape and watched it a couple of times) and I gave her my old copy. Boy were she and her brothers happy! The tape never left their VCR for a year. And so I decided to give this film a second chance and I'm glad I did. "The Jungle Book" is an excellent film. The animation is remarkable; some of the vistas in the film are breathtaking. The music is catchy, you'll be humming to it all day long. Also, all the characters, and especially Baloo, are very easy to love. Add this masterpiece to your collection. You won't regret it!
10 100 STARS***************************************************
My whole family simply loves this movie. As I stated in the title I give this movie 100 stars. It was Walt's last and arguably one of the best pieces of entertainment to be produced while Walt was still alive. Can there be a more perfect matching of characters and voices in an animated film? I don't think so.
11 A Jazzy Animated Classic from Disney
Disney's 19th animated film tells the story of Mowgli, a young human found in the wreckage of a small boat by the panther Bagheera. He takes the young mancub to a family of wolves who raise the boy as one of their own. 10 years go by, and news begins to spread that the tiger Shere Khan, who distrusts Man, has returned. Fearing for Mowgli's safety, Bagheera agrees to take Mowgli to the nearest Man village, where he will be protected.

Mowgli, however, doesn't want to leave the jungle, the only home he has ever known. He runs away from Bagheera and meets Baloo, a happy-go-lucky bear, and decides to be like him in order to stay in the jungle. It's up to Bagheera to convince the two of them that Mowgli will be safer in the Man village. Together, the three set out against the many hilarious and menacing obstacles that await them on their journey.

A Disney classic, one of the best things about this movie is the voice work: Sebastion Cabot as the up-tight panther Bagheera; Phil Harris as the "jungle bum" bear Baloo; George Sanderson as Shere Khan, giving him almost an upper crust dignity; and in two of the best roles in the film, jazz star Louis Prima as the orangutang King Louie who wants the secret of man's fire from Mowgli so that he, too, can be a man; and Sterling Holloway as the sly snake Kaa who only wants the mancub for a tasy meal. The film is also full of great music, including "Trust in Me" and the ever-popular classics "I Wan'na Be Like You" and "The Bare Necessities."

This is a family film full of fun, music and adventure that everyone is sure to enjoy.

12 A Disney masterpiece!
This was the final movie to be supervised by Walt Disney back in 1967 before he died, this is a animated re-telling of Rudyard Kipling's famous story which is set in India about a boy who was raised by wolves must go back to his man-village before the evil tiger Shere Khan kills him.
A very entertaining and brilliantly animated classic with great voice acting, great songs that you won't forget, Dixieland legend Louis Prima as King Louie and lovable characters.
13 Its got the bare necessities and a lot more
We ranked this movie 15th of out 41 narrowly beating out the little mermaid. Could have been a guy thing because there are 4 males and 3 females in our family, and the girls wanted to rank Mermaid 15th. So, take your pick. If you're a girl in my family, this one is 16th and Mermaid is 15th. The strengths here are the cute retelling of an old story and some good music.

We had a lot of fun by gathering the family together to rank the 41 Disney movies we have that include some cartoon work. All the kids, ages 6 to 27, participated along with mother and dad. Lion King was selected number 1 of the 41 as the family favorite, but narrowly. Peter Pan was 2. Pete's Dragon 3, Beauty & the beast 4, Sleeping Beauty 5, Snow White 6, Robin Hood 7, 101 Dalmatians 8, Fox and the hound 9, Cinderella is 10th, Rescuers 11, Hunchback of ND 12, Aladdin 13 and Aladdin King of Thieves 14.

14 THE VIDEO WORE OUT! Thank God it's on DVD!
Get them before their gone. Our kids watched the video so much that it wore out. Great movie. Glad it's on DVD!
15 The jungle Book and Travelin Tyke
The video is absolutley timeless. Still holds up to todays music and animation even though it's over 30 years old. I HIGHLY reccommend this one for any children under 6. Has anyone seen the Travelin Tyke video yet??
16 The Jungle Book
Based Rudyard Kipling's classic story, Disney's JUNGLE BOOK delivers a laugh out loud, fun, sing-along classic. In my opnion, this was one of the most fun Disney classics. Along with a great soundtrack and fun musical numbers, the entire family will enjoy this one.

Mogli is a young boy who was orphaned when he was a baby and then was found by a pack of wolves. Now that Mogli is older, Shiar Khan the tiger, wants Mogli dead. Now the wolves and Bagira the panther have to bring him back to the human village to be with his own kind and for his own safety. Mogli wants no part of that and while running away from Begari's sight, he runs into Baloo, a fun loving Bear who teaches Mogli how to have a good time and the "Bear Necessities".

I really love this movie. This one is a lot of fun. I only had one problem with this movie and that was a little animation recycling in the "Friend Like Me" scene with King Louie (if you saw ROBIN HOOD or ARISTOCATS, you'll see what I mean). But even that wasn't enough for me to take off a star. I still think this is a 5 star Disney classic.

If you're looking for other fun Disney classics, check out ROBIN HOOD, ALICE IN WONDERLAND and WINNIE THE POOH 25th Anniversary DVD. And if you're looking for a great Rudyard Kipling book, look for RIKI TIKI TAVI. Enjoy!

17 Great Movie For Kids
This is a great movie for kids, but not teens or adults. Deffinatly do not buy it for anybody over 10 years old at the most. It's good other wise.
18 Jungle Book
I live in Tanzania, East Africa. I saw this movie in Drive In Cinema some 15 years ago. It was the night I will never forget.
I remember it very much. What the movie has, the village homes made of straw like materials, Palm Trees, Jungle Scenery, the kind of boat feature in which Baby Mowgli was found are all here in real life. Including the moonlight scenery against background of jungle and Palm Trees. If you watch this movie in any African country, it will be a treasure in your memory and I keep watching this DVD over and over again. I am also looking forward to Jungle Book 2. Lion King is also another one which can match the specs. Nice work. Keep it up.
19 Walt Disney's last animated movie
Walt Disney died when this animated movie was still being made. And it was released in 1967, months after Disney's death. And animated movies all started with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And this movie is kind of like both Tarzan and George of the Jungle all in one. As the movie opens, a panther named Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot) finds a lost man cub all along in the jungle. So he brings the baby to a pack of woods and about a few years later the baby now growing into about 5 maybe 10 years old man cub named Mowgli (Bruce Reitherman). But Mowgli has to go to a man village because a tiger named Shere Khan has return to the jungle and is going to kill Mowgli because he hates hunters with gun and fire. But Mowgli wants to stay in the jungle, and finally Bageera gives up a lets him be on his own. And he meets a bear named Baloo (Phil Harris). Shere Khan is not in the mvoie until about the middle to end of the movie. So little time for a villian if Shere Khan is a villain.
20 This is a classic
This, I think is one of the easier disney movies for kids to relate to because it doesn't get too complicated. It's about a little boy who loves the jungle and he has to leave it. Kids can easily relate that in a number of spectrums from leaving a friends house to the disappointment of bedtime. Bagheera and Baloo are absolutely adorable. They keep their animal mannerisms throughout the movie, which I find incredibly charming. For instance, Bagheera yowls if something falls on his tail.
22 Buyers Beware!!!
First of all, I would like to warn DVD buyers out there. There are many unlicensed copies of The Jungle Book as with many other Disney Videos. Most sellers of These Videos will use Phrases Such as, "All region," "Import," "Imported," "Will Play In All VCR's," "Does not have original case or artwork" "Does not have insert," "No Chapter index," etc. These Are not official US releases, Nore are they Official Disney Releases! They may be much cheaper, but The quality is not the same! You get What you Pay for!

With that out of the way, I would also like to say that I love the Movie. It has been one of my favorites since I was a little boy.

23 Disney's best
This is by far disney's best animation ever!

Mowgli is sassy, resourceful and independent without being in the least bit irritating. Something none of todays animation movies (with the exception of chicken run) seem capable of achieveing.

This is long before the days of computerized everything, each scene is a genius work of just watercolors and ink pen.

The most hilarious scenes are those of Col hathi and his jungle march. The jazz bit with the monkeys is a very close second.

"The bare necessities of life..." could be the byword by which we live.

Sher khan, Col. haathi evoke days of british imperialism with ease. These characters and those of Kaa, Bhageera, Bhalo and of couse Mowgli will surely live on forever in the hearts of those of us who were young and innocent when this movie came out.

Hopefully the video will bring home the magic to my kids and everyone in their generation.

24 wonderful entertainment for the entire family
This is one of Disney's best. The story is not too dark - like I think that Bambi or Dumbo are. It has great music and a nice story with enough excitement to keep the kids riveted. Additionally, it provides nostalgia for parents and grandparents who enjoyed the movie the first time around.
25 They don't make 'em like this anymore.
After watching this movie with my kids after not having seen it for many years, I realized how great this movie was and is. Sure, the animation is not up to the technology of CGI or other advances of today, but the story and songs are unsurpassed. "I wanna be like you" is still my all-time favorite song and movie scene!!!
26 Fantastic!!!
Our 2.5 year old can't get enough. He loves the elephant marching scene and the apes dancing. He laughs everytime he watches it. My favorite part is when he sings "It's a bear neccessity". Great movie for the kids and parents to enjoy. You won't get tired of watching your kid laugh through the movie...garanteed to put any kid in a good mood.

27 Absolutely the best animated film
This is absolutely the best animated film I have seen till date. The screenplay is so well written that you feel that its not a film but something which is happening right around you. The emotions...everything about it is just Super.
28 A Classic
I loved this movie as a child, now my son does. He has a number of favorites, and this one is at the top of the list.
29 A Classic and a joy...
No more need be said...a must buy for any video collection!! Thoroughly enjoyable!
30 Best movie of all time, no competition anywhere else
Hey, i am eddie ducrest and i am 15 years old, i recently was digging through some old movies and came upon one i had seen wen i was really young, i was bored, so i popped it in the old vhs player and let it rip, IT TOTALLY BLEW ME AWAY, i coudlnt beleive it, the music was awsome, the characters cracked me up. I havent seen a better movie since. There is just something magical about it. I think since it was disneys last movie it will live on forever. My favorite charictor i would have to say would be King Louis, the monkey king. The story has a little something for everyone, it always makes me laugh when i watch it, and i always sing along. I would have given this movie more than five stars but it wasnt an option, i would give this movie Infinate stars. i would like to thank walt disney, and everyone else who helped create this wonderfull maserpeice.
31 Catchy kid-and-parent pleaser
My three year old is fascinated by the characters and never tires from acting out or mouthing along to the classic scenes. Yes, this is classic Disney, and it is a beautiful story well told. Beware the scare factor for some smaller kids - the intense atmosphere of the jungle and some of the "suspense" scenes can have 3-year olds concerned to the point of being turned off the movie alltogether.
32 Picture Quality...
I was watching TJB with friends last night and we all noticed how ORANGE Shere Khan was for the first time...just wanted to add how sharp this DVD is--even if lacking bonus features. This movie really polished up well!
33 News from the Elephant Brigade...
The Plantinum Edition DVD of this movie will be released in 2006! That means just 4 years of waiting and watching on VHS. ::grin:: I've rented THIS DVD version, from the library, however and find that it's VERY lacking in bonus features, but that's ok as I assume that the Platinum release will just be great and bursting with special things.

The Jungle Book is one of my favorites...I recommend it to everyone. There's the ever-lovable Baloo and the hilarious Kaa...the 100 foot python. And the fun-song soundtrack that will have you bee-bopping for about 80 minutes...or well after! It's too bad that Walt died just before this picture was completed.

34 A must-have for the video collection.....
Still a great movie, after all these years! I enjoy watching it just as much as my almost 4 yr old son. I had forgotten just how nice this movie was.
35 A CLASSIC !!
the last one made while walt was still alive, grab it while you can on dvd, very uplifting.
36 The Jungle Book a Must See for every child
As a child I saw this movie in a movie theater. When my daughter came along I could not wait to introduce it to her. She is now 5 and it is one of her very favorites. We watch this one as a Family a lot and it is a special delight to us. It is animated fun and my husband and I are still enthralled by the characters. When you see the people who did the voices and personalities of these characters you are really quiet impressed at the talent. And even a bit Thankful because they have brought so many years of delight to children and adults alike by bringing this story to life. It is a definite must have for every Family and do share it grab that bowl of popcorn and sodas and plant it in front of that television and watch your child light up and share the pure joy of the imagination gone fun. You will be delighted that you took the extra fun time too, to share. So will your child.
37 Most Popular DVD around the House
With a 3 year old kid running around the house, this DVD is the most popular, and we watch it together with him minimum 5 times a day, at least the elephant march which is his favorite part.

Excellent picture and sound quality, I don't have to recommend you the story itself, because it has proven to be one of the best. I could go on and on about it, but I trust you to know a little bit about Kipling, just as I trust Disney to produce high quality anim. cartoons as they usually do.

The great thing about it is that we watch it in several languages - Spanish and English (Although French is available as well - unfortunately we don't know it.. yet). So what can I say.. This is a classic that should appear in every DVD collection especially if you have kids.

38 Fun jungle romp!!
Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Books" are the basis for this fun, animated trip through the jungles of India. Mowgli, a human orphan, is reared by a pack of wolves (his parents are Akela and Raksha). When the wolf pack votes to send the "man cub" away, he is taken in by a friendly bear called Baloo (voice by Phil Silvers) and a pantheer named Bagheera (voice by Sebastian Cabot). Many adventures ensue, including a run-in with monkeys and their king (voice by Louis Prima) and a quartet of mop-top vultures, as Mowgli and his friends try to avoid Shere Khan, the tiger. The music in this film is particularly good, with such excellent Richard & Robert Sherman compositions as "Bear Necessities" and "I Want To Be Like You." Very small children might find this movie a bit frightening ... but others will love it.
39 Disney's The Jungle Book - Limited Issue DVD
When it comes to DVDs, I would probably be the first in line to complain about releases that have mediocre supplements. But I felt like I had to make an exception when it came to Disney. All of their "Limited Issues" seem to have little or no extras at all, but the actual animated classic that the disc holds, for me anyway, more then makes up for it.

"The Jungle Book" is one of the first Disney Movies that I watched as a kid. I bought the DVD, and I saw the movie today for the first time in around 12 years. The entertainment value is suprisingly still there, and more over, as a grown up movie fan, I can appreciate the film more as a classic in animated films from Disney & not just a 'cartoon' to pass the time, like I considered it to be as an adolecent.

The picture and sound is satisfying for the film's age and genre; the Spanish Dubbing is an excellent addition, for some of my family anyway. But it pales in comparison to the English vocals; The animation is terrific, too bad it wasn't created in a widescreen aspect ratio, it would have been a great visual to have looked at (The film is presented in it's original theatrical aspect ratio, 1.33:1).

Now that the announcment of Disney's 10 "Platinum Editions" have been made (The first of the 10 being "Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs", but "Jungle Book" will be one of the other 9), this "Jungle Book - Limited Issue" is a fine way to have the film until the full-fleged "Jungle Book - Platinum Edition" is released sometime in the next decade. Thanks to this DVD, I am now looking foward to add more of Disney's hard-core classics to my DVD collection.

40 Kiddy Glue!
This is one of the best videos Disney has come out with. My children (2 and 3 yrs) will sit, and WATCH, and sing along with the admittedly catchy tunes. A great addition to our Disney collection!
41 A really excellent movie
This is a really great movie. The singing is great, and I really love all of the animals and the dancing, and everything about it. This will always be one of my favorites.
42 This is the original, don't go for the others...
What E.T. means to Spielberg, Jungle Book meant to Walt Disney! Sigh, too bad he was not around to see the results or the impact it had on all of us. It was his last dream project but did not see the finish of it. Though I love cartoons this remains my favorite. It stole my heart as a kid and still has me captured!
43 A masterpiece to set your life to!
The Jungle book is what disney was once all about, FUN! it brings song and dance to a magical far off world with talking animals and kids who survive without TV and then brings all that flying into your living room. Its briliant every single time you see it. Perhaps the Best animated film known to man (close contenders being Alladin and Robin hood) This is a Must.

The Jungle book is a movie that everyone has seen some say it has political motivation, i laugh in there faces, this is a movie about a kid for kids, its full of life, and up to date whenever your watching it... isnt that the magic of disney?

44 Underrated Disney Masterpiece!
What a terrific movie! I had forgotten how wonderful this movie was until we purchased it for our daughters. The music is stunning, and the voices are perfectly fit for the characters they serve. Especially noteworthy is Louis Prima as "King Louie". The score is beautiful as well, using much haunting alto flute playing. A masterpiece that deserves a place on everyone's video shelf!
45 My favorite
If I had to pick my favorite Disney movie, it would be this one. Why, love the music!! Too bad it is a typical Disney DVD with no extras. Would have loved them.
46 A good movie with even better music
Mowgli was raised by wolves and now he's growing up in the jungle. He's been in the jungle all his life, so he doesn't know what it's like to even be around another person. But it's not as bad as it sounds, Mowgli has tons of great friends such as the hilarious Baloo the bear. But he also has a few enemies, mainly a gruesome tiger named Shere Khan, who doesn't like humans at all. It's up to Mowgli to survive in the wilderness, and with the aid of his friends, he'll have a good chance of not having to worry about Shere Khan. But will Mowgli ever find out what it's like to be around other people?

"The Jungle Book" is a good movie. It has good animation, it's entertaining with the animated drama and the hilarious antics of Baloo, and it has some of the best songs out of any of the Disney movies, such as "Bear Necessities." I recommend anybody who likes animated movies to take a walk in the jungle and give "The Jungle Book" a chance.

49 The Bear Necessities
This wonderful, delightful, joyful animated story of a young mancube that was orphaned by Shere khan as a baby.He was saved by Bagheera and brought to a wolf family and was raised as one of there own. About nine years later the man hating Shere Khan retured to that part of the jungle. The wolf clan decided that it would be best that Mowgli (the mancube) went back to the man village. Bagheera voluntered to bring him back. They encountered the sly snake that hypnotyze his pray, the army elephants that never forget, the wild orangatang king that lives in the temple, the beatle like voltuers, and you can't forget the great one Baloo who has a free loving spirit.
50 Welcome to the 'Jungle'
Yet another in Disney's self proclaimed Masterpiece editions, The Jungle Book is a lot of fun but not one of Disney's best. Watch this video for some great songs and wonderful characters but please excuse the flimsy story which is all but cancelled out in the film's final scene. Still, the movement captured by the Disney animators, especially in the case of Bagheera, is a marvel to watch. With all these great characters (Baloo, Shere Kahn, King Louie wonderfully voiced by Louis Prima) and memorable songs (The Bear Neccesities) it's unfortunate that the story couldn't also have been worthwhile. Still, no one will resist adding this to their clam-shell collection before it's gone...for now at least.
51 It's just a bare necessity!
The feature-length cartoons Disney continues to produce are fine films, but nowhere near as good as classics like The Jungle Book. Unburdened by the modern-day Disney habit of giving every film a heavy family-friendly moral message, the Jungle Book is just 100% pure fun, with a cool hero (Mowgli), entertaining friends (especially the bear Baloo) and some great villainous characters (most memorably Shere Khan the tiger). This movie was made years before Phil Collins or Elton John were drafted in as cartoon soundtrack composers, and the songs are just awesome - "The Bare Necessities", "I Wanna Be Like You" and Kaa the snake's hissed encouragement to "Trust in Me". Get this DVD while you can!
52 A ?Bear Necessity?
This movie is more than just another Disney masterpiece. The Jungle Book is a great tale of friendship and adventure. Although almost every animated feature that was created during Walt Disney's life is a classic, this one in particular holds a special place in the heart of many men (and now thanks to video and DVD, boys) who saw it while growing up. There isn't a boy alive who can see this movie and not want to be Mowgli. What a life it would be to live in the jungle, with friends like Baloo and Bagheera. It is every young boys dream to be so free.

That is not to say that only boys will love this movie. As with all Disney films, this one will be enjoyed by all members of the family, young and old. I saw it growing up, and never forgot my memories of the movie, and the days afterward, singing the songs and dreaming of adventure.

The music in The Jungle Book is some of the best in any Disney movie. "The Bare Necessities" is simply one of the best songs ever. Add in the fantastic animation and the characters that come to life (who wouldn't believe a bear could sing after seeing this?), and you have one of the many classic Disney stories.

Starring the voices of Disney regulars Phil Harris and Sterling Holloway, as well as Sebastian Cabot (Mr. French, to those of my generation) and many others, this movie is too good to not buy.

Get a copy of this DVD before Disney removes it for another generation. It is the best that Disney has to offer.

53 Classic! My favorite animated movie ...
Walt's last project, and perhaps the finest animated script ever. Who could critisize the snappy Louie Prima, warm voice of Harris as Baloo the bear, or the unusual animation plot of a boy being fostered into manhood by a variety of morally(and immorally) oriented male animals. Although shot fairly flat compared to the more modern animations and films, the characteristic acting animation will never fail to enthral any viewer. The DVD isn't bad, but VHS will do in a pinch. Get it, especially if you have never seen it!
54 My favorite Disney film
By far, this is my favorite Disney & what does it is the music. Some Disney films may have characters I love more with the great music, but this one does it. Well done by the Sherman Brothers.
55 not an introduction to kipling but disney
if you want your child to enter the magical world of kipling, don't buy this dvd. This is the magic of disney at its best. Iremember reading kiplings books as a child, what an experience. But disneys version is just a little candy, that'll leave you the taste of wonderfully written songs sang by talented artists, and a story far from resembling its inspiration. but it is worth the investment
56 Di$ney, what is wrong with you?
The Jungle Book was made in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.66:1, the same as The Little Mermaid. What I can't fathom is why Di$ney released The Little Mermaid properly letterboxed on DVD, but did not grant The Jungle Book this same respect.

I think I know why they did this. Di$ney already had a widescreen transfer of The Little Mermaid all ready to go, because just a few years earlier, they released a widescreen laserdisc of that film. But in the case of The Jungle Book, Di$ney would have had to do a complete remastering of the film, and they were simply too lazy. As a result, anyone who watches this DVD is missing approximately 16% of the picture. This is something I will not tolerate, and I refuse to buy this DVD. The Jungle Book is a wonderful film, and Di$ney screwed up bigtime by releasing it in a cropped 1.33:1 aspect ratio.

I'll bet that when The Rescuers comes to DVD, it will be in widescreen format. Do you know why? Because about a year ago Di$ney released a widescreen laserdisc of the film, so the transfer is all ready for DVD. Otherwise, I am pretty sure they would chuck out a "regular" 1.33:1 version.

Di$ney, if you make a DVD, make it in widescreen, or don't make it at all!

57 Another Disney money making venture
I agree with some of the other reviews - especially that the DVD does not offer anything more! In fact, the VHS copy I have has a "Making of" which is not on the DVD! Disney has priced this DVD too high with nothing extra. The movie itself is classic and if you don't have it on VHS, get it on DVD. Still, I feel Disney is milking too much out of these limited re-issues; at the very least they could include extra features on the DVDs (I bet they will issue special edition DVDs down the road so that we will have to buy another copy!).
58 Jungle Book
It's brilliant! A film with characters and songs you will never forget! A superb introduction for any child to Kipling's classic!
59 terrific for kids
has a bit of what could erroneously be interpreted as racisim; but is actually a tribute to Louis Amstrong, Toots Theilman, Bichet and others.
60 Pleased
I have always loved this movie. It is my favorite Disney. The only thing that would have made it better would have been some extras and the suposed suround sound. Of the 9 DVD's in the boxed set (that all state they have full color discs) 3 did not have "full" disc art including this one. I don't care if it is the same as the VHS, This one will not break as my VHS tape did and it is so much crisper in color and sound. If you don't have it, get it. Hopefully they will not reissue this in a new "gold" edition ala Pinnochio.
61 the jungle book
my advice is - dont bother! this dvd is exacty it`s the same as the vhs version! .it is NOT dolby surround as stated but only stereo and there are no extras on the disc at all.the colour and sound are the same as the vhs version-not re-mastered or enhanced at all for dvd.if you have it on vhs dont waste your money!
62 Disney's classic Jungle Book
I am nearly 4o years old & this film brings back all the joys, magic, & wonder that we sometimes loose touch with as we grow older. I still catch myself singing the songs whilst doing some chore. I bought a copy for my cousins although my uncle is the one that wears out the tape! They live in another county so I dont get the chance to see the movie much. I foolishly did'nt buy a copy for myself & desperatly want a copy to be cherished in my home to share with my friends, so come on Disney re-release the film pleeeeeeese.
63 a benchmark for classic Disney
My son is 23 months and he literally levitates out of his seat when I pop this video in. The story, characters and especially the music just leaps from the screen. It is as entertaining for me as it is for him. I still love it after some 50 shows. The trouble is that it is unavailable on any format and my tape is on loan. Come on, Disney, re-release this one for all of today's and future addicts!
64 This DVD is a wallet batterer...
...but unfortunately it's worth it!

The Jungle Book is by far my favourite Disney feature - and the only one (at this price) I will buy. It is a superb film, with great, catchy tunes (listen out for "King" Louis Prima!).

The voice talent is first rate, especially George Sanders as Shere Khan and Sterling Holloway as Kaa.

As an afternote, Di$ney are apparently releasing zero extras for this disc - extremely disappointing for a DVD with a $40 RRP.

65 The best Disney movie EVER
This was the last movie made by Walt Disney before he died. In my opinion this was his best. The music is incredibly rich .. jazz overtones and all ... the characters are colourful.

Rudyard Kipling would be proud !!!!

66 My son is 21 months and watches this movie 5 times/day
My son is 21 months and watches this movie 5 times/day (if I let him). The other night I left it at my sisters and he cried and cried for "Jungle Book". It was a VERY long night!
67 Jungle book was the best I love the tiger he was cool
The jungle book was so cool. I am a animal lover so I think it was neat to see many different kinds of animals. I am sorry to say I was goingfor the tiger. The tigerwas the best part of the movie. Whata animal so pretty, wise brave and yet dangures. The bear was cool and so was the wolves. The jungle book is the best next to the Lion king
68 Wonderful, fun, and great songs!
This Disney classic is one of the best. Fun, great music, and a movie everyone can enjoy.
69 The Jungle Book is fun for all ages.
The Jungle book was an absolute delight from beginning to end. Rent it or buy it you can't go wrong.
