2 Doesn't necessarily promote health
I read this book and tried the diet for three weeks. Although I didn't feel hungry and thought the shakes were okay, I found myself suffering from headaches and just not feeling very well in general. If you're looking for a crash diet, this might work, but I don't think it is a very healthy overall eating strategy for the long term. It does, however, force you to get more than enough fruits in your diet, which I enjoyed. Another thing: you need a good blender and enough time to clean it out a couple of times a day. Sounds silly, but it was expensive and time consuming for me.
3 To "A fatty" from New Jersey
I don't agree, that protein powder from Herbalife is expensive. You can buy a 12.7oz container for $28.50 (excl. tax). I use it as recommended and one container lasts at least for two weeks. It is the first thing that really helped me - and my whole life was a diet!

4 Wow! Easy and fun... not hungry and great results
I got this book at the recommendation of my ShapeWorks coach and I was amazed at how well the book goes along with the ShapeWorks program. At first, some of the science in the book was "deep", but I realized that the ShapeWorks program already had everything I needed. I found out later that Dr. Heber consulted in the development of the ShapeWorks program... no wonder they work so well together!

Thanks to the book, and the help of my ShapeWorks Coach, I am now at my ideal weight (lost 25 pounds since I got the book), I've lost 17 inches of body fat, I feel energy and I'm not tired... and I've actually GAINED two pounds of lean muscle-mass. Nice! Get the book and get a ShapeWorks coach!
5 worth a try
I have purchased and read the book and will be giving this a try. For those of you that have been successful....what brand of soy protein are you using? I have found one at GNC. Not willing to buy the very expensive Herbalife product. Help.
6 Great book - Don't Listen to the Sceptics
The truth is that Dr. Heber is right about the protein theory. Whether you "like the shakes" or not, well documented, scientific evidence shows us three important points missed by those who are too nearsighted too see the value in this book. 1. Each person has different dietary requirements (ie:protein) 2.protein CAN be satiating 3.maintaining your personal protein needs can help you lose weight and maintain health. Wake up and realize that if you don't like the food recipies prepared in the book then find alternatives! Take action in regaining a healthy weight and fitness level instead of whining and waiting for the "majic pill or diet". The only way to treat obesity is to understand the biochemistry behind the body's nutritional and exercise needs. Dr.Heber and other scientists are doing the research to help us do this. Look it up for yourselves on Medline. This program is a lifestyle change, not a "diet". I lost a steady pound a week with a shake in the am, a protein bar for lunch, a sensible dinner and daily exercise. And I was never hungry. By the way, Dr.Heber does say you have to exercise - he has a whole program in the book (directed toward the idiot who obviously didn't read the book yet called it "silly".

THE LA DIET?? Puleeeze!!!!! What's next, the Flushing Diet? The Bronx Diet? The China Town Diet? These books only make people fat. Diet boloney!

I guarantee you; the same fatties that will be on this diet will be on a different diet next year. A new fad diet.

I was very interested in this book and diet program until I found out that herbalife was involved. I am a student that really can't afford to support another network marketing company. I don't have anything against them but I can't afford their stuff either. I thought this was going to be something realistic.

I found this book very informative. It is packed with information that you can use nor just theory like other books that I have read.

If one is looking to lose or even gain weight the healthy way then this book is a must read. Good Carbs, Good Protein YEAH.

10 The worst diet I have EVER tried!
I bought this book and tried the diet. I found the high protein shakes to be disgusting and bad tasting. I had heard good things about the L.A. Shape Diet from friends who had tried the diet but they were most definetly wrong. The only people who should go on this diet are people who enjoy eating horrible food. Also the high protein shakes were not filling at all. I reccomend buying any diet book BUT this.

To the reader from Boston who gave the book only 1 star though admits s/he hasn't yet received it (that doesn't make ANY sense!) because s/he found the same word for word reviews on other sites and believes the reviewers are "on the payroll" - you are wrong. I once reviewed an air purifier on Amazon and found my review copied on numerous sites over a year later! I don't know how the other sites do it, but they take amazon reviews and use them. They even used my screen name. No one asked my permission either. And I am not on anyone's payroll but the church I work for. I guess once you post something it is in the public domain.
12 Weight Loss Based on Science---How Novel!
Dr Heber's credentials are impeccable--he's been director of the Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA for decades, and has been working in the area of bariatric medicine for 30 years.

His eating plan is based, not on only his own patients, but studies and results of weight loss patients all over the world.

I was aware of the basics of this program before I bought the book, and was more than happy about my results, having lost 17 3/8 inches in the first four weeks on this diet. But I really appreciate the recipes, as well as the depth of data he offers for his dietary recommendations.


13 The Healthy Carb Diet , in a Simple and Easy-To-Do Format
We've all heard the craze about the High-Protein/Low Carb Diets, but let's face it...they are unrealisitic. And Dr. Phil tells us to just "Get over it" and "Think ourselves thin"... Please!! (And if this did work, how come he's still overweight?)
Finally, Dr. Heber tells us the whole truth and nothing but the truth and it's based on his 30 years of research in nutrition and 11 years of research in the field of obesity treatment.
This is about the RIGHT amount of protein and the RIGHT carbs (since when should eating an apple be considered wrong or unhealthy??)...this is the healthy carb diet. He gives you a plan, recipes, shopping guides, exercise guidelines as well as help with mindset and thinking. Alot of weight loss is mental, but he also gives you an easy to do, nutritious, delicious and filling way to achieve your weight loss goals. This is a COMPLETE guide to weight loss, fitness and overall health and wellness. Brilliant!! Bravo, Dr. Heber!!
14 The Last Stop For Weight Loss
What an incredible book that builds from Dr. Heber's first book, "What Color is Your Diet?". I have read both cover to cover just recently. I implemented Dr. Heber's program into my daily lifestyle just one month ago and I have lost over 20 lbs and I have incredible energy. I have not felt this good since High School and that was 1/2 my life ago. Thank you for helping me get my life back!

I just read these exact comments on at least 2 other websites. They are the same, word for word. I haven't even received my book yet and I'm seriously considering cancelling my order, just because these reviews have lost credibility with me. They were probably posted by people on the payroll.
16 So Informative!
I've just started reading this book and already I have learned so much. In response to a previous negative review I just wanted to comment that unfortunately most people are not eating "real, whole food", we are eating fast, highly processed, loaded with fat and calories super-sized drive-thru meals and America is now 60%+ overweight. This plan is simple, convenient, and highly nutritious. I don't have to worry about what I am going to find to eat thoughout the day while I am at work and I can focus on preparing a colorful, whole-food dinner for my family when I get home. I LOVE this program!
17 Shilling for Herbalife!
It's very disappointing that a professor with such terrific academic credentials can leverage them in this way---towards a revealed commercial relationship that seems to at least coincide with a completely new point of view.

Dr. Heber's What Color is Your Diet pushed the need for brightly colored fruits and vegetables---and the goodness of antioxidants for health. Ok. But this book seems all about Extreme Makeovers and processed protein supplements: the opposite of improving yourself from the inside out and of eating real, whole foods which are unprocessed or minimally processed.

There are lots of examples of this type of commercialism: it's no secret that sales of Bill Phillips' books were coupled to EAS supplement sales (EAS was his supplement company). And there's nothing wrong, at all, with making money with what you write, or sell. But the commercialism is huge here, and I think overtakes the nutritional facts---exactly those facts about which Dr. Heber wrote in his last book.


18 L.A. Shape Diet is empowering!!
Hi! I'm not a Herbalife distributor like probably some of the authors of the other reviews are, but I have to say that this diet is working wonders for me. I'm a 23 year old male, and I've struggled all my life to lose weight. I have tried every imaginable diet out there, (Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, E-diets, Atkins, weight training, aerobics, low-fat diets, even a combination of healthy nutrition and exercise), but none of those things seemed to work for me very well. My friend recommended this book to me, and I am so thankful to her for ever doing so. The magic bullet about this plan is that personalized protein intake is a key here to achieve the results everyone is looking for. This is probably the reason why everything I've tried before didn't give me good results. I was very skeptical about trying the meal replacement deal again, but after reading how different this shake preparation is, I went for it, and I have to say that these shakes get me full and I don't feel hungry at all between meals. My energy levels have increased as a result, and I finally feel my body is receiving good nutrition. I am combining this diet plan with resistance bands, and the results I'm starting to see are amazing. I'm starting to trim the gut and the love handles around my chest without getting flabby skin. This is just awesome!! What's most surprising to me is that I get to eat fewer calories, but I don't feel weak or hungry at all, and with the other diets I would. There are not many high-quality meal replacements out there, but from my experience, my highest recommendations are Formula 1 from Herbalife, and GlycoSlim from Mannatech. The shakes from these companies meet the nutrients and quality standards described by Dr. Heber, and they are both scientifically proven to be low-glycemic. The above nutrition companies also have other high quality supplements to combine with one's efforts. I highly recommend L.A. Shape diet. After all, what if it works for you the way it's working for me and others? :)

I am most impressed by Dr Heber's background and his quest for providing the people of the world the right information so they can change their health. He's got the credintials and science, to back his research not just theory.
I've implemented his program already and have increase the fruits and vegetables in my diet.

20 Re-Shape Your Shape! (Learn your shape & how to love it)
This is an excellent book!! The knowledge of Dr. Heber is endless! He not only educates you on your body shape, but also to optimize your shape & to see results! I have lost over 30 lbs.& went from a size 13 to a 4 (but still unhappy with my shape)! I have been following Dr. Hebers personalized plan for ME & getting the correct amount of proteins & "good carbs" for MY body & my results are FANTASTIC!! First 3 days of doing this program I lost 6lbs., great energy, no cravings & very satified! I can tell my body is re-shaping a getting rid of the "baby tummy" I have been left with after 3 kids!! My body is toning up & I am actually happy with the way my body is "shaping" up!! Thank you Dr. Heber for all your knowledge. Use this book to get optimal results with optimal health!

And you may also want to get your facts straight about the founder of Herbalife Int., Mark Hughes, before you claim to know everything about the company and nutrition. Dr. David Heber is revolutionizing the way the world needs to think about nutrition and saving thousands of lives in the process, this is a wonderful book, something every person needs to read!

What a fantastic piece of work! This book takes a look at the fact that eveyone is different, and everyone needs a personalised aproach to health and weight loss to succeed effectively in the long term. David Heber shows you how to simply 'personalise' your weight management programme to get the best results. It is based on late science findings, coupled with a product that has changed literaly millions of lives. I'd encourage anyone who wants to get a ahead, to use this programme. I think this book will be a best seller!!!!
25 Finally a personelized diet Just make sense
After years of Atkins, south beach Weight watchers etc. here is a way to lose the fat while maintaining the body mass in an healthy way(yes fruits and vegis are aloud, mr atkins).

I am on this diet for some weeks now and this is the best shaping diet I have ever tried.
I have seen in the forward of the book that Dr. Heber is associates with Herbalife. I find it a great way to spread the knowledge of science through the dedicated Herbalife masangers.

26 Finally, a nutritionally sound and balanced diet book!
In the world of fad diets, Atkins, South Beach, Hollywood, cabbage soup, cookie, low carb, high fat, no carb, etc. Dr Heber has finally given the world a prescription for lifelong health and wellness. We have always been told to eat a balanced diet and exercise, but no one has been able to tell us how to do that. Dr Heber finally has. Dr Heber has used his many years of experience treating patients as the Director of Risk Factor Obesity Clinic at UCLA to write this book, and has dedicated his entire life to helping people.

His credentials are impeccable. He holds a B.S. Chemistry, Magna Cum Laude, UCLA, 1969; M.D. Harvard Medical School, 1973; and Ph.D. in Physiology, University of California, 1978. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Clinical Nutrition by the American Board of Nutrition. He directs the National Institute of Health (NIH) Center for Dietary Supplement Research in Botanicals, the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded Clinical Nutrition Research Unit and the NIH Nutrition and Obesity Training Grants at UCLA. Anyone who suggests that Dr Heber wrote this book for money doesn't know Dr. Heber. (I'm sure Dr. Phil doesn't care about the money he makes selling supplements because of his book. I don't see anyone complaining about that.) Dr. Heber's association with Herbalife as Chairman of the Scientific and Medical Advisory board is advisory only and, as he states in his introduction in the book, Herbalife has provided him the opportunity to get his message out to tens of millions of people. He recognizes that the Herbalife philosophy is making the world healthier through good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

The meal plans and practical advice in this book is presented in a simple to understand, and easy to do way, even though it is based on the latest cutting edge science. He gives us a plan to change how we take care of ourselves including some delicious recipes and easy exercise routines. I have been following Dr Heber's diet and I have never felt better, had better workouts or been able to lose weight faster. Follow Dr Heber's advise and you will live a long and healthy life.


27 I have been doing a simular weight loss program
I found this book very informative and an easy read. Dr. Heber's LA Shape Diet is proven within his scientific research and his patient's results. I had started a program similar to what he suggests at the beginning of March by consuming 100 grams of protein each day, except I have not been exercising, and only eating four of the suggested seven fruits and vegetables each day. My first 3 weeks I have had great energy, better looking skin and hair, less moodiness, zero cravings, nor was I hungry staying within 1400 calories a day. So far I've lost 9 lbs and 11.25 inches and I can actually see a little muscle definition. After reading about my own shape, I've made a few minor changes in my plan and can already feel a difference.

The LA Shape Diet covers all the areas why most dieters fail and offers advice to be successful. I especially liked all the recipies for filling,low calorie snacks and meals. Heber's discussions about how to choose and use herbal supplements is a well written tutorial to help the wellness seeker know what to look for when choosing safe, effective supplements as well as choosing the most nutritious kinds of food at the grocery store. If you want to learn how to exercise, eat healthy and find out what your personal best strategy is to lose weight and keep it off, this is the book for you. The CEO's of the Fast and Processed Food Industry and of all the diet fads out there won't want you to read it!

29 Best Diet Book Ever
I have been looking for a book like this. It takes a sensible approach to weight loss and doesn't follow any of the extremes that have been diet fads- it doesn't tell you never to eat carbs- you just have to eat the right ones. It doesn't tell you to go hog wild on protein- you have to eat the right sources of protein. I have been following Dr. Heber's advice since he wrote "What Color Is Your Diet" and I have never felt better. I start every morning with an empowering shake (from Herbalife) and feel great.
30 A Personalized Diet I can follow
Dr. Heber presents a weight loss plan that is not a one size fits all diet. He teaches you how to determine the quantity of protein you need in your diet to maintain you lean body mass and most importantly to be keep you from being hungry. I now can eat all those colorful fruits and veggies that I could not enjoy on those High Protein Low Carb diets. This man knows nutrition and this gives me confidence in the program. He strongly recommends jump starting your weight loss program with a two meal replacement shakes a day regimen to speed up your success. His shake recipes are outstanding and the program is so easy to follow. This is not a fad diet where you're given lots of one food group in exchange for eliminating another food group. Thanks Dr. Heber for giving us a plan that we can stick with for a lifetime.
