John Gray
"The magic key to health, happiness, and romance is waiting for you in your local health food store," says relationship guru John Gray, Ph.D. Not only do men and women have different communication and love styles, they gain and lose weight differently and need different diets, asserts Gray, author of the bestselling Mars and Venus series. Though he does not have credentials in exercise, nutrition, or weight management, Gray creates a program that, he claims, balances each gender's brain chemistry, resulting in health, weight loss, stress management, and romance. Gray analyzes the specific brain chemicals, hormones, and reactions to stress that affect men and women differently and influence relationships. He recommends an eating plan involving at least three meals a day; replacing breakfast with a low-calorie, nutritious breakfast shake; taking amino acid supplements; drinking "cleansing nutrients"; and avoiding junk food. The exercise prescription is only seven pages long (out of 314), consisting of his "bounce, shake, breathe, and flex" program. This may stimulate brain chemicals, but it doesn't do much for cardiovascular or muscle conditioning. Gray seems more concerned with avoiding getting too much exercise than getting enough or the right kind (according to exercise professionals).

1 Subject Matter is excellent but book is very wordy
The underlying facts brought forth by Dr. Gray are very interesting but as I read the book I just kept getting the feeling that a lot of it was there for the sake of filling pages up with print. I believe Dr. Gray could have written a much more effective book by shortening it in 1/2. Thin is In.
2 Very Disappointed
I bought two copies of this book after hearing him on COAST to COAST AM. I planned to give one to my sister. Well I should have read the reviews from normal people first. I notice the excellent reviews all come from other authors or co-authors or those somehow in the diet or doctor field. I am having a difficult time getting anything out of this book. I find it's presentation frustrating, and a lot of gobblety gook. I tried to find specific information I heard on the show and am having an aweful time doing so. I like a book where I can go to a chapter you "think" is about what it says it is about, and goes to the point without fancying up and saying a lot of nothing in the text. The highlighted text on each page throughout the book is very distracting. The font is too small (age I assume). I am sooo disappointed. ;(
3 INSIGHTFUL GROUNDBREAKING WORK!!

Just when you thought you had read everything there was on dieting, John Gray comes up with some fascinating new insights. Linking diet to brain chemicals, sex drive, psychological wellness and gender in a comprehensive, yet easy to understand manner; this book goes far beyond the other diet books out there. While filled with interesting material, the beauty of this book lies in making dieting as simple, or complex as the reader chooses. The author is fully aware that for most people, diets need to be simple, straightforward, easy to use, and provide results in a short period. I have been using his breakfast shake formula for 3 months now and have noticed a marked increase in my energy level, mental alertness...and yes..even my sex drive! I highly recommend this book.
4 Good Salesman, Bad Advice
Dr. Grey, with a PhD from a university closed down by the State of California as a diploma mill, is a great salesman and story teller. Although his thesis in his new diet and exercise book is intriguing, Grey does not give any references whatsoever as to from where his theories about hormones and their role in nutrition come. Some facts in the books seem dubious, "..the brain uses 20 percent of the calories we consume."
However, because the caloric intake of his nutrition system should be less than the reader would normally take, participants in the system should show a loss of weight over time. And because the theory is novel, a reader will also tend to believe everything Grey says, as believe they "feel" better.
I would feel safer about his nutrition ideas if he had added an appendix of references to scientific or even to popular literature that could confirm his ideas as good science.

8 What a relief to have simple, clear directions
What a relief to have someone to do all the chemistry and science and then write simple clear directions about what one needs to do to loose weight! 11 Individualized Diet & Exercise Programs Simply Make Sense!
Although I have long appreciate John Gray's work in relationships, I have to admit that I was extremely skeptical when I first heard that he had written about health issues. However, I was very pleasantly surprised when I got a chance to read this book. I personally believe that this book is just the first of many books to come on the subject of INDIVIDUALIZING diet and exercising programs to people based on their sex and based on their body type. To me, it is strange that so many people think that there is (or should be) just one "best diet." That just isn't true. Again, John Gray is at the forefront of thinking. To that, I'm not surprised. And finally, I was very pleased that John also included important reference to the great value of homeopathic medicines (that is MY favorite subject!)

12 A better slant on dieting
Not really desiring to lose weight, I was interested in John Gray's book The Mars and Venus Diet and Exercise Solution for its cleansing properties and was not disappointed. I tried John's method in the book for 9 days. Nothing much seemed to happen until just about two weeks after I began the course of treatment. I have always had a sweet tooth, but as I get older realize it is a sugar addiction. I found that I wasn't craving sweets (a common occurrence for 40 years after every meal and often between them) and I wasn't really trying. I wanted things like celery and peanut butter or carrots for a snack instead of cookies. And coming from the world's greatest candy fan, this is saying a lot!! I also found myself naturally drinking more water and feeling lighter and fresher. My skin has a great tone and after several weeks, as I look for signs of diminishing effects, I am pleased that I am still resting in a place of healthful balance. I also have lost several pounds even without trying. I will refresh my liver and remind myself of my wholeness every so often with his recommended treatment as I feel a calling to do so, but for now I feel great.
The other thing I really related to in this book was his presentation of the different chemistries of men and women and what, how and when they are activated. It was a missing piece in understanding my very male husband. Very insightful and clearly intended for more than just a fix-it diet, this book The Mars and Venus Diet & Exercise Solution offers ways to achieve and maintain balance and health within the self and also within a relationship.

14 Wow....and I thought I knew so much.....
Having dieted all of my adult life, I thought I knew it all. Then, after joining Curves for Women and not losing in weight in 3 months with 5 workouts per week the entire time, I spoke with the manager of my workout facility. She recommended this book. I have John Gray's "original" Mars & Venus book but I'm not a big reader so I've scanned it. But THIS book? I can't put it down. Goodness. How interesting. I knew when I put my husband on the South Beach and he quickly lost weight and continued to....or when I'd go to a Weight Watchers meeting and see all those guys just DROP the weight, I knew woman lost differently than men but this book puts it all out there in plain English for even the KIA (know it all) like me to grasp and understand. I thought I was an expert on "dieting" (though none have ever worked for me except to give up the carbs). Thank you, John Gray, for showing me yet another aspect that I never even would have thought existed.

I have studied nutrition for over 15 years, so when Dr. Gray came out with his new book on diet and exercise, I was very interested to read what he had to say on the subject.
Because of my background I didn't expect to find any new information about diet and nutrition. I was delighted to find that this book contains cutting edge, scientific information on diet and nutrition that was not in any of the other resource materials that I had previously studied.

16 Practical, Comprehensive, and Complementary
As an independent personal trainer, I am constantly seeking the 'bigger picture' to health, fitness, and wellness. John Gray masterfully combines a comprehensive view of many aspects relating to general health in a practical and very digestible way. Having reviewed hundreds of books on the subject, I found the inclusion of subjects such as food quality, detoxification, breathing, overtraining, and mineral supplementation very refreshing.
I also enjoyed his trademark 'Mars and Venus' spin. Our physiology affects all aspects of our lives, and he artfully applies this to relationships.
Most of all, I was impressed that he is not offering a 'holy grail' program of fitness. Rather, he offers his program as a complement to the reader's existing programs and individual goals. I already have included many of his general ideas in programs for my own clients.
The only quirk I found was his 'bounce and shake' exercise. Though I'm not completely sure of the efficacy of this technique, I would say it can't hurt. Getting moving first thing in the morning is among the best ways to stimulate the metabolism all day.

John Gray's "The Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise Solution" is a remarkable achievement. That an expert in relationships has taken the time and effort to read and master esoteric research on brain chemistry and made it accessible and usable for us lay readers is amazing.
Edwards Deming, the quality guru, once said: "It's not what you don't know that's the problem; it's what you know that's NOT SO!" Gray punctures many of the myths about diet and exercise that people have been religiously following for years. The famous Pritikin and Atkins diets, for example, do not emerge unscathed.
This is not just another weight-loss book. People suffering from conditions as desparate as ADD/ADHD, addictions, brain concussions, or depression, to name a few, can find valuable new approaches to treatment. It's actually a book on how to effectively manage your own brain chemistry.
The book challenges the dominance in our culture of allopathic (that is, traditional) medicine with its overuse of powerful drugs and their side effects. It supports the use of alternative therapies such as homeopathy and aromatherapy. I read this book in a bit over one day, I could not put it down! I tried the Isagenix products that cleanse the system and actually lost 10 lbs. with their 9 day system and loved how I felt so much that I am now fully endorsing the Isagenix system. I am a chef so I do appreciate that food is a wonderful thing, but I think that these meal substitutes can get your internal system back on track and then you do incorporate the shakes and a healthy meal on a daily basis.

My husband and I have read all of Dr. Grays books. His principles are really easy for us to follow because he is all Man and I am all Woman. But we had trouble with this one. That is because, even though the foods that are good for Mars, and the foods that are good for Venus, are different, we just have one refrigirater, so we got them mixed up. So we are still fat.

Dr. John Gray has done it again. I have been a fan since the beginning and I'm not about to stop now. I'm usually not one to pick up a book on Diet & Exercise, but there was a buzz at the coffee shop about Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise and I'm glad I listened to the buzz. A true testiment that diet and exercise is NOT a destination, but a way of Life! I'm off the late night ice cream and I feel better! I think better! Way to go, Dr. Gray! A must read!
36 YOUR BOOK IS A GODSEND AND CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!
I'm not sure how anyone could write anything negative about this book.
This book, without a doubt, has changed my life forever. Everything Dr. Gray wrote concerning low dopamine and serotonin felt like he was describing me and everyone else I know. I needed naps in the middle of the day (or a cup of coffee), I had sugar cravings (especially Ben and Jerry's ice cream on the weekends), I overate (even if it was healthy food, I still overate), I had night sweats, I didn't have anything left over (emotionally) to give my wife after work. All I wanted to do was veg out in front of the TV.
Now that I've been on Dr. Gray's program solidly for 1 month, my life is 180 degrees different!!! The night sweats-GONE! The sugar cravings-GONE! The overeating-GONE! The naps and low energy-GONE! I barely watch TV anymore and can listen to my wife all night long when I come home from work without wanting to interupt her or "fix" anything! My energy is through the ROOF! All this from 1 book!!!
Since I've read the book and done the program I've turned a bunch of friends on to it. They have experienced the same incredible things as I did and they've all lost weight in the process (some of them an impressive amount of weight)!
I feel like it's this huge secret that nobody knows! I honestly believe there isn't one person on this planet that couldn't benefit from his book. I know it's a bold statement but I truly feel that if everyone did Dr. Gray's program, the world would be a better place.
With so many books on diet and exercise out there, how do you know which one is the right one?! I can tell you right now. Stop looking. Dr. Gray's is it!!!!!!! Read it, do it and you can have HEALTH, HAPPINESS AND LASTING ROMANCE (plus loose some weight in the process).
Reading his book and doing his program is one of those "life defining" moments. It is so simple that people are skeptical. I was at first. We always look for the complicated answer, when, in fact, it's most often the simplest of things that are the most powerful.
A Side Note: Using the Isagenix products he recommends ([website]) is DEFINITELY the way to go. They are so convenient, taste delicious and are not expensive at all. To loose weight the products average to be only [money amount]/day and once I reached my ideal weight, the maintenance plan is only [money amount] day. Who can say that for [money amount]/day you can feel great, have better health, a better relationship, great brain chemistry, more energy, mental clarity and loose weight? No one, other than Dr. John Gray. Do it! Your life will change and you'll never want to go back!!
37 Shame on you, Dr. Gray!
I was shocked to discover that the product Dr. Gray so enthusiastically recommends as a once- or even twice-a-day meal substitute, actually contains a laxative (cascara sagrada). I doubt that this is medically sound advice.
It is listed on the ingredients statement, but many people may not know what cascara sagrada is and what it does. And even though it is a natural herb, taking it twice a day for a sustained period of time is not healthy, and is contraindicated for people with certain intestinal conditions. Shame on you, Dr. Gray--and on your friends at Isagenix--for not pointing this out!
38 I've done what he says and it's PURE GOLD!
I've only skimmed his other books, so I can't say I was a fan of the Mars/Venus books, but THIS book has changed my life! If you're trying to lose weight and detoxify your system and are looking for a deeper understanding of the different ways men and women need to exercise, eat, and lose weight, this is for you.
I have found that by following Gray's nutritional ideas, I have turned my health around, mentally, physically, and in my relationship with my wife. I lost 9 pounds in the first 3 days safely, never felt sick or hungry, and feel sure I'll be able to keep the weight off and maintain my health, using the simple maintenance plan in the book. My wife says I've changed for the better, too: I'm calmer, sleep great, have quit snoring, and am well on my way to losing the 30 pounds that seem to have glommed onto me out of nowhere after I hit my mid 40's. I just couldn't get rid of the weight. I haven't yet tried the Bounce & Shake exercise and plan to, but I believe it's important to do mild aerobic and weight bearing exercise to remove toxins and build lean mass. I walk and do the Five Tibetan Rites, both of which Gray endorses.
I have used the Isagenix products with great success. I feel the cost is reasonable, less than if I took the time to put it all together from scratch. They are unique in their safety, formulation, and speed. My experience with delivery was fine: It took one week to get the product to northern CA from their Phoenix plant.
Gray's personal story is compelling, as is his reasoning about brain chemistry and its link to diet, exercise, and experiences of relationship. I highly recommend the book.

OHMIGOSH! I can't believe this book got published. More than that, I can't believe I bought it!
I love Dr. Gray's relationship outlook and advice and thought that naturally, his diet advice would be equally as great.
What was I thinking? and moreover, what was he thinking?
The important lesson to learn from this is that you don't go see your therapist for personal training and you shouldn't think that you can or should, therefore, you don't go to your relationship therapist for diet advice, unless of course he actually was obese and lost weight! or took a nutrition class.
The crowning blow of this book is the chapter "Endorhpines are from Heaven" no, Dr. Gray, endorhpines are from hard work and exercise. You may feel like you are in heaven when you get the feelings they give you but you must earn them.
This is without out a doubt the biggest waste of time and worthless book for anyone seeking motivation, weight loss tips or real advice. This is someone trying to capitalize on their already successful "Mar/Venus" brand, knowing suckers like me would stand in line to buy it...don't!!!!!
40 The Mars & Venus Diet and Exercise Solution
This book has some excellent information on the science of brain chemistry and how it pertains to health, diet and fitness. Dr. Gray does a fine job of explaining this complex information.
What he neglects to do is outline his diet approach in a visual manner. The book lacks charts and examples for creating the all important breakfast shake. The shake he describes has so many cross references and rules that I'm afraid to even try making it. The Isagenix, which he suggests as an alternative, is expensive (over $40 for 14 shakes) and you have to be prepared to wait 2 weeks for delivery.
If Dr. Gray had added just a few examples of how to use the information he so eloquently describes, I would have given this book 5 stars and be mixing up a shake right now.
