1 Mask of Zorro (Special Edition)
The movie itself was as entertaining and stirring as I remembered from seeing it at the movies, but I was disappointed in the special edition.I bought the special ed for the added features and was annoyed to find that it had no theatrical trailers,no advertising materials, no music video (which I specifically bought this edition for), and only two deleted scenes. My advice to any to buy this edition is this: save your money and just go with the regular version and enjoy this thoroughly entertaining film.

2 could be better!
well, the movie was a mixture of original zorro, batman and indiana jones. anyway that's not important in such movie. it was a great movie afterall but, there was too much ridiculus or unnecessary sequences. I expected a more serious movie. the sequence that zorro stole the black stallion, was one of the worse ones! that old ridiculous story and musical broadwaylike fight scenes was probebly funny for the audience of 40s but it was a great weakness for this sequel! the fight scene between zorro and elena was another ridiculus and even unnecessary scenes. and the first love scene of the movie! oh man! that was senseless! antonio banderas was not the gentelman zorror but a masked unpoliet bandit. can you tell me why in anyway, lady elena loved that bandit? I think they must have met in the party for the first time. and... elena was in love with three different people and didn't know they were same man! what was she? was she a bitch? scenario had too many weaknessess like theses.
and about DVD! I had a superbit edition of the movie and even seen the special edition. superbit has no special features but the picture and sound quality is extremely high. between this edition with no special features and the special edition, I Suggest to all collectors and professional costumers, buy the superbit edition of the movie without any doubt!
3 The Mask Of Zorro
Zorro is back in this epic adventure film for the entire family to enjoy. Although the movie falls into the same cliches and the characters are stereotyped, it's still worth watching. The story takes place after Zorro is already married, but his life is drastically altered when the Santanna realizes Zorro's true identity. Now several years later, a young man's brother is murdered by Santanna, so he now seeks revenge. With help and training from the legend himself, a new Zorro is born to rise and fight the injustice. Overall, this film may not be the best action film out there, but it's definitely worth noticing.
4 Zorro at his best
I really liked this movie. It does have a little blud, but it is fun and acshon packd. Zorro is so cool
5 This movie does a great job of not provoking thought
Completely predictable Hollywood version of the famous swashbuckler, the focus is on the snappy one-liners and the sweeping swordfights. But somewhere between bending over backwards to make sure that we take Zeta-Jones' character seriously (she's from the 1800s, but has the confidence and power that a modern gender-conscious audience demands) and bending over backwards to make sure that we take Anthony Hopkins' character seriously (he may be an old drunk man, but he can fight like the devil once he finds his inspiration), this movie lost me.
6 A swashbuckling movie!
One of the insights I gained into The Man In The Iron Mask from listening to the commentary was that the word swashbuckling had been banned from the set, since a swashbuckling movie was not the intent of the filmmakers. Well, swashbuckling is very much the intent of The Mask of Zorro, a larger-than-life comic action adventure.
Anthony Hopkins stars as the old Zorro, whose wife is killed in front of him by his arch-enemy Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), and whose child is stolen from him by the same man. Vowing revenge, his day comes as a result of Antonio Banderas, a skilled thief and outlaw who seeks revenge for the death of his brother at the hands of Captain Harrison Love (Matthew Letscher). At the same time as these personal conflicts are being played out, the Mexican population of California are being oppressed by their Spanish tyrant overlords, and Zorro, being a man of the people, must save the day. Throw in Catherine Zeta-Jones as the old Zorro's feisty daughter, Elena, and you have your cast.
Zorro is deliberately way-over-the-top. It is done in almost a comic opera fashion, with highly implausible escapes and action sequences galore, featuring very vigorous but nonetheless highly choreographed swordfighting sequences. It is not a movie that stands up to repeated viewing, as the serious and numerous plotholes and implausibilies become more and more painfully obvious the more they are seen. At first viewing, credulity is stretched to the absolute limit, and subsequent viewings significantly diminish the movie's impact. The end action sequence, however, remains impressive.
7 Thrilling
The movie opens with the fantastic exploits of the Mexican Robin Hood, Zorro/Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), before his young wife is killed, his baby daughter stolen away and himself thrown into prison by the Spanish tyrant Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson).
20 years elapses, before an escaped de la Vega begins to train a new Zorro, Alejandra Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) to defeat Montero, and his psychopathic henchman Captain Harrison Love (Matt Lescher).
What follows is a swashbuckling thrilling adventure, where Murrieta proves his mettle, and elopes with the beautiful Elena Montero -who is actually de la Vega's stolen daughter - (played by the very sexy Catherine Zeta Jones).
The scene where Murrieta overcomes Elena in the swordfight is an extremely sexy one , as was the dance scene before. Zeta Jones is an exquisite dancer as well as a great actress.
This Zorro is thrilling enough to acquit itself well with the earlier versions of the saga.
8 The definitive Zorro
Granted, I haven't seen any of the earlier films/TV series/silent movies, but from the various clips that were shown during the hour-long documentary, I think I'll stick to this one.
This has Catherine Zeta Jones in one of her earlier film roles, after the Titanic TV series (she's terrific in that), which got her this role. And no doubt the role that caught Michael Douglas's eye. She practically loses all her clothes from all her top half, but her overly long and fake mermaid hair covers everything, although it's funny watching her laugh about this scene in the documentary. (And as one reviewer describes her so well: this is a woman with the body of a film-star and the talent of a TV presenter.)
I've never been that big a fan of Antonio Banderas, and why all the women go all weak at the knees over him. Nor am I a fan of his overly possessive/jealous wife. (She needs to get a grip on reality and stop the plastic surgery) However, I did like him in this role. He's the first Spanish guy to play Zorro, but then his character in this is actually supposed to Mexican. Make sense of that if you can!
I love all the sword fighting in this, it's beautiful to watch, and particularly during the Zorro/Elena scene, is breath-taking. And there's some terrific chemistry during this particular scene too. I also love how Antonio turns from a wild-haired bandit to an reasonably good looking gentleman.
This special edition features a reasonable amount of extras, but the ones you need to watch are the hour long documentary and the music video. The hour long documentary shows basically everything about the film, from another deleted scene, to an alternate ending, which is almost as great as the original, I can't decide which one I like best. The music video isn't one of the most original videos ever made, but it does feature Jennifer Lopez's third hubby, Marc Anthony, wearing ridiculous looking glasses, with Tina Arena (who?). The song always reminds me of Aladdin for some reason, and it's a very beautiful song.
This is a great movie, a true classic, and doesn't need the use of sex, guns, gratuitous nudity or OTT swearing to get your attention.
9 What a ride!
Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Anthony Hopkins either separately or alone would make this one worth watching, but throw in a hellaciously good adventure story and you've got the ingredients for an all-time fave. Swashbuckling adventurers Hopkins and Banderas join together in a quest for revenge that is a non-stop roller coaster ride of thrills. Zeta-Jones more than holds her own as Hopkins' sexy, long-lost daughter. The violence, except for a head-in-a jar scene, is actually pretty mild and nothing to bother pre-teens. Enjoy.
10 Persiflage, pulchritude and parody
The Zorro legend once loomed large in California. This film, whatever its flaws, might resurrect that romantic myth. The film has given us a fresh, stimulating picture of Zorro as a man instead of a demigod. Updating the story to present an elderly Zorro in the position of training his replacement gives it a solid postmodern footing. Choosing Anthony Hopkins for the role, however, was a superb inspiration. Banderas, although lacking "charm", according to Hopkins, manages to act as both foil and clone to the older Zorro. To keep our attention, the beauty of Catherine Zeta Jones adds grace to a story of intrigue and much violence.
Hopkins rises to the role of ageing hero with his usual finesse. He's lost a wife to murder and a daughter to a heartless, ambitious descendent of the conquistadores. After two decades, justice is an elusive goal. Banderas is recruited as a trainee Zorro II. His wry expressions make you wonder if he's taking the film seriously. No matter - he puts enough energy and skill into it to evoke applause for his enthusiasm. Both Zorros use the lighter side of this story to keep it lively. And there are no dull scenes in this film
Zeta Jones, too, is a good choice for Elena, Zorro's daughter raised by the "bad guy" - Don Montero. It's not important for her to say much. She uses up much energy proving she's not lounging around as a couch potato between roles. A dance scene and a fencing episode ably demonstrate her physical fitness. A confrontation mingling truth, justice and fatherhood provides a serious episode. Then there's the heavy breathing for added enticement.
When Zorro films were made in the past, violence pervaded with lots of blood and many corpses. Modern filming uses a new technique. There's still lots of chandelier swinging, rapiers slashing and cries and moans - except the downed victims have been kicked or bludgeoned by sword hilts. Little blood here. Since the odds against the hero are the same whether the swords strike home or heads, we shrug and wait for Zeta Jones' next appearance. Stuart Wilson [playing a Spaniard?!] makes an admirable villian - cold, heartless, conniving. Yet he has a vision that twists the usual "good versus evil" scenario. He wants to make Mexican California into a republic without a revolution. His idea proves the pivot point of the story. Parody is subtly present in this film.
A Zorro film is hardly deeply inspiring or even able to delve into deep philosophical questions of human nature. It's action, romance, intrigue - in short, entertainment. If you haven't seen this film, i recommend it for that alone. Besides, anything with Anthony Hopkins, even in a subdued presence such as this, is worth attention. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
11 New Zorro, New Age
I have never been a huge fan of Antonio or Jones until I saw this film. With its breathtaking scenery, action and atmosphere it makes you love zorro again! A new zorro for a new age! Very well done film with superb acting. The dvd is full on with excellent picture quality and sound.
12 Zorro No Longer a Hero
Zorro, the hero of Pulps, movies, books, comics and television, has a new movie out. Antonio Banderas, on Larry King Live, mentioned that he hoped this movie would help to keep alive the spirit of the only Spanish super-hero (he in not the only one nor was he at the time of the interview). Well, I think it will do much to keep the name alive but not the spirit.
Anthony Hopkins is Zorro, the Fox. After years of struggle, Spain is pulling out of California and leaving it to the Mexicans. But Zorro slips up and the evil Governor tracks him down, kills his wife, steals his daughter and throws him in prison. Twenty years later Don Diego (Zorro) hears that the Governor is back. Minutes later he has escaped from prison (what was he waiting for?) and is destined to run into Antonio Banderas. After their meeting, Don Diego trains Antonio to be the new Zorro. The rest of the movie involves the plan to create the Independent Republic of California by buying it from Santa Ana with gold dug out of its soil and stamped to look Spanish. Mexico is willing to make the sale because of their war with the United States (it is now 1841).
If you are looking for a fun swashbuckling adventure, then this is definitely the movie to see. If, however, you want to see Zorro, you might find yourself a little disappointed. Gone is Zorro, the defender of the common people and the innocent. In his place is, not one, but two, Zorro's who are bent on personal vendetta's and enlightened self-interest. It is actually Don Diego's daughter who helps some enslaved Mexicans near the end of the movie.
The transition from one Zorro to another takes the Fox out of the wealthy and privileged and makes him a commoner. The new Zorro is also a thief (in a wonderfully fun scene the young Zorro steals his horse, a very serious crime at the time). Having Zorro break so common a law seemed wrong to me. To have Zorro flaunt the breaking of laws meant to worsen the lives of the commoners is another thing entirely. But in this movie Zorro does not taunt authority. He plots against it, to be sure, but for his own reasons and not for the good of the people.
As this movie has two Zorros, there are now also two villains to be defeated (one each). The elder Zorro still has his old nemesis to contend with while the younger Zorro has made a personal enemy of Captain Love, a young Cavalry officer who seems to be in the wrong country. Both villains are vile and easy to hate. This make the personal vendettas a little more palatable as well as making the ending a lot more fun.
The other main problem with this film is that Zorro loses. Zorro never loses. but in this film Zorro loses big time. He loses his wife, his home, his daughter, his name and twenty years of his life. Granted, he briefly regains his daughter but gone is the hero who can laugh in the face of danger and triumph brilliantly.
The last thing I wanted to mention is that, probably due to the controversy over the new Jeffrey Irons film, Zorro is no longer married to his wife Lolita. Her name has been changed (how dare they) to the more common Esperanza. I can understand the concern of some but Don Diego won the heart of Lolita before the Roaring Twenties. As in the Nabakov novel, Lolita is a valid name before it was turned into an adjective. Next thing you know people are going to try and get Disney to change the name of Bambi because they think it is a girl's name (Bambi was the prince of the forest).
So, if you want to see The Mask of Zorro because, to you, it means an exciting swashbuckling movie, you will really enjoy this one. But if you want to see the movie to watch the continuing adventures of a hero that has entertained all generations since his debut almost eighty years ago, part of you will be disappointed in what has happened to the character.
13 ZORRO MEETS ZETA JONES
THE MASK OF ZORRO is a rousiing, energetic, exciting romantic swashbuckler movie, reminiscent of all those great Fairbanks and Flynn movies.
Antonio Banderas is a perfect Zorro, starting off rude and crude, ending up flamboyant and gallant. His injection of humor and the way he rolls his eyes is a definite good addition to his role.
The ever amazing Anthony Hopkins shines in his role as the first Zorro, whose life is ruined when his wife is killed and his daughter taken away from him by his cruel enemy. It's rare to see an action hero over the 50 year mark!
Catherine Zeta-Jones is breathtakingly beautiful and is wonderful in her role as Hopkins daughter, feisty, yet adolescent in her yearnings for the masked man.
Stuart Wilson is vile and irreprehensible as Don Metero, the head villain, and he plays it to the hilt.
Matt Leschler as the Captain is even worse, his dashing good looks hiding a psychotic imbalance.
The whole movie is superb; James Horner's overlooked Oscar score is beautiful, including the closing credits duet by Tina Arena and Marc Antony of "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You."
This is a fun, enjoyable and uplifting kind of movie. ENJOY!
14 The epitome of swashbuckling.
This movie is so much fun. It could not have been more perfectly cast. Anthony Hopkins as the elder Zorro has just the right amount of suaveness layered over a quiet but intense desire for revenge. Catherine Zeta Jones makes a great traditional "spunky heroine", with enough flashy moves of her own that she's never the damsel in distress. And Antonio Banderas, ahh. Seeing this movie reminds me of why I was a fan of his after so many of his other movies did their best to put me off him. If you'd only seen "Two Much" and "Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever", you'd wash your hands of him forever.
Which is perhaps what the entertainment industry has done. How else to explain how such a charming, charismatic actor gets so few good roles? Is it just his Spanish accent getting in the way? If so, what a pity. As the younger Zorro, he displays all his talents: He starts off as a bumbling bandit, so unkempt you can practically see the fleas on him. His transformation is a wonderful thing to behold. Step by step, he becomes the dashing swordsman, both in appearance and bearing. Every look of his eyes, every flick of his hand is just right. He has amazing acting instincts.
Another thing I like about this movie is the pacing. It takes its time setting up the story so you get a good background. By the time the bandits appear, you already care about them, because you've met them as children in a previous scene. At the same time though, there's never an instance where I felt the movie was moving too slowly, even with all the backstory.
15 PLEASE MAKE THE SEQUAL
the minute i first saw this movie i loved every scene of it and i haven't stopped watching it since then, i can hardly wait for the sequal to come in theaters
16 Great Adventure Movie
This sucessful rendition of Zorro`s story is a truly convincing and engaging blockbuster, showing the best qualities so rarely seen in action-adventure movies nowadays. Martin Campbell treats the material with care and respect, never dumbing it down into utterly childish stuff and creating an acessible, enrergetic entertainment that satisfies both kids and adults alike.
Antonio Banderas plays a credible Zorro, Catherine Zeta-Jones shines as his love interest and Anthony Hopkins is a menacing and adequate antagonist. The action sequences are well-done, being suspenseful and exciting enough and not too forced, overlong or tiresome. The script is simple but well-written, and given that the movie is convincing as a whole one can forgive some predictable moments.
So, this is a fun, solid picture, a good blockbuster that rises above most examples of the genre. Consistent entertainment.
17 When Glory, Tragedy, and Destiny Collide
"The Mask of Zorro" is a well-written, old-fashioned swashbuckler, filled with glorious scenes of Mexico, the passionate and romantic music of James Horner , and a marvelous tale about love, loss, redemption, and retribution.
Don Diego De La Vega, so aptly, and elegantly played by Anthony Hopkins, is Zorro, a nobleman who disguises himself in order to fight for justice on behalf of the peasants of California.
On the last day of the tyrannical Don Rafael Montero's tenure as Governor, Zorro appears before the wondering eyes of the two orphaned Murrieta Brothers, Joaquin and Alejandro, as well as a crowd of peasantry to fight one last battle on behalf of the wrongfully condemned before the Dons leave for Spain.
Little does the benevolent Don Diego realize that he is enjoying the last hours of a tranquil home life with his beautiful wife and infant daughter; for his identity is discovered, and along with his soldiers, Don Rafael ( played by a devious Stuart Wilson, who always makes a great onscreen villian), comes to arrest De La Vega. De La Vega's wife, Esperanza (played with joyous and affectionate solemnity by Julia Rosen) who was once courted by Don Rafael, is killed by a soldier while pleading for her husband. The De La Vega's crying infant, Elena, is kidnapped by Montero, the mansion looted and burned, and the unfortunate De La Vega condemned to wallow in the filth of a prison for 20 years.
The story picks up in 1841 with the Murrieta Brothers now wanted bandits working with fellow outlaw, Three-Fingered Jack, played by L.Q. Jones, who has a crafty turn of phrase every so often. A confrontation with the U.S. Cavalry, led by a stiff-haired Aryan Ken Doll of an officer, ironically named Captain Love (Matt Letscher), results in the death of Joaquin Murrieta and his brother's quest for vengeance.
When Montero returns to California and visits the prison to see if his old adversary is still alive, De La Vega realizes that the time for vegeance has come and escapes. The only thing that prevents his immediate revenge is the appearance of his long-lost daughter, played by a stunningly beautiful and spunky Catherine Zeta-Jones.
A chance reunion with Alejandro in a tavern gives De La Vega the means for settling old scores. As Alejandro, Antonio Banderas runs the gamut of emotions from haggard, belligerent, and grief-stricken to snide, playful, funny, diplomatic, and clever.Despite some faux pas, he soon proves himself worthy to inherit the mask of Zorro.
Disguised as Alejandro's valet, De La Vega has poignant moments of grace as he views the stolen painting of his wife, viewing his firey daughter dancing at a party and being the only one in the room who knows her true identity, her confiding her feelings about Don Alejandro to him without knowing his true identity, and her final acknowledgement of her past. We feel that Elena was meant to return to her birthplace to learn the truth and help remedy the injustices of her abductor. She lends herself beautifully to the task. The most sensuous scenes are of her alternately dancing with Don Alejandro and sparring with Zorro.
Audiences can cheer the finale where justice is served. Generally, I would recommend this intensely spectacular film because it is simply one of the most beautiful and intelligent morality tales to have ever blazed across the screen.
18 Behind the Times, Thank Goodness!
I'm a little behind the times. I've just seen this five year old film on DVD for the first time! This film also is behind the times and thank goodness it is. It brings back many good things about the great action-adventure films of Hollywood's Golden Age without trashing up the film just for sensationalism. This film has too much class to be sensational! There's no foul language or nudity, so I could enjoy it with my 12 year old son. He was enthralled. This movie has tons of action, romance and a large portion of emotion. In short, an escape from the usual action fare.
It is easy to get involved in the plot and characters. I would not have believed that Anthony Hopkins who plays Zorro would be so "right" for the role. If I was doing the casting I might have looked elsewhere. I guess that's why I'm not a casting director because Mr. Hopkins is absolutely perfect in this role. Sometimes looks are deceiving in real life too.
The stunt work is as spectacular as it could be in a Zorro film. The extra special features on the DVD are great.
If you are looking for an action adventure film with a little romance thrown in that the entire family will enjoy, this is your film and it is certainly worth owning. I rented it but now I'm buying it because we all want to see it again!
Special mention must be made of the excellent score, truly a work of art in itself. I would like to own the score on CD to play in my car.
This is without a doubt the best Zorro movie I've ever seen, or likely to see. I don't think this one can be topped. I give it 5 stars because it is one of the two best films I've seen in the past year.
19 An awesome movie
The Mask of Zorro is a superb action movie. It's a great tail to introduce Zorro to a younger generation. It's the first film to actually have a hispanic play the role. It's the first blockbuster hit for one of the most beautiful woman in the world.
The Mask of Zorro tells the tail of Diego. A man that was Zorro who is imprisoned for 20 years. He gets out of jail and finds a young man Alejandro who is also out for revenge. Diego trains him and teaches him out to fight. It's then that Alejandro and Diego go and get there revenge against the men who hurt them.
Antonio Banderas(Alejandro) is awesome. This is the best movie he has ever done. He plays Zorro to perfection. He puts the Spanish Rico Suave swagger on stage. You fall in love with the character. He does such a great job.
Anthony Hopkins(Diego)is awesome too. It's one of his best roles ever. I like seeing him play a sane good guy. Hopkins is one of the best actors of the last 25 years. Diego is a good character and I don't think anybody buy Hopkins could have pulled him off.
Catherine Zeta Jones is hot in this movie. She is such a beautiful woman. She's one of those flawless ladies that you could stare and admire all day. She plays Elana well and leaves every male jealous of Banderas. If your a guy you can watch the movie for her alone. I have to give personal thanks to the producer Steven Spielberg for discovering her and casting her.
I love the swordplay in the movie. It's great to see a film that doesn't rely on CGI and other special effects. All the swordplay is done well with great choreography. You could watch the movie for that alone.
I love the score that James Horner wrote for the film. He is one of the best in the business. The score accents the movie so well. I love the spansih trumpets. This score really got screwed at the Oscars. The love theme is a beautiful song as well.
I love this film. It's the best swashbuckling film since the 30's and 40's and could be argued as the best ever. Everybody should see this movie. It's a great tail of love and revenge that will leave you entertained and breathless. You'll love it. I've never heard of anybody that didn't.
20 Neat-o
This movie is super fantastic! I thought it was going to be a serious movie but it had a lot of wit in it. This movie has a spectacular cast. Anthony Hopkins is great in every role he plays. This just proves that he doesn't only have the persona as a cannibal. Antonio Banderas was the perfect men to play the part of the new Zorro. Not only was he smashing he portrayed a great hero. Catherin Zita Jones was just beautiful. Yeah, this is chock full of violence, love and humor. It is one of my favorites.
21 I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving this Movie!
Here's how big a fan of this movie I am; I bought the original DVD a few years ago, then for Christmas I got the Superbit Edition, only to find out the Special Edition has more extras...
so I'm now going to get that edition. But it's worth it, this movie is one of my favorites ever. I don't really need to get into the plot. All you need to know is it's Catherine Zeta-Jones in her break-through American film debut, and Antonio Banderas, as the first ever hispanic Zorro. The rest of the plot you should know. Thank God for Steven Spielberg, otherwise CZJ might still be stuck doing B movies, instead she's become one of the elite film actresses of our generation...Golden Globe nominations for her roles in Traffic and Chicago. Anyway, this movie was the highlight of my Freshman yr of HS...when I think of summer of '98, I think of 2 movies, Zorro and X-Files. And even though I was a huge X-Phile and quite obsessed, I have to say I liked and still like Zorro way better. I became the hugest CZJ fan and actually took up fencing in college, although I've yet to have my clothes slashed off by someone that looks as hot as Antonio Banderas. The chemistry between Catherine and Antonio is so great, I wanted him to ditch Melanie and hook up with Catherine in real life...cause anything that hot on screen (without an actual love scene mind you) has to translate in reality. But alas, he stayed married, and she got married, and had kids so...at least I have this movie, and hopefully a sequel.
Like I said, I just found out the Special Edition has way more extras, but before I heard that, I was actually really impressed with the superbit edition. There's an exclusive documentary which takes you into the process of making the movie. It's really interesting to see how the scenes were choreographed, and how hard the actors had to train for all of the stunts. Check out the deleted scenes...there's a great scene with CZJ on horseback that got cut, but showed she mastered horseriding after an initial fear of horses. But the coolest thing is the making of the swordfighting scenes. The scenes were actually choreographed like a dance scene, and each movement had to be precise to work out...so major kudos to the actors. James Horner (who had just come off of scoring Titanic) wanted something totally different, and decided to use background music of flamenco dancers feet tapping behind the swordplay scenes. Which works really well, since the scenes are actually very close to a dance. The tapping feet are also noted in the second sexiest scene of the movie...Elena & Don Alejandro's "spirited" dancing. The music video is also great. I fell in love with that song immediately, and stayed in the theater until it was over, then bought the soundtrack for that, as well as the beautiful score by James Horner. So go buy this DVD...or all 3 for that matter. There's bound to be another edition in a few years anyway...which I'd buy in a heatbeat as well.
22 madamx
it`s beautifull movie and i`m looking to find it.
it had good actor and editor.
23 Old-Style Hollywood Rollicking Adventure
Catherine Zeta Jones looks gorgeous and I can just see that creepy Michael Douglas watching this movie (and "Entrapment") hatching his evil plans. Of course she married the guy and turned into a complete "look-at-me-I'm-wonderful" priss, but that's another story. Antonio Banderas is good as Zorro but if only he didn't pout. I hate it when he pouts. Sir Anthony Hopkins, as the aging original Zorro, is.... as always... SUPERB! But where's Sgt. Garcia... It can't be a Zorro movie without Sgt. Garcia.
24 M for Murrieta
Antonio Bandaras, as Alejandro Murrieta, does very well in this adventure tale of the Mexican hero Zorro. Supporting roles from Anthony Hopkins, Don Diego de la Vega and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Elena Montero, are superb. A story of adventure, sacrifice, and revenge make a delightful movie that harkens back to swashbuckling Errol Flynn movies.
Bandaras as the protege to Zorro his mentor, Anthony Hopkins, does the best acting I have seen him do to date. He carries off being a dirty bandit/rogue/aristocrat/hero very well. Great support from Stuart Wilson as the evil Don Rafael Montero and Matt Letscher as Captain Harrison Love his brutal henchman. A good deal of comedy keeps the story from being to dark. This is one the whole family will sit down to watch. The superbit picture is extremely sharp and the sound is first class. The additional disc contains many extras. This is a great addition to any video library.
25 Zorro RULES!!!
Yesterday i first saw this fabulous movie. And i think it's great!!The whole idea of one man - Zorro - who is a hero not because of some weird superpower, but because of his fighting scills, and of his charm, is absolutely NOT what you see in Hulks, Spidermans, and all those movies. I don't want to write a whole poem about it, but Zorro is the BEST!!!
26 Fairbanks Would Approve
Anthony Hopkins is the real Zorro and Antonio Banderas is the young bandit he grooms to take his place and to fight against the Don responsible for the death of his wife and the taking of his daughter. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Hopkin's daughter who has been raised as the Don's child.
The three stars are all excellent, bringing both their dramatic capacities and a comic touch to each character. The story is engaging, with amusing dialogue and interplay between the leads. The action is well staged and punches up the story. All in all, it's great entertainment and a well made film. I suspect Douglas Fairbanks and Tyrone Power would have approved!
27 Loved It
I really enjpyed this movie! It wasnt a chick flick but it had enough romance to keep us women interested. It was a great action packed movie with tons of great DVD extras
28 Antonio Banderas is really cool!
Indiana Jones meets the Three Musketeers meets Robin Hood. This movie was wonderful. Anthony Hopkins did a wonderful job as the original Zorro. At the beginning of the movie, arch nemesis takes all and Zorro is left with nothing. After escaping prison years later, he plans his revenge.
Enter Antonio Banderas.
Old Zorro trains Antonio's character into the all new and all hot Zorro. Planning to use him as a tool in revenge, he discovers that Antonio/Zorro also has a revenge in mind. He wants to kill the man who 'keeled' his brother.
In another plot twist, Anthony/Zorro's daughter has been raised as the daughter of his mortal enemy. And she's hot. Of course, she and Antonio/Zorro must meet. Every Robin Hood needs his Maid Marrian.
This movie is fun, funny, and full of some really cool sword fighting scenes. There is this really gross part where you see someone's head and hands in some jars, but it's over quickly.
I would totally recommend this movie to anyone who likes action/adventure with a little romance.
29 Great Movie.
Expertly crafted action entertainment. Anthony Hopkins plays the aged California folk hero who trains Antonio Banderas to take up the sword against corrupt Spanish officials. Fantastic fencing, spectacular stunts, a good dose of comedy, and even some moving acting make this the best filmed incarnation yet of the Mexican masked man. So also get this film today!

This movie is a great movie. It has Action,Drama, and Love. This is a movie that is a high crowd pleaser. Most people want a little bit of everything in a movie and this movie has it all. If you grew up with the Disney Series of Zorro then hold on to your pants because your in for a real treat. This movie features Anthony Hopkins your Haniball Lecter guy and Antonio Bandras who is a very unique actor. So if you happen to be at your movie store and your in the action/western section then try out this film. I bet you will love it so much that you will have no other choice than to buy it. THE MASK OF ZORRO!!!!! THE LEGEND WILL GO ON FOREVER!!!!!!1
32 Mask of Zorro (Superbit)
I think this film is among my best purchases...Anthony Hopkins is fantastic, and Antonio Banderas isn't half bad either. The music is phenomenal, the camera work / picture quality is nearly perfect, and the story exceeds my expectations for an action/adventure movie.
33 Rousing swashbuckling tale
This is not your Father's Zorro, and Antonio Banderas does a fine job as the masked avenger (and according to the Amazon.com trivia section, the first Hispanic to play this role). Banderas plays the second generation people's hero in Southern California, just prior to Spain's ceding of the land to Mexico.
Anthony Hopkins is a great second (who is actually the first) Zorro, a/k/a Don Diego de la Vega, a Mexican land baron and freedom fighter. After escaping decades later from prison, Hopkins escapes from prison to seek revenge on the no-good governor (well played by a smarmy Stuart Wilson) the man who killed his wife and stole his daughter.
Bandaras, a low-life bandito becomes urbane and a proficient warrior at the teaching of Hopkins, and then becomes transformed by a positively bewitching Catherine Zeta-Jones. Their interplay gives the film its romantic, and often sensual edge.
Lots of swordplay and general excitement, as we recall from Douglas Fairbanks and Disney's Guy Williams. The movie moves quickly (but bogs down for awhile 2/3 of the way through. Happily, it picks up the pace through the end.
Nice scenery. When we see the sign of the return of Zorro, via a blazing Z cut into a hillside , it is positively thrilling. A stirring script which fits the film well. More than enough humor (such as the scene in the confessional, or one of several chased of Zorro by the troops) for the purpose of lessening the tension which is well added by a malevolent Matt Letscher.
As one says, it is a grand throwback. As another said: That's entertainment!
34 This is Great Movie.......
All the amazon reviewers have done a fastastic job covering the plot of this film it is hard to find anything new and different to add. But,this is a film that makes you want to call everyone you know and tell them to run out and rent it - immediately. And thus, makes me want to say something to encourage any hold-outs to see this movie - immediately! Honestly, it sat on my shelf for awhile before I viewed it because well..., its 'Zorro', a comicbook hero for goodness sake. Oh the pleasure I was keeping from myself in that delay!
Anthony Hopkins is great, as ever. As good as he has ever been in any film. Antonio Banderas has to be one of the most talented, all-around proficient, gorgeous and sexy, and easily the 'most-watchable' Hollywood actors working today. He does it all and does it unbelievably well. Catherine Zeta Jones is beautiful, intelligent, believable, and a joy to watch. Any questions one may have about the strength and weight of this film should be dispelled by the caliber of the cast.
The beauty of the locale, the costumes, the settings, the music, the colors and sound, all make it such a pleasure to view you feel almost overwhelmed by its granduer. The humor is subtle and delicious, appears in all the right places, and never, never insults your intelligence. Watching it, even alone, you will find yourself laughing with just totally sublime enjoyment. The sword-fighting scenes, such a favorite genre from my childhood, are beautifully choreographed and dazzling in their detail, the movement, the sound, the grace, all these elements come together with such excitement, they are a wonderful sight to behold. The Mask Of Zorro was a long time in the making and it shows in the detail and obvious love for the project that prevailed and transferred to the screen.
A word about which edition to select; the sound on the Special Edition DVD is just spectacular! So good I could not even consider suggesting one giving up all the interesting special features to purchase the 'Super Bit' Edition.
The commentaries and featurettes on the 'Special Edition' add such additional pleasure to your original enjoyment of the film itself. To learn the details of how the sword-fighting scenes were filmed, who did what and who was good at it, to know how the sets were built and the costumes designed, all the information about the local extras fill you with so much knowledge about the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of this film, it makes you value the spectacle of the film all the more. The next time you watch it will be even more enjoyable. And you will want to view it more than once, after you get it back from lending it to everyone you know of course.
This is an intelligent, but truly fun, movie that will definitely add a few hours of immense pleasure to your life. If I were selling this DVD it would come with a money-back guarantee. You WILL enjoy it. The only reason to return - is to buy a copy for your best friend. Share the glee. That was the only reason to write this review, hoping that one more very satisfied viewer could convince one more hold-out to 'indulge yourself' in this beautiful flick. It is Z-best!!!
35 High Quality DVD, Swashbuckling Fun....HALF the Price!
This review refers to the Columbia TriStar DVD Dec 2000 release of "The Mask of Zorro"......
You're a big fan of this Zorro film but don't want to shell out big bucks? This DVD is for you. Columbia/TriStar's transfer to DVD is one of the best I've seen. There isn't one detail about it that's inferior. The picture is presented in beautiful anamorphic widescreen(2.35:1), and shows off the incredible cinematography of the Mexico/California regions. The colors are outstanding. They jump out at you and take your breath away. The sound including the wonderful score, the dialouge and all the swashbuckling action is outstanding in the Dolby Dgigtal 5.1(THX) surround. You can also set it up for 2.0 stereo if you choose. You won't find a ton a special features, but there is "making of" featurette, with some commentary by cast and crew, that is entertaining and informative. For those who would prefer more on the side of extras and don't mind paying more, there is a "special edition" release that has lots of goodies including a video, and lots of commentary(see buying info). There is also a "super-bit" version, also more expensive if you choose.(Don't look for extras there).
The movie is packed with action, adventure, romance, and comedy and drama. It will appeal to you if you love westerns, history, or swashbucklers. The story opens with Zorro(Anthony Hopkins)bounding in to help save the Mexican people from the ruthless Don Rafeal Montero(Stuart Wilson). They have been under Spanish rule and are now about to be free. Montero and Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro have been sworn enemies for years. Montero follows De La Vega back to his home, finds that he is Zorro, a swordfight ensues, Diego's wife is murdered, his baby girl stolen and he is imprisoned.Montero flees back to Spain and raises the child as his own.
Twenty years later........Diego learning of Montero's return, see's a chance to reclaim his daughter, Elena(the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones) and breaks out of prison. He now trains a younger and stronger man, Alejandro Murietta(Antonio Banderas), to take his place and to help save the people once again from the ruthless Montero.Lots of adventure abounds as they set out to accomplish these feats, and of course lots of romantic adventure as well between Alejandro and Elena. You never knew sword fighting was so much fun and so sexy until you see these two in a duel!
Hopkins is exquiste as the older Zorro, Banderas charming, funny, and handsome as ever, and Zeta-Jones in one of her earliest roles really shines through. Other notables to watch for are L.Q. Jones as "Three-Fingered Jack", and Pedro Armendariz Jr as Don Pedro. Cinematography by Phil Meheux(The Saint/Goldeneye)is outstanding, Musical score by James Horner brillant as always in giving the perfect feeling to the story, and wonderful direction by Martin Campbell(Vertical Limit/Goldeneye).
Watch for "The Sign of the Z"........Laurie
36 Was This Good Or What?!
THe Mask of Zorro was cool and funny. i liked all the characters, especially Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. THis is only the second movie I've seen her in besides Entrapment (which was also good) but I really like her. She did great. Antonio Banderas has some funny Lines:
"Look at me. I look like a butterfly. This is the most stupid thing I have ever done."
ANthony Hopkins says "I doubt that."
I'm a horse lover, so Tornado and Alejandro's horse really added to the movie. Alejandro's horse's sense of humor was almost as good as the actors'. I've lost track of all the times I've seen it, but I enjoy it every time. No wonder everyone likes it.
37 Great fun for the family!
This movie harkens back to the golden age of hollywood in the '30s with its bold stunts and cinematography. This version does true credit to the entire DVD medium experience. So gather everyone in the family around, grab you bowls of popcorn and soda and just sit back and enjoy!
38 Swashbuckling Fun
This Zorro is not the Disney version that was popular on TV many years ago, but a fresh look at the legend, with Anthony Hopkins beginning to live the legend, and followed by Antonio Banderas. Then there is Catherine Zeta Jones, the beauty (daughter of Hopkins) and Banderas falls in love with her, not knowing the background of her father who is in prison. And so it goes...a wonderful film with action, suspense, retribution with good versus evil, and a wonderful love story to boot. Recommended.
39 A must see!
Even if you're not a Zorro fan, you'll enjoy this. Very entertaining. Antonio Banderas makes a great Zorro. I didn't like Antony Hopkins that much (normally, I'm a fan), but he was not the main character so that's OK.
40 The Best Argument For A Sword-Fighting Revival There Is
A cracking two-hours of pure entertainment, this is a film worthy of watching again and again. If you were really hunting for criticisms, you might argue that it takes rather a long time for the real showdown between both Zorros and their respective arch-nemises to get going, but when it does it's well worth the wait, and in the interval there's plenty of delightfully funny and witty scenes between master and apprentice ... not to mention Banderas and Zeta-Jones providing enough on-screen electricity to light up Blackpool Illuminations. In short, this is an excellent and splendidly written film, cleverly adapted to California's history, with wonderful action sequences that prove you don't need to chop your enemies to pieces with your bare hands to provide excitement. Top performances from the cast all round - Hopkins typically brilliant, Zeta-Jones finally making her mark on the big time and Stuart Wilson providing a convicing but somehow pitiable bad guy, but two performances in particular deserve mentioning. Banderas' standard can be uneven, but he's first-rate here, gradually turning from a drunken bandit to a skillful swordsman, gentleman and champion of the people and getting the girl in the process. And number two: Matt Letscher's incredible turn as the thoroughly nasty, but cunning and sword-toting Captain Love. I think he did a cracking job and definitely deserves a special mention. Bring on the sequel!!
41 Good rousing fun. This film packs quite a punch! Enjoy!
Where to begin? To me this film delivers on many levels and is one of the best film versions of Zorro in the history of the character, if not THE best. For one the story is a little bit different than most. Instead of trying to restore his father to a political office, Zorro becomes a champion of the people, fighting to save the people of California from the schemes of a political tyrant. Personal revenge for a wrong committed is involved also, as well as one man's quest for a "new life".
I have to touch on some things here. The photography here is brilliant. Done completely in Mexico the landscape is both lush and beautiful, vast and dramatic. At the same time it can be bleak and oppresive and appropriately gloomy. A great job was done. Also, James Horneer (of BraveHeart and Titanic fame) steps to the plate to give us a musical score that is full of tension, tenderness, and good rousing drama, adventure and fun. The music for the second dance number between Alejandro and Elena is an exquisite piece of music just by itself.
The three leads, Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, and Catherine Zeta Jones absolutely shine here. The chemistry between Banderas and Zeta-Jones can be felt easily, as can that between Banderas and Hopkins in their student/master relationship. I love the fact that through Don Diego and his training, the young Murietta is given a new purpose in life and is offered a chance to become a "new man". There is a real sense of accomplishment, excitement, and fun as the two get ready to tempt their fates at the climax of the film and put wrong things right.
The script here is excellent, the dialogue sparkling with tension and wry humor (ie: Montero's discovery of Zorro's true identity and the ensuing fracas and mayhem, the confession booth sequence in the middle, and the contfrontation between Diego and Montero at the Montero hacienda late in the film.) There are funny moments a-plenty and also ones that are quite touching as well. Elena's realization of her heritage and reunion with Diego was brilliantly done and had everone in the theater going "Awww" when I saw this for the first time in a local cinema complex. The sword-fight between Alejandro and Elena struck the perfect balance between tension, action, and humor.
In short this is a very grand and stylish film that brings back the spirit of the old swashbuckling adventure classics. It is a very touching and funny film at times. It is vastly entertaining and good fun for the whole family. I also love the fact that it had a very touching love story in it without gratuitous nudity, sex, or violence. Also to my memory there is not much bad language in this film, which makes for a QUITE REFRESHING CHANGE. The swordfights are very well done, but not too bloody. If you like good, rousing, fun films that are dramatic and tender at times too, you can't go wrong with this one. Kick back and enjoy it Peace, and God bless you.
42 Lives the legend
Or perhaps I should say, lives up to the legend. This version of Zorro is excellent, and besides the 50's TV series, is the best adaptation I've ever seen. It's a surprise considering so many "blockbuster" films are utterly disappointing. But not this one.
"Mask of Zorro" sparkles. It tingles with a furious energy. This is entertainment at it's best, and don't see that as a bad thing. I think the last thing any of us would want is an overly "deep" or ponderous Zorro. On the contrary, this film flows like a tango and never stops. It's colorful, passionate, and unflinchingly displays Old California beautifully (and I must say, as a transplanted Californian, it's wonderful to see it so vibrantly and truthfully captured on screen, even if it's the 1800s, it still hasn't changed). But true to style, even since the first Tyrone Powers flick and the Guy Williams series, this film doesn't hesitate with throwing military and social injustice in your face and bombarding you with squeamishly violent or gruesome screen anecdotes. They like you to get the idea that Zorro needs to work very hard to save all those violently mistreated, maltreated, beaten down people (and what a makeup job they did on those extras). And as usual there's a power hungry tyrant (as was the norm politically back then all over North America), who is willing to make up an elaborate plot and step on as many people as necessary to get his way. Add a pretty lady, and Anthony Hopkins as the real Diego de la Vega which works beautifully in getting the audience to accept Banderas as a new Zorro. We've never seen a mature and graying Zorro before, played by Hopkins, so it's very easy to accept the apprentice, played by wonderfully by Banderas who charismatically does his duty in the role. Kudos to the great costuming, cinematography, choreography, and that fantastic score.
Bottom line, if you see this movie, you'll probably really want to take fencing and salsa lessons when you're through with it.
43 Entertaining and fun to watch.
This is worth buying just for the sword fight between the leading man and leading lady.
The interplay between the new Zorro and his mentor is also very good. Anthony Hopkins is terrific as usual.
The grandiose finale is okay, but the real enjoyment comes from the quieter moments of the film.
44 A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY COLLECTION
When testing a system, this is one to carry along. When I got my home theater I put this DVD in first. The sound is incredible and that was the first time I felt like I was in the movie theater. Awesome story, beautiful heroine, evil villain, and great sword fighting make this one of the best DVDs available. Some scenes might be a bit much for little kids (like a human head in a big jar) but teenagers and parents will enjoy this together. Would be 5 stars if it was anamorphic, but now that the special edition is out, I'll have to upgrade. I've learned my lesson and only buy special editions now, or at least movies with anamorphic transfers.
45 Spectecular Action and Stunts, and Funny At Times
Awesome! This movie is one of the best action/stunt movies I've seen. With lots of plots and turns and twists and still very moving. Catherine Zeta-Jones gives a dazzling performance as daughter of the governor. Trust me, you won't regret watching this one.
46 Beautiful Zorro masterpiece
Up until a few minutes ago, I only thought about the action in this film, but after thinking about it and listening to the closing song, I have changed my opinion. Even the most cruel of people will find this film touching, a heart-touching and heart-breaking story of love, courage, and revenge. Love and revenge are explored here more than any other Zorro story, and while the Tyrone Power version is the best Zorro film, this film is the one that will touch your heart most.
Many years after Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) became Zorro, the masked defender of freedom and justice in Los Angeles, he has become the defender of all of California, battling against the evil govenor, Montero (Stuart Wilson). Zorro makes his final fight at Montero's hacienda, aided by two young orphans. Montero learns of Diego's secret life as Zorro, and in the fray, Diego's wife is killed. Arrested for life, Diego sees his hacienda burned and learns that Montero has stolen his little child, Elena de la Vega. Beaten, having lost everything he loved, Diego swears that he will claim his revenge.
After twenty years, California becomes a colony of Mexico. The young orphans who aided Zorro, the Murieta brothers, work with Three-Fingered Jack to attack the still cruel military. Captain Harrison Love (Matt Letscher) kills the elder brother, taking away from Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas) everything that he ever loved. Meanwhile, Diego has escaped prison, but cannot kill Montero. His daughter, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) believe Montero to be her father. Alejandro meets Diego, who has not forgotten his aid. He offers to train Alejandro to trade revenge for a sense of justice, to become Zorro. He makes plans to save California with the young bandit, who agrees excitedly. However, at the same time, both men make plans to take revenge on their sworn enemies. Alejandro becomes smitten with Elena, who moves closer to her truth.
This film has two pieces of revenge: robbing one's child and bringing her up as your own, and killing one man's beloved sibling. This film is excellent in any sense, and is sure to be a classic twenty years from now, right up their with Tyrone Power's version. This film has wonderful quotes.
Elena(To Alejandro): I dishonered my father (Montero).
Alejandro: That is not so bad. Maybe your father deserved it.
Diego (To Montero): Rafael! You'll never be rid of me!
Montero (To Love): What I'm saying, captian, is that I think that my horse could run this army better than you!
Montero: Who are you?
Diego: I warned you long ago Rafael...you will never be rid of me.
Montero: De la Vega.
47 The Mask Of Zorro!
Martin Campbell's lively, high-spirited swashbuckling adventure is one of the best sword-swinging action films ever! Antonio Banderas is the title character, swinging swords and one-liners to great effect and carving Zs everywhere!
The film starts with Anthony Hopkins as the legendary yet ageing hero Zorro/Don Diego de la Vega, who is captured by his nemesis Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), who kills his wife Esperanza de la Vega and takes away his daughter. Several years later, Diego meets Alejandro Murrieta (Banderas) and Don Diego trains Alejamdro to become to the new Zorro.
The film's exuberance makes for an exciting action adventure with some great humour and witty lines. Hopkins is brilliant (as usual) as Zorro, and Banderas is perfect for the part of the new Zorro. Catherine Zeta- Jones is suitably sexy as Elena Montero, Don Diego's daughter. The action, stunts, heroics and score are all done wonderfully, and the added humour is really great. Action at it's best.
48 Pointy end goes into the bad guy
The Mask of Zorro is a great movie! It has Antonio Banderas, Caterine Zeta Jones and Athony Hopkins!
Zorro (Hopkins) is an aging freedom fighter in Mexico. He is captured by his arch enemy, and has his daughter stolen from him (boo!)
Years later, Zorro escapes from the prision and seeks revenge. He meets up with a common thief (Banderas)and teaches him to be the new Zorro! (This might take some time)
49 Action packed for all boys
My son got this movie a few years ago. He is now turning 7 and it is still his favorite movie! It doesn't have graphic violence but it does have all the physical action that litte boys love. I can't tell you how many times I have heard "I'd like to give you the honor of being my horse" from my son and his Dad. However, he maybe a little too prepared for teenager-hood as he has practiced "the Zorro kiss" many times over! We even had to buy the CD so he could have the music. Absolutely a must have for video collections.
50 ...They make the sign of the Z...
This film is the most recent Zorro film. It stars the young Hispanic Antonio Banderas and the intelligent actor Anthony Hopkins. THis may be the first time that a true Hispanic has played Zorro in an American film.
In 1820, Spain has lost California to Mexico. But Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) the Spanish govenor, is determined to kill his nemisis Zorro. The fox again foils Montero's plans with the help of two young orphans, one of whom he gives a medallion. Somehow, Montero learns that Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) is Zorro. Diego's wife is murdered by Montero's men, his hacienda burned, Montero robs him of his child, and Diego is sent to prison. Defeated but determined never to surrender, the enraged fox promises the govenor that he will never be rid of him.
Twenty years later, Santa Anna has become worse than Montero, and people vanish without a trace. The orphan who helped Zorro, Alejandro Mureita (Banderas) and his brother are caught by Montero's man Capitan Love (Matthew Letcher) who beheads Alejandro's brother. Meanwhile, Deigo escapes and sees that Montero has raised his stolen child Elena (Catherine Zeta Jones). Diego sees Alejandro. The two men form an alliance. Diego trains Alejandro in the art of the sword, the whip, riding a horse, and athletic ability. Alejandro tries an exlpoit as Zorro but is rejected by Diego. In the end, however, the new fox earns his mask. Diego now seeks revenge on his nemisis, Montero, while the new Zorro tries to free the people.
This film extends Zorro's legacy. However, in the future I am sure we will see more films with Zorro being Diego. One line with this film seems to hold more emotion than the rest.
DIEGO: "Rafael! You'll never be rid of me! Never!"
51 One of the best of it's type from hollywood in years
This was a wonderful movie of its type, a nice lighthearted adventure. Not surprisingly, the best acted sceans are those that center around Mr. Hopkins. While it is an axiom that hollywood places looks above talent, the leads also turned in solid permormances. If I were to have any question on the casting it would be in regards to Ms Zeta-Jones who, while as stunning a woman as has ever graced the earth, is clearly of english lineage. Ever heard of Salma Hayec guys? I belive Ms Zeta-Jones does an excellent job, I just think it would have been better to have used someone of roughly similar talents, equal in beauty, who actually was latin. (With respect to Ms Zeta-Jones, Hopkins talent makes any concern as to his lineage moot.)
The character deveolpment is well done. The bitter Diego, who want Alejandro to put his job over revenge but does not to so himself, alejandro who lusts for revenge but learns to take his time to acheive it as part of what is right, even Rafeal's desire/love for Diego's wife seems to be true as opposed to the brute lust that it could have been protrayed as.
Like all movies of its type it does fall prey to the silly idea of one person holding off a dozen hiw sword agaianst thieir swords and guns but at least the sword play is well done with the combatents attempting to stike each other as oppose to hitting their swords together ( especially since these are weapons that employ primarily the point rather than the edge so hacking and blacking Conan style would not be realistic.)
The interplay between the vaious actors is very good and the emotions are well portrayed, the sorrow or the brother, the wistfullness for the wife, etc. The best such part is probably the chat between Diego and Elena in the stable. The film does do a nice job at displaying chaacter depth through their breif dialogs about their lives(Elena riding across the plains of Andelusia, etc) and one can connect with the emotions they feel. The only weakness in this regard is near the end with a Eleana being unconflicted about the eventual fate of her foster father.
The only other real issue that come to mind is that of the grand ethical theme. There is never any indication as to why it would be worse for the average peasant to be ruled by the Dons in the independent republic of california as opposed to being ruled by Santa Anna. The evil we are shown is an evil of means rather than an evil of ends. I do not know enough about the hisory of that region to comment on this, but it really didn't get my heart going in terms of being a good vs evil issue. Perhaps it would have simply been better to have a despot busy on the fron with a war than haning local despots hanging over one's head.
The last point is, however, irrelevant. This is not a movie for analysis, it is to sit and enjoy. In that regard is scores very well indeed.
52 Very Entertaining
I don't know, but maybe some viewers were watching this movie upside down or maybe the "Gayblade". But this movie was a real piece of work and the parts were set up just right. With some movies you can't expect action from the start. This was set up very well and antonio Banderas turned in a splendid performance as the new Zorro and it ended well with the classic style of the good guys winning and getting the girl. Except the movie for what it is, Entertaining. GET THIS ONE.
53 One of my Top Ten of 1998
"The Mask of Zorro" turned out to be the best surprises of 1998. It is much better than I expected it to be and vastly superior to the year's only other mega-budget movie worth mentioning, the happily psychotic "Armageddon".
The only fault worth mentioning is that it takes awhile to get into gear. This may be due to the tendency of today's features to run longer. Once it's up and running, it never slows down.
Anthony Hopkins play Diego, who is secretly Zorro. Now with a young wife and a child, he is ready to throw in the mask. Due to a cruel twist of fate, his retirement does not occur the way he planned.
Twenty years later, young Alejandro [Anthony Banderas], assisted by Diego, becomes a new Zorro. The place is California as was in the early 1800s, when it went from Spanish to Mexican rule. The villains, superbly played by Stuart Wilson and Matthew Letscher, are Don Rafael and his henchman Captain Harrison. These two are beyond bad to the bone. You will love hating them. They have come to California to stir up some terrible trouble. They are accompanied by Rafael's beautiful daughter Elena [Catherine Zeta-Jones]. This is all I will tell you about the story, other than that its got an excellent plot.
"The Mark of Zorro" is in a class with the great swashbuckling epics of the past, yet it is also fresh. One can imagine Errol Flynn playing the young Zorro, but the tone is closer to the standards set by the "Star Wars" trilogy. It harkens back to older action-adventure classics for several reasons. The plot and the dialog do not require us to think, while assuming we are reasonably intelligent. The attention to set design and to costumes is impeccable. Many of the scenes are filled with people rather than special effects. There appears to be more reliance on trick photography than on computer generated images.
Best of all, the interaction between the actors is electric. Sparks fly between Hopkins and Banderas, Hopkins and Wilson and Banderas and Letscher. This palls besides the white heat generated in the scenes involving Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. She is one of the most beautiful women to grace the screen in ages. She also possesses great talent. Banderas has recovered from the slump he fell into because of several poor films. Their dance together and their sword fight are two of the most passionate scenes ever recorded on film. Like much of the film, a comic tone underscores these scenes. This was a device often successfully used by Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s.
The movie's climax has so much going on that it might wear some viewers out. The plot's three main elements come together in a big bang. I thought it was brilliant.
The photography is first rate throughout. The music is by James Horner. It is rousing but unoriginal. In fact, one major theme was first used by him in 1983s "Brainstorm". "The Mask of Zorro" was his 105th film score. I suppose anyone would run out of ideas at that point.
I highly recommend this movie. It takes us to a magical place we seem to have fond memories of. I call that place The Land of Never Was. Enjoy!
54 dissapointed
When I heard about this movie I was excited because I loved Zorro. But when I saw this I thought what the hell were they thinking. Zorro needs a smile of that of a fox. very misleading. The basis of the movie wasn't even good. You need something where you can really think is he really zorro or does he have a twin. I didn't get that from this. I never thought I would not like a zorro movie but when I saw this I hated it right from the start. The only other movie I hated of a zorro type was the gay blade I mean that was the stupidest movie..So my final word on this movie is that I hated it and I don't reccomend it!
55 I love Zorro's DVD!!
The Mask of Zorro is one of my all time favorites movies! I really enjoy the DVD, It was the first DVD I bought after my parents bought a DVD player.
....
56 EXCELLENT!!!
This film is a must-see for anyone who can possibly look at a screen!! The casting is excellent - Elena couldn't be played by anyone sexier than Catherine Zeta Jones, Diego de la Vega couldn't be played by anyone with half as much attitude as Anthony Hopkins, and Alejandro/Zorro couldn't be played by anyone without Antonio Banderas' great Spanish accent and moves.
Some of the excellent scenes were the dancing scene (boy, can Zeta Jones and Banderas dance!) at the party, the mysterious confession scene, the sword fight between Elena and Zorro, and the scene where Diego de la Vega speaks with Elena in the stable.
MUST-SEE FILM!!!
57 The Mask of Zorro -- 9 stars!
One of the best movies around. The best! Banderas, Zeta-Jones, and Hopkins work wonderfully together. In the watching of this film, it is easy to see why these actors were chosen for their roles.
In this version of "Zorro" you get a bit more of the back-story, in to what makes Zorro who he is today. Scenery and costumes for the film are awe inspiring. Good representation of a story that is always retold.
"The Mask of Zorro," reminds me a lot of another film with its romance, action, and drama. That movie is "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves."
58 Zorro Unmasked at Last
Anyone who knows me more than acknowledges my opinion of "The Mask of Zorro" -- as a great swashbuckler that Errol Flynn would be more than proud of. I long-awaited the Collector's Edition and was thrilled when it was finally released -- two disks jam-packed full of goodies. Formerly only released in the UK, USA citizens will at last be able to view all the deleted scenes, trailers, documentaries, interviews, featurettes, music videos, production information, widescreen and full screen formats, commentaries, advertising materials, publicity galleries, and costume information that make up one of the most smashing summer hits of the nineties.Ę
I preordered my copy with Amazon and was very pleased with the result. The first disc includes most of the "goodies," and the second has only the standard screen adaptation and commentary. I'll give you the let-down, but won't spoil anything since I know any true fan will want this masterpiece of packaging.
Deleted Scenes -- There are apparently only two finished deleted scenes, although there appears to be another one imbedded into the "Zorro Unmasked" feature. One is "The Thief," and took place directly after Alejandro first saw Tornado in the square. He lifts a wallet off a Spanish Don and Diego calls him a thief.
The second is the alternate ending, which originally took place directly after Diego's death, in which Alejandro and Elena (with the peasants) meet Santa Anna on his way to the mine. I won't give you any clues as to what happens, but Elena and Alejandro kiss as the film fades out.
The third, unfinished and embedded into the featurette, is apparently a competition between Elena and Captain Love. They are showing off their swordsmanship and fencing skills in sort of a medieval joust. I wish they'd completed this scene and left it in, since I love the ending line by Elena to her father.ĘThe scenes are widescreen and unfinished, meaning the quality is not half as good as it would be in a completed film. Still, they are great fun!
Theatrical Trailers -- There are two, one on the original disk and the second, a longer "preview" no doubt shown in theaters. Additionally there are 15-30 second TV spots, about a dozen in all, which each focus on a different element... "He will go from ZERO to Zorro!" "This summer, their fates will collide!" etc. Initially, they're a lot of fun.
"Zorro Unmasked" Documentary -- Excellent featurette, about an hour in length, with in-depth interviews, behind-the-scenes information, and moviemaking tips. We meet the sword master, the director, producer, costume designer, and many more of the people who worked in, around, and on screen, including the three stars.
Music Video -- Very nicely done, the music video features cuts from the film to the performers and to a little romance of its own being carried on by a bandito and his senorita, who eventually get together in the end.
The rest is excellent... the director does a beautiful job on his commentary, the production and costume information are very informative, and the publicity galleries are great. They have an excellent into-screen to the menu. All in all, it's worth the twenty bucks... and more.
59 One of the best films to come along in a long time!!!
This is how movies should be made, but unfortunately many are not, It is clear that Steven Spielberg oversaw the film from start to finish, (Thank God) When I first saw it I didn't expect much, but I have to say I was impressed, Antonio Banderas is perfect as Zorro, as is Anthony Hopkins as the aging Zorro & master trainer to Banderas' new one (almost like Luke & Yoda). The film begins with Montero getting ready to leave old California, but before he leaves he wants to make an example of Zorro(Hopkins)as usual he shows up to foil Montero's plan, & Montero leaves, so we assume, as Hopkins goes about his daily routine he is confronted by Montero who suspects he is Zorro & proves it, they fight & Hopkins' wife is killed as a result, he is then imprisoned & his child taken by Montero, the film then proceeds 20 years later where we see Banderas & his brother & a freind of theirs stealing to survive, they are contfronted by Montero's stooge & his brother is beheaded as he makes a quick escape, we then see Montero returning to see if Hopkins is still alive in prison, when he thinks he has died he begins new plans for old California, but Hopkins is very much alive & escapes to later get revenge, him & Banderas soon cross paths, both want revenge & set out to get it, Catherine Zeta-Jones really shines here as Hopkins now-grown child, & the chemistry between her & Banderas is a sight to see, everyone is cast perfectly, & Stuart Wilson gives a very believeable performance as Montero, (spoiler) a wonderful film that is rare in today's Hollywood movies & should not be missed!!! Highy Recommended!!!!!!
60 very impressed
a great film set in early california days. it has great acting, a great story, and some fine action. i recommend this to everyone.
61 Not! Korean Subtitle~~!!
This Movie Not~! Korean Subtitle...
But Sound is Very Very Good~!
62 How can you ever get enough of it?!
There are amazing thrillers of movies that stand out far and above other movies; and then there are movies that aren't the best; but some how they just are...You think back on it and you just adore the film! For me, Mask of Zorro is one of those films! There's just something so...so charismatic in it. In the fun of all the sword play. In the love of each character for each other. In the need for revenge that drives each man. And most of all the Hollywood terror in that mark of the "Z". No it will never be epic like Matrix or Braveheart if you ask me; but I would say it will always be a classic in my book!
As a foot note! The editorial review says it has too much of everything!! I ask you?! How can you get too much sword play? Or spectacular stunts? Or just plain high adventure drama! I guess my only real complaint with the movie was they didn't have enough! Bring it on! This is not a modern day deep thinking Matrix type, which is good; but don't you just want to have fun sometimes?! If you ask me this is the best return to the just pure pleasure of the good old fashioned swashbucklers Hollywood used to know how to make! I love it with all Five Stars!
63 The Mask of Zorro
In "The Mast of Zorro", Anthony Hopkins plays Don Diego de la Vega, a freedom fighter in California by the name of Zorro. But the day Spain concedes California to Santa Anna, de la Vega is captured and put into prison. Twenty years later, he escapes and finds that his enemy, Don Rafael (Stuart Wilson) has come back to California. De la Vega also finds that Don Rafael had taken his own daughter, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), as his own. De la Vega, with the help of a young man, Alejandro (Antonio Banderas) are determined to try to stop Don Rafael from his evil plans in taking over California.
The movie is fantastic! One, it has actors Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Who wouldn't love them? Two, the story line is good. It's very understandable and there doesn't seem to be any gaps in the story. Three, the action is just amazing! There's fencing with a little Bruce Lee touch in it. Four, there are no bad scenes or any foul language in it! It's not the kind of movie you'd watch with younger kids but still, it's very good!
A definite five star movie! If you liked this movie, watch also "The Mark of Zorro".
64 Very good
I'he always wondered about the people who watch the movies titled like "The Mask Of Zorro" and then complain that they don't make them think. Well, the world is full of interesting people... Overall, this is one of the best quality DVDs I own. Picture and sound are amazing. Banderas is definitely the best Zorro of all times. His nemesis is a very compelling sadistic killer. The level of violense is precisely suitable for 8-9 years ols kids (at least it shows that if you stick a pointy metal bar into a human being, there is pain and blood). My son loves it very much and watches at least once a month. An I just cannot help doing it with him.
65 Entertaining Take on a Legend
I freely admit that I attended this film in the theatre with some rather low expectations - such as that it would serve only as brain- and eye-candy. Instead, what I got was a swashbuckling adventure tale the likes of which has not been seen since Errol Flynn. Antonio Banderas is the likeable bandit who is chosen by Anthony Hopkins (seen here as the "original" Zorro, met by Banderas' character as a little boy) to serve as his replacement. Catherine Zeta-Jones absolutely sizzles as the romantic female lead (the "original" Zorro's daughter, kidnapped as a baby and reared by her father's sworn enemy) - a strong, intelligent woman who knows her way around both sword and bullship. The chemistry between Zeta-Jones and Banderas is wonderful to watch. We see Banderas' Zorro grow as a swordsman, moving from "The pointy end goes into the other fellow" to a rather skilled fencer (Banderas was taking fencing lessons during the filming, so what the audience sees is an accurate view of his skills). We see Hopkins' de la Vega work through his own issues of hatred. This is a brilliant, gripping adventure film. Not to be missed.
66 I's Great
this movie showed two of my favorite actors Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins. this movie which tells the story of the legendary Zorro takes us back to the early days of the American History, gold rush, Mexican war and union. any way it shows the experience and good performance for all the movie team.
67 Its not as bad as they say, trust me.
Ok, here's an interesting one, mask of Zorro, hmmm, well, I dunno it only has Antonio Banderas and Katherine Zeta Jones AND Anthony Hopkins. Its only made under the all seeing eye of Steven Spielburg and directed by the guy who bought us the best bond in recent years, Goldeneye… I dunno….
Are you kidding, this film is class!
The Cast is sizzling, the story is exciting and engaging and the action sequences are just cool! The plot tells of an ageing Zorro (Hopkins) who passes his skills and ‘foxy’ moves onto a man he feels can except the responsibility (Banderas). Robbed of his beloved daughter by his nemesis Hopkins sets out to find vengeance in true Zorro style. The stunts are truly brilliant, one scene where ‘new Zorro’ jumps over horses is rip-roaring.
The entire movie has a Speilburg feel, you know when you can just feel that extra touch of class, almost as if its just right. The music helps but is nothing spectacular, what is spectacular is Katherine and Antonio together. They have a great chemistry which is born from a combination of their ... appeal and their charisma. True Hollywood combination which must be revisited soon.
Unlike Entrapment (with no offence to the masterful Sir. Connery) Zorro doesn’t ever think about just relying on Zeta’s ‘charm’ Instead it focuses on a grand romantic tale stretching across generations and nations. Its all told in an epic battle of good against evil.
The DVD is slick, the sound can be revved up to the level which this high octane movie deserves. Crisp picture and ample menues make this DVD worth the purchase.
68 AWFUL
I watched this movie on a 16 hour bus ride from Washington DC. It was absolutley no good. The plot was confusing, and the end was just creepy. The younger Zorro was pathetic, and the older Zorro was too weird. I would not reccomend this movie to families, as there is much violence. There was some historical reference, but not enough to consider this movie historical fiction.
69 Great movie , Great DVD you can't go wrong.
I don't give out 5 stars unless it near perfect. on a scale of 1-10 I give this 8.7
First of all the picture quality is sharp but the sound is incredible. You can hear every slash, clap, step pounding all over you 5.1 sound system. Check out the theatrical trailer. It is of reference quality. (the sound) The DVD could have had some more extra's but the overall quality of sound and picture makes up for it.
The film itself is entertaining and can be viewed many times repeatedly. It doesn't get dull too soon. Acting is there, plot is there, action is there. There really isn't anything bad I can say about this film . Well the stable scene with Zeta Jones was overdid a bit I think. but that just my tiny problem.
Anyway. Highly recommended DVD.
70 THIS MOVIE [is no good]! THE OTHER REVIEWERS ARE [wrong]!
Sorry to come across so strong, but because of reviews like the ones given at AMAZON.COM (gracious encouraging reviews) of this [horrible] movie- YES THIS A [PATHETIC] MOVIE- I sat through this long, ridiculous piece of trash with my ten year old niece and other family members. Luckily we were at a hotel in New York City and we only had to pay the price for pay-per-view once instead of six movie price tickets, but anyway, I was ashamed to have suggested this movie which is CERTAINLY NOT a family picture with the extreme violence spread out evenly through this exhausting abortion. Getting away from the point that is not just a fun little film like it is somewhat represented to be, it is just plain DUMB. The character of Zorro is destroyed by having a young and old version and the young one (Antonio) is just a filthy thief who could NEVER transform himself into a dignified person of noble blood in the few days allowed and a swashbucker woman, that was purely for laughs but annoying nonetheless. YES, Anthony Hopkins adds some depth to this otherwise completely dismal picture (which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of the one it really deserves) but come on people, don't let a little of his polished acting fool you into thinking this ANYWHERE near the quality of THE MARK OF ZORRO with Powers, which puts this high-budget loser to shame. Shame on you people for giving it five stars--...
71 Excellente!
This movie was the perfect mixture of romance, action and adventure. Anthony Hopkins turned in a surprisingly good performance as diego de la Vega (Zorro) Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones sizzled! I heartily recommend this movie, it blew me away.
72 Everlasting B E A U T Y!
Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and the everlasting beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones were so perfect!
I was never a fan of the Zorro character, and so many friends encouraged me to watch the movie but at first I refused... that was a mistake! Until I saw it on cable last year, oh my God... it is so perfect.
Genuinely a challenging, thrilling and loving story! Not to forget the touching music.
Don't make my mistake, go ahead and watch it if not buy it and you won't be sorry!
73 The legendary Zorro
About 5 years ago I first watched the Disney's Zorro series. I was 8 or 9 then and my child's heart was deeply affected by the knight in black. Then the time erased the image from my memory. At least I thought it did.
Sometime this year I was put in a very deep depression the previous day. I was literally ill and could not go to school. My parents rented the movie and I had to take my mind from my trouble. I kept on watching the movie over and over again from early till 9 p.m. It has some inexpressible beauty and charm to it that "may never come again" (from the soundtrack by Tina Arena and Mark Anthony) in nowadays world. After watching the movie you will walk away light-hearted. Antonio Bandras, Anthony Hopkins and Catherina Zeta Jones portray their characters in the right, desired angle of all the passion and want of justice, freedom and happiness in the California of 19th century. The legendary Zorro will never die or should I say the legend of Zorro?
74 Not Bad, Not Bad at All.
I think this was a wonderful movie. Catherine Zeta-Jones turned in a masterful performance as Elena, Zorro's (Anthony Hopkin's) Daughter. She almost had me convincd she was Spanish instead of Welsh.Antonio Banderas was a wonderful Zorro, he had you cheering for him all the way. As Don Alejandro, he was suave, sophisticated, and positively charming.Banderas and Zeta-Jones' chemistry amazed me, Their dance scene kept me staring, their "battle" was enamoring, and the confessional scene awed me. (Maybe she should have married him instead of Michael douglas)Don Raphael and Captain Love are marvelous villans. Anthony Hopkins is a suprisingly good Zorro. Don't rent this movie, buy it! You won't be disappointed.
75 Mask of Zorro
this movie was dazzling! I oved the fencing. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Antonio set the screen on fire with their intense chemistry. I heartily suggest this movie if you like "swash-buckling heroes" and good old fashioned romance.Anthony Hopkins did a miraculous job as Zorro.THis movie is the perfect mixture of action and romance, not to much of each.
76 A Fun Movie That Captivates You From Start To Finish
"The Mask of Zorro" is a classic swashbuckler film that offers its audience action, romance and adventure. "The Mask of Zorro" also has its elements of humor to it too; I especially liked the scene in the confessional where Antonio Banderas tries to pass himself off as a priest to the ever-so-fetching Catherine Zeta-Jones.
If you love a good sword fight, or just a good movie, you'll definitely enjoy "The Mask of Zorro." If you rent it, chances are, you'll end up buying it.
77 Cool Movie
This movie was really cool and I really liked it. This is the first movie I saw with Anotonio Banderas and he was really cool in this movie. Anthony Hopkins was pretty cool too. See this movie.
78 Zorro has never been given a better treatment!
Remember all those old movies where the swashbuckling hero swoops down to the rescue and saves the day for one and all, defeating the enemies and getting the girl all within a few hours' entertainment? "The Mask of Zorro" is a testament to those movies, embodying all of these characteristics in its magnificent story and exhilarating action sequences. With a powerhouse cast that seems as if they were born to play the parts they play, as well as strong music and a solid story, Zorro once again rises from Hollywood deterioration to save the day in a movie that is good, old-fashioned fun from beginning to end!
The old Zorro legend is given a new twist with this film, which begins with Don Diego de la Vega, the original and legendary Zorro, saving a group of prisoners from execution in the town square and leaving his mark on his nemesis, Don Raphael, warning him to leave and never return. Raphael does leave, but not before killing de la Vega's wife and taking his child, also having him imprisoned. Many years later, Raphael returns, "daughter" in tow, to name himself the new governer and to make sure his past enemy is all but alive in his prison. Through extreme craftiness and cunning, de la Vega escapes, only to discover his life is no longer what it once was.
His venture into the public brings him to the attention of one Alejandro Murrieta, who quarrels with him in the marketplace and then resolves himself to friendship. The two do share a past: on the day of Zorro's last battle, Alejandro, along with his brother, saved him from death. Now, Alejandro is distraught and torn with revenge for Captain Harrison Love, the murderer of his brother, and agrees to take on the mask once worn by de la Vega, who in turn will teach him the art of fighting with honor and grace.
The movie is one of those tributes to the old movies of the past, which played out the story of a hero who won all the goods and the girl in the ending. This one admittedly involves a few more characters than those old movies, but that's not to say that they don't each play a special part in the advancement of the movie. The romance, epic scale, action sequences and extreme wit are all present, making this a very exciting and memorable movie experience.
The advancement of the plot lies within the external battle between Raphael and our two heroes, who devise plan after plan to bring him to his downfall. They discover that he has made plans of tricking Santa Anna out of his own land, thus setting the stage for the impending climax which pits good against evil. The characters are all given the chance to become complex and intelligent, which is important in a movie like this. As they begin to outmatch one another, this adds on to the movie's tension over who will win out in the end.
The settings and music have a vast effect on the look and feel of this movie, which takes place in the 19th century. The sets are full of artistic influences from Spanish backgrounds and artists, giving it the true look and feel of the time period. Costume design also adds to the grandeur and pomp of the aristocracy as well as the impoverished conditions of the poor, adding to the contrast between the two differing demographics. The music, composed by James Horner, is amazing, employing Spanish instruments and rhythms while keeping a mordern feel to its score as well. The music adds a lot of heart to the movie, bringing out the intensity, the romance, the passion, and the victories with stylish and rousing compositions that fit right into the entire picture.
The choreography and stunts for this film are what really make it work for the audience, dazzling us with some of the most effective swordplay ever acted out on film. Most of the battle scenes involve men with swords, fighting against one another with an honorable form of battle. Actors Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stuart Wilson and Matt Letscher all hit the swordplay as if they are prose, adding believability as well as excitement to these scenes.
The actors mentioned above bring so much to the movie. Banderas is magnificent in his role as Alejandro, the new Zorro, a role he seems destined to have played. His looks, his charm, and his wit and personality all make this Zorro one of the finest ever. Hopkins brings his usual presence to the movie, establishing his character as one of immense wit and intelligence, while also possessing a vast knowledge of the art of fighting. Catherine Zeta-Jones sparkles in her role as Elena, de la Vega's daughter, and the chemistry between she and Banderas is dazzling and intense. Stuart Wilson and Matt Matt Letscher play our enemies, and they do so with performances to match those of the heroes.
"The Mask of Zorro" is one big piece of fun that works on many different levels. Some will find pleasure in watching the actors work with the material, some will find intrigue in watching the romance unfold, while the action and adventure will most likely be the most influential factor that wins over the audience. It never stops moving, and keeps dishing out the thrills, the laughs, and the cheers.
79 Antonio Banderas creates the best cover of Zorro!
I remember seeing this in the theatre and on video. I loved it on both. Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, and beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones bring this classic tale to life. There have been 40 versions of this film and Antonio Banderas is the first Hispanic/Latin actor to star in it. As the story goes, the old Zorro (Hopkins), trains a new Zorro (Antonio Banderas), to reclaim his daughter (Zeta-Jones), and avenge his enemy. Filled with comedy, fun, warmth, adventure, this film is for everybody. From beginning to end this film is outstanding. I remember visiting in California, and my dad and uncle were arguing over how beautiful Catherine was, ha-ha. Antonio Banderas is hilarious, Hopkins shines, and Catherine is breathtaking. Enjoy!
80 Great Movie
This is a lreally great movie and it has a lot of action in it and its very enyoyable.
81 A masterpiece movie!
If you're looking for a good movie, find The Mask Of Zorro. There are very funny and interesting parts. There must be only one scene on this movie I don't like.
The funny parts: The sword fights, the ancient style freak dancing, and the "Perverted" part. That girl kinda liked him and then he used the sword on both sides of her shirt, which took off her shirt, then she screamed.
The interesting parts: Almost everything I haven't mentioned yet.
82 This is THE BEST Movie
I loved every bit of it! THis is a great movie!
83 Very entertaining
This movie was much better than I expected. Most of the reviews when it came out were very poor and that prevented me from watching it until now. But I was very surprised. Anthony Hopkins is excellent as usual and the "love scene" between Zorro (Banderas) and Elena (Zeta-Jones) is an instant classic!
This movie is done as a typical super hero type of movie, sort of like Robin Hood and Batman. But it is done in more much of a realistic way, with the viewer being able to relate to most of the characters in the story. I highly recommend this to just about everyone out there. It should be appealing to all demographics.
84 Entertaining Action Film
Some movies are just fun to watch. The Mask of Zorro moves along at a brisk and entertaining pace. Banderas fits perfectly the character of Zorro.
The photography is nice and smooth.
Anthony Hopkins almost steals the show in the role of Zorro Sr. Some humor, some action, some love....works good.
I sincerely liked the movie....and have seen it several times.
85 Sensual Swashbuckling Fun
Talk about slasher films. Early on in The Mask of Zorro -- a stylish if old-fashioned swashbuckler best seen on a Saturday night with a giant tub of popcorn -- the eponymous hero, a dashing, sword-wielding Mexican nobleman (Hopkins), carves a bloody "Z" on the neck of the hissable villain (Wilson). Later on, with a few strategic flicks of his blade, the movie's second Zorro (Banderas) causes a beautifully sexual lady's dress to fall to her ankles. Touch.
Two Zorros? Yep, and together they're better than one. In this latest twist on pulp-writer Johnston McCulley's venerable 1919 tale about the gallant masked avenger who fights corrupt Spanish rule in 19th-century California, you get suave Hopkins as classic Zorro and sinewy, younger Banderas as his protg, upstart Zorro.
Hopkins, having been imprisoned for 20 years by Wilson, escapes. He soon transforms Banderas, a lowborn thief, into Zorro Jr., and the two team up to beat Wilson, reclaim Hopkins's now grown daughter (Zeta-Jones), who was kidnapped as a baby, and, oh, yes, help oppressed peasants.
Too violent for small fry (kids under 8 don't need to see impalings or a cut-off head floating in a water bottle), Zorro is snappily directed by James Bond vet Martin Campbell (GoldenEye). But what this film really has going for it are full-blooded performances by its two leads. As Katharine Hepburn once said of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, "He gives her class, and she gives him sex." Ditto for these two. Hopkins classes up Zorro, while Banderas makes it sizzle.
86 Zorro Unmasks the Beauty of the Classics
This movie left me breathless. Historically accurate and beautifully choreographed, The Mask of Zorro is one of those movies that carry with it a glimpse of what Hollywood movies used to be...adventurous and passionate. This film was put together like a full course meal...each plate is more enticing than the last, finally culminating in the grand finale...a good taste in the mouth, and a satisfied sigh. The sword fighting scenes are brilliantly executed. Anthony Hopkins is as distinguished and attractive as ever. Antonio Banderas is on fire, his energy palpable. Catherine-Zeta Jones is stunning, which couples wonderfully with her character's wild-hearted personality. See this movie, and be amazed!
87 Exciting take on an old classic
Sometimes, movies are not meant to be thoughtful, deep, or insightful. Sometimes, they're just made to entertain, and MASK OF ZORRO delivers that entertainment in spades!!! Set in the days of Spanish California, this flick tells the tale of Don Diego Vega (Anthony Hopkins), who was the original Zorro. In a plot very much like the classic "Count of Monte Cristo", Diego is suprised by his foe, Governor Montero. He sees his wife killed, baby daughter kidnapped, and is doomed to spent life in prison. 20 years later, Diego escapes to wreak his revenge, but is halted when he learns that Montero has adopted his daughter (the beautiful and spirited Catherine Zeta-Jones). Diego recruits another vengeful soul (Antonio Banderas), who has lost his brother to Montero's henchman, Capt. Love. Diego's attempt to make his new protege the next Zorro is main focus of the plot. Told in a fast paced & fun style, this film has everything for the action film fan: great sword fighting, passionate romance, and a health dose of wit & warmth. All 3 leads are splendid and this film is well worth your time. Highly recommended.
88 Best Movie Ever!
This is the best movie ever made! A must see!
89 Entertaining and Fun
This is one of my favorite movies. Well-paced, with a deft balance of comedy and drama, fantastic sword fights, and a dash of romance, "The Mask of Zorro" is one of those rare films that seems to bring it all together.
While Antonio Banderas does a wonderful job of bringing some personality to the role of Zorro, I'd also like to take this opportunity to commend Catherine Zeta Jones for her performance. While much has been said about her breathtaking close-ups (and there are thankfully a lot of them), I appreciated her often tongue-in-cheek take on the character of Elena.
As a DVD, "Mask" is also above average. Nice transfer of video and audio throughout with ample language and sound controls. A short, but welcome list of extras including trailer, and a mini featurette round out this title.
Highly Recommended.
90 THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES
The story line is one of the best. James Horner composed the music. He's the best composer. So the music is the best. The action is great. There is humor. What more can you ask for? I can't count how many times I've seen the movie. This movie is really touching and exciting to watch. It's a classic. Please see this movie today and you'll be sure to own it instantly. Just like me!
91 Romantic Revival
Created in 1918, the character of Zorro has captured romantic hearts and adventurous swash-buckling connoisseurs alike. Who can resist a scamp of a man who rides a wild steed, sears a "Z" with his , dare I say it, phallic sword, woos the women, and fights the good fight?
In this "Mask of Zorro" remake, I was totally enthralled by the lush costuming. A mask may just be a mask, but when worn by Antonio Banderas as he playfully disrobes Catherine Zeta-Jones whilst verbally and physically fencing this beauty, a deep sigh is indeed called for.
Anthony Hopkins, as an aging Don Diego, is wickedly subtle while training his hand-picked "new" Zorro. And the action packed adventures swarm on with renewed vigor. I liked the 1940 version with Tyrone Power and Douglas Fairbanks--I love this romantic revival.
A fun, flashy, film to escape with.
Thank you for your interest & comments--CDS
92 SPANISH BEAUTY(MASK OF ZORRO)
Gorgeous background, impecably directed, and beautifully acted are all the virtues of this beautiful Steven Spielberg's feature. Outstanding performances by Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and the beautiful english woman Zeta-Jones. This movie brings spanish magic and passion to the screen like no other piece of film. Anthony Hopkins brings feeling and magnetism, Antonio Banderas brings originality to the true Spanish Zorro, and he also brings compassion and personality. Catherine Zeta-Jones is portrayed beautifully, both humble and passionate. Steven Spielberg's repertoire and directing expertise are fantastic.
93 Zorro has many lives
How long can this guy live and how many times can this simpletheme play? The answer is infinite, when you gather a cast likeHopkins, Banderas, and Zeta-Jones. The Zorro character, created in the early 1900's, first played on the silver screen in the 40's and then on TV in the 50's. Now he's back, this time on the wide-screen.
I had my doubts, I mean it's strictly swashbuckling good-guys, bad-buys stuff, which bores me quickly, but I just wasn't ready for this. Sparks start flying immediately and barely letup throughout the tale. The principal trio of this cast is just looking for places to explode and they surely don't disappoint.
Zeta-Jones in her underwear, dueling Baderas for her father's honor? Really! This scene alone is worth the price of the DVD.
And Hopkins, playing the role of an aging Zorro, passing the torch to Banderas is simply incredible. Talk about yanking your emotions around, this actor knows exactly how to pluck each and every cord of the viewer's heartstrings.
Topping off this excellent film are the beautiful depictions of an early California with its Spanish flavor. Be sure to bring a large bag on popcorn when you watch this one ---- you'll be glued to your chair for well over an hour.
94 Why did you do it, Anthony?
I liked the old Zorro films, the b&w ones they used to show on TV. If you liked them, too, you won't like this Disney-ish remake one bit. The characters are flatter than a washboard, the plot is 100% predictable, the action unspectacular, the "humour" embarrassing. Worst of all: there is absolutely no Zorro magic. That's right, a Zorro film without Zorro magic. The old films lived from the guessing on everybody's part: who is the man with the mask? None of that here. The first Zorro in this film (Anthony Hopkins - why did you do it?) is demasked within ten minutes. The second one (Antonio Banderas) is introduced first as some kind of criminal clown, and then, totally unbelievably, transformed into the man with the mask. The backdrop to the story is a cartoonish depiction of evil Spanish colonial rule and Zorro becomes a quasi-American patriot battling against oppressive foreigners. Uggghh! Also, as has been noted in another review, there is NOTHING in this movie, you haven't seen before. They pieced this one together from Hollywood's trash- and graveyards.
95 Swashbuckling Adventure & Romance
This film is an all-time favorite of mine. I didn't think it could get any better. Romance, adventure, passion, suspense, good vrs evil, mixed with magical scenery, magnificent filming and directing, and a truely beautiful heroine. Then I saw the DVD version. Until you've seen it widescreen, you haven't seen Zorro. With 40% more of the original panaramic scope and brighter, more brilliant colors, this DVD will put all others to shame. The included trailor, picture galleries, and featurette are spectacular and put a real spin onto the film itself. I cannot stress the magnificent difference in mediums. If you haven't already, purchase this gorgeous DVD as soon as possible. You'll never regret spending a penny ~ and get a few glimpses you'd never seen before of Zorro and his world.

I think that Antonio and Catherine make a beautiful couple and I love the dance scene. And what better teacher than Anthony Hopkins, he has that voice of reason when he speaks. For the romantic at heart who like a story book ending this is the movie for you.

99 One for the collection
What a sigh of relief I breathed after seeing this film for the first time! One of my childhood heroes had been reborn onto the extremely silver screen of the 1990s, and we'd both come through the experience unscathed! One wonders what to say about such cultural icons as Zorro himself. Perhaps one can only compliment the portrayal of the, in this case, Zorros, plural. In fact, getting more for your money (two for one), as it were, was one of the exciting bonuses of this film. Both the elder and the apprentice Zorro earned our admiration and respect (eventually) by living up to the mark in some indefinable way. The fact that the film blended such colourful action with the right amount of both pathos and humour, is another reason for its impact and, in my opinion, success. And of course, casting Catherine Zeta-Jones in such a role was an additional stroke of genius. This is a great film, one that should take pride of place in every collection. I'm still thinking about the film that could have been made: what a terrible risk to take! But what a payoff in the end! Great cinema.
100 Good Entertainment
This movie was a surprise to me. The story from beginning to end, if not perfect, was very close to it. And NO SEX scenes. Yes, Zorro undressed Elena with his sword. BUT NO NUDITY, NO SEX. Only a good movie do this.
Each scene has a different flavor: Children; abused overworked "slaves"; horse with attitude; the original Zorro is sophisticated with wits; the new Zorro from bandit to student to fighter to dancer to hero to father; a beautiful female protagonist with a brain and courage to challenge; and two villians who deserved to die.
Fight scenes did not insult my eyes. Acrobatics were well placed, fencing moves were fast. The strikes, blocks and parries are all there. And other than swords, all other objects were well used as weapons. Elizabeth Zeta Jones did a good fencing, and dancing routine. The moments she and Banderas together were unforgetable. Anthony Hopkins did it again: His graceful and subtle movements; His commanding aura. and an ending that audiences expected.
And did I mention humor was included? This is entertainment.
Strange scenes: the opening scene, felt like a James Bond introduction except with a sword instead of a gun.
Robin Hood? No, Zorro has more graceful moves and is a fighter. Felt more like Musketeers from the circus with some Bruce Lee moves.
