When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.

Enter Beth Ginsberg, Culinary Institute of America (CIA) graduate and natural foods chef. When Milken hired her in 1995, she turned his medicinal soy drinks into tasty, healthy fruit smoothies, his tofu-spread sandwiches into Vegetable Reubens--with tempeh bacon! It became clear that a healthy, cancer-fighting diet need not mean an end to culinary pleasure. In the beautifully photographed The Taste for Living Cookbook, Ginsberg collects more than 75 of Milken's favorite dishes, from Tofu Dog Casserole with a Pretzel Crust to Greek Spinach Pie in a Phyllo Nest to Devil's "Fool" Cake with Cocoa Frosting. Colorful icons next to each recipe let you know how long a dish will take to prepare--many are under an hour from kitchen to table. Nutritional details are given at the end of each recipe, and Ginsberg notes when a substitution can be made (say, low-fat turkey in place of tempeh in a sandwich). Proceeds from the sales of The Taste for Living Cookbook will go to further CaP CURE's research--resulting, one hopes, in even more delicious, healthful meals from chef Ginsberg. --Rebecca A. 1 Good Stuff
The book presents recipes attractively. I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents. Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else.
2 a treat for the eyes
what i loved most about this book is the 'photojournalist'
format...just looking at the photographs and the tasty,
colorful food motivated me...interesting
3 Great for those who are lactose intolerant
I purchased this book because it contained recipes like flan that didn't require any dairy products. It also provides some great tips for substituting out ingredients like cream and other milk products without sacrificing texture and taste.

At first, I was a bit concerned that most of the recipes in the book called for ingredients that I had never heard of, but even the small health-food section of my local grocery store had almost everything that I needed.

4 If I Were A Rich Man...
The taste For Living Cookbook Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes For Fighting Cancer is a nicely photographed book. The recipes are basic health food fare. Cut down on fat, avoid meat, eat lots of veggies and soy. If I was a wealthy man I would have a professional chef move into my home and cook these complicated meals im my professional kitchen. I would also go to a medition center in Massachusetts "based on Ayurveda tradition" and I would "invite a doctor trained in both Western and Ayurveda medicine to move into...our house for a few months" I don't mean to be cynical but I have neither the time or money to follow this books recipes. I did not find this book very helpful .
5 a book for cooks with penty of time on their hands
All of the recipes in this book look delicious but after having the book for almost a year I have only tried out a few. The reason? Most of the main course recipes take over an hour to prepare. The Not-Meat Loaf, for example, is described as taking over 60 minutes and that doesn't include the time it takes to prepare cooked brown rice and lentils the recipe requires. This maybe fine for Mr. Milken, who can afford his own personal chef, but those of us in the real world need recipes that are not only healthy but quick.
6 Loving A Taste For Living
I am thoroughly enjoying the recipes in The Taste For Living. The recipes are easy to follow, dishes are beautifully photographed, and everything I have tried has been delicious. The only addition I wish it had is an index referenced by ingredients.
7 This is the best, highest quality cookbook I own!
I am not sick, do not have cancer or heart disease (at least that I am aware of). I bought this book - and subsequently the companion book - because I am interested in eating healthy. What a surprise! Not only am I eating healthy, I am eating the best prepared food I have ever made. Every assertion this book has made about itself is true. Every recipie I try is an amazing success. Every single one! It was my lucky day when I came across this book!
8 Yummy
I saw this on Martha Stewart and it took me six months to remember to buy it... yum. Money well spent. I was already vegitarian, for 8 years, so I don't remember the exact taste of meatloaf, but even if these recipes aren't exact replicas, they are good. The meatless/soy reuben is delicious and the thousand island dressing does taste exactly like the real except that it's good for you. Worth a try!
9 Take care of your body and it will take care of you!
It is about time someone developed easy-to-follow recipes using ingredients that are good for us. I recommend this book for anyone who realizes their body is precious. Thank you Ms. Ginsberg and Mr. Milken for teaching me and my family how to use healthy ingredients to create delicious meals. We've never felt better!
10 After Chemo, Some Folks Will Eat Anything!
I'm sorry to disagree with so many "true believers", but I too am a cancer survivor and I truly believe it is the fear of relapse rather than the taste of Mr.Milken's concoctions that influenced so many of these rave reviews. I tried the soy "smoothies" and found they tasted better on the way out. After trying his Devil's "Fool" Cake, I felt like a fool shelling out all this money! Life is too short- I know- so eat REAL food! If you buy this book, consider it nothing more than a donation to Milken's worthy Cancer research organization. Spare yourself the culinary agony of sampling these "dishes". When I licked cancer, I treated myself to a juicy rib-eye. Of course, I watch what I eat and mind my cholesterol. But I must have pleasure too. Cancer was painful enough!
11 Martha Stewart said the food was good, so we had to try it.
We have tried many of the items and have found all of them very good. We were looking for low-fat, non-dairy foods and have been very surprised at how good all of the recipes have been. It takes some time to put them together, but it is well worth it. Some of our favorites are the Apple pie, Lasagna, veg. soup, ruben sandwich, pizza. So far we have not be disappointed in any of them. We will be buying copies of this book for our friends, so they can have the same experience we did.
12 Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes Are My Favorite Recipes Too!
I like to eat healthy because I want to prevent cancer. This recipes are for everyone, not just for cancer patients. I am an 18 year old vegetarian and I love the recipes in this book. They are proof that you can eat great food and stay healthy at the same time.

The belief that something good for you has to taste awful is just a myth. Just try the recipes in this book and convince yourself!

13 Great Recipes
This book has easy-to-prepare recipes which taste great
14 Tasty and easy recipes
I have 3 very young children and I don't have time to make extravagant dinners. So, I really enjoyed this cookbook because of the easy and healthy recipes. And it's food that my kids will eat even though it's GOOD for them. The "hot dogs" taste like real hot dogs! I saw the authors on "Martha Stewart Living" making all these delicious foods (quesadillas, deserts, etc.) so I decided to get the book and I'm glad I did!
15 This cookbook should be used in everyone's home!!
Every page of this book holds educational information that would help any and all individuals. A person need not be ill to reap the rewards of good nutrition from the recipes in this book. I saw Mike Milken and Ms. Ginsberg on a television show, listened to what they had to say, then immediately went to the phone in search of the book. It took 3 phone calls to places that were already sold out. Finally, on the fourth call, I found my copy. I used the pantry list in the book to help me in the grocery store that same day. Dinner and dessert that night was marvelous!! I will definitly try every single recipe in my book because I have always TRIED to be a healthy eater, now I can always BE a healthy eater! A big THANKS to: Mike Milken and Beth Ginsberg Jeanne Lawcock Derr
16 Excellent, healthy, great tasting recipes
Beautiful and healthy cookbook, shows unique and creative and step by step dettails to prepare healthy, and "comfort" foods for the family....so all can eat together...kids won't know you've changed their diet along with yours...you can serve this to company. Great for vegartarians, and vegans who wish to cook for the whole family, and various dietary disciplines.
17 My new favorite cookbook
Not only is this cookbook beautiful to look at, but the food is also amazing. I was always reluctant to try soy products, but this cookbook makes them taste familiar and delicious. I have purchased several copies as Christmas gifts - I want to share it with everyone.
18 Unbelievable banana cream pie and brownies!
So far, I've only tried the desserts, but they are amazing. I never knew cooking with soy could taste this good!
19 Revolutionize the way healthy food taste
Mr. Milken's book revolutionizes the way healthy food looks and tastes. By substituting fresh, natural, low-fat ingrediants into everyday recipies...anyone who wants to eat healthy...but not give up the taste of unhealthy foods....can! This book is AMAZING! Every recipe I've tried has come out gormet (both in taste and astetics)...and I can't even cook!
20 Incredibly designed to taste and appear like the real stuff!
For years I have tried to incorporate soy products into my diet. I tried various recipes in magazines and other cookbooks, but the meals were never quite right in the taste and appearance departments. The recipes in Taste for Living, however, are exactly what I was looking for. I was pleasantly shocked when I not only looked forward to eating the food in these recipes, but so did the children! With a long line of cancer and heart disease in my family, I am grateful for the recipes and tips in this book. I know these dietary change may save my life and the lives of my family members.
21 The research has been done for us. Let's use it !
It is wonderful that we have such an intelligent man to help us to be able to eat healthy and for Beth to be so ingenious and enthusiastic to share all the fruits of their labor with us. I appreciate it and all the people who I have told about this book of knowledge want to buy a copy also. Thank you for saving us from disease and making it so appealing to want to follow these receipts.
