Nab the star-studded comedy-adventure that dazzled moviegoers everywhere! It's the action-packed tale of three loyal swordsmen (Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt) who are joined by an eager recruit (Chris O'Donnell) to protect the King of France. Together, the foursome battle enormous odds in their attempt to defeat an evil royal advisor (Tim Curry) and a seductive envoy (Rebecca De Mornay) plotting to overthrow France's crown -- fighting against both time and scores of enemies! You'll cheer out loud when these exciting muskeeteers face danger, fun, and adventure at every turn -- proving they are the greatest swashbucklers who ever lived!
1 All for fun and fun for all!
The Three Musketeers is the greatest swashbuckling tale ever told, and there is no movie version better than this. It's funny, it's well done, and most of all, it's action-packed! The swashbuckling action starts from the very start of the movie and doesn't let up! The story is about 'three loyal swordsmen' and their young recruit and their quest to stop the evil Cardinal who wants to kill the King. You may search high and low, but you'll never find a greater action/adventure than this one!
2 All for one!
D'Artagnan is not having a good day. He comes to Paris to join the Musketeers only to discover they've just been disbanded by Cardinal Richelieu. Things are looking up, though. He's got three duels to fight! Fortune turns Her fickle face again when he realizes those three opponents are three of the Musketeers.

That's one of the opening moments of this 'all for one' romp. While I can't say it's entirely authentic Dumas, the spirit of fun and frolic pervades.

"THree Musketeers" is definitely worth a laugh---or three!
3 Only A Fool Would Try To Arrest Us A Second Time In One Day!
This movie, while perhaps not authentic, is a lot of fun, period!

While many "Dumas" purists may be upset by the liberties taken with the story, this movie has a lot of entertainment value. I also have no problem letting my kids watch this movie . There are some subtle innuendos but they never crossed the line in my opinion to the point where most kids would even have a frame of reference in which to understand them. But, to each his own, I'm more concerned about gratuitous violence in a movie than innuendos of the sort found in this film.

I thought the actors and actresses did a perfectly fine job for the type of movie that it is (an entertaining light film with just enough tension in it, like that big ugly guy in the prison), in particular I thought Oliver Platt as Porthos was particularly entertaining and of course Tim Curry was excellent in his role as Cardinel Richelieu and Michael Wincott as Rochefort was an excellent secondary villain.

I've watched this movie many many times already and it's one of those that we pull off the shelf from time to time to watch as a family, along with other standby's like "The Princess Bride", "Robin Hood Men In Tights" and "The Holy Grail".

I would also like to say that I thought those folks who recommended the earlier version of "the Three Musketeers" w/ Michael York, Rachel Welch etc. were also right on the money! Those movies (The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers) are fabulous and timeless classic versions which are also immeasurably entertaining!

Enjoy!

4 I loved it!!!
I'm 15 years old, and i've been watching this movie sence i was about 6. We taped it off the disney channel - and our tape is seriosly falling apart becuase we've watched it so much! This movie is halarious! My sister and i can even quote this whole movie. For those people complaining about its differances from the book, who cares! If you want it exactly like the book, why watch it at all. All movies differ from the books that they're based on. Though this one maybe totally differant, its still good, so why on earth would you complain about something so good, even if its differant.
5 F.U.N
is this film corny? silly? fun? YES! its a FUN romp! The acting is great the story is great its a very well done version of the classic story. the sword fighting isnt bad either. If you have seen this you must get it quick, most disney films don't last long. If you like swashbuckling movies that are fun and pay homeage to the films of days long gone this is for you!
6 BRAVO!!!
Definitely a great epic movie and one of my personal favorites, The Three Musketeers, brings to the screen the tale of who else, but Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan. Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt, Tim Curry, and the gorgeous Rebecca De Mornay whose performances are simply amazing, make this movie one of the best of its kind. (Tim Curry's character, in particular, as Cardinal Richelieu, steals the show!)
The actors' great talent and chemistry clearly shows, thus providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again. The castles, the battles and the costumes are all wonderful! The Three Musketeers is a movie about love, honor, bravery, loyalty, and heroes from a time long gone. It is a great movie indeed!
7 Wish I could give it O stars
The cast seems ludicrously out of place in this movie--only Anwar is partially believable and her part is slight.

If you wish to see an interesting an authentic three musketeers, look for AISN B00006LPC5 , a 1972 version that is incredible.

8 A feel good family movie
I've loved this movie since it first came out. It was one of those movies that had enough of everything to keep anyone entertained. There's a little romance, some mystery, and a lot of action. And, it's appropriate for almost any age group, which makes it an ideal family movie.

My only complaint with the DVD is it's lacking in the special features. There's nor delete scenes nor trailer, and the only two extras are the music video for the theme "All For Love" and a featurette. I can excuse the lack of deleted scenes because the movie came out in 1993, and studios seldom keep the scenes for that long. I do with is had a trailer though.

9 All for one and all for fun!
A favorite in our house, this movie offers something for everyone. Disney outdid themselves when remaking the classic Alexandre Dumas story. It's been done so many times and very well, but this one was just so much fun.

The line up of actors for this film is quite incredible. The starring cast consist of Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt, Tim Curry, and Rebecca De Mornay. Not only was the cast incredible, the title track All For Love is performed by Sting, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart. Can you imagine the cost of making this movie today?

This movie resonates the very essence of Action Film. The fighting, racing horses, and dueling almost never end. Did I mention this was an action film? The violence in this film is more by implication than gruesome portrayals of death and fighting.

Add to the action a high dose of comedy. Oliver Platt is hilarious as Porthos. Tim Curry adds whit and humor to the evil character of Cardinal Richelieu.

The Three Musketeers was filmed on location in Europe which adds a believability that allows the viewer to be swept away into the story. Thousands of extras, hundreds of horses, and beautiful costumes and photography combine to make this a fantastic movie you could watch over and over.

10 Great Movie
I think The Three Musketeers is a great movie. It's funny, clever, packed with action, and romance. With a cast of Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnel, and Charlie Sheen, you can't go wrong.
11 The SPIRIT of Dumas' musketeers is alive and well
As I read the book I realized that the casting on this movie was superb even if the story line leaves that of the book's after the initial duel and the entire plot line would make only one chapter in the original book. This is still a great movie even if it doesn't follow the book beyond the names. I have watched this countless times and will watch it many more. I still laugh at the jokes and get tense with the suspense.

D'Artagnan has come to Paris to join the musketeers but when he gets to Paris, he finds that the musketeers have just been disbanded by the Cardinal under approval from the Regent King (although the King disapproves of the timing and manner). He quickly runs afoul of Athos, Porthos and Aramis and has duels scheduled with each an hour apart at the old convent. Just as the swords are crossed, the Cardinal's men appear to arrest them and d'Artagnan makes a stand with the three musketeers thereby not only making him an outlaw but making a favorable impression with his new comrades who recognize his father's name as a valiant musketeer that died in service to the king. From there on, the movie bears absolutely no resemblance to the book (and d'Artagnan's father was not dead or a musketeer). When d'Artagnan is arrested and interrogated about the whereabouts of the three musketeers, he overhears plans of the Cardinal's to send a secret treaty to the Duke of Buckingham ("who rules England the way the Cardinal rules France") in an attempt to overthrow the King's rule and claim the crown for himself. Rescued from the chopping block by the three musketeers, they immediately give chase to the Cardinal's messenger as his henchmen all over the country pursue them to claim the reward for their capture. It is a thrilling, action packed chase with a wonderful climax and lots of great zingers from Porthos. I honestly do not think any other actors alive could have pulled off these characters as well as Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen and Oliver Platt.

The spirit of Dumas' musketeers is alive and well with these four. Charlie Sheen is excellent as the dark eyed and dreamily romantic Aramis with a fervor for religion. Keifer Sutherland's reserved air is perfect for the noble and quiet Athos. Oliver Platt is exactly what and how I picture Porthos. Both men and women will love this movie for the perfect mix of adventure and romance.

Long live the musketeers!!

12 Festive Musketeers
Alexandre Dumas may or may have not liked the Disney version of his story, but your whole family should. This often remade classic is more comedic in this version. I personally liked it. But then I have liked most versions in their style. The 1973 version with Oliver Reed as Athos and this version with Keifer Sutherland as Athos stand out above the rest in my humble opinion. The 1973 version for the drama and this one for the comedy.

Tim Curry is marvelous as Cardinal Richelieu. He is so borderline outrageously lecherous you think he is going to burst out laughing like a madman or go into song from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". He never plays the piety like Charlton Heston did in the 1973 version. He goes more for the deviousness of an outright power mad religious leader.

The entire cast is great. With Charlie Sheen, Chris O'Donnell, Oliver Platt, and Rebecca DeMornay how could it be anything but well acted. I would bet the entire cast had a great time filming this version. The dramatic parts with DeMornay as Lady DeWinter are quite touching and the comedic parts with Porthos the Pirate, played by Platt, are quite funny. I was impressed with Stephen Herek's direction.

Disney did a great job of transferring this movie to DVD. The DVD picture and sound quality is first class. The DVD includes a featurette, theatrical trailers, and Bios. Well worth adding to your collection of movies like "The Princess Bride", "Ever After", and "Robin Hood".

13 Too dreadful to even be enjoyed as "fluff"
A simply terrible, limp, half-hearted, "joke-y" remake of The Three Musketeers that simply did not need to be remade. There is an excellent version by Richard Lester (with Raquel Welch, Oliver Reed etc.) which is not dated at all and has wonderful performances and equisite sets and costumes...it is also extremely funny.

So the only motivation here must have been the BUCKS...a remake with Brat Packer stars like Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen. The script is wretched and the jokes stale, TV-type and not very funny. Completely out of period and needless to say unfaithful in the extreme to the spirit of the book.

It isn't often you need to specifically mention BAD COSTUMES as ruining a film....either they are splendid (as in Lester's Three/Four Musketeers) or not worth mentioning at all. Here one simply has to mention how awful they are! They don't look the least bit authentic, and the female characters are clearly dressed in clothes from another century, and not the 17th either. Polyester positively gleams and many characters are in clothing that is obviously the wrong size. The only thing I could guess is that the producers were unwilling to make a full complement of period costumes for a movie with such a big cast, and raided some cheap-o wardrobe rental place for items. Even the female leads look cheaply dressed and tacky.

Anything good at all to say? Michael Wincott (Rochefort) and Rebecca DeMornary were clearly not warned that this was a frivolous silly project, so they actually ACT and turn in sincere performances that would have worked well in a REAL movie. This despite appalling costumes and hairdoes -- Wincott in glitter and DeMornay with a beehive hairdo that has to be see to be believed.

Everybody else clearly got that this was a big joke and made off with their paychecks. Tim Curry chews the scenery like a rapid dog and everybody else seems half asleep.

If you have the faintest self-respect and enjoyment of the The Three Musketeers, rent the 70s Lester version. Leave this one on the shelf.

14 All for one
By far the best Mustketeer movie I've seen, and I've seen them all. None of the others compare. Loved the action, comedy and adventure. Have watched it over and over again. Great family move. A must see for everyone.
15 Entertaining stab at familiar story by Disney!
This is at least the seventh film version I have seen of the "The Three Musketeers" and there have been more in the years since it was made (1993). As such I don't think it pays to compare it to the much better and much worse films made over the years.
Disney did a nice job updating this film for its intended audience. Although the acting doesn't compare to Richard Lesters version it wasn't bad either. Rebecca Demorney is especially good gracing the film with her cool beauty. Chris O'Donnell was a little to over the top in a few scenes, but he was the cute teen idol of the day and his natural charm is hard to dislike. I also disagree with the reviewer who thought the King and Queen were to young and inexperienced. They made an adorable couple and Julie Delpy as the lady in waiting was an unexpected bonus. The beautiful shooting locations of Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna and the forts in Germany add considerably to the cinematography. Overall a very nice effort along with a great song by Bryan Adams, Sting, and Rod Stewart.
The DVD is fine as far as it goes. The music video for "All for Love" is included. The "featurette" highlights some of the key points of the film, but I was left wondering why the films trailer wasn't also included, or at least a TV spot/commercial for the film? Also, while the widescreen is my preferred format, considering how short the film is, I was surprised the fullscreen edition wasn't included as well. A running commentary or some interviews would have rounded out this release better, but considering the reasonable price (especially for Disney) its still a good deal.
16 Awful, but fun to heckle, so I'll give it two stars
What can I say? Obviously I disagree with many other reviewers here.
1) The dialogue is terrible. When we realized just how bad this movie was going to be, we took turns guessing what the next line of dialogue would be.
A lot of cliched lines from other movies are in this one.

2) The main characters oscillate between stupid, sleazy, and bland. Except for some pasted on quirks or mannerisms, the four musketeers are all alike. Tim Curry was fun to watch "chewing scenery" to try and make up for the really bad script.

3) The swordplay [stinks]. The guns used by the heroes are absurdly accurate. The costumes and hairstyles of the four musketeers make them look like English Puritans. The 1974 version of Three Musketeers did a much better job. Or the Lord of the Rings movies.

4) The plot [stinks]. The Cardinal, a known Francophile, plotting to betray France to England, and thinking he could get away with it ?! The villian declaring before a crowd of others that he's going to have the King killed. A silly "you killed my father" subplot that feels it was taken right out of Empire Strikes Back. I could go on.

Anyways, you may find, like other reviewers, you really like this movie. I found this movie best viewed with friends with a sense of humor. It would make a great MST3K target.

17 Inaccurate but Hilarious
Warning: If you are interested in historical accuracy, this is not the film for you.

Then again, with the proliferation of "Knights" movies that clearly have nothing at all to do with historical England, France, or anywhere else - any time else - historical accuracy clearly isn't everything. This movie is absolutely hilarious. The script is littered with one-liners and recurring theme-gags; the Three Musketeers take almost nothing seriously and D'Artagnion follows right along with them. The scenery is lush and varied and detailed, and Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu - well, what can one say? The sword-work is flashy, television-style swashbuckling, but then, so is the movie itself!

"Champagne?"
"We're in the middle of a chase, Porthos!"
"You're right. Something red."

Never mind that the "drinking age" even today in France is lower than D'Artagnion's probable age, and that there was no such thing as a "legal drinking age" in France - or anywhere - at the time. That's not the point. I thoroughly enjoy this movie for what it is - a piece of fiction concerning figures with vaguely familiar historical names.

18 It's so bad it's good
what happens when you mix charlie sheen, keefer sutherland, chris o'donell and tim curry together? one strange coctail party. But add swords and abunch of funny hats adorned with large feathers and you've got a film that has no depth to it at all and you can enjoy with the whole family.
The Three Musketeers staring charlie sheen may be one of the most rediculously corny/historically inacurate movies ever made. But that's not to say it was bad... okay maybe it was but it was one of those movies that you watch when you don't want to think to hard about plot line and still want to see a bit of action. i would have given this movie only three stars for the guy who says 'don't lose your head' when the d'artagnon is about to be beheaded BUT Tim Curry was in it, and he tries so hard so i had to give it four stars... hahaha... tim curry as a cardinal, still makes me laugh. all in all a good movie to watch with kids 8-11 beause there are some a parts that would be pretty scary... or by yourself when your feeling goofy...
19 Hilarious
This movie is only good if you want to see how hilarious the plot line, script, dialogues, and action scenes are. This "Americanized" France is absurd to begin with....I thought movies for children were supposed to educate, and not to encourage complete and utter ignorance of other cultures and especially about a masterpiece of literature. This movie is an insult to Dumas' work......if you really liked this movie you surely NEVER read the novel and probably do not read much at all, except Cosmo and Vogue of course....
20 I love this movie...
I can't found words to express how much I like this film...it's amazing the work of the actors, the script...everething!!!.
This is a new version of the classic tale by Alexandre Dumas, on an excellent Disney scale, with Charlie Sheen (Aramis), Kiefer Sutherland (Athos), Oliver Platt (Phortos), Chris O'Donnell (D'Artagnan), Tim Curry(Cardinal Richelieu) and Rebecca De Mornay.
This story is about a attractive teenager called D'Artagnan that want to become a Musketeer, but when he arrived to the place where the musketeers used to be, he realaised that they are not more musketeers, that was because the cardenal had disolved them.
In not very common and diferent conditions he met three musketeers that late, will be his friends.
This is a great film.I saw it at least three times. And I am not regreat. You will found that this film is excellent. And what's more, it's a classic, no??. "ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL" who don't know this famous sentence??.
21 Great Mix of Comedy and Sword Play
This is a really great movie to get the funny bone going full blast. Out of all of the "Three Musketeers" movies this one is far and away the best.
22 This movie was not based on Alexander Dumas's novel
but on somebody else's story who used Dumas's characters from The Three Musketeers. The story is completely different from the book, many characters play absolutely different roles. Why? Oh yeah, so it would be "ok" for American children to watch. Just make another Peter Pan movie, don't screw one of the greatest classics!!
23 Mommy Beware! Disney's TTM is Not a Kid's Film!
I purchased this title because my 7-year old son is beginning to enjoy adventure films, and TTM is certainly a classic story.
This Disney version is rated PG, so I figured there would probably be a few light-weight explicitives used in order to jack-up the rating. Wrong! I'm so glad I previewed this film first, because there is so much sexual innuendo and sensuality here, especially for a Disney film. In addition, Aramis (Charlie Sheen), is the gastliest character of the bunch because of his so-called "priestly" role! In one scene of note, Aramis shows little restraint as a young lady throws herself on him as he's quoting bible verses to her. He then backs-off for a moment, seemingly bringing some sense to a "steamy" situation. But that did'nt last more than a few seconds before a complete role-reversal takes place where he starts to lead the advance, all the while justifying it with pseudo-religious quotes.

As a discerning parent, this is not the kind of film I want my kids to watch. How this film got a PG rating is beyond me!

24 Heroic, funny and star-studded!!!
First of all; "All For Love" - the theme song (music video incl.) for the film, written by Bryan Adams, Michael Kamen (the film's composer) and Robert John "Mutt" Lange; and performed by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting was a great tune for promoting this fantastic piece of film back in 1993!!

As it went to #1 on the Billboard Charts back in Novemeber 1993, the film did very well on the box office. Which made sense...

It's directed by legendary Stephen Herek, and stars ALL these great actors:
Keifer Sutherland,
Rebecca De Mornay,
Chris O' Donnell,
Oliver Platt,
Tim Curry,
Gabrielle Anwar,
Julie Deply,
Michael Wincott and
Charlie Sheen.

Great story, acting, cinematography, music. It's funny, heroic and a real old fashioned historical action/adventure only Hollywood can produce!!

Enough said!

25 My favorite musketeers movie
All right, let it be said. This movie has NOTHING to do with Dumas's novel. It isn't even close. There, now that that's out of the way, let me just say that this is a great film. It's done in typical Disney style, with an incredible cast that brings to life this classic tale with a lot of flare and some good, old-fashioned fun.

The entire cast is great: the three Musketeers (Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Charlie Sheen) are hilarious, and the impetuous young D'Artagnan (Chris O'Donnell) proves the perfect complement to this already comic trio. Add Tim Curry and Michael Wincott as the bad guys and you've got yourself a comic, action-packed adventure that is sure to please the whole family.

26 a fun and entertaining film
This film isn't very faithful to Dumas' novel. It strays pretty far from the story. The script completely butchered the characters of Athos and Milady. That being said, I enjoyed the film very much in spite of its deviation from the book. I did find it to be very true to the spirit of the book and the characters. I also loved the cast. I was skeptical about Charlie Sheen as Aramis, but I loved him in the role. Oliver Platt was perfect as Porthos. He increased my appreciation for the character. Chris O'Donnell was good as D'Artagnan. And I liked Keifer Sutherland and Rebecca DeMornay as Athos and Milady in spite of the fact that the characters were completely butchered by the script. The film was also funny and wasn't full of sex and violence. I recommend it.
27 Great Action with a few laughs
A musketeer wannabe challanges each of the Three Musketeers to a dual. After realizing who they are, the wamnabe joins the Three Musketeers to stop a plot against the King of France. The Three Musketters become the wannabe's mentors.
28 Very good
Read the book. This movie captures the spirit of D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Not very faithful to the story, but a very interesting and amusing script nonetheless.

Cardinal Richelieu is not bad, but could be better, one minor fault... perhaps a bit too funny. The major fault in the movie is without doubt the king and queen. I mean.... the queen is not bad.. very beautiful.. but VERY YOUNG.. and the king besides being VERY YOUNG is VERY PATHETIC.. i mean... well.. lets just say he gives me the nerves.

Besides that, all the other characters are well portraied, Rochefort is great and Mylady played by the beautiful goddess Rebecca de Mornay is perfect.

A very entertaining movie, maybe the best 3 musketeer movie so far and about time too.

29 ALL FOR ONE
...I saw this movie when it first came out at the theater, and I've loved it ever since. This is a very light story with just enough action and adventure to keep the viewer interested, but at times it doesn't always have to follow the original story. You have the main characters and the plot, and there's some humor which you can't take this movie too seriously. And I personally feel that Chris O'Donnel did a great job ( at such a young age..., he doesn't ruin a film with his presence. He's a very good and aspiring young actor. He did a GREAT job (TWICE) of playing Robin in the last two BATMAN films. I mean really, if he was that bad do you think he'd be offered the part???)along with his coherts: Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt and Kiefer Sutherland. The chemistry bwetween these actors were really great. TWO THUMBS UP!!!
30 Best Movie Ever!
Even after all these years, after high school, college, working at Blockbuster for 5 years watching every movie ever, this is still my favorite movie hands down. I know it tends to be silly at times, I know it has little true cinematic value, but who cares! It has swords, great acting, larfs, and fun out the wazoo. "Come D'artagnan! We're saving the king!"
31 An entertaining hour and a half!
This film has everything you need for a nice, sunday afternoon movie, action, adventure and some nice-looking men(for the men there are good-looking women too).Chris O'Donnell is the wide-eyed innocent,D'argtanion. But the performance of the film has to go to Keifer Sutherland, who plays the brooding, mysterious Athos. That man is magnificent,he nails Athos to a tee,and was exactly how he was written in the book, the quiet, but respected leader. The film's stars all seem to play their roles well, although the 5 stars weren't awarded due to the story not being similar enough to the book. There is no dramatic scenes after Constance's death (in the film she is not killed),the scene where the Countess De Winter is killed is too short and the film itself lasted just 1 hour and a half.I am yet to see the 1979 version but it will be interesting to see whether Oliver Reed can top Keifer's performance as I have never seen a better Athos.A very enjoyable watch!!!
32 I Know How You Love A Good Adventure
While not the most faithful of adaptions, this Disney version of the oft-filmed Dumas classic IS entertaining and surprisingly well-acted (except by O'Donnell, but we'll get to that in a minute).

The object here was obviously to provide solid family entertainment based on a familar story, "Disneyfying" the darker aspects of the story and acted out by performers who were concious of the B nature of the production.

However, no one seems to have informed Keifer Sutherland or Rebecca DeMornay of the jokiness of the project; they both turn in intense, startling performances that raise the quality of the film several notches above typical live-action Disney fare. Sutherland, in particular, deserves accolades: In my opnion he comes the closest of any actor ever to nailing the Athos of the book, and I am including the revered 1970's film version in this statement. Sutherland manages to be brooding, tortured, violent while simultaneaously letting the audience glimpse the vunerablity underneath the surface of the most interesting and complex of the Musketeers.

DeMornay is his match in their few scenes together, while not the Lady DeWinter of the book (this DeWinter is ultimately remorseful) she has a strong presence and great chemistry with Sutherland. They make you believe in their long-buried love, and the final scene with them together is a thunderbolt.

The rest of the cast ranges from good (Sheen, surprisingly) to adaquate (everyone else). The one exception is O'Donell; he is just plain bad. Why does he have a career? He can't act, is not fun to watch and not even very goodlooking. I wish he would stop ruining movies with his presence. If you don't mind O'Donell, you are almost sure to enjoy this movie, as he and the second rate production values are its only faults.

All in all, a decent rendition of a remarkable book, and very entertaining for a wide range of people. And as for Sutherland, well, with his show "24" the world is finally taking note of what many of us saw in this film. He is something else.

33 Pure Fun...A Great Buddy Film
Don't look at this wonderfully humorous movie as being unfaithful to the Dumas story, look at it as an entertaining and different version. Oliver Platt is hilarious, and the banter between the four musketeers is wonderful. It's like boys' night out with swords. Most books I like have been poorly transferred to film...this one has only been differently presented. There are several versions of this story available on film. I like all of them except the newest, Crouching Ninja Musketeer, but this Disney version is my favorite.
34 The worst DVD transfer of all time!
I liked this movie on VHS. It is a no brainer. A way to pass an hour or so without trying to think to much into it.
So when the DVD came out I bought it...Big Mistake. I now have the only DVD in a colection of over 400 which doubles as a frisby.
The transfer in letterbox fomat is so bad, that some of the sword scenes look more like they are holding weapons from a 70's vido game, pixelated....

Don't buy this DVD it [bites].

35 Wonderfull Entertainment
The movie is simply a good entertaining for the whole family. The musical bonus is really a nice bonus.. Too bad its only come in wide screen...
36 Plays loose with the book... Still lots of fun
The original novel written by Alexandere` Dumas is basically thrown out the door for this Disney version. It really doesn't follow the book at all, save for the basic plot, and characters. Yet, for me, it is still a good movie. The film has plenty of action, humor, and solid direction for me to recommend the film. The acting is way over the top and there is plenty of scene chewing going on. The camaraderie and the fun factor make it work for me. I should also note that the film doesn't take itself seriously and this allows everyone involved to have a good time in the film and that translates to the viewer. I don't think it would have worked any other way. There have been so many filmed versions of this tale over the years, that every once in a while, its nice to lighten up a bit. If you want to have some fun, and forget your cares, then this film fits the bill. Tim Curry as the villian in the movie and you can't go wrong

The DVD has little in the way of extras. There is a brief production featurette and the "All For One" music video. Despite a few flaws, this is a fine film for the young and old alike. Have fun.

37 Not the best
i used to think this was the best movie in the world..........but I have found ones that go along with the book better, while this, though funny, has almost no connection with the book beyond characters.
38 Amusing!
Yes, they strayed far from the book and it is, in typical Disney fashion, kinda on the cheesy side but still...this is a good movie! It's funny and entertaining. (and Kiefer Sutherland is hot!) Oliver Platt is hilarious as is Tim Curry. No, this won't provoke any deep thoughts, but you'll laugh and be entertained, and that's what it's all about.
39 Swashbuckling fun
I always liked this movie but when watching it recently on HBO I came to realize that it's sort of a Young Guns version of the 3 Musketeers. I'm sort of surprised Emilio Estevez wasn't in it too, lol. Well despite that I still really find it enjoyable, the cast is still a lot of fun. The underrated Kiefer Sustherland (Flatliners, 24) especially is very good, as are Michael Wincott and Tim Curry as the villains. Oliver Platt (Lake Placid, The West Wing) is probably at his most entertaining as well. There's a lot of swashbuckling fun that is bound to entertain you as well. This film is superior to the most recent The Musketeer almost in every way.
40 terrible
this was one of the worst films i have had the misfortune to watch ever!the plot is weak, the actors act like school children and the actual story line has gone far astrey from the real book. all in all it was a complete, boring dissapointment and i suggest that this film should be thrown in the nearest garbage truck.
41 Gagging on Disneyfied version
This is the absolute worst rendition of the Dumas story ever filmed. Especially pathetic are the acting skills, or lack thereof, of the four musketeers themselves. Even worse, if possible, is the sneering, leering Tim Curry in a role he should never been given. Avoid this dog at all costs. See instead, the versions starring real actors such as Reed, Chamberlain, York, Heston, and many others.
42 Get off your high horse people.Geeez
If I see another review from someone saying this is not like the book I will get another ulcer to match the ones I already have. This is just great entertainment.I read the book in high school and again in college. You know what.....great book, great movie and they stand on their own.Disney wasn't trying to make a faithful adaption to Dumas's work. They wanted to make good family fun and they did.Lighten up people.
43 Fun in France
Ok...so you like period pieces and comedies. This is the movie for you. The acting is warm; the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and there's plenty of good comedic dialogue. Bloodless violence and subtle sexual innuendo leaves this a family film fit for any over the age of 8. It is fun. It is escapist. It is entertaining. Not "great film" but a heck of a lot better than a lot in that exalted category.

If, on the other hand, you insist on historical accuracy, slavish adherence to Dumas' masterpiece, and grim permeating darkness, you won't care for this film a bit. Real film critics probably don't like the film...but then they almost never like what I do. The acting isn't crisp; the plot is only vaguely believable. The filming is adequate, but not inspired.

44 Don't Waste Your Time or Money
This has got to be one of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune to have paid to see. I really can't put into words just how horrible it is. It failed on every possible level. The acting was extremely bad, including Tim Curry's pitiful performance. The writing was a travesty. The directing was miserable. Everything about it stank on ice. But I think the thing that I hated most about was the way that they absolutely butchered Dumas' classic story. To call this picture The Three Musketeers is false advertising. The story is NOT the Three Musketeers. Don't waste your time or money on this. Instead, I recommend the fantastic The Three Musketeers/The Four Musketeers with Michael York, Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Christopher Lee, and Raquel Welch. Those two movies are 5 star performances.
45 love this movie(:
As someone who has read the book, this movie was not completly true to the story. But hey its still a great movie!Even though I love the orignal story, this movie rocks!RENT IT.
46 My all time favorite
I LOVE IT! I've watched it about 5 times and I still absolutely love it. It makes me laugh every single time. The Musketeers all totally crack me up (Especially Porthos!), D'Artagnon was just the right mixture of arrogance, innocence, and charm, the cardinal was the perfect charming-but-evil villain, and Rebecca de Morney was an excellant mysterious seductress. There were several great lines and hysterical scenes, and it was obvious that the actors had fun making it. Who can resist a film where the actors are obviously enjoying themselves? It's contagious.
47 Don't waste your time!
This film is a dog. Ok, Tim Curry was entertaining, but don't waste your time. Try Lester's 1974 film of the same name. You wont regret it.
48 Not Your Classic Disney Movie, and not like the Book
I personally love the book, and I was not at all disappointed when I saw this movie. In fact, it was the movie that spurred me to read the book. If you're a bookworm and expect movies to follow the books they are based on, then this is not for you. The only two things that the book and the movie have in common are the character names and the setting. However, when you watch the movie its like reading another version of the book. It's interesting because if you have read the book you still can not predict what is going to happen. The acting is fairly good, not the best I've seen. However, the actors are really cute (especally d'Artagnan). It's a whole new outlook to The Three Musketeers. Watch and enjoy!
49 this is a very funny movie
this so good its not much on the real book but it is so funny that i think it is so good that it makes up for it.
50 this is a very funny movie

51 It's good for certain people
I liked this movie, but that doesn't mean everyone would. It doesn't follow the bokk very well, and the acting isn't quite what one would expect. However, it contains beautiful scenes *one image of birds taking off into the sunset leaps ito mind*. Also, if you love Disney movies, this one should be perfect for you! I loved the adorable characters and the great set and costume designs. I really suggest this movie for younger (about 7-13) audiences and people who don't care if it is consistant with literature. I would give it a B+.
52 So it's not like the book. Who Cares?
This was an action/comedy/romance/history/heaps of other things, complete with an explosion. It did differ greatly from the book, but the movie in itself was fantastic. It had cute actors running around gorgeous countryside and fencing beautifully choreographed duels. The story was like a compact soap opera, and you came away from the movie feeling like you'd just been through it all yourself. If you can't stand good books being corrupted, this is definitely not the film for you, but if you can put that aside, it is a truly enjoyable movie.
53 Horrible....
I suppose that I can't expect a movie with the word "Disney" on it to even pretend to try to follow an original story. But for God's sake! This movie is awful! Why would you pass up such a solid plot such as the book had in favor of the boring thread pushed in this wretched adaption. While Curry gives an above-average performance, the rest of the cast is weak. Sheen looks like a chump (as always), and Chris O'Donnell obviously has no idea of How d'Artangan is supposed to act. This movie is not even worth renting...much less buying. Pass it up!
54 Golly!!
I am a bookworm, and a huge fan of Mr Tim Curry (you should see my locker), two things that legally bound me into the obligation of seeing this movie. I was left disappointed and dismayed. Disney completely butchered the plot line, and the casting was less than perfect.

The only thing that I liked about this movie was the phenominal acting of Mr. Curry, of course. His talent to take the rottenest script and make it bearable is something that all great actors should posess. Unfortunately, even his cool character and all his beliveability came to an end at his demise: He was punched, then he fell off a boat, and "drowned" in obviously shallow water. That was the doing of the writers. Not even Tim Curry could salvage this ending.

Dumas is rolling in his grave at pure mention of this new, Disney brand of nauseating film. I wholly reccomend that, instead of enduring the worst of "Disney Magic," you read the book and watch the more accurate movies, which you will find on a search for "The Three Musketeers." Still, in the midst of all its stupidness, this is a must see for all Tim fans alike.

55 A travesty
This movie stinks, with bells on. It misses at every level: as a swashbuckler, as historical ficton, and most especially as a retelling of the Dumas story. On critic aptly described it as "Young Swords", i.e. a bunch of cool young actors dressed in plumed costumes running around aimlessly and waiving their swords with amateurish enthusiasm. If you want to see how it should be done, see The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers from the 1970s.
56 Campy, but fun
Well, OK. They scrapped the plot, butchered French history, and completely, utterly miscast D'Artagnan.

The whole king and queen being all sweetly in love was pretty nauseating, and the Cardinal's plots positively laughable. I suppose it's a bit much to ask Disney to clarify to kids that a man can be a manipulative, unscrupulous politician and not be *evil.*

But it was kind of amusing, and most of the casting was decent...perhaps in a serious movie, the actors could have done better.

Tim Curry was lovely...no Charleton Heston, but in a better movie he might have rivaled him. Charlie Sheen OK, but his acting was, IMO, forgivable because he looked nice. Kiefer Sutherland great. Michael Wincott...well...;) I plead the Fifth. Rebecca de Mornay fine, but not great. Chris O'Donnell positively nauseating, though IMO not as annoying as Michael York. Give me Gabriel Byrne any day.

57 Not so bad.
Okay, so the movie plot didn't follow the book. At all. Disney's never been good at sticking to the facts, just looks at Pocahontas! Nonetheless, this is a good movie as long as you're not looking for accuracy, just a fun adventure movie. All the actors are great, and I'd recommend this movie to anyone. "All for one, and one for all!" ;)
58 Why bother when the Richard Lester versions are available?
Sad to say, this version is everything you'd expect once it's been Disney-fied. It's very pretty and they hired entertaining actors, but an adult story of love and revenge has turned into pattycakes in pseudo-France. I cannot recommend paying money for this when the Richard Lester-directed version of this story is available. Check it out! (It's the one with Michael York, Christopher Lee, Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch....)
59 best of the best
alright, the movie doesn't follow the book, but that's not a great problem if you wan't to see a great movie(sorry,my English is not so good, because i am an dutch-man) I have seen the movie a fiew weeks ago,and recorded it on a tape. Now i have seen it already 3 times!! Why??because it is an movie whit great action and a nice story. The fights are nice and the stunts are nice,so the movie is nice. Don't argue about a book-story,but buy this movie and see for yourself.....
60 The Three Musketeers
First of all, the actors are have perfectly played these roles. The King and Queen are a bit young looking, but I suppose that it's the times. The plot flows well, with a past for one particular musketeer, and a future for our wanna-be musketeer hero (who, typically, is the hero), and of course, romance. The villain, though, was perhaps my favorite part of all of it, because he was played so evilly and so well. A slight drawback would be, I think, that things move just a bit too quickly, and some scenes and characters don't have enough time to develop. But it is an enjoyable movie, overall.
61 Are they Kidding?
Yep,the actors are kids potraying manly roles. The stars are too young for the role. Even the King is portaryed as a dumbell teen. The movie has a lot of action but does not possess the excitement of the Gene kelly and Chamberlain versions. Chris O'Donnel's heavy American accent immediatley detracts from the realism needed to enjoy this film. D'Artagnan is supposed to be French, you know. A diction coach should have at least tried to make his accent neutral. The costumes are fantastic as well as the scenery, but these aren't sufficient to make the film memorable. The swordfight choreography stinks, but of course, nothing can top Gene Kelly's classic swordplay. The only redeeming factor is Tim Curry's performance as Richelieu. He definitley did Vincent Price one better. I saw the film on screen and on video, and during both occasion, I dozed off during the supposedly climactic fight sequences. I don't recommend that you keep a copy of this version. It is best seen once. However, see first Gene Kelly's and Van Heflin's version of the Musketeers to compare the MGM classic with this Disney ho-hum version.
62 Wonderful film!
Okay, okay.....so the movie doesn't follow the book.....the costumes and hair are not exactly the best.....the plot is not what I would consider ingenius....but WHO CARES! This is one of my alltime favorite movies. I love the story and the characters. I think Aramis was one of the best roles that Charlie Sheen has ever played. Oliver Platt is the most entertaining as Porthos, with his "Queen of America" and "Tsarina of Tokyo." Keifer Sutherland's Athos can sometimes be hard to believe, but he pulled it off. Gabrielle Anwar was lovely as Anne, but the king was almost as pretty is she is. Tim Curry plays the bad guy perfectly, even if he is a little unbelievable. I love Porthos and his never ending supply of little weapons. The movie is full of some of the best one-liners I have ever heard. Basically, if you want the real story, read the book. If you want a fun and entertaining "adaption," watch this.
63 Hugh O'Conor is NOT dead!
Need to clear this up right now. In an earlier review, someone laments the suicide of Irish actor Hugh O'Conor, who plays King Louis in this film, obviously confusing him with Hugh O'Connor, son of actor Carrol O'Connor. Hugh is alive and well and working on a film in France. Okay.

Now, about this movie. If you enjoy endearingly bad movies, then you'll love this one. Please, read a few of the other reviews that point out the flaws of this movie and how it strays from the novel. They are quite right.

It really is a quite dismal Disney adaptation saved by some inspired casting. What is remarkably funny now, but may not be in another ten or twenty years, is the casting of Charlie Sheen as Aramis, the womanizing-former priest musketeer; Keifer Sutherland as Athos, the drunken, wronged husband of the Countess de Winter (Rebecca de Mornay in enough black eyeliner to start her own cosmetics line); and an over-the-top performance by Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu. Curry's Cardinal is meant to be lusting after the queen, but is so obviously more interested in the far more beautiful King Louis (marvelous Irish actor Hugh O'Conor in an unfortunate wig). The royal couples' clothes fit so badly and look so cheesy, one wonders if there was such a thing as Le K'Marte in 17th century France.

Put your feet up and your Dumas under the sofa and enjoy.

64 This is a terrible re-make of a wonderful story
This film is terrible! Have the scriptwriters even read the book! It's as if all they have bothered to research is 'All for one and one for all' - which is repeated again and again (even though it is in fact the wrong way round!) There are so many bits missed out so many vital parts of the plot - (there is no diamond studs episode, Constance survives etc) and so many inventions (musketeers disbanded, Rochefort as an ex-musketeer murdering D'artagnan's father etc) The characters are mostly miscasted - mainly because they are all about 10 years younger than they ought to be (or 30 years younger in the case of the king). The are a few comic lines from the Three Musketeers who do their best in an awful movie, and Tim Curry is quite evil but unfortunately has one awful line after another which completely undercut his leering and evil grins. Rebecca DeMournay gives a pretty flat performance as Milady but this is simply because of the appalling script. In most cases the actors are trying their best but with such a film they are doomed to failure. I understand that this is Disney and they want to make a film that children will enjoy that has action and adventure etc. However I fail to see why they have to ruin a masterpiece of a story in order to achieve their aim. As a child I adored the 1949 version with Gene Kelly so there is no reason why the plot has to be changed so much for children to enjoy it. Dogtanian was a brilliant childrens cartoon of the three musketeers which left all of the characters and storyline intact - Why does Disney have to ruin it? It is not even as if the true spirit and honour of the Muskteers and what they stand for, comes across successfully. Having every other character 'All-for-one-ing' all the way through is not the same thing at all. Having a lecherous Cardinal who is more interested in sex than anything else is hardly ideal for a children's film anyway. And what is all that rubbish about the Cardinal inheriting the throne! What sort of rules of succession did Hollywood think existed in France? Children might enjoy this film but I will never show it to mine. Unless of course like me they watch it for a laugh (at it rather than with it) and enjoy nit-picking like I have done. The 2 stars I gave it are merely an indication of how hilariously bad I thought it was.
65 Awesome
O.k. so it doesn't exactly refer to the book, but if you think about it most movies/DVD don't follow the storyline correctly. Be that as it may the acting was great, the plot was good, and the scenery was excellent. Yes, it was Disney and they have a way about not telling the whole truth, but it's funny, action-packed, and most of all, the kids and the family enjoyed it. It was a well made movie and it was definetly one I added to my collection.
66 A good movie if you did not read the book
As the reviewer of the day said, this movie is nothing like the book, but that does not mean that it is not entertaining. I saw the movie before I read the book, and found it very funny and exciting with ample swashbuckling scenes. After I read the book, I winced whenever I heard Chris O'Donnell speak with an American accent. His impulsive and nature seemed out of place as well (his character was supposed to be the smartest of the group). I would recommend this movie for children who enjoy an adventure, or those who have not read the book, otherwise you might not like it due to its inaccuracies.
67 all for one and more for me
there are a ton of things wrong with this movie, but they have all been covered in reviews below. i will make a couple of observations. it does not bother me that they did their own story, only that they changed the characters motivations so much that they very detracted from the book. the script suffers terribly and alot of the time the movie feels like a fluffy version lacking real direction. the movies saving grace is some funny lines, swordplay and wincott as rochefort. his proformance of the cardinals number 1 henchman is worth watching the movie for again and again. a very sinister protrayal. it is an okay action film which has its moments. but dont go in expecting it to be a serious attempt at telling dumas tale.
68 ok!
If you think about it...It's a good Kids movie. It doesn't show right or wrong, It's nothing like The book, it has nothing to do with any of the other movies, The 3 Musketeers cheat when they fence, D'Artagnan's a punk.....What am I saying? Well, it's a good laugh! Maybe you could do Mst3k over it!

To say a good thing about it, the acting is ok.

69 A Great Movie
A Hillarious film. Wonderful for the whole family.Great acting, and music.
70 the three muskteers
it's the best! a nice famly move
71 Poor Alexandre is spinning in his grave...
You have to pity Alexandre Dumas. Just because he has been dead for about 150 years, movie people seem to think that it is OK to completely, thoroughly and decisively ruin his brilliant novels.

They one by one ruin each of the four heroes of the Three Musketeers. D'Artagnan is portrayed as a nice 90's kid in a bad wig who, golly gosh gee, just wants to be a hero. He wanted to be hero in the book too but he wasn't so cloying about it. Athos is an angst ridden Gen-Xer. When he is not tossing his hair dramatically, he is making eyes as Milady. Porthos is your typical 90's comedy relief, just a nice fun guy. Aramis is a lecherous weirdo. Honestly, do you believe for one second that this guy is serious about religion? In the book, he was deadly serious. He kept his love affairs discreet too, thank heaven.

The movie is wraught with cliches. The escape secen is lifted from Bill & Ted's Excellant Adventure if you can believe it. Watch them back to back and see for yourself! The dialogue is cringe inducing. The costumes are inaccurate. Check out the tiny braid on Milady, so early 90s! Most of the actors are years too old. As I recall, the oldest of the lot was Athos in his late 20's, thirty at most.

Read the review below for a list of innaccuracies. All I can say is, kids, if you need to write a book report on the 3 Musketeers, this movie will make you flunk it! Better just read the book. All this movie will give you is an education in early 90s pop culture

72 The Death of a Classic
I really can't stand it that Disney has the power to take classics like the Three Musketeers or the Hunchback of Notre Dame and change them around so as to be unrecognizable. The book upon which this movie is allegedly based is wonderful, and the movie, to put it simply, isn't.

The movie has the same basic plot, but it has been turned into a typical Disney slapstick. Although the jokes are often relatively funny and the actors are obviously having fun with themselves, it really doesn't fit in the plot. The story of the book is also incredibly simplified, and the main characters have been given typical "hero" makeovers. Still, the swordfights aren't horrible, and Curry is great as a sadistic, sarcastic Richelieu.

If you enjoy fun, light adventure movies, then this is a good choice, but if you're looking for a solid adaptation of Dumas' classic novel, look elsewhere.

73 (promises to be) a timeless classic !
This is a very entertaining and wholesome swashbuckling adventure-comedy which promises to entertain viewers both young and old. I remember watching this when it first came out in theaters, and I ordered the DVD as soon as it became available. Try watching this and "The Man in the Iron Mask" immediately after to get a feeling of "continuity" of sorts as well as an interesting juxtaposition the two films' respective interpretations of Aramis, Porthos, Athos and Dartagnan.

I'm glad that more recent DVD releases such as this one are getting more and more "pumped up" (e.g. with added features such as featurettes, music videos and the like). Pretty soon (hopefully) we might be seeing standard-fare features such as DTS sound and interactive / on-screen bells and whistles (ala Matrix!). In a nutshell : BUY THIS! It's worth it...

74 I love this movie!
Oh, this movie is so cool! I love it! It's funny, and of course has action and adventure in it! Oh, it's the best!
75 Loved it
I found this movie very entertaining... Oliver Platt (Porthos) provided some great laughs. Charlie Sheen (Aramis) was one of the nice looking ones. Kiefer Sutherland (Athos) could have acted a bit more bitter... but he did an over good job. Chris O'Donnel (D'Artgnan) no. I don't think he took to this part well at all. I agree with several other reviewers. He turned it into mush. Tim Curry (Car. Richeliu) LOVED HIM! He played that part two ways to the director... funny or scary/serious. The director wanted to go for the funny way, mainly because everyone else in the cast would be as well. I would have loved to have seen him play it serious. Rebecca DeMornay( ?) was quite good as a seductress. The man w/the patch (can't remember name) did fairly well. Wasn't the best performance, but wasn't mush either. I give this film only four stars, mainly because of Chris O'Donnel's performance. No,it didn't stay true to the book, but I liked it anyways.
76 Quite unusual interpertation, but very entertaining
Have you read classic novel by A. Duma before? FROGET ABOUT IT. This movie is very different in all aspects from any of the books of the famous trilogy. Except for the names of the characters and approximate time of the story. Nevertheless this movie has some touch of genius that makes it a masterpiece. This is more a touchy and entertaining fairy tale where good always will won.
77 Michael Wincott and Oliver Platt get the stars
Otherwise I would have definitely put no stars at all next to this film. Awful! Just awful! The only reason I own this (mis)interpretation of the greatest adventure series in the world is because Michael is in it. And even his character is all wrong! Whoever heard of Rochefort having only one eye? Well, yeah, this is a common American view of it... Oliver Platt is the only other saving grace as Porthos. Chris O'Donnell is horrible as one of the coolest characters in literature. And Charlie Sheen as Aramis? Who cast this thing? Oh, and how the story was botched... Please, if you love the book, don't waste your time with this film!
78 The FUNNIEST movie ever!
I saw this movie for the first time last year and have watched it religiously ever since. It is hilarious! Oliver Platt is the best actor! The best part is when Dartanyon is about to be executed and the weirdo says "don't lose your head!" :o) You have to see it. I promise it wont be a waste of time.
79 An Absolute MUST SEE!!!
Since my World Geography teacher doesn't like to actually teach us, he frequently allows us to watch movies as long as they're geography related (hehe). Well...last week he let us watch The Three Musketeers!!!! I was so excited because I had seen it before and knew it was good, but it was so much better the second time around. Unlike the documentaries we watch, this truly kept a group of 9th graders on the edge of their seats. No one would have guessed it was from Disney. I'm asking for the video for my birthday because it is one of the best!!!!! If you like action, mystery, drama, romance, comedy, or historic movies you must see this!!!!!!!!!
80 One of the best movies ever
This is one of the best adaptations of the Dumas story I have ever seen. Execelent performances by nearly all actors/esses. I would have given Oscars to this movie!
81 Charlie Sheen is terrific
I have always been a fan of Charlie Sheen but I loved him in this movie! The casting of the 3 musketeers (Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Sheen) was excellent. Also I thought Tim Curry did great as the Cardinal. It is an all around entertaining version with 4 great actors. It could not have been cast better.
82 Unlike the book, unlike history
The movie on its own isn't bad. I'll admit that I've watched it several times and I'm always entertained. But I'm greatly annoyed by a couple of things. One is that about the only thing the movie has in common with the book is the same characters. I could even forgive that, at least somewhat, because movies always change the book. But the movie give a completely misleading view of French history. Richelieu was not evil, and he certainly would never try to kill the king. Even if that somehow happened, it wouldn't make him the next king! Louis had a brother and plenty of other relatives who would have been next in line for the throne. This was the aspect of the movie that bothered me the most. Cardinal Richelieu was a complex human being, and reducing him to a one-dimensional villain is a travesty.
83 One of my favorites
I enjoy clean movies and although this one has sonme definite incinuations (Richelu trying to seduce the queen) it maintains a pretty high, though not 100%, purity. No bedroom scenes (which I think the man in the iron mask could have done without) If you want clean this is much better than the man in the iron mask. Simply compare the Porthos's!! this movie's porthos is MUCH more to my taste (as I said I like my movies clean) but was Chris O'donnel supposed to be the one intended for viewers (girls) to drool over? If so, mark missed. Charlie Sheen was so good looking in this movie, it wasn't funny. He was the best at romanticising as well. And who can forget when his beautiful theology student starts kissing him in the middle of a lesson!! Aramis: I'm flattered madam, but I am here to tutor you in theology woman: I'm sorry, but when you were talking about original sin I became impassioned and couldn't help myself. It won't happen again. Please continue. Aramis:(changing his mind) Well.... there's nothing unholy about these emotions... (more passionate kissing) (pounding on door) woman: My husband! Aramis: You're Married?!!! woman: Yes I'm married Aramis:We must pray for our sins. (door breaks open and angry husband fires at Aramis, who barely dodges the bullet Aramis: On second thought, God's aweful busy I think he was the best actor in the movie, and definitely the best looking. Well, Porthos was pretty funny too. Anyway, great movie SEE IT
84 Total slaughter of a truly great book
Never have I seen such a outrageous disregard for the orginal plotline than in this movie. Except for about one scene, the only thing the same between the book and movie is the name. The musketeers were never disbanded, the Cardinal never tried to kill the king, the queen did not really love the king but was in love with the Duke of Buckingham, D'Artagnan's father was not dead, Milady was not going to England to get Buckingham to sign a treaty, she was going to assassinate him, Constance had a much greater role in the story, the line 'All for one, and one for all' was used once during the book and was said by D'Artagnan instead of any of the musketeers, Athos was much more bitter towards Milady, I could go on for hours(but I'll spare you the ranting). Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. It was funny and entertaining and I enjoyed it. But that Disney (who is well known for screwing up original stories) would even try to pass it off under the same name while ignoring the book entirely is practically a mockery to Dumas. If you want a movie that follows the plot, try 1973's version, which stays true to it throughout.
85 ...almost perfect....
as a huge fan of alexander dumas' creation,i often get offended at the casting choices for his writings...(gene kelly?...hello?)....in fact, my lack of a fifth star rating is only due to the lack of a fifth star in the role of D'Artagnan. once again, chris o'donnell has taken a vibrant character and turned him into mush. why on earth does he keep getting these types of roles. the only "roles" he should be getting are hamburger rolls at burger king...(make that mcdonalds...i actually like burger king!)....but besides, and in spite of, his disasterous performance, this movie is by far the finest adaptation yet, with keifer sutherland as the sturdy, but broken athos, charlie sheen as the musketeer who is as good with the lord as he is with his sword, aramis, and of course, tim curry, who never lets me down, but has indeed found his character as cardinal richeleu...but the surprise in this package is the brilliant oliver platt who takes his character, porthos, from an excessive creation and creates a living human being, full of life. it is truly a joy to see a twentieth cetury actor capture the feel of a period piece, and the "three" musketeers do just that.Another current dumas vehicle, "the man in the iron mask",falls short in that area, except that gabriel byrne has finally brought some dignity to d'artagnan, and that the brilliant jeremy irons extends sheen's performance of aramis, to make the two pieces quite complimentary. even if you've been burned by "musketeer" movies before, fear not...all for one and one for all....
86 Curry Steals The Show From His Younger Co-Stars...
This is a rollicking, non-stop, action-filled delight! And while Sutherland, Sheen, O'Donnell, Platt - and especially DeMornay - are good, it's Tim Curry's sly, seductive turn as the evil Cardinal that fleshes out the story and offers the most memorable character. Curry is a mesmerizing, masterful actor, and this role suits him perfectly. Don't miss it!
87 Tim Curry and Rebecca DeMornay's scene was fantastic!!!!!
There scene together is my favorite part of the movie. Her joke,"With a flick of my wrist I can change your religion." Is worth the purchase price. Tim Curry as the Cardinal is scary one momment funny the next. This film is not to missed!!!
88 God I love this movie!
Seen this movie?!?! Understatement of the year! I have this movie memorized!! The late Hugh O'Connor was very cute in this movie. I know every line by heart. Full of action, comedy and fun. Two of my favorite lines are "On second thought God's often busy" and "God I love my work." It makes me so sad that an actor (Hugh) so young, beautiful an talented would just take his life like that.
89 A totally wonderful and entertaining movie!
This is the best Musketeer movie that has been made in my opinion. Awesome cast and very funny. Tim Curry Rocks! The plot is completely inaccurate compared to the book(except for some minor parts), which usually really bothers me when movies are adapted from books, but this one is so good I didn't even care about that. I whole heartedly reccomend this movie.
90 A great movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read the book (The Three Musketeers) and I loved it! This is just about as good! This is a really great movie!
91 Great !!
NON-STOP ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMEN
92 awesome!
This movie is totally action packed with lots of funny scenes. It has a little bit of romance plus some irony. It's totally cool, in my opinion. Sutherland, Sheen, O'Donnell, Platt, and Curry are great in their places as Athos, Aramis, D'Artagnan, Porthos, and Richelieu. I sugest that if you haven't seen it already, you see it because it'll give you an awesome adventure you'll never forget. I know I can't forget it!
93 Great! Action and Comedy!
I first saw this movie when I figured out Tim Curry was in it (Cardinal Richeliu). It has the right blend of action, and comedy, which is really great, considered that other 3Musketeers movies I've seen are so serious all the time. Definitely a buying item!
94 Overall, a pretty good film.
I would have to say that this movie was one of the best rendering of Dumas's book. The cast was well done on some basis, though I would have to say that they could have cast d'Artagnan with a better actor than Chris O'Donnell. Not that I have anything agianst him, but he's not really how I see d'Artagnan. Keifer Sutherland did a fabulous job as Athos though he should have been more ruthless toward Milady de Winter as he was in the book. Charlie Sheen was a well-rounded Aramis but could have been more careless, and Oliver Platt was a great Porthos.
95 Very funny and sexy!
I love a Charlie Sheen movie and I knew this movie was going to be a hit and it was. The movie a full of action, adventure, comedy, and sexy leading men. Since seeing the movie i have watch it over and over again and will continue to doing so.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a rigged demo.

In the beginning there was nothing. And the Lord said "Let There Be Light!"
And still there was nothing, but at least now you could see it.
