Rely on it when you're on the road and savor its performance at home: Toshiba's SD-P2600 DVD-Video/DVD-Audio portable DVD player is distinguished by its sleek appearance, 8.9-inch polysilicon widescreen display, and high-resolution 1,024 x 600-pixel image. The TFT (thin-film-transistor) active-matrix display delivers film-like images rich in detail, color resolution, and contrast.

Besides media playback versatility--it handles everything from DVD-Video to DVD-R, VCD, MP3/WMA CD, and a host of image formats--the SD-P2600 offers Toshiba's ColorStream PRO progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and employs an 10-bit, 54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter to cement its guarantee of stellar image quality. A sleek, credit-card-sized remote control simplifies operation.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The SD-P2600 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection (Digital Cinema Progressive). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Further, a Toshiba feature called Direct Digital Solution sends a DVD's video information to the LCD driver directly from the unit's MPEG decoder in its original digital form, bypassing unnecessary digital-to-analog conversion steps to deliver the best picture quality possible.

Toshiba's digital photo viewer displays images right on your television in a variety of popular formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Photo CD, as well as standard JPEG files--there's even a Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card slot to further simplify viewing. An onscreen display walks you through the process of making your own slideshows, in which you can preset the viewing time of each slide as well as zoom, rotate, and pan each photo.

Leading-edge 24-bit/192 kHz digital-analog converters from Analog Devices delivers exceptional 2-channel DVD-Audio frequency response and dynamic range. DVD-Audio discs deliver high-resolution audio, capturing and reproducing all of the nuances of the original performance and offering high-resolution surround sound as well as stereo. (DVD-Audio resolution is available through the analog audio outputs only.)

A pair of built-in headphone jacks let you watch or listen with a partner, while Spatializer N-2-2 ULTRA and Natural Headphone virtual surround sound algorithms simulate surround through 2 speakers or 1 set of headphones. Built-in stereo speakers grant headphone-free listening through high-efficiency titanium drivers in bass-reflex enclosures for more full-bodied sound than typical portables produce.

The SD-P2600 passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its coaxial-type digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The supplied lithium-ion battery blends seamlessly with the player's cosmetic profile and offers around 3.5 hours of uninterrupted movie or music entertainment. The battery also charges quickly, in around 3 hours.

What's in the Box

1 terrible

2 Bad, Bad, Bad Supplier
No Stars would be better. My husband bought me this unit for Christmas. This was his first online shopping experience and he nor I will ever shop from Office Depot, Tech Depot etc..ever again! You think you are buying from Office Depot when your item get shipped from Tech Depot who then denies that they are the same company when you call them. It is impossible to know ahead of time but, they will not return ANY Toshiba products even if they are defective. They did apoligize that Amazon has an incorrect return policy posted on their site.....go figure! Do not purchase from them unless you want absolutely NO support.
3 Cool toy but limited
After reading all the positive reviews, I decided to buy this model instead of the 2700 (although there appears to be very little difference between the two). Upon opening the box and testing the unit, I immediately noticed a 'hung' pixel in the upper left of the screen. It stays lit (white) on many scenes and becomes annoying at times. I was told that this is not uncommon and that another unit may exhibit a similar flaw.

The picture is very vivid once you get the proper alignment between yourself and the screen. Any movement up or down will necessitate a change in the screen angle to keep the picture quality the same. So, if you watch it from your lap in bed as I do, this may take some getting used to. Also, there are no color or picture adjustments that would allow you to customize the output to suit your tastes. I found this very limiting because some scenes are just too dark and the 4-way brightness adjustment is just not enough to get it right.

As far as the sound is concerned, the speakers are very weak and offer virtually no bass whatsoever (even though they are advertised as bass reflex). Headphones add a lot, but I also noticed quite a bit of distortion. Again, there are no sound controls that would otherwise give you control over this characteristic.

So, although others love this model, I cannot give it super high marks. Oh yes, the battery works fine and it has a remote that you need for many of the 'features', which seems ridiculous for a portable. I guess if you plan to use it to drive your home theater then the remote makes more sense, even though this model doesn't.

At $299 this would be a great value. Above that, it's average at best.

4 Poor quality player for price!
Ok....I read all reviews about the 2600 before I bought it and was really looking forward to purchasing a high quality machine. Boy was I disappointed. The picture is heads above the other portable DVD's I have looked at, there's no argument about that. I find fault with this machine, in that, to change cinema screens you have to stop the machine. I hooked the player up to my television and the Video out, which is NOT seperate from the audio, (you have one plug in to the AV and three plugs going to audio and video)did not work. I hooked my daughters Polaroid DVD player up and it worked flawlessly! My Toshiba costs over twice what I paid for her's. Last, the navigation of the Toshiba is very hard to manuever around. They should have made things a lot simpler to get around this machine. I was really disappointed in this product. I sent it back immedietely.
5 Not a good present!
I got it in the September for my husband as a wedding present and the month later it started skipping parts of the movie, or would not start the movie at all, you would have to turn it off and turn it back on. And later the screen would not show any picture, you can listen to the sound of the movie, but not watch it.
Since it has been over 3 months from the day I bought it Amazon would not let me return it.
Thank you Amazon and Toshiba for making my wedding gift the worse gift ever!
This product sucks!

6 Polysilicon TFT is much better than amorphous TFT
Most of the TFT LCD is in a precise sense "amorphous silicon TFT LCD". This portable player uses "low temperature polysilicon TFT LCD" that is in principle much better in term of response time, contrast, and color reproductivity as mobility of electron is much faster. Toshiba is not only manufacturing DVD players but also is one of a few companies that can produce mid size LTPS (low temperature poly silicon) TFT in Asia.
I recommend this portable DVD as qualitywise this is in principle much better than others since other portable DVD players do not use polisilicon TFT yet. It seems that good impressions of other reviewers are coming from this aspect. There is a guaranteed and electro-technological reason why this is better than others.

7 Question
I bought this based on the reviews that I read here and I was not disappointed. There were quite a few more parts than I expected in the box, but it was good once I sorted them out.

Question: On the front of the box (and also any other pictures I've seen) - they show the picture on the screen going all the way from top to bottm and side to side. In other words - no horizontal or vertical gray bars.

I've tried all different settings to try and get the bars to go away with no luck. When I play a widescreen - the bars are top and bottom. When I play a full screen - the bars are left and right.

Is this normal or do I have a defective unit? Or is there a way to change it that I just can't figure out? I called customer service and they were unhelpful.

If you bought this, could you please let me know if yours does the same? Thanks!

CJ
8 Awesome DVD Player but I have a question
Overall Fantastic Player!!

Is there a way to hook up a MiniDV camcorder to the player? How about an Xbox? If so What cables would I need.
9 Best Player For The Money
I looked around for about a month before I made my purchase of the Toshiba. There are a lot of players out there but after reading all the reviews and going to the stores to see them work the Toshiba was hands down the best for the money. Samsung was a close second but what I liked was that the picture on the Toshiba was brighter and sharper. The Toshiba also has a better angle so two people can watch a movie together with not having to sit on top of each other. The sound is great and with the head phones on you really could hear the surrond sound. When I was done buying my case , ear phones and airplane adapter it cost me a little more but well worth it. I really can't see why you would want to go any larger and spend more money because they are getting to the point that for a couple hundred more you can get a laptop. You will not be disapointed with this player.
10 Worth the money.
I just want to say that after researching portable DVD players for about 3 months and ALMOST buying a lesser priced machine (Panasonic LS-50), I am so glad that I didn't. I read through a few of the reviews for the Toshiba 2600 and loved the fact that the screen size was larger than 7", not a bad word could be found about it. Unlike the other machine which had many complaints about the battery life. Bottom line, spend the extra money, it's well worth it. I got mine for ($432 out the door)
11 Superb player!
Can't find any faults with this player. Very versatile re: the various formats it will play. Rugged construction. Excellent ease of use. BEAUTIFUL picture! Comes with cigarette lighter adapater, 3.5 hour rechargeable battery, A/V cables that allow you to connect to a television. Pretty fair viewing angle. 90 degrees is best of course but can go to about 45 degrees without loss of clarity and brightness. A little on the expensive side but it's worth it.
12 7 days & 1,200 miles
I used the Toshiba for a 7 day, 1200 mile road trip recently with two 10 year old kids, no problems -- the player worked great. Played all of our DVDs, only once did the player skip over some rough road. The two headphone jacks are great, I purchased headphones at Radio Shack, $10 each. In addition to the car, the DVD was very handy when staying at the hotels (there's usually not much on local TV). The battery life was not a problem, usually about 2.5 hrs.

This DVD player was $530 (w/tax), but worth the extra $150-200 it to get the larger 9" screen. I previously purchased (on Amazon) a 7" player, but the 7" screen is just too small. Also, I do recommend purchasing the Targus DVD401 Vehicle Portable DVD case.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and can recommend the product.

13 Resume play after shut down
I would like to comment on a couple reviews regarding play after shut down. All you need to do is pause the movie you are watching and then stop it. You will then be able to continue in the same spot once the power is turned back on.
14 ONE OF THE BEST PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS ON THE MARKET!
The Toshiba SD-P2600 is by far the best DvD player on the market at under $500(Sug 699.99), It is loaded with features, Progressive Scan, SD/MMC Card Slot, 8.9 inch screen, Remote Control Anti-Skip & Car Cord Adapter, and much much more.... Car Cord Adapter is to short.
It comes with a 3 1/2 Hour battery, but I got 3 hours 50 mins wow! the built in Speakers go louder then most Portable DvD Players, But that is not saying a lot, get some Sennheiser Headphones or Earbugs, and or some Portable Speakers or Pc Speakers like Creative Labs SBS 350 2.1 just plug into one of the 2 Headphone Output Jacks, and you will have a Kick A_S System!
15 Worth every penny
I haven't had my player for too long but i am marveled at it's clarity. The progressive scan feature makes most of my dvd's stand out even more. Plus the fact that you can hook it up to a HDTV or any other kind adds more versatility because it can be your main dvd player for your place. The sound quality is above average with four ways to customize your listening experience. There are many features that add to it's personality. The most obvious feature about this dvd player is the screen size. At 8.9 inches you can watch movies at greater distances. Which means more people can watch at the same time without being huddled as if around a camp fire. I've used my friends smaller screens and when they saw this one they were in awe. I highly recommend this player.
16 Excellent value at <500
You may have seen the no-name brands the big chain stores -- and they may be a good value if you just plan on handing the player to the kids in the car. But if you care at all about sound and video quality, you should at least check out this unit. The difference in quality is pretty significant.

Video: No comparison. The video on this unit is really sharp and colorful. The 'Mintek' brand 10" unit is larger, but much less sharp.

Sound: Again, this unit is the clear winner. At max volume the kids complained and asked to have it turned down. The dialog and higher freqency effects and music remain clear through the entire volume range. Bass is absent, but that is acceptable to me on a unit this small.

Usability: Digital controls for the most common features (volume, power and navigation). On-screen menu kicks the daylights out of the Mintek unit and is available without using the remote. The Toshiba is faster on power-up and navigation.

Build Quality: This is probably a wash. The Mintek unit uses analog switches for volume and power, and sounds like a washing machine when it spins up the drive. The Toshiba is quieter on power-up, but both settle down when actually playing the movie. Both feel like they would last 10 seconds in the hands of my two year old, but should hold up pretty well with moderate care.

I dont know about in-car use, but I would guess that would be a function of how messed up your disks and road surface are. Hope this helps.

17 Good for car travel and the money
Pros: Includes remote control, car adapter, 2hr-battery. Large screen with bright colors, high pixel count.

Cons: Max volume low without headphones, Cannot play some disks, Disk spinner noisy, Short car adapter cord.

The light, slender, Toshiba 2600 in May 04 enchanted our kids during our drive from Virginia to Florida, and back. The 2600 came with everything in the box including a car adapter. The two headphone jacks gave plenty of volume for the twin's headphones, which I bought separately.
*The 2600 had great colors and plenty of detail and a passenger in the front seat could easily reach the volume and fast-forward controls on the unit.

Unfortunately, the 2600 has some drawbacks. The car adapter cord was so short that going from the dash to the unit hanging off the front seats was a bit of stretch.
*Without the headphones, max volume was audible but not loud, while highway driving.
*The 2600 could play only about 30% of the DVD's while highway driving. In the house, however, the 2600 played all ten of our children's DVD's except for a cheap Chinese copy of Lady and the Trap, which worked in my $75 non-portable DVD player.

18 beautiful picture, but expensive
I went shopping for a portable DVD player and the store I went to had about 14 different portable DVD players plugged into the same video feed playing The Lord of the Rings DVD. This portable DVD player blew all its competitors out of the water - including the two Panasonic models I came to look at. None of them had a picture that could compare to this one. The colors are rich and the black is as dark as I have ever seen. The sound produced by the external speakers is pretty good too, the movie is sometimes hard to hear in a noisy vehicle so headphones may be required on a road trip. Two headphone jacks are on the side of the unit. I have not experienced any problems with viewing angle when watching a movie with two people with the player inbetween us.
19 Great for the price!
The SD-P2600 is a great model for its reasonable price (these portable players were over $1000 dollars just months ago). I think companies like Toshiba, Panasonic and Sharp were unable to really compete with DVD-capable laptops, so they basically stopped improving their portable players. For that reason, the SD-P2600 is virtually the same as the second generation SD-P2500, and only a couple steps ahead of the SD-P2000 (which can be found for a couple hundred less). Being a videophile and portable dvd player fan, I borrowed the SD-P2600 and took it on my trip to Europe.

The battery was great, lasting about two movies, and I was able to charge it a few times (with my power inverter). I saw a couple films on the airplane as well, although it was awkward when weirdos passed by giving strange looks. Looks which made me wonder what exactly was on their minds. Was in envy? Envy for my good fortune, for my immersion in the film at hand? Or was it contempt, 'who does this guy think he is?' they wonder. Nope, it was appall as they stared upon the R-rated film I was viewing, which just so happened to be in the middle of a nude scene.

The picture quality is good, but not outstanding. It's better than any Panasonic or Sharp models, for sure, but the viewing angle is very limited, and there are just too many tweaking controls. I was unable to find a perfect, comfortable setting when tweaking the picture, always having to change it with every movie. While better than its competitors in picture, and great for the average consumor, the 2600 isn't really up to my high standards for video. I don't expect a theater-like presentation (can reserve that for HD-DVD players of the future), but at least it can be sharper; clearer than a laptop's image.

Overall, I definately recommend it to the average consumor, but to those who are looking for more, I'd say look elsewhere. I'm dissapointed that Portable DVD Players aren't evolving or progressing at all. I ended up giving back the Toshiba SD-P2600 with no remorse. I'm very happy with my first generation Toshiba SD-P1000 (which sports the best picture quality of any player out there), but these days I find the batteries dying, with no suitable successor. What did King Lear do? What could he do? Could he settle for less? I guess a laptop is in my future, unless the industry shapes up.

20 GREAT AUDIO/VIDEO EXPERIENCE
Turn it on, plug in the headphones, and you'll find yourself completely immersed.

I can't imagine a better picture--great colors, not grainy at all, really nothing to distract you from the DVD you are watching.

The audio is almost unbelievable. I have a nice but not-to-expensive pair of Sony headphones attached and the sound is better than any movie theater or home system I have ever heard.

As to the finer points, like having to start over after a power shutdown, I really can't find fault with the machine. Once you learn to use the navigation button, you can do pretty much anything you want without losing your place or shutting down the power. Yes, if you turn the unit off you have to find your place again, but that takes less than a minute and then you are back to a really fine experience.

I have owned the 2600 for about a month and have not had any problems at all. Easy recharge, lightweight, just the right screen size for up-close viewing, and lots of features and options.

If this isn't a five star piece of equipment, I don't know what is!

21 great player...great price!
best player going. excellent picture (progesive scan!) good battery life. sleek, good looking unit.
22 Beautiful
Awesome unit. Black levels are excellent and contrat is a thing of beauty. Battery life on the unit is about 2 full movies and the ease of use I give it a 9 out of 10. This is the best player on the market.
23 Very disappointing player
This player is advertised and priced as a top-of-the-line model. Unfortunately, the player has two major flaws.

First, the high resolution screen (1024x768) is very disappointing. The viewing angle is very narrow. The black level is awful (grey is about the best you can hope for). And finally, the contrast is either too high (so whites appear washed-out) or too low (so dark scenes lose all detail).

Second, the player does not remember where you stopped after a power-off. This means that if you watch one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation a day, each time you turn the player on you will have to sit through the irritating intro and FBI warning (which, of course, you cannot fast-forward past).

The price and the high-resolution screen may make you think this player is top-quality. It is not worth the money.
