An impressive update of the Toshiba, e740, the e755 offers better display, faster processor speed, and more memory, plus wireless capability and a host of multimedia features.
Memory
The e755 has 64 MB of RAM and 32 MB ROM, plus a 32 MB Flash for an impressive total of 128 MB of built-in memory. The e755's Flash disk can easily be used to store applications and data that will then survive a hard reset, making it an ideal resource for backing up your most important information.
Controls and Casing
The front of the unit has four application buttons and a five-way directional pad. On the left side is the "record" button for audio input (the mic is on the top of the unit) to make it easy to record voice notes), a scroll wheel, and the infrared port. On the top there are two expansion slots (for Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards), stylus holder, stereo headphone port, power button, and and two LEDs (for the battery, alarms, and wireless communications). On the bottom of the unit are two switches (one to turn on and off the wireless radio and the other to turn on and off the battery), plus the DC-in socket and the cradle connection port.
Applications
Built-in advanced applications include IA Presenter, IA Mirror, ArcSoft PhotoBase software for viewing and editing images, and a data backup app.
Processor
The e755 uses Intel's PXA255 XScale-based processor, operating at 400Mhz, which is able to launch applications an display lists with blazing speed launch quickly. You can also adjust the CPU's speed down to extend battery life.
Display
The e755 has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, and a 16-bit, 64,000 colors display for crisp image viewing on its 3.8" transflective screen.
Multimedia
The e755 can play MP3s, either through the front-mounted speaker or the 3.5 mm stereo jack, and also play videos using Windows Media Player 8.5 for Pocket PC.
Communications
There is an integrated 802.11b radio, turned on with a switch at the bottom of the unit. You can easily connect to a wireless LAN or to a T-Mobile Wi-Fi network. Included also is Wireless LAN Utility software to make it easy to connect to wireless networks, and to create and retain profiles for different networks.
Expansion
The e755 comes with two expansion slots: There's a Compact Flash Type II slot and a Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard slot capable of SDIO. There is also an Expansion Pack that clips to the bottom of the unit, and provides a USB port and a standard 15-pin RGB port.

1 Toshiba 755e
I bought this PDA two years ago. It has never synched well with either my laptop or my desktop. I always have to reset the PDA in order for it to synch. This didn't happen when it was new and Toshiba tells me it can only be my virus protection. I have also gone through three batteries. I was told today (3/1/05) that the battery is now $84 and that Toshiba no longer repairs PAs. Overall, very poor support from Toshiba.
2 toshiba e755
Used product for 8 weeks before complete failure in the absence of any kind of misuse. Since use began only 4 weeks before end of warranty period, Toshiba offered not help, and no service options, even though I was willing to pay. Was told twice I would be called by Toshiba Customer relations, and wasn't. Pocket PC's not repaired at authorized Toshiba computer service centers in a 20 mile radius. The nature of the failure was a complete system freeze, and failure of both "soft" and "hard" reboots to fix. Screen ultimately blank, with fully charged battery. Truly a $500 paper weight. It is a bitter lesson: do not purchase Toshiba computer products, unless from a retailer that allows no questions asked unconditional return (not too many of those!) What's amazing is this type of failure has been described by reviewers of the previous model, AND the subsequent e805. Toshiba is not ready for prime time, and hasn't been for years. This suggest to me a deep structural problem in its engineering and management.
3 very good... few small problems
the product is good and promising for a bussy user
but there are few problems :
1- No good support.
2- It frozes in two occasions, so I have to restart it again, and it is a very good practice to keep it sync everyday with your main computer.
3- it turned off by itself 6 times... that is really bad, because this ment that I have to re-sync with my computer, a process usually takes time and efford, and you wouldn't like it to happen SIX time.
4 Great product but..
This would be a really great product if it didnt continually need to be re-set. Its annoying because it resets for seemingly no reason at all, and I lose all my information, and then have to re-synch with Outlook, which defeats the whole point of having the unit. Im trying to find an answer from Tohiba, or to find out if I have the biggest lemon in the world
5 exelent pda
I just picked one of these up for 300 bucks, and let me tell you that this is the best pda I have ever used. I had a ipaq 3760 which wore out, and I was fortunate enough to find one of these for a mere 300 bucks, compaired to the ipaq 1945 which is the best other product in this price range, the e755 wins hands down. It has both SD and CF slots, integrated wireless, and enough features to keep you on your heels for weeks. and now the biggest thing... the battery life is great! I can use this all day without recharging it or changing the battery. exelent buy on a exelent unit.
6 Best PDA ever
It is the fastest and most elegant PDA I have ever used
7 Very powerful and easy to use. No problems to date
I have owned this unit for over a week and have put it through some extensive testing. So far there have been no issues. I have never had to software or hardware reset the unit. One review said that when they powered off, the alignment screen came up. This is caused when you push the notepad button while pressing the power button. I agree with another review that stated the battery is limited. Get the extended battey.
8 Excellent Product!
This pocket pc by toshiba is one of the best products you can buy. It is extremely user-friendly to someone with basic computer knowledge, and is very easy to set up appointments, calendar dates, etc. If you follow the directions provided in the box, you will NOT have ANY problems with the device.
Do NOT listen to any of the previous reviews telling you about problems with the e755 pocket pc. Not only have I never had to reset this pda, but I've not once experienced any problems with the software or operating system. I've also not once experienced any problems with wifi connecting to my home network. Everything synced perfectly with my laptop, no questions asked. The only problem I found was the battery life was rather short (4 hours), so I'd recommend the high capacity battery which is 3 times the length. Problem solved.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this product to someone who wants one of the most powerful pocket pc's to date, and wireless highspeed internet access.
9 Good Device, but has flaws...
I bought that device because of all the features and it seems to be very useful. Wireless and the Transcriber works perfect and I'm very impressed with the device.
However now it starts to act up a little, first I tought I did something to it but the problems keep coming back:
When I try to shut it down with the Power Button I always get the screen alignment Screen and cannot turn the device off at all.
Some applications won't start anymore because everytime I select them the red dots keep coming up and present the copy/paste menu.
This is very annoying because you have to reset the device over and over again and I try to find a fix [OS update or Flash Update], but when there is no solution Toshiba will get it back.
And as I can see here there are more people which are having the same problem I have. So it is a flaw in the thing itself.
So wait till this problem is solved before buying one...
10 Do not listen to all of the one stars
This is a great device. I have had it now for about 3 months. I have not had to do one soft reset in 2 months after i learned how to use it.
And i had to do one hard reset when i got back from vacation and i drained the battery down to almost nothing.
11 disappointed
I bought this item with a lot of high hopes. I had used a Compaq Ipaq for about a year and thought this would be an upgrade. After having constant problems with resets and the wireless feature I am about to give up on it. I didn't realize what a poor product this is until after my 30 days to return it so I guess I am stuck with it. I probably should have waited til the new series came out. Don't make the same mistake I did.
12 Don't let the features fool you.
I purchased this unit for all of the features: compact flash slot and secure digital, WI FI, good amount of memory, etc. all for a reasonable price.
However, after using it for only a few days it would not turn off. I had to reset the machine. Then the file explorer would lock up and I could not get it to shut down.
I kept this PDA for almost 30 days trying everything I could to keep it running. After having to reset it 8-10 times, losing all of my data each time, I just couldn't stand it anymore. I checked with a friend who had also owned this model Toshiba. He and his boss had the same exact problems. That's three examples that this machine is just unstable. I finally had to return it, very disappointed.
13 Good Performance.
Read many reviews and since my house is totally 802.11, I decided on the e755. Set up was quite easy. Connecting to my wi-fi was e breeze. The only problem I encountered was a white screen on the second day, which I went to Toshiba website and found instructions on how to reset.
After relaoding all my setting (15-20 mins), I was on the go again.
Another annoyance is the effort it takes to remove the PDA from the cradle. Toshiba should include a release button like the one they have for the CF card.
14 disappointing
This product is great on features, which was the reason why I bought it. I started having trouble with connecting it to the internet, with the router being in close viscinity.
I later found out after reading some more reviews that this device's Wi-Fi card only supports 64-bit WEP encryption, and not 12-bit. I kept on having problems even if WEP encryption was disabled.
After atleast 10 hard-resets over a period of 15 days, the battery stopped charging, even when the unit was on the cradle for 2 days in a row. I have always had a hard time with Toshiba's customer service, so I decided not to contact them, and return the PDA back to Amazon.
I think Toshiba has realized some of the problems in this PDA, which is why they have come out with a new line altogether. I would however recommend getting an HP or Dell, because of their customer support.
15 Not Bad
It's a very nice design machine. Very easy to use. I had some problem with the Widonws mobile 2003. Certain programs are unable to open, like the Home, LAN manager, and I was unable to shut down the machine because when I press the power buttom once, it is supposed to shut down, but it asked me "allign the screen?" and after I alligned it, it went back to the desktop again, and then I pressed the shut down buttom, the allignment thing showed up again, and there was not way to shut this thing down. I had not choice but to erase everything. It has happened twice, and I just bought it a month ago. Everything else is good.
16 Best Buy PDA
It is a best buy PDA. It connects to wireless network without a single problem. Easy to setup and fast for even non-PDA tailor web-site. Compared with Palm Tungsten T, the pocket PC OS is far more sophsicated and powerful. And the PC2003 version is stable. Featurewise, this PDA is second to none. And the price is really good. In addition, I brought extension pack with this PDA, which is only $15 after rebate. With keyboard and extension pack, I don't need my notebook anymore.
It really is a gem for mobile professional.
17 A truely powerful PocketPC at a very reasonable price!
Pro: It has everything you expect except for Bluetooth! Very bright and vivid screen. Very decent speed (I can play a bunch SNES games smoothly)! Very good body contruction (I dropped it once on the floor and nothing breaks)!
Con: It's difficult to insert into/remove from the cradle. Not very good design for 'record' button.
Bottomline: With Amazon's price, you can't find another PDA with matching specs!
Toshiba has two new PDAs just came out. However, if you compare the specs and the price, e755 is still #1 choice!
18 Top Pocket PC
The best pocket PC ever (I've had 2 Compaqs). Together with Toshiba Expansion pack and a keyboard, it's a perfect tool for a mobile professional.
19 A great machine at a great price
This little Pocket PC is truly a piece of artwork. It is the most full-featured device you can find for such a reasonable price. The device has WI-FI, a fast processor (400MHZ, plenty of RAM(96MB) and expansion (SD and compact flash). It has a great little jog dial and although many complain about the record button above that, it can be turned off, changed to do something else or you can make it so that buttons don't "wake" the device.
I must say that the WI-FI is awesome. Although I was skeptical at first the scrolling for non-PDA optimized sites is easy and not at all a buden. Transfer speeds are also very close to any laptop or desktop WI-FI.
I've been finding more and more uses for the device and there are many great freewares out there for it. I just can't express how great this device is, I think everyone should own one!
20 It has proven to me its value.
I recently purchased the Toshiba PocketPC 750 PDA and it has proven its worth to me. One day, I had to run to a door and I managed to drop the PDA to the floor. To my surprise the unit did not brake at all. The screen did not brake, nor the PDA case bend a little. Also, it is a complete office in your palm. The wireless feature works great and fast, the screen in bright and sharp, the battery last a long time, and there are a lot of additional addons that you can purchase to expand the unit.
Ignacio.
21 Great Pocket PC
I use my Toshiba for medical applications and it is fast and flawless. I would definately advise buying this product for use in the hospital or at the clinic.
22 Absolutely FABULOUS - Upgraded from iPAQ
I have been a long time Palm user - I just gave my Palm Vx to my son and first bought an HP iPAQ 1945 to replace it - what a piece of JUNK! Not only did I have a horrible time getting things set up but, even HP's tech support spent hours on the phone trying to get Bluetooth to work. Then, when I tried to get help on HP's site, my questions were REMOVED! So, I took the iPAQ back to the store and bought a Tosiba e755 instead. BEST thing I ever did! Not only does the e755 come with a printed manual (which the iPAQ did not) but they also QUICKLY (within minutes) helped solve a problem I had with a setup issue.
In addition, the Toshiba comes with significantly more memory, speed, and other features which, after you would spend a gazzillion or so dollars adding the same things to an iPAQ, it makes my Toshiba a far better deal!
Avoid HP at all costs - I'll NEVER buy an HP product again. Get a Toshiba instead - you won't regret it!
23 unstable
Had to do a soft reboot about 10 times in a week/ Go buy an HP product instead.
24 All-in-all, a very good buy
The e755 is my fifth WinCE/PocketPC/Windows Mobile PDA over the years, with my first being an Everex Freestyle waaayyy back when. My previous machine to the e755 was a Toshiba e570, which was a relatively uncommon model here in the U.S. (Only sold through Toshiba direct). So you know where I'm coming from in this review, the e570 had a 206MHz StrongARM processor and 64Mb of RAM. There was no FlashRAM area like the e755, although it did have both SD and Compact Flash Type II slots. On the e755, I've purchased the extended-life battery (direct from Toshiba) and the Expansion Pack that clips to the bottom of the main unit.
I can't comment on Toshiba's customer service, because I've never had to use it for any Toshiba PDA I've owned. They've all been rock-solid and reliable. One thing that may contribute to that is that I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS and let the thing fully charge before I went playing with it. Resist the temptation and you'll likely be happy for it.
I've had the e755 for just over a week now and my overall impression is a good one. Nice solid machine. Lots of neat little improvements to the OS that enhance the experience. Love the screen - both in it's larger size and transflective technology.
Enough rambling, here's the pros and cons. You'll find some features showing up in both columns, since some of them are a mixed bag.
PROS:
LOVE THAT SCREEN! It's bigger and the even lighting and transflective LCD often gives the impression of ink-on-paper, rather than the look of a 'screen.' I don't know how better to describe it, but I like it. Very easy on the eyes, even when reading books via MS Reader at small type sizes.
CASE: It's got a metal case. Big improvement over the previous silver-coated plastic case on the e570, in that the latter eventually wore through the silvery coating on the corners that rubbed against the storage case.
PROCESSOR: The 400MHz processor makes a difference in many apps, not so much in others. However, the overall 'feel' is that the machine is smoother and more fluid, which results from fewer 'little pauses' as programs open, close and move data.
FLASH RAM: The 32Mb FlashRAM memory section is a great place to install third-party programs and your e-mail attachments, in that it completely frees you from worrying about your SD and CF cards. You can remove and replace them at will, since they only hold data and not programs. Nice. NOTE: A previous reviewer indicated that the FlashRAM would preserve your programs if you removed the battery. WRONG. They'll still be there, true, but the registry entries in the OS will be gone. You'll have to reinstall them to regain the menu icons and such. (Found this out the hard way: Dropped the PDA and dislodged the battery.)
OS: Lots of neat little improvements to the OS. Nicer look and feel. If you put a year in a contact's birthday, the note in Calendar calculates how old they are and includes it in the entry title each year. Lots of little things like that. Media Player 9 is a big improvement. IE improved some, but no big deal. You can have signatures on you e-mail now, just like desktop Outlook. And on and on. A nice incremental upgrade.
CONS:
OS: Despite all the improvements, WinMobile 2003 is an OS that's going to need a service patch soon. Still a little unstable, with relatively frequent (once every day or two) soft reboots required. Some programs that claim to be compatible really aren't, but that's normal with an early release such as this.
WIRELESS: While it's a plus having it integrated into the machine, this isn't a good implementation. The OS support is just weird - two separate control panels for what is essentially one function. Compared to the Socket brand wireless card I bought for my e570, the whole wireless process (finding a network, connecting, etc.) is fairly slow. I don't know if this is a hardware problem (and therefore Toshiba-specific) or an OS problem, but I suspect the truth lies somewhere in-between, with the hardware and software 'fighting' each other a bit. Even browsing via PocketIE is slower than on the half-as-fast e570. Not at ALL unusable, mind you, just a little frustrating considering the chops the e755 SHOULD have, given its processor. If I hadn't see the faster browsing on the other machine, I probably wouldn't have listed this as a 'con.'
BUTTONS and IR PORT: I've never cared for the fact that Toshiba puts their IR ports on the left side of the machine. It means you have to hold it sideways to connect with anyone but another Toshiba. And this time they put the port on the BOTTOM of the left side, where you'd normally hold the machine. Dumb. Worse by far is the button that activates the voice recorder. It's EXACTLY where you'd put your fingers pulling the PDA out of it's case. You have to consciously avoid it every single time. If they'd just put it below the thumbwheel, this problem never would have happened. REALLY dumb. You can disable this button in the control panels, but that kinda defeats the purpose, now doesn't it?
So, overall: Two 'real' problems (see last 'con' above), a couple of minor gripes - which may be solved by a service patch in the near future - and several "That's really neat" features.
Couple all the 'plusses' with the current (Oct 2003) practically-theft-for-this-feature-set pricing and this machine is actually one heck of a deal. If you listen to a LOT of music or want to do a LOT of wireless, I'd strongly recommend the 'endless' expanded battery. I've used the thing for 6+ hours and not gotten below 75% charge. Definitely worth it if you're a serious user.
25 Sweet PDA
I have had this unit for a few weeks now and I am still amazed by what it can do. I was a tad skeptical about the usability of the wireless browsing, but I am sold now. The only thing I could wish to be better would be battery life, but hey, you can't have everything! It still amazes me that I can watch full two hour movies on this thing.
26 I returned it after 24 hours
This is the first Pocket PC I've owned, so I'm not sure what to expect in terms of workmanship and quality.
Pros:
- making the Wi-Fi connection could not have been easier. This was the main reason I bought the device, and I was able to connect to my home 802.11b network almost automatically
- PPC 2003 is so easy to use; I like the way the soft keyboard opens automatically when a form field receives focus in IE. Nice!
- The display is very bright and clear. Beats the heck out of my Handspring Treo!
Cons:
- The workmanship is inferior. For example, the AC adapter cord simply falls out of the back of my unit's base with the slightest jiggle.
- The recording button drove me nuts. I could not remove the unit from its base without accidentally pressing the recording button.
- The Wi-Fi connection drops without warning, even very close to the base station.
- Toshiba support is indifferent to customer queries. I called to see if I could buy an extended warranty for the unit and was first told they didn't offer it. Then when I told the customer service representative that I was looking at a warranty on the Toshiba site, she said they did sell them after all. She asked me to hang on a minute and then hung up on me.
I am not slamming the unit (three stars out of five). I think if you are willing to take a risk on workmanship, you get a very good list of features for the price. In fact, you have to compare the e755 to a high-end iPAQ to get a similar list of features. But for my first and only Pocket PC I want something that feels like its better made.
27 Great PDA!!!
Upgraded from a Jornada 548, and very glad I did.
Pros: Processor is very fast; moving between programs and views is a breeze; screen redraws almost instantaneous; screen is bright and text clear; 3.8" screen vs. the usual 3.5" is nice; WiFi is a nice feature; has tons of memory--96MB RAM, CF and SD. Also nice to have a switch to turn the battery off completely.
Cons: comparatively minor for what you get w/ the 755, particularly at the Amazon price. The record button is located on the upper left side of the unit about where I put my hand to remove it from the docking station, inadvertently engaging the record function, so I disabled it. Not quite as easy to insert and remove from docking station as some units, such as the HP Jornada, but again minor stuff; WiFi switch a bit difficult to switch on/off. Manual doesn't have an index.
Great out-of-the-box experience. Purposely did not read the directions; took only a couple of minutes to set up the PDA (select proper time zone, align screen) and then I flipped the WiFi switch and 20 seconds later I was connected to my wireless home network. Wireless syncing is a bit more difficult to negotiate though--still working on that. And while some find the Toshiba design uninspiring, it has nice clean lines I would term as simple sophistication.
While some improvements come with the new MS OS, you'll still want to download the now standard plug-ins for the Today screen. Pleasant surprise: handwriting recognition appears improved from the 2002 version. Have tested it numerous times and it has worked near flwlessly--I might actually use this feature now. All in all, a great unit--if I had it to do again, I'd make this purchase again.
28 Good PDA for power user
This is a great PDA if you know your tech stuff and don't mind soft resetting the unit often.
1. WiFi works great even with WAP encryption tunred on. However, setting up wireless ActiveSync was painful even for someone who is familiar with networking. The configuration just isn't intuitive at all and is scattered in many different places.
2. The extra large screen is a big plus. 3.8 inch vs 3.5.
3. Media player works fine. I am able to stream live TV program to this unit without skipping frames. This is a pleasant surprise.
4. I was able to get ActiveSync to work with Outlook after several tries. I havn't tried synching with Exchange Server. Again, if you are none technical, you will most likely run into problems.
5. The built-in speaker sucks. Most other PDAs have better speakers.
6. Soft Reset will be your daily activity. I don't believe Toshiba is at fault. It is a built-in Microsoft "FEATURE".
7. There is no COM port built-in. If you want to use serial GPS, you will need to get the software driver that turns USB into simulated COM port. Even then, it is painful to use and requires lots of resets.
8. 32MB build-in extra FLASH storage means you probably don't need memory card soon.
9. No Bluetooth
10. The manual is pretty much useless except for telling you how to soft reset the unit.
11. Be careful with hard reset. You DO lose everything that's not in the flash memory.
29 So much promise, so little delivery
I have been an avid Palm user since the Pilot 5000. I've tried Windows handhelds from time to time, but they never seemed to be ready for any real use. I hoped that after all these revisions (Windows CE -> PalmPC -> Pocket PC -> Windows Mobile 2003) that maybe they'd have the annoyances ironed out by now.
Unfortunately, Toshiba and/or Microsoft still have a long way to go.
What's the big difference between this device and my Palm? It has built in WiFi, a web browser, e-mail, and Windows Media Player. 1) It is constantly losing connection to the wireless LAN (three different wireless LANs that I tried), so browsing is difficult. 2) It has IMAP support, sort of. Regardless of whether I configure it to download just message headers or the entire body, it will only download message headers. It also shows my other IMAP folders (besides the Inbox) but will never display any messages in them. 3) Despite claiming to play various Windows Media file types and streams, it has so far only been able to play the sample file that comes with the player. Not very entertaining after you've seen it once. 4) Despite claiming support for my Microsoft Exchange server, despite repeated ActiveSync attempts, this unit never would synchronize my Calendar and Contacts, just Notes and Tasks.
The handwriting recognizer (Transcriber) is superior to Jot and Grafitti, but only if you are writing out more than a couple of words. For e-mail addresses and web site URLs, you're better off using the keyboard.
Basically, I have an overpriced Palm with a fancy screen and lower battery life. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this item. I'll be trying out the Sharp Zaurus to see if they're any better.
30 Best PDA ever
This is my 3rd PDA and 755 is by far the best... 400mhz really fast and battery lasts for days
31 Love it !!!
I was a Palm guy. After going over 6 Palms devices (3Com, Palm, Sony, Handspring...), I decided to try PCC. This is now my second PocketPC2003 in less than a month. I first purchased the new HP iPAQ 1935 w/ PPC2003. The iPAQ 1935 is very small and so easy to carry. But with a lack of wireless (SDIO/802.11 not available everywhere) on the iPAQ, I decided to try the Toshiba 755.
Just got the Toshiba e755 yesterday. First impression, the unit is BIG and little heavy compared to my other iPAQ. I can now feel it on my pocket.
On first power on, the screen went white (just lighted). Tried several options/buttons and still nothing. I thought the unit was dead. I then removed the battery and put it back on. The unit then started working.
The first test was the wireless. It took me about an hour to configure the 802.11 with my Linksys AP. The reason it took so long was the WEP config. Without WEP, the unit detected my AP and I was connected to the network in couple minutes. You have to get use to browse the web via a handheld, the screen is very small. I liked using MS messenger, this is great.
Tried some videos using MediaPlayer9 via wireless and was impressed of the result. This unit is faster and smoother when playing video than my iPAQ. I will be testing VPN and Terminal Services, this will be a good test for work.
Battery usage seems to be good but carry an extra battery if you plan using the wireless. I got about 2h of wireless usage (regular use). The charging time is not too bad either, it took less than 2h to recharge from a dead battery.
Overall, I will give a 5 stars. THis is a great unit, if you're a power users, get this one. At $320, it offers many features than other PPCs for the same price.
32 Best PDA Available
I am a Linux user and I was going to buy a Zaurus SL5600 as my first PDA. The reason I didnt do this is because my buddy bought it (wanting to impress me) and the media player was extremely skimpy, and while the community was large, no user-made software was very high-end. As a gamer too, I found no games in these communities that were very high end or even interesting to me. I also have to admit it was a bit big. Lastly, I didn't get the Zaurus because it cost JUST as much as this PDA did for me, however this has built in WiFi. It has the same specs, but i have completely wireless internet with NO additional cards. This means I can carry my CF 1gb MicroDrive and STILL browse the internet. I can listen to my MP3 collection and surf the net at the same time! I also use this to take notes during meetings. This PDA has so many usefull functions.
The Toshiba e755 is my first PDA. I have had NOTHING but fun with it from day one. After setting the software up on my one and only windows machine at home (which was very easy - almost too easy) I imediately used some 3rd party software to put a trailer of Spiderman on the PDA. I was AMAZED by the vibrant colors displayed by the back-lit screen and also by how smoothely the frames ran. Next I recorded a simpsons episode and transfrered it to my PDA. The results were astounding. You would never believe that I could fit a TV show in 8mb, a little less than 1/16 of the entire storage space available on this PDA!
Gaming has been reasonably fun on this unit as well. I got the Tomb Raider game and it looks incredible. On such a little device, I was able to play the original Tomb Raider at FULL SPEED (great game by the way). This is perfect for on-the-road kind of things.
Last, but not least, is the audio playback. It is pretty incredible. My brother's iPod sounds JUST as good as my PDA, but his unit gets louder. My one real complaint about the PDA is that the speaker doesn't get loud enough. This is only minor, however, because when headphones are plugged in, even for my deaf ears, they are, on a scale between 1 as the quitest and 10 as the loudest about a 7. This is fine, it is RIGHT where I like my sound levels. I dont know how everyone else likes it, but this PDA, coincidentally, hits the spot.
I forgot to mention the Wireless 802.11b internet access. While it isn't the FASTEST way to connect to the internet, as I said before, it saves you money because you then have a CF slot available. Since CF is cheaper than Secure Digital, you can get higher storage cards for cheaper than you could with a SD card. The biggest advantage to having the wireless WiFi is the convenience of it. It doesn't make the PDA much bigger, there are no cards sticking out of the top, and you dont need to search around for the card when you want to use it. All you have to do is flip the switch at the bottom of the PDA. Warning you, however, this wastes battery life minutely faster. If you wish to use the WiFi, make sure you have atleast 80 percent battery left. On a full charge I clocked my batteries with full backlight and wifi on for about 1 and a half hours. With WiFi off, however, I clocked 3 hours and above. This is definitly great power management wise.
So there you guys have it. This was my first PDA and I was very happy with it. I recommend this to all users. If people ever ask why Compaqs are so much more money, don't ask me. My PDA is just as good, and theirs dont come with WiFi built in. You see my verdict, 5 stars. Please, if you are in the market for a high end PDA, this is the one to get. It is small, sleek, convenient, pretty affordable, and powerful. Nothing in the world can beat it.
33 Nice hardware, clumzy software
PROs:
Extra large screen (3.8 inch vs standard 3.5)
WiFi
CF + SD slots + 32MB flash + 64MB RAM = plenty of storage.
Reasonably fast CPU but won't break speeed record.
Cons:
Tiny speaker -> bad sound quality
Size slightly too large for pocket
The clumzy and buggy Windows CE & ActiveSync
Bad documentation. Difficult to setup wireless synch.
34 Great for wi-fi!
If you need a wi-fi PDA you should consider this one. Pocket pc 2003 has made connecting wi-fi easier than before. It automatically sniffs out wi-fi APs and prompt you which one you'd like to connect to. Because this Toshiba has built-in wifi, you don't need to carry extra cards, which would have been bulky and wasting more battery power. And the memory! How can you not love so much memory in a Pocket pc, which is not the most efficient OS in the world, so the more memory = better performance. Xcale processor runs fast, but not hot, so you don't burn your fingers. Seriously this is the best Pocket pc and the wifi function just blows the competition away.
35 My 3rd PPC and by far the best!
This is the 3rd Pocket PC I have owned. (I had a Philips Nino and a Cassiopeia EM500) The Technology and the features of Win CE has come a long way. The built in WiFi connect with ease to my home and work networks. However, being familiar with WiFi home networks does help. The range of the WiFi was better that I expected and is compraiable to any of my other WiFi devices.
In all this the best PPC I have had and I have had a month now with no issues. I highly recommend this unit over many of the others. And [at the price], you can not beat the price for performance!
36 My e755 Experience
1. Shipping - Arrived as promised via UPS. Retail box inside a shipping carton. No visual damages.
2. Packaging & Contents - All good.
3. Out of the box - Purposely did not read the instructions first. Connected the A/C Adapter to the unit and started to use it right away.
4. No problem on making wireless connection to my existing network which consists of wired Ethernet and SMC wireless access point.
5. After the initial successful "dry run", it was time to read the enclosed User's Guide and drill down a bit on various shortcuts and options.
6. I use this unit for surfing the web and reading online emails while I am traveling - the MS ActiveSync takes care of all of them. Did run into some problems after upgrading my OL2000 to OL2002 (included in the Companion CD), so I SystemRestored my PC back to OL2000 and then did the sync again and it worked just fine. (If you are not using Office XP and want to upgrade to OL2002 as suggested, you may want to set a Restore Point before you set up the mobile software on your XP PC.)
7. So far, the unit meets all my expectations - fast, good color, MS Office supports,...! It looks like I'll keep it until the next newer (in technology)/better (in performance) PPC comes out in the next 6 - 12 months :-)
Happy Mobile Computing :-)
37 Work good but with some problems
The PDA is really good. The most great functions I think are the 3.8" screen and Wi-Fi connection.
However, there are some problems of this PDA:
1. Sometimes, the "Home" button will not function well(need to warm reset)
2. Difficult to buy a 3.8" screen overlay
3. The rebate form needs to send 2 times. Two of my friends and I can't find the record on the web, so we send the rebate form to them again and this time, our records appear on the web.
38 Ok product from a bad company
Like the others, I found this unit to be well designed, although lacking in features compared to similar products from HP, such as the iPAQ H5455 and H5555, although the iPAQs usually cost more than the Toshiba. However, the "what you pay is what you get" concept holds true in this case and the money you saved with the Toshiba, in my opinion, is not worth it. Toshiba has very bad customer service and rarely, if ever, come up with patches and upgrades to their ROM software. After owning 2 different Toshiba PPCs, I switched to an iPAQ and never looked back.
39 The BEST PocketPc
I have just bought my e755 few days ago and i was thrilled by it. PPCe755 was my first ppc and i thank god that i choose it.Because this one is the latest in the market and it has the largeest display 3.8" with stylish and sleek design Plus it comes with the new operating system Windows Mobile 2003 and great softwares in the companion cd which are very useful and make your PPC the best in Presentations ('P')
I recommend You to bey it and you won't regret :p
40 I could not find a better value
I searched high and low for the most feature rich PDA with Pocket PC 2003 and integrated 802.11. No question, this is it! Not to mention Amazon's price, there is not a better price on the net!
41 display is inferior to hp
the display brightness and contrast is worse than models from hp. i would recommend comparing the displays at the local store if this is a concern for you. as it is i feel that pda's are hard on the eyes, so it is important for me to get the best possible display. otherwise, this is probably an excellent unit. however, i can't comment on customer service issues.
42 Great Pocket PC!
This is a great Pocket PC! Tons o' memory, two expansion options, and built in WiFi. Have had zero problems with it. The only thing I did was disabled the buttons on the upper left side of the machine...they are right where I grab it to pull it out of the cradle and it would launch notes on me. With the [money maount]rebate and free shipping, Amazon.com is the place to buy this PDA. As of this posting, you won't even come close elsewhere.
43 Toshiba support
This is would be an almost perfect PDA from my experience with an e740, (it does not have the screen resolution of my former Sony Palm OS PDA'S), BUT support is not good. They did answer my E-mail support question quickly, but had no solution. Even though my unit is not very old, they will not provide an upgrade to Mobile 2003, which it could easily support. I suspect support for the e75x PDA's will be equally poor and short lived, which translates into upgrading being very expensive. Buyer beware.
44 Even better with PPC 2003
I liked the "old" e755 with 2002, and now it's even better with PPC 2003. Never had a problem with my unit, and the new OS does seem a bit faster, having been optimized for the XScale. Battery life is also a bit better, especially when using wi-fi, which is a very good thing.
45 another doa
first was totally doa
second had the wireless went dead
third had the rom disk go doa
word to the wise - avoid this thing !
46 Great...but very poor support
Wow! What a great PPC but it comes with one unexpected problem. Toshiba could be providing the worst support in the industry. I connected to my local WiFi network and had problems doing an ActiveSync via Wi-Fi. This was critical to my business need and part of the reason I purchased this particular model. When I called for support, the technician that took my call told me that "they only provide basic Wi-Fi support" but that he would escalate the ticket to the second level and that someone would call me shortly. I continued to tinker while waiting and got the settings correct on my own (the included documentation was of no help). I have still not received a call back from Toshiba (almost two months later). This is completely unacceptable and would make me think twice about ever buying another Toshiba product...
As for the unit--it is great! I have not had any problems except for a couple of soft resets, and I push this thing to the limit every day. The battery life is okay as long as you do not need to have the wireless on all the time. The screen is the best in all light--indoors and out. It is clear and bright. Performance is very good and storage is plentiful. Unit is top notch!
47 Best Price/Performance in a PPC
I bought the e755 a few weeks ago despite all the reviews here that mentioned lack of tech support and numerous bugs. In the time that I've used it, I've only noticed 1 "bug" which involves the 'Home' button, which sometimes fails to bring up the proper menu until a warm-reset is performed. Other than that, the unit was nearly flawless.
The Wi-Fi works great, I didn't have to set anything up besides just switching a button to enable it. It detects the signal, and you're instantly online. Windows media player works wonderful with music and video (you can rotate the screen to get a wider picture!) and the built in speaker is fairly loud, though headphones are much more efficient
This is my first PPC, so I don't know how battery life compares, but I am able to use it for 2-6 hours NONSTOP before I have to charge it. You can darken the screen backlight or set the processor to 200Mhz to get even more batterly life.
Basically, this unit has everything you'll need in a PPC. Built in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SD and CF Type I & II card slots, 96MB of memory, very large and clear 3.8" transreflective display, and increased 200Mhz BUS speed(processor runs at 400Mhz) and Windows Mobile 2003. I have had almost no problems with this model, and I highly recommend it, especially for only $... after a $... rebate if you buy it here.
At 400Mhz, this thing is as fast as my home PC! yeah.. it's a little outdated but...
48 What a machine!!!
I've had my e755 for a few days now and I continue to be amazed at what it does and the speed with which it does it. I've used "bottom tier" PDAs for a couple of years now and it's a real pleasure to move up to this unit. Guess I don't have an eye for style cause I've read reviews slamming the "tin box" design, but I view it as a neat, clean no-nonsense hummer. There may be better PDAs available but I haven't seen one yet.
49 Plagued with problems.
After selling my e740, I was reluctant to purchase the e750 because of the problems the e740 was plagued with. Sad to say, looks like all toshiba did was put a better screen on and kept everything the same, including the problems. I still get the 1% battery warning, and activesync still drops my connection. Not to mention, my record button just broke and is popped inside the machine. I was hoping toshiba would have actually fixed the problems of the 740, but unfortunately, they did not. They would have an exellent handheld if they spent some time on it. I'm sorry, but I cannot reccomend this pda to anyone. I guess its time to switch over to the ipaqs (something I thought I'd never do).
50 LOVE THIS PDA!!!!
The integrated wi-fi feature is awesome and the screen is very bright and sharp. After reading some of the reviews, I was concerned about tech support, but when I called in for a problem I found them very thorough and helpful. Maybe they made some changes??
Anyways, I am very happy I bought this and would recommend it highly!
51 This [stinks]
OMG! I just spent how much money on this handheld for built-in WiFi that won't even work! I follow the instuctions and it says something like: cannot utilze wifi. Even after multiple resets it wont work! This is my second toshiba pda (had e740) and be rest assured I will not buy another toshiba product. Even when I call customer service with problems I and others are experiencing, i get the same thing: uhh, i've never heard of that happening befoe. I STRONGLY advise any potential buyers to stay away from toshiba.
52 No PPC2003 upgrade for e740, don't expect upgrade for e755!
I bought my e740 about 5 months ago and was very proud of it. But, now it is a dead-end brick as Toshiba wouldn't confirm any upgrade of the device (though it was advertised as upgradeable).
The e755 seems to be a fine device but, be prepared without support & upgrade from Toshiba in the next 6 months or a year.
Don't say that you have not been warned...
53 Two DOA's
My first unit came form Staples. It was totally DOA. Second one came form AMAZON and this time just the wireless was DOA. Toshiba clearly has a bit to learn in the QC department.
Both times their tech support assisted in the diagnosis of DOA.
54 Nice handhelds but pricey!
All the features you want in a small package but very pricey. It has BT, infrared, WiFi, SD/CF expansion slots and all the usual features you can expect from a Pocket PC.
The PDA looks cool but its built like a brick, no style. Buttons are standard PPC type and its easy to use. Light weight, slim and has good battery life for a color screen PDA.
A superb multimedia gadget (best in its class) but its of no use to majority of the population:( I had rather spend my gadget budget on a better cell phone or digital camera or new laptop. And the accessories are all too expensive, for example a simple keyboard costs more than an average CPU! Until they start making a sucessful phone/PDA these PDA's won't be become mass market items.
What's the point of carrying around an extra device, charge it, sync it and all the troubles when a simple post-it along with a decent cell phone with reminder/calendar does it? Unless you a really busy executive and your company pays for the purchase price!
Anyways back to the Toshiba e755.. its a superb gadget for PPC and gadget freaks. One of the best PPC 2003 released so far, although iPaq 2215 also looks very good for a lower price. Go for the e755 if you really need a handheld with WiFi. Its marvellous peice of engineering and you will love it!
55 Nice, But Beware
I really like my 755, fast, awesome screen. But, if you need wireless, you might want to look elsewhere, since these units suffer from the (in)famous "ENUM interface" error, which to date Toshiba has not fixed. It seems not all of the units have this error, but if you get one that does you will need to soft reset a lot, right in the middle of a wireless session.
