Toy Story There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of
Toy Story looks intriguing, reawakening the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts (namely
Knickknack and
Tin Toy, which can be found on the Pixar video
Tiny Toy Stories) illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humor--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.
Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas
Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.
Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas
1 Abosolutely Marvelous!
In this review I actually have 3 subjects to brag about! First I am going to brag about Amazon.com. I really don't think they get enough praise for the work they do for us!
I went to the new 'Overstock' and they had one of five things I was looking for. The price was a couple of dollars lower but Amazon.com had ALL of the items and because my order was over $20 I got FREE SHIPPING! I have dealt with this company in the past and any time there has been a mistake it has been fixed immediately and the mistakes have been VERY MINIMUM! THANKS AMAZON!
Now for Toy Story. I never got to go the the movies to see it but being a Toy fanatic and having a broken leg at the time I ordered it from Amazon.com (who else?) and had it delivered straight to my door. It was fantastic and I do believe it could be Disney at his best!
So then part two came out and I had to go to the theatres to see it plus put it on pre-order from Amazon.com. So I went and saw it and it was so much better then the first. I'm not a Star Wars fan at all but I did get the little jokes in the movie and I can't help but be impressed but the 'life-like' impersinations of the human world. It was abosoultely marvelous.
Old and new characters and a similar but different story-line make this movie one of the very best from Disney. I can only hope they will make a part three.
Thanks a lot to Amazon.com and Disney for allowing us to get what we want when we want it!
2 Buzz Light Year impostor ruined it for me
This movie was going good until the whole Buzz Light Year impostor apsect came into the movie and the secret of Zorg being revealed. This movie wasn't clicking on all cylinders like the 1st one. Toy Story 1 fans you're in for a let down. Don't waste your time with this movie!
3 Entertaining.
A good sequel to the smash hit Toy Story. A great family film in which the whole family with enjoy due to the humor and the charismatic characters that are involved. With great voice overs by actors and great directing that made this a great film.
4 Not quite up to the original's standards, but still fun
It's time for Cowboy Camp and Sheriff Woody can't wait. This is the only time where he and Andy get to spend quality time alone together.
Then, Andy accidentally rips Woody's arm off at the last minute and he doesn't want to take a broken toy with him. Woody is shelved. By accident, he ends up in the family garage sale and is stolen by Al of Al's Toy Barn.
Al reunites Woody with Jessie, the Yodeling Cowgirl, Stinky Pete, the Prospector and his faithful horse. Now that the 'set' of Woody collectibles is complete, they're going to be sold to a children's museum in Japan.
Can Buzz Lightyear and the Gang from Andy's room save Woody before it's too late? And, does Woody want to be saved? There's a good time to be had watching and finding out.
5 I like getting gouged
Disney, thanks for putting this set in to the "vault". All you've managed to do is create a market of bootlegs, imports and scam artists. How about prosecuting some of the scum?
Thanks Disney.
6 Loved it!
Here is a sequel that equals its predecessor in sheer enjoyment. Wonderful new characters make the story fresh. Loved all the references to Star Wars. I will be one of the first to purchase the video when it comes out. Hope that this is only the first in a long line of sequels or possible television series.
7 Just as good or better than the first.
I purchased this DVD for my 4 year old daughter. She calls it "Jessie the yodeling cowgirl movie" . It is a very cute movie and all the characters are great. I would recommend it to anyone who liked the first one. Sequel's are not usually as good as the first but this movie is just as good, maybe better.
8 Excellent Movie
This movie is very very much fun. From beginning to end, we are involved and entertained. It is better that the original.
The movie maker here is a lot like Walt Disney himself. Walt had an excellent eye for what made good entertainment, and this movie maker is blessed with the same talent. You can tell that he went through the story ... over and over again ... to make sure everything was feasible and plausible, and to add funny little bits to the main action.
The casting is top-notch. Everybody does a great job, with Tom Hanks leading the way. Tom has the knack of squeezing every possible ounce of laughter out of a funny line ... and then making it seem like he is not trying to be funny on purpose.
My favorite part of the movie is when Jesse remembers what it was like to be with her owner, Emily. It is a very touching scene ... just a great great moment we are privileged to have been given.
But this is a fun movie for everybody. I think they hit a gold mine when they came up with the "Toy Story" idea (how we all can relate to owning toys) and this movie maker does an excellent job of mining every bit of that gold.
9 Best Movie for kids
My 4 year old son loves Toy Story 2 and rented it every opportunity we had, however that was getting expensive so my search began to find it on DVD. For months I was unable to locate this movie on DVD or VHS and gave up until prior to Christmas. I finally found it on the Amazon.com website as used and purchased it right away. My son loves this movie and will watch every chance he gets. The family also enjoyed the movie and will most likely purchase this movie for their own kids and enjoyment.
10 What a Wonderful Double Feature
What can be said for this double bill that hadn't already been said? I was fortunate to get one of these twin packs before they went out of print, and with Pixar and Disney splitting who knows when they will come back. The animation is wonderful, the sound is full and rich. The extras are aplenty and will keep the film buff busy with glee. If you can get a hold of one of these, or the ultimate edition---DO SO NOW!!! They can only go up in value.
11 Fun for the whole family
It is rare for a sequel to surpass the original movie artistically as well as commercially. One of those rare sequels is "Toy Story 2". I didn't think it was possible for Disney and Pixar to create a sequel as good as the first "Toy Story" but they did. "Toy Story 2" is that rare treasure.
In "Toy Story 2" Woody is stolen by Al, the toy collector who plans on selling his collection of Woody and the Round Up Gang to a Japanese toy collector. With Woody kidnapped, Buzz Lightyear, Ham, Slink, Mr. Potato Head, and Rex sets off to find their kidnapped companion. There are three new characters in the movie, Stinky Pete (voiced by Kelsey Grammar), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and Bullseye the horse. The writing and animation is superb. I really enjoyed the scenes with Woody, Jessie, Stinky Pete, and Bullseye. One of my personal scenes is when the toy collector calls in the old man to fix Woody's arm. The details in the animation is amazing and very realistic. I also loved the scenes when Jessie reminisces about her former owner Emily. It was very poignant without coming off as drippy. Sarah McLachlan's song added a melancholy feel to the scenes. Another great moment in the film was when Buzz and the gang were in the toy store looking for Al, the toy collector.
"Toy Story 2" is one of my favorite Disney/Pixar collaborations. This is a film that can be enjoyed by all ages. It is also one of the best films ever, animated or not. The writing in this film is simply too good to ignore. I still enjoy watching this movie to this very day and not get tired of it.
12 A Really Good Sequel
How the makers of Toy Story could take our favorite characters, create a different storyline, add new characters, and turn it into a sequel this good is beyond me. Usually changes such as the ones that were made in this movie end up being too different for my liking, but for some reason the changes only made the story of Woody, Buzz, and their pals more interesting. The new characters (Jessie, Bulls-Eye, and Mrs. Potato Head.) fit right in with the old characters.
I think that many people will be pleased that Ham, Slink, Mr. Potato Head, and Rex all have bigger roles in this movie. As a matter of fact, they are one of the main focuses.
I also must ask other people who have seen this movie if they recognized the man who sewed Woody's arm from the short story in "A Bug's Life". What a funny little old man.
Overall, I would say that this is a great movie to watch as a family, especially if you've seen the original Toy Story. I believe that not only is it cute, but it has a good message. One of the best sequels I've ever seen!
13 The Sequel is Equal
It's not often a sequel comes along that is as impressive as the original. This is true even for Disney (remember "Son of Flubber"?). However, "Toy Story 2" follows up the hit "Toy Story" by giving the impression that Disney really knows what it's doing with this theme. The idea is a good one; what do toys do when no human is around to play with them? The answer that we found in "Toy Story" continues with the further antics of Woody and Buzz Lightyear. This time they again leave home on a mission of rescue. It's just as hilarious as "Toy Story" and just as heart-warming. Along the way we meet some new characters by the names of Jessie, Bullseye and Stinky Pete. However, we retain the original cast that we have come to enjoy. Their personalities, their feelings, their interdependency, and their humor are what makes each of the "Toy Story" movies work so well.
Like its' predecessor, "Toy Story 2" is a movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family and that is really saying a lot in this day and age. Disney was known for its' ability to produce family movies but it, too, has slumped somewhat in recent years. However, "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" show that they can still read the book they wrote when it comes to this genre. Kudos as well to Pixar who has teamed up with them on both movies. If you don't like this movie, you don't like life.
14 Toy Story 2
This movie is one of few good sequel movies. It had a new story, new charecters, and lots more without changing the original charecters too much.
When Woody is kidnapped by a toy collecter, Buzz and the gang set out on a mission to get him back. In the meantime, Woody finds out that he is a rare toy from an old TV series called Woody's Round-Up, and he is going to be part of a collection being shipped to a museum in Japan.
I would recommend this movie to any Toy Story fan!
15 very entertaining!
there really is some old show about woody.the song at the end is real too.a take of it is even done by beatles.maybe on thier help album.its called act naturaly.there is one part where woodys new play pal,a cowgirl called jessie, sings this very depressing song.it is really that sad and it makes kids cry.they shouldve skipped that part.in this one, wheezey,a rubber penguin has lot his squeaker and gets sent to the yard sale.woody goes to rescue him and is abducted by a greedy old collecter.at his house is the complete set of the woodys roundup gang from the old show.they tell woody about how hes a collectors item and how this guy intends to sell them to a toy museum in japan.meanwhile, buzz and some of the other toys head to the thiefs home to rescue woody.there are a lot of famous voices here.woody-tom hanks,buzz-tim allen, springy dog-that hey verne guy and many many more.the kids love thius movie and will watch it till the tape snaps, then scream until you replace it.its one of the best pixar films out there.its not as good as the first one though.there is a bad guy in the collection called stinky pete.hes really creepy.also,a horse named bulleseye.at one point jessie is confiding in woody about how this little girl broke her heart by leaving her underneath the bed and eventualy getting rid of her and sings this terribly sad friendship dirge.this part sends kids to teers.stinky pete is obsessed over getting to the museum to be immortalized after being neglected his whole life.hes very pushy and mean.at the very end, they hint around about a toy story 3.
16 Rediscover the Secret world of Toys
One of the best sequels and best films in cinema history,Disney and Pixar's 3rd film and the blockbuster sequel to Toy Story. This film is spetacular, brilliant, the toys still rule, funny, incredible. Featuring the original voice talents of Tom Hanks , Tim Allen and the rest of them. Also Featuring new voice talents such as Joan Cusack,Kelsey Grammer and Wayne Knight.Bring home the thrilling adventure of the toys in this nonstop funny animated classic.
17 Overpriced is an understatement
If you look at Amazon.com it's priced at $75US and we Canadians have to pay $250? NOT A CHANCE! I'd rather try my luck bidding on Ebay for it than pay that price. I couldn't be more disappointed with Amazon.ca than I am now. Our dollar isn't THAT low yet.
18 It's Different.
It's different from your average animated film. So was Toy Story part 1 but this one is better. The movie plotting is a lot better in this part. I give it five stars(I'd give it six if it was in my hands!)
19 The secret lives of toys
Woody (Tom Hanks), who turns out to be a rare collectible, is stolen by an unscrupulous toy store owner and slated to be sold to a toy museum in Japan. Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and friends embark on a dangerous cross-town rescue mission. This is a very entertaining and perceptive film that remembers the guilt that a child can feel over outgrowing a favorite toy. Sammy the bear was my own constant companion when I was a young child. As I grew older, I sometimes felt a pang of shame when I would encounter him lying unloved and unplayed-with in the bottom of my old toy chest. I hope he's as philosophical and understanding about it as Woody is. As cheerful as this film is, it takes on an added dimension by honoring that first melancholy that a child feels upon outgrowing a formerly cherished plaything. The animation and voice talent are also top-notch.
20 Astounding!
The first Toy Story movie was absolutely amazing but the 1999 sequel however does the unthinkable by taking what was good about the first and building on it!
Here, Tim and Buzz Lightyear are back in their owner's home but things go horribly awry when they are misplaced in a box and are picked up by a saleman who aims to sell it to a public museum and put it up for permanent display and it's up to Tim and Buzz to get themselves back home before it's too late.
There are a lot of great things about this movie but they are too numerous to explain with this review. Go and get this movie as soon as possible! It's worth every penny!
21 In a class of its own
Excellent movie. Both my 3 year old daughter & myself sit down together & watch this movie on a regular basis. We both love this movie - she adores the characters and I love the humourous storyline & quality animation. Not a dull moment from beginning to end.
22 One of the best films ever made
It's not the extraordinary animation that makes this film work so well, it's the characters, the voices and the music (anyone who doesn't cry during Jesse's song has a heart of stone, it's one of the finest things Randy Newman has ever written). But mostly it's the script. Multi-layered in a way that I still can't quite get over, it's got everything from good fun and drama for kids to genuine questions of identity and meaning for adults. Plus, of course, some great jokes. Like most good kids films, this one has been played hundreds of times at our place, to the point where I could probably recite every line by heart, but it still has the power to move me. Of course its impact on 4 year olds is much much better :)
23 Greatest Pixar Animation ever made!!
Toy story 2 is one of those movies you'll love to watch a billion times because of the atmosphere, related charecters and a great storyline. Most of the places made like, Al's toy barn or Pizza Planet may be imaginary but a job well done, it's now a recognizable name, and last but not least, the new charecters are greatly added to the storyline, begining the phenomemon of Woody's round up. I loved this movie and i can't wait for the third one. hope the sequel can out beat the 2nd.
24 Best Disney Sequal
This movie is either just as good as the 1st movie or even better. More characters, More laughs, more TOY STORY MOVIES PLEASE!
25 Great movie..PIRATED COPIES
DO NOT BUY FROM SELLER ONTARIOFILMS...THIS PERSON IS SELLING ILLEGAL COPIES OF MOVIES. I MADE THE MISTAKE OF BUYING TOYSTORY 1&2 FROM THIS CRIMINAL. THE DVD'S WERE COPIES (PIRATED COPIES) BURNED OFF AN ORIGINAL COPY. THE DISCS WERE SCRATCHED AND WOULD NOT PLAY ON ANY DVD PLAYER IN MY HOME. THEREFORE,
DO NOT BUY FROM: ONTARIOFILMS....YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF!!!!
26 Hey, Michael Eisner - Re-release this on DVD!
I've just watched this film on TV with my family, and, since we all loved it, turned to this page to see about buying it. But - no surprise - the geniuses at Disney have locked this one up in their vault (along with the original "Toy Story"), and aren't making it available for sale. So instead of Disney making money by selling me one, I'm going to have to scout around and buy a second-hand copy, or simply videotape it when it's repeated on the Disney Channel. Either way, we won't have the 'mint' copy we'd like, and Disney will be losing another sale. Talk about bad business decisions!
27 My son won't watch anything else at bed time!
my son totaly loves this movie. he picks it every time. i don't know why he loves it so much. he will whatch it at nap time relax and go to sleep same at bed time. we have found only one other movie he will whatch like that it is elmo in grouchland.
28 Toy Story Limited Edition
My copy of Toy Story was stolen along with about 300 of my other DVDs incl some rare ones a couple of weeks ago . I was then desperately seeking a replacement and couldn't find it in Toronto. Ordered through Amazon and had it within 5 days in fantastic condition sealed! . Extremely Satisfied . I highly recommend using this service.
29 Collector's Item
This is definitely a collector's item. It is one of the extremely rare cases when a sequel is better than the original (which was a five star by itself)
Not only do you get two excellent movies in one pack, but the bonus features rival the movies for entertainment value. The outtakes are hilarious, and the short film "Luxo Jnr" belies the fact that it was created way back in 1986.
This should be rated 15 stars - 5 for each movie and 5 for the bonus features.
30 Worth the $
My entire family loves these movies. While we enjoyed the second movie more, both are a joy to watch again and again. We bought the DVD's to replace worn out VHS copies. The 3rd disk doesn't have much of interest, but then, how could they top the movies?
31 the funniest pixar movie's of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is truely the funniest pixar movie. Monster Inc. is funny and finding nemo's ok......,but these movies beats those by a long shot. I havent really seen the special featurres, I havent really seen the dvd's, but when these movie come back in print, ill be the first one to get it. These movies better come back on the shelf,a world without toy story,is like a world without jennifer lopez and ben afflecks movie gigli,it's the best movie ever!!!!!!!(for you serious people, im being sarcastic). Pixar needs to put this back on the shelfs, pronto!!!
32 Wow!!!
I bought this movie for my kids last Christmas and now look whats happening? Well let me tell you the story, when i first got this for my two boys, they watched it atleast 2 times a day. Soon, they started believing that toys are really alive. Now, they try to talk to theyre toys, and when the toys dont say anything back, they try to kill them! I have found about 6 toys, totally ripped apart in their rooms, and they are still watching the movie 2 times a day! Its been a year, and theyre at it again! So i suggest, DONT BUY THIS for your kids!
33 Real Toys
The first time I saw TS1 & 2 was on a bad taped version, so I bought the 2 disc DVD the second I got a DVD player (a couple years ago). And the 2 disc was worth the money. But even seeing them on a badly taped version I was absorbed into the story of these toys. As an only child, I was convinced my toys had a life when I left so watching these movies took me back to my childhood. As disturbing as Sid was, there's a lot of kids who enjoy destroying toys and for this reason he was a perfect 'real' villian for the toys. The best part of these films is that (with the exception of Woody and Buzz, or in TS2's case 'the Woody toy collection') all the toys are real toys. The idea of Toys living has been done before, but the fact that these were actual toys (from Mattle, Hasbro, FisherPrice, etc) really brought it to life (that and the introduction of 3D computer animation in feature length format). At times, I forgot it was animated. And even though Woody and Buzz only became real toys because of the movie, the two eras of toys they represent are very real as are the stories sorounding them (TS1 shinny new toy becomes boy's favorite, TS2 Classic old toy becomes collectors item). Also, the story itself got to the heart of what a buddy film is suppose to be. There's nothing else to say except that these movies are a must have.
34 Adorable Disney movie
wow! If you or your children enjoy family time watching videos then you should deffinatly, deffinatly watch the set of Toy Story. Buzz and Woody set very good examples of friendship and the rest of the amazing toys show very good team work. This video is a video I myself could watch over and over again. This would be a video I would recomend to anyone, of any age, it is GREAT...
35 A real treat
This is a beautifully packaged collection! Get one while supplies last, it may prove as valuable as a vintage Woody doll. Pixar really came up with something wonderful in these two stories, both provide such engaging accounts of one's [longing] for toys of the past. My kids treasure these two movies and the dialog is witty enough to draw parents into the stories. Toy Story II builds on the former, introducing a wider range of characters and offering a light-hearted parable on the collection mania in America. One too many out of the frying pan and into the fire situations for my taste, but the action keeps kids enthralled throughout. Hanks and Allen lend great voice to the battling lead characters, and there are many other wonderful voices as well. The only drawback (and it is a mild one) is not mixing Pixar toys with real family members. I think that would have made the stories even more compelling.
36 One of my kids' ultimate favorites!
My children- ages 4 and 2- are absolutely, totally in love with this movie, and would willingly sit and watch it over and over and over again. They actually much prefer this sequel to the original Toy Story, which seems to scare them a bit (they don't like the scenes in Sid's room with the scary-looking toys, or the when he is blowing up his toys). All-in-all, this is a perfect film, and one which children and parents alike will enjoy together for many years to come.
37 Family favorite!
My husband and I bought this DVD set for our little boy when he was only 2. We weren't sure if he would like it or not, but it's now one of his favorites! This is a great set for family night or even for a lazy Sunday afternoon. We never get tired of watching Buzz and Woody!
38 What good movies!
Both TOY STORY films are so good, funny, great stories, unbelievable animation and Tom Hanks and Tim Allen really make Woddy and Buzz come to life! I don't think there's a person on Earth who doesn't like thesse movies. I remember back in '95 when the first one was in theaters; I saw it literally 5 or 6 times, and the same goes for the second one. Do not pass up this great DVD 2-pack of unforgettable Disney classics! Walt would be so proud!
39 Fun Fun Fun
Toy Story was great. As much for the adults as any kid watching. And Pixar did a great job w/the computer animation.
Toy Story 2 was even better, though it seemed to have more adult pleasing scenes. Both DVDs are as good as the theatre experience. The movies get 5 stars each.
The 3rd disk of technical stuff is interesting, but it didn't hold my attention as much as I thought/hoped it would - so I give that a 3 star rating. I averaged out to overall 4 stars.
I would have been just as happy with the two-pack, but the three-pack looks good in the DVD collection.
Safe yourself a little $$$ and and get the two pack unless you're into the technical pieces.
40 Best Little Boys Movie ever!!
My Sons favorite movies.. BUY THEM QUCIK BEFORE THEY DISSAPEAR INTO THE DISNEY VAULT!!
41 To Infinity....And Beyond!
Both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 were big hits, thanks to the craftmanship of John Lasseter and everyone at Pixar. If you enjoyed both movies and don't yet have them on DVD (or are an avid collector of all things Disney), The Toy Box is the format to get them in!
In Toy Story, Tom Cruise plays Woody, a lovable cowboy who starts out as Andy's favourite toy. Other toys include the nervous TRex, Hamm, Little Bo Peep, an Etch a Sketch, Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles) and Slinkey Dog (voiced by the late Jim Varney). At Andy's birthday party, Woody gathers the toy troops to find out what new presents Andy got for his birthday. Woody soon dicovers that his popularity is in question when a new toy enters Andy's life, Buzz Lightyear (played by Tim Allen). Woody gets a little jealous of the attention Buzz gets. With all the fun little gadgets Buzz comes with, he only has one flaw- he doesn't realize he's just a toy. Woody causes more trouble for Buzz than he had intended when the 2 of them wind up outside Andy's house. To rectify this, Woody tries his best to get himself and Buzz back to Andy's house and away from the clutches of bratty neighbour Sid. The DVD includes The Tin Toy, a 1988 film by Pixar.
Both movies feature the musical score of the talented Randy Newman and the winsome song "You've Got a Friend in Me."
Toy Story 2 starts out with Andy going away to Cowboy Camp. He can't take Woody with him after Woody nearly loses his right arm. However, someone else is interested in Woody- greedy Toy Barn owner Al, who gets possession of Woody and plans to use Woody in an exhibition in Japan. Here, Woody finds out that he came from an old Western show for kids called Woody's Roundup. Here he meets the Roundup Gang. There's Bullseye the horse, Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer) and the feisty but vulnerable Jessie (Joan Cusak). It's up to Buzz to help Woody see there's more happiness in being Andy's toy than being on display with nobody to play with. Other new characters include Buzz's supercool nemesis Zurg, who's introduced in the beginning of the movie and the cute Wheezy the penguin. This DVD also features outtakes which were shown during the credits and the cartoon short Luxo, jr, who wound up as the mascot for Pixar.
And now for the extra disk, give yourself a week or 2 to enjoy all the features which include interviews with the animators, producers and some of the voices. Outtakes, animation secrets, inside jokes and full-length commentaries of both movies are included. Demos of Randy Newman's songs and a video from Riders in the Sky performing the "Woody's Roundup Theme" are included as well as the history of the original concepts that Pixar worked on. But get this soon, because it will soon be out of print and you may have to schill out lots of money in auctions to get it!
42 Just as Enjoyable as the First
It is very rare to find a sequel that is just as enjoyable as its predecessor, but this is one of those rare cases. Since the first film, Buzz and Woody have become the greatest of friends and all in Andy's room has been happy go lucky until the day of the family garage sale. At the garage sale Andy's ends up inadvertantly putting himself up for sale, and even though Andy's mother finds him and tells a prospective buyer that he isn't a sale item, Andy still ends up going home with a collector believing in five finger disounts.
This is a touching story, with some great twists. The animation is flawless as usual and the enjoyment level, and humor are at any all time high.
43 Worth every red cent!!
One cannot say enough in praise of these two brilliant films. The Toy Story films are as close to perfect entertainment as movies get. By using the overused adjective perfect, I am simply stating that the two films contained in this superbly packaged collector's edition filled overflowing with top flight extras geared for all DVD fanatics, stand as the rare example of stories that the entire family can watch, savor and revel in.
I define a perfect film as one that is not only expertly crafted in coordinating all the creative elements, but one that also teaches profound lessons while being pure escapist fun that, while appealing to all ages of an audience, also remains fresh and lucid after many repeated viewings. My personal definition of a perfect film also includes the following elusive criteria: that if one possibly could, it would be most desirable to step out of real life and into the imagined world of the film. The classic musical "Singin' In The Rain" is just one example of a film that meets this "perfect film" criteria. If I could take a few films onto a deserted island, this box set would be included without a doubt.
Teaching the lessons of loyalty, imagination, faith, perseverance, courage and hope, Pixar has crafted two films that truly teach while entertain. No small feat considering the profoundly expansive amount of shallow garbage populating the multi-plexes. Both films earn their happy endings honestly without cheap manipulation. A rare and valuable miracle in of itself.
Pixar's visual paintings are eye-wateringly beautiful to behold. Every frame vibrates in rich color, texture and detail. The writing is crisp, witty, and deceptively literate. It is amazing how both films deftly confront in concepts of mortality and community without resorting to maudlin and sentimental meanderings. The vocal performances of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and a rich supporting cast provide subtetly and humanity to all the fantastic proceedings.
The theme song "You've Got a Friend In Me" is a most charming testaments to companionship. Especially the version with Randy Newman singing a duet with Lyle Lovette. The inclusion of the always excellent Riders in the Sky for the second film also gives the film a fine musical nuance.
It really is tragic that the Oscars and "serious" critics overlooked these phenomenal films which stand as sterling examples of mainstream Hollywood "getting it right".
Do not blanche at the price tag for this box set. It and all the extra trimmings are worth every penny.
44 Worth the extra money!
If I had not received The Ultimate Toy Box: 3 Disc Collector's Set for Christmas, I was going to buy it myself. It is definitely worth the extra money.
The thrid disc is packed with bonus material explaining how the Toy Stories movies went from the original idea to the final rendering. There are hundreds of photos and drawings, sounds samples and story boards. Be prepared to spend a lot of time going through it all.
One of the coolest features is that on several menus you get to use the angle key on your DVD remote to switch between the story board, layout and the final product.
Another is a mini-mixer which lets you listen to either the effects, dialog, music (or a combnation and any two or three) from the elevator scene of Toy Story 2.
If you enjoyed the Toy Story movies and are interested in how computer animation is done then you won't be disappointed in this DVD set.
45 If you don't own either DVD, why not get it all and more...
If, for some strange twist in the fabric of space and time, you don't own either of these movies on DVD (and you'd like to fix that before anyone notices) then this is your lucky day!
The Movies:
The stories are great. The original "Toy Story" is a wonderful flashback to the film that has inspired so much since. "Toy Story 2" is, in my opinion, even better. Neither are technically advanced compared to recent movies, but that's not what's important. The plots and characters are the best you'll ever find in children's entertainment. Half of the jokes will fly over the younger viewers heads, but will keep the adults in stitches. I can't praise these movies enough, they were made from the heart, not the wallet.
The Discs:
My only complaint about the discs, really a minor annoyance, is that the sound volume on the menus is really loud. The menus are fun, with lots to explore. In the "extras" dept, there's very little lame content created just to fill space, it's all there for the fans.
46 Fun movie, something for everyone
I liked a lot about this video (didn't see it in the theatre), just about the worst thing in it was the approx. 9 minutes of movie previews and commercials for other videos. Once you get past that the viewer gets to see a little short PIXAR made about two desk lamps and their antics, just about anybody ought to like that. The story itself I won't really get into except to say that the plot while somewhat kiddish is entertaining with something for everyone altough I think some gags are aimed more at adults than children.
The thing I liked most about it is the way everything was rendered so well. Final Fantasy was completely computer generated but the characters had a certain artificial action in their movements, in Toy Story 2 everything moves very well indeed. Woody & friends move more like people than puppets, the lighting is realistic, details are amazing ( I certainly remember seeing Jessie's reflection in a window). If PIXAR can do so well now (see also Monsters, Inc.)what will they be able to achieve in another 5 years.
47 Toy Story and Toy Story 2 pak
This is a great DVD set because not only do you get the staple of computer animated movies in Toy Story but you also get Toy Story 2, the great follow up!
In Toy Story, it's all about the big move to the new house and leader of the toys in Andy's room, Sherriff Woody (Tom Hanks) prepares his fellow toys for the big move but before the big move, after Andy's birthday, a new toy moves in, Buzz Lightyear of Space Command (Tim Allen). Slowly, Woody starts to feel as if he's getting replaced by Buzz and in an attempt to win Andy's affection back, they both instead get LOST! And now it's a race to find their way back to Andy in time of the move.
In Toy Story 2, Woody is kidnapped because he's accidentily dropped in a box for a garage sale. His kidnapper, Al (Wayne Knight) is a classic toy collector and then Woody finds out that he was also a national phenomenon just like Buzz is. He also finds the rest of Woody's Round Up Gang, Jessie (Joan Cusak) and Stinky Peter (Kelsey Grammar) and they tell him that now that the Round Up Gang was complete that they were going to the Toy Museum in Japan. Woody not wanting any part of that, tries to find ways to escape and get back to Andy while his friends, led by Buzz, Slink the Dog, Mr Potatohead, Rex the T-Rex and Ham are on the hunt to find Woody before Andy gets home.
Seriously, how can you go wrong with either of these classics? This is one of the best DVD sets I own and probably one of my favorites. This set should be a part of any family's collection because the kids will love this movie and the parents will be glad that they did. Also, if you're looking for another great DVD for the whole family, check out MONSTERS Inc and SHREK. Those 2 titles will also go great for your collection.
48 Two excellent animated movies on a 2-Disc DVD Set.
"Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" are two excellent animated movies that I own on a 2-Disc DVD Set. "Toy Story" deals with Woody, the cowboy doll, and Buzz Lightyear, the space ranger, getting kidnapped by Sid, a kid who tortures toys. "Toy Story 2" deals with Woody getting kidnapped by Al, the chicken man and toy collector. There he meets Jessie, the cowgirl, Bullseye, the horse, and Stinky Pete, the prospector. But Buzz Lightyear and the gang are here to save him. If you're a Disney fan and own a DVD player, please own this DVD. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
49 GREAT set, absolutely no complaints.
What more is there to say? Like the movies enough, get this set with all the extras! It's worth the xtra money!
50 Better than the original!
My daughter wore out the original Toy Story tape and it won't play anymore. I thought there would be no way that the second one could be better, but I was wrong. The story is so great! Woody gets kidnapped from his yard and discovers he is an antique doll from his old TV show "Woody's Round-up". We meet his round-up gang which introduces us to new characters, Jesse and Stinky Pete.
Woody's pals, Buzz, Potato Head, Slinky and Ham are trying to get to Al's Toy Barn to rescue him. There are some great moments in the movie that only an adult would catch (the reflection of the dinosaur in the toy car mirror ripped right from "Jurassic Park") which will give you a chuckle.
Overall, a great story, some good tunes (Sarah Mclaughlan will make you cry) and lots of fun! Worth 5 stars.
51 Two Animated Landmarks for the price of one on DVD.
Both " TS 1 & 2", are two of some of the newest standards in animated motion pictures, CGI animated features.
the original "TS" is a epic masterpiece which is fully known as the first Computer animated flick, after five years from stratch this movie was the highest grossing flick of 1995 and was a complete triumph for it's style and engrossing storyline. It tells the story of a Cowboy doll named " Woody" is seems to happy living with his owner " Andy" but then when "Andy" gets a birthday, he recieves a Spaceman action figure named " Buzz Lightyear" and "Woody" seems to worry that Andy might replace him with Buzz but now "Woody" with " Buzz" are now on a adventure that can change both of their lives.
then " Toy Story 2", a rich and fantastic sequel became one of 1999's Biggest hits and another triumph for the Pixar Company. The story continues as " Woody" is kidnapped by a greedy Toy owner who plans on selling him to a Toy Museum, now Buzz and friends must save him before he is history in a Museum. A rare and brilliant sequel that belongs in the category of great sequels along with the likes of " Empire Strikes Back", " Evil Dead II", " Dawn of the Dead", " Aliens", " Terminator 2", " The Road Warrior", " Blade II", " Scream 2" and other sequels that mean good.
If your a DVD and Disney Fan, buy these movies and be happy with both.
52 Toy Story 2
We really loved this movie. Our 2 1/2 year old son just went wild over Buzz Lightyear. It was really cute. Toy Story 2 is really better suited for a really young audience because there is no scary bad guy. The mean boy Sid of Toy Story 1 was just a little too scary. We preferred this movie to the original.
53 Better than the first
Toy story 2 fleshes out the charcter of Woody. Woody is kidnapped by a greedy toy collector who wants to put him in a museum with the rest of his round-up gang. Woody finds out he was part of a major children's puppet show (Like Howdy Doody) and that he is a very valuable doll. He meets Jessie who is part of his round-up gang. Jessie wants to go to the museum and hates being in storage. The rest of the round-up gang includes woody's horse Bullseye and the Prospector. Woody still holds loyalty to Andy.
In the meantime Andy's toys launch a daring rescue. They run into Barbie (Tour Guide Barbie). Of course Barbie is portrayed as a complete Airhead. The Round-uP gang convince Woody to join them. Andy is getting older and will out grow his toys. Jessie sings a beautiful song "When she loved me" about her child Emily. Emily outgrew Jessie and ended up giving her to charity. Of course Buzz and the Gang reach Woody.
Woody realizes he cannot stop Andy from growing up and he would not miss it for the world. The prospector tries to stop them. Eventually Woody goes back to Andy with Jessie and Bullseye.
This is a great story about loyalty and frienship. Most children animation shows are very violent. Toy Story 2, as well as the first movie, gives a possitive message to children and are a refreshing change of pace. Toy Story 2 shows that a Child is a toys entire universe and that they are crushed deaply when they are abandon. There are some children that do have an enotional attachment to their toys and do keep them into their adulthood. Some even pass their toys onto thier children. Toy story is a movie that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. The animation was fantastic. I like that "tongue in cheek" reference to Star Wars when Buzz confronted Emperor Zurge.
"You killed my father"
"Wrong, I am your father"
"No!!!"
Will there be a Toy Story 3?
54 Wonderful!
A excellent, expansive set covering every aspect of the making of these two films. Well worth it!
55 Fun for Adults and Children
I liked this movie better than the first one. The old gang is still here, with Buzz, Woody, Rex, Hamm, Sliky, and Potato Head, but the new characters introduced in this film are what makes it so good. Potato Head gains a spouse when Mrs. Potato Head arrives, along with her habit of making sure her husband has enough items in his "pouch", including his shoes and "angry eyes". Jessie, Stinky Pete, and Bullseye form Woody's round up gang. Woody meets these new toys after being kidnapped by Al, a toystore owner who wants to add Woody to his collection of rare toys. Woody's pals find out that he's been kidnapped and set off on a mission to bring him back to Andy's bedroom. They encounter some funny mishaps along the way, but in the end, everyone ends up safe and sound.
I have 2 young children ages 3 and 1 and they both adore this film. I also enjoy watching it with them, and I always seem to get a laugh from it. This is a good movie to watch as a family. The kids and the adults will enjoy it.
56 Very Good, even for grown-ups
This very funny video has such a good script, that grown-ups can enjoy it as much as the kids. This time out, Woody gets taken from a garage sale and ends up in a valuable collection. Should he go home? Can he go home? Is Andy growing up and losing interest in him? The toy characters are very funny; I especially like Rex, the dinosaur and Wheezy, the penguin. Of course, Woody and Buzz Lightyear are the stars and they are witty, brave, and true-blue. I recommend this video to children and parents alike.
57 Two triumphs in animated cinema
Not only do "Toy Story 1 & 2" feature stunning animation, but they also have appealing stories, funny dialogue/jokes, and heart. Around the time the first "Toy Story" came out, I had been disappointed with some of Disney's 90's animated features (namely "Pocahontas" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"). Disney storytellers were getting a bit too serious. Well, they brought the wide-eyed fun quality back, and this time they coupled it with the most groundbreaking, realistic animation I had ever seen.
Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and other gifted cast members do wonderful voice work. Don't mean to sound cliche, but they really bring life to the characters, just as the plot brings life to toys. The humor/comic timing is right on. There are enough madcap moments to keep kids entertained and enough inside/background jokes for adults to have a laugh.
Both films rank among my favorite movies of all time. I haven't met anyone who doesn't like these movies if they have seen them. It's going to be one of those timeless classics that people will pass on to their children for years to come. I'm glad to have been alive when it debuted; it makes me feel special! :)
58 If toys were alive, this is the story they would tell...
I saw this film in two halves. I watched part of it at a friend's place, and the other half on a flight home. This is such a "feel good" movie. You come out wanting to watch it all over again. Great fun to watch.
In this sequel, Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back. This time Andy is headed off to camp and mom decides to sell off some of the older toys. In an attempt at a rescue, Woody gets stolen by a maniacal toy collector. Turns out Woody belongs in a collection of three (together with Jessie the Cowgirl, and Stinky Pete the prospector). When Woody's friend realize what has happened, they form a rescue mission of their own. Tracking down the collector was easy because of his chicken-suit commercial promoting the toy store he works at called the Toy Barn. The rest of the movie just has to be watched.
As Doug Thomas puts in his editorial review, this story is about the "eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever." What happens when a toy's owner grows old and slowly forgets about the toy? The conclusion I gathered from the film is that it's more important to be loved (and have loved) than not to have been loved (and love) at all. And when the owner goes away, the saying "Besides, that's what friends are for." just warms the heart. When all is said and done, we see that the toys have a lot of fun on their own anyway ;).
There is a more complicated theme I found in the story. (Forgive me if the symbolism seems a bit far fetched.) When Buzz sings "You've got a friend in me..." it forces Woody to choose between family (the collection that'll last forever in a museum, much like how family is forever) and his friends (Buzz and his rescue party). Woody is torn between the two. Should he go back home to his friends and owner, or should he get memorialized in a museum for the world to see. And I think the film's resolution of this matter was well done. Initially, the family pulls more weight (Woody chooses to stay with Jessie and Pete), but when the dust settles life just isn't complete (he changes his mind which angers Pete and gives stinky real meaning). The best thing to do is have your cake and eat it to. Bring family and friends together. Let the choice be both. Who says they can't get along? And if they can't, well, relationships aren't set in stone. All it takes is some common ground, something to agree on.
You have got to see this film. It will send you to the floor laughing. As always, don't forget to stay for the ending credits where they have outtakes that'll make you laugh until it hurts.
59 Better Than The Original!
This is better than the first movie, including that Tom Hanks should be nominated for "Best Actor" of the 74th Annual Academy Awards. This is why this is better than the original.
60 Better Than The Original!

61 Pixar is great
What can I say? Pixar is the King in Computer Animation, and this pack proves it, you'll get both Toy Story 1 & 2, besides a third DVD loaded with extras, very, very Interesting. My only complain is that it hasn't Audio in spanish, heck, not even subtitles in spanish! Disney should realize this kind of collector packs don't get proper transfers in Mˇxico, this one doesn't exist in Mˇxico, and it's a shame my nephew (8 yrs. old) can't enjoy it fully, because he doesn't understand English, nor can read it.
62 Toy Story 2 Tops the Original
Rarely is a sequel better than its predecessor, but the Disney/Pixar combo has struck gold again.
We once again visit the world of toys to meet with Woody, Buzz and the gang. Harmony has been established as Woody and Buzz can now co-exist with one another, until Woody is kidnapped trying to save another toy.
This is a fun movie, even for adults. I do not even have children, but my wife and I were both able to enjoy this movie.
The voice work and artistry were well-done, topping Pixar's previous works, Toy Story and A Bug's Life. The work done by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were well done, as always, but the addition of Wayne Knight, Joan Cusack and Kelsey Grammer to the cast, were good choices and they played the parts well.
This is a great movie for the kids, but there is enough to make this a guilty pleasure for the adults.
63 A good sequel?!!!
Yup. What the first "Toy Story" did well, the sequel does as good if not better. The script was smartly written to give added depth to the characters and has them deal with issues that come out of leftfield but don't come off as farfethed, such as having to deal with the aspect that eventually, their owner will outgrow them. Tim Allen and Tom hanks reprise their roles as Buzz and Woody, and they are hilarious. Don't be fooled to the sequel stigma, treat yourself to maybe the best sequel in the history of Hollywood.

65 Better than the original
This movie is greater than the first movie, better than any movie that has to do with a movie that has toys. I give this ***** (5 out of 5).
66 Review: Toy Story 2
One of the best movies I have ever seen is the Toy Story Trilogy. I do say, that TS is better than TS2, but TS2 is very good.
As the title says, this movie is the sequal of Toy Story. In this movie, Woody is stolen by a collector, and now it is up to the Toy gang to get him back.
I give this movie a 10/10. It is a very good movie, and great for all ages.
Rating: G
Ages: 3+
67 abou the movie.
the movie is very greater then toy story 1 the woody and buzz have become friends. toys are rex, slinky and hamm. incluing new toys. the story begins when andy was playing with buzz and woody the disater happen woody,s arm was ripped he was so upset that he would dearm the other toys were upset about woodys arm ripped finally fun begins when al stoled woody from yard sale. then woody meets jessie, bulleye and propespector doll. the woody did want meet these toy stay with in japan the toys make him crazy so he was ready to go in japan. when buzz and his friends reached the als toy barn and there buzz meet imposter buzz the buzz also meet zurg in lift. steke pete become crazy. the woody save jessie and bulleye the movie is better then shrek.
68 Almost overwhelming.
I spent six hours over the course to two days examining the supplemental material, and I'm pretty sure I still haven't seen it all!
69 the films 2 year olds love!
We were given the origianl Toy Story video when our eldest son turned 3. His younger brother (14 months at the time) watched this movie almost EVERY day for at least a year and became obsessed with Buzz Lightyear. When our third son came along, we tried him out on Toy Story when he got to the same age, and he also became a firm fan! I know the dialogue from both movies front and back, and yet I can STILL watch them and enjoy them. They are fantastic movies. We decided to replace the videos with longer lasting DVDs, as we have a daughter who is 14 months and rather taken with Buzz too. The second movie is just as good, if not better, than the first. They are classic movies that the whole family can enjoy over and over again. Highly recommend them to anyone with young kids, particularly because they have good morals and minimal violence, and because they appeal to adults as much as kids.
70 An OK Movie
This movie was had at best a decent story line and had a few funny scenes here and there. But even the funny scenes were boring and almost lame. Overall, this movie did absolutely nothing for me.
71 Perfect!!!
Before anything else is said, how often do sequels rate equal merit with their predecessor? How many are even half as good? Now, how many are better? Well, here's one that accomplishes that unique feat.
This film features all the originals fromt the first film, plus some new ones, for example Buster the family pet, Jessie the yoddling cowgirl, and Stinky Pete the prospector. Again, the voice cast is superb. The plot is well-thought-out, and the pacing is wonderful. There's enough sentimentality to get you attached to certain charactors, without wallowing in it. That's a finer line than most people think, as too much sentimentality can be painful.
The picture transfered to DVD beautifully, the colors are bright and well-defined, and the sound is wonderful. Please get this film and enjoy it. There's a wonderful lesson about friendship to be learned here, as well as loyalty. Absolutely wonderful!
72 An excellent collector's edition for Disney fans
The collector's editions of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 plus bonus material in the Ultimate Toy Box set make this a great value for all Disney collectors. It's worth the extra money to upgrade to this edition.
73 A sequel that's as good as the original
There is much to like about Toy Story 2. In fact, the only thing I dislike about the movie is its built-in commercial element, which I will discuss later.
The story continues the adventures of Buzz Lightyear, Woody and their friends, all of whom are toys which come to life when people aren't around. It's the perfect child's fantasy. Buzz is an astronaut, and Woody is a cowboy. When the kid they belong to goes off to camp, his mother decides to have a yard sale. Looking in the boy's room, she finds a toy penguin whose 'voice' no longer works. She puts it in the sale, much to the horror of the other toys. Soon, Woody, aided by the family dog, is off to the rescue. He is spied by a ruthless toy store owner who realizes Woody is a highly prized collectible and is worth a great deal of money. The man promptly steals him, and now it is Woody who must be rescued by the other toys.
The story is charming, but the magic is in the animation. This is Disney's third collaboration with Pixar Studios, which mainly uses state of the art computers and skilled technicians to create and animate its characters. In this case, we see the computer at its finest. Animation has been taken to the next level. The colors, the delineation and the attention to detail are all marvels to behold. This marriage of the computer generated and the hand drawn is nearly perfect. I imagine Walt himself would have approved.
The commercial drawback I mentioned is due more to modern marketing than to the movie itself. We are all painfully familiar with promotional tie-ins, all the toy sales that are generated by this type of movie. In this case, everything is almost too perfectly in place for Disney. The items created from the two Toy Story movies are literally toys based on toys. This makes it all seem a bit too calcualated on the company's part. Today, the price of a child's ticket to an animated movie is often but a small fraction of the money you wind up paying. It's all gravy for Disney and for the kids, but it makes some of us adults feel a bit used. I wonder if the real toys inspired by these movies wind up being as beloved as the ones in the movie are. Somehow I doubt it.
74 Toy Story 2 tops the original

75 Toy Story 2
As good as the first, my son loves Woody, Buzz and the whole Toy Story gang. A video I actually don't mind watching with him. And of course he watches it over and over again, good one, we love it.
76 The Ultimate Way to Collect These Movies
Toy Story, released in 1995, enters the world of toys when their owners aren't around. It centers on Woody, a cowboy, who is Andy's favorite toy. But when Andy gets Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger, Woody's place is jeopardized. Woody has to deal with his feelings of jealousy, especially when he and the delusional Buzz become lost toys.
Toy Story 2 followed 4 years later and is the rare sequel that is at least as good as the original, if not better. This time, an evil toy collector has kidnapped Woody, and his head swells when he finds out how valuable he really is. Can Buzz and the other toys find him before he decides he doesn't want to return to Andy?
Toy Story will forever have a place in cinema history as the first completely computer animated movie. But Pixar did a great job making sure it's a movie people will enjoy seeing years from now. The toys are sympathetic characters and the story is wonderful. The site gags and animation make it a treat for adults as well.
Toy Story 2 works as well as it does because it builds on the base of the first movie to tell a second story. Pixar introduced new characters and a fresh story idea while still letting us see and enjoy to characters we loved from the first movie. And the animation has only gotten better over time. Yet the animation is there to tell a story, and the story telling and humor never lag.
The Ultimate Toy Box is a must for collectors or anyone interested in the animation process. Not only are the two movies showcased well on their respective discs, but the extras are phenomenal. I have spent hours going through the third disc soaking up information and trivia. The features commentaries on the first two discs are a fascinating look into what really goes into making these movies. I learned so much from them alone.
The two Toy Story movies will long be remember for being great films. Any film collector owes it to himself or herself to have both in their collection. And if you want to learn the most about these two movies, the people behind them, and what it took to make them, buy the Ultimate Toy Box. You will be entertained and educated for hours.
77 Outstanding
When I bought the Toy Story 2 DVD for my 2 year old son, I never thought I would actually like it, but now I think I like it more than he does, even though he asks to see it constantly. My favorite part is the Jesse story, with the Sarah McLachlan song in the background, I actually got misty eyed the first time I saw it. This is the best animated movie I have ever seen, period.
78 A Fitting Conclusion For the Two-Part Series
This second installment of the "Toy Story" saga is an improvement on the first one because the animation is better. The movements of the humans in the story are more fluid and natural and the story of friendship, loyalty, and deciding where one really belongs is one with which we can all identify.
We find little Andy Davis, his Mom, and little sister, Molly, comfortably settled into the house to which they moved in the original "Toy Story". Andy is a little older, and the physical appearance of the human characters has changed a little bit.
Happily, we see that Woody The Cowboy (voiced by Tom Hanks)still has a special place in Andy's heart despite his earlier displacement by the arrival of Buzz Lightyear. Andy still enjoys taking Woody to Cowboy Camp during the summer. But this time, the plans are altered by Woody's being slightly damaged.
At the same time, Andy's Mom decides to have a yard sale. When she takes Wheezy the Penguin down for the sale, Woody is stolen by a dishonest toy store owner as he attempts to save Wheezy.
As Andy's toys attempt to track down Woody's whereabouts before Andy returns from camp, Woody learns of his own history as the star of a 1950s children's show, and is greeted by an aggressive but friendly yodeling cowgirl named Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack a prospector doll who has never been out of his box, voiced by a dour Kelsey Grammar, and an awkward but adorably sweet horse named Bullseye.
The seach through the toy store is funny, especially when tour Guide Barbie points out, in reference to the Buzz Lightyear dolls, how "in 1995,shortsighted retailers did not order enough dolls to meet demand". Presumably, that incident is based on real life.
There is a poignancy to this story when we learn that Jessie once had a home, and that she hasn't been owned by a child in more than 30 years. The story of Jessie's brief time with her owner is beautifully enacted through music.
Complications ensue during Buzz's rescue attempt on behalf of Woody, and the objectives of the members of Woody's Roundup Gang
begin to differ.
Eventually, all turns out well, and this story provides a morality tale about dishonesty when, instead of ending of with rare dolls to send to a museum in Japan, Al ends up with no Round-Up gang members at all, and the child whose heart might have been broken by Al's greed and dishonesty ends up with two new friends to play with.
It's fun to watch the toy ensemble at the end enjoying a musical number by Wheezy. All in all, it's a cleverly written story with great animation. A masterpiece from the crew of Pixar!
79 Not Worth The Money, Buy The Two-Disc Set
Don't get me wrong, the movies are top-notch. The third disc has a lot of bonus features, however, none are very interesting. Buy the two-disc set instead and save yourself a lot of money!
80 Excellent and new
I think that Toy Story 2 is actually better than Toy Story 1. I found it more exciting because of the new characters and the new storyline. Also the setting was expanded. There is the Al's Toy Barn, run by the greedy Al who collects toys like Woody!
There is an awesome scene where the toys drive the cars! The toys are rendered beautifully. Obviously, tons of work is put into such a production. Kudos to Pixar.
81 Great combo.
The movies are very entertaining, as long as you enjoy this sort of film. I think this set was worth it for the outtakes on TS2 alone.
82 As Great As the First One!
Pixar knows what they're doing. They have created yet another unforgettable picture. Toy Story 2 - well, I want to say it's better than the first, but out of sentiment I can't. The script is hilarious to adults and children. You know, you'll laugh because you get the joke, then kids will laugh because you're laughing. It's a funny, touching and remarkable piece of work.

85 Outstanding animation
This is perhaps Disney's best film yet, even managing to top the original, which is certainly a rare feat. Basically it's a children's film for adults, who'll love the many movie references ('Jurassic Park' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' to name but two) and the jokes that go over the kids' heads. Thankfully though, the film also delivers to the kids though too, with plenty of visual jokes as well.
There's not one annoying character, each one drawn sympathetically and realistically to help the audience completely forget that they're only watching an animated film. The new characters are great too - especially Jessie (Joan Allen), Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer) and Mrs Potato Head. More importantly though, 'Toy Story 2' grips its audience with some stunning action pieces (with the camera moving as if Woody and co. were real) and real poignancy. I can think of countless children's films that have been spoiled by an overly schmaltzy ending, but this is genuinely heart-warming, with the story of children outgrowing their toys being startlingly close to children outgrowing their parents. Wisely picking Sarah McLachlan to sing the theme 'When She Loved Me', with her achingly sad vocals, works well.
Quite frankly, this is a movie that crosses all boundaries as well as all expectations. One to be watched.
86 A must-have!
If you do not have this in your collection order it now! It's two of the coolest animated movies I've ever seen. The second even has a Darth Vader parody that has a really funny end to it.
87 Daughters favorite
My 2 year old loves Woody and Buzz. We have a pretty good DVD collection, but she always picks this one. I am glad there are 2 so I don't have to watch the same one over and over again. Thanks Buzz!
88 Even adults will love this one...
As usual, the artists of Toy Story have done a great job in creating Toy Story 2! Kids and adults alike will surely enjoy this animation, not because it's a 'cartoon', because many of the toys will bring back memories and spark up the kid that sometimes gets lost in the adult world. It's quite a lively approach to reuniting the older generation, with something that was long forgotten, with the younger generation to what being a kid was all about. With toys like Woody, Mr. Potato Head, and Etch-a-sketch seen in this animated fashion it's a film nobody can miss!
With the integration of actor-voices like Tom Hanks and his humorous style it turns any frown back to a smile. This animation is the perfect gift for any child or adult and a great way to enjoy a film as a family.
89 A Really Great Movie
the toy story 2 dvd pack is a good deal . you get 2 great movies all in one pack. the movies are made for little kids but adults only understand some of the jokes. I think you should definately get this dvd pack!!!!
90 If you have kids you'll end up memorizing lines
When I first reviewed this I was thinking that I didn't like the second movie as much as the first. Perhaps I was wrong. My two daughters, ages 14 years and 18 months, both love this movie more than any other we own. I have watched it or heard it in the distance dozens of times.
A year ago my then 6 month old daughter didn't watch movies, now at a year and a half she is a huge fan of Buzz. She loves Buzz and askes to watch him almost everyday. She has a buzz toy, which is her favorite. Buzz, Buzz, Buzz.
I still like the first Toy Story movie a little bit more, but I think both movies deserve a 5 and that any family with young ones should have this set in their collection. They are both good clean fun and enjoyable to watch, even for the umpteenth time.
91 The Best Movie I've Ever Seen!
Okay, okay. I'm only 12 years old so I'm no Roger Ebert. But I have to admit this is my favorite movie!! I just seemed to love it when I saw it in theatrical release six years ago!! For years I waited for a sequel, and in 1999 I finally got my wish. You see, this movie is about friendship, life, and things like that. Amazing how a Cowboy doll, an "old" thing was replaced by a spacetoy. It just seems so clever to me! The characters had such distinct personalites, like Rex, Slinky, Mr. Potato Head. They all blended together to make a wonderful story. In fact, me and my Brother, Mat know this movie so well, we pratically know every line to it. I even made a small book trying to write down every single said thing!! I also have the movie, two posters a calendar, the video game and a book on it. Woody tries to get rid of Buzz but in the end, they become best friends! The plot had so much, getting captured by a sadistic kid(Sid), trying to catch a van, having little Army men, everything! The sequel was amazingly worthy, because... Oh, I've talked enough! Rent Toy Story tonight!
92 These movies are the benchmark for 3D animation
There's a reason why everyone rates these movies with 5 stars. They are worth watching over and over. I think all animation students, both 2D and 3D benefit from watching these movies. Aspiring filmmakers will also degree. They are movies for all ages and everyone can enjoy.
93 Toy Story 2 Disney-Pixar's worst film.
Good news for parents who had young kids get scared by Toy Story: Disney and Pixar has made another movie, and called it Toy Story 2. I enjoyed the first Toy Story movie, even thought I couldn't beleive that Tom Hanks was the voice of Woody in the first and is again in this film. And this time Woody is famous. He aways was, but he didn't know. That in the 50's he had his own tv show called Woody's Roundup, in which the characters are puppets on string. But it got canceled becuase of kids only wanted to play with space toys. As Toy Story 2 opens, that his owner Andy (John Morris) is taking him to a camp. But Woody's arm gets torn and is left back at home. And while Andy at camp, his mom (Laurie Metcalf) holds a yard sale. And takes a penguin that is Woody's friend and sales him in a box for 25 cents. Woody goes off to the yard sale and falls off of Andy's dog. And Big Al who needs Woody to ship off the Roundupp gang to Japan, steals Woody after his mom won't sell it to him. And Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), and Slinky Dog (Jim Varney in his last movie) goes off to save Buzz. And gets a warning from Mrs. Potato Head, "Don't Talk to any toy you don't know".
94 A very nice surprise! (I had to write this review)
Ok, here's my opinion: GREAT MOVIES!!! Any opinion about the quality of sound, visuals and content has already said, and I share it. What I want to add is that I bought it because I just simply loved the movies, so I had to have them! I didn't care about getting my copy in Region 1 format, because I speak English. But this is where the surprise came up: disc 1 (which I think it's the best story) is in three languages: English, French and Spanish! Then I like it more, because now my two under-6-year-old nephews can watch it with me and listening to it in our native language (they're learning English, and I think experiencing one of their favorites movies in both languages will help them improve their skills). This is also motivating to buy more titles, so I will. That's it. Enjoy the movies!
95 CONVERTED ME!
I DO NOT LIKE ANIMATION.AT ALL.
SO I WAS PLEASANTLY SUPRISED TO FIND THAT I REALLY ENJOYED THIS AND BOUGHT IT ON VIDEO.
IT REALLY ISNT JUST FOR KIDS,THE HUMOUR WILL DELIGHT EVERYONE AND ITS CHARM AND APPERANCE IS WELL WORTH A WATCH.
IF YOU ARE WONDERING WETHER OR NOT TO BUY IT THEN DO,BECAUSE IF I LIKE IT THEN EVERYONE WILL!
