You get it all with the ViewSonic N1700w. A superior 17" LCD computer display and an ultra-thin TV. Revolutionary NextVision technology brings images to life with stunning brightness and depth. You'll get vivid graphics, clear text and fabulous TV. The N1700w offers a wide-format desktop theater experience with HDTV capability, precision scaling and image processing and a powerful 20-watt audio system. The included TV tuner module offers additional ports to easily add a digital camera, DVD player or gaming console. With the N1700w LCD TV, your desk chair may be the best seat in the house.
ViewSonic's NextVision N1700w offers a 17-inch widescreen liquid-crystal display and enhanced viewing with native 1,280 x 768 resolution, more than 450 nits of brightness, and a high 450:1 contrast ratio for dynamic images from any source. Multimedia enhancements include 3:2 pulldown and a 3D digital comb filter that supports both enhanced definition television (EDTV) and HDTV resolution formats.

Unlike LCD televisions optimized only for standard TV viewing, the N1700w lets you view all forms of digital and analog content, including compatibility with HDTV receivers and set top boxes at resolutions of 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

In addition, the N1700w delivers full-screen viewing and picture-in-picture (PIP) capabilities for watching video or TV content while working simultaneously on PC applications. Multiview or POP lets you create up to 9 picture windows on the screen for viewing multiple TV channels at the same time. The TV also features advanced digital de-interlacing and image scaling, high-fidelity audio with a 20-watt integrated speaker system (10 watts x 2), a 181-channel tuner, and a slim-line remote control.

Precision scaling and image processing include a digital 3-D comb filter and 3:2 pulldown correction. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. The comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

The included TV tuner module offers additional ports to easily add a digital camera, DVD player or gaming console.

What's in the Box

1 Not bad but not as good as Samsung and Toshiba
I saw this TV in a local store. They have a few model displays. THe sound system is not that good. Picture is really nice. But I'd recommend the Samsung LTN1735 and Toshiba over this one. They just seem more stylish and better. Samsung has HDTV too. Not sure about the Toshiba 17 In or 20" LCD TVs. Spend $20-40 you can get a better one. But this one is not bad, really. Its picture quality is better than Sharp's, in my opinion.
2 great product at a good price
For some reason, it is listed separately as the model N1700W although they are the same monitor. After I ordered this, I found the 3/3 negative reviews on the N1700W listing on amazon, I was worried. However, this is an editor's choice at PC mag on 11/2003, it can't be that bad.

After the order at Amazon, I recieved it from J&R in just two days. Like some other reviewers say, the control buttons on the monitor is too sensitive, but I find the buttons on the remote quite easy to use. So I probably won't need to touch those buttons on the monitor again.

The picture quality is decent. At first, I find the color non-uniform, but it turns out that my video card is not set at the recommended refresh rate of 60 Hz. After that, the image is sharp and clear. As with most other LCDs, only the native resolution (1280x768) works best.

If you are like myself planning to use the DVI output, it doesn't come with the cable. Make sure you order one somewhere.

There is a rebate ending 5/1/04; but it only applies to certain retailers (J&R and others). Check carefully before you purchase. With the rebate, it is priced just a little more than some other 17" LCDs. But with wide-screen, and DVI output, and built-in speakers, and TV turner with PIP and composite video input, you don't find these everyday.

Quote of the Day:

Chapter 2: Newtonian Growth and Decay

The growth-decay formulas were developed in the trivial fashion by
Isaac Newton's famous brother Phigg. His idea was to provide an equation
that would describe a quantity that would dwindle and dwindle, but never
quite reach zero. Historically, he was merely trying to work out his
mortgage. Another versatile equation also emerged, one which would define
a function that would continue to grow, but never reach unity. This equation
can be applied to charging capacitors, over-damped springs, and the human
race in general.
