This is probably the most comfortable controller for the xbox on the market- if you're just starting to play the xbox. The original controller was way too freakishly huge, (says me, and every xbox review i've seen), but the S seems just right. The greatest testiment to this is the fact that they don't even sell the big ones anymore.

The only people i wouldn't recommend this controller to are people who are already used to the tank-of-a controller that the originals came with. The two controllers, while they look similar at first, have a completely different feel, and it won't be anything like you're used to. Just look at the other reviews. The only people who gave the S a bad review (1 star, 2 stars) are people who have gotten themselves used to the original.
2 Good Controller
There really isn't much to say about this controller other than it's just as reliable as the origional Xbox controller, except smaller. Now for me this just happens to make all the difference in the world. The normal sized Xbox controller was much too big. I don't happen to have the largest hands in the world and that controller was uncomfortable and difficult to use. The S controller fits much better and is less painful to use. Plus I can't blaim the controller anymore for sucking so bad at a game.
3 Why the heck am I writing a reveiw for a controller... IDIOT
okay first of all small controllers rock big ones are too big and smalls pause, back, black, and white buttons are in a better position , big ones however are both high on the top and way in the middle of the thing the s controller way the buttons are right next to your thumb in an easy to remember place I am saving for an xbox, xbox live , counter strike, fable, halo2 ,carrying case, and an extra controller right now i play my bros box I play counterstrike all the time when ever he lets me I was playing the game onces with this guy named suicide maniac (good guy played and talked for 3 hours on humans vs bots) after playing he offered to be my freind on the game my bro let me say yeah (say yeah like little john) he knows I was on my bros x box and he knows me as InFer0 1337 my bros name but when i get the xbox no way that will not be my name it will be Spullkrum (dont ask about the name there is other weirder names out there and this one isnt theres names like nekuska and crap like that) he wont recognize me at first but i will explane and he will beleive me by my strange atatude and to prove I am the the guy he knows I will talk about the stuff that went on between us for instance some guy named chumb kept kill killing us on cs (it was a bots vs humans game so he was on our team) we killed him on the beggining of each game before he got us me and suicide were freinds with another guy i thing hi name was the chuck and there was another guy cant remeber his name though eventually chumb ran away from us he ran into the groop of bots(who are programed to stick together in a big group) and he got slaughterd helplessly (the freak) any way small rocks BIGGYS SUCK!!!!!! (by the way i'm shorter than most my freinds by 4 inchs.) :) (I am NOT a girl this is my moms e mail address)
4 A very reliable Xbox controller
There are many gamers who tend to carp about the size of the Xbox controller. If their hands are too small then I tell them to go play PS2 or stop complaining. I think the old Xbox controllers were a bit big, but these new ones are just fine.

The controller itself is excellent and has many buttons that give you a lot of control. I really like how the triggers are positioned, and how there are two joysticks. The buttons feel like quality materials, and don't make noisy sounds when you press them. Once you get used to these controllers you will really like them and then you'll find PS controllers to be small. These controllers come with long cords that let you sit pretty far away (about 9 ft), so I would discourage purchasing a wireless controller that may not operate correctly and will take batteries. Why do you want to stray away from the TV anyway? You may not see the TV well enough when playing Halo. Plus wireless controllers drain your batteries. So stick with this classic controller and you will not be disappointed.
5 comfortable
This controller fits my hand perfectly. After I used this controller for an hour I was used to the controls.Once I played for four straight hour and never had a cramp.I just bought xbox 2 weeks ago and now when I help my brother with Gamecube It always takes 2 trys two hit the start button.By the way I'm 15 and my brothers 12.
6 Good controller...meh...
well, most of you have said this controller sucks...which I strongly disagree with. I have used this controller...eh...for about a month, and I find it to be just as good as the D. The controller is small (not that it matters...its not like I have small hands,Im 14) and the sensitivity is great. If anything this contorller is fun, and sensitive. You can tap the button lightly (in a racing game) and the car will drive slwly until you take it off, slam on it hard...car goes faster until you cant jam the button anymore...

I love this controller, acctually i prefer it over the D...
7 Original S didn't live thru Halo.................
My husband and I purchased an X Box package 3 years ago for our 3 teenage kids. It came with 1 S controller. We purchased a second S controller so that at least 2 of them could play. Then we bought Halo for Christmas last year. The original controller died shortly after my husband and I began playing Halo, but the second controller we purchased separately lived through every single level (& we beat them all before winter was over). We consequently had to purchase another controller, but couldn't seem to find another S controller in stock at the stores, so purchased whatever was available (Pelican's Eclipse) which has lasted longer than the original with no problems, although I usually refuse to use it because it feels so different from the S. I've often wondered if a slighlty inferior controller that maybe didn't quite pass inspection was used in the package deal to cut costs??? Anybody else out there notice a difference in package deal S controllers vs. seperately purchased ones? Especially with the joystick coming loose? Because of the failure with the packaged one, we hesitate to purchase another, especially since they are considerably higher priced than other knock-offs. Could be it was just a fluke. In general we've always found original manufacturer parts to be superior to others.
8 Bring back the original controllers
I must say I HATE the controller S. It is way too small and the button layout is confusing. It feels cheap and fragile as well. I played on one in a video store and I could barely play the game. I will never buy one of these controllers, I will keep my original controllers. If I ever need replacement XBOX controllers I will just go to Ebay and get the first ones that came out with the XBOX.
9 The Best XBOX Controller
This is simply the best XBox controller I've ever used. Period. Generic controllers look the same but have a completely different feel. Spend a couple extra bucks and get the real thing.
10 Great Controller. GREAT SIZE
This controller is the perfect all around controller. I am 17 years old 6'6" and I have pretty large hands. I love this controller especially for the new release of Halo 2. I have had my Xbox for just over a year and I could not wait to get new controllers after I got my Xbox because the Xbox came with "D" controllers. I felt like the "D" controllers (I got two for my birthday) were very uncomfortable and i envied my friends for having the "S" controllers, which have a much more convenient button layout and more comfortable mold. I am going to sell my two "D" controllers and purchase four new "S" controllers to replace them. The only thing that could make this controller better was if there was a headphone/headset jack on the controller so that it is compatible with the newer Xbox Live headsets, instead of having to buy a memory slot adapter.
When compared to the third party (accessories not made by Microsoft) controllers I would say that it is a no-brainer to buy this model and not a third party controller mainly because of quality. I have been an avid video-gamer for 13 years now and I have never bought a third party controller for any console that I have owned.
11 THE NEW XBOX CONTROLLER
IT'S JUST WHAT YOU NEED TO PLAY HALO 2 WITH
12 Great controller
This is a great controller. Great durability and it works fine, plus its smaller which is also an improvement, (and why i hated the other controller, god, it was so damn big.)

5/5
13 This hardware is GARBAGE
It seems that people have reviewed the controller S favorably, having to do with the size and comfort, etc. However, what no one mentions is that the controllers are VERY, VERY FRAGILE. I have had my Xbox for roughly six months. In that time, I have had to replace FOUR of these controllers. That is $100, yes, ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, worth of controllers. They are not durable in any non-paperweight sense of the word.

This is in the context of me also being a SNES guy. I have spend $20 in TEN YEARS for new controllers for my Super Nintendo and they work as well as they ever did.

I thus advocate not buying this controller, and opting for a generic one. At least if that bombs out, you are spending less money to replace it.
14 Much better than the original XBox controller
Those who bought an XBox when it first came out remember the monstrously oversized controller that came with it. Fans complained, and Microsoft created the Controller S ("S" for "small") to alleviate the cramped hands and aggravation the original controller caused. The control layout may take some getting used to, as many games require the use of all of the buttons, and reaching the small black and white buttons near the bottom of the controller can be risky in heavy combat (such as switching grenade types while battling an Elite in Halo). Otherwise, this controller is great. It's just the right size for most people, although if you're buying a controller for someone with small hands (like a child, for example) then I suggest the Mad Catz MicroCon, perfectly suited for smaller hands. The Controller S is also available in green and blue.

I hope this review was helpful

15 The Best the XBox Has to Offer, Still Not a Great Controller
My hands certainly aren't baby-sized, but the D controller is just too large (one industry reviewer has called the D the "hamburger" controller).

I own 2 S controllers, and they've been able to handle a lot of playing (10 hours per week for over a year) with no problems to my hands or to the controllers themselves. They still work perfectly, and the analog sticks are as sensitive as ever.

Compared to the 2 other consoles, the S controller is still very large, but it is a vast improvement over its predecessor
16 X Box S Controller S, Bad Button Layout
To begin with the controller is too small, and I have normal hands not freakishly big. The other thing is the white and black buttons were in a much better location on the old controller, Its hard to make my thumb bend that way quick enough. The back and start buttons were also better in the middle.
I Gave the new controller a chance for about 3 weaks and It just didn't fit. As soon as I switched back over to the old one my gaming improved drastically.
17 "not for people with baby hands"? Whatever.
Since this is the same as the blue S controller, I'll just copy/paste my review for that for the most part.

I'm not going to compare this to the other system controllers out there, as they're all good in their own right. But this Controller S is very comfortable. I got my Xbox a few months ago I just don't get what everyone's problem is with holding this. All the buttons are where they sould be. The 'start' and 'back' buttons are easily accessable, as are the white and black ones. Not to diss on the original controller, but I like this model better, as the Xbox logo doesn't take up so much space.

Unlike previous system controllers (ie- the N64), my hands weren't sore or cramped after playing. You shouldn't have any problem when using this model, or the original one. A nice addition is that the cord is seperated into two parts. The first part connects to the controller port in the Xbox console, which connects to the rest of the cord leading to the actual controller. This makes it so that if you trip over the cord at all, it'll seperate and not screw up the game at all (a menu will pop up, pausing the game, stating that the controller isn't plugged in properly). More companies need to start using this system, it'd save a lot of stress on gamers.

So get an extra one of these, or one if all you have is the first version of the Xbox controller. They're well-made and shouldn't fall apart or anything. Plus the rumble feature actually lasts a long time unlike the ps2 dual shocks.
18 The Best Controller For Xbox
This is by far the most comfortable and durable controller there is for the Xbox, and any system for that matter. I have owned an Xbox since it came out and have purchased many controllers and have found that the button placement on this controller is excellent. I have bought an Intec and Pelican controller, and this one far surpasses the quality and comfort of the other controllers. I have big hands, but this controller suits me( and anyone else i know that has played on it for that matter). Highly recommended.
19 Stupid S controllerS
S Controllers just suck. It's so small after I player for 2 years with the D Controllers. My hands are also really too big for the S Controllers. In other words, S Controllers are just not good enough.
20 Simply a step in the right direction
The original Xbox controller I found to be similar to the Nintendo GC controller - I hate 'em!

The type S controller offers much more logical button placement , is far more comfortable in your hands, and on top of that, it feels more "natural" when playing a game. What I mean is that you can make "instinct" moves a lot easier than with the D controller, on which I failed in many games because I couldn't find a button fast enough or the clunky thing just pissed me off.

But if you don't want to listen to me don't. I'm telling you though this controller is the best one on the market - other than maybe the PS2 controller.

21 I miss the original controllers
I have been playing the Xbox longer than probably anyone else who has written a review here. I started playing as an alpha tester about 5 months before they hit the retail shelves. The primary focus of the group I was in was the development and testing of the controllers.

We were given a handful of games (none of them completed yet) and several different controllers (the S and D controllers among them) and were instructed to play for a while. Just to keep it fair we had to use a different conroller everytime we started a different game and would rotate games and controllers every 45 minutes or so.

After we had used all of the controllers in all of the games, we all had measurements taken of our hands and then were asked to write a review of the controller we liked best any why.

The D and S controllers were ahed by a wide margin and the other designs were scrapped as far as I know. The D controller was liked buy about twice as many people as the S so it was decided that it would be packaged with the Xbox when it was finally released. The S controller was still prefered by many, so it was available as an option to buy separately. I like the S controller, but I love the D controller much more and will always choose it if I have a choice.

I can't understand why Microsoft would stop making the D controller as it is the preferred controller of almost everyone who I play with. There are several stores in my area that still carry the D controllers and the sales people tell me that they sell as good if not better than the S controllers. I think it is a huge mistake for Microsoft to only offer the S controller and take the choice away from everyone else. This is why I cannot recommend this product and would advise you to either seek out a store that still sells D controllers, or find a 3rd party brand that you like.

22 2nd best controller
This is the best wired controller for any system. I own three and only one has broken (because my friend repeatedly threw it against the ground, when i was beating in Soul Calibur II, hehe). They can take a large amount of abuse, and keep going. The buttons are in perfect spots and they are better placed than other controllers.
23 Comfortable as all get-out
I just got an Xbox for my fourteenth birthday and I'm glad I bought S controllers instead of "D" ones (the big, bulky ones). Not only did this controller fit my 10 year old brother's hands as well as my dad's and my hands, but I found the button layout to be ingeniously...layed...out...yeah. Anyways, Its definately the coolest, most comfortable controller out of Gamecube, PS2 and XBOX. Go with the "S" ;)
24 This is an awsome controller, why does every one complains
I got an xbox for christmas this year and it came with 2 controllers s's and a cyber 2 controller. The s version is much better that the cyber. I don't see why every one that doesn't own an xbox complai. I figure it's because they are jelous and are trying to stick up for there PS2. What i'm really trying to say is that don't hesitate to buy this, it's definatly the best controller for kids. (because it fits there hands.) The pheniox is good to but the butttons are kinda squishy and they scrape. Only get it if you have lake 4 year olds playing, there a little smaller. Another hint of buying is if your an aduldt or just have big hands, then the cyber 2 is probable the best choice. Theres 2 bad thins about it:
A-it's really big. (which can be good
B-the black and white buttons are a little less convienyent.
I hope this helped you shopping at least a little, this controller rocks!!!
25 very good
... this controller is very nice for the right person, people with smaller hands, people with bigger hands might want to consider the original controller, it has a very nice, tight feel to it,and in my opinion, is the most comftorable controller out of the 3 big systems, If you want to buy this, shop around, ... peace
26 What Crap
This controler is too small. And it hard to hit the right button. The y is too far from the control stick.
